Search - "metal"
I'm trying out a new rendering engine, it's pretty slow but I'm getting somewhere.
My (6 years old) client is sitting next to me and is kind of picky and tells me exactly what to do.
No payout though 🤔16
Customer: What's the difference between an antivirus and an antimalware?
Me: *thinks for a second* So an antimalware program is like if you're on a beach with a metal detector. You're looking around for metal that's already buried in the sand. An antivirus is like actively watching people for if they drop metal on the ground.
Customer: That's an interesting analogy.
Coworker: *quietly* That's a actually a really good analogy...6
This may be limited to Germany:
Apparently you can get free vouchers (from 2 to 5 euros in value) on the website "pizza.de".
There is a lottery kind of game right now on this URL: https://pizza.de/casino/
If you just open the developer console and run "win()", you "win" the game and can enter your phone number to get your voucher 🤔
What idiot programmed this?
What idiot reviewed this?
What idiot put this live?40
I wonder when there will be the first manufacturer to introduce the "cool" new notch design to normal screens. 🤔27
Microsoft is investing in Git, VSCode, Electron, Github, Bash-on-Windows. Things that decentralize and help prevent lock-in.
Apple is taking away the only universal cross platform graphics system (OpenGL), locking developers into Metal, and taking away our escape keys.25
Mother of god, was listening to the US govt hearing of zuckerberg about the recent scandals. The amount of very fucking simple obvious questions he 'could not' answer normally...
Govt person: Would you be willing to change Facebook's business model if this was required for the security and privacy of Facebook users' accounts?
Zuck: I don't understand your question.
Sorry, WHAT?! You don't need particular rocket science to understand what's being asked here. A combination of common sense and knowing the English language and English grammar in combination with maybe having finished some form of education should be enough to understand this ridiculously easy question.
Do you need it written on a golden plate with fucking blue letters in Facebook's font with the S letters as dollar signs while drinking 10 gallons of 'fuck every persons privacy'?!
Or maybe shoving it up your ass in the form of heated/glowing metal letters of 10+ inches in height? We could arrange that as well.27
Alone in the office. Everyone left to see Portugal play. Time to blast some heavy fucking metal. 🤘20
Alestorm had a huge rubber duck with them at Alcatraz metal festival yesterday. I love them even more now! 😂7

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) headphones in, whatever music that your mood requires at the time (my taste varies from classical to country to blues to jazz, pop, rock, metal and even heavy metal (growls) at times).
libre.fm is a good source for non-redundant music. The community channel is actually very good. (even though some crap do creep in every once in a while)
If you can zone out the noise around you, have a coffee machine within your chair's (assuming it has wheels) roll-range - you're all good.
PS : There's one problem that you can never rule out - interruptions from people around you, for that, you make a list of predefined answers :10
Someone called me an incapable, arrogant bitch today because I didn't let them test in prod. We had words.
The monologue from Full Metal Jacket went through my head at one point, and I almost didn't mute my phone in time before I said it rather than just thinking it. I'm not sure I would still have a job if I did, but I kind of wish I didn't mute my phone.13
Friend: Why do you always listen to metal music when coding?
Me: So that if non-programmers saw me smashing my keyboard, they will understand better why I did so.
Friend: Fair point.....3
To become an engineer (CS/IT) in India, you have to study:
1. 3 papers in Physics (2 mechanics, 1 optics)
2. 1 paper in Chemistry
3. 2 papers in English (1 grammar, 1 professional communication). Sometimes 3 papers will be there.
4. 6 papers in Mathematics (sequences, series, linear algebra, complex numbers and related stuff, vectors and 3D geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, maxima/minima, differential equations, descrete mathematics)
5. 1 paper in Economics
6. 1 paper in Business Management
7. 1 paper in Engineering Drawing (drawing random nuts and bolts, locus of point etc)
8. 1 paper in Electronics
9. 1 paper in Mechanical Workshop (sheet metal, wooden work, moulding, metal casting, fitting, lathe machine, milling machine, various drills)
And when you jump in real life scenario, you encounter source/revision/version control, profilers, build server, automated build toolchains, scripts, refactoring, debugging, optimizations etc. As a matter of fact none of these are touched in the course.
Sure, they teach you a large set of algorithms, but they don't tell you when to prefer insertion sort over quick sort, quick sort over merge sort etc. They teach you Las Vegas and Monte Carlo algorithms, but they don't tell you that the randomizer in question should pass Die Hard test (and then you wonder why algorithm is not working as expected). They teach compiler theory, but you cannot write a simple parser after passing the course. They taught you multicore architecture and multicore programming, but you don't know how to detect and fix a race condition. You passed entire engineering course with flying colors, and yet you don't know ABC of debugging (I wish you encounter some notorious heisenbug really soon). They taught 2-3 programming languages, and yet you cannot explain simple variable declaration.
And then, they say that you should have knowledge of multiple fields. Oh well! you don't have any damn idea about your major, and now you are talking about knowledge in multiple fields?
What is the point of such education?
PS: I am tired of interviewing shitty candidates with flying colours in their marksheets. Go kids, learn some real stuff first, and then talk some random bullshit.18
*builds a DIY 3.5mm audio wire out of metal jacks, 28 AWG electrical wire, and Ethernet wire coat as a sleeve*
*measures its resistance by doing 4 wire measurement*
(4 wire measurement explanation => https://youtu.be/L9q5vwCESEQ?t=260)
Turns out to be 800 milliohms for this wire.. well that's crappy. At such a low voltage like what the sound card puts out (30mV peak-to-peak at best) that's gonna heavily attenuate the sound, no?
*measures another audio wire that I bought a while ago with the same method*
3.2 fucking ohms, and my test at 1A significantly heated up the wire too. Turns out that this DIY contraption is 4 times better than the commercial ones out there... Sometimes you really have to dial down to what common standards you're building your own stuff against. And it's relatively easy to build too.. awesome! :)
Well, all I can say is that I'm satisfied ^^11

Could people (including friends) fucking stop to invalidate my favourite music genre?!
'Its just too hard', 'its so aggressive', 'its only boom boom boom'
Always, al-fucking-ways at every party or wherever when people are allowed to put on music, whenever I'm allowed to, my music is turned off right away.
'Sorry but not everyone likes this and you're not the only one here'
I'm sorry, WHAT? I'VE LISTENED TO STYLES I REALLY FUCKING DON'T LIKE FOR FUCKING HOURS AND I'VE SWALLOWED IT ALL. THEN AT LEAST LET ME PLAY ONE FUCKING SONG ON A WHOLE FUCKING EVENING.
And nothing against metal peoples, really not but its nearly always the metal people who put their music on all evening and keep telling how awesome metal is and the second I mention my genre or out it on: 'oh but that sucks' *switches back to metal*
Go fuck yourselves. I'm swallowing this shit every fucking time but I'm getting fucking sick of this bullshit.
By the way, my favourite genre is raw hardstyle aka rawstyle.71
I just got my first set of D&D dice! I know it’s just some metal polyhedra but I’m really happy to have them!15

Thousands of lines of code analyzed.
Dozens of log files across 6 servers.
Countless pots of coffee.
Much power metal.
One line of code.
Developers of any age are frequently introverted. So I decided it would be interesting to try singing Katy perry as loud enough that others can hear while I was sitting on the toilet in the restroom at work. I'm a metal guy so this is even weirder) As expected, everyone looked like it was just an ordinary day and did not comment. They were either not interested in commenting or totally cool with it. not going to do that one any more though.
I've also begun going around to everyone's cubes and handing them a coffee cream as a gift thing at random times. You can see the terrified look in their eyes as they decide whether I'm crazy, but 90% of the time they smile, accept the cream enthusiastically saying thank you.
Social experiments are fun.
I'm a little bit very crazy.11
I'm starting to lose faith in humanity ... I mean recruiters ...
But then I start thinking to myself: "Did I ever HAVE faith in them?" 🤔14
The coolest project I've worked on was for a certain country's Navy. The project itself was cool and I'll talk about it below but first, even cooler than the project was the place were I worked on it.
I would go to this island off the coast where the navy had its armoury. Then to get into the armoury I'd go through this huge tunnel excavated in solid rock.
Finally, once inside I would have to go thru the thickest metal doors you've ever seen to get to crypto room, which was a tiny room with a bunch of really old men - cryptographers - scribbling math formulae all day long.
I can't give a lot of technical details on the project for security reasons but basically it was a bootable CD with a custom Linux distro on it. Upon booting up the system would connect to the Internet looking for other nodes (other systems booted with that CD). The systems would find each other and essentially create an ad-hoc "dark net".
The scenario was that some foreign force would have occupied the country and either destroyed or taken control of the Navy systems. In this case, some key people would boot these CDs in some PC somewhere not under foreign control (and off the navy grounds.) This would supposedly allow them to establish secure communications between surviving officers. There is a lot more to it but that's a good harmless outline.
As a bonus, I got to tour an active aircraft carrier :)10
Spotify just asked me for my ZIP code (to verify my family plan again after like a year).
I typed 00000 and they accepted that 🤔8
I just can't understand what will lead an so called Software Company, that provides for my local government by the way, to use an cloud sever (AWS ec2 instance) like it were an bare metal machine.
They have it working, non-stop, for over 4 years or so. Just one instance. Running MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, PHP and an f* Tomcat server with no less than 10 HUGE apps deployed. I just can't believe this instance is still up.
By the way, they don't do backups, most of the data is on the ephemeral storage, they use just one private key for every dev, no CI, no testing. Deployment are nightmares using scp to upload the .war...
But still, they are running several several apps for things like registering citizen complaints that comes in by hot lines. The system is incredibly slow as they use just hibernate without query optimizations to lookup and search things (n+1 query problems).
They didn't even bother to get a proper domain. They use an IP address and expose the port for tomcat directly. No reverse proxy here! (No ssl too)
I've been out of this company for two years now, it was my first work as a developer, but they needed help for an app that I worked on during my time there. I was really surprised to see that everything still the same. Even the old private key that they emailed me (?!?!?!?!) back then still worked. All the passwords still the same too.
I have some good rants from the time I was there, and about the general level of the developers in my region. But I'll leave them for later!
Is it just me or this whole shit is crazy af?3
A friend found this Microsoft link a few weeks ago. The background image is missing because it's been removed from imgur and it's still broken to date 🤔
I just wanna smash their head with a metal chair then shove their own keyboard up their fucking ass... Sideways while they choke on a rusty knife...
I get through tough devDays like this:
1. Brew coffee more black than a serial killer's soul in the midst of the Gotthard Base Tunnel without electricity in the midnight during a solar eclipse.
2. Flush the blackness down the throat.
3. Load the Playlist: Mostly Death/Doom Metal
4. Put on over-ear headphones (the ones your coworkers can see from a distance telling them to fuck of with their questions).
5. Code through without pauses (except for releasing piss)
6. If you're paid by the hour: $$$profit$$$10
Monday morning, went to the local grocery store to get myself some croissants and 2 bottles of wine.
Cashier: "Already at it in the morning, you sure about that?"
Me: "Long story short, I've got a Wi-Fi driver from Intel to debug and rewrite, and it's a fucking piece of shit.. can't go at it without hitting or preferably exceeding the Ballmer Peak... Also I'm awake since yesterday evening already."
Why even ask? Yeah I'm a fucking alcoholic, and guess why that is.. stupid nontechnical fucks, certified enganeers like that motherfucker at Intel who wrote this pile of garbage called ipw2200, and technology that can't be arsed to work properly on its own unless I build the fucking thing myself, just to name a few reasons.
