I've been using Ubuntu 14.04 since it was first released until this moment (June 2018). What a stable OS i've ever used. Thank's Linux, you're free & awesome.

Why tf yall trashing w3schools and praising mdn? When I forget the syntax I just ignore the mdn and go straight to w3schools, the information there is more condensed, more like a cheatsheet. Also their online editor is far quicker than any codepen hipster garbage you endorse

I had been banging my head on an issue for 2 days. The solution?
Replaced
“window.addEventListener(“message”, callback)”
with
“window.onmessage = callback”
What. The. Actual. Fuck??!!
Aren’t they supposed to be the same thing?? It’s written on MDN’s article that the latter is an alternative way of doing the former.
What the fuck then? I am actually really pissed right now. Ragefully pissed.11 -
Every time I search for some CSS or Javascript feature the first three or four results are always from w3schools. I want MDN! Any good tricks or sites that does not involve searching directly on MDN? Some Google filter add-on perhaps?14

Me: Don't do any of this, use Mozilla MDN web doc.

Part of my job involves researching a shitload of documentation and tutorials in order to have an established and well tested point of refference for the rest of the team. As a Django guy, I have always been happy with the plethora of tutorials and what not made available for this amazing framework. Until recently I had absolutely no clue that MDN had their own Django tutorial and I must say....I am impressed! I seldom recommend something over the already great tutorial made available by the Django page itself, but this one by MDN really is worth considerind for people starting into the framework. One can even see the love that they have for the framework just by reading the tutorials.
Kudos to MDN for creating such a great resource!4 -

StackOverflow sometimes has well-grounded and elaborate explanations on a question by well-meaning and knowledgeable developers, but oftentimes the answers also contain outdated or 'dirty' solutions and so it's always to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, in cases like the official Spring documentation, the IETF RFC's and the MDN, those provide a correct explanation to the problem, even if it requires some reading around. When it comes to serious and correct work, I favor these over the bro-zone that is StackOverflow.6 -
One of the most inefficient practices I've seen done in companies is the company housing 50+ devs having to hire an expensive consultant who is only available on a limited time to figure out mysterious or in-depth problems with the company's main application (for example, JavaScript problems).
Then the whole dev team sits on his shoulders and production can't run smoothly until he fixes things. Even worse, him having the so-called qualifications, being the 'expert', but when asked an in-depth JavaScript question, they don't know the answer.
When I suggest to figure out things in-depth so problems like these can be prevented in the future, I'm met with: "Nah bro, we'll just apply quick fix #2" just because I carry the title 'Junior Developer'. Makes me want to hit my head on the wall on how stupid these people are.
This could all be solved if the dev team would be competent in the first place, knows how to read documentation and isn't lazy, most importantly. I hate teams like that.
Grab, the damn, documentation, read W3C, read MDN, get educated, and stop using band-aid solutions! Gah.
Toxic companies like these are what's wrong with some places in the development world.
I'm a proponent of knowledge.

I hate to offer some unsolicited critique of something I happily use for free... but I have to say this somewhere to just get it out. That's what this place is for, right?
The new MDN visual design fucking sucks.
It's like a purposeful example I might make for my students - of "what not to do." There were a few things they could have done to improve MDN for sure. Instead, they didn't improve it. They just "changed it." That is always a bad move. Now everything just has less contrast and is floating around with nothing to anchor it. Didn't they show it to anyone and get feedback along the way? "So, we made all the fonts closer to the same size, removed any differentiation in weight so that everything will look the same and just kinda blur out and put people to sleep, and just in general dulled everything out as much as possible - and also here's this logo thing too."4 -
I like a Product Manager/Owner/CTO who invites coffee when a dev burnout. This is not a story, a hope seems to be.2

MDN best practice recommends not to sniff browser versions but rather detect features. So far, so good. In reality, we don't need to detect features, we need to detect bugs to handle outdated mobile Safari versions. Apple again. 🍎🍏🤢🤮

Turns out those "Community Calls" they've hosted are just a ploy to damage control Mozilla's first steps into AI crap, back when they added prompts to MDN Web Docs. Fast-forward to today and even most loyal Firefox users should get enraged. Call me surprised (no pun intended).
So, Waterfox and Librewolf it is, then... Or Vivaldi, who cares at this point, really.

Tech Twitter is a fucking joke, unless you're a somewhat accomplished programmer, wrote something interesting / useful, or at the least have contributed anything meaningful that isn't just a repository with Markdown documents in then I don't want to see your fucking stupid inspirational quotes or words of encouragement with thousands of damn retweets. The circle jerk is frankly just unbearable.
There are plenty of developers that you can learn a lot from and that's great, and I don't want to put new developers down, but you're really not in any position to be giving advice or motivational monologues, you're still new, or worse yet, you've literally just started. Behave yourself.
I'm convinced they're all just LARPers who jerk each other off and shut people down when they have "naughty" opinions. They spend more time writing articles about HTML tags or some aspect of JavaScript you can just get from MDN and get a million fucking applause for it. Maybe you'd be a better programmer if you actually did some programming.

How has your experience been with Udemy courses?
I've taken three courses among which a low quality one and I'm not impressed at all:
- not in-depth enough
- no quality control on courses
I think that I learn much more from official documentation (MDN, books,..) than from such courses in general.
I've taken Lynda.com courses and they are of the highest quality and learning value. Lynda.com was amazing and professional. Pluralsight, same thing.
I have to learn how to filter courses better.

I've only recently started learning how to use the command line for more than changing directories. Is there an equivalent of MDN for shell scripting? Is there Idiot's Guide to Shell Scripting (also works for me)?

Fucking hell, writing browser addons is annoying.
I just wanted some small addon for myself. But first did it in tampermonkey. It was supposed to take a screenshot of the website and upload it together with the link of the website to my server. First used html2canvas. Terrible performance. But addons can take direct screenshots.
Reason, when I listen to something or watch something while holding my little daughter, I cannot copy links over. But I can quickly slap a key combination and save for later what I just saw.
Anyway. Addons are terrible. The error messages makes no sense. Missing permission active_tab... Fucking hell, it was missing host permissions. Permissions has to be one of. Documentation sucks on MDN.
And then, you can not even install unsigned addons. I do not want to share my addon with mozilla. You have to install Firefox Dev or ESR for it. Switched to Firefox Dev.
But I feel sorry for everyone having to write browser addons professionally.2 -

this is my first actual rant. I am trying to learn es6 right now and have encountered switch statements for the first time. after a 26 minute video explaining how to do switch statements (which is literally just the same kind of information on them that you can get from w3 or mdn I am given a large task with no practice to create a switch function that hold four values two values containing positive integers and two values accepting strings. then I have to be able to pass days and minutes through it.
an example solution after input would be:
addTime(1,"hour",3,"minutes")
I feel like this is too complicated with 26 minutes of information and no practice exercises to prepare for that.
