Just installed Kubuntu on my netbook.
KDE Connect 💕
I can be lazy now and control my netbook from my phone 😊
Also notification sync, file sharing etc!21
6 monitors are success-fucking-fully running on my setup.
Fun detail is that WITH the official AMD driver, one screen wasn't turning on and one had a weird resolution but WITHOUT it, it works completely fine!
Yes, it runs completely fine on Linux (Kubuntu).
Finally have my dream setup.42
Downloaded Kubuntu because i couldn't seen to be able to boot from a freshly created KDE Neon bootable usb.
Installed it onto my netbook (Lenovo Thinkpad X121E) and it worked great!
But just the fact that somehow the installer froze when trying to setup hdd encryption kept bugging me.
Took a random flash drive which was laying around and put it in to see what would happen. KDE Neon booted just like this and everything worked very well with hdd encryption.
I now have a very secure netbook 😊15
I met my old school friends today. One of them was apparently showing off his programming skills too much(let's call him X). So much that he(friend X) was comparing Linus Torvalds with himself. And he was telling us that Linux is best because there are so many DEs and customisations and blah blah.
So one of my other friend Y(who's not into computers much) asked him to install Ubuntu on his laptop while we were sitting in cafe.(Y wants to play with command line mainly this semester according to him) So he started complaining that he does not have ISO with him and trying to avoid it.
I said I have kubuntu iso he can flash it right away. Then he(X) said "Kubuntu is too complex for him(Y)".(me in mind : " yeah, just because its a. DE, it becomes complex") So I searched in my phone (faked the search, basically renamed kubuntu iso to Ubuntu iso lol) and gave him " Ubuntu " iso
And this "pro developer" installed that on his laptop and after installation was completed he said that "OMG DUUUDE UNITY IS DEAD, EVEN UBUNTU SWITCHED TO KDE AS DEFAULT DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT, ITS COOL".
Question: I'd like to choose a new distro for my surface.
Although I do shitloads of terminal stuff, I'm an eye candy lover. Debian based please :)
I can deal with problems myself if they occur.
Anyone any ideas? (KDE neon/kubuntu/nitrux/mint have already been tried)19
I feel so great after switching from Windows 10 to (GNU/(REEE))Linux Kubuntu.
No annoying and redundant programs that are not quitable anymore.
It is like having a rooted phone. I am the god and not Microshit.
I am free. It feels so relaxing.
Sure, while setting this new system up, I broke a lot of things (even with years of preknowledge on linux servers), but I finally managed to finish it.20
I run kubuntu on my work laptop with various security settings in place. All of my other colleagues run Windows 10.
My manager recently noticed I wasn't running Windows and told me I was a threat to the security of the companies network...
When every ubuntu based distro fails, from kubuntu to xubuntu, lubunto, mint etc.
You will always have Linux Lite. How the fuck this thing manages to keep 2 vs code editors opened as well as firefox and chrome at the sime time while at 3.55g mem(according to htop) without fucking up?
Good engineering, das how. Kudos to my ninjas at the Linux Lite team. This is why I recommend this distro to anyone wanting to go Linux. Good for the beginner and the working professional alike(I use it for work)4
Is asking for a nice email client in Linux too much?
In thunderbird, I found no way to customize the "messages pane". Title, sender, time all in one line.
In KMail, the fonts and style of HTML signature is not working as expected.
In Evolution, the fonts scaling doesn't work correctly.
So my laptop is a Lenovo y50-70 and it's quite good. The keyboard is amazing compared to most other Laptops I've tried the screen is nice, it's durable and it's got some decent specs. With it (and also my desktop) I dual boot Kubuntu and Windows 10.
About three years ago I decided I wanted to reinstall both OS' since they were starting to get cluggered. Lo and behold I wasn't able to do that because, and I quote: "EFI USB Device boot failed".
Hours were spent trying to Google different things to the point where I was even desperate enough to go beyond page 0 on the different searches with (as you might have guessed), no luck. "Fuck that" I thought. It worked and I could clean it manually anyway.
Fast forward to the last part of August this year where I upgraded my Kubuntu from 17.10 to 18.04 and shit got weird. You can read more about it here:
but the TL;DR is in the link. Windows was also quite annoing as well (but don't take my word for it).
