Archlinux, i3, termite, vim, vimium.
Once after 2 hours working I realised I left the mouse in the other room.2 -
Today I missed a date with newly met girl just because I was struggling with archlinux installation on my new notebook. I just forgot about it.2

I love Linux, but its community can be so full of incompetent assholes..
Just now I asked in Freenode ##linux how to get the process ID of my current running process in bash. I got my answer - it's a shell built-in called "$$".
Then people start to nitpick some more - why do you need it? How is that different from an exit? - to which my response was.. well I know the whole idea behind exit codes, and I'd use it whenever possible, in all defined behavior that allows my program to terminate itself whenever it can. This pidfile however would be used to exit itself and provide diagnostic information whenever the program enters undefined behavior - a segfault in C language. Scenarios in which I don't have full control over the script's behavior anymore, such as the system entering an unworkable state where the system stalled, still got some binaries in RAM but the rootfs got unwritable, such as now - very helpfully, thanks HP! - when my laptop likely overheated and shat itself. I issued sudo reboot into it, but even that wouldn't issue properly anymore due to the /sbin/poweroff binary becoming inaccessible too. I had to issue a hard power cycle.. one of the few times in which I'm thankful to HP for actually causing shit like this, lol.
Point is, that undefined behavior is what I'm trying to mitigate against. I certainly can't let any files other than diagnostics remain in nonvolatile storage like that, especially when their state should be predictable in order to ensure good operation (like files expressing whether the script is already running or not, i.e. lock files).
Back to that IRC chat. Aside from the answer, I got ridicule from people who probably don't even know how to properly compile a kernel. Ubuntu users, overconfident scum. Sometimes I feel like I should ask questions in channels like #archlinux only, where such incompetency is ridiculed on its own.13 -
Dear windows 10
I won't mind a weekly 30 minutes update but...
My ubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My lubuntu connects to wifi in 2 seconds
My archlinux connects in 1 second(don't ask why)
My raspbian starts up and connects in 10 seconds
WHY WOULD YOU TAKE MORE THAN A SYSTEMS BOOTING PROCESS TO GET CONNECTED?12 -
I installed ArchLinux on my smartphone thanks to termux, and now i kinda feel like a god, but don't know what to do.
I'm bored.9 -
Friend: " How many layers of madlad are you on?"
Me: "uhm... I made a Proot of ubuntu for a ubuntu machine once"
Friend: Watch me

The overreach by a single company near or close to near monopoly on the internet is beyond bone chilling.
To be precise, I am talking about Google extending its reach by forcing people to use AMP in the webpages.
I get insta furious when i see my favorite webpages using them and effectively my entire browsing activity on that page is happily recorded for clicks and ads.
To just bypass that i have to unnecessarily add more and more addons to lock them out of my browsing which in turn WEAKENS my entire browser.
And sincerely saying, this sort of outreach is becoming really annoying. Because plain JS and Cookie Blocking will not work. and slowly people are running out of options.
If posts about AMP are being made earlier, I apologize.8 -
I've been fucking around with arch since 9pm and now it's 2am...I have class tomorrow...why did I do this to myself? oh that's right because it looks beautiful.5

My brother had been using my PC for watching movies and play games and I wanted to work, so I installed archlinux without any DE or WM, now if he tries to use it he might learn thing or too or leave my PC alone!!!!4