You know what, fucking piece of shit from Intel, whoever it is? How about I let you choke on my dick while fucking hanging you with a sharp metal wire that's carrying 2kVAC from a microwave transformer, just to see whether I'd nut first, or you either choke, get electrocuted, or get your fucking throat slit first. Certificates aren't an excuse for committing this fucking pile of shit and calling it a fucking product!!
Now, it's time to dive into this giant stinking fucking turd I guess.. first glass of wine to get myself prepared for the shitstorm that's a giant 20k LoC C file with barely any comments, to look what the fuck causes this fucking pile of shit to disconnect and ask for WPA credentials after a while, despite having them stored.. and not reconnect after that, because why the fuck would you?!11
How tf does these even make sense?! That's a fucking sledgehammer and large metal chisel on fucking steroids. If your parents don't know what the fuck those are and realize they have nothing to do with fixing a relatively flimsy box (in comparison) they probably need more than their WiFi fixed, but since they managed to fucking raise you, I doubt they're that dumb. I get that parents might not always understand technology, but shit, at least respect the fact that they survived without the Internet, which you probably couldn't do...3
I hope Desks of devRant is still a thing because..

The music I hear while coding can describe my current mood:
Dubstep and other electronic music -> chilled and focused
Movie soundtracks -> everything I do today is working fine
Anime Openings/JPop -> in desperate need for motivation
Metal -> why is that son of a code not working?!
What kind of music do you listen to while coding?18
Typical TSA (Airport Security)
Security: Please put all of your handheld objects and your outer clothes in this basket.
Me: (puts my bag, in flight luggage, and takes out laptop, bluetooth speaker, bluetooth mouse, bluetooth keyboard, tablet, android phone, dongle bag, and windows phone)
S: (stares at me as if I am a rich kid)
M: May I go through?
M: (smirks, and goes through metal detector)
M: (oh shit.)
Scanning Officer: Raise your hand!
S: (Hovers the detection stick around my body, but it doesn't ring, tells me to pass through the detector again. Still rings. Super confused. Asks me to do this 2-3 times more. Still same.)
M: Aha! I have my bluetooth earphones here! Sorry!
S: (stares at me, as if he is saying what a f****** weirdo)
My stuff comes out. I put my devices in the bag. The scanning officer stares at me.
To be continued....2
Had the Windows Insider Preview for a month or so to get Ubuntu Subsystem early back when it was Insider-only.
Turns out that your license policy changes when you use Preview builds: if your PC isn't updated to a certain build by checkpoints set throughout the year, your license expires and you have to reinstall Windows. No way to recover anything already on the device. So if you get Insider Preview and shut your laptop off for too long...
Thus began a killer combo attack on my Surface Pro 3.
While trying to figure out what was going on and loading up a recovery on a flash drive, the Surface Pro 3 BIOS was sitting idle behind me. On 100% CPU. The only reason I think this is that by the time I noticed the insane fan noise, the screen was hot enough to burn my finger as I tried to turn it off. The heat sensor triggered it to shut off before I could, though.
That heat sensor, however, won't turn it off if it's busy installing Windows, supposedly to keep anything from getting hopelessly corrupted. What followed we're 3 hours of fan whirring from a slab of metal hot enough to cook an egg with.
Windows is back and working. The battery indicator, however, melted during reinstallation. And the battery lasts an hour, max. Thankfully I'm not out of a tablet, but it seems to me that W10 is becoming more and more like malware, just waiting for you to activate one of it's delightful payloads.4
Server room horror story time!
So I went into my little server room yesterday and heard a lot of noises that were like someone was cutting metal. So I started looking and hearing from where the sound came, ended up being a DELL PowerEdge 2950 from which all 6 drives were failing.. got lucky to back everything up, had to use the deepfreeze method though.. so guys learn from this mistake and don't put disks from the same batch in your server unless you have a good backup solution. Feel free to share your horror stories down in the comments ;)5
This is the one thing about Spotify that annoys the living hell out of me (yes, I use spotify, if anyone knows a good/working self hosted alternative, let me know! I've tried quite a few including funkwhale but they all failed for me).
I'm a raw hardstyle/rawstyle lover and listen to the raw duo Malice a lot. Now, what would the problem be here? Sometimes, there are several artists in different scenes with the same name. This is completely fine.
Spotify, however, mixes up music of the raw duo Malice and the rock/metal band Malice. I keep getting release notifications/news regarding new music/events from Malice but 90 percent of the time this is about the rock/metal band and NOT the raw duo.
It's also very weird to suddenly hear rock music while listening to my daily mix; the wrong malice is mixed in once again.
Yesterday I got an email saying "Check out Malice's newest release on Spotify!"
*OH FUCK YEAH*
*opens Spotify release radar*
That's the other malice 😡
Is it so hard, Spotify? Entirely hiding the artist results in the right one being hidden as well for me 😞15
At my parents house for the holidays and I don't have my original "duck" so I had to get a new one. Handmade out of rubber and metal and looks damn awesome5
Gunnery Sgt. Hartman:
What do you code, anyway?
SIR, JAVA, SIR!
Gunnery Sgt. Hartman:
JAVA? Holy dogshit! Only steers and queers code in Java!! And you don't much look like a steer to me so that kind of narrows it down. Do you suck dick?
SIR, NO, SIR!

For my final project as a first year computer engineer, I have to implement a FAT32 file system using a bare metal c++ compiler that will need to work on arduino uno/due....
I've only been in the computer engineering space for 2 months.
Not sure I can do it, but I'm going to try my best!
Wish me luck10
Soooo I think I have finally come to the point that I may have to create a YouTube channel, to teach software engineering from the ground up... and teach it the way the universities and everyone else should be teaching it, so that they have a solid foundation.... throwing hello world, and loops and variables at folks out of the box without any of the environment context or low level embedded register, even logic gate understanding
That lack of understanding is why, soooo many college students and younger folks, are actually pretty shitty engineers. Everything is high level languages and theoretical concepts to them. Nothing practical, that’s why there’s sooo many python and java developers that can’t for the life of them understand memory management, low level hardware interfacing etc, because the colleges don’t teach it the way it use to be taught.
I seriously fear 30 years from now or sooner when there are few embedded engineers only left till retirement, as without those folks the whole pyramid of electronics falls to pieces.
Java, C#, python, all that shit don’t run on the bare metal... there’s this magical layer of C, and assembler that does all the work just so folks can abstract their thoughts.
Either 1 of two situations will happen.. price of electronics will rise because the embedded guys are few and far between therefore salaries skyrocket... OR everything starts running shit like java on the metal, where there are a over abundance of developers, their salaries will be low because there are soo many but the processing power, space, and energy needed to run java natively causes electronics cost to increase
but regardless 30 years from now if those script kiddies are building everything I fear it cuz there’s gonna be memory leaks, and overflow issues everywhere.. shit be blowing up more than 4th of July.. lol
Soooo in effort to prevent that and keep the embedded engineers up, or atleast properly educate the script kiddies, I’m gonna make that YouTube channel.. 1 maybe 2 videos a week, 1-2 hours sessions each.. starting at the fucken ground and building up.42
I hate when I'm being questioned when I wander off to the kitchen to get a sandwich for 5 minutes when the smokers at the office have their sixth smoking break that usually takes about 10 minutes.
Let me enjoy my non-smoker breaks 😒9

I fucking hate december. It's as dark outside as in a hobo's ass standing in a tunnel during a solar eclipse and there is "love" and "friends" everywhere.
Time for some nordic doom metal.5
South Africa Electricity:
This is after I lost my 7th 3000VA online UPS...
In South Africa we have 240V power most of the time which is great, but then there is scheduled power outages (because our electricity companies cannot "handle the load").
When we have a power outage we have automatic generators which brings everything back up although there is still the 1 minute drop which has weird spikes and odd voltages before switching to the generator (as the generators wait until they are stable)
This has being destroying our equipment, we had a $2000 repair bill 3 TIMES for 3 SEPERATE Xerox Machines that have surge protectors although their circuit board somehow fried.
We have lost 7 3000VA UPSes (3 different brands) and 5 voltage regulators we put to protect the UPSes.
The one UPS that fried just had 2 dead fuses, I decided to replace them (unplugged the batteries to avoid 240V) and when plugging the batteries back in there was a huge spark and flame and the metal and plastic melted onto the board and turned black (the metal pins to connect the battery are non existant now)
I am done with electricity...
P.S. 2 of our generators also got hit by lightning as we are high on a hill and ALL the plastic cable coverings inside the generator were melted15
Here's my current setup. Needs a bit of improvement still.
A few years back I thought getting two big touchscreens would be amazing to use for making music. I rarely touch them. They get dusty all the time. They are too reflective. The border around them is way too thick. They are too big to be useful in this configuration. I'll be replacing them with normal screens and probably go for a vertical arrangement instead.
As you can see, there's a fair bit of stuff on my desk. There's a USB sound interface that could be rack mounted but I've been too lazy to buy or make anything to house it. I have a pair of headphones, a wireless headset and a Rift hanging off of the microphone stand. I rarely use the microphone and guitar at the moment (considered trying some voice acting, not particularly good at guitar!)
The desk was originally 2 desks from an Internet cafe that was being refurbished. I cut the ends off them and joined them together to make a desk to fit the space I had and stuck some metal legs onto it (used to have a big ugly brown metal frame). Oh and made some holes to add cable grommets and it has an IKEA cable tray underneath.
There's also a slide out music keyboard underneath (made from some bits of wood and a drawer runner, it's quite clunky and I'm tempted to use some rack rails instead).
The drawers were to store stuff from my desk in but I just replaced that stuff with other stuff...5
A few hours ago I decided it was a good idea to to clean up my keyboard. I did so and took a walk leaving the keys to dry.
After I came back I hoovered the -board and decided to put back the keys. I started with the special keys since they were the easiest to find (and some required a metal thing).
Now, I was quickly made aware of something that I had never known nor noticed before. Bear with me here as I'm not a person that cares too much about hardware unless I need to. (Hardware here meaning stuff like mice, keyboards, headsets, and stuff like that). But I learned that
Not all keys are the same size. They look really similar to someone like me. But I manned up and put the keys back.
A little under 1.5 hours later and I now posses a keyboard that is in uncanny valley. It doesn't feel like it though, and it shouldn't be that big of a problem since I never look at my keyboard anyway.
Messaged one of my m8's about and this was his reply
one kind per row
usually says the row on the underside"
Now fantasize about the elasmobranch fish which is characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton of which I am the proprietor at what he said. I pulled a key out and, sure enough, "C28 R1".
Now I am not sure about the 28th column, but it did fit in the first row.
I was about 17 years old had tried wood & metal craftsmanship but never liked it, so I spoke with a counsellor and mentioned I like computers as I play a lot of games.
That counsellor laughed at me ( a shut in that rarely says anything ) and told me I'm too stupid..
Since then, I have scored almost pure top grades without any particular job goal.
But eventually met a good friend who wanted to be a Web developer, so I simply followed the same path and kept on reaping top grades lol.. :)
As Ana says in overwatch, "Never stop fighting for what you believe in."2
My boss codes shitty ugly fucking abominations.
These fucking piles of hacky crap are worth less than a penny puked out by a dog, eaten by another one and then shit out, grabbed by a vagrant, stuffed in his arse and then sold as raw metal by the cremation worker after the former's death.
Fuck this. I'm not gonna rewrite this. Fuck you.5
Some of my working colleagues occasionally forget to lock their PCs even though they're told to, so a while ago I started opening YouTube videos or image galleries of Nicolas Cage on their desktop so that they learn.
