Non dev related but: release my first track 😊
I'd love to create something which is near musical perfection for myself 😃
There's a couple of tracks which come close for me but not 99 percent yet.36
At one of the biggest venue's of the Netherlands. The Heineken musical hall.
Windows is starting....4
Had this conversation with a friend a while ago (not dev related). He convinced me to start working on a design! (detail: he doesn't know me well, know him through a best friend but I consider him a friend)
Friend: *shows new tattoo* what ya think?
Me: awesome man! I still idk maybe want a tattoo too...
Friend: ohhh! What of?
Me: uhm well... my favourite music genre... uhm...
Friend: what's up with your doubts?
Me: well.... everyone always tells me not to tattoo anything relating to music because musical taste cab change easily...
Friend: may I guess the genre?
Me: yeah sure :)
Friend: hardstyle, maybe raw hardstyle/rawstyle?
Friend: well why wouldn't you get a tattoo of it?!
Me: well, I mean what if my taste changes?
Friend: dude. do you have the slightest clue how fucking happy/energetic you look when you hear that music?! It'd be hard to imagine you losing your love for that genre! And if then, then what? That genre has gotten you through the darkest places, most difficult times and has pretty much made you into the person you are right now, even if you'd change factories genres, it'd be a reminder of how you beat getting bullied and became the person you are now!
Me: yeah.... but everyone keeps telling me that its not a good ide..'
Friend: fuck them. You love this music to the fucking point, you told me earlier that you'd like to start producing it!
Fuck those people. If you'd like it, go get that fucking tattoo!
I love that guy!
Anyone into electronic music production here? I could use some tips 😅17
That moment you write some magnificent code and everyone is sleeping so you can't share it with anyone but you feel like the room should turn into an exciting musical where you win an award. (Best code can ONLY be written between the hours of 12am and 6am)
The next day, you try to explain to your significant other (user) how amazing this new genius way of doing that "thing" was, in hopes of sharing your excitement but all you get is a "you're such a dork" instead.
You may even try to share it with a coworker or fellow programmer but somehow they just don't see how exciting it is for you.
When I was a kid I programmed a musical tune in QBasic (1994). It was magic. That "beep blips woin blop tuuuuu blups" coming out of the 386 builtin speaker just sounded like: "World, you are the next".
This week I reached a major milestone in a Machine Learning/Music Analysis project that I've been working on for a long time!!
I'm really proud to launch 'The Harmonic Algorithm' as an open source project! It represents the evolution of something that's grown with me through two thesis' (initially in music analysis and later in creative computation) and has been a vessel for my passion in both Music and Computation/Machine Learning for a number of years.
For more info, detailed usage examples (with video clips) and installation instructions for anyone inclined to try it out, have a look at the GitHub repo for the project:
"The Harmonic Algorithm, written in Haskell and R, generates musical domain specific data inside user defined constraints then filters it down and deterministically ranks it using a tailored Markov Chain model trained on ingested musical data. This presents a unique tool in the hands of the composer or performer which can be used as a writing aid, analysis device, for instrumental study or even in live performance."1
I'm so goddamm fucking tired of this fucking shitty ed sheeran fucking.
Fuck ed sheeran, fuck this bland predictible squared music.
I mean, not him, the music.
Jesus fucking christ, every fucking uber I take this shit ass song is playing.
I heard this song like 50 times already, I'm not even fucking kidding.
This is the musical equivalent of being a passive smoker.10
Remember how much free time we used to have in school? Like I used to play a musical instrument, binge on series, play a ton of games, id pickup random hobbies just because I can.
Being an adult is so fucking depressing I wanna be a kid again.2
I fucking hate how when an (musical) artist dies, all of a sudden everyone is a fucking fan of them.
First it was Lil peep, then it was fucking Xtension cord dude, then Mac Miller and now Nippsey.
Like ik damn well all the people I am friends with saying "rip Nippsey" have heard like 2 songs from him and listened to them twice.
But now that he's dead you're acting like you bumped his shit all day & everyday? Fuck off man.18
I put my fingers into MY EYESSSSS.
I was losing my mind a bit because of that stupid task that keeps unraveling so I typed a part of the lyrics of some random song that came to mind. Sent it to a group chat where people are actively talking about random shit.
Just that one line, someone sang along, and now they're fighting about the artist, albums, concerts, and some musical existential crisis whatever the fuck that is. Then I left the group chat. Lol.6
The next level of "but you are a programmer"
Presenting you: the butt hurt format

I love musical desks. Ive been here about a year and a half and ive moved desks about 10 times. Fml4
A while back a buddy and I were keen on making an MMORPG that for a variety of reasons just didn't work out.
Game development is an exercise in futility unless you have a LOT of time and a LOT of willpower. Unfortunately, where the project would have taken at least both of us, only one of us was able to actually do the work. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which one of us it was :|
It sucks because it was a stellar idea, the art style was going to be amazing, and I had already began working hard on a lot of the music. My best musical work to date, just sitting private on my soundcloud, unused and collecting dust.
Listening to them now still fills me with that glimmer of hope to a degree, but it's bittersweet.3
My dream project is something very simple but not yet done in Pakistan.
I want to create a marketplace for musical instruments and related equipment. Currently it's very hard for amateur musicians in Pakistan to find the gear they're looking for, and being one of these musicians myself, I know how frustrating it can be. So it'd be great if I can solve that problem in a country where the government does very little to help independent artists grow.1
Most definitely not dev related..
Guitar tabs that contain arrangements for +5 guitars on a band with just a rythm and lead guitar are fucking annoying.
Fucking hate having to piece the fucking melody by myself. And yes. I DON'T neeed the fucking tabs since I can figure the song by ear, its just that doing it like that takes way too much fucking time.
