WHY THE FUCKIDY FUCK DO PEOPLE THINK THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE A DEVELOPER THEN YOU CAN DO EVERY FUCKING THING IN A SNAP?!
THIS ENTIRE SUMMER I WORKED FOR THIS MIDGET OF A FUCK AND THE IDEA WAS TO MAINLY DEVELOP AN IOS APP FOR THEIR PRODUCT. THAT ONE APP TRANSLATED TO THREE SEPARATE APPS AND KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM THE ONLY DEVELOPER THEY HAVE SO I HAVE TO DEVELOP IT, TEST IT AND DOCUMENT IT!! AND WHAT'S EVEN WORSE IS HE KEEPS GIVING ME DESIGNS AT THE LAST MINUTE SO I ALWAYS END UP HAVING TO CREATE NEW PROJECTS ALL THE TIME. WHEN A WEEK PASSES BY WITHOUT ANY UPDATE HE AND HIS FUCKED UP BRAIN CELLS GATHER A MEETING WITH HIS 'DONALD TRUMP HANDS-SIZED' BALLS TO ASK ME, 'WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG? THESE ARE JUST THREE BUTTONS ON THIS VIEW?' MOTHERFUCKING COCKSUCKER!! GO GET YOUR MOM TO DO THIS WORK THEN IF IT'S JUST THREE BUTTONS. TO HIM EVERYTHING IN IOS WHICH INCORPORATES A TAP IS A FUCKING BUTTON! BUTTON THIS! BUTTON THAT! AND IT'S NOT LIKE HE HAS SIMPLE DESIGNS..NO.NO.NO.NO. THIS ASSHOLE-SHAPED-HEAD MUGGET DESIGNS SHIT WHICH REQUIRES ME TO HAVE TO DRAW A UIVIEW AS THE SHAPE OF A HUMAN BODY AND HEART. THEN ASIDE FROM THAT, JUST BECAUSE MY RESUME SAYS I MINORED IN MATH AND APPLIED MATH, HE SENDS ME A PAPER THAT EXPLAINS MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS OF DATA ANALYSIS THEN WANTS TO MEET WITH ME TO DISCUSS THE SUGGESTED METHODS THEN IMPLEMENT THEM. AT THIS POINT I HAD ALREADY IMPLEMENTED AN ALGO FOR COUNTING THE NUMBER OF STEPS THAT WAS WAY WAY WAY MORE ACCURATE THAN THE SHIT THEY HAD IN THEIR CONTROLLER..
SO AS I AM ABOUT TO FINISH IMPLEMENTING JUST THE INITIAL 5 VIEWS OF THIS 'FINAL' APP, HE SERIOUSLY WALKS IN AND TELLS ME, SO I'M STARTING TO WORRY THAT WE'LL NOT MEET THE AUGUST DEADLINE SO I'M THINKING MAYBE YOU SHOULD START SWITCHING BETWEEN DEVELOPMENT. WORK ON IOS FOR 4 HOURS THEN SWITCH TO ANDROID FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TIME. OH AND UHH IF YOU FEEL LIKE TAKING THE IMAC WITH YOU TO WORK FROM HOME, THAT'S FINE AS WELL AND I'LL BE AVAILABLE IN THE WEEKENDS AS WELL. IT WAS AT THIS MOMENT THAT I REALLY REALLY HOPED I WERE GAY! LIKE 'NO LUBE' STYLE KINDA GAY!! OH BTW AT SOME POINT HE HAD ME PROGRAM ONE OF THEIR CONTROLLERS, AND WAS ASKING IF I COULD START RESEARCHING MEANS OF WRITING AN SDK FOR THEM.
KEEP IN MIND THAT I'M AN INTERN WITH ONE YEAR IOS DEV EXPERIENCE.. THEN HE WANTS ME TO ENTIRELY START LEARNING ANDROID AND GIVE HIM TWO VERSIONS OF THIS THIRD APP IN TWO WEEKS.
HE CAN GO SUCK HIS OWN DICK WHILE GETTING FINGER FUCKED BY A FORK WITH A BLUE WHALE'S 6FT LONG DICK UP HIS MOUTH.
*** that felt good ****36
Me: Wanna see this website I built this weekend?
Friend: Yeah, sure.
Me: I connected a bunch of APIs so you can snap a photo of yourself and get a recommended song based on your facial expression. Pretty cool, right?
Friend: *thinking* ... I think you should change the size of that button, and the colors are pretty bad, dude.
Every time I show my non-tech friends anything I get this kind of feedback :/19
Meant to put this up weeks ago but kept forgetting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Here's a photo of me and my now fiance, thought we should snap a photo before I get to tipsy!20

If your IDE found

would you correct them
or let them slip.
His palms are sweaty
Knees weak, arms are heavy
The tests are failing already
But at his laptop he looks calm and ready
To squash bugs
But he keeps on forgetting
What he wrote down, the whole team goes so loud
He opens his file, but the code won't come out
He's chokin', how, everybody's jokin' now
The deadline run out, times up, over, blaow!
Snap back to reality, oh there goes file integrity
Oh, there goes documentation, he choked
He's so mad, but he won't give up that easy? No
He won't have it, he knows his whole header's code
It don't matter, he's dope, he knows that, but he's broke
He's so stacked that he knows, when he goes back to his mobile home, that's when its
Back to the office again yo, this whole rhapsody
He better go capture this moment and hope it don't pass him

--- GitHub 24-hour outage post mortem ---
As many of you will remember; Github fell over earlier this month and cracked its head on the counter top on the way down. For more or less a full 24 hours the repo-wrangling behemoth had inconsistent data being presented to users, slow response times and failing requests during common user actions such as reporting issues and questioning your career choice in code reviews.
It's been revealed in a post-mortem of the incident (link at the end of the article) that DB replication was the root cause of the chaos after a failing 100G network link was being replaced during routine maintenance. I don't pretend to be a rockstar-ninja-wizard DBA but after speaking with colleagues who went a shade whiter when the term "replication" was used - It's hard to predict where a design decision will bite back and leave you untanging the web of lies and misinformation reported by the databases for weeks if not months after everything's gone a tad sideways.
When the link was yanked out of the east coast DC undergoing maintenance - Github's "Orchestrator" software did exactly what it was meant to do; It hit the "ohshi" button and failed over to another DC that wasn't reporting any issues. The hitch in the master plan was that when connectivity came back up at the east coast DC, Orchestrator was unable to (un)fail-over back to the east coast DC due to each cluster containing data the other didn't have.
At this point it's reasonable to assume that pants were turning funny colours - Monitoring systems across the board started squealing, firing off messages to engineers demanding they rouse from the land of nod and snap back to reality, that was a bit more "on-fire" than usual. A quick call to Orchestrator's API returned a result set that only contained database servers from the west coast - none of the east coast servers had responded.
Come 11pm UTC (about 10 minutes after the initial pant re-colouring) engineers realised they were well and truly backed into a corner, the site was flipped into "Yellow" status and internal mechanisms for deployments were locked out. 5 minutes later an Incident Co-ordinator was dragged from their lair by the status change and almost immediately flipped the site into "Red" status, a move i can only hope was accompanied by all the lights going red and klaxons sounding.
