So I had my first "real" interview today. It was for an internship at a big company and I really wanted that internship. I know I'm more than capable for that position and I made a hell of a good job on the coding challenge they sent (or at least I think so). But I went unprepared for that interview and I think I fucked up.
The guy asked me what were my strengths and weaknesses (of fucking course, cliche question). I had no idea what to answer, I was caught completely off guard. So I said I never quit as a strength and I couldn't think of any weaknesses. It was a very corny response but I didn't mean to say exactly that. I wanted to say that even if something is frustrating and I have to bang my head against the wall for three days, I won't give up on a task. It's basically the same as saying what I said, but it does feel nicer and less corny y'know? And as a weakness I could've said that I didn't have experience working with a team, as I've always worked solo.
I could have been awesome, but I didn't prepare myself for the interview. I really, really wanted that internship since that'd be awesome on my resume, I'd earn some of my own money and I'd learn a whole fucking lot.
Deep down I still have some hope that I'll get an e-mail back and I'll get the position, but I think I won't. This sucks. I am qualified, BUT I DID AN AWFUL JOB ON LETTING THEM KNOW I'M QUALIFIED.
I just wanted it so bad :(6
Junior, junior, junior. I'm like -junior. We want a junior with 3 years experience. How is someone supposed to get to the 3 years experience if there aren't any jobs accepting juniors will no professional experience. I can code, , albeit not professionally, that's why I want a job, to learn in a professional setting, but the junior jobs all want past experience.
Maybe one day. Maybe never. For now I'll just keep rolling on the grind in my shitty factory job. Moving boxes from one place to another with the toughest mental challenge being which way to stack said boxes.7
I believe this was the last attempt I had at doing a project for this customer before I just stopped replying to emails. I cannot emphasise enough how brutal it was communicating with this person. This was years ago. I'll keep it simple:
Customer: "Yeah so we need this page to look *exactly* like this. I've attached a picture, and I'll need this done soon because we're running a newsletter campaign soon."
Me: "Alright, I'll have it done by the end of the week." (I paid a student to do it, their work was impressive, it looked *EXACTLY* like the picture, but was now a functional web page)
*end of week*
Customer: "This is too exact!! I was hoping you guys would have some creativity, and have it do this and that!"
Me: "You said exact, we made it exact. I can do additional work to it."
Customer: "Well, we're not paying for additional work!!"
I left it at that.6
If you are reading Coding for dummies book to learn software you are doing it alllll wrong lol ... Please while I appreciate your effort and willingness to try but no.. just no.. put the book down that book won’t teach you shit.
Same thing if you are one of those folks who got conned into believe “you can land a programming gig by signing up and paying for this 6 week course!!” Bullshit.. I like your initiative but there’s soooooo much more than that and it won’t even touch the surface. You will end up believing a false reality that you think you know what your doing but you don’t know how much you really don’t know. But like it doesn’t even scratch the surface don’t even attempt Get a job after those courses or coding for dummies book. You will be laughed at..
In fact I almost want to buy the coding for dummies book to have it in my collection of software books to not read. Which I will say is very small. There’s more really good books than really bad.. and obviously plenty of average. But the bell curve lands above the better half.7
Oh my god did you know the Windows registry has a folder for icon overlays, like the little checkmarks on OneDrive and Dropbox files?
Guess what. Windows only loads the first like 13 of the registered overlays *in alphabetical order* which has programs fight over the top spots by prepending spaces and whatnot on their registry keys. What a great system...4
Normal people dream about shit before they go to sleep.
I, on the other hand, try to formulate a hypothesis that I'm already stuck on for 3 business days, thereby giving myself anxiety, henceforth failure to sleep.
I'm just perfect! 👌🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️29
If my GitHub contributions graph was any more pathetically anemic, it would be my dating history.20
Im really starting to hate applying all those jobs and having no response or that they are not interested.
Been trying for a month or so. Applied to a lot of jobs.
