5 years as a software engr. In the last year I have programmed in java, js, ruby, and python professionally.
Just want to thank the guys contributing to linting tools. ESLint, Prettier, and other syntax helpers/correction tools.
You guys are awesome.2
Let me make a small change to this file, a one-line pull request will probably be accepted right away

So, I've been talking to this girl for a couple weeks now, and she fucking makes me happy guys. I kinda mentioned her once or twice on here, but I didn't really want to say much cause I wasn't sure how stuff was gonna go with her.
But basically now, we're just "talking" if that makes any sense to any of the younger, more social audiences here. For those who may not get what I mean, it's like we're not really looking for anyone else, but we're not really official or anything. Just somewhere in between like friends and dating (she confirmed this for me cause I've made assumptions before and got hurt so I wanted everything to be crystal clear)
I actually met her because she has a class with one of my friends. I mentioned their class in my contribution to the weekly rant this week, where the graphic design class was doing some basic webdev. I skipped my anatomy class to go there one day, started talking to her (actually the day of my rant where I said I'd been up for like ~30 hours or however many it was. LIKE EVERYTHING I POST ENDS UP REFERENCED IN ANOTHER POST), and just kept skipping mainly to see her. Then my friend gave me her Discord and we started actually talking to each other.
Within like 2 hours of us first messaging we had one of those like cute couple arguments. It was over who had prettier eyes, cause I have blue eyes (that people usually say are beautiful, I posted a couple pictures here once), and she has really pretty green eyes. I said that hers looked better, but she said that mine do....She won the argument.
Since then, it's just been fun and cute and I fucking love it. SHE EVEN SAID A PICKUP LINE TO ME A FEW NIGHTS AGO THAT I JUST LOVED. It was "your eyes are more gorgeous than any source code I have ever seen". She found it online, but like at the time, that really touched me.
I'm just so excited about all this guys. She's adorable and I love talking to her. The one thing that's KINDA weird is that she has the same name as my younger sister, but we call my sister a shortened version of the name, so it's not THAT weird.
And I'm just rambling at this point, like I generally do with my rants. She actually knows my profile name and everything (but she isn't on here, she does art, not computers), so she could possibly see this, but I'll likely end up sending it to her at some point anyways.7
Name a more iconic duo than web developers on help sites and having pissing contests over which modules they use instead of actually answering the question!
I've been a web dev/server admin for all of about a month now, and only known PHP for about a week of that, and the one thing really that grates on me isn't PHP's odd function naming inconsistencies or at times outright trash documentation, it's the other developers who, when asked a fairly straightforward question about why a mysqli function won't return something, demand you use PDO instead.
Please. I'm running a LEMP stack on a Raspberry Pi here, I'm trying to keep dependencies to an absolute minimum because the SD card is tiny, the Pi will catch on fire if it runs any hotter, and more dependencies are more potential points of failure. Just answer the damn question. I'm not going to install PDO for something I know I can do anyway just because it makes my code look slightly prettier.
Honourable mention to all you Node.js developers out there too, with your thousands of useless npm dependencies. I salute you.8
As I imagine most of you do, I have a prettier plugin installed in my IDE. It just turned a 1000 line sql script into almost 6000 lines 🙃5
I’m skipping class to go do homework at my partner’s university. Their campus is so much prettier than mine, mines depressing and grey. Normally I really enjoy being in school, but it’s times like this I just feel sad and run down, I just wanna be working already...1
Switched back to windows because I needed IIS for work and I did miss having a touch screen (could not get driver working on Linux).
A few gripes.
I mean, the standard "oh great, half a day downloading and updating my machine" applies.
The thing I forgot about Windows is that after everything I do it wants to restart. Updating itself forced the computer to restart several times, wtf.
Powershell (ironically) holds a shadow of bash's power
So many "power user" actions are done with a gui, dear lord give me a terminal command and a man page any day over the convoluted way to do some actions. Changing permissions for IIS was several layers of gui dialogues, where it would be a couple of commands in bash.
Sorry to be unoriginal and moan about an OS, as an end user windows is great and a lot more streamlined and arguably prettier, but as a programmer it doesn't make life half as easy as the realm of *nix1
all of them. countless wasted hours.
as fate decided to turn me from $random-dev-geek into "the guy that calls the shots in tech", one of my earliest decisions was to automate formatting.
everywhere, automated at CI.
gofmt was an inspiration for the industry.
js?/ts? use prettier
C++? use ClangFormat
always default settings.
enforced by pre-commit hooks and CI.
never a single argument about bracket style, I don't care if someone likes single or double quotes better.
"fucks given" counter is fixed at 0.
everybody prefers it (ok, sometimes after a while sometimes)
of course there is still some more conventions to do for us humans.