One of them is very resistant to it though and left earlier (it's Friday and he will be back at Wednesday) without locking or shutting down his PC.
So this time I flipped his display, set Shia LeBoef as his wallpaper with a dia show also featuring Nicolas Cage, Ryan Gosling and Daniel Radcliffe and set Nicolas Cage's face as his cursor image.5
I'm sick of this stupid tech world.
Don't get me wrong, I love tech. I just can't stand anymore the global brainwashing that we're part of.
Think about all the huge companies making profit on our data. For a better service, yeah sure, but do we really understand what the cost is?
Ok sure, you don't care about your data because you trust these companies and the advantages are all worth it. What about the fact that we are all forced to buy the next new smartphone after 2 years?
Like if removable batteries were a problem for us, users. Or like the audio jack. Because now someone decided that the pricey wireless headphones are Just What You Need™.
Do you think you own your smartphone?
No, you don't. You are paying a bunch of money for something that soon will be just a useless brick of glass and metal which you can't repair. But you'll be happy anyway.
Someone is so happy to the point that they will defend their favorite company, doesn't matter how they decided to stick it into their ass.
Open your eyes, you've been brainwashed.25
There is an edition of Ubuntu called **SATANic Edition**. It is a combination of Open Source OS and Metal Music. You can thank me later: https://ubuntusatanic.org/6
Not a rant but ohhh well.
Today I dissolved Fe (iron)into HCl and well result is FeCl + H
Then I had FeCl in solution and I added NaOH to it to make iron hydroxide.
Then I heated it up to make Iron Oxide.
Then I filtered of the liquid.
Now I have FeO2.
Then I melted this and I got pure Iron metal.
This is something I wanted to do for a looooong time.
I did the same with copper but different method.
Also did it with gold but I got that from PCBs and other stuff with gold using very different method.
Its awesome to turn metal into chloride and then back to metal.13
Feck I hate public transports. Rude people everywhere.
When the train arrives, everybody is pushing themselves at the door, not letting people stepping outside properly, then they lay their filthy shoes on the seats, contributing to the cancerness of the place, they cackle like hens, so I have to put super high volume on my headset, bringing some dark looks from other peasants because I listen to metal, but fuck them, and when finally you arrive, with nearly all the people standing up since 15 minutes ago because they want to go off first, some fucker in front of you steps down, with his luggage, and STOPS right there to open his handle so you're sure to bump in his ass, he turns to you expecting YOU to apologize when the fucker took the whole place for himself, I give him a mean look with my metal chaos pissing from my ears, and venture off to bump in a girl who was standing in the FUCKING way again checking out where she had to go. ARGH.7
I've noticed something odd lately.. every time I mention mains electricity in certain EE forums, people tend to go "you are a madman for wanting to use that 🤨".
To which I think in my head, sure it's a dangerous thing, after all the angry pixies that dance back and forth are kind of angry (120V) or actually insane (230V) depending on where you live.. but to mindlessly tell people to not use it at all, as an electronics engineer.. what's up with that?
I mean, it's a matter of respecting its power, right. So whenever I work with it, thick gloves, keeping my exposed lines as tiny as possible, keeping them around for as short as possible, properly insulating anything permanent, and even asking my landlord to install a defibrillator for when things still go horribly wrong (to which she agreed because it'd be useful to the other residents as well, yay 😁) are kinda mandatory.
And that's for the same reason essentially that precautions are taken when climbing a mountain by having climbing shoes, connecting yourself to pikes jammed into the mountain over a strong metal wire in case things go wrong, etc etc. And for the same reason that you don't climb a ladder in high heels and so on. Obvious, right.
Point is, inexperienced people indeed shouldn't be working with mains AC at all and that's the reason that I've avoided it in the first year or 2 of learning about electronics. But mindlessly telling people in EE forums that they're a redneck for working with the imminently lethal AC.. what's up with that?
Maybe I should just go find another electronics forum like the EEVblog forums over some random (kinda dead) electronics chat on Telegram though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯13
So a couple months ago we gave up on cloud hosting and switched to bare metal. Aside from the hardware we have in colo at a local datacenter we also kept 4 racks off prod at the office. Then everyone stopped going to the office due to this covid circus, except for a couple “sysadmins” who would take shifts monitoring stuff, making sure everything works fine so all those people working remote could do their jobs properly.
Now a couple weeks ago some weird shit started happening, like some service would stop for like a minute at 4am and I’d get a quick alert, and other random crap, no logs or anything, really strange.
Turns out one of the guys (made in india, rather fresh import) was stealing hardware. He would stop a machine, pull out some ram sticks or a cpu or a couple ssds the put it back on in a minute.
So far about $8k worth of shit is missing and that’s what I could figure out remotely.
Tomorrow between their shifts I have to go there and run a check on all the hardware and figure out what to do next.
The IP he might have taken with the drives is worth somewhere in the mid 8 figures.
The guy has paperwork so he can’t exactly get kneecapped or fall from the 12th floor by accident.
Talk with a co-worker who has a bit of a motivational problem.
Him: if I had more fun, I would be more productive.
Me: you're not here for fun, that's why they pay us.
Him: how are you motivated?
Me: by money.
A bit later.
Him: do you plan for retirement some day?
Me: no. By then, there won't be retirement anymore. We will eat fried rats in the street.
He starts understanding why I'm wearing black metal shirts.10
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22
Do you guys dream about programming?
Tonight I was dreaming that I was building a client for some API and suddenly it started responding with 500 and then sent me a 50X "metal sound" (I don't remember the actual number), that meant the server was doing noises because of a mechanical failure.
I thought it was cool (because metal 🤘), until I realised the server was running on my laptop.
I started panicking and then woke up.4
Me: *cover both ears with headphones, start listening to vicious metal, look angry, busy and determined*
Co-workers: "Oh hey! I need to understand ____"
Me: *place headphones on one ear, listen to gentle, approachable music at low volume with smile on face*
Co-workers: *crickets for hours*
Me: Fucking seriously? *commence Scenario 1*
My current favourite music genre.
I've listened to rock, metal, general top40 music and so on but when I listen to a good rawstyle mix, I get into a very high/hyper concentration state.
I haven't had that with any other music genre.
Currently looking into producing it myself.10
Coding and refactoring...
METALLICA COMING TO AUSTRALIA 🤘🤘🤘
Forgot what I was doing... But I know what I will be doing next week... GETTING THOSE VIP TICKETS 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘2
I might actually quit. I'm within weeks (Army-stupidity pending) of working remote and not having to interact with my boss face to face, and I might quit.
2 week long call, everything I suggested was turned down/dismissed by him. Turns out, the second thing I suggested may have resolved the issue... After he decided he was going to take over the call.
While I was on the call, he ran the coffee maker, the kettle, banged his dishes around in the metal sink, and honestly tried to create as much noise as humanly possible, as he does for all my calls. I have multiple signs up requesting people be considerate.
He works for a different company, so I can't call HR, and I'm at the end of my patience.3
Been wearing sunglasses to the office for a few months now because I'm sick of bright screens, light themes of co-workers, the daylight outside that shines through the windows (I moved to another desk further away from the windows), the ceiling lights that are always on (even when there's daylight from outside, thanks boss) and people expecting me to have my eyes open in meetings when there's nothing to look at so now I can just close them and switch to "standby" while I'm still listening.
I am a devampire.7
"Time to listen to some music"
* Puts on headphones and searches my favorite death metal *
* No sound *
"Silly me, I muted it"
* Unmute *
* 108% death metal brainfucking me from both ears *
I think I lost 5 years worth of hearing this instant4
Fuck air line companies.
They always lose your shit.
Like Ensiferum here. Airlines lost their shit so they they have to play acoustic.
Acoustic most pit motherfuckers. That's right. Acoustic. Most pit.
Fucking metal! 🤘11
Since fucking when did "bare metal" mean just running on an OS?? At a conference and literally everyone is like "we got kubernetes running on bare metal", got super excited for a bit because just the idea of that sounds amazing but they're using it as slang for "basically not in a container or vm."
Nothing exciting at all. Now we're patting ourselves on the back for getting software working without it being preconfigured as a container or a VM image. No one knows how to do anything any more. MUCH too much abstraction going on.
I guess it keeps me more employable, but the state of the world from a developer standpoint is just sad.
(For reference, this is what the first sentence of "Bare Metal" looks like on wikipedia "In computer science, bare machine (or bare metal) refers to a computer executing instructions directly on logic hardware without an intervening operating system.")4
My security knowledge is so bad. But I don't know where should I start.😖
My coworkers know about this, so I don't get involved on related topics.🤤
Last time I asked same question, someone gave me link, and it all about DIY welding metal tubes into a security door.🤦♂️
Any better suggestion?13
So a coworker made a backup script that asynchronously copies the backup to the remote backup space and then deletes the backup:
scp backup.tgz remote: &
Spot the bullshit.2
What music do you listen to while programming?
-Anything in the YouTube channel "Traditional Music Channel"
-North korean/Soviet/Prussian marching music
-Roki vulovic, Asim bajric, Ceca, Tarkan
-Tuvan Throat Singing
-Video Games/Movie/TV show soundtracks60
Look im all for conservation and helping the environment and shit, but why can't people do it without being self righteous cunts? Like seriously.
I just saw an ad on Instagram of someone getting a drink and they're all "I don't need a straw hue hue hue" and then proceed to drink from a metal straw shit.
THE WHOLE FUCKING CUP IS PLASTIC.
Stop being a self righteous cunt if you're gonna do contradictory shit like that. Like seriously. You using a metal straw ain't changing shit whenever you've got a whole ass cup that's plastic and that you're gonna throw into a trash can.9
Arch Rice Update
Distro: Arch Linux
Browser: qutebrowser with my GitHub open
Vim: Open with Python code, taglist, powerline and gruvbox color scheme
Terminal: st, Luke Smith's build
Neomutt, configured by mutt-wizard
Vifm, with ripped CDs and projects open
Qutebrowser means I can finally abandon my mouse/trackpad (except for pesky video ediors and music notation software). Nice feeling not having to drag my fingers over a piece of metal. Try it out!

People telling me what to do. I am 19 yo. I havent got into university, i have passed the bachelor's degree exam with 83.5% in computer science, i am employed in web development and i like it. Im not even thinking about going to university for now, not even getting a driving license, the stress is too big for now. I love traveling by bike. I enjoy listening to heavy metal and hard rock and I love peace more and i enjoy talking with people.
The biggest hurdle is people who tell me "do that because everyone does". And I'm not talking about my mom. She supported me everytime. I'm talking about people who doesn't belive in someone's knowledge and bothers the others. It's good if you give me advice and talk with me about it, but never be strict about that advice.6
Doing occasional first & second level support besides my actual job of coding can be fucking annoying and time consuming.
Just let me code in peace and listen to doom metal!
"Blabla our 17 years old plotter does not respond blabla fix it please"
"My computer is so slow, make it faster"
Go die in your filthy office chairs by being pierced through the stinking butthole you ignorant endoplasmatische retikula!1
I went to get groceries yesterday, and it was raining but not hard. No big deal.
So when I pull back into the parking lot at my apartment complex, a large metal object catches my eyes.
"Holy shit I think that's a computer! I better run grab it and get inside to see if I can salvage anything!!"
So I park and run over to it. I get a few yards away from it and see what it actually was..... Someone's nasty ass broken microwave.
I got so excited and it all came crashing down after a few seconds9
Your favourite coffee type.
I think it would be a nice theme to discuss.
Because it is our energy source. :p21
Client wanted to send us e-mail addresses.
Client sent an image inside a Word document showing a list of e-mail addresses.