As you might understand it made me really frustrated. I couldn't update my BIOS since they were already at the current version, but one way or another I had to fix it. After a while was almost about to give up when I decided to give this:
a go. It was weird though. Like imagine the conversation:
"Can't boot from USB bro, what do I do?"
"Just update your kernel, bro"
Well IT. FUCKING. WORKED.
So I imideatly installed Linux and have just now bothered installing Windows (since all of the teachers are vacation so I had plenty of time to set it all up).
But got damn.4
switched from windows 10 to kubuntu 18.10 (yes it's not arch or gentoo) last week, after the previous system crashed and burned
I had no idea, my laptop can be so fast and work almost entirely without a fan. Live is beautiful again!2
Im trying to find a Linux home!
Been using Ubuntu for about a year now for schoolwork and before i was on arch Linux.
Just wanted to hear from devrant what distro is your favorit?33
Took me awhile, and 3 reinstalls but I finally got my second hard drive on Linux, Kubuntu with most of the things I use to code here and zsh on powerlevel9k. Yey!8
I don’t know what this rant will look like, but hold tight because I’m pissed as fuck.
Why? Well, let’s start with the protagonist, which is me.
ARE YOU A NEW KIND OF IDIOT? 2 DAYS FOR A CABLE.
Let me explain this, I’ve picked up an old HP ProDesk 600G from work, works pretty well, installed 16Gb RAM, 3x 1TB Disks, let’s use it for some lab environment.
Wipe Windows, repartition this mess, install Kubuntu, went all ok, let’s reboot.
Login screen: fine, desktop: nothing. Two folders, command bar works. I try to open Konsole, nothing shows up. I try to go on tty2, nothing, tty3 something shows up.
Ok, maybe I’ve messed up something, let’s update, upgrade , fix missing and blablabla.
Fuck me, nothing works. Let’s go check the logs. Nothing.
What the fuck? Well it’s late let’s go to sleep. Next day I start over, reinstall Kubuntu, same problem.
Debug : nothing.
Then. THEN. I see this fucking cable. The fucking VGA. I was in DVI, what the fuck? Then I realised that I plugged in all sort of cables and plugged DVI AND VGA and DVI was set as second output. I was on FUCKING SECOND SCREEN THE WHOLE TIME. After unplugging naturally everything was normal again.
Fuck you self idiot. Fuck you.
Anyway, I’m also pissed of about my roommate. DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ANYTHING WITHOUT ASKING. Holy fucking shit, if you need to touch something, put your hand into your dirty pants and shake your immaculate dick.
I set up a fucking smart house not to fucking break everything. If a cable is there, leave it there. If I put an access point on a closet, leave it fucking there. Do you think I just want to wavebath to get a fucking tan? NO, I HAVE NI FUCKING COVERING IN MY ROOM.
If there’s a bulb in my lamp DO NOT FUCKING SWIPE IT. I spent 15 Minutes understanding why I couldn’t turn it on with my fucking phone.
FUCK YOU, and your mother that so badly designed your inorganic piece of cells that we call brain3
I need a new OS.
I have one year of Kubuntu, one year of Fedora KDE and there years of Arch Linux (Openbox, KDE, i3wm).
Now I'm undecided between debian and Arch Linux as a stable System.
What do you guys recommend me?
I hate picking huge software from AUR and need to compile it, but i hate having always a, yes stable package, but under versioned...
(and, exist a Debian minimal without everything Archstyle?)15
I'm setting up my working laptop. Just made a fresh install of Kubuntu, but apart from VS Code, Discord, Franz and NodeJS I don't see what I should install. Do you have any advice ?9
Since everyone is showing off their setups here is mine:
OS: Windows (for gaming only), Kubuntu (Main Distro), Linux Mint (Sidechick Distro :D)
HDD: I have 3 with about 3.5 Terabyte alltogether
8 GB of RAM
AMD FX 6300 processor
ASUS R7 370 4GB STRIX graphics card
Yeah its an alright PC :D The next one I build will be a beast though. For sure.