IMHO the most critical ones.
like naming or even casing (camel, snake, kebab, - which one works where), but taking out most of the "so what" decisions takes discussions to a much more resonable level.6
Used a starter to scaffold a new project. Have never used that starter before but it has more than 1400 starts on Github.
Two days after.... so far so good. The created project structure used some tools I haven't used before, some are good, others are not so good, but anyway I am towards the first release of my codes. I have done countless 'npm run build', 'npm run test', 'npm run fix', etc., but.... my fault, I haven't committed once since starting the project, thinking I would commit when the next function is implemented, next test case passed.... after all, what could go wrong anyway?
Finally, one last test case passed, I think I will commit and run 'npm publish'.... but wait, had a glimpse of the scripts section in package.json, there's a command named 'all'. An voice came out of nowhere was talking to my subconscious mind, "all.... build, lint, prettier, test..... yeah you should run all... it's another build script, the worst you can get is just some harmless error messages.....", and my fingers typed 'npm run all'...
Time stopped for a few seconds, file structure in project explorer was shifting, files & folders were disappearing & appearing, what's happening... and I looked at the 'all' script closely for the first time....
WHAT THE HELL, WHO SHOULD PUT 'git reset --hard' IN A BUILD SCRIPT WITHOUT ANY PROMPT????!!!!!!!
MY PLAN WAS TO COMMIT AND GO TO SLEEP, IT'S 1AM NOW!!! WHERE CAN I RECOVER THE LOST FILES????4
When you realize that the non-native web-based Spotify App for macOS is faster, prettier, more responsive, more robust and more useful than the native Apple Music app... Good job, Apple.3
What I'm doing now, writing a JS library for a simple kitchen timer (like, something that can be wound up, is ticking, can be paused, etc). Here's a list of neat stuff I've learned:
Polyfilling as a lib author (I decided against it).
Packaging the lib (using Rollup, ES6 modules are totes cool).
Using flow to add static typing in strategic places (started appreciating types in JS since reading up on functional programming).
Modelling state and transitions using an explicit state machine. (Fucking finally. There's usually an implicit state machine somewhere, only spread out all over the app...)
Using mostly side-effect free methods, being very explicit about when and why things are mutated).
Test-first/TDD (ish) using Jest and the awesome Wallabyjs.
Freeing up mental capacity by letting Prettier format my code for me (it was hard to let go but totally worth it).
Started using git.
Did all work on Ubuntu after pretty much a lifetime of Windows (initially to separate work from gaming) and finally swapped MS Visual Studio for Atom.
When it's finished I'm going to publish it on GitHub, which will also be a first for me. Might try out some CI platform while I'm at it.
tl;dr: wrote some js, felt good2
These are the rules that apply to all of my JS projects:
- 100% typescript, “any” is not allowed
- strict prettier with pre-commit hook
- no semicolons
- no braces around single argument of an arrow function
Which phones do you recommend?
Which have given you the fewest problems?
I want something with custom rom support so i can add my own problems (duh) and to make it prettier. Apart from that, the only other deal breakers are a lack of wireless charging (I have children who break everything) and an awful screen. I'm not really picky about anything else, but I do want it pretty.
Anyone have a phone like this that they actually like?17
Friend: "what is it, you love so much about being a developer?"
Me: "The feeling & satisfaction of writing something better & prettier than my past self."
Friend: "Oh. You sound like a Manga writer, I understand about as much about their mind as yours.."
Me: "Yeaah.. Can't argue there.. Can I? *chuckles*"
When the online invoicing software you have used for the last 4 years gets a major upgrade, only to find there's a massive feature cull and the interface is prettier but far less intuitive. Time to look elsewhere :-). Pity, I loved it and got tonnes of people on to it.2
As a sequel to my previous rant:
Me: git pull origin develop
Prettier: * runs *
* 5000 new changes in 43 files *
Thanks prettier, that's exactly what i wanted to happen. I guess it's time for me to tweak its settings a little.4
You know how it is, you are doing ok with your tatty made from salvaged spaceship dodging the pirates and doing a spot of mining.
When you start asking for advice..
How could I do things better ?
Well, everyone and their dog says what a rubbish setup you got and how you should get a top of the line model Tesla or something.
So, after much research about how much better those are, and listening to everyone else, you trade in your old model for a newer one..
Then you find out what a piece of junk it is !
It's 10 times more complicated to use, not really fun anymore..
It isn't quite as good, you worry it is going to break every time you park and bump the side of the parking bay..
Too late now, you traded in your old piece of junk that you loved..
It's just not the same..
It looks prettier I guess..
Perhaps that is a metaphor for relationships. :-)5
/me joining a new front-end project with enforced prettier rules to complete the build pipeline.
No double-quotes ! Single-quotes all the way !
- weird flex, but OK. I'll comply
No CRLF ! LF only !
