"I was wondering why Monitors sleep and Keyboards don't.
Then it occurred to me that Keyboards have two SHIFTS. 😆😆" -some guy17 -
Her: Why do you need 3 monitors??
Me: Why do you need 6 bags on the hanger, permanently, and 23 pairs of shoes?
Her: :/18 -
My employer bought some new 40" 4k displays to the office. The want us to evaluate if they are any good, and if so replace all monitors... No real developers has one, only HR people sitting there with one huge window with office or word open!! It makes me cry! And they will most likely say they are too big!
When everyone left the office I tried one... OMG, i need this in my life! 😍50 -
Doing web development on one monitor is a living nightmare.
1-3 windows or panals for coding
1 browser for previewing
1 broswer for google shit lol
multiple file explorers open
multi terminals
I see why 2 or more monitors is basically a necessity.27 -
So when everyone is posting their setup. Here is mine with two 34" monitors (curved) and some LEDs because no lamp did fit on the desk anymore :D
I hope it works now because it didn't upload the image the last two attempts...26 -
when u try to find the error but the screen is too small so u have to scroll a lot more to see other lines20
-
2 monitors on armatures, PC tower, mac mini, gaming mouse with 17 buttons, Bose speakers, UPS, height-adjustable standing desk, and ~2 miles of cables23
-
So everyone is sharing their work again, so here is mine.
And no 6 monitors, 1 pc isn't overkill.
Well...
Maybe...
But just a little!
Usually, one is spotify, one iChrome, one development (center bottom), one execution of dev, one email&facebook split and one documentation.24 -
I see people posting setups so I will share mine. three 27" Asus monitors. left for viewing site, mid for code, right for db :)13
-
"alright, let's go to sleep"
*pulls out extension cord from monitors as I do every night*
*hears server buzzing disappearing*
😓
I entirely forgot that I connected my server which is running heavy and lengthy tasks, to that one, as well.
😧😥😬😰21 -
This month's expenses:
- Computer parts to build a new computer.
- Separate video card.
- Hex monitor stand.
- 6 (second hand) monitors
I'm so sorry for my bank account 😥24 -
Upgrading my current setup. New monitors, setting up a server, creating an "internal' network and so on.
This is fun!20 -
Fuck yeah!
6 monitors are success-fucking-fully running on my setup.
Fun detail is that WITH the official AMD driver, one screen wasn't turning on and one had a weird resolution but WITHOUT it, it works completely fine!
Yes, it runs completely fine on Linux (Kubuntu).
Finally have my dream setup.42 -
Updated my PC this morning, now it thinks I have 7 monitors (I have 3 and only 1 is working now). This is going to be a fun morning...9
-
In the bottom left corner of the picture there is a devRant guy with a 3 monitor setup...
However 2 monitors are the biggest multi monitor setup you can select...
*puts tinfoil hat on*
Have I just leaked the next big devRant update?53 -

New setup is nearly finished 😍
Six active monitors right now ran by one laptop (three monitors including the laptop screen), one computer (also used as a server, two monitors) and one real rack server (one monitor).
Also bought a new switch and getting led strips tomorrow.
I already am in love with this baby 😍❤30 -
I think I’m a bit unusual in that my favorite place to code is on the couch, just using my laptop. During the work day I use two monitors, but I find it more comfortable to just use a lap desk and laptop when I get home/on weekends. I’m not sure if it’s from laziness or whatever, but it seems to work.7
-
I just started re-doing my entire setup because I finally want to build my true dream setup 😍
Gonna pick up two monitors with monitor arms tomorrow and searching for a network switch as we speak.
Any tips?36 -
5 screens... 3 monitors, main screen, app connecting my iPad Pro screen. now I can be productive and distracted without having to change tabs...15

So I went for a movie last night in one the biggest malls in my city and this is what I found.
This is the pic of one of those touch screen monitors they have for information..
Come on guys.9 -
Stepmom told me I take up the most bandwidth in the house because I have 3 monitors. ATT guy said the problem was I forwarded a Minecraft port on our router. Am I the only person who knows anything about routers?!4
-
Christmas came early for my coworker. He wanted 6 monitors, IT is giving him three Samsungs in portrait.4
-
Got my VisionTek Radeon 7750 today! Held my breath during the amd drivers installation on Linux (KDE Neon) but it all went well.
Rebooted, all screens (4 right now? upgrading to 6 soon) black.
Closed eyes, opened after 10 seconds and BAM, first display is working.
After some settings tweaking I've got 4 monitors up and running now, waiting for new hardware for two more.
Also waiting for a hex monitor stand ❤.
AMD, thanks for providing stable and working drivers for Linux for free!11 -
Got myself a pair of lovely curved monitors lately... Let's see if they help with finishing my bachelor's thesis. Wish me luck! =)11
-
My setup at work as a juniour dev. Got a month ago a 3rd monitor (the left), because I'm working on some backend services and had to test them with a touchscreen. Now only the frontend dev and I have 3 monitors in the whole company 😁6
-
The Micromanagement God. The guy would come to the office 64 times a day, go behind my desk, stare at the monitors for a while and ask what am I working on.
He would sometimes ask for explanation of how something works because he never saw it before and then give me advice on how to use that thing he never saw before.2 -
My employer wants our development team to change to laptops instead of the setup we have .. which is a PC with two monitors16
-
So 10 months ago i moved from Cambridge (UK) to Guildford (UK), due to moving this distance i started working from home and going into the office once a week.
Now after 10 months i have finally got my home office how i first imagined it. Everything runs from my laptop which is located on the shelving unit away from my desk. Everything plugs into it via 1 USB lead.
Setup:
27" 2560 x 1440 monitor flanked by two 1280 x 1024 monitors.
Asus Laptop (i5-6300HQ, 12GB ram, 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD)
Home PC (i5-7600, 8GB ram, GTX 770)
Accessories:
StarTech USB hub - This allows me to plug my three monitors, keyboards, mouse and everything else into my laptop.
KVM switch - Allows me to swap between my Work PC and Home PC with a click of a button14 -
My workstation at incubation center, where i am currently incubated.
Finally got multi-screen desktop. Though monitors are prone to theft by other teams
bNEST, Bhopal
PS - Laptop is for gaming7 -
Just gotta love random hibernation wake ups, went sleep on time in like a year, fell asleep quick and then my fucking 3 monitors turn on and the fucking pc woke up, for no fucking reason, blasting equal of 4 suns into my eyes.9
-
I've uncovered the complot.
I clearly remember buying my first monitor, it was 15 inch, 1024x768. Then I went to a 19 inch 1680x1050 one, then 24 inch 1080p, then 27 inch 1440p...
Now I used two 32 inch 4K screens at work... and I come home, and the three 27 inch screens look a bit smallish, with the old 24 inch one being absolutely tiny on my desk.
It wasn't that tiny when I still owned the 15 inch screen? And my 5.5 inch phone doesn't feel as big as when I bought it either?
So the complot... All monitors slowly shrink over time, and they start shrinking faster when new monitors are brought into the household.6 -
You know that feeling when you rotate one of your monitors from landscape to portrait and can see all the code at once...8
-
That first world problems moment when your desk can hardly handle handle the load of your monitor arm after you've put up a new monitor and you realize that three more monitors will be mounted soon.
😬😧😅20 -
All my 'real life' friends like:
- Why do you need two monitors?
- Why does your keyboard has keys that do nothing when pressed?
- You have a controller on pc?
- Hehehe. I found a funny meme on 9gag -.-9 -
Dual 27" Dell 4K HDR monitors, plus a Samsung 1080p and the retina display. My poor 2015 MacBook Pro with a Radeon R9 M370X 2GB can barely handle it. But there's just so much resolution that it's totally worth it!9
-
New setup :
HP omen 870-173
Intel i7-6700
GeForce gtx 1070
16GB
2x HP 24" display monitors
That's pretty good12 -