Just today i got first call that they would be interested. Heck the person said i would be be hired ASAP with my experience (Repairing phones hardware and software, Nearly perfect job TBH)
The issue why i didnt get it ?
The site showed it to me even tho i was looking for a part time job or remote full time job. They wanted full time guy and since im going to uni in 2 or so months i cannot just do that sadly.
I only apply to jobs for fresh out of school people or when i know i fit all the criteria required.
2 funny stories so far.
Applied and got response that they are not interested because they are looking for people with 5+ years experience in that field (In real work. Not just hobby or open source projects. (Fuck you. Count open source projects as experience)) And yes this was job for fresh out of school people. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME ?
HOW THE FUCK?
Just how ?
Second story is basically the same.
So i truly dont know what the fuck im doing wrong.
I cant be without a job this summer as im going to uni. Yes the uni is paid by state but i still need money to live somehow.
Im even considering going to a fucking cashier job just to get some money. Yes that would be crazy but well if it will be the only choice i will take it.25
Today we're going over a list of mouth breathers that I strongly dislike.
- people that don't turn their turn signal on until they've basically come to a complete stop.
- people who can't follow the pattern in grocery stores. THERE ARE FUCKING STICKERS ON THE FLOOR. FOLLOW THE FUCKING PATTERN.
- people that post on a forum and then never respond to the replies on their posts8
I'm 54 y.o.
I do understand software development, agile, web application development, linux server, basic/moderate AWS skills, etc.
Now they laid me off instead of including me in the evolution of version 2 of the software. Maybe covid, company had almost no cash-flow. Well they have now...So basically they fired me to find money to rewrite the application.
I feel without hope at my age.
I'm a generalist.
I can understand fairly well everything you'll throw at me, reactnative, angular, nosql, python, but I have little first-hand experience.
I don't have a lot of management skills, even if I've given frequent presentations to C-roles and board, and I implemented a whole agile methodology in my team.
I don't know what to do.
The amount of technology to study is huge nowadays. When I was younger I could get away with some php and java.
Full-stack developer is a big word for me. Maybe I could handle a full stack web application, but not from scratch.
I feel at my age, I'll compete with 20-something guys with better skills and lower salary requests.
I don't think I can pull a night anymore.
I'm trying to shoot high to management positions with no much success.
I'd like to go on developing, I know that there are 50-something developer out there, but who managed to find a new position at 55? at 60?
As soon as I finish the few money I spared, I'll be on the street, I'l be the "website for food" guy.62
I have uploaded lots of books on a GitHub repository to help fellow programmers and comrades get access to resources. I downloaded them from Z-library and Imperial Library of Trantor (some kind of anarchist sites on the deep web). Am I going to get a DMCA takedown request?5
Why do so many beginners gave this retarded notion that freelancing is easy? Little shits really expect to read one HTML tutorial and start making money off the internet?9
This is stupid, how am I supposed to show my work projects in my portfolio if my boss insists on using a fucking non responsive css library.1
When I think about "collapsing the stack" (more out of the box features), I realise that Microsoft was way ahead of the curve.
Deno aims to make everything so much simpler because it has squashed all the tools you need into one (whether it's in one binary is just a detail), but Microsoft was already doing this with C# and Visual Studio years ago.
I do not mean to suck off Microsoft, I just wish the open source community would leave its tribalism mentality and see how corporations have tried to make developer experience better.
"What do developers actually need?" is not a question many open source projects ask.
It's slowly happening with Deno and Go leading that front, but we have a long road ahead of us.6
Unemployment week one.
Tired of unsuccessful HR and engineering talks with people who don’t know what they want.
When you answer their questions they got pissed because they had something else in mind. Sorry I don’t read in people’s minds asshole.
Others try to be smart and give you some fancy acronyms. Yeah because that’s most important in coding - to memorize useless acronyms.