- Ok, now you're starting to annoy me. With git autocrlf I can have my precious CR locally bu check in only LF and YOU CAN GIVE THE FUCK ABOUT WHAT LINE ENDINGS I USE LOCALLY WHEN EVERYTHING WILL BE CORRECT WHEN PUSHING COMMITS!
No semi-colons !
- Now I hate you18
Prettier breaks mixin formatting and there's absolutely no way to configure it.
And this is why "opinionated" is a negative adjective and its positive counterpart is "adaptable".18
Writing a small program for my Pi, which has to have a gui, process rfid information and do some stuff with motors and leds.
Unfortunately I don't know c++, so I have to write this all in python.
Gui's in python are the ugliest pieces of shit ever. Even fucking c# winforms are prettier than them.
Currently using PyQt5 as it is the less ugly of the bunch but man, you'd think python would have a lot more ui options considering the love it receives...4
Why is there always one asshole!
New job just a month in, had a meeting where we could bring up improvements and put them on cards.
I brought up the idea of using slack so we could collaborate better or maybe a collab space. We all have our own offices or share with high walls.
The guy running the meeting has the same title as me said we never had that before, are you unhappy with yiur onboarding?
Slack or a messaging app is industry standard for even none tech companies. I was polite and said it was just a suggestion and it might make it easier to get help for the new people if there is a group chat.
Also brought up using a formatting standard so code reviews are spent commenting on spacing. I said we could you prettier to implement that and just pick a standard.
He said that was an issue because people were not paying attention before they pushed the code.
I am sorry I am new so I am rewriting and rewriting code all the time. I was to format on save and not spend time fucking formatting!
I could use a package before since it I formatted it would look like a bunch of fucking changes in git.
Why make things harder? Part of the meeting was how to get code done and PR’ed faster so it gets to the testers. Autoformatting shit would help.6
Ever come back from a small vacation and arrived to see that the rest of the team had butchered your baby and were trying to stitch it back together, but only succeeded in making it worse?
Feels just like that right now. Fucking hell. I gave them a linter, a prettier config file and pre-made shortcuts to run. Still looks like Dr. Frankenstein was drunk while stitching and overvolted the machine, so now the bloody monster is also on fire. This will be a fun week 🙃1
Prettier formatter, AirBnB linter.
Prettier defaults to double quotes for strings. AirBnB loves it some single quotes. Would probably be able to change the configuration in order to maintain sanity *now*, but when I was a newbie dev, I was given a repo with AirBnB linting built in after being recommended Prettier.
It was not fun times.7
So something sparked the thought at work today, so I checked to see if my name was available as a domain. Turns out both .com and .co.za were avalible. So cheap I couldn't resist
Guess my portfolio has a prettier name now2
I actually do have something to rant about!
The people I've decided to work with... are complete and utter fools. They don't want to keep updated with new practices and merely talk about awesome stuff... Let me elaborate.
The first person is someone I spent really many hours just writing with, I've helped him build on his personal project, which has now become our project (which I've done most of the work on now). He keeps writing about things that aren't fucking relevant for the current task - furthermore, he completely refuses to use any type of collaboration software in order to keep an eye on tasks we want to, and already have completed. He likes Git but doesn't provide helpful git messages, sometimes even stuff like 'forgot this'.. never any freaking description of what's actually been done! Not even after agreeing it should be done, he just doesn't understand what a helpful message is apparently.
I might be a bit special regarding wanting to follow practices, but how the fuck do you make any amount of money by being so ignorant!? He was a WP 'developer' a while ago, and has since changed to JS and are using a framework which he doesn't understand - he can't even remember what the documentation states.
So why do I 'work' with him? He knows a lot of phrases he's read in books, blogs, and the likes. That makes him really inspirational and positive and he really wants to become successful(like me!). But over the last few months, I've realized how bad he is at programming - he doesn't know basic programming concepts and have a hard time applying any sort of knowledge to his programming. If it's not pre-built, he can't use it, not even if the documentation has specific examples. He barely grasps the concept of binding data to a variable. He wouldn't know how to access it again though, it's just for the sake of binding it to some existing functionality.
The other guy really likes his old style. He hired me to maintain some application. Which has turned out to be a hell of several small tasks he needs to be finished or reworked - with no clear definition of the task. Most of the time, he'll do some initial changes, show the changes to me, vaguely explain what they do (not what he's trying to achieve) and first THEN ask me to do these changes, most often in some files that don't exist (he uses the wrong filenames so I have to guess/ask where the changes need to be made).
To top it all off, old syntax is used and don't get me started on the spaces+tabs for indenting lines... Because I've already added a great ESLint+Prettier conf and everything should be nicely formatted according to pre-defined rules.
But he won't take the time to install some plugins in his editor and I'm left with sometimes buggy, badly formatted code (the code I have to make changes with!) - that's while he several times have agreed that I can do what I want and that he even questions his own ways when looking at my changes which he calls by-the-book.