Yesterday was my first day at my first internship as a naive rising uni soph. I brought my tiny 13 inch thinkpad thinking I was gonna code on that. Imagine my surprise as I walk in and HR brings me to a table with 4 monitors on it. l o l
I like it there.3 -
Bought a 27" 1080p monitor and decided to use my old monitor besides it in portrait mode. This feels so good, portrait monitor's good for reading tutorials or for writing code. My coolest setup so far!6

After 8 hours of focusing on two monitors at work, I go home so I can focus on my own two monitors.3
-
Started testing out the concept of a new application I'm developing (nothing special)
I always seem to play games instead of coding, so I'm developing a trainer which monitors for any open games and checks whether I have coded enough in a day to play games.
If I haven't coded for long enough, it will force close the game and warn me.
Further development to happen.27 -
Thought of buying an HTC Vive then I realized I would need to add a few things to my shopping list:
- 16 GB Ram cards
- Windows 10
- 2 TB Hard drive
- NVIDIA Graphics Card
- HDMI Display Port/Controller
- 2 monitors
My parents ended up getting me a Google Cardboard6 -
Leave work with two working monitors at my desk, come back the next day to one monitor and a missing HDMI cable. Find out marketing took it for a presentation, don't get it back for three weeks. Finally get it back for a day, become super happy to finally have both monitors again. Come back the next day and PM has stolen my HDMI again, no extra HDMI cables in entire office. Apparently HDMI cables are valued like gold around these parts.10

People points at something on my monitor: My nuts climb the tree to hide
People points at something on my monitOR BY FUCKING TOUCHING IT: My day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable. And fuck you.
Official statistics say that people who touches a monitors screen while im nearby, lives significantly shorter time than people who dont.16 -
Why the FUCK do people keep turning up the brightness on the monitors? Every single time I'm in programming class, some complete fucking idiot set the brightness blindingly high! I want to keep my eyes for a while, anything other than 0 just makes my eyes hurt on this monitor!12
-
I've just realised the dual monitor computer option (for Dev Avatar) has no computer, it's just two monitors.7
-
My work laptop (windows) updated yesterday. Today my monitors keep flickering, hanging, and going black for a few seconds then come back with an error that my display drivers crashed. Since I have basically zero access to anything admin on this machine, I put in a help desk ticket with all the details, the error message, even screen shots which took forever to get because of all the crashes.
They finally respond after about an hour, and tell me that my computer does not support 3 screens so I will have to use 2, and that is what is causing the crash. Well I have been using 3 screens with this computer since I started there in 2014, and it has worked perfectly until the update, so I asked if they could revert the update.
He told me that they could not revert it, and not only that, but I couldn't have been using 3 monitors before because the computer doesn't support it and never has. REALLY??? I just freaking told you I have been doing that for over 3 years so obviously it does support it you deaf, stupid retard. Try using your brain for 2 seconds and work on a solution instead of calling me a liar and dismissing my issue without thought.
After going back and forth for about 5 minutes I gave up and hung up. Finally I fixed it by switching out my docking station with another one I found laying around. Not sure why that worked, but I'm back to working on all 3 monitors. I called the guy back to tell him it's working and sent a picture of my setup, his response: "Well I don't know why that works because your laptop is too old to support that."
Useless...3 -
After I showed my private desk last already, here still my place at work. Meanwhile I don't even know how to program productively with less than three monitors under Windows.
But now you know one of our wonderful corporate wallpapers. And yes, my desktop is always so empty, that's no fake.4 -
I've got to say, arriving at my teeny tiny rented room after a long day of distribution center work and sitting down behind my monitors with a good beer and doing some programming/server stuff really feels like coming home 😍.2
-
I want my dual-monitors :c Seems like I need to double my amount of upvotes then. But I want to match my avatar to my real setup! :c1
-
FUCK YOU EXCEL!
Multiple monitors to show multiple sheets at once?
Excel: Not allowed.
FUCK YOU

Excel: Not allowed, I will only show you one at a time.
FUCK YOU
Multiple Desktops to have multiple setups to easily switch between?
Excel: Not allowed, I'll show you the same spreadsheet on all desktops!
FUCK YOU
FUCK FUCK FUCK18 -
So I persuaded my boss to buy me 2 extra wide monitors (2560x1080).
They're way to big and my neck hurts. After few months, I stopped using edges, and keep all my editors and browsers in the center of my viewpoint, leaving edges empty.
My desk is also too small, and I don't have space for anything else other than monitors.
We programmers have it rough :(6 -

