-- How I succeeded turning a PHP/MYSQL app into Android app within a week --
Alright. So I wanted to grab your attention to what I'm about to write. If you are here just to read about the technologies I used, jump to bottom.
This is also a kind of rant; rant against the other fellow devs who demotivated me originally when I asked a question.
I'll not go in the details of my original question. Here's the link for those who are interested:
https://www.devrant.io/rants/366496
It's been days since I achieved what I wanted to but I thought someone might learn from my experience. So here it goes.
Why FREE?
Well, it was an important client. I worked on his website and he asked for an app for the same website and told me he won't be able to pay me anything for the app. I was, somewhat, under the impression that he might be testing me. If not, then I would end up learning something new. It wasn't a bad deal for me so I didn't hesitate to took it.
Within a week, I was able to pull the job and finish it. I felt so much better (and proud of myself) when I finished the app within the week and client approved it. What did I get? I got a GOOD BANK CLIENT in my pocket now. Got a lot more worth of projects from the same client. If I were being paid for the app, I might not have pulled the job so much better.
So the moral of this story is never to give up. NOT EVERY DEVELOPER SELLS SHORT ONLY FOR "MONEY". Some enjoy learning new things. And some like me love to accept new challenges and are not afraid to try something new everyday.
In case, someone is interested in knowing the technologies I used, here they go;
PhoneGap
Framework7
Template7
Apache Cordova
I wrote an API for the interaction between the web services and the app.
Also, Ionic Framework seems promising but it had a learning curve and time was of the essence. But I'm gonna learn it anyhow.14 -

I used to work in a small agency that did websites and Phonegap apps, and the senior developer was awful.
He had over a decade of experience, but it was the same year of experience over and over again. His PHP was full of bad practices:
- He'd never used an MVC framework at all, and was resistant to the idea, claiming he was too busy. Instead he did everything as PHP pages
- He didn't know how to use includes, and would instead duplicate the database connection settings. In EVERY SINGLE FILE.
- He routinely stored passwords in plain text until I pretty much forced him to use the new PHP password hashing API
- He sent login details as query strings in a GET request
- He couldn't use version control, and he couldn't deploy applications using anything other than FTP4 -
1. No more fucked up solutions like: React Native, Flutter, Xamarine, Phonegap, Ionic
2. Make XCode vanish and put a better IDE instead of it
3. Keep "the next bill gates" away from me, those who keep on saying: I have an idea its like Facebook but different8 -
How many here know surge.sh? it seems each time I mention it somewhere, nobody knows it, checks it out and thanks me. It basically allows you to host a static webpage on their servers - for free and with custom domain if you wish. They are also the creators of Cordova/Phonegap.3

It's nice when a great new idea you have is fairly easy to implement and works well.
My latest idea involves running my discord bot, written in nodejs off of my phone using a terminal app (that doesn't require rooting my phone).
Once I got a branch of the project with no voice support, I wrote a bash script in vim on my phone (an odd experience, I assure you) and ran it.
Things have been working well, far better than trying to use PhoneGap to build something that would run it.
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied, and it was a fun and relatively painless project! (thankfully)10 -
I was just asked to explore Ionic Framework any advise?
Please tell me I will not face hell doing an ionic app :(
I started reading docs and the word Cordova appears to be used a lot, I had a really bad experience with Cordova + PhoneGap, am I in trouble? am I going to regret life?10 -
Phonegap, when you are using the dev app: yeah nice seems to work fine
Phonegap, when you start the compiled app: welp time to run over my dick with a truck3 -
Was hired as a mobile dev / mobile web dev, was told my main project would be integrating a tool with phonegap.
... 13 months later I was never asked to download phonegap and was now writing server side java. Surprisingly I left that job -
Me:So you develop android app?
He:Yup
Me:How cool is Hotswapping in 2.0
He:No, I use Phonegap
Me: *walks off*2 -
Boss: We should port our internal finite element analysis software to an app. We could use phonegap!
Me: Sure... We'll look into that.
My mind: Nope. No. Never. Dear God. Why. Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts...2 -
Ionic
React Native
Mobile Angular
Xamarin
Onsen UI
Flutter
jQuery Mobile
Corona SDK
PhoneGap
Intel SDK
Kotlin Mobile...
I'm tired of this piece of shit!
Why are we hitting a nail with chainsaws?
If the hardware/os companies cannot come together to accept a single language, they can all go fuck themselves!!!13 -
Have to find a memory leak in a huge, legacy JS application that builds, renders and handles (most) of the basic logic for completing forms - that only works when compiled into a minified js and put in another application that builds into a phonegap based app.
Did I mention everything is bound to a G(lobal) namespace and the ViewModel/Controllers etc. all use JQuery and "this" references and .bind() everywhere?
Deadline of fix: end of today/early tomorrow.7 -
All I wanted to do was to create a quick cordova/phonegap app that uses external plugins - so I can't just preview it.
I ended up spending countless hours debugging why shit doesn't work through --log --verbose --debug, trying to avoid to install the monstrosity that is android studio and finally broke and installed it, fuck this shit.