Oh and I have a HP Laptop with 8GB of RAM and some Intel CPU. Its alright for coding when I am not at home.11
Decided it was high time to give windows the boot, other than the very rare gaming I do there seemed to no longer be a valid reason to keep it. So off I went, kubuntu looked nice, but after 2 hours I determined it did not like me much. No matter how much I google, could not find out why it would not pick up sda in the installers drive selection.
So figured, last try, grab the Ubuntu ISO and booted with that, and what do you know, 5 min later I am installing my software....1
My cycle : windows - ubuntu - mint - fedora - elementary - kubuntu - apricity os - debian - windows.
Why? Because that damn linux has fucking problem with hybrid intel/amd gpus13
I've every been a Arch Linux fag. It's my main OS from 5 years. With a small parenthesis of two months of FreeBSD recently, I've used before Arch Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Fedora KDE, OpenSolaris (randomly), CentOs, plus a lot of others distro for tests.
But I've never tested Debian!
So I've installed it on my small server.
Oh... My... God.... It's fantastic. PACMAN >>> apt, but damn it's really stable and out of the box even if minimal. A very surprise. I think it can be my favorite remote Linux for a long time....
But a question rises. Why with a father like Debian... Ubuntu after the 11.04 is such a shame? The last I've tested is the 12.04 I think, but I've hated it, and I hate it even now. (Crash, driver not found, apt problem, very heavy repos and my internet sucks, UNITY, etc...)
Ubuntu, what happened to you ...? With Kubuntu 8 you were such a good guy...4
So been working with Linux for almost 10 years now, so am not new with this. But yesterday, a friend had difficulties accessing Wikipedia and their sister sites so I tried to help him out, you know, the usual way. Ping, Direct IP, DNS, and proxies/VPN, checking his /etc/hosts, but to no avail. Decided to download TeamViewer and install it so that I can help him out remotely. Went afk for 30min for dinner and when I came back, TeamViewer installation .Deb installer literally uninstalled every single software from my Kubuntu machine, from Spotify and slowly even my file manager and terminal was uninstalled. When it was over, even my grub was uninstalled.
Had anyone faced the same issue before?8
One thing that I'm not that big a fan of in Kubuntu is how I can't just scale one of my screens. I need to scale my 4k monitor to 1.5 the size otherwise it will all be too small. However my 1080p monitor also gets scaled, which is really doesn't since it makes everything wayy too big.
However, when I use display scaling my apps actually fucking scale. Meanwhile on fucking Windows they haven't figured that out yet

Someone wanted to take a look to kde on Ubuntu 18.04 in my laptop, so did:
`sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop`
After rebooting and all did:
`sudo tasksell remove kubuntu-desktop`
and now I don't have GUI. The problem is that I can't also have network, neither by WiFi or ethernet. So I can't install packages.
The best way to fix that is to reinstall Ubuntu? Or there is a way to recover the ability to connect to network?
BTW, yes: "someone" was myself.
Shame on me 😔5
So I decided to try out Kubuntu 18.10, aaaaand it doesn't work too well for me. Oh well, back to 18.04 :v
Recently I experienced a feeling of being fed up with the screenshot tools on Linux.
There's a build in one in Kubuntu called "Spectacle" which isn't really that much of a spectacle as it pushes my displays to the left until there's nothing left on my second screen and half of my first screen is missing.
There's Shutter, which has always been slow for me. Plus there's the fact that the cursor in "capture rectangle" mode is hard to see for me :v
There's Kazam which doesn't seem to allow me to select a save path from the terminal.
There are others of course, but I wasn't really going to bother and instead decided to ask myself "how hard would it be to make my own?"
Turns out not hard at all :v
I now have a screenshot tool which is fast, small, takes region captures and takes window captures.
I guess next step (if I can be bothered) is to set up slop+ffmpeg to do screen recordings
Used Ubuntu for like more than a year now, liked its Unity DE. Now they have gnome, which is "meh" for me. So I moved to Kubuntu. (Also trying out Manjaro)
Omg KDE plasma is so awesome o.o it's a whole new world, I am amazed. And everything is working just fine! And it is beautiful.
Dear Kubuntu 20.04
You're not a programming language but I felt that you fit here in this wkRant so people can see how shitty you became.