Vertical monitors people... Just tried it for the first time a few days ago; let's say that there's no going back. Why didn't anyone tell me about this before?11 -
Windows 10 as a development environment... Oh freakin' goody.
📍Multi-montor is finicky
📍Text scaling is still horribly broken
📍It takes longer to resume from standby than my old laptop takes to boot up from a cold start
📍Color matching LCD monitors is pants-on-head retarded
📍32GB of RAM isn't going to be enough...
This is going to be a long summer in corporate land.20 -
Me: "hey CEO, that product that's only had 3 devs on for a couple of years has grossed a million brit bucks 2 years running. Any chance we could get some laptops for the team that aren't heavy as fuck and 4-5 years old. Maybe some monitors that aren't tiny and dull as fuck?"
CEO: "no"
Also, what's people's dream dev gear?9 -
Everytime someone launches a VR headset, people are talking about being able to watch movies in their "personal theater" and I'm here hoping there will be a desktop mirroring or something like a vnc client compatible with the headset so that I can have *infinite* monitors and code more efficiently. I might look stupid swiveling on a chair wearing a headset but hey.. I'll enjoy it!
Imagine.. 32 monitors, a nice piece of noise-cancelling headphones, a swivel chair with keyboard attached ergonomically, backrest bent to near 40degrees..17 -
Dear management,
I require one vertical monitor for my JS, one vertical monitor for my HTML, one vertical monitor for my CSS, and two stacked ultrawide monitors for testing in browser.
Thanks,
Many loves,
Algo.12 -
First time having 2 monitors and actual full size desk inside my own apartment. Very liberating and I should take advantage... nothing beats the privacy of your home where you can think uninterrupted!4
-
Decided to upgrade my hardware a day after wk119 ends. Oof. I'll post an update once the first part (monitors) arrives, but here's a before pic in the meantime.
Monitors: 3 different brands at 3 different sizes/resolutions. Left to right: 1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1440x900.
Mic: Neewer NW-800 with a U-PHORIA UMC22 interface.
Keyboard: A DIY Nyquist kit from keeb.io with Canvas XDA keycaps.
Rubber duck: I prefer a fuzzy kitten.3 -
Three differently sized monitors freakes me out, but apparently that doesn't motivate buying new monitors at work 🙃😔4
-
My desk monkey. He serves the purpose of both keeping the monitors dust free and receiving verbal abuse when things go wrong . . .1
-
Thanks to DevRant, you have saved hundreds of monitors from getting smashed, keyboards from getting torn into pieces and mouses being flung across the rooms! There is a platform for rants now!3

/* rant */
I freaking hate it when people call me to fix their 9 gazillion dollar ultra extreme enthusiast alien technology pc just so they can play a a god damn freaking son of a damn bloody bitchy fb game on 9000 fps in 4k while some people struggle to have 6 tabs open at the same time so they can code+compile+preview+consult the interwebs. And lets just not mention the amount of monitors mmkay?5 -
Our university labs still use computers with 512mb ram, celeron processor for programming and networking courses. Even worse some of the mouse/keyboards/monitors not working and we occasionally have to do exam on those machines ...5
-
The Penguin's den 😅
(that is after cleaning up BTW)
Monitors are a full HD TV and a 12 years old 5:4 for legacy stuff.5 -
I researched a bunch of really beefy computer parts yesterday and the total for the PC came out to be just $2,500 INCLUDING $500 in monitors (HD 144HZ 27')
I genuinely thought this build would be upwards of $4,000
Time to max out the old credit card11 -
Today I decided it was a good time to give back to the developers of this awesome platform. I bought some 'Shiny new avatar items' and subbed to the Supporters thing. The community is just great. Keep up the great work guys.
Also, Would it be possible to move the phone a few pixels further away from the monitors? Looks a little bit weird atm.6 -
Better late than never. 3 monitors for my pc, 1 for the Mac mini.
@localhost I finally cleaned up the empty beer bottles and soda cans, so... lol8 -
what do you think of my setup?
/* picture of desk with 200 monitors, 7 keyboards, a flying mouse, a rasbperry pi with a human head, and a desk lamp */5 -
Devs: Can we please get adequate hardware to do our job correctly? Please, just a new set of larger monitors.
Lower management: Sure, this is going to be easy.
Upper management: Wait what? This will cost us around 500€ times 10? Any maybe in the end other departments will want that to, so make it times 100.
We're a 4+ billion company ... but yes, please, I love scroll bars and they make my work so much faster.4 -
Am I the only one who thinks monitors turned to portrait looks dumb and can’t possibly be more useful? The number one reason people give when I ask is that they can fit more code on the screen. I don’t know about you but I don’t have the ability to glance at an entire screen of code in portrait or landscape and understand it immediately.6
-
All I want is a another DVI cable so I can connect my secondary monitor digitally instead of by VGA. From their reaction, you could think I had instead asked for a gold-plated desk. Was it really nescessary to have three guys check (non-technical people, too) if *they* could see a difference between my monitors? My primary one is DVI, and *I* can see that the monitor connected by VGA is blurrier. Who connects a flat panel monitor by VGA anyway? Just the idea of an unnescessary pair of analogue-to-digital/digital-to-analogue conveters in the middle of what should be a straight digital connection should be an affront to any sensible technical person. So of course, no extra DVI cable for me.
Call me stupid, but I think it has probably cost the company more money from lost productivity having three people look at my monitors instead of just buying me another DVI cable like I asked for nicely.4 -
It takes 2 hands to count the number of times everyday that I lose my mouse curse due to have too many monitors.4
-
In case you and your friend are bored,
Here's how to have fun :
0)Have Linux installed
1)Grab as many monitors as possible me( and my friends connected 4)
2)Open a shell
3)Drag it all the way across all your screens width (basically open a terminal of width 4 screens in my case)
4)Run "sl"
Profit.
I can't really show how it looked like because it's a long video and can't attach here
Do try it out though.9 -
I don't know if it's the craziest, but once we had an issue with a new release that caused a few forms inside the application to launch with a different scale, resulting very small on 4K monitors.
It turned out the issues were caused by importing "System.Windows" in a new module.2 -
Every time I get a new screen, it's good for about a few days before I realise I need another one.
How many monitors is too many?
Pic related (Dream setup?)8 -
Working at my company for one year with two old 20 inch monitors. My boss asked my what would improve my productivity. I said give me two fucking huge and nice monitors. I got the approval that he ordered for all of us new monitors.
One of the support guys told me the we will get the monitors today. Yeah but that was two weeks ago..
Now all of us are only taking about new monitors.. kinda funny that you can get excited for hardware so easy. Love the IT <31 -
Great
Updated GPU drivers, turned my PC off while i was getting something to eat and watch YouTube videos in the living room, decided to go work on some project, turn my PC back on, and... Nothing works...
Neither of my monitors displays anything and not even my keyboard turns on... Didn't even get to see the splash screen of my mobo vendor
Why does this shit always happen to me?7 -
Here with my books just bought these new 8 monitors just to use them for my marketing analytics work, but do you know what i love more than these books and 8 monitors that i just bought for my marketing analytics work? My brand new lamborghini6
-
It was so frustrating setting this one up. Lots of shouting in front of my monitors. But I think now I'm slowly getting somewhere with my first i3 setup.
Now to see if it will actually improve my workflow somehow.8 -
My main rig has 8 monitors connected to it.
Do not ask why.
Whatever I do, whenever I go I pray there's a dark theme.10 -
One of the few good things dell ever made are it's monitors.
They must be good. People never fucking throw them away. Back when I did repairs I came across *so* many customers who just stocked monitors away like squirrels preparing for the god damn ice age. Three dell monitors here. Five there. Every where a monitor. Old McDonald had dell farm, E, I, E, I, O.6 -
Got a second 1080p monitor for Xmas ans it gave me an excuse to clean my desk off ;)
I included the obligatory 'screenfetch' window as well, haha.
Now to see if I can hack together something resembling a KVM switch from parts I have, to use the Mac mini on one of them (when it's needed on rare occasion, lol).
P.s. I'm sure many of you have more bad ass setups, I even used to have quads myself... But I'm not posting this to start some pissing contest! It's just mine and I'm proud of it :P
Happy new year everyone!!!!6 -
0: Monitors and Graphic's Cards become affordable for us poor graduates
1: Node bloat becomes a thing of the past with WA or has auto-minimize functionality to keep only essential code
2: North American internet companies all go out of business due to free super high speed infrastructure maintained by a trust of communities and elected delegates
not all "dev" related per se, but my current day to day gripes answered6 -