Another post had to go for this. "I feel that's a lie [attached picture]".1 -
If ya ever feel frustrated as all fuck because that retard friend is too fucking dense to bundle a vue.js instead of pulling it from cdn for a fucking phonegap build.
0) get in yo car
1) find a bmw at a red lite
2) signal 4 race
3) floor dat shit and leave em in the dust bc bmws have no fucking launch control
Yall know who the fuck wrote this rant dontcha1 -
Had to create an App in unstable Phonegap (2012) for all 4 platforms,
for our biggest Dubai based client for a Tech Event, within A WEEK :/
Forget Phonegap, I didn't even know JavaScript back then :|
That was the shittiest App I have ever created, still somehow got an appreciation mail :|2 -
I've read that devRant is using javascript and the likes, what I'm wondering is how one uses javascript for android apps. I know PhoneGap exists, but I also read that there is some performance issues with it. what does devRant use?2

Wen I got my first Android phone I came across a make your own Android app ad with one of those "no programing experience needed drag and drop interface" I made a few news feed apps then got completely hooked, then I thought "I want to control everything within the app and not only drag and drop stuff" that thought changed my life.I started learning phonegap and started making Android apps with html5 ,put ADs on and published them to the play store.I then expanded my knowledge learnt Java, mysql, php, wordpress.

The only one I can talk about is my final project back in 2012 when getting my bachelors at Full Sail University. You can check it out on youtube its for Restaurants. Came out pretty nice and the app was all built in as an web app and using HTML, CSS, jQuery, PhoneGap, xCode. Its a good alternative way to develop mobile apps without being a native app (which I don't know native mobile).3

Aye, gonna throw this up here, does anyone have experience at building a mobile game with js (or tbh anything but unity). Right now we are thinking about phaserjs and wrapping it in phonegap app (i fucking hate the idea but its fine for a small game like this). But if there are better alternatives im open, for starter i have no idea how to fullscreen the canvas on this lol.8

Hi, I need some advice about android app development. I am a front end web developer and I want to get into android development. I have created a simple restaurant app using phonegap and knockoutjs but I didn't like the performance. Can you recommend how should I get into android development? Nativescript and ionic also lack performance as far as I have researched. Any help is appreciated.11
-
FUCK!!! Had my cordova app set up nicely in Phonegap build, and now something has updated in their platform (or the author of the broken plugin) which is breaking the whole compile!1
-
I have no idea how but its taken me years of wanting to make apps to discover phonegap?! My days of fumbling around in the bloated piece of trash that is android studio and never getting anything done are no more! WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS7
-
The fact that I am forced to use xCode more and more again, really gets me. I miss vsCode (especially monokai pro) a lot already, but the phonegap developer app simply doesn't work with things like touchid to preview the app.
-
Native Android Java/Kotlin I got covered but I need to go multi platform mobile. Your choice, why and why not?...
- React native
- Flutter
- Adobe Air
- phoneGap/Cordova
- Xamarin
- another?12 -
Any thoughts on Flutter ? I'm considering using it, but from what I've seen its use case is for performance, compared to other more mature frameworks like phonegap.
Flutter looks way easier to use though.
Anyone have experience with these ? -
Having not touched my cordova/phonegap project for so long, so many updates... removing and adding of plugins... Ohhh the pain! Errors, errors everywhere!1
-
Finally got a phonegap app to share location when the app is in the background. The plugin documentation no where says that you cant test it on the phonegap app and that you have actually install it in your phone to test the background location sharing.3

Anybody using PhoneGap?
I know that it isn't perfect, but for simple, rapid development it gets the job done.
Basically because (for me) takes out all the fuss of building the app.
Now that it is been discontinued I cannot feel but disappointed.2 -
I've been doing web dev for 3 years. Now, I want to do some mobile stuff. After I went through some internet resources, I decided to give Phonegap a chance.
Is it worthy my time?!7 -
So I have some android device experience as well as scala with Play framework and someone has asked if I can build them and android and iOS for their business. Mainly information with a few tools for using their companies methodologies. I have never created an iOS app before only Android.
So my question is what should I do, write both natively or do hybrid using PhoneGap or alike (recommendations welcome)3 -
Guys I need a chat with you over phonegap, have anyone here already configured in-app browser in phonegap?
I'm having trouble in google auth when using phone gap. I'm using firebase + cordova phonegap. One of the biggest problem How do I debug the phonegap app when running on my android phone?2 -
Advice needed.
Tell me the difference.
I know the technical difference between Native Android Development using Java and developing for android using cross platform frameworks like Cordova, Ionic, etc.
I am quite comfortable with Java, and am also not a web developer. Should I stick to learn android java more in depth or should I start learning frameworks like phonegap and ionic.
Seeking opinion from career and a professional perspective.3 -
Help, please.
I have an only HTML(CSS and JS) app. I want to put it in Play Store. How?
I saw somewhere Phonegap can convert HTML to apk, but if I do it, will it work well?
I mean, if I want to put google ads or any other ads can I choose where to put them?9 -
Guys i'm very confused for doing backend of phonegap. I have seen examples of phonegap app with php all by ajax requests and i have seen that we have sqllite plugin on phonegap too so is there ang way we can do backend without ajax as db is must in my app4

I need a cordova ios plugin for uploading files. The plugin "cordova-plugin-file" does not come up to the expectations. Please provide me with a link.
Thanks.1
