I was giving an interview this other day and I was sharing my screen with the interviewer.
Interviewer 😦: Is this linux you are using?
Me 😅: Ah yes. Since this is a coding round I am not comfortable on windows for coding.
Interviewer 😳: And this is your personal laptop?
Me 😁: Yes, since the only use of windows is primarily to play games and the games I play are usually supported on linux, I dont see any reason why my daily driver should be anything other than linux.
Interviewer 😯: What distro is this?? Looks cool.
Me 😆: Its Ubuntu with KDE Plasma. There are some really cool things in here which actually make my life quite easier.
Interviewer ☺️: I must check this out today itself. Lets start with the interview then.
Me 😊: *Blushing in my mind
And this is how you score some instant brownie points in an interview. Actually if truth be told, that laptop was actually my work laptop and my personal laptop has windows on it because nvidia and Assassin's Creed.22
so, yesterday I configured a server for a production,
today I rushed into the room only to find a server with KDE plasma installed, Pycharm editor and a browser open.
WTF, how long until all developers realize that a terminal is a UI.2
I know posts like this one don`t belong here but I`m so super proud of it...
I`ve finally (after like 2 days) finished setting up my macbook-air-arch-linux-kde-plasma and this is what it looks like. If any of you is interested I can share some details about making certain things compatible with apple hardware.
Giving openSUSE tumbleweed a try. Damn KDE is so sexy!
1. Looks great
2. Looks great on my tv😂 (much better than fedora)
3. Its fast!13
Since apparently lots of you are into Linux, I would like some advice.
I'm wanting to install a distro to use as my main OS, but there is just too much choice.
I'm coming from Windows 10 so I read that KDE is a good choice for a desktop environment and the Plasma version looks pretty good.
Yesterday I've tried Deepin OS but I'm not a huge fan, looks good but not enough content / customization.
So right now I'm hesitating between Manjaro (with KDE) and Elementary OS.
Would you recommend any of these, and why ?
Btw, this is my first rant 😎23
From my working laptop, used for everything (/everything/). Have gone through multiple DEs: starting with Xfce, to Deepin (briefly), also Gnome (extremely briefly), and Budgie (meh), KDE Plasma 5 (my battery D:), i3 to give my battery a break, and lastly Cinnamon for the last 3ish months, and so far no major gripes. Haven't had any serious issues in between, and very rarely does anything serious break after a pacman -Syu ;) has been the most fun I've had with any OS so far
Share your $(head -1 /var/log/pacman.log)2
Not long ago I claimed that I don't like KDE Plasma. And now I am using it as my only DE and realize what I was missing out.4
Used Ubuntu for like more than a year now, liked its Unity DE. Now they have gnome, which is "meh" for me. So I moved to Kubuntu. (Also trying out Manjaro)
Omg KDE plasma is so awesome o.o it's a whole new world, I am amazed. And everything is working just fine! And it is beautiful.
I have tried a lot of distros. Initially almost all the light and fast ones, then recently almost every environment. LXDE, MATE, Xfce, Cinnamon, GNOME... universally in every forum it’s been said GNOME and KDE are the heaviest, followed by Unity Cinnsmon etc.
Curiously I had never tried KDE. Not once. Until now. And by God is it light!
It’s running on 500MB RAM on a cold boot, that’s less than MATE! And I don’t feel any skimping in graphics or feel. It’s amazing!
Is it because of suse? I am quite shocked at this. I like almost everything about this. Except the uneven font stylings which should be easy enough to take care of.
Been thinking of doing this for years. But I think I'm finally gonna try it.
I want to dual boot my PC. Probably gonna go with Arch Linux + Plasma KDE.4
I always love trying something new, especially when it's Linux.
In this case, I'm installing Plasma Mobile on my phone to see how it handles.1
Just finished installing arch linux on my notebook. Using kde plasma 5 but no it doesnt scale properly on my 4k screen4
To do list:
- Become a better dev
- Install Archlinux and Plasma
- Finish teaching my brother C#, F#, SQL
- Learn Xamarin better
- Actually use my programming skills to create useful tools for myself (and maybe my friends and family)
- Finally add one of my personal projects to GitHub
Thank you KDE for setting alt+F4 by default, my brother did not have tons of fun closing my eidtors and it did not take me 15 Minutes to find the setting (┛◉Д◉)┛┻━┻
Still loving Plasma nonetheless ;-)11
I've seen posts about Manjaro quite a lot recently. Just wondering:
How many of us are using Manjaro as daily usage system. And why not other?