Getting fucking bored of playing the guitar tho. Been doing it since I was very young and never really liked it. Always wanted violin and then bass.
Have been looking at a nice fender precision bass. Made in Mexico so not really expensive, sounds equally as good and is going for a good $650 bucks plus the amp.
No lie, i am way too interested on getting me that bass already. Have been learning Roundabout by Yes(because I am a progressive rock fan AND a Jojo fan) and practicing with a friends bass whenever I get the chance.
If you already play guitar and you are good with guitar then picking up the bass takes some adjustment, but it's still not as heavy as going at it with no musical training.
Man I just want a bass so bad. I am just so cheap at spending money.13
New floor opened in our office building last month or so.. they are filling it and now there is lack of chairs. So we typically can pay musical chair @office. This is my wallpaper made using gimp5
Apparently we're playing musical chairs at work... I work from home for one day and now my chair is missing. If you borrow a chair put it back where you found it. It's common courtesy.1
Since I was a child I had always been interested in computers and when I bought a MacBook Pro at the age of 15 I discovered that I could make apps for iOS for free with Xcode and figured I could try it out. Started watching swift tutorials and shortly fell in love with programming. I then started building a stupid camera app, and published it on the AppStore. I am now working on my second project called ChairGame (musical chairs) I am 16 now and confident that I will become a developer.1
Count the number of keyboards in your room (including musical keyboards).
1,.. 2,.. 3,.. 4,.. 5,.. 6,.. Damn, that is a lot.14
Sry, music / perfectpitch rant, !dev
My biggest (non-dev) pet peeve out there right now is this wave of "oohh look I did a transcription" Youtube videos that comes out whenever someone famous for complex harmony (such as Collier) releases a song. I mean that'd be fantastic, but they're OBVIOUSLY NEARLY ALL DAMN WRONG IN SO MANY PLACES.
More frustrating is that no-one seems to actually realise, the video skyrockets with wowed casual viewers amazed they're looking at sheet music that looks vaguely convincing, and everyone treats them as some musical genius. Dahh. Wake up people.
(Exceptions made for June Lee. He's awesome.)1
Hey guys, this question isn't really dev related, I just want to know some of the devs on here's musical tastes, so please commemt your favorite music genres, bands...etc4
How do companies move forward with respect to a project? I know its mostly about fulfilling the demands of user and copying competition's features, but what amazes me is that some companies make some truly unthinkable moves and becomes a point of sensation.
For eg tiktok. Tiktok was just a musical video app at first , a ridiculous rip-off of dubsmash and other semi successful apps. But it kept improving its core while adding creative features and today its a hit . They fucking mixed games with videos, who would have thought?! Before tiktok, people were just trying to make video streaming professional and useful... Skype never thought of experimenting with games, and Google has always been terrible in social media area .
It might be just me lacking the taste of creativity.
Even Facebook is a little creative, but most of their creativeness seems to come with either copying or buying the competition. Like, today only what'sapp is something that looks a little different from the rest of their apps , and they are trying too hard to even make that part of their homogeneous media pack.
But seriously tho, is it the developers who think of crazy ideas? Or some completely irrelevant senior official with no knowledge of what is and isn't possible with current stacks? Where do they get the inspiration?2
Let's be honest - given the state of the world today, the more I listen to Megadeth, the more I relate to what Dave Mustaine has been pissed off about for a few decades now. Oh, you don't know who Dave Mustain is? He was, like, the 5th guy in Metallica. Rather, he was the bass player until he got fucked over because he was a dick and thrown off the first album Metallica did. Don't worry - he did OK. He formed Megadeth and still had quite a successful musical career. Why am I ranting about him? Simple - A lot of his lyrics are darker than Metallica's. I honestly don't know what the fuck I'm doing with my software/personal/professional life right now. I've got ideas & dreams, but all this COVID shit is just draining the fuck out of me. Sometimes I feel like I've failed - most of the lifeforms on this planet manage to procreate. Well, that didn't happen for me. On the down side, I didn't get to be a father. On the up side, I didn't punish the life of a child with my own brands of mistakes, ignorance, and stupidity. My life is littered with male failures. My biological father (paranoid, schizophrenic ) died at 58, doing everyone around him a favor. My grandfather on my mother's side died of colon cancer at 69 (so-called reformed alcoholic, manic depressive on lithium with great abusive tendencies). My step father who adopted me? Sure - he loved me. He just never understood me. "Computers are just a tool". Fuck you, 'dad'. Go play with your horses and tell me what I'm doing isn't meaningful. Where was I? Oh yes, almost killing myself last summer. I think between COVID and my own colossal screw ups & paranoia I went over the entire fucking edge. I pulled myself out of it with the help of medication, counseling, and learning to just let shit blow up because "it's not my problem". I'm still angry. Perhaps that's the only thing that keeps me going from time to time. I'll leave you with a quote from Ghandi - No, not that idealistic, limited one, Mahatma Ghandi. From his grandson, who managed to really pick up what he was putting down - Arun Ghandi:
“Use your anger for good. Anger to people is like gas to the automobile - it fuels you to move forward and get to a better place. Without it, we would not be motivated to rise to a challenge. It is an energy that compels us to define what is just and unjust.”
Please help me out on this, fellow ranters:
I have a js app, a sandbox for musicians, which everyone is checking out once, then after fiddling around, they never really come back.
What can I do, to make an app more desirable, so that musicians would incorporate my tool into their musical repertoir?
One advice I've got from a friend is to save the session, like jsfiddle, so that the user can continue his/her work later and don't have to start all over.
If you want to check out my app, then the link is in my profile.3