Even more engineers were roused from their slumber to help with the recovery effort, By this point hair was turning grey in real time - The fail-over DB cluster had been processing user data for nearly 40 minutes, every second that passed made the inevitable untangling process exponentially more difficult. Not long after this Github made the call to pause webhooks and Github Pages builds in an attempt to prevent further data loss, causing disruption to those of us using Github as a way of kicking off our deployment processes (myself included, I had to SSH in and run a git pull myself like some kind of savage).
Glossing over several more "And then things were still broken" sections of the post mortem; Clever engineers with their heads screwed on the right way successfully executed what i can only imagine was a large, complex and risky plan to untangle the mess and restore functionality. Github was picked up off the kitchen floor and promptly placed in a comfy chair with a sweet tea to recover. The enormous backlog of webhooks and Pages builds was caught up with and everything was more or less back to normal.
It goes to show that even the best laid plan rarely survives first contact with the enemy, In this case a failing 100G network link somewhere inside an east coast data center.

Rebuttal to all these beautiful wiring closet shots. This was taken at my first internship in 2002. As green as I was, I still knew this was awful.
(Pardon the low fidelity; it's a snap of a 14 year old printout!)4

When you finally snap at your PM for setting every deadline to "As soon as possible":
SAY. ASAP..ONE. MORE. TIME.4
Sooo, in my 5 years of high school, I had 5 different IT teachers...
Now, in Italy Highschool goes from 14 to 19 years old, I started programming some days after becoming 13, and "programming" classes begin on the third year, so I had quite a headstart on my classmates...
Now, for the third year, I had an awesome teacher, he noticed I was ahead and... Bored, so he gave me some extra stuff to study, he's the only teacher I've learnt anything from, it was awesome, very stingy with grades, but getting a perfect score with him was so satisfying.
Fourth year, the new guy was old, very old, at least 70, his lessons were just him talking about how programming was when he was young.
But then... During the second half of the fourth year I changed class due to bullying under a teacher's advice, and HE happened...
My new IT teacher, one of the most ignorant, awful people I ever met...
He's literally the reason I only went back to that school once, because another teacher needed help with a course...
One day I made the HUGE mistake to say that his "while(i <10000000000000);" wasn't very efficient for making a delay, because it didn't free the CPU, and since then:
- I never got more than 7 out of 10 at his tests
- He insulted me in front of the whole class
- He sabotaged the oral part of my final exam, shouting that he hated D'Annunzio when he saw he was in the literature part of my thesis (needed him to connect to WW2, and the Memex, that then allowed me to start talking about PCs and programming, my thesis was about the influence of lisp on modern programming languages), loudly chatting with other teachers when I was trying to keep calm (a teacher who knows me quite well, and was there to see my "performance" thought I was going to snap at some point), distracting the english teacher when I was exposing the english part of my thesis and pressuring the commission to give me 99 instead of 100 out of 100
So yeah, he almost made me hate the only thing I'm good at, undervaluing my work and my skills, undervaluing and humiliating me as a person, and I think that if I meet him again I might spit on his face...
So yeah, my biggest "programmer enemy" was a person that then did everything in his power to make my last year and a half of highschool hell
Now I can gladly say that with the help of my tutoring, some of my university colleagues are starting to appreciate programming, and my engineer friends ask for my help when they need advices about their code, and it's giving me motivation to keep doing it and becoming a better programmer to keep up with their expectations4
So lately I’ve been sending an http request with ajax instead of using classic form submit. Pdf and images need to be converted into byte64 string then send it to the backend, problem is if the size gets too big chrome crashes and showed me ‘Aw snap’, but it works on firefox. Thr file is size could be 3 to 100 mb (for pdf). So my question; is this my problem or just browser limitation?20
I hate it when stupid ideas go public and get a huge valuation. Snap at ~$24b just means more of my mother asking why I haven't made something like that yet and everyone else pitching me their dumb ideas at my birthday party.3
Client: hey ***, happy birthday can you help me fixing....
Me thinking: hell no, i deal with yall fuckers 364 days a fucking year and yall can't leave me the hell alone for one cocksucking day. I need this one damn day a year not dealing with yall assholes where i don't snap and drive 300 fucking miles to not drive a nail in a broomstick and drive it up your fucking asdls6
FUCK! It's so FUCKING HOT. GODDAMN FUCKING SHIT. EVERYTHING IS SO MUCH MORE FUCKING ANNOYING IN THE HEAT. COUPLE THAT WITH THE FACT THAT I SUCK ASS AT EVERYTHING I TRY TO DO AND I SNAP AT THE SLIGHTEST THING. I NEED THAT FUCKING DEVRANT STRESS BALL, BEFORE I THROW MY SHITTY BOOK ACROSS THE ROOM, FOLLOWED BY MY CONTROLLER, MY LAPTOP, AND MY DESK SOON AFTER.
[ATTENTION if you're an apple fan this rant could hurt your religion]
- I used a mc for about 12 hours, only to fix the ios version of an app in Xamarin, it was a nightmare:
- I took the only free mac available, it's the latest macbook pro with the "amazing" touch bar, mac os wash freshly reinstalled
- I switch it on, set it up and after few minutes the screen become black, I thought went in standby (the "amazing" touch bar still was working), I try to switch it on but nothing, I asked for help to mac users in office and they choose a genius solution: forced switch off and on
- Finally after took all the adapters I can start to work
- I notice that's not possible to snap 2 or more windows (without 3rd party apps)
- It's not possible to automatically enlarge the Window almost full screen without cover the bottom and top bar, there is only full screen option but it's not the best
- Inverted scroll by default, on mouse doesn't make sense (on trackpad and touch screen yes)
- Multimonitor sucks...and it doesn't recognize 2 monitors connected in chain
- It's not possible disable standby if you're on battery and you close the lid
- Too often I had to see that annoying rainbow progress also for stupid actions
- Like Windows it's not possible to install 2 software at same time
- Like Windows after some updates is required to reboot
- Finally I switched back to my lovely Dell XPS 15 with Windows 10, but I had to go back on the mac for one more fix, so I search again for the adaptor, I reconnect everything and mouse and keyboard doesn't work, after few minutes the mac reboot by himself and appear a crash report dialog...of course I send them a nice feedback
- At the end of the day, as the mac asked more than once, I install the updates... after about an hour, when we try to switch it on again, it doesn't... so once again forced switch off and on
if you want to use it for nice picture on Facebook or Instagram "just woks" ... but for serious work I'm so grateful to choose a Dell XPS 15 with Windows 1010
Not to get political, but apparently the political climate in the world leads to the following situation.
"I'm being a fucking evil lying asshole. But I'm actually a good guy, because I'm doing it as pseudo-scientific research to show how easy it is to be evil and dishonest"
("Researchers" with an anti-FOSS motive attempting software supply chain attacks on Linux kernel)
What's next? "Scientists" killing puppies to show that, if someone was inclined to be that evil, puppies are weak and their necks snap easily?16

THATS IT, I AM PISSED OFF NOW ABOUT THIS SNAPCHAT SHIT!!!
I DON'T GIVE A FUCK !!!
I DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK WHEN SNAP CHAT WAS INVENTED
I DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK WHEN WATSAPP COPIED ITS FEATURE(yeah I haven't seen your pathetic story)
AND I ALSO DONT GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT THE SHIT ITS GOTTEN INTO NOW.
as a guy who is allergic to people I stay the fuck away from such apps.
but for God's sake get real u shit heads... Uninstalling an app is not an achievement worth bragging about( there is a drag and drop interface for it in ur Android phone)
Here is a guy who started his own company when he graduated from college and is providing employment to 100s of ppl and ur going to put that at risk just because your fragile ego was hurt because of "poor country " comment fuck u do your research that comment was made in 2015 when a monthly 1gb 3g internet would burn a hole in your pocket
Go screw yourselves u brain dead pieces of shit if u r so worked up about being called a poor country then start a company and provide jobs for the people who are struggling(why would you when uninstalling an app is so much easier).