Luckily ShareX has an OCR feature.1
So my company was building a software to allow users to use a screen without the screen being touch itself.
It was made using a camera above the screen and then with openCV detect where the hand was.
Anyway I had to test it on the place.
And the place was a factory where they did produce pipes.
It's the biggest company in my city, and yet I was there, in the break room, coding a raspberry in winter in a factory.
The only source of heat was the fire used to melt the metal
That was literally awesome2
Just realized I can only be productive while listening to metal...otherwise I procrastinate the hell out of every second... Wtf?
Looks like its full music from now on :)5
When your co-worker thinks the Onion is a legit publication and believes in all its tech news 😁
"OMG Google puts metal chips in their developers' heads, thats why they are so efficient"

"Artificial intelligence is real and it has taken over the world, all world leaders are bots"
Me: ok :|
"Obama is not a real person but a robot and he is not just ruling America but the world"
Me: sweet :|
"Even Lisa Ann is not real"
Me: FUCK YOU, Dont fuckin kill my wet dreams6
How the duck do those girls (co-interns) get to play shitty songs annoyingly loudly on speakers while we're trying to do important work and nobody says anything??
If that's the case, then I'll start blasting heavy metal at the same time 😎🤘 and see who gets annoyed..
That would be a good showdown 😈4
//Kind of not a rant. IDK what it is.
Yeasterday i spent almost all day building a 3D printer to perfection. (TEVO Tarantula PRO)
By that i mean all axis are exactly 90 degress.
Not 90.1. 90.
And good lord it payed out.
IDK how they managed to make metal printer for 188Euro but well they did and it prints as good as PRUSA.
I started print after calibration and it is near perfection. Other then salmon skin effect which i will fix with new drivers TMC2208 ofcourse.
Now it will be really perfect printer. Oh and i can print BIG things now.
235x235x250mm is a lot.9
Yesterday I did some experiments with my lab bench power supply to see if everything was working as it should, and whether my newly acquired laptop (old business laptop from 2004) would still power up. Noticed that it did, and left the thing charging for a while - its battery was completely drained. But after letting it sit for a few hours, one of my switches wouldn't turn off anymore.
The lab bench power supply has a 250V 2.5A (625W) rated switch on the AC side, connected to a 50V 10A (500W) AC-DC power supply. The DC side of that is then connected to 2 DPS5005 units, of which one was driving 50W of power into the laptop.
The experiment went reasonably well, the AC-DC power supply was loud but stayed cool like a cucumber. The switch however wouldn't turn off anymore after a few hours. Today I've desoldered that and put on a new one, and did a failure analysis. Turns out that it was a rocker switch (so there's a little nub in there that moves a piece of metal back and forth) and that the contacts of the switch (the piece of metal and the inside of the connector piece) were welded together.
However, the only thing that I know of that causes this welding is when loads are switched off, and an arc is generated. This wasn't the case here - it was just kept on for a couple of hours, with (accounting for power losses across the circuits) 80W going through it at most. I never expected that to cause a weld. Any clue as to why this happened? It really boggles my mind, and I don't want the switch that's currently in there to face the same fate.12
Sometimes I wish I could work in an anechoic chamber, alone.
Big open offices can be a fucking pain in the butthole.
Phone ringing here, stupid chatter there, clattering keys and noisy Intel™ stock coolers.
Even 9 hours with over ear headphones, blasting a fresh breeze of technical death metal, can't cover up those distacting noisy cunts.
How do you cope with that?10
I think devRant could maybe have some kind of mascot or superhero!
I scribbled this guy attached here as an idea, but as others have brought up, we could also have a super duck (like the devRant cape duck but more special)!9
Okay so this is a very embarrassing story but I guess it's kinda funny so I thought I'd share it anyway.
I was playing a tabletennis game in VR and my opponent was a pretty chill guy who started blasting metal music. We were just casually vibing and then we started headbanging. Not a good idea with a VR headset on your head. There are two deep scratches right on my forehead now. Two perfect parallel lines.
I lost the game, and the smoothness of my forehead.
Okay kids, never headbang with a VR headset on, remember that.3
Shaving with an old-style safety razor just rocks - that metal thing consisting of three pieces where a slotted, double edged razor blade fits in. With the good Russian Astra Platinum blades at 10 cent per piece where a hundred piece pack lasts for years. The whole thing can be fully dismantled and cleaned.
I can't understand why people use this modern overpriced Gillette shit at 2 EUR per piece that you can't even clean, with debris stuck in-between that starts to rot if you use the blade block more than once. Must be brainwashing by ads. Even worse for women who pay 50% extra for the pink version of that unhygienic shit.
Oh, and real shaving soap with a real shaving brush and not the canned aerosol garbage that doesn't really work anyway.8
Hmm getting in the zone huh?
Well a good poop
Mug of hot coffee
2 chocolate biscuits
Big glass of water on standby
Headphones , spotify and my metal mix1
Repasted my laptop because i was having thermal issues. (But thats expected when you are building something pretty much all day.)
And GPU had thermal paste almost dry and CPU well that was for some fucking reason liquid still.
So i got the best thermal paste you can get without going metal.
And i will be damned.
It really does the job so much fucking better.
15C drop on gaming. Really good.
This is the way to go.
So if you have nitro 5 AMD ryzen 5 2500U version then repaste it from start as the one there is shit.
Just so much fucking better.9
I was fucking paused that some asshole made me spill my beer, but these crazy cabrones have a way to lift up anyone's mood. 🤘8
Company calling for support. Printer in machine room makes unusual noises. There are 5 loud 90 dB machine roads forming metal. And the first thing they hear through the hearing protection is....... a printer making silent squeaky noises...
So I have to work with this company at work, they claim to be super professional and they have some API stuff that a customer of us is dependant of.
Their API is a huge pile of bullshit and a big mixture of German / English terms and stuff, it's a mess to work with it.
Look at (the source code of) their website to see what I mean:
Personal project: I design and build single-board computers with old processors like Z80, 6502 etc when I'm not being too lazy. A few run CP/M. One that's been more interesting in terms of digging deeper has been an 80C188, for which I've written a BIOS (despite the chip's built-in peripherals and interrupts being at non-standard addresses) mostly in C, which it can use to boot DOS from an image file on an SD card (bit-banged off the UART chip with FatFs). (Yes it's slow, but so is a 5.25" floppy.)
Work: My first project at my current job. Not particularly exciting compared to some stuff on here, but it got me into making useful contributions to the open-source CRM we used at the time. Was building a basic extension to deal with duplicated organisation names. So learned CiviCRM fairly deeply, a bit of Drupal, a bit of PHP. It's a shame we don't use that system any more, the community was cool.7
I wanna meet the dumbass that decided it was a good idea to teach scratch, basic, java, or even python as a first programming language course in college.
I’m so sick of seeing developers out of with shitty code structure and practices, and absolutely no understanding of what is going on behind the scenes of the IDE when you push run.
In order to be a good engineer you MUST know the basics, the root level, bare bones, bare metal shit.
I fear the future, less and less software engineers are comming out of colleges, the majority today is script kiddies, and folks with some basic java experience.
Who the hell is going to be writing firmware in the future then?
It’s insane the lack of foundational skills these students get in college. If they would get a strong foundation in C, and C++ they can easily attack at problem in any language, but missing the foundation, and relying on IDEs.. you will never be-able to go from a knowing only a high level languages and scripts to Lower level problems.
RIP the future of Software Engineering
Welcome to the hell full of script kiddies28
when you find a tool or library that does exactly what you need, but it's not documented at all
or worse, when it's "cross-platform" but all the build/install steps are made assuming you're using a Mac
"brew install my-shiny-metal-ass"3
2 in 1
How I fucking hate people that are over apologetic, but don't actually learn anything out of it, maybe next time you do the same fucking mistake again, I'll shove a fucking spiked metal rod up your ass and twist it, so next time you sit down you seemingly still fucking feel it and remember to check beforehand to avoid the fucking issue, you fucking buffoon.
Another thing I'd stick a rusty crackneedle pipe up somebodys internals is "for each day late we will penalize 500$ from the budget" while the budget is like 2k, go fuck yourself and eat your cash, with your "30 day challenge" job, you fucking cumstain.3
Am I not allowed to listen to melodic instrumental rock/metal arrangement music, even though I just wanted to finish my job as soon as possible?
I remembered last Sunday when we had a dinner of our co-member's house where the neighbors music was so loud that it hurts their ears. I'm not being hypocrite because I do, too, love rock music. So when they talked about it, I zipped my mouth with innocent eyes and listened to their tattletale with my mind bursting, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR TALKING; I SIMPLY LOVE THE BACKGROUND MUSIC WHEN YOU TRY TO INFLUENCE THEIR NUTSHELLED BRAIN.4
Being lazy is ok.
But I believe there certainly is a special place in hell for people that use "transition: all" in CSS.2
What kind of music do you guys listen too when you're coding? I need recommendations!
I can't do anything with English lyrics (other languages are fine. As long as I don't understand the lyrics, it's not distracting), so I usually stick to instrumental like animals as leaders, polyphia, Chon, etc or German metal: Rammstein, oomph, wbtbwb, etc
Whatcha guys got?23
Seems like ORACLE doesn't know how to display the grave accent symbol on websites 🤔
Ugh, I hate when customers refuse to pay for staging systems but then randomly complain about stuff that's WIP and not working as expected yet ...
"Yes, sir, this house doesn't have a roof right now because the basement isn't done yet."2
Guess what my old Windows 8.1 laptop and a Nintendo 64 have in common?
Neither have a goddamn fan or a CMOS battery!!! I shit you not, I opened up my old windows 8.1 computer from like 2012 and it did not have a fan. Instead it had a large piece of metal connected to a CPU as a heatsink. It also never had a CMOS battery since the solder pads have never been used.7
So some client has their own server with their website that we made and maintain.
Recently they've revoked writing permissions for our user for whatever reason but expect us to change stuff.
This has been the case for a few weeks now and they still haven't given us writing permission back, but insist of us making the changes.1
!rant for any rock/metal fans,
Avenged Sevenfold just released a new concept album (the stage) about artificial intelligence. It includes a spoken word section in the last song by Neil deGrasse Tyson!1
The new MacBook Pro's front is NOT metal. It's made out of some plastic despite looking like brush metal.
I learnt this the hard way when i accidentally ran my keys across it and gave it a nasty scratch.
Every time i see it, i feel an irritable itch that i can't scratch.
Luckily, i have the perfect bandage.24
It cost me 6$ to have a big ass keyboard, that weighs a fuck ton thanx to the metal back plate, to have it couried 800km.
It cost 12$ to courier a fucking raspberry pi from the same city... what the actual fucking fuck. And to make it worse i had to pay double shipping cause i had to order the power supply from another site causr site A only had stock of pi's and site B only had stock of power supplies...
fuck my city needs more imported goods vendors6
I love hard rock, heavy metal, thrash metal... But I can't concentrate listening Metallica or Slayer. I used to study with electronic music, but really I don't like this music. Finally I found a solution. I'm listening videogames soundtracks like Diablo or Ocarina of Time and I feel better with myself.
What a nostalgic feeling!!!4
I got a project to "refactor" some shitty site. It was written in nativ php. The guy who wrote this is a moron.
The site is so unsecure that my dog could broke into it while barking at cats.
It's sooo unreadable and illogical.
Every time i look at the code i get sadder and sadder. And now i understand why so many people hate php..
**Jump in time**
After i planned the new logic. My boss told me i can't do any of this. Because they only need a new user lever..