Who makes monitors which can only change the input if there is a signal on the currently selected input?
Monitor on -> VGA -> No signal -> Going to sleep
Like, let me change it to something which has a signal instead of directly going to sleep again?9 -
Here's a followup to my previous desk photo; this is my desk at work. Portrait monitors and Sci-Fi posters FTW!7
-
@localhost My setup! The laptop is on private WiFi that is unmonitored. There's a desktop tower behind the monitors that is wired into the unmonitored network as a server running Linux. it's decent but could be better. and I need more stickers1
-
I really like having my desk in the corner of the office. Then I can block the entrace with my umbrella while drying it. Combine that with headphones and monitors blocking direct sight of me. So I have the ultimate do not disturb office space for efficient programming!5
-
*some* devs with their multiple monitors are like my 3 flatmates with their multiple shower products.5
-
I hate when people ask you to find their deleted files. Fucking people! It is like asking an architech to recover something from their trash bin. People are idiots that don't want to learn. Some people think that they know a lot of computing and barely can power on they monitors. At this level of average stupidity, people should get licenses to use computers.7
-
Budget setup! Third monitor on the left is waiting for a cable. The bigger monitor is a 27'' that i got for 15€, the vertical one I got for free. Mini itx ryzen setup behind the monitors. Chinese mechanical keyboard with outemu blue switches4
-
I had to bite my tongue today when the MD and my colleague started to have a conversation about remote working "not working". It doesn't ******* work if you sit at your mom's kitchen table, cramped around "the team" while all using laptops without additional monitors.... yeah sure, my 3 monitors, large desk, peace and quiet and the ability to go to the bathroom without a security card "doesn't work" and is such a bad environment to get stuff done. ARGGGGG2
-
Fuck graphics cards for only providing 1 hdmi port and then 200 displayport connections. Like every of my monitors have one. Smh2
-
Amazon be like: "Yo dwag, your monitors just got shipped. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BUYING SOME MONITORS!?"3
-
I love the mix of people’s setups. There are those with actual monitors set up in a nice curved way, and then there are people with like 10 random laptops set up on their desks like they hoard electronics3
-
Poor Mr. Squishy working as a window stopper, since some clever folks at the property management department, after months of nagging to get blinds so that the light reflected doesn’t interfere with my (light in general, not direct sunlight).
They installed the blinds in front of the window, so it can only be opened a few centimetres… Well done! Well done! I have to choose, either slightly warmer air than I prefer, or bothersome light reflection in all of my monitors.17 -
Anybody know any good Linux software to remember window position depending on screen configuration? Ideally I'd like there to always be two terminals on one of my monitors automatically, so if there's only one open it should open another one. Yeah, crazy requirements, sorry!7
-
I now have 4 monitors at my workstation and all it has done is convince me that any amount over 3 is just unnecessary.2
-
Had suggested using Workstations and external monitors for the workforce to improve the overall productivity.
Fell on Deaf Ears...
Now, almost a year later, suggestions come from the top level asking for the same !
😒2 -
When your boss buys you two monitors so that you can have your code on one screen and the development site on the other but you're still unable to double productivity 🤔2
-
BOOOOOYS
I just figured out after a year of owning the machine why the monitors felt like they were running a bit sluggish in Windows. They were!!
Even though they are 144hz monitors Windows locked them down to 60hz! Fuck, that's so dumb!
Linux didn't do that. Fuck, that's so dumb!8 -
Late night after everyone has slept, switching on all the 3 monitors, reclining on a comfortable chair, fetching some snacks and coffee by the table gives me the perfect mood to code!
There is silence all around 😌2 -
Me: (Talking to new recruits) "Remember, you should only ever work on one project at a time. The different requirements, complications, and resolution times will fuck you over. That's the last thing you need, being new to the team and all that. If the client needs more man power, then-" (you get the idea)
Also me: 3 monitors and working on 4 projects. *Sips coke*1 -
You COULD buy the entry-level Mac Pro for $7000
or get this build for $4000 that's a fuckton more powerful AND has 2 monitors (with stands!) and just stick Hackintosh on it.
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/...27 -
The monitors came in today. 2x 24" Dell P2419HC monitors. Picked up keyboard from Best buy this morning. Let's get this set up going.
Oh and if you care to know, the laptop on the floor is HP Pavilion running Elementary OS with a 128gb SSD. It runs really well but battery life is a misery. I've had it for over 8years and I still use it. Love it!! 😍7 -
I'm a terminal-guy. I prefer to live inside my terminal. When my family sees me with the green-on-black, they think I'm up to some nasty stuff like hacking / cracking emails, facebook, bank accounts, etc. Only people who understand to look at the terminal realize it's just a few monitors and log tails running. Sometimes, maybe elinks or vi running as well.7
-
If I was to have a multiple monitor setup, I would definitely need to have the same type and size of monitors. I don't know how you guys without identical monitors do it.2
-
If you expect someone to help you with your errors/bugs, at least get some proper logs and explain what you tried that didn't work. Don't just spam them with pictures of errors or "something is wrong. Please fix".
I've seen people taking pics of their monitors. Half the code is eligible due to the glare -_-. At least take the effort of posting your code somewhere and sharing a link. GitHub would be the best go IMO3 -
What aren't there any 2k 32 inch 144 Hz monitors out there that are: flat. I want to upgrade my home setup from a 24" setup, which is, you know, flat. Even back in the days of the CRT monstrosities I've spent a premium on getting a flat panel, as the outside curvature was a technical obstacle to overcome.
I don't understand the need to curve the display. It distorts the lines, hinders other people looking at your screen as you have to be in the right spot, and every camera records on a flat surface. Why should it be a good thing to go curved?
I am reminded of the 3D craze.1 -
When duel 24' monitors is not enough...
How does 3 work for you guys? Does your neck hurts moving around?
I had 5 at work but was mostly on 2 since other 3 for monitoring.10 -
@dfox, @trogue I think with the birds, tigers, glass tables, monitors, and other toys in the avatars now. It's time for a new cartoon of the chaos and destruction that ensues when the pets fight!
Who's with me?2 -
Why does almost everyone posting their setup have just HTML on their monitors. Is that all we have here :P?4
-
To you who enjoyed the Gif/Jiff, Sequel/EsQueEll, Git/Jeet grandiose debates, comes the new phonetic conundrum: DevREnt vs. DevRUnt. Soon, in monitors near you.6
-
I bought a Macbook about 6 month ago and I became in love with development in it... I've got a fucking MSI dream PC sitting here with two monitors acting as a glorified paperweight...
Its so weird because I know I could just put some Linux distro and use it more often but its almost like so many years of Windows make you doubt that you can ever fully leave the ecosystem... Its like some sort of sick Stockholm syndrome.5 -
Few weeks back, I have subscribed /r/battlestations and drooling everyday. Now with this latest devRant news, it's time to save money or sell my ass on street to
1) buy a wide monitor or monitors
2) buy backlit keyboard and mouse
3) buy a good desk
4) buy a good chair
5) buy/rent a room with enough space
Forget about buying and setting up a good unit, I can just use my potato laptop for one photo taking. *dry-laugh*
(∩︵∩)2 -
So I get to work this morning and find one of my monitors has been moved and my HDMI cable and Display Port adapter are missing...
I've since found the cable, it had made its way onto another desk. When I asked if anyone had seen anything one of the guys said he found an HDMI that's not his on his desk. Still no sign of my adapter though...
So for now I'm back to one monitor like some kind of peasant1 -
Moving flats in about an hour, wrapped my desktop in multiple blankets and bubble wrap, and that times ten for my monitors, I'm fearing for my life here guys4
-
I was wondering why monitors sleep and keyboards don't. Then I realised that the keyboard has two SHIFTS.1