Any one with 300 mg of common sense would have realize that the video would have difficulty in buffering in your slow ass 2g internet pack in your phone in 2015 when Jio sim was not yet introduced.
People like you are the reason I wish the super villains would win at the end of sifi movies.
I hope God(if there is one and if ever he decides to give a fuck) would give the guys who built this app the strength to get through this shit storm
//End of mid night rant11
I was actually successful in one that I literally got from the American version of The Office.
I conditioned one of my employees to want chewing gum after I did a clap motion with my hands: snap the fingers on both hands really quick and do a fist to palm tap and say "hey bud, want gum?" and because I specifically bought his favorite he would always say yes.
Eventually, and after months of doing it, I was walking around the office when I did the motion, but this time without gum. Now, he was on the fifth levek of the virtual world doing his shit fully concentrated and he STILL looked up at me looking anxious. I said "what's up?" and he just said nothing, that he felt that he was missing something but couldn't put the finger on it.
Just like in the show, he then complained that his mouth felt funny. Eventually he waddled his way to my office to ask for gum 🤣🤣🤣🤣
tl;dr I successfully Pavlov'ed one of my employees to have a need of chewing gum every time I do a finger snap clap motion.
I am the best manager in the world.8
When your web design professor expects you to make your whole final HTML and CSS website project with NOTEPAD... 😖😵11
Boss: You have one month to finish the program.
Me: It will be complicated but lets see how it goes.
To be cleared the end date is 2 of July.
Boss on the last friday: You have to finish on the 20th of June
Me: Yeah sure....
Boss yesterday: You have to finish on the 15th of June.
Me: You said one month.
Boss today: you have to finish by the end of this week
Me: No problem Boss you will have it tomorrow!!!
Boss: You have to. There are more projects waiting...
This is what I have to deal with. But hey... don't forget... tomorrow is a new day so ... fuck it.5
I am tired of toxic politics at work.
Signs of a toxic workplace:
* (good) decisions are discouraged rather than encouraged.
Someone wants to introduce a great optimization and guess what the reply is (often from someone IT-ignorant): wait a minute, you can't do that because we have all these nifty little hacks and if you dare to suggest change to our shitty system, we could not allow that! We want to stay in our comfy zone, no no!
* no one can make a decision unless Mr. favorite-developer-everyone-likes says it's a good idea. And even if he's wrong, no one cares to listen to anyone else's idea on it. Stupid Feudalism. One man decides over the entire codebase. That's just idiocy. Where's TEAM in there?
* thinking years of experience equals intellectual capacity. It certainly does not! There are senior developers with 15 years of experience who don't even know how to open commandline, or they didn't even know about Chrome developer tools, or how the HTTP spec is built. That shit just makes me cry inside. How can you give these peoples the title of senior when they know less than a freshman year kid?!
* ignoring people's education and/or capacities. "You just graduated, so you're a noob". Right, I know more than you, you idiot. You've demonstrated your ignorance often enough. Stupid ignorant colleagues.
* blaming politics (every team blames the other team and there's constant tension)
* roaming ignorance (no one in the company, and I mean no one, besides me, knows enough about Information Technology to make competent decisions or analysis)
What gives testers the idea that they know more than other members of the team? Why do they treat devs like they are mentally challenged?
What gives PO's that same idea?
What gives managers the idea that they can just yell at developers and threaten them with time pressure? Yeah, because the customers are breathing down their neck.
Just because I am a Junior Developer, that makes me stupid? I am tired of no one caring to listen to my ideas. I could save the company at the snap of a finger but everyone ignores my opinion (and often facts) on things.
People come in and instead of asking me for help, they ask everyone else for help, including the people who don't know shit about IT; now that's insulting.
Anyway, toxic politics.3
I had just started as an SDE intern, and was fiddling around with the code base.
Me: Hey, can you send me the link to our version control system?
Mentor: Umm, what!?
Me: You know, where we keep our code backup...
Mentor: Hmm, is there a need for that?
Me: Yeah, I mean, my past experience tells me to always backup code, just in case something goes wrong.
Mentor: Ohh, that's easy. I'll teach you how I do it.
So, he comes to my workplace, and does this:
1. Go to your workspace folder.
2. Right click it.
3. Zip it.
4. Open outlook.
5. Compose email.
6. Attach the zip file.
7. Mail to yourself.
8. That's how it's done!
I was like what the hell!?!?! Is this really happening?? And then he started basking in his glory, as if he had taught me some secret hack! Seeing this, I couldn't even get myself to introduce him to git. That was the worst part.8
I've decided to tattoo "RTFM" across the knuckles on my right hand. One day I'm gonna snap and instead saying it, I'm gonna punch someone in the face and they should know why.4
Hey fam, first post in devrant!
Possible client comes up to me and asks me what my mockup for his app looks like. I show it to him on running on my Android device.
Him: where are all the images and descriptions/info?
Me: you didn't give me any. I just made what it could look like if we had images and descriptions.
Him: well talk to some people in the departments and put it in.
Me: but that's not my job. You wanted me to make what it could look like if we actually went through with this project.
Him: okay. How hard would it be to make it for Apple?
Noooooooooo... I'm out.8
Boy do I love when Snapchat sends me a snap telling me happy father's day.
I don't even know who my father is but thanks for the reminder assholes.
I wonder what dipshit thought that sending everyone on Snapchat messages during all sorts of holidays that not everyone celebrates was a good idea.9
People who meet me in person seem to think I have my shit together because I managed to get out of poverty and build a decent life for myself but in reality, I am stuck in my severe incompetence.
I've been carrying around the "software engineer" title for more than half a decade, became a "senior" eventually, a title that I doubt I even deserve. I feel dumb most of the time. I spent more than half of my time in the field working in support. If I would disregard the years I spent working with IBM solutions (since most of the time, you don't build shit from scratch there), I would say I only officially started working as a "from scratch developer" last February 2019.
February 2019 - Python / AI
August 2020 - Go / Web Development
If you look at that, I probably have less experience than some junior developers. I have no specialty and have too many interests in and out of the field. I have no focus. Every time someone gives me a shit ton of review points during code reviews, I feel like this isn't the right field for me but I snap out of it anyway and think it would improve my skills as a developer.
There are plenty of things I know I should learn but refuse to do so because it makes no sense and for that reason, I know I will be phased out of this field soon. Just want to get that out of my chest because I hate it when people look up to me and see me as some kind of success story. Sure, I had my accomplishments but if you are looking for a role model, you might as well look at someone else.11
Aww Yeh. Got them stickers. Thanks @dfox, @trogus. And to you guys for getting my post to 20++. XPS 15 looking slick.
This is a follow-up of my last rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1323422/...
TLDR; My step-son tripped over my HDD power cord, sending it plummeting towards certain death.
So this is just over a year ago. At this point, my GF and I are married, and she's about 7 months pregnant with our daughter. Her son, Nicolas - the one from the last rant - is 13 years old.