I responded with acronyms I know and they got pissed more cause my are more funny and cover all of theirs. Thanks KISS 💋
Some of them are like I am fucking smartest asshole on this video chat and you can’t have been working with all of those technologies, yeah I just typed hello world for 15 years in one language and stupid /REST shitty software like you do it in your one job in your lifetime.
Others are asking for cv, talking about this fancy great project that in fact you know how it will look like cause you’re experienced motherfucker who can pick up nuisance but still lets get hired first and then think what to do next with this shitty crap. So they respond after two weeks that client changed their mind and if you want to fill some quiz about your hiring process.
There are also ones that got impressed so much they’re talking 1 hour that you will be our next cto and then ending process with email that there were better candidates and also post same offer on job board next day 🤦♂️
I think I just skip this shitty nightmare and concentrate on some personal project until I spend all my savings.
I just need to concentrate on one thing and not get distracted with 1000s of voices shouting “pick me” in my head.
If you got offended fuck you unless you like it.
After working in one project in a big happy days bubble without distraction for couple of years I underestimated how fucked up people are in real world.
We’re making hell by ourselves on this planet we don’t need much help.5
Time for a treat: a company I've applied to 16 years ago just went out of business due to bad management. Wasn't going to work there anyway because they were utter idiots but they turned me down because I took a piss at the CTO for being a wanker in some respects and also "your code formatting isn't what we expect from a senior programmer". Just placed a backorder for their domain name, will post some stupid goat sex shit there once it goes through. Cheers suckers!7
So I have started to learn JS ! Its been 2 months I dont know what the fuck am I doing and I think I m going to die soon!7
Damn, CSS Grid and Flex are fucking awesome!
I've been using both at least a year now and with a handful of SCSS mixins they have made the never-ending misery of front-end bearable.
Before I was forced to use Bootcrap floating grid and it was just a fucking mess and in some cases made JS hacks necessary.4
Okay so i did an internship in Laravel for 6 months. I started there and i had zero experience with it. Later, i started to learn more about it and i realized their Laravel version was at 5.8 and their bootstrap was at 3.4. It annoyed me so much but i wasn't allowed to update it to a better version.
What happened is, i installed Linux on my laptop and had to install some things. I accidentally did composer update and updated the whole thing. I updated it to Laravel 7.4 and i thought, well, that's good right, it will not effect the whole project right? No it wasn't right. I got Teams messages from my colleagues. They normally don't really respond to me, ignoring me but this time, they responded quickly. It was wrong what i've done because the code on the server wasn't working anymore and it was pretty bad they said. So i had to get the last version in Gitlab and i should not do composer update again.
Also, i was annoyed because i couldn't use so many font awesome icons. They all didn't work! I had to make this dropdown menu with an arrow down but even that didn't work, so i used a transparent image to do it because that was my only option to have a good arrow. I wanted to update that as well but nope, not allowed.
Oh yes, i'm not done yet.
They have put so much CSS on the project, that i couldn't even use bootstrap columns. I struggled with that and seriously, no help. The pages were styled really weird and it was dramatic.
When i asked for help, for some PHP code for example, no one responded for days and i was angry about that. Later at the end of my internship, they told me I wasn't the one who was responding and that i should have asked for help and i had to start the conversation. They really just said that? Yes, they did and i'm not happy about that. It costed me some points on my end essay, because they haven't been doing their best.
I wanted to learn more about PHP, but ended up doing all the frontend. I like it, but it's not what i originally wanted to do. So basically, i learned stuff in frontend but almost nothing in backend. It saddens me and hope to get a better internship next schoolyear.
I really had to rant about this, oops.1
when a brand (literally any social media) doesnt provide a clear answer to "what are your brands colors?"
then they can go fuck themselfs if they come to me "you are violating the terms of the use of our brand" and i will go trough the effort to mail them a stool sample
The dev.to code of conduct is irritating.

I thought I could trust Samsung phones for a flagship phone purchase over the Chinese smartphone brands.
But I just learned that even these fuckers are now running ads in the OS.
I guess I'm gonna have to switch to iPhone then.11