So why the motherfucking fuck do I keep working with him?
Well, he keeps paying so that's really nice - I haven't been able to properly execute the bigger tasks(which pays more) though, due to a lack of information or some badly written code I couldn't quite figure out how works (at a glance).
He also keeps talking about these new projects he wants to make.. he even has these freaking papers with descriptions and data-structures and we converse really good about these new awesome projects. He also likes cryptocurrencies(which is an interest of mine he has inflamed quite a bit) and lastly, he seems like a genuinely nice guy who I'd like to spend some time with even besides coding and work.
So now I stand here - stuck with people that make me feel like a demi-god or something because I use a git style-guide and ESLint+Prettier with the Airbnb style-guide.
What should I do? I'd really like some remote work and have a desperate need for money... So much so, that I might even have to pick up a fulltime job, in order to save my sorry ass - all because I like speaking with people who just like the thought of programming...
I'm actually quite lonely with my thoughts and they are the two only people I've had some sort of relationship with - who has an invested interest in programming/dev... I really like that, despite having to follow their thoughts as they surely can't follow mine.
Please be my friend or give me some paid work lol.
Also, I've been moving the last couple weeks - those weeks has been the most stressful of my life and have not contributed to my overall wellbeing and relations with people... It's good to be back at the computer again and be reading some devRant though!1
Yeah, making rockets is hard and all but have you tried correctly integrating eslint-prettier settings with your IDE settings..5
Setting up eslint is driving me nuts.
This shit never works for me.
Every two months:
I read why eslint is important to have in development workflow. I get convinced of it's benefit. I decide to give it few hours to do this correctly this time.
3-4 hours passby, still nothing. I run into problems that only I face. My vscode setup is a complete mess now. My code formatter wants one way if writing code which eslint doesn't like for some reason.
Fuck this shit.
Am I the only one?3
Why the fuck why are tslint and prettier are always sucking their dicks and fuck each others asses.
Do you know this moment when you think:.... 🤔 They have millions of downloads, why do I bother formatting my code so much. Mabye all this people are smarter and saving so much time.
Then you set up eslint and prettier adjusting 10000k rules just to find eslint and prettier five minutes later in one file fucking their asses again how to indent on save😠😱7
Install Linux they said, it's better than a blue screen windows they said, THERE IS NO LINUX DRIVER OR NDISWRAP SUPPORT FOR MY WIFI ADAPTER I'M BASICALLY IN THE SAME BLOODY SPOT BUT WITH A PRETTIER TERMINAL! The reason for getting a blue screen in the first place was a bloody fucked up wifi driver!!!! I both love and hate you guys7
This team mate of mine always finds a way to escape my suggestions in his pull requests.
Today he told me that what I'm asking him is just my personal preference and that it's not a thing just because our formatter isn't powerful enough to do it automatically.3
Know that feeling when you break out of a really deep relationship, end up with someone else who's prettier and better in many ways than your ex yet still, during those intimate moments, you can't help but think about your ex and how good life was with them?
My previous laptop even though it had the same processor, lesser RAM, was less prettier and the SSD being the only upgrade to my new one, somehow worked faster, smoother and felt a lot better. :(
If havent post a rant in a while since i started a new job a month ago. It is a pretty chill company. Not sure if that’s because i’m working remote and almost don’t have communications or…
I have to work on this project. Appearently from 2018. It’s all php and Wordpress here. I don’t have major deal against it but this project..
I have flushed down prettier things then this piece of shit code. My god. And this is live. The horror!
Le dev and le me (continued)
So le manager decides to talk to both le me and le dev so we can sort things out.
Le dev than says: "I think we shouldn't refactor things just to make them prettier." (Very passive-aggressively talking about me.)
Then goes on and implements a custom permission handler that performs several queries to the database to determine if a user should be able to change an object.
And all le me wanted was to use groups...
I need help structuring a new TypeScript project built on a MERN stack. I used CRA for the client, so I opted to have separate tsconfig files -- one for client (auto-generated by CRA) and one for server (extends node12 tsconfig). However, I'm trying to setup eslint and prettier globally so that the lint/style rules are uniform across the codebase. CRA adds an eslint config that extends react-app, which is fine, but I'd like to still have my global rules. I have written my eslintrc.json file and am happy with it, so I placed it in the project root directory. I figured I would install eslint, prettier, etc. in the project root, then when I run eslint globally, it would lint the server code with the global rules and the client code with the global rules and the react-scripts rules.
However, react-scripts complains that I've installed a newer version of eslint in a parent directory. I can either ignore that rule or use the same version as react-scripts, but it seems like react-scripts is going to run eslint on its own when I run npm start, regardless of if I have a global config. What should I do? Is there a better way to structure the app?1