So it was a Saturday, and I had Nicolas helping me to clean up the apartment. My wife was off the hook, because, ya know - she's pregnant.
While I was cleaning the living room, I had Nic cleaning the kitchen/dining room area. At this same time, I had my laptop and a 3Tb external USB hard drive on the dining room table, copying a bunch of data or something. This external HDD also had it's own power cord, which was plugged in next to the table.
Next thing I know, I hear an "Ohp!" followed by a crash. It was the horrifying sound of my hard drive plunging 36 inches off the table towards certain death. And death, it had.
Before even checking, I knew this HDD was dead. It took a lot for me not to snap at the kid. I told him to get out of the kitchen and go clean his room. That hard drive... hadn't been backed up. At all, which is on me. Even more so, since that data was really irreplaceable.
Even knowing that the HDD HAD to be dead, I still plugged it in, hoping for a miracle. I got nothing, it wouldn't even spin up.
$ dmesg -w
Showed that linux saw the USB controller and even the HDD controller (it printed out the manufacturer, SeaGate). The data was valuable enough that I was saving up some money to have the data recovered, which would be about $2,000.
However, before I had saved up enough money... My apartment was broken into and all my external HDD's (and some internal ones I had laying around) were stolen.6
> im an operating system
> when I feel like operating
> lifes good
> i reboot when i feel like it
> i take the entire screen whenever i want
> when im changed from landscape to portrait i still snap windows horizontally
> sometimes, when i know the laptop lid is closed and a keyboard is attached i still ask for your finger
> thats what you get for having the finger print scanner under the lid i say
The latest version of Chrome and Brave on OSX are throwing Aw, Snap! messages on pages like Gmail when left alone for several minutes.
Okay, I'm feeling a bit better now.
How to stop being a lil bitch? Why does it seem like everyone got the "don't give a shit" patch except me? I'm working hard on getting my shit together, I've made MASSIVE progress, but everytime I'm feeling good and confident and ready to take the world head-on, I just kinda crumble again with the slightest mishap. This needs to stop. I'm really trying SO hard not to snap. Fucking hell, being aware of all this makes it even worse! It's like I'm two people, one is a downer and REALLY good in draining my brain power, the other is the guy who's typing this and knows that life shouldn't be taken this seriously, but doesn't stay in the cockpit for too long. I'm extremely tired and mad. I just fucking hate this.9
I got my stickers nearly a week ago, didn't have the time to stick them and snap a picture of it, but now I've done it :)
Thank you so much @dfox for these, they're awesome ;)2
Oh, a big "Learn More" button on the hero of your webpage. Let me click that. Oh, it slightly scrolls down to the bottom. I didn't expect that. Thanks for saving me some mousewheel flings. I appreciate it. Really.
I want to get in the habit of proper documentation of my code, But i'm not sure how it's formatted, how it should look or how I should even begin writing documentation? Do I open a document and just take snap shots of my code and explain how it works? I'm a little confused. Do I take pictures of my UI and explain how to use it? Is it like writing a book?5
I SWEAR TO GOD IF I SEE ONE MORE BUGGY AS HELL SHITTY SNAP PACKAGE I GONNA LOSE MY SHIT AND KILL SOMEONE12
I think I might change my middle name to "I told you so"
Couple of weeks ago I proposed integrating a daily process job into an existing WPF application (details of what+why would be too long to explain) and the manager suggested I make the changes
Me: "I can do it, but Jay has the most experience with that application. I don't have his WPF skills"
Mgr: "How hard can WPF be? If it uses the MVVM pattern, it should be a snap."
Me: "Its nearly an 8 year old WPF project with several chefs in that kitchen. I pretty sure I could figure it out, but that is a difference between 2 weeks and 2 days. Integration is pretty straight forward, Jay could probably do it in a day."
DevA: "WPF is easy. MVVM makes it even easier. I worked on the shipping app."
Me: "That's was a brand new, single page app, but yea, it should be easy."
DevB: "WPF has been around a long time and the tools have really matured. I don't understand what is so difficult."
Me: "I didn't say anything would be difficult, I know with that application, there is going to be complexity we need to figure out."
DevB: "It uses the MVVM, so all we need is the user control, a view model, controller, and its done."
DevA: "Sounds easy to me."
Mgr: "If you need more time to work on the vendor project, I'll have DevB work on the integration."
Me: "How is the integration going?"
DevB: "This app is a mess. I have no idea how they got the control collections to work. If I hard-code everything, I can get it to work. This dynamic stuff is so confusing. Then there is the styling. Its uses dark mode, but no matter what I do, my controls show up in light mode."
Me: "The app uses Prism, so the control configuration is in, or around, the startup code."
DevB: "That makes sense. Will it fix the styling too?"
Me: "I have no idea. When I looked at it, some controls loaded the styles from the main resource, other's have it hard-coded. Different chefs in the kitchen, I guess. How far have you got?"
DevB: "I've created invoice button. That is as far as I got"
Me: "I'm finished with the vendor project and I'll be wrapping up the documentation today. I can try to help next week."
DevB: "Thanks. I think we might have to get Jay to help if we can't figure this out."
Me: "Good idea"
Two weeks and only a button. A button? I miss Delphi.3
So I walk up to my desk, join the zoom meeting for daily stand ups, and then join the other meeting scheduled by the CEO. And I watched a presentation built around how I'll be fired in the next few minutes. My colleagues and I got laid off in the snap of a finger.
When you snap at the other Developer because you SWEAR your bug fix push corrected the issue, to then be put back in your place...realizing the other Developer was right...humble yourself4
I'll just start off with how I really feel. Fuck big corporations with their career robots and retarded practices!
Now for a story. So I work remotely for most of the time nowadays, since my company has as clients big corporations. Used to be embedded with said clients, but it became kind of painful to work with them all so I asked to be reassigned to a remote position.
Now for the retarded part: The fucking Klingons I'm working with have two tiers to their VPN, but won't let me have the full version because it would be too fucking expensive. I checked and it's fucking 50 bucks per year difference.
So for that the Klingons are making me code through a remote connection that has a "best effort" priority.
Anyway after 3 weeks of writing code at a 400-600ms latency I finally snap.
I try to use a proxy and it. I write one myself, gets balcklisted in 2 days.
After about another week of writing code through a fuck straw I start working on node socket with 2 clients and a server that encrypts the send data, and syncs 2 folders between my workstation and the remote one.
It's been a month now and it is still working. It's not perfect, but I can at least write code without lag.
Question for you peeps: What shenanigans have you pulled to bypass shit like this?3
The lead kept sabotaging me instead of helping. When we disagreed, he told me to "take it to management" which I just found childish. So I did. I resigned. Enjoy your shitty codebase.
I wanted to find something new for a while now anyway, this is not a snap decision.7
Waking up and guess the first item on my feed?
IBM research just released Snap ML framework that's supposedly 47x faster than Tensorflow. Now, i like advancements but fuck i just finished developing my Tensorflow model, and i don't want to rewrite this stuff again!2
So in 3D printing community prusa is just the best printer there is for the money. I cant argue with that.
But they are making their own filament. Prusament.
And all my friends with 3D printers are using it and saying how amazing it is and all.
So i bought 3kg of it just it was cheap at the moment. I bought only 1 type which was mistake from my side but oh well. (Galaxy black if you are wondering).
Started printing it. Nothing sticks to bed. Huh weird. Cleaned it. Nothing. Huh. Releveled. Nothing. Well shite this is not good.