I've been trying to query some data from an 18 GB xml DB through BaseX for about 9 hours without success.
Just wondered how LinQ would work with the same xml info. Just got the info I needed in less than 15 minutes.
God bless LinQ.5 -
Interesting.. When I'm on sugar rush, my phone screen starts flickering. But just to me - noone else. Could be high blood sugar increases eyes' photosensors' refresh rate.
Could explain why lots of devs are troubled by 60hz monitors while others aren't9 -
Remember how I made script to change brightness with keyboard shortcuts? https://devrant.com/rants/1845183/...
Well, after 2 days of complaining why the fuck this shit does not work anymore, I figured out I deleted it...also from trash.... OH, FUCK!!!3 -
Why can't people pick up on the subtle cues that you are busy? If I am intently looking at my monitors then I am fucking busy! This is not the time to engage in a personal convo. Then do not slack me after that! I wish slack had an icon that conveyed 'under a deadline unless the building is on fire do not disturb'2
-
1. start up my monitors, have one monitor streaming news while the other one is browsing devRant.
2. drink an ungodly amount of caffeine
3. crash so hard that I have an excuse not to code and go back to bed. -
Yo the developers I see on Instagram are doing 100days of code with 3/4 monitors along with a laptop and tablet side by side. rich af lol. seems like a show off but idk.may be im saying that cause i can't currently afford it lol.13
-
Dear everyone,
Stop turning off the monitors. That doesn't sign you out or turn off the computer, it just makes the next person wonder what's taking so long.1 -
My dream project is to build my own analytics system and project on monitors which basically says everything live users on site, what every user is doing... where my site is failing etc...
Fortunately I'm solely working on it and implementing in the company I work. So, in couple of months it is going to be realistic.
#awesome #analytics2 -
I have begun to prefer a single monitor over multiple ones. Currently I have my laptop and a 1080 23" at home. I have been getting used to just the 23" with the laptop closed. With multiple workspaces/desktops I find it quicker to just use my keyboard to switch over to look at something and switch back.
Which leads me to consider a single ultrawide monitor for my next upgrade. Thanks for reading.3 -
TIL: new M2 MacBooks officially support only single external screen. Not even the Pro class supports dual. It supports single 6K monitor, but I've failed to find any userfriendly ways to get good tiling which would be equivalent to multi-monitor. The only native tilling is left/right split. TB3 can handle 3x2K or 2x4K, but Apple said "fuck you and your multi-monitor setup".
I ain't mad tho. The guy upgrading to M2 sold me his dual monitors for a really good price.9 -
couldnt work out today why some jquery wasn't stopping an elements width overflowing its container.
in the end after 1 and a half hours of wanting to bash my head in, I had the window expanded across both monitors and hadn't noticed the edge of the window was off the screen.
FML! -
Yet another bragging right photo from a friend but honestly it looks like a clumsy setup IMO. Like why would you fix the monitors horizontally. Why?12
-
Are there any others that watch TV shows while working/coding (while still being productive)? I just finished watching The Office on one of my monitors and have finished all my tasks before any deadlines2