Got a second 1080p monitor for Xmas ans it gave me an excuse to clean my desk off ;)
I included the obligatory 'screenfetch' window as well, haha.
Now to see if I can hack together something resembling a KVM switch from parts I have, to use the Mac mini on one of them (when it's needed on rare occasion, lol).
P.s. I'm sure many of you have more bad ass setups, I even used to have quads myself... But I'm not posting this to start some pissing contest! It's just mine and I'm proud of it :P
Happy new year everyone!!!!6 -
!rant
I need a new OS.
I have one year of Kubuntu, one year of Fedora KDE and there years of Arch Linux (Openbox, KDE, i3wm).
Now I'm undecided between debian and Arch Linux as a stable System.
What do you guys recommend me?
I hate picking huge software from AUR and need to compile it, but i hate having always a, yes stable package, but under versioned...
(and, exist a Debian minimal without everything Archstyle?)13 -
Could we all just agree that Mac is a piece of shit in terms of performance? Specially with those lousy animations and that stupid dock?
Got Archlinux running on my Macbook. Happy days again.3 -
I'm not getting why you guys complain about being judged for "hacking" while using the terminal.
In my case I'd occasionally like to open a terminal in my lubuntu (or archlinux in my previous times where the laptop was running smooth and i had to learn everything about how an OS works and spending most of the time searching about errors to find more desperate people and no answers but the community's hopefully growing and it's the best distro if you're an experienced linux user but not in my case so i had to use lubuntu for now until mastering it) to trigger those around me and try to prove them wrong afterwards.
I'll hit the airport for fun when i have time.3 -
I was messing with my lemonbar + i3status config (with sway), when I decided to ditch i3status entirely and generate a status line using pure Awk. Battery is calculated from /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0, got workspaces (Material Design Icons) working, have a nice dated, and all colors match Solarized Dark from Vim. Have underlines, highlights etc. setup.
It's so beautiful :)4 -
Dual-booted Gaming Computer: A Saga of Frustration, Alcoholism*, and Relief
So a while back my gaming computer was booting Antergos Linux and Windows 10. It took me a few months, but I finally became fed up with Windows 10's bullshit of putting ads in the OS (Suggested Apps, OneDrive, etc.) and reinstating all of their defaults after an upgrade (Edge, privacy settings, the People Button in 1709).
So, I backed up my data and installed Windows 7. Windows 7 has a bright, consistent look, and in my opinion still holds up as a good operating system.
However, I couldn't boot into Antergos after that. For whatever reason, no matter how hard I tried, I just wasn't able to. So, I decided to reinstall. Might as well, anyway.
Now, I have an nVidia card, which does not play well with the OSS drivers, so it's basically normal for me to have to unplug my card and use the on-board graphics. So I do that and boot into the LiveUSB, do the install, boot into the desktop, install the nVidia drivers package, shut down.
I reinstall the card, turn the computer on... and nothing. Just a black screen with a flashing underline. I can't even get into a TTY session.
I ended up trying a few other distributions--Gecko Linux, Arch Labs, Manjaro--but all had the same issue. I was about to give up, but decided to try Antergos one more time, but with the newest install media.
And it worked! I was so freaking happy! I can finally play my Linux games again!undefined dualboot why do i do this to myself linux arch wiki couldn't help me archlinux now to do it again with my 1060 windows1 -
To do list:
- Become a better dev
- Install Archlinux and Plasma
- Finish teaching my brother C#, F#, SQL
- Learn Xamarin better
- Actually use my programming skills to create useful tools for myself (and maybe my friends and family)
- Finally add one of my personal projects to GitHub -
What the fuck is this piece of shit called Ubuntu? I was writing an automation tool on my local PC (ArchLinux) in c++ 17 (c++1z or whatever). Finished it today. Working and compiling so everything is fine. Went to my server, git clone, make.
Okay some errors because I havent installed my networking libs yet. So I installed them.
Make.
Error because I was using a c++ feature only available in c++ 17. But wtf. I told g++ I wanted to compile with c++ 17 support. I mean... On arch it compiled fine. On centOS it at least told me that it doesn't know c++1z (it was some really old centOS). BUT JUST TELLING ME ITS BECAUSE I SUCK AT PROGRAMMING?? THAT IS SO NOT OKAY. MY CODE IS LEGIT ISO C++ 17. FUCK UBUNTU. Installing Arch on my server now because I can't handle this shit anymore...16 -
Spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to update ArchLinux (I wanted to update a certain package). Something to do with slow/failed mirrors timing out. Updated the mirrors in a not ideal way (https://gist.github.com/vodik/...). Then got package conflicts, of course. Then something about package cache. Then used `reflector` to update the mirrors. Then got another problem with the PGP keys. And finally, the update completed and now I can open vlc to watch the office...5