By some fucking magic all the prints started sticking after second print. Nothing changed BTW.
It looks amazing when printed i must give it that. But i printed upgrade for my printer and there is a little stress on the part as can be expected. I thighten it and it literally snaps in half on me in the layers. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
So i did a test. Printed 100% full cylinder. I could snap it in hands and the layer adhesion is basically shit for a PLA.
I tried printing higher temp (I used 215 normally) and still the same issue.
IDK if its just this specific filament type or all the colors are like that (I will buy different type as it still produces amazing prints that look amazing) and i will see if its any better but i had to use creality filament to get parts that actually dont snap in half on me.
I take the train well out side of rush hour when the trains are about half empty (though most seats taken). I have to come in because it's not like I can afford to have a workspace comparable to the cockpit of the millennium falcon both at home and at work.
I don't believe going into a panic about coronavirus but take obvious basic precautions to at least reduce the chance and slow the spread and that should do a good amount to reduce overloading the system. I kid you not, at this point medical facilities are considering buying diving equipment for enriched O2 supplies to keep up.
Today, as usual, some fucking piece of shit cunt twat psycho beggar that literally needs to be in an asylum with a massive fucking great gob of snot dangling out his nose is going up the entire train, every carriage, begging groping every hand rail along the way and potentially exposing several hundred people every hour.
I told this sorry sack of shit, surprisingly politely, that he'll end up rapidly spreading coronavirus if he keeps going all the way up and down the carriage like that. After he's fucking muttering on trying to make people feel bad about fucking ignoring him not being all caring and shit and then doesn't give a shit about giving everyone coronavirus after fucking waltzing down the entire fucking length of the train his pockets stuffed with coin. Then he threatens to assault me. I was fucking this > < far away from unleashing a life changing beat down and kicking his ass off the train with no pain or injury spared.
At the same time, that piece of scum waste of skin the mayor has apparently informed the public that you can't get coronavirus on the train or buses. How the fuck did he come to that conclusion? Is this really happening? How can something that clinically fucking thick as shit be our lord and master?
I fucking thought the great toilet paper rush was brain dead. Jesus fucking Christ and people voted for this fucking championship moron. Why don't they just all save themselves the fucking hassle and all march themselves off a fucking cliff?
These dumb shits without two neurons to rub together only need to put a dozen or so plain clothed police offices on the trains to catch these fuckers.
Why am I even fucking paying taxes? Where's it all fucking going? Another fucking lets give a billion quid to Fujitsu fucking failed IT project again I bet. Can't people bloody do anything these days? Does there have to be an app for fucking everything?
Someone should make a fucking facial recognition app so I can snap a shot of these fuckers and then if one of these fucking passes the phone camera anyone else with the app it'll set of there's a fucking imbecile in the vicinity alert.
These people need to be dragged out into the street, lined up against the wall and shot. No remorse. Toss them in a pit, cover it with dirt and be done with it. Why even bother with the execution? Throw them down the hole and fill it with dirt.
You don't have to go mental like it's the plague but people could at least show some fucking common sense, common decency and basic decorum. Even minimal measures, is that much to ask? Absolute scum of the Earth. How we even allow them to walk to Earth I do not fucking know.2
@dfox and @trogus I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of the stickers I got back in October. They have been enduring near daily use from taking my laptop in and out of my backpack to dealing with my sweaty palms on the keyboard deck. No discoloration at all.
Appreciate you guys and this platform you are cultivating! Thanks again.11
Been using Linux for years now and only now just discovered appimage's... Fuck me where have you been all my life?!
It's like snap and flatpak but not slow and shit!1
4 yrs ago, had a bitch colleague who came to me with a problem she encounter with her code, so I looked at it then asked her "...it worked yesterday-what happened? "
- and she snap at me "...then my fault ?! We figure it out together..."
I went home after that. Reason is :-
1. I didn't touch your code
2. If you wanted me to check my codes and see if it was my fault - then please say so.
3. If you are trying to make your problem my problem, don't snap at me bitch.2
I don't mind Apple marketing themselves as these revolutionary thinkers and innovators, because I figured most people see behind the marketing but appreciate Apple for what it is. It's a big company that makes well built products, that are efficient and give good support to those products.
But I'm sick to death of tech journalists talking about how every new feature is the death of Android. They have to be kidding themselves if they think what Apple's doing is innovating. Samsung's been designing screens for the bezelless market for a LONG time, and their technology in that is incredibly advanced (it's why if you use their iPhone x you'll be looking at a screen from Samsung!)
They finally adopted wireless charging and pretended it was brand new, but I remember when they came out with the Apple watch, marketing it like they'd broken ground when Android Wear watches had been out for a year!
I don't want people to think I hate Apple, I own a few of their products. I think they're remarkably invested in user privacy; homekit imo is one of the most forward thinking implementations of smart home technology that I've seen, and the new processor in the iPhone x is a Mammoth powerhouse. So, I'm not necessarily saying anything about that, but what I am saying is that they're iñcredible at marketing, but fanboys but are not self-aware can enough to recognize when the Designed-by-Apple hype over shadows the actual objectivity or the situation. There are articles already talking about Apple's wireless charging.
TL;DR I swear to god if an apple fanboy comes at me saying the bezelless design was Apple's innovation, I'm going to snap. I appreciate what Apple does well, but unfortunately people can't appreciate a product without needing to identify with it.6
Phone CPU on mainline now boosts up to 2.2Ghz. i have arch installed on it as one should and i must damn say im compiling mesa on it and snap its faster than i expected.8
Go to meetups and talk to people. Give presentations at meetups if you can. Get involved in community projects. Love coding. Use your downtime to study new stuff.
When talking to potential employers be positive and enthusiastic about your technology.
EDIT: Oh, a few more. Don't seem desperate for a job. Without saying anything, potential employers should feel like you have other offers and they're being evaluated by you. Ask questions about their company if you get an interview.
Try to give off an air of being in control and having a number of choices in your carreer (even if you're living off ramen every day).
The pressure should be on companies to hurry up and snap you up before another company does.
Be honest but a little spin won't hurt.
Whatsapp REALLY needs a feature to silence the notifications for messages that are image only!
I'm now stuck having to communicate with a group for work so I had to un-silence it's notifications but I get sent 100+ memes and videos a day by EVERYONE else.
As much as I love them if I have to stop coding to check my phone only to find a fucking meme one more time I think I'm gonna snap...3
How to make habits for commitment:
2.Follow a girl in Snapchat
3.Try to make a snap when she does
4.Change from Snapchat to Git
Opened up the authenticator on my watch yesterday and one of the codes (yes this is when you can use plural for the word 'code') was 7000000. Unfortunately I wasn't able to snap a photo of it... :(5
Something isn't working, I play around with the code, and try all possible things in the code. Still it doesn't work. Spend a couple of hours reading each and every line but still in vain. Finally, I find out that I was editing the wrong file (same file at another location) the whole time!! This happened a couple of times when I was a newbie, one of my most annoying mistakes.