Now i just stare at this pile of horse sh*t and rant about it.4
This will definitely trigger many but the truth regardless of how you feel is the greatest programmers are those who understand both the hardware level and software .. only then are you more than a dev or programmer.. you are an engineer...
I challenge the devs who dis believe to go out and learn to build circuits, write optimized, efficient bare metal code.: no sdk.. no api... no drivers ..remove the unneeded abstraction layers that have blinded you...build it yourself, expand your potential and understanding..
Not only will you become more valuable overall, but you will write better code as you are more conscious of performance and space and physics of the physical layer.
I’m not talking about Arduino or raspie
Those who stand strong that high level abstraction languages and use of third party apis is a sufficient sustainable platform of development are blind to reality.. the more people who only know those levels, the less people pushing the industry of the low level.., which is the foundation of everything in the industry.. without that low level software the high level abstractions and systems cannot run
Why did we have huge technology advancements from 70s to early 2000s.... because more people in our industry understood the hardware layer..: wrote the software at the less abstracted layers..
Yeah it takes longer todo things at that low level abstraction.. but good robust products that change the world and industry don’t take a few week or months to build.....
Take this with what you will... I’m just trying to open the eyes of the blind developers to the true nature and reality of our industry26
So last night a friend randomly found a raw not-yet-installed WordPress instance on a public domain that he found on a Facebook site (it was already linked for I don't know how long, but just not installed).
He told me about it and, being the guy I am, I signed up an account on some free MySQL hosting website, set up a database and used it for that WordPress site.
I then left a kind little note on the front page for the admin telling him that I just saved his ass since others could've done the same but posted racist shit or something and, also, told him not to use WordPress.
Even though I had no bad intentions, I used proxies and VPN connectsions because you never know how these people might react.
Hopefully they'll learn from it 😇
I broke the system!
This rant has the same tag twice, because I manually added the one that would be added by the category I chose 😏.
So apparently our windows domain admin now disabled screensavers.
I was always happy to return to my desk while looking at the pixel city screensaver I had and now it's just black.
I am mildly angered 😑8
When you're trying to publish your first Cordova app and the PlayStore release including signatures and stuff takes you 2.5 hours, while the AppStore release takes you 5 days (including getting a huge Mac on your desk, signing up a D.U.N.S. for your company, figuring out the signing/provisioning process and fixing CSS/JS exclusively for iOS).4
i have been working on a web-based game and this is my daily routine (also i listen to rock and metal)
college to home to coding
looks like theres a small bug
shouldnt take much time
maybe this can work
i am not the first with this bug *here i come stack*
dont do this to me stack... theres suppose to be a fix for it
*extreme head banging*
nope this not helping
F*** THIS SHIT
*rhythmic head banging*
oh god kill me

*high intensity screaming*
F*** you bug

(10 - 10:30) mom: when are you eating
*high pitch screaming*
i am leaving coding for sure now
its too late time to sleep
fml its late again, i am gonna miss the first lecture again
back to coding
A thousand year later...
Bug status: Still not fixed4
I currently work with a guy that constantly blurts out, "It's awful quiet over there."
This is intended for me to reply to when I'm in the middle of troubleshooting some code. I put both headphones over my ears, crank up some metal, and continue being quiet. I don't reward stupid behavior with a response.7
I am so sick of getting random alerts for basic shit that don't work, like redis or memcached or some stupid shit that's there and seems ok.
i am so going bare metal.2
Not tech related, but out of pure interest: Who else is into deathmetal, deathcore, slam death metal, black metal etc ? \m/21
How single tiny mistakes can ruin your day...
For those who don't know me (and I've been absent from social media, even DevR cause of a burn out) I'm not a developer as most here, my code Is Numeric Code (work with a CNC machine)
Like, I have to do corrections every day to compensate for my programmer mistakes...
-Today broke two tools because I'm so tired I forgot to make such corrections...
-Got fucked up by my boss cause of It
- worked to hard all week to push the work forward (everyone else is dependent on me, because I start most of the pieces from a block of metal), now I can't think straight... and get fucked because of some simple mistakes...
Colleges trow away pieces worth from 5000 euros to 50000 euros (and more) cause of distraction and he always picks on me, even for stuff that isn't my fault or my responsibility...
I love my job, my company, but sometimes...
BTW, if anyone is curious what a CNC machine does, check this out: https://youtube.com/watch/...
Its so awesome to work with such a machine... Mine has a 2,5m x 1,3m table and 5 tons maximum weight4
The whois service for the legacy top-level domain for Germany (.de) is one of the most fucked up things on the internet.
For years now they've restricted the whois service to notice you about their website information service (https://denic.de/en, you run a search and get information about the domain) which already cost you an unnecessary amount of time if you simply want to lookup something.
A while back they changed it so that you need to state whether you want to look it up fotr informative purposes or business purposes, then they changed it so that you need to supply a reason in a text box.
The new (GDPR) way is that you only get the connectivity status ("connect", "free") via whois and the nameservers on the website (without supplying a reason, which actually is an improvement). Everything this either is for executive authorities or the domain owner (by entering their mail address or zip code).
Germany - the land of "We can opt out of any standard because we can and since theaws changed we can also behave like dickbutts".
Adding the GDPR now only fed the trolls even more.7
Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.
Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.
I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...
Does anyone here know if there is some kind of documentary about that topic or did anyone here experience that first-hand?
It would be really interesting to see how that stuff worked back then 😊10
During our last Sprint Planning we have chosen to use internal codename Solid Snake for this period (yes, we change it every sprint).
Our Tech Lead likes to draw current name (adjective and animal name) on a whiteboard. As soon as new name has been voted down he refused to draw a new one because
He doesn't like Metal Gear series.
I'm not sure I want to work in this company anymore...5
Evening of wrestling, death metal and alcohol. Didn't think about development or work not even once. Evening of relaxing.1
I put together my first custom computer, was too cheap to buy a case for it, at the end I realized the "power button" is on the case itself!! Anyone else turn on a computer by manually using a metal object to connect the power pins :/3
FX [ Listens to music . . . ]
FX [ Notices some of the music is missing . . . ]
FX [ Fiddles with connector at back of Hi-Fi... ]
FX [ Missing music returns . . . ]
I know, you are going to say, go optical !
I did !
Then it stopped working..
So.. back to old fashioned metal wires and connectors.
Why can't we have connectors that work !
I've even screwed the damn unit to a piece of wood and the cable, so it can't easily move, and still, its in the wrong bloody place !!!
Oh I hear you, replace the Hi-Fi with a new one !
Well, I got another 2nd hand unit the exact same model off Ebay, and still the same problem !
Maybe I should do what my Russian friends do, just remove the connectors and wire direct !

At the turn of September, my mental health went really down hill.
I have always had problems getting to sleep and feeling that I don’t get enough sleep. So having a day without sleep didn’t feel so strange to me. Usually after that I have had great sleep, the next night not so much, and so. It is often a cycle of good and bad days / nights that gets triggered by too much stress probably.
This time I didn’t get to sleep the next night neither and I started getting really stressed about everything. I had psychosis-like symptoms. I super duper over-reacted to every stimuli and my head wasn’t in a good place.
I posted here about watching news and trying not to overreact and stress too much.
Then I posted almost a cry for help where explained the situation with politics and world news. I don’t get it either.
So I freaked out for no reason, and I just stressed more about the attention I got from devRant. Then I had a feeling that I’m being followed and thought that someone broke to my apartment. I was paranoid.
I left my home to calm down elsewhere. My dad’s and mom’s house. Didn’t help, and I ended up in hospital. Not too dramatic though. Just resting and trying out new medication.
Now it's better. I have the new medication and I'm having some health studies done on me so it won't happen again.2
If the whole office has to listen to "gon put on mah iron shirt and chase the devil out dis earth" on max volume in between pandora commercial one more day, I'm going to hack the sound system and play Norwegian death metal. Jah!4
Coding with some hardcore metal while my client employes run my food and coffee erands. Because then know you are a crazy mother fucker that needs to be concentraded1
I don't get much spam, but when I do, I rant about how badly those mails are crafted.
I mean, yeah, for non-devs or typical old people, those badly made Google fake mails (that use the old Google logo, the logo in Times New Roman or something) or ISP / phone company mails with malicious attachments may look good enough.
But, seriously, if I were a dev paid to create spam mails, they would look like the real deal, if I may say so myself, as I would actually put some effort in them.
What do you think? Wouldn't spam made by real developers like us be "better"?
Maybe send some examples from inside your junk box 🤔3
I have a Devrant tee shirt and stickers. Everyone knows I like 80s Rock and metal. I hope know figures out my identity. Never mind I don't care. I am freelancing.6
I love listening to music while coding, mainly metal/rock/classical
Comment with 10 tracks from your playlist .... Here are my 10
0. Disturbed - stricken
1. Tremonti - decay
2. Black label society - bored to tears
3. Ac/dc - back in black
4. Rolling Stones - paint it black
5. Gary Moore- still got the blues
6. Carcass - blind bleeding the blind
7. Alter bridge - metalingus
8. Fear factory - linch pin
9. Pantera - 5 minutes alone8
What music genre do you prefer listening to when coding?
I'm going with rock/metal, Linkin Park is love ❤️28
It promised full-blown CRDT functionality. So I decided to adopt it.
Disappointment number one: you have to use CouchDB, so your data model is under strict regulations now. Okay.
Disappointment number two: absolutely messed up hack required to restrict users from accessing other users’ data, otherwise you have to store all the user data in single collection. Not the most performant solution.
Disappointment number three: pagination is utter mess. Server-side timestamps are utter mess. ANY server-side logic is utter mess.
Just to set it to work, you need PouchDB itself, websocket adapter (otherwise only three simultaneous syncs), auth adapter (doesn’t work via sockets), which came out fucking large pile of bullshit at the frontend.
Disappointment number four, the final one: auth somehow works but it doesn’t set cookie. I don’t know how to get access.
GitHub user named Wohali, number one CouchDB specialist over there, doesn’t know that either.
It also doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox at all.
So, if you want to use PouchDB, bear that in mind:
1. CouchDB only
2. No server-side logic
3. Authorization is a mess
4. Error logs are mess too: “ERROR 83929629 broken pipe” means “out of disk space” in Erlang, the CouchDB language.
5. No hosting solutions. No backup solutions, no infrastructure around that at all. You are tied to bare metal VPS and Ansible.
6. Huge pile of bullshit at frontend. Doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox.8
I put the same song in a forever loop.
There are 3 stages each increasingly stronger! :
Level one: get lucky - daft punk
Level two: whiskey in a jar - Metallica cover
Level three: gangnam style - psy
I close all im, email and whatnot and code till exhaustion.
I normally listen to metal and classical music BTW.
Just discovered a band named Master Boot Record. All of their albums are execution files. It's kind of metal meets chip tunes actually pretty good, if you're into that kind of thing.
So a couple of days ago some sergeant shit for brains crashed into my parked car, consequently i'm now stuck getting the peasant wagon aka buses.
Today, mr cunt bus driver decides to crash into metal railings on my commute to work, leading to all the pre prepped meals in my bag to smash. My macbook and books were covered in chicken, rice and broccoli with the sweet fucking aroma of nando's chicken sauce (10/10 would recommend by the way).
Now, I'm not one to think about the existence of some fucking deities but if you do exist you're a fucking mouldy scrotum you cunt. What's next, get into work to find all the machines reverted back to windows you absolute dick drip.
For the sake of my humanity stay out of my way for the next week because I'm pretty sure people are going to start receiving swift kicks to the jaw.7
Got a new motherboard today, a Asus crosshair vi hero, AM4 for amd ryzen.