It's about 6:27am CET, and you wasted my night, you used to be as simple as sudo apt-get install, now you're mostly PPA first or worse, make. You killed make now we use cmake. We are now looking for debs, which is a pain since you end up in an index site without download here. And the debs now don't work. Missing dependencies. You killed core libraries saying they are now incompatible or obsolete.
All I want is my god damn cli visualiser and osdlyrics back!!9
Just installed arch on my laptop...
I've always been a Debian guy before so blimey that install was painful but I'm glad I've done it.
I then installed sddm, for some reason it seems to be an old version maybe? I was expecting the look of sddm you get in kubuntu, any ideas?3
Because of you great people, I installed Linux (Kubuntu, latest) again on a device after roughly 4 years, just to see how things are... 3 application crashes, 2 errors with no details just before I was able to install Chromium 😂 oh boy, hope the updates that crashed Discover fixed some of it 😌8
I normally have my Windows desktop and my Kubuntu laptop, but I’m on “holiday”, and I only brought my laptop. “I can write a simple research proposal on it, right?”, I thought. Ahahahaha, no. Turns out Libre Office and Mendeley are fucking useless on Linux. I had to give up and use my mum’s prehistoric Windows 7 laptop... Also Snap is “great” in theory (basically a Linux setup.exe, rendering packages pointless), but nothing I’ve tried worked so far. Docker can’t figure its permissions out, Chromium cursors break, and Mendeley doesn’t even detect Libre Office as installed. What a fucking shit show. I love Linux for dev, but no fucking surprise that no sane human being uses it for everyday tasks.16
Aaayoo issya boi the OG rapper straight outta Compton, wassup?!
Nah, for real, though.: How are y'all doing? It has been a long time. I hope y'all are having a great time (can sense some peoples' incoming negative comments due to corona).
I built my completely new first gaming rig like a few weeks ago after my school laptop stopped showing any signals.
The specifications are the following.:
- Mobo: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (no iGPU)
- dGPU: KFA2 RTX 2070 SUPER OC
- 2nd dGPU: GTX 550 TI (this one gets a new rant/post)
- RAM: 2x G.SKILL Ripjaws V 8 GB 3600 MHz
- PSU: Be quiet 650 W (It was the platinum edition afaik. I originally bought the 600 Watt Gold edition, but somehow they sent me the 650 Watt for no additional charge... which is great for me haha)
- HDD: 2x 4TB NAS HDD in RAID1 configuration (to load all of my games around 2 TB right now. Got the two HDDs for 110 Euro including the SATA Data cables)
- SSD: One Intenso 240 GB SSD and a reused Samsung 256 GB SSD from my old broken Lenovo laptop
- Case: Be quiet Pure Base 500 black with a glass panel on the side
While building my first PC, it was one hell of a challenge. I knew how it all was working in theory, but to put it all together, practically, was a bit of a challenge, but it was a nice challenge. I learned a lot and have a performance gain I could only ever dream of.
I used to play my games first on a Toshiba satellite l750d laptop (around 40 fps in cs:go with the lowest gfx settings) and then on a Lenovo e51-80 laptop (around 30 fps max minecraft with no shaders and texture packs).
Now I play cs:go on Kubuntu with 400 fps at peak with ultra high graphics. It is unbelievable.
I couldn't trust the system when I turned on the fps display the first time I saw it.9
Fuck fuck fuck
Linux mint disconuting kde version
18.3 will be last version with official mind kde 😭
I always prefer mint kde rather than kubuntu
In my own experience I always found mint kde more stable than kubuntu
And I loved mint update software
Probably go with the now kde neon or back to elementary !
I used elementary for 2 years or so I installed kde mint last year and that's what I like the most now 😒
Not a gnome fan
Will try arch again 😄
Manjaro kde is good too so.4
Looks like my kubuntu dual boot with windows 10 is fucked up. Timezone resets to some other place every time i switch OS.4
Quad Booting my laptop with Manjaro-KDE . Let's see how this one turns out.
This is my third Linux distro after Ubuntu and Fedora.
Been using Ubuntu from past 2 years.