Lesson learnt: Now when anybody asks me to debug his code, I first edit/add a print statement to make sure this is the correct file. I thought I was being skeptical, but it has saved me a lot of time (mostly interns do this rookie mistake).2
Currents is back! Take DigitalOcean's survey on Open Source and get free Sammy stickers: http://do.co/currents-survey2
How do you stay sane while developing on top of other people's projects? After building a migration tool on top of LXC (2.x, because.. well, Debian 9 since every bloody option changed in LXC 3.x on Debian 10 and don't even get me started on the snap-crap that is LXD), I'm looking longingly at every intoxicant I have around... The "hmm, so they probably wrote this in response to that but didn't consider so and so..." only goes so far... :/1
So i decided to install VLC on my desktop finally and had to use snap... Can tell you right fucking now I wont be using snap again6
Okay, it's getting a bit annoying to _hear_ my graphics hardware (NOT the fans. The circuits) working when I'm doing something on the screen.. Sometimes it feels like it's gonna snap and burst in flames or smth..13
Did some changes and raised a code review. Some lines' indentation don't align. The senior dev (reviewer) asks me to format according to the project scheme.
Changed all tabs to spaces; lines don't align.
Changed all spaces to tabs (with a heavy heart); surprisingly it still doesn't align!!
I'm like okay, let's dive deeper.. Found that the surrounding lines were indented this way: 4 spaces followed by a tab..!! SERIOUSLY!?! WHY? HOW? I mean how does this kind of shit happen?!
Worst part -> getting ship it after following the current convention!
So here's how the story goes.
I was in my academic writing class the other day and we were learning about APA formatting for our argumentative essays. We have a blackboard, whiteboard, projector connected to a pc and even a lovely projector screen to present with in the classroom.
I sit at the front right of the room. Closest to the window(it's behind me as all the desks face inwards)
Professor walks up to front of class and says we are going to learn how to format our typed essays properly.
Awesome, I thought. Pulled out my XPS laptop and fired it up. As I was making a new Word document, I hear scratching. I look up and the professor is writing with CHALK on the BLACKBOARD. I was astonished. Making matters worse, she started from the far left of the board from which the glare from the window was the greatest. I could not see anything. And from that point on I knew this class was going to be abysmal.
What was so depressing was my professor never once touched the projector. Scraping and erasing. Over and over. Couldn't see if it was a period or a comma after the first initial.
My eyes were never so dry from squinting, rolling my eyes and face-palming over and over. After an hour and 15 minute class, I was not far away from drowning my XPS in my tears.6
I swear I'll snap if someone tells me it's weird that I resize applications to be taller than they are wide. I keep them that way because widescreen monitors came into existence when computers became mainstream and the market shifted to the plebs who only used them to watch videos and wanted to not see any bars on screen, and now we all have to suffer.
Web pages are organized vertically so it makes no sense for me to browse the web in full screen, it wastes space where otherwise all the content is contained and distraction free, most pages strip the side-bars so you'll also see a few less ads. I can also use and organize multiple apps how I want. Small thing too but browsing the web in full screen means pages can find the exact dimensions of your screen and learn more about you (I don't care about this but it's also worth mentioning).
I promise you there are so many good reasons to not use apps in full screen.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.17
Notepad++... A Windows application running in wine wrapped in a snap package... Forgive me for asking, but what the actual fuck?
Notepadqq, a native Linux application is also available as a snap, so who the hell would use this???
I don't know if this is a joke or a miracle.
I was pooping myself on a toilet, and beside me was a bucket of water, then there was a mosquito in my palm where I held my phone. after I snap it, I accidentally threw my phone at the bucket of water.
First and foremost. It's not a water-proof phone, so don't expect that I'm rich. I immediately grab it and it's so wet.
After a while, it gets a lot of touch bug and plugged in headset which is full of water in it.
tried to wash it after I'm done pooping. shut the phone and wait until it's all dry.
After that, my phone went to teamwip(bootloader) telling me that the custom OS is missing.
After some coding, I checked my phone and it's all normal now.
Lesson Learned: never shit when you have a phone with you.4
All the youtubers ranting about adpocalypse, watchtime and such for weeks now..
And tbh i didn't really care. But for fucks sake the AI youtube uses to recommend videos indeed sucks!
You know back in the days, when you listened/watched part 1 of a playthrough and were just fine with the upcoming video because it was part 2, 3, 4 and so on of the series?
FUCK THIS. How about now that you saw part 1 of Scykohs "Pokemon Snap Playthrough", watch some random fucking shit of jacksepticeye?
FUCK YOU. THENKS.
I used to fall asleep and wake up with some chill ass gameplays on my tv. But now I fall asleep with using my remote to direct myself to the next part of the video and wake up to some random ass content nobody wants to watch.
FRIGGIN FIRSTWORLDPROBLEM I KNOW BUT IT SUCKS.1
Random guy messages me on WhatsApp that he needs help, that his friend told him I'm good at blah blah blah.........
the issue: he paid for some random php bitcoin thingy blah blah, sent me a link to the site, pretty straightforward instructions on how to use it. I explained everything to him and he says he wants to tweak the php script before he puts it out.
me: then do it
him: how do I start?
me(in my head): did you not think of this before paying for the script?!
also me: oh well, download xampp, good for beginners, easy to setup.
him: not working! please help me
I knew from the onset that he was a windows user.
he started by running it without admin privileges
I had no idea and kept solving problems that didn't exist until I asked him to snap the log, after explaining how to run a software as administrator, we Solved it
port 80 was taken. had to go through the process of changing the ports, I had to validate every single change.
going through the procedure of reinstalling because he installed to some crappy directory. after all the headaches and then redoing all the processes stated above, it still doesn't work.
one final solution left and I am dropping him like a hot potato. I must have close to a hundred pictures of someone's screen on my phone.
little question: when he types localhost on his browser windows IIS page thingy pops up. I was thinking of changing the server name to localserver: new port address6
If I have to listen to one more trendy, simplistic, shallow, preppy pop song I'm going to snap and beat the living tar out of whatever happens to be in swinging range.
...ok, I won't. But man I'll be tempted.3
So I was just wondering why is do Snapchat take worse photos on android but we have better cameras so I download and check the source code naturally I check the source code and lo and behold I see this apparently snap for android doesn't use the camera it just screenshots it wtf?1
> client has no infrastructure of the project
> dev like me still work on it
> I constantly request for mock-ups and infrastructure
> client never responds back, instead he raises issues ahead of sprint
> I snap back at him
> Client wants call now
> What the fuck
To be honest, I'm gonna take a stand here...fuck this shit man, no clear way of working4
Samsung make such shit phones. My 2 month old s8 completely locked up for about 5 hours today with cpu on 100%. You would get burnes if you touched it. The only apps I have are, instagram, FF, snap, devRant. Smh.8
So just got news via comments about retarded devs leaving twilio creds. in their apps published to the app stores, attached below is an interesting snap of the document appthority has published, wonder who is getting beat up right now for leaking corporate meetings 😶4
Installing a deb file on Manjaro. 😐
Tried Docker...over complicated
Tried dpkg... dependencies nonexistent in manjaro.
The more I use snaps on Linux, the more I feel like we came the full circle. Installable package (snap) contains a bundle of all dependencies, and installs them in an isolated system path to avoid version incompatibilities. Snaps can can have some sort of install-time configuration, and they create links to a handful of entry points rather than adding all executables to the path. In short, they do the exact same thing Windows installers have been doing for the past 30 years.18
I've never written any unit tests for any apps/programs I've developed.
I would tell myself, this time you're going to create some and be a better developer by doing so. I end up just creating the file and that's it.
Most of the bugs are discovered during the user testing phase so I always end up being lazy writing unit tests.