Bought is as broken / defective, it supposedly works except 2 ram slots should not get detected.
On a closer look, the story of water-damage didn't seem right.
Disassembled everything and took another look.
😲😨 "Is that solder tin? What the actual fuck?"
*Scratche it with tweezers
*"Supposed solder tin" becomes liquid and moves
😱 "The fuck that's liquid metal"
😵 Who the fuck sprinkles liquid metal all over a board?
😳Ryzen is solderd why the fuck should someone use liquid metal?
What the heck16
Every website we craft at work has some email substitution logic so that addresses you see on the site don't actually exist in the HTML source like that (you wouldn't find them in a format like "firstname.lastname@example.org").
Instead the @ and the period right before the TLD get replaced with something else (to prevent (dumb) spam bots from using that address and blast it with junk).
Some people replaced them with images in the past (ew), replaced the @ with "(at)" or other stuff.
I made it a habit to render the @ and . by replacing them with span tags which then get a ::before in CSS that contains "content: '@';", so that the @ is visible but is not actually inside the HTML source code.
The classes for these spans then have a random name (persistent for that website though). The first one was called "move-along-nothing-to-see-here", but then I started naming them after Star Wars quotes.
One website's @ class is called "that-s-no-moon" (Obi Wan), others are called "i-have-a-bad-feeling-about-this" (Han Solo), "powerful-you-have-become-the-dark-side-I-sense-in-you." (Yoda) and "these-are-not-the-droids-you-are-looking-for" (Obi Wan).12
Started to write a blues song about this depressing legacy code base, but then it turned into an emo song, and now it's very heavy metal.1
So I don't know if you guys have seen this, but I found a video on YouTube which casually explains HTML with Death Metal. 😂
So, this was about 6 years ago, I had a small HDD of only 80 gigs dedicated for projects code, models, textures etc.
I didn't use GitHub or anything as a backup.
One morning when I turned my pc on I could hear a metal on metal-ish sound, no idea what it was, when windows finally booted ... And I wanted to start coding again, the 80 gig HDD was unformated like brand new ...
Few hours later I gave up and opened the HDD, the arm fucked up the disk inside ... Rip
I started backing up my shit ever since
Sometimes norwegian black metal can come off as a fanboi intercepting a discussion about database technologies and which is better suited for different purposes...
wk142: geekiest non-dev activity
Definitely music production. Especially when using real instruments and capture their audio, so everything is quantized (i.e. fixed to time grid) and very tightly recorded. I make metal, 'tis a precise genre. For one riff it sometimes take 20 takes, since I record 4 times my guitar.
I've learned for the past 10 years how to compose, mix, masterize, but also learned how to sing, learned how to play the guitar, learned how to compose drums and using my keyboard to play drums (people are often surprised I can play double kicks @ 230 bpm) so that I can have a basic drum layer to further edit
Pretty geeky, not a common subject I talk to people about :D2
Ugh fuck living in Australia trying to buy tech, wanted to treat myself and get a Skagen falser smartwatch. Nope, but we ship to the US...
Always having to pay extra for the same product, pissed me off when people were complaining that $60 is too much for a AAA game and here we are sitting at base of $100.
Can people start realising other countries want tech as well?
Every other Smartwatch other than ticwatch aren't available in Australia, I just want something minimal and with a metal body, fuck companies man -,-5
My boss has been working in web development for roughly 10 years now.
supported in 😢
Putting every file, even SHADER CACHES (that huge cyan flower here (this illustration was made with "gource"), yes, every of those tiny little dots is a file) or even complete libraries into their git repository.2
Usually my problem is that my colleagues are too distracting.
I just put on headphones and play black metal or hypergrind.
The first is relaxing, the latter overloads my brain to release me of other distraction. It helps me to escape and keep only those things in mind that I actually need.4
I still remember the moment when I found out that there's something other than Internet Explorer ("The Internet program" back then for me), named Firefox (v2.7).
It was simple stuff like tabs that fascinated me, it's an experience similar to learning a second language and opening up your mind and understand the abstract idea of everything.1
I recently updated all the stuffs on my Raspberry Pi 3.
Now nano* occasionally NULs out files I edit 🤔
*best CLI editor ever, change my mind5
So the free WiFi at the Paris airport CDG bugged out for me earlier. Since it doesn't allow you to sign out, I had Schrodinger's WiFi as the login page said I'm connected but I wasn't (nothing worked).1
Anyone here worked a whole lot with low level programming?
I have always worked with high level languages like Python and C++, but I’ve also had an interest in working with embedded systems, real close to the metal.
Any directions on where I should go to start learning low level programming? Sites, languages, etc?
Appreciated devRant fam!😊14
1. Music. I am a Metal guy of many colors. So I enjoy "Dimmu Borgir" quite as much as "Amon Amarth", "Man'o'War", "Eskimo Callboy" and "Epica". I am really fond of the latter. But I also like medieval rock and metal like Harpyie or Ignis Fatuu.
2. Music. You may not believe it, but I also like western and country. (Comes from point number 4) My favorites are "High Valley" and "Jack Savoretti"
3. Music. When I owned an Amiga 4000 I made quite a lot of music. Mainly House, Trance, Progressive and Techno. I should pimp my collection of about 20k samples, but just don't find the time. As a software I was a buyer of DigiBooster Pro, nowadays I use MilkyTracker.
4. Line Dance. It is the best and greatest sport for programmers, trust me! 😁 Current favorite dances are "Sweet Hurt", "Dig Your Heels" and "Strong Bounds".
5. "Mass Effect Trilogy" and "Dragon Age Origins". I know more about those four titles than Wikia. 😉6
I really don't get why creators of already-suspicious looking software (and the related suspicious looking website) put terms like "NO VIRUS" or "100% free of malware" next to the download area.
I mean, why would that help anything?
(I understand those typical virustotal scan widgets though, those are fine)1
Dev rant needs to work more on their algos to show rants! Since I posted one bout php , every other rant I see is bout php now and I think I just shot in my feet with this rant 😂oh whatever.5
- Actually got the fuck out of bed this morning
- Fixed the RCA connector on the CRT I got from a friend (I got scared while discharging it but it turned out fine). Basically the metal piece that carries the signal through the connector was bent to hell and sticking out, so I desoldered it, bent it right again, put it in, and resoldered it.
- Went to taco bell twice within 8 hours
- Sat and talked with a couple friends for like 2 hours after school
- Met and briefly talked to a very cute girl that my friend introduced me to. She has colored hair (I REALLY like colored hair) and she vapes. So perfect girl for me.
- FINALLY FUCKING STARTED LAUNDRY
Things I didn't accomplish today:
- Working on the web page I posted about this morning
- Getting to school on time (ONE DAY I WILL)
- Staying in school once I was actually there (left during my 6th period to go to taco bell the second time, first time today was in the morning after I was already late to school cause they won't let me into class if I'm late)
- Fixing the boot errors on my laptop (sometimes when I boot it fucking freezes after flushing the journal, I've been trying to figure it out for a while but I have no fucking clue)
- Figuring out why my PS2 doesn't want to recognize controllers or memory cards (got a new motherboard and now it just isn't recognizing the controller/memory card, I feel like some of the traces broke at some point while it was apart??)1
Fucking amazon performance from Alestorm at Copenhell!!! 🤘
Anyone else enjoying the festival?6
Well fuck. This laptop was nice, then the hinges decided to remove themselves from the mount points. Also a metal side rail mananaged break as well...
Anyone have good suggestions for laptops? Prefer machines with a distro of Linux on it, but not afraid to install9
Working on something else. If I lose motivation in schooling or work, I go play with one of my cars or mess with an old small engine. When I realize I need money to restore the 48 year old car, I go back to playing with servers.
If I don't want to do anything I just read a book and/or listen to some music. Usually some metal, or rock, or bluegrass, or whatever else I feel like at the moment.
Today I almost burned my hand from touching my (metal) laptop
(Context: I left Rome: Total war running on it while it sat on a bed which meant the fans couldn't cool it and it was heating up because Rome: Total War
For you metal coders:
If you haven't heard this album yet it's worth a listen.1
My brain= processor
Your mouth= raw data
I only process the logic that comes out of your mouth and typecast it to my system's logic and try to fit you in one of my objects using a visitor pattern.if I need to create a new dynamic object , my system throws a "you are special" message.
How to fit a WiFi lightswitch..
Spend hours finding someone who actually makes one for 2 wire switches..
Wait 6 weeks for it to arrive..
Find out the switch is that little bit too big to fit where the old light switch was..
Bend metal box pieces out of the way, file, bend some more, break pieces off, file more..
It fits !
3mm of it doesn't fit..
Oh well, a good excuse to buy a finger plate to fill the gap up..
Pity you can't get a Science Fiction finger plate, something like Star Trek for example.. (Well, you can get USA ones, just not UK ones!)
Screws supplied are the wrong size and don't fit..
Good thing I've the old screws, but they need washers..
Trip to garage later..
It's pretty, has a nice little blue light when its on. (Comes with a warning about not to use without a bulb.. so what happens when the bulb blows ? luckily for me it feeds two lights, so the chances of both bulbs not working at once is..)
Haven't even began to approach the issue of how to program it, so I can say 'Computer lights' and they come on.
No doubt in a 2 years time I'll have it working..
Just as its warranty runs out. :-)
But cheaper to buy from:
Any other metal heads on here? If so, what have you been listening to? I've been obsessed with Mutoid Man's most recent album, War Moans, as well as Cult of Luna's Mariner3
That moment when you're connected to a server to adapt a setting in the SSH service config and it errors into your face when you attempt to reload it.

Hey @dfox, @trogus, the birds on the shoulder are super pimp, but would you be interested in making a parrot? You know, to go along with a Hawaiian shirt, an eye patch, and a pirate hat?
That'd be metal af \m/\m/13
To all the metal fans out there: anybody at Nova Rock in Austria? 🤗 I'm there since yesterday 9 AM... So may great bands are going to play here 👌 hope I'll get a good timeout from working 😃6
Problem of the day #2
Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe imbedded in concrete one foot deep.
How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe-laces, and your plastic water bottle filled with water, which does not fit into the pipe?12
Most days I'm in the office 2 hours before any of my other colleagues show up for work. So I turn up the music and just get to work ...
I hate it when those colleagues then come in and immediately make some snarky comments on my choice of music (which can be anything from Death metal to Vocal Trance and even Classical) but when asked what they'd prefer instead of my music, they can't/ won't come up with an alternative ...6
So today I found out why I couldn't SCP stuff to one of my servers for the last 6 months.
It was a fricking "echo" in the .bashrc script (well, in a script that got sourced in there).
@BindView Thank you for introducing Scaleway to me (don't remember which rant you commented on).
Their rates for bare metal servers are really attractive!3
Sometimes I really hate designers.
I was collecting the colors used in a new layout and this only the part with gray colors of what I've ended up with.
(I may just merge some of those, like 7 and 8. Also none of them are results of transparent shading, I made sure)5
My first job wasn't as good as i hoped to be.
I had to do a content update to a overly plugined worpress site.
But non of my collegues could give me the code for the site to actually do something. I only could use the wordpress admin page.
My colleagues had to use a shitty php framework which was developed by an other company. They were so stressed..
After i talked to them they told me that everyone wants to leave the company.
And the boss was an arrogant asshole.
I left after a weak.1
I think I got a problem... The standing desk extension I bought is 40kg.... But after carrying it up... Even with a pull cart and elevator... It feels too fcking heavy for my desktop... I have a feeling it's going to crack it in 2....