PC desktop at work is failing, so i had to take my personal laptop last week. Almost lost a working day because of that ..
Took the desktop home to try and repair it on the free day, but for now i can't even plug it on one of my different home monitors ..
Gonna be fun !7 -
I am working more effectively nowadays from home rather than from office.
At office, I end up spending most time in eating, playing table tennis and meetings.
The only thing I am missing at my house is my 2 big 27" 4k office monitors. -
So my desktop just crapped itself big time... 😧
It has been having trouble booting for the past few weeks, going into a rave flashing all the monitors, but usually recovering after a couple of minutes.
Today a got even more rave and after 10 minutes and a forced reboot, all I get now is a cursor... 😢
Guess it's time to reinstall Windows, hopefully that will fix the missing icons and thumbnails too 😅1 -
One of the things that fascinates me about software engineering, is how there is no metric to determine who is the best software engineer.
The guy who worked at FAANG?
The guy who started his own company and created their own product?
The guy who owns a RGB and two monitors setup?11 -
So I felt like I had to give anotherone of these updates.
When I arrive at work all I do is connect my ThinkPad to my dock, and both monitors, keyboard and mouse goes live. Got a Hyper X Alloy and Corsair Harpoon just the other week, so no more bringing and ruining my own stuff. Just being able to "be live" in 1 minute is wonderful.12 -
I usually use external monitors. After I disconnect all monitors, why do some applications pretend it's monitor is still connected and appear outside the main screen?3
-
Should I spend my money on a monitor? Sitting 30cm from a TV for so long isn't healthy, but monitors are soooooooo expensive?
I don't want to use my secondary monitor as primary because it's relatively small. What do we think?6 -
People posting their (not so good) workstation. Post it if you code on 3 widescreens, 9 monitors, a gaming rig or if your debug duck is a ducking (pun (maybe)) dragon.
A laptop on a 10 inch table is pretty sad.2 -
Thank to ddcutil, now I don't have to rape my monitors buttons every time I need to change brightness. Nice!5
-
Here’s my setup, a little late. I use the dual monitors with my work computer and laptop + monitor for personal computer.1
-
The moment when you wake up next morning, turn on your monitors and realize that the heavily needed update you wanted to install overnight didn't even start....1
-
My in-house "office". A normal room, but with 2 desks. One for my monitors + laptop and the other one for other electronic stuff. It's a very quiet room :)
-
Anyone with 2 monitors (or more) with laptop as the primary source. How did you connect everything together? Also, I use Linux (Antergos)
I bought 2 monitors. I was able to connect one of them to my laptop with HDMI. Now, my laptop only has one HDMI and no VGA. So I can't really figure how to use 2 monitors with my laptop (also extending it and not duplicating screens).
I've come across HDMI splitter. But I don't if it allows extending screens8 -
I have a colleague who has 2 monitors at work. But only uses one, other is switched off
Tried convincing. Did not work. He just prefers one. I just do not understand.
Anyone else prefer just one monitor and alt + tabs? O.o8 -
One of my coworkers uses two monitors (as well as all the other devs), but one of them is always displaying the desktop, with a big gospel wallpaper.1

Just got my new monitors. 2x 28” 4K monitors... didn’t realise they were this big, so now I gotta get a new desk, but that’s fine, I just bought an apartment with a spare room I can make into an office (as soon as the current tenant moves out)
I live in a co-share apartment, and the owner wanted to sell it, so I bought it.5 -
Procrastinating because I have no manager/colleagues looking at my monitors…

Fitting all of my open apps onto three monitors. I think maybe six monitors will hold them all. Ironically, staying focused is also something I struggle with. 🤦♂️😅