Hoping to move on to Arch in next 6 months if I like Manjaro
Currently I have 1 Windows, 1 Ubuntu, 1 Kubuntu and now a Manjaro2
Currently running Kubuntu and want to switch to Antegros.
Downloaded Antegros Live ISO from Antegros website.
Format USB to FAT32.
Used UNetBootin to make Antegros bootable USB.
Restarted/boot from USB.
Computer checks drives.
Beeps, says no bootable options found, shutdown button pops up.
Shutdown and turn back on.
Really fucking frustrating. Please help.5
What I like about newish laptops is that the USB-C display port easily allows three screens. One of my work setups look like this. Complete with my therapy stone that I took from an Irish beach. It is very pleasant to the touch thanks to being moulded since eternity by the Atlantic ocean. Sunshine makes it pleasantly warm. The external screens are old 1680x1050 Dells. The are perfect for my old mans eyes. And my aging Das Keyboard is holding up well. If it's keys would have had imprinted letters they would have worn off by now.12
i'll make an important choice so i have to choose a distro between those too:
Can anyone suggest me a Linux Distro or an Ubuntu Desktop Environment that:
- Has beautiful interface
- Is not slow
- Allows customization
I don't like Unity and Gnome because of the shit interface. I installed KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) but it's slow af and buggy.
I want something that has fast window management, Mac-like Dock, and just something that increases productivity.12
Just ordered a bunch of stickers for my laptop! (yay!)
I would love to see some of the devranters beautiful sticker creations!
🐧Link your pictures! 🐧
(not a pic of what i bought)7
Linux users of dR, what are the packages/softwares you would highly recommend to a Linux kiddie (Beside latte-dock, Timeshift)? For a Kubuntu ofc?16
Part 2 of my distro hunt
So Manjaro it is (99% sure about it). Now, I'm coming from Kubuntu, which has been pretty nice since pretty much all production environments I deal with run Ubuntu. Now, switching to Arch and also Pacman, that most likely means that I wont be able to run all development environments locally on "bare metal" like I'm used to. I guess I could run everything in Docker, but that seems like a bit of a hassle. What's your ideas/solution?15
Anyone had issues with NetworkManger on Kubuntu restarting 66 fucking times on boot? Switching to wicd ffs...2
Went to download Kubuntu over Ubuntu since I'm not a fan of Unity. Error message during install, crashed computer, have to reinstall Ubuntu using backup USB -.-4
Am I the only one who still faces standby -> wake-up issues on a laptop with kubuntu 18?
(Like GUI breaking\freezing)1
Is Manjaro good for web and mobile developer? Currently I'm using Kubuntu, but I'm thinking about switching to Manjaro with i3. I'm using Andoroid Studion, Intellij, VS Code, GoLang and Java. I might replace VS Code with Vim later down the line.3
Kubuntu, why can't you empty your bloody swap. Swapiness is already at zero. Still my swap starts filling with easy 4 GB of 16 still free of my actual ram. Wonder if that's a docker thing...1
After several Firefox/Mozilla failures (getting rid of proper addons, supporting censorship) Waterfox looks like a promising alternative. On Windows it runs great, sadly on Kubuntu LTS it does not - binary package only works with quite new std c++ library :-(. Damn it, why can't they distribute all their libraries together like Tor browser does (it's also Firefox based)?2
So I think I've pretty much finished configuring my new Razer Blade 15. Dual booting Windows, and decided to go with Kubuntu. Managed to switch from the Nvidia GPU to the integrated intel one and get those damn fans to shut up. Now it's just the struggle of getting the Synaptics drivers working properly. Nice.2
I need to reinstall Linux due to reasons. When I set this PC up i went for Kubuntu, but I've been having a lot of trouble with my Nvidia graphics card.
Is there a distro that you'd recommend that works nicely with an Nvidia GPU? I'm open to all alternatives.13
Want to change distro and wanted your advice. I'm moving away from Kubuntu mostly due to tons of issues on power management (hibernation either not actually hibernating and depletes battery or not waking up afterwards)
I'm thinking of Pop OS or MXLinux, mostly for checking out something new. Do you have any experience of these?
You know a good place to get stickers for my laptop?
Stickers like ubuntu, kubuntu, PHP, CSS, python and so on4