Any tips/ideas? Feels like I need to put a metal safe under it, in the middle now... To make sure it doesn't collapse too much...30
When customers start a project with your company and you're the one to create the software, then after a while the communication kind gets kind of placebo'd down until there is hardly any communication and your contact only replies to / mails you every 12 weeks or so and then after almost 1 year they urge you to get their shit done asap, telling you it'd better be done yesterday but you still lack information you asked for in one of your mails.
Fun fact: the record of them not responding was 20 weeks.
13.5 million steps on my little Fitbit Zip named Dino. Long walk last weekend and lost him. Backtracked a mile and found him. So happy. But car had run him over and crushed Dino. So sad.
Carefully operated on him and although his screen (face) was smashed he had one more synch (breath) in him with me holding his little metal prongs.
Gave him a little funeral. He will forever have a cherished spot in my sock drawer.
I went to the Fitbit store and Sally his little sister was born to carry on his legacy.
Does someone else have that too?
Sometimes at night when I'm creating something new (or adding to something) and I get into that zone when stuff suddenly works better than expected or when the thing I'm making is just awesome, I feel a need to turn on "evil" music, such as music with deep voiced male choirs, the soundtrack of Portal 2, some classic music like those evol geniuses in movies or comparable.
It just makes me feel like I'm gonna destroy the planet once my evil creation is done.
I just repasted my laptop CPU and GPU cause running CPU almost all day long at full blast at 60C isnt fantastic.
I noticed that kryonaut is really cheap for 5G package and so i went with it.
The shitty paste that acer put onto my laptop is pure shit.
I applied the kryonaut and CPU temps went down to 45C on full blast. Holy sweat jesus thats crazy.
Its not even liquid metal FFS.
I had to had fans at full blast in summer when gaming due to heat and thermal throttling. Now i dont need to even fucking care.
Lesson learnt is to always repaste the shitty paste OEM put onto CPU.12
At my workplace nobody wants to work to prestashop project, and whenever someone complete a task he instantly earns a *prestashop level* with his personal bedge. I'm the new one and after my first admin-backend-module I earned the level 1 with the first bedge: the sticker (photo as prove). P.S. I already hate prestashop, just after a week. P.P.S. the prestashop's master (prestaLV 7 or 8) had already earned the last badge:"the precious metal keychain".. is a little truck with the logo on it.. is as ugly as it sounds1
Every type of doctor is a different kind of debugger for the Human Operating System 🤔
They debug system services like "ear", "throat" and "poop".
Sometimes they even repair or take apart systems for different reasons!1
What music do you listen to while programming?
I personally listen to a lot of epic film music or metal, depending on my mood.14
Good metal (Dio, Maiden, Nightwish).
Something to drink, something to eat.
So apparently I cannot save my Google Maps "Less interested in ..." food place preferences when my selection includes "Vegan". 🤔8
Aside from simple programs I wrote by hand-transcribing code from the "Basic Training" section of 3-2-1 Contact magazine when I was a kid in the '80s, I would say the first project I ever undertook on my own that had a meaningful impact on others was when I joined a code migration team when I was 25. It was 2003.
We had a simple migration log that we would need to fill out when we performed any work. It was a spreadsheet, and because Excel is a festering chunk of infected cat shit, the network-shared file would more often than not be locked by the last person to have the file open. One night after getting prompted to open the document read-only again, I decided I'd had it.
I went to a used computer store and paid $75 out of pocket for an old beater, brought it back to the office, hooked it to the network, installed Lunar Linux on it, and built a simple web-based logging application that used a bash-generated flat file backend. Two days later, I had it working well enough to show it to the team, and they unanimously agreed to switch to it, rather than continue to shove Excel's jagged metal dick up our asses.
My boss asked me where I was hosting it, as such an application in company space would have certainly required his approval to procure. I showed him the completely unauthorized Linux machine(remember, this was 2003, when fortune 500 corporations, such as my employer, believed Ballmer's FUD-spew about Linux being a "virus" was real and not nonsense at all), and he didn't even hesitate to back me up and promise to tell the network security gestapo to fuck off if they ever came knocking. They never did.
I was later informed that the team continued to use the application for about five years after I left.
that Moment when u programming with headphones and listening to sweet sounds of Metal-/Hardcore... and your neighbours just WTF1
I am currently running a heavily modded version of Ubuntu 18.04. I remove gnome applications, installed xfce with sddm for my login manager, plus removed a bunch of their pre-installed applications. I mostly use AppImages and snaps for installations with occasionally using apt for packages I am too lazy to build or are not in snap form.
I have been contemplating switching to Arch/Antegros/Manjaro. Mostly because I am crazy and heard that I could get a performance boost and I like being more in control of my own software.
My question is this, does it make sense for me to switch distros? Also, I'd like to have a close to the metal Arch install, but last time I did that I got annoyed with configuring too much from the bare bone, took me like close to an hour of setup, it was not hard, just really tedious.... Is Antegros/Manjaro have options to be really close to the bare-metal? Is there maybe a really good install script that I can just tweak some basic settings for?5
Any DVORAK users here?
I don't really see myself willing to learn how to use it, but I'd really like to hear from people that adapted to it, when and how they use it and why!5
Am I the only one who needs to get in the zone to program efficiently? I need to listen to some rock / metal and be in my trousers at around midnight, then I can program for 6 hours straight without standing up. I feel like I need to stand up and walk every 30 minutes at work 😅1
I have never understood people ranting about how Linux is incompatible with their machines. Back in 2006 what ever machine I had tried Linux on was working better with it. More than that all the drivers were working out of the box and the only problem that could possibly happen was with graphics.
FF 10 years. I am using MacBook for some time now and I did no installation of Linux for couple of years now except on bare metal servers. And have just bought my sister a new hp envy. Nothing fucking works. Not even wifi. Installation is hanging and I do not fucking know why! Her previous computer had problems with wifi. If wifi is turned on you could not turn the fucking pc off. It would fucking freeze.
Well fuck my life :(9
!Rant (but for those few who keep on giving me upvotes)
First workout done today. How did it go? Really well. In fact, it went so well that I couldn't open the repurposed fire door (thick, heavy metal).
What are your suggestions for notebooks with metal /Aluminium cases?
My MacBook Air won’t live much longer and I wanna get away from apple.. however, a robust case is important to me..
Maybe a ZenBook?18
Hey devrant, what do y'all listen to when you're working? What gets you in the zone?
Personally, I listen to a lot of chiptunes, some Opeth, Black metal, 70's, and lately, a lot of Mega Drive. Awesome stuff, but it's admittedly a weird mix. Always looking to find new stuff to listen to.16
Whoever came up with the PSD2 can get fucked up their ass by all the cocks in the world combined.
Whoever fucked up the new security implementations so bad can get fucked up their ass by all the spiked, rusty, aids-contaminated metal poles in existance.
And whoever allowed all this to happen and approved it should take all the nukes in the world, shove them all up their worthless holes, and detonate them all at once.
Die in a fire.
Someone who's failing harder and harder every day to not lose faith in what little good there is in humanity.9
[off topic] (good thing this isn't stack overflow)
2.5 years ago I moved 35 minutes north of all my friends for a job and only see them about once a year now. I have a wife, kid and a few clients so spending time meeting new people has become a disability.
I have a bar near me that does board games and DnD n shit. I thought I would be able to pop in, make a few friends and play a few games of cards against humanity or something.
Nope. Even though I knew I was the coolest guy in the place (I'm a musician and up til a year ago played bass in rock/metal/90s bands ) , couldn't bring myself to talk to anyone or try to play any of the games. I sat at the bar on my phone, like a nerd.2
So to give you a feel for what evil, clusterfuck code it was in: this projects largest part was coded by a maniac, witty physicist confined in the factory for a month, intended as a 'provisional' solution of course it ran for years. The style was like C with a bit of classes.. and a big chunk of shared memory as a global mud of storage, communication and catastrophe. Optimistic or no locking of the memory between process barriers, arrays with self implemented boundary checks that would give you the zeroth element on failure and write an error log of which there were often dozens in the log. But if that sounds terrifying already, it is only baseline uneasyness which was largely surpassed by the shear mass of code, special units, undocumented madness. And I had like three month to write a simulator of the physical factory and sensors to feed that behemoth with the 'right' inputs. Still I don't know how I stood it through, but I resigned little time afterwards.
Well, lastly to the bug: there was some central map in that shared memory that hold like view of the central customer data. And somehow - maybe not that surprisingly giving the surrounding codebase - it sometimes got corrupted. Once in a month or two times a day. Tried to put in logging, more checks - but never really could pinpoint the problem... Till today I still get the haunting feeling of a luring memory corruption beneath my feet, if I get closer to the metal core of pure C.1
Sometimes my hatred for code is so.. overwhelming that I think I need a sabbatical or should even stop altogether.
Let's face it. All code sucks. Just on different levels.
Want to go all bare metal? Love low level bit fiddling. Well, have fun searching for concurrency, memory corruption bugs. Still feel confident? Get ulcers from large C/C++ code base already in production, where something in the shared memory, function pointer magic is not totally right?
So you strive for more clean abstractions, fancy the high level stuff? Well, can you make sense of gcc's template error messages, are you ready for the monad, leaving behind the mundane everyday programmers, who still wonders about the scope of x and xs?
Wherever you go. Isn't it a stinking shit pile of entropy, arbitrary human made conventions? You're just getting more familiar with them, so you don't question them, they become your second skin, you become proficient - congrats you're a member of the 1337.7
I casually solved a problem in some private code at work today that I didn't manage to fix the previous two evenings.
Then I forget to push the changes and remembered at home that I turned off my work computer which normally I never turn off so that I could TeamViewer into it (I don't have VPN
Wanted to work on that code this weekend 😒
(Well, we were in a "progession session" meeting right before leaving the office so I kind of forgot about it because of that)
So I just released a thing I've been working on for the past few days and I'm very glad that it's finally public!
It's a thing that you can use on your website to let the user choose which cookie they want to allow.
It's worth playing around with the cookie panel in your developer console of your browser on the example page, too!
I'd be glad to get some serious feedback and I hope it could be useful to someone out there. 😊
In the digital world, rather than turtles, it's syntactic sugar all the way down -- at least until you reach the metal; then it's just a sea of electrons.
I think I am really passionate bout programming and want to build something innovative but I need a fellow programmer to do it with. I am ready to put any kinda work in!1
Non satanic, sugar free, high pitched male voiced, positive Metal that won't let me leave the desk until having a back pain.
Honestly either an excess of headbanging or dabbing, whichever is most appropriate for the genre of music being played 😑
A new way appeared in my life.
Everything related to cars, metal and motor engines.
I may or may not have to dissapoint some people with it, but I am not going to be a dev I guess.
It was all fun and chill. Do not worry. I am not going to leave this awesome place haha, just felt like mentioning it. :)8
I hate those "simple DIY" instructables. Just had to build something I had to get. Found out one "simple DIY". It requires owning a power drill with a table mount. And a pipe threading machine. Yes, I surely have a drill mount for drilling thru some steel, I know how to use a CNC machine, and maybe have a little metal foundry in my flat. But hey, it's a DIY not 'go to nearest store and buy that friggin piece you need' so you should have prepared yourself for some difficulties.
It's not supposed to be easy!
I still wonder why the author not assumed everyone own a metal foundry, after all. It would be much easier for all of us.
And I ended using PCV, glue, and a spare bottle. Had to buy drill for glass, less than $3. Wasted few bottles to cut out what I wanted. Beer was quite good, thou.1
There is actually two ways I fix my motivation. Depends am I at home or at work.