I write very defensive code though so that helps a little but all in all, it's a very bad habit that I need to snap out of4
I normally have my Windows desktop and my Kubuntu laptop, but I’m on “holiday”, and I only brought my laptop. “I can write a simple research proposal on it, right?”, I thought. Ahahahaha, no. Turns out Libre Office and Mendeley are fucking useless on Linux. I had to give up and use my mum’s prehistoric Windows 7 laptop... Also Snap is “great” in theory (basically a Linux setup.exe, rendering packages pointless), but nothing I’ve tried worked so far. Docker can’t figure its permissions out, Chromium cursors break, and Mendeley doesn’t even detect Libre Office as installed. What a fucking shit show. I love Linux for dev, but no fucking surprise that no sane human being uses it for everyday tasks.16
Can anyone tell me if is normal a design department earn more than a IT department??? Am I crazy or this is plain stupid???11
I was having some trouble accelerating the delivery of a new feature and so my team leader joined me for some pair programming (awesome!). Five minutes later I was selecting some, text while explaining some problems, and he stops me.
Team leader: you know, you can select all that text by double clicking it;
Me: ok (continuing to explain)
Team leader: you have to be faster with that;
Me: That's not the point right now;
Why do people focus so much on these little things?! I really like pair programming, or just pairing to think about a problem, but this kind of things really get under my skin...
(Silver lining: Cool team leader that didn't snap after I told him to focus 😅)2
I am currently running a heavily modded version of Ubuntu 18.04. I remove gnome applications, installed xfce with sddm for my login manager, plus removed a bunch of their pre-installed applications. I mostly use AppImages and snaps for installations with occasionally using apt for packages I am too lazy to build or are not in snap form.
I have been contemplating switching to Arch/Antegros/Manjaro. Mostly because I am crazy and heard that I could get a performance boost and I like being more in control of my own software.
My question is this, does it make sense for me to switch distros? Also, I'd like to have a close to the metal Arch install, but last time I did that I got annoyed with configuring too much from the bare bone, took me like close to an hour of setup, it was not hard, just really tedious.... Is Antegros/Manjaro have options to be really close to the bare-metal? Is there maybe a really good install script that I can just tweak some basic settings for?5
I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...
i3, bspwm, xmonad, windowchef, herbstuffwm, awesomewm, fvwm, etc.
I love the cleanliness and productivity aspect of them compared to something like Windows and it's floating/snap feature. Awesomewm looks like a good choice but the config scripting is quite verbose.
So many choices! Probably doesn't help I want to keep it consistent across my laptop and 3 monitor setup (1 21:9, 2 16:9).7
Dear Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, devRant, and almost every social media site available:
Scrolling down on a phone is much less natural than scrolling sideways and having the scroll snap to the next unit of content.
Like every pictures/ gallery app. It's a lot easier to focus on one piece of content and it even shortens the duration of scroll required in many cases thanks to the snapping.6
My last week of vacations. A brake on bussiness programing... lol
Receive a phone call from a colegue:
Hi the equipment it not working.
Me: ( upset with the acuracy) reboot that shit!
Colegue: Its working. Thank you.
Collegue: The printer is not working!
Me: 😡 Im on vacation. Check the cable or try to reinstall the printer...
Colegue: Its working. Thank you.
2 fucking hours later:
Collegue try to call
Me: Did not answer... 😡 Fuch this shit.
Colegue send text message saying that they had a problem on the video projector but its ok now..
I'M ON V A C A T I O N3
Well, been awhile. The latter half of this is probably gonna be unpopular, but the gist of it is that all of the devs working on camera-centric apps, get your shit together, if possible. As mentioned there may not be a way for you to get your shit together, because Google and the others involved ultimately are a mess. In that case, you're dismissed. I haven't proof-read this, so don't take it exactly verbatim.
Woke up this morning to a need for this, so here goes:
OPEN LETTER TO SNAPCHAT
You guys need to get your shit together. This is a tack-on to what Marques Brownlee already stated.
I woke up this morning to a seriously FUCKED UP UI. UX didn't change as much, still looks Snapchat-esque. But holy hell WHAT THE FUCK?
I'm not averse to change, despite the above. HOWEVER, there's an exception to that: You cannot change out UX/UI from under me with no warning. I need to know that within the coming weeks, there will be changes to how I interact/interface within the app. An option to opt into testing would be nice as well, but doesn't look like you guys have that figured out. With that testing should come feedback, and something like Jira, where issues can be reported and triaged. You're a company, unfortunately, so I doubt you'd be willing to even go as far as accepting feedback in the first place, which is a shame.
Seriously, as Marques pointed out, Android Snaps are shitty because the app takes a screenshot of the viewfinder and uses it as a photo. There's no doubt in my mind this is something that others do, but all Android devs need to either not pull this (because it's not clever) or just not make apps (quality over quantity).
I would like to see either Google step in and require a native API that is the same across all devices and leverages all cameras to their full potential (I want to say that Snap's issue stems from an API provided by Google. In this case, Google, get your shit together), or alternatively I'd like to see manufacturers band up to provide a uniform interface to deal with this. Because I don't see the latter happening anytime soon, Google needs to do something about this, although I feel like they probably won't. That said, IDGAF WHO it is, I just want it FIXED.
So we have this local competition and i was tasked to pitch in some help. 2 weeks before, we get a problem with the database so we pull someone from another team to fix it since our hands our full. But his PRICK OF A TEAM LEAD is forcing him not to do it because "It's not priority". So day of the competition - EVERYTHING WAS A MESS. The competition was forfit. We tarnished our company name. BuT his PRICK OF A TEAM LEAD suddenly comes in POINTING FINGERS AT US SAYING "they dont communicate and dont seem competent enough" OHHHH SNAP YOU UNCULTURED GOOSE PRICK FOR TWO WEEKS YOU IGNORED US BUT WHEN WE WENT DOWN YOU SHOWED YOURSELF TO THE BOSS LIKE "it's because they didnt rely on me" WELL KISS MY ASS PRINCE NOT-CHARMING. I really like my company but some people are just TOXIC.
If someone here reads on Medium a lot, this might be useful for you: https://producthunt.com/posts/...
This is my second browser extension and it's open-source. It lets you read all Medium stories for free. Hugs and / or bugs welcome! 😇3
I never stop being amazed by how one of your people call and say "client X is stuck they can't do shit omg omg top tier emergency" and when you ask them what's the issue they say "well idk they didn't say anything, how are you gonna fix it?" as if i had a magic wand and could fix everyone's problems with a snap of my fingers and understanding what's happening with literally 0 details.
Turns out 1 minute later the "issue" was due to the customer being dumb, software was more than fine and running correctly 🤔
We use MDD!! I coined this term one night after getting frustrated and having a lot of drinks. What's that, you ask?
MAGIC DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
It's when you're working on a not-so-recent code base and are afraid to make any changes in fear of breaking things up. You've touched some modules, and now you restrict yourself to work only on those treating all others as a blackbox. Even if something can be achieved by a small change in one of the blackboxes, you still go for multiple changes in the modules you're familiar with! Such is the horror. You start saying that those modules work by some dark magic that nobody understands!
I just published my second chrome extension: mediumship! It lets you read any story on Medium. Feel free to try it out at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
Trying to use WSL, but guess what? You cannot install snaps! Entire afternoon wasted trying to just install a snap!4
Funny ... When they add a feature for web and expect it to also be in the app with the snap of a finger, and the app uses different apis compared to the web ...