Am I the only one who turns off the PC by executing "die" in the command line?
(I use Archlinux with i3wm, so there is not a graphic button to turn off the PC, and writing shutdown -h 0 was too long)6 -
Why the fuck does windows use 100MB for the efi partition? Like oh hey I will exactly allocate enough space for me. Oh you want ArchLinux and NixOs too? Well fuck you have fun dangouresly moving around partition just to increase the fucking size of the efi partition I just allocated at install-time without ever asking you about it.6

Archlinux
Sway
Alacritty
Neovim
Firefox
And there are Tons of open source projects underneath all of that, that you are not 100% aware of. (Wayland, gtk, qt, zsh, bash, sh, systemd, etc...) -
Tried to install ArchLinux on VMWare 5 times, and f#cked up
Tried once to install it on real PC - did it...
Realized, that using VMWare is not for me)3 -
Facebook keeps popping up with news about merging Instagram into Facebook to create F.B.I
I'm like WHAT THE F***!
Ahh, I realize people arent going to give a shit about this either.
They can slowly bake it in a *slow boiling a frog style* and eventually it will be merged.
Delete Facebook.
Delete Instagram.
Delete Whatsapp.

Just went to update my nextcloud instance, is there an archive of packages for archlinux ARM, nextcloud stable isnt compatible with php 7.2.
I regularly clear /var/cache/pacman/pkg yes i already checked... -
Today's frustration: there is no linux tool which can sync to disk a specific file. Now you have syncit: https://github.com/agherzan/syncit . I will package it in archlinux (AUR). But really, how can such a small functionality not be available?1

I am back to DevRant after about 2.5 years.
scrolling to some posts for a feew days now. I am wondering - is no one using arch anymore?
I am! So you know for sure now!10 -
So, yesterday I downloaded Manjaro KDE Linux, and I don't why, but when I scroll down something, the page goes up and scroll up, it goes down, it's so frustrating, idk what's happening thier ಠ︵ಠ4

Hy to all,
I managed to install Archlinux after 3 days of continues documentation but I still have some problems that I need to solve.
1. Any idea how to run gnome-terminal?
I've set the locale if you guys are wondering and installed vt3.
2. Couldn't install visual studio code.
3. How do I install themes. I have gnome gui.
I've read the arch documentation but still can't figure out how to solve some of the problems. If you guys have a website with a good guide or any tips that would be great.
Thx in advance.1 -
Heroku.
I don't like setting up servers and things. I know how to (I spent 1.5 years using archlinux and I know a lot on what's going under the hood). I like the functional paradigm where the same input yields the same result. I don't like having side effects although I know they can be necessary.
I would have to create a script to handle the configuration process instead of spending hours redoing it.
That's what I love about Heroku even if it's pricey. Almost no configuration at all. Attach some addons, configure a few env variables and everything else is in the code. -
OpenCV,OpenFace,Caffe are supported in Arch Linux, but CUDA is not supported!! :| WTF!! How these packages could be supported in Arch but CUDA not!7
-
Clearly I don't know enough linux yet to make the switch to archlinux. I'm having trouble installing it....6

Finally I've bought my new laptop...
I've called the CDC to help me in the first Win's boot! I didn't want to risk taking some strange disease! 🤣🤣🤣
Now Win has gone and Archlinux reigns! -
Not sure if it counts but spent the day setting up a pxe boot server for a laptop I have since usb 2 is fucking slow than setting up this file server implementation thing for Git Pages so I could just downloaded an updated mirrorlist without need to add it manually. Just to find out I need to figure out why I have no internet argh!

!rant Hi, I have a question. I want to change my CPU, from a socket AM1 to AM3 to make my PC faster, it is the first time I upgrade it. I want to know if it is necessary to reinstall the OS. I have search in the Internet and it says you need to reinstall if it is windows because of the drivers. My OS is ArchLinux and I didn't need to install any driver when I first install it, do I really need to reinstall?4