I had several laptops to work with but I have never felt so good since I bought a macbook.
I must admit my oldest ones didn't have an SSD, so maybe that's what is making the difference.
So, what's your setup? Are you an Apple fan? Do you think there are better options and alternatives? How many monitors do you work with?
Share your experience.17 -
Guys how many monitors use at office? I work with 3 and i would like 4th but my desk isnt enough big for it :( Also i prefer more full hd monitors than big resolution ultrawides11
-
These new pet options are nice and all. But why so unrealistic? I mean there is no way to put the cat on the keyboard. Nor an option for CRT monitors with cat on top. I am horrified by the lack of sense and mostly dissapointed. 5/7 would still choose a ground cat though.4
-
In the past couple weeks I've switched from openbox to bspwm, and I am in love. The tiling is whatever, but I love the granular control bspwm offers for monitors, desktops, and nodes(windows). I love running extremely customizable apps like sxhkd, polybar, and picom to make it my own. Anybody else around here using bspwm?3
-
Older lady designer with 2 huge Apple monitors asking me to change a color on the UI or left shift list elements. That's not too bad, right. NOOOOO. All of those request asked individually in a timespan of 4 weeks. I was assigned to do just that and nothing else. Damn I was bored...I was not allowed to help other teams or even my own team members officially. Finally my boss called me up for another project. SALVATION !!!
PS. That project got cancelled. No suprise there. -
People that aren't into IT and act as if they are the best technicians in the world... People that tries to set the same windows resolution on two different monitors...
-
I only use a 1 monitor setup. I just use multiple virtual desktops, it's easier for me to switch desktops with the trackpad then move my head to look at multiple monitors. Surely that's more efficient right?13
-
New colleague;
This guy; smacks on his desk to make things work. I sit across him, facing. Fidgets with his body on the transmitting wooden floor, my monitors are twitching, and my chair feels like I am riding the back of a horse, or sitting on a washing machine 🥲. Damn it 🥲5 -
Just thinking, there must be a shitload of CRT monitors in landfill. Can you even recycle those heavy bastards?
-
why don't monitors have physical fucking brightness buttons?!
I had to navigate through menus of 4 different monitors, just to adjust them to #mondaysucks
and I had to do it the same time, so they would all match brightness
tomorrow I have to do it again, I guess I'll block off a few hours on my calendar for it :D3 -
I bought a Samsung 34” ultra wide monitor for the express purpose of being able to arrange multiple windows however I deemed necessary for productivity. Only to find out that it natively only offers a single vertical split. The software they provide to offer more split options simply does not work the way it says it will. And DisplayFusion software is no better.
Is it seriously 2018 and we still don’t have a simple way to make the most of a widescreen monitor? Good grief!!!!!8 -
University labs. I’ve been lucky enough to have 2 brand new computing labs constructed during my time here. Ultra wide QHD USB-C monitors 😍

What earphones (in ear monitors) would you guys suggest? Looking for one within 50$ or ₹3000.
I work in an open office and the lack of noise isolation is killing me11 -
I have been thinking of buying some monitors recently, but I've never bought a monitor before so I dont really know what im looking for. What sorts of monitors would be classed as good?5

Nvidia's drivers for Linux are absolute dog shit. Like how difficult is it to make something functional? I only have 2 monitors connected but the second one is causing the driver to crash, wtf.8

To all the people using 1080p external monitors on macos mojave, did you notice that the fonts are now shitty?
I wrote a script to fix it. (Uses the fix provided in the forums and makes it work for ext displays and retina).

Are there some good external portable macbook pro monitors that have the vertical/portrait functionality? Also, it should be rechargeable and should not get power from my laptop when there's still a charge. (I use MBP 15" 2018 model)
We are agile at work (all use laptops, no permanent seats) and I need an extra portale monitor because there are no provided external monitors to use.
I was thinking of buying and iPad pro as a portable external monitor via catalina sidecar but it is laggy somehow and very expensive. Thanks! 🙂18 -
Anyone know any good sources on creating a multi seat system using Ubuntu (or some Linux). I want to have 4 people using 4 monitors, keyboards, and mice. On 1 computer. It’s for a project idea9
-
I'm pissed at my laptop. Its using the on board graphics instead of the dedicated graphics card. I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution. I've tried just disabling the on board graphics in the device manager, but then I can't plugin external monitors. And on top of that when opening a game it doesn't even use the GPU it uses the CPU
Anyone have advice? The onboard is AMD Radeon R7 and the card is an AMD RX 560 -
I know it doesn't really apply because we have widescreen monitors now, but regardless, I hate seeing code that runs the width of the screen, I'd much rather have more lines than more columns. Viva la vertical!5
-
Relationship goals:
Get my linux box to show different tty's on different monitors. (Or maybe just tmux? Split?)
Regardless, I think I'll marry her. -
Badly designed monitors, pager duty, 4 in the morning. 20 minutes of figuring out if anything means anything. I just want to sleep. 😭😪

Smart glasses. There is one kind of them, which is pretty much my childhood dream to have. A kind if glasses that I can use to display contents as I do today with my multiple monitors. Is there something like that on the market? Must work with a laptop, not a phone.
Merry Christmas or holidays or whatever's you're celebrating today for everyone here btw.1 -

needed testing with 3 acccounts.
as a dev, I managed to do this with two screens, juggling here and there.
The QA guy, just installed 3 monitors.

I'm working on a project which monitors streaming videos from several Rasp Pi devices wirelessly. Should packet loss occur, the bitrate is reduced remotely by the central computer. (Packet loss is inevitable as wireless devices will compete for wireless bandwidth.)
To demonstrate my work I asked for a wireless WI-FI router rather than bringing one in from home. I wish I hadn't bothered... -
WhatsApp Messenger is not working today here in Mexico. I wonder how'severything going on over there 😂😂😂 it brings to mind once when I first released to production some dlls I modified. The bank core didn't work 10 minutes5

Anyone got recommendations on a monitor setup above 1080p and 24" for developing in a unix environment? Don't know if I should go vertical, dual, or widescreen. I've seen research that dual monitors creates distraction. Thoughts?2
-
Not too long ago I bought 3 monitors. Now I have my IDE on the center, console and debugger (and devrant) on the left, git and music on the right. Still figuring out the best arrangement for all windows but this already feels awesome!3

sitting at work for two hours with coffee and dual monitors making no progress whatsoever.
*30 minutes at home, in bed, before going to sleep, with laptop on knees* well that was easy... -
People usually use their phones in portrait mode. People often taking vertical photos and videos. People read books, and every book has portrait pages. Almost every website has unused space on left and right.
But when people see my vertical monitors they all like: oh man, you are weirdo, that's awful and uncomfortable.5 -
Today I was in a pharmacy and in there were monitors (for PC's, ofc) and one just suddenly started shuttering the image and making windows error sounds. Was kinda wierd2

Dual 22"(21.5 1920x1080) IPS display monitors or one 29" ultrawide 2560x1080 monitor?
Usage : coding and little bit of gaming5 -
For the guys who uses pop! os ( apparently ubuntu breaks on rtx 3070 and don’t have the patience to find the proper drivers ) and i3wm how do you manage the scaling / dpi on different monitors ( i have 4 of them: 4k, 2k, 1920 and ultrawide 2560x1080 ) and apparently on 3 of them the cursor and font is fucking huge and on the 4k is too small. Tried scaling them manually using xrandr but it still doesn’t look right .6

Coke, water and tea/coffee at the reach of my hand. Two monitors and some noise (tv/netflix or music).