- In work I pause for few minutes and listen some good music, usually some metal+dubstep (for ex. https://youtu.be/uSjaEHoi1_c) and it gives me quite lot motivation back, music has strange powers.
- And when I'm at home coding and have bad motivation then I start playing Piano. I started to play about 6 months ago it and I still suck so badly at it that when I play my self-respect falls apart and when I come back to code somehow it's easier to code and I feel like - "Ah at least I can code"
tl;dr: In work some metal dubstep, and at home piano
I hate moving parts in headphones... Why can't they atleast make them out of metal. I mean do you really need to make flimsy ass tech to make people buy more of it ? Well that gave me a good idea the headphone drivers and lads are still usable i might hook up a new headphones out metal !... Nah i will just buy a new one (god damn you companies and smart business policies you win again)2

Now I know :
Hacker wallpaper , motivational quotes, drinking dark coffee, listening to metal music, wearing black hoodies and other stuff like this ...
WON'T MAKE ME ANYTHING !
I feel like a dummy :/8
This is pre-dev but whatev. I got my cs degree from OSU. After I graduated I realized that I had to fill out a form (by hand) and a mail a 25$ check to them in order for them to send me my diploma. Naturally I never got around to ordering it. Then about 2 months post grad I get this package from OSU which I open up to find this freakin metal engraved business card holder and a letter congratulating me on my degree. A) business card holder??? B) why couldn't they just mail me my diploma instead -.-
I still haven't ordered my diploma yet2
Since this is a very serious, very important question, I'll tag ot correctly.
Glass vs metal desktop cases.
What songs gets you in the zone?
I listened to witcher soundtracks, celtic music , irish pub music , metal, power metal ( all of the popular bands ) , folk rock but I started to get bored of them . I’m opened to everything that sounds good15
!dev at all, but I just had to share it with someone. I know I'm quite late to the party here, but hey, I might not be the only one walking in darkness here...
Anyway! I just came over this cover of Sound of Silence by Disturbed. It fucking floored me! How the fuck is a man supposed to keep up his dogma induced stonewall when someone creates something so fucking beautiful? This cover is truly an epic recording of what was already an amazing song, but not something you'd play on repeat.
Add some metal to the mix and man...! I can't hear it enough... Drives the wife crazy :D
PS! Do watch the video, crank up the volume and relax. Oh, and use real speakers or a decent headset at least somewhat capable of tickling your spine :P
So I tried to fix an app today that we made for a client ...
It's a Cordova project that's basically jus a wrapper for a certain section of the client's website that's displayed inside an iframe inside said app (with a bit of additional CSS and such). It's all working fine.
The problem is, said scrolling effect inside said iframe does not work inside the iOS version of the app (does, however, when the content of the iframe is viewed (by just visiting the URL) inside Safari), instead, the iframe just scrolls back to top.
So after five and a half hours of depression, anger and rage, also some repetetive cursing towards Apple (just like every time something has to do with their awful products), my boss walks in, looks at me and says:
"I'd be fine with it, if I just had to manually scroll instead".
If it wasn't 5pm already (I usually go home at 6), I would've just left the room / gone home or gotten my salad from the fridge to have something to release my anger on.
Seriously though, what the fuck!?
There are contractors in office to take out garbage (devices, boxes etc) that we'd put away last week as part of spring cleaning
Now they're doing it on premises ...
Sound of metal, boxes, clutter, breaking this and that. This is quite annoying and hard to bear
And a freaking Monday, why can't they arrange shit over the weekend.
It's no noisy like a (scrap) kabadi shop.
sounds in the background
RRUUMBLE SCRUNCH SCRUUMBLE SCRUUUNCHH
Chrrrick chrrrick chrrrick chrrrrick
CHUMMA CHUMMA CHUMMA, HUFFT HUFFT FALUMP
gr gr k k grk
GRRRAKKA KKAKKAKKAKKAKKAKKAKK AKKAKKAKKAKK AKKAKKAKK AKKA KKAKKA AKK
Dark music plays ....
So actually on the note of my last rant. What music does everyone code to? I code to EDM, JPop, Vocaloid, old video game battle themes and Heavy Metal.
One Punch Man opening is a favorite when deadlines draw near.9
I've been playing a bit of fallout 4.... Now I kind of wish my computer den was a underground bunker with a massive metal gear door
With the vault number being 4041
- Discover new metal song or metal VGM like finding a hidden gem.
- Playing fast paced, hack/slash JRPG game even though I don't really good at it
Not sure if those are geeky 🙄2
Game-devs I have a question:
What's is a regular or recommend workflow when developing a game that has a good/elaborated background story.
Let's say you are developing a game like Metal Gear or Resident Evil.
Where does the writing of the story get in? At the beginning? Your write the whole story or at list the majority of it before putting the game together?
And what's the writing style for a videogame story? You write it like a book? Or is more specific for a game?
I mean, your character Jason meets a boss and fights it: do you write: "Jasons finds evil genius hideout and meets him" or instead "the player gets to the boss and the fight starts"?
Sorry for the long question.6
Woo time for a Chromebook rant against Samsung!
So they just 'revised' the Chromebook plus (Currently using v1 to write this) and I was intrigued because they ditched the Samsung made ARM chips for an intel CPU.... Buuuuuuuuuut... It's a fucking celeron... Of all fucking things to put in a half thousand dollar laptop, at least an m3 would be useful. Then I find out they are ditching the full metal body, it's heavier, thicker, same 3GB of RAM, ditching the 3:2 aspect ratio (Fucking why?!) and the 'upgraded' keyboard doesn't even have back lighting...
Ugh, makes me want a pixel book more, double the price and a million times the performance and quality -.-5
So I was installing ubuntu alongside windows in dual boot.
The installer had some problems while partitioning the disk, so I did it manually using GParted. Then the installer had some problems while installing GRUB.
Now I got to know that my windows partition has been corrupted and ubuntu isn't installing.
My fully functional laptop is now reduced to metal crap with no OS being able to boot. Fuck Ubunu. Fuck Linux. -_-4
So I wanted to check on an iOS app in my company's Apple account but ...
I don't know, this thing used to be a login.1
I've been using it to control my home PC desktop from remote for a few years now (booted PC via Wake-On-LAN, done stuff, shutdown). I started using Chrome Remote Desktop a while ago too, but its ports are blocked at work, so I had to rely on TV some more.
Recently TV more often told me that I was offline (but I wasn't) and more importantly they started blocking my connections due to "commercial usage" (it's my private shit, yo), so now I've moved on to RDP via SSH.
That really makes me feel relieved as I wanted to move away from it for a while now anyways and SSH tunnels also are the real shit.
Today was a good day.3
I wish it was easier to embed devRant avatars 🤔
I mean I know I could use the API to receive the avatar (haven't looked into it yet) or even scratch it off profile pages, but something like
would be much nicer I think 😋.
bunq, N26 or revolut? I am also a bit sceptical because of brexit - i am sure it would affect revolut. I don't like the pricing of n26 but the metal MasterCard looks sexy and I love the features of bunq.
Not sure which bank I should choose...
Has anyone here got some more info about those three mobile first banks?9
Have visual studio/android studio pre-opened and updated, grab coffee, comfy headset and put on some synthwave or metal.
An accompanying deadline looms overhead, but we try not to think about that.
Satan gives a death metal tutorial on bad HTML. (some curses so NSFW over speakers)
As a web developer with a client whom wants me to update their terrible page, i really needed this today.
I thought this cloud shit was supposed to be more affordable and easier to manage and so on so forth.
After all the drama in the last months we just finished moving all our shit to bare metal. The bill is half of what it used to be but now we have some 95%+ capacity in reserve and waaaay less time wasted on putting all services together. It feels just like getting in a 911 after 7 years spent in a fucking suzuki.
So fuck AWS, fuck Google cloud and even though I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, fuck IBM and Azure too!6
So I've tried to unsubscribe myself from a newsletter for the past two weeks ...
It's a service I used exactly once and apparently I got signed up for their newsletter somehow.
When I got the first mail two weeks ago, I clicked that unsubscribe button in the footer to get to their unsubscribe landingpage and hit that confirmation button.
It said something like "... within 24 hours ..." and I was okay with that, but I kept getting a newsletter / offer / whatever every single day for the following two weeks.
Today I figured out, why the unsubscription seemingly had no effect.
I used a GMail alias for that website, so my address contained a + character.
Apparently they just put that mail address into some unsubscribe link template without urlencoding it, so that + turned into a space and they attempted to unsubscribe some mail address with a space instead of a + ...
Remember kids, always urlencode stuff in URLs!
It should be at night (after 9/10pm; I work better at night anyway), headphones on, music blasting (heavy metal nowadays), alone, preferably no distractions, but now that I am at home for xmas holidays I have to be on the lookout for my parents calling me. When I go back to uni I can eliminate that variable from this equation and so I should be in the zone for longer. Hopefully 😅
My music tastes can vary a lot, I'm the kind of dude who has no problem listening classical music, rap, metal, 1930's music, electro swing, even some shitty commercial musics from time to time without any trouble.
I'm just leaving a pub in which I was supposed spending the night; going from Motorhead's Ace of Spades to some shitty nobody R'n'B so that plebian can dance to it, all while cranking the volume up is nothing but FUCKING HERESY
I decide to try a PCI network card to solve my network issues..
I go for an old Intel one, recommended for its works with everything approach.
Turn PC off, plug in card, oh wait, its a half height card.. no problem, take off the metal deelie and use blutak to hold it in place..
Turn PC on.
Boots fine, and into Windows 10 we go, and blank screen...
Now what.. ?18
! a programming moment
My ah-ha moment was when i got to know that I could play metal slug on it.
I had gotten a CD consisting of neo geo ROMs on it
and that was one of my best moments in life.
I had never thought that i would have an arcade machine at home
I even invited some friends over and showed them that I had Metal Slug on my computer.
I've started looking into stuffs like GraphQL and Linked Data (though I've used Micro Data before on websites) today and while fiddling with stuff, I found this handy tool:
I'm trying to create JSON-LD data and it's really helpful to have something validate my test data 🙂
Spilling the blood of the innocents, a daily portion of fetus goulash and of course code reviews, pairing, reading,..
So glad I decided to use Spring Boot... Love it's bean configuration for dependency injections... Also love the RowMapper interface that's used with the JdbcTemplate. No more redundant Exception handling over and over again and I can still get close to the metal with writing my own queries. DOPE.
me: this installation needs swap space on server
ops: we don't do swap space on AWS
me: ಠ_ಠ OK, what other solution can you provide me?
ops: here, use this real (bare metal) server we have
me: will it have all the same access and installed packages I had used on the AWS server?
ops: no, you need to create tickets for that
Did anyone see this guy's tweets yet?
Read them, they're especially interesting when put into the context of the current GitHub affairs.
A pair of good phones and a great music! Specially a good heavy metal or a even better classical music #spotifyinveins
Does anybody use SomaFm as their daily driver? It's an online curated radio service. They have a very interesting list of channels and each channel is curated. They have channels from metal to alt rock to electronica to trance to folk.
I have recently discovered them and loving it. Clementine has SomaFM in its list of internet services. That's how I discovered them.2
Is there a name for the equivalent of a full stack developer for embedded devices and/or bare metal PC?1
Let the dogs out, smoke a clove, watch some metal videos, have a eureka moment, go back inside and code.
So... According to this chart devs should not listen to heavy metal and punk...
This is a follow-up to a previous rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1303341
I found out that when I turn on the sink faucet on hot and let that running for a minute, I can shower with decent-ish temperatures again 🤔
... meanwhile even the cold water setting yields hot water because of the temperatures outside.