For me it is because it connects ease of use of Ubuntu (or even Win) with possibilities of Arch. And I always liked KDE. Plus it works out of the box, with Nvidia drivers ready and stuff.2
I want to create an Dual Boot on my PC with Windows which should be for gaming and stuff and Ubuntu which should be for Development.
But I can't decide which Desktop I will take but, I have Marked two as very nice: Mint and KDE Plasma.
All these Decisions 😫7
Can anyone suggest me a Linux Distro or an Ubuntu Desktop Environment that:
- Has beautiful interface
- Is not slow
- Allows customization
I don't like Unity and Gnome because of the shit interface. I installed KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) but it's slow af and buggy.
I want something that has fast window management, Mac-like Dock, and just something that increases productivity.15
Yesterday I spent the whole fucking day trying to install Debian stretch + KDE plasma in my laptop (i7, nvidia 960m...). Fucking nouveau crashed always debian started, installed nvidia drivers without success (more crash), and bumblebee did not help at all. Went to sleep at 4 am without success
Today woke up 6 am, reinstalled debian one more time, and decided just to blacklist nouveau (fuck nvidia). Aaaand success!!! Everything works like charm right now, it's very stable, handles civilization in steam, plus kde plasma is gorgeous. So yeah I quit the nvidia video card but totally worth it.
The cherry to the cake is that I don't need windows at all now :)1
Experience with Plasma Mobile, part 2.
I was able to clone the official master repository and commit my hacks to it, but when I sent the pull request, the current active maintainer said that the master branch was actually severely out of date and to try the "halium-flash" branch.
So I did. I checked out the "halium-flash" branch and attempted to install Plasma Mobile. The bash file used to flash the phone still needed to be hacked around, though my previous commit was made irrelevant by the change. However, I did get it working on my phone.
So, here are my thoughts: It's most definitely not ready. The lock screen looks pretty and is well put together, and the "desktop" and icons for applications look very nice.
However, my phone does not have a physical "home" button, and Plasma Mobile to date does not have a digital "home" button. So, in order to close an application I have to literally reboot my phone.
As of yet there seems to not be any tactile feedback or visual feedback, which is odd when typing in the passcode to log into Plasma Mobile or trying to open an application.
Firefox crashes if you try to open it, and currently there are two choices of wallpaper. I haven't tried calling someone, but I'm fairly certain that Plasma Mobile does not support telephony on my phone type.
So, my verdict is still the same: I have great hopes for the Plasma Mobile project, but unless you are a developer who is interested in making it a better product, I would stay away for now.6
Got my dual boot setup installed again so I've got an overwatch free environment to work in, promptly ditched Ubuntu Unity and replaced it with Plasma, I forgot just how pretty it is O: anyone had issues with the graphical corruption/flickering with Plasma?
Experience with Plasma Mobile:
After an hour of confusion and bash file trolling (as in scrolling through a bash file, not trolling someone with a script), I ended up needing to reinstall Lineage OS on my phone.
While it's a new and seemingly exciting expanse for modern Linux and Android phones, it's very obviously not ready yet.
Even after fixing some bugs within the bash file, my phone seemed to have a mind of its own; prematurely attempting to boot into the OS during a critical part of the setup. Even after finishing the setup correctly, my phone never actually boots into the system.
While I like the concept behind Plasma Mobile, it does still have a ways to go. But I have some hopes that the project will start getting bigger and better as the time goes on.2
Why doesnt Windows have something like KDE connect or Airdrop? I hate uploading files to a cloud and downloading them again on the pc just because i dont have a cable at hand!4
Is anyone using Wayland with KDE-Plasma environment already? I'm still waiting for this to work on my laptop. X doesn't support multi-monitor scaling which I desperately need
Gonna have to be instrumental music, be it movie soundtracks(Star Wars <3) or whatever randy dandy music I have, like Sabaton.
Also my never ending promise to myself to finally install a new Linux distro on my main machine with KDE Plasma.. dat stuff gooooood