Is there a way to hibernate before updating windows? I have 15 virtual desktops rounding up to 45 desktops via 3 monitors with different setups, it would be a pain having to restore it all manually 😥1

Have you tried transporting you'r pc monitors inside suitcases? Ill be moving to another country and would like to get my screens with me. Its a six hours flight to the new destination.
Have you tried it? What precautions you took, how it went?5 -
Part number idk of TheCapeGreek's Ship of Theseus:
PC dying again. Either now all 4 of my (admittedly old) RAM sticks are dead within 3 weeks of each other or the motherboard is conking out. Either way I need to finance a new rig on Black Friday. At least I have a working hard drive and 2 monitors.3 -
I want to set up a basic "starter pack" for new colleagues with monitor, keyboard and mouse (for their desk at the office). I basically manage all IT at work, and we're a relatively small company, so I can decide pretty much whatever I want. What's your recommendations, primarily on monitors? We're talking for normal people here, not wizards like us.2

me: wanting a clean table to work, the less stuff the better, best would be a single notebook and nothing else
also me: backend dev, so 3 monitors, extern keyboard and mouse, some documentation papers and oh where is this cup coffee of last week coming from? -
I always thought the biggest obstacle to my freedom is the two big monitors I can't live without.
Today I realize it's Putin's nuclear bombs.1 -
Any cool Dev setups? I have already seen /r/cableporn and /r/battlestation. I am moving house in March and decided to rebuild my setup, new desk more monitors etc. Want to see some Dev examples.1

I recently got into an argument with a random person on internet about the new Corsair XENEON FLEX OLED, the new fancy one that you can make curved or flat…
In my opinion it doesn't make any sense, curved is better, in particular with a 45" display, so it's a cool technology but useless in this case.
Apparently this guy thinks "for work is better flat, for gaming curved".
It made me thinking… really?
There is someone out there (and maybe here) that uses huge flat monitors or when have 2 puts them parallels to each other and not turned towards himself at an angle?
It seemed a random bullshit, but maybe I could find some valid arguments why "flat is better for work" or not. 🤔12 -
Writing fun code for your esp module but wondering why it won't flash correctly. But there is a USB cable in your USB to serial and it goes behind your monitors and the esp shows you that's its powered.
10 minutes later you notice that it is plugged into your adapter instead of your computer........... -
How many monitors do you need and how do you use them?
I have three monitors at work, I used to have 2 in portrait and one landscape in the middle, during the last months I switched to the opposite (2 landscape and 1 portrait)
In my home I use 2 1080p displays landscape20 -
So well... 2 monitors are not enough for testing an server ha application with teaming/bounding interface with 3 nic.
-
Realizing that coding isn’t actually how it’s like in the movies where you got 3 monitors and 2 keyboards using both hands to make vertical green lines move, and instead it’s just you painstakingly using your brainpower to figure out how to do some random thing while going to stackoverflow every 11 minutes is the “SANTA ISNT REAL?!” of the programming community3

Anyone facing issue while using multiple screens with Latest version DEEPIN OS ?
In my case the two extension monitors are not getting signal6 -
On pager duty. Getting alerts about New Relic synthetic monitors failing in prod. Freak out. Go to check them out...all of them are pointed at the uat sandbox, not prod.
I don't know how to feel about this. -
Any suggestions on how do I extend my screen to 2 external monitors with 1 HDMI out?
Tried video streaming from USB C out to HDMI in but that isn't working.
My single HDMI port supports upto 4k output so we should be able split and run upto 4 1920p monitors.
Not sure which adaptors would work for this.10 -
I need your help. I'm currently deciding on setting up a proper multi-monitor set up (inspired by the ones you guys have) at home so I can be better productive since my current "desk" at home is actually my bed (I have a dual monitor set-up at work). I have decided on two monitor choices.
My current budget is around LKR 25,000 (USD 155) per month without it eating into my living expenses (welp, i'm poor 😢).
Do you think I should go for:
2x Dell P2214H 22" monitors in 1 month - LKR 23,600 (USD 146) (per month for one month)
https://dell.com/en-us/work/...
or ..
2x ASUS VZ249H Frameless 23.8" monitors in 2 months - LKR 25,000 (USD 155) (per month for two months)
https://asus.com/lk/Monitors/...
I would really really appreciate your opinions on this.5 -
Quick question for everyone who wasn't fully remote before march:
What kind of setup did your company provide? Did you have nice ergonomic chairs/desks? Monitors higher res than 1080p? Mechanical keyboards? How powerful was your workstation?9 -
Love having the windows app! Now I can dedicate one of three monitors to it and experience DevRant in all its full screen glory! Good work guys!

Round 2 of trying to warranty repair a new monitor (Samsung CF791 ultrawide). Of course, it would die right after the 30-day return period with B&H so now I’m at the mercy of Samsung. Spent $70 on special packing to send it to Samsung so they couldn’t claim it broke during shipping. It came back to me in a box that looked like a homeless person had once lived in it. And it still didn’t work. I just sent it off again, this time in the same box they sent, as if to say “screw you for making me spend $70 for nothing”. I fully expect it to come back still not working. And I’ll demand a replacement. $700 monitors aren’t worth what they used to be.1

Have to do work on a trashcan of a Mac, and instead of connecting my keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the trashcan I have both my monitors and keyboard+mouse connected to my laptop. Using VNC to remote into the trashcan, allowing me to use everything without actually switching devices.
I have already gotten used to using the WIN key mapped to the CMD key on mac, but fucking VNC has ALT mapped to the CMD key.

Guys I am having a question for a long time....
Say you want to work while traveling. How do you handle monitors? I ideally want two big (not the small ones) monitors while working, however it's impossible to bring two monitors, one is heavy enough...
If one day some company invents some very very thin and foldable monitors I'll be very very happy.17 -

If so, what length do you use and why?7 -

Fuuu!!!
I'm currently on elementary.
I have two monitors, one plugged to my Rx 560 and GPU and the other to onboard graphics.
Despite this my main monitor is rendered on the Intel inbuilt GPU and I have stuttery gui on my primary monitor.