Ah and also translations, the translation fairy will add them overnight I guess...
Good thing weekend just started ... Run you FOOLS!!!2
> looking for a ZX81 emulator
> the most accurate one is SDL for Mac
> snap for Linux
> alright fine i'll use stupid fucking gay-ass snap
> after fixing snap's fuckups twice it's finally running
> all my ROMs and BIOSes are on my 4TB HDD mounted at /big and symlinked at ~/big
> SDL CAN'T FUCKING SEE EITHER
> "well it supports drag and drop we'll use that" segfault
> "fine i'll put the bios or w/e it wants in ~" not valid, apparently
Co-workers conversation about the new Google Pixel... "I won't get it because they steal your soul, same reason why I don't have the iPhone with the finger print.. they want to have all your information... blah blah..."
I laugh, because they device doesn't matter... your info gets stolen in transit... so all your snap chat, IG DMs, and all of communication potentially at risk to be "stolen".
Example, Gov't splicing into underwater fiber optic cables and redirecting traffic to a data center...
Understand the tech.. please.2
This poster is shite quality but I've transcribed the gold found on it:
The Technical Support Specialist:
- SEND US AN URGENT EMAIL IN UPPERCASE. We'll flag it as a rush job. Really.
- Loves it when a user calls screaming "the internet is broken".
- Gonna snap the next time a user asks why they don't have permission to install a George Michael screensaver.
- Last vacation: catching the first rays of sun from the back booth in Tim Hortons. Sweeeeeet!
- Most dreaded words: "I don't know what happened, I only opened the attachment".
- Has memorized over 100 access codes, but can't remember what day it is.
- Is amazed a user can have five chatrooms and three celebrity sites opened at once - but reading an I.T. support e-mail sent with high importance - now that's a complicated request.
- When you call with a tech support problem and say you'll be back in 5 - I'll say "Great!" And try not to snicker.
- System crashed last Thursday. Haven't seen my wife and kids since.2
Worst question I have seen around here.
I only had, at the moment, 3:
The first one was... unsignificant. Never learn anything important/relevant from him.
The second one didn't payed me for three months. I had to quit.
Still waiting for him to pay....... just being ironic his not going to pay.
The third one is bipolar and... well I already had stories shared here...so you can have a look.
I could say that I had another one. Is was my Father... best man in the world. My hereo. Learn the best things with him: Honesty, loyalty and Hardwork.
Sorry from any kind of mistakes on my writting. Long day and long night.
Django was the first then meteor js snap my heart, a few years of love and hate relationship I finally realized phoenix was the one all a long even though I kept thinking about meteor js from time to time <34
Fuck ubuntu 18.04 with their snap format. Yes it's good for things that ubuntu users need, like libreoffice or Chrome.
But GOD SAKE WHY DOCKER ?
21 days ago it was not even possible to modify daemon.json reliably xD4
As a dev I never gave the possibility of someone using my notebook, PC or phone to snap a photo of me much thought because I just assumed that whoever made the camera module was smart enough to make it so that whenever the CCD/CMOS sensor receives power an LED wired to the same rail lights up - letting you know the camera is on... BUT! That is an assumption I made, has anyone looked how are webcams wired up? Can anyone confirm my assumption?5
Warning I get really nit picky in this
I’ve been enjoying my Manjaro experience so far but the only gripe I’ve managed to come across is fucking VS Code. Since I downloaded it via .tar.gz I have to redownload the .tar.gz each fucking update. WHICH WOULDNT BE A PROBLEM IF THE WEBSITE JUST GAVE ME A SOLID DOWNLOAD LINK I CAN USE IN AN AUTOMATION SCRIPT BUT FUCKING NO ITS AN EVENT FOR WHEN YOU CLICK ON THE LINK FOR .tar.gz SO FUCK ANY PYTHON OR BASH SCRIPTS I COULD COME UP WITH,
and before someone fucking says it yes I can use “Code - OSS” (the version on github) which I know I fucking am using it but I don’t like it even though it is the exact same thing, minus text that is supposed to say VS Code and the vscode icon.
Unless I’m retarded and could have updated it with the tar.gz manually or automating it somehow (which I couldn’t find a solution for Manjaro/arch based systems) I’m still getting used to Linux and installing software without a package manager (which I’m still using it but for some things I try to install it without a package manager) so if I am missing something please just ignore my dumbass and educate me.
And if you try to recommend using the Snap store, let me stop you. No.10
everytime when i meet with my friends and they ask me if what course i'm currently taking and of course i'm gonna answer back "IT"
(~) what i say in my mind
statements that will suddenly pop into conversation
-"can you (reformat, fix, update, etc.) my pc/laptop"
~oh stahp it, youuu
-"don't forget to treat us when you graduate, i heard jobs in your field have great salaries"
~gezzus i'm still a student and i am struggling, then you want me to treat you.
-"hey man, can you build me a website (for free)"
~yea dude, let me ask genie to snap that wish of yours
-"oh so you must be good with computers?"
~yea i treat them well, i tell them bedtime stories and feed them with milk and cookies
~the long silence makes this even more awkward
-"hey man, i code and design too, maybe we can work together"
-"how many coffee?"
~i truly found my mate.
these are some of the statements i've encountered, what's yours?
For folks who are participating in #Hacktoberfest this year, here's a good resource to keep tabs on everything that's on the table: https://producthunt.com/posts/...1
How to implement freakin OTPs ...
Loggin in ...
Click on Request OTP -> Not available
Click on Forgot password -> Send the OTP to both phone and Email.
The OTPs on phone and mail must not be the same.
So basically, user can't Login by entering OTP received on one of mail or phone.
Just ... fk the user while logging in already ... Entering the order entry in the database in twenty one minutes will do the rest. 😒
F***ing GitHub Actions.
I just wanted to make Snapcraft builds of my game with CI and instead I'm fiddling around with YAML syntax because for some reason everything got formatted incorrectly.
Also I have no way of testing the workflow locally to save me commits. So I have to wait five minutes each time to find out that I yet again somehow mucked up the script and it couldn't snap the executable.7
The first rant that I'm going to do here is by writing a reminder note on posting a comment regarding Snap's inability to properly give response to the users on a solution post in Medium.
Here is the reminder:
Everything sucks: Windows, Linux, Mac, Ubuntu, Wine, Snap, Lutris every fucking program they are always fucked up, no fucking program is near to perfection. Let alone leave that fucking Snap response.7
Day off today, and I decide to go to Remington with my parents. However, I am working on a coding project and I'm forced to work and watch simultaneously. No problem.
However, for THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD, my parents decide that it's not good enough, so they decide to **abandon** me at Remington and go get food elsewhere. I start calling and they don't pick up.
I'm freaking out and go over to the McDonald's and voila, they are right there eating McDonald's and calling me a bad son for not paying attention to them.
Some days I just want to snap my computer in half.2
On a Mac / when I close the lid Chrome Canary opens up 40+ tabs with the snap message. Anyone seen this? It's freaking annoying and it happens every single time.1
Any tinker's here?
I'm in no way one, but I have to start with something, and recently I've buy a Moto Z2 Play, that has this little and nice interface that allows "Moto Mods", practically are modules that you "snap on/off" and add functionality to your phone.
Does anyone here have tried the MDK? do you think this is promising or just another trend to get lost in the way?
when you just want to set up a tiny automation and end up compiling a custom snap package for 3 hours...1
