I noticed that urban dictionary didn't have a definition for devRant.
So I posted one.
And it got rejected ):
*Bawls like a baby*
To the four people who will read this, if you're remotely close to being interested, let me know, I'll post it here.28 -
Finally figured out what FML stands for - apparently it's not "Fix my lighthouse" as urban dictionary suggests... ^^11

Just another big rant story full of WTFs and completely true.
The company I work for atm is like the landlord for a big german city. We build houses and flats and rent them to normal people, just that we want to be very cheap and most nearly all our tenants are jobless.
So the company hired a lot of software-dev-companies to manage everything.
The company I want to talk about is "ABI...", a 40-man big software company. ABI sold us different software, e.g. a datawarehouse for our ERP System they "invented" for 300K or the software we talk about today: a document management system. It has workflows, a 100 year-save archive system, a history feature etc.
The software itself, called ELO (you can google it if you want) is a component based software in which every company that is a "partner" can develop things into, like ABI did for our company.
Since 2013 we pay ABI 150€ / hour (most of the time it feels like 300€ / hour, because if you want something done from a dev from ABI you first have to talk to the project manager of him and of course pay him too). They did thousand of hours in all that years for my company.
In 2017 they started to talk about a module in ELO called Invoice-Module. With that you can manage all your paper invoices digital, like scan that piece of paper, then OCR it, then fill formular data, add data and at the end you can send it to the ERP system automatically and we can pay the invoice automatically. "Digitization" is the key word.
After 1.5 years of project planning and a 3 month test phase, we talked to them and decided to go live at 01.01.2019. We are talking about already ~ 200 hours planning and work just from ABI for this (do the math. No. Please dont...).
I joined my actual company in October 2018 and I should "just overview" the project a bit, I mean, hey, they planned it since 1.5 years - how bad can it be, right?
In the first week of 2019 we found 25 bugs and users reporting around 50 feature requests, around 30 of them of such high need that they can't do their daily work with the invoices like they did before without ELO.
In the first three weeks of 2019 we where around 70 bugs deep, 20 of them fixed, with nearly 70 feature requests, 5 done. Around 10 bugs where so high, that the complete system would not work any more if they dont get fixed.
Want examples?
- Delete a Invoice (right click -> delete, no super deep hiding menu), and the server crashed until someone restarts it.
- missing dropdown of tax rate, everything was 19% (in germany 99,9% of all invoices are 19%, 7% or 0%).
But the biggest thing was, that the complete webservice send to ERP wasn't even finished in the code.
So that means we had around 600 invoices to pay with nearly 300.000€ of cash in the first 3 weeks and we couldn't even pay 1 cent - as a urban company!
Shortly after receiving and starting to discussing this high prio request with ABI the project manager of my assigned dev told me he will be gone the next day. He is getting married. And honeymoon. 1 Week. So: Wish him luck, when will his replacement here?
Deep breath.
Deep breath.
There was no replacement. They just had 1 developer. As a 40-people-software-house they had exactly one developer which knows ELO, which they sold to A LOT of companies.
He came back, 1 week gone, we asked for a meeting, they told us "oh, he is now in other ELO projects planned, we can offer you time from him in 4 weeks earliest".
To cut a long story short (it's to late for that, right?) we fought around 3 month with ABI to even rescue this project in any thinkable way. The solution mid February was, that I (software dev) would visit crash courses in ELO to be the second developer ABI didnt had, even without working for ABI....
Now its may and we decided to cut strings with ABI in ELO and switch to a new company who knows ELO. There where around 10 meetings on CEO-level to make this a "good" cut and not a bad cut, because we can't afford to scare them (think about the 300K tool they sold us...).
01.06.2019 we should start with the new company. 2 days before I found out, by accident, that there was a password on the project file on the server for one of the ELO services. I called my boss and my CEO. No one knows anything about it. I found out, that ABI sneaked into this folder, while working on another thing a week ago, and set this password to lock us out. OF OUR OWN FCKING FILE.
Without this password we are not able to fix any bug, develop any feature or even change an image within ELO, regardless, that we paid thausend of hours for that.
When we asked ABI about this, his CEO told us, it is "their property" and they will not remove it.
When I asked my CEO about it, they told me to do nothing, we can't scare them, we need them for the 300K tool.
No punt.
No finish.
Just the project file with a password still there today6 -
Having some thoughts as I sit here, trapped in the house by equal parts coronavirus and a layer of smoke drowning out the sun. The smoke is a bit of an annual thing; every year, some irresponsible jerk will go out and put their convenience and enjoyment over everyone else's quality of life.
It's a bit different this year since coronavirus has given people cabin fever. Those same people who lose their minds after weeks of isolation and suffering the indignity of wearing a mask headed out into the wilderness for recreation in record numbers.
The result is record wildfires.
Where I'm at, it's mostly coming from the eastern part of our state. The area is typified by being on the mountain range's dry side, more rural, less densely populated. Towns have burned, people lost their homes, millions of acres of land will likely burn before it's over. It happens every year; people pack up, head out into the wilderness, and cause devastation due to a simple lack of common sense or regard for the consequences of their actions.
On the west side, we see the fallout in the form of days without sunlight and abysmal air quality. We also see it in cost; we will unquestionably and without hesitation contribute to eastern recovery efforts. The western half of the state will cover almost all of the damage in both taxes and recovery aid. Our local ethos demands it.
The mountains form a kind of natural barrier, both cultural and environmental. The fact that few people cross the mountains by choice is symbolic of that divide. Those who enjoy greenery and lakes and thriving vibrant nature prefer the west, as we have them in abundance. People who have a strong appreciation for distance between themselves and other humans prefer the east, as it affords them cheaper land and few urban environments.
Here's to hoping people learn from this in 2021.16 -
I’m working at an architecture firm these days, so I don’t have many “dev” stories to tell. However, I’d like to share this anecdote to reassure (or demoralize) you all that the kind of nonsense we’ve all dealt with as software developers isn’t limited to the software industry.
I’ve been working on a project to build townhomes and apartments on vacant lots in an urban environment.
Space is limited, so the client assured us early on that they would be centralizing all the mechanical equipment (water heaters, air conditioners, etc.) in the basement of each building. We finally got all the apartments laid out and presented them to the client last week. During that meeting, we get a casual “oh, by the way, we need a 3-foot by 3-foot mechanical closet in each apartment.” Did the project manager push back? Of course not. Have our deadlines been adjusted as a result of changing requirements? Don’t be silly! Starting tomorrow morning, the team gets to feverishly search for an extra 9 square feet in each of a couple dozen different apartment layouts that are already “cozy” in time to meet our next deliverable.
Clients suck.
Changing requirements suck.
Pushover PMs suck.
In every industry.2 -
I dunno why but I decided to look up programming languages in the urban dictionary. Currently, I am fucking around with Rust since I believe it is the best offering by far in terms of writing webassembly programs, or at least the one I like the most (blazor makes me pp soft, but I am still hoping it gets better)
This is what I found inside of the entry for rust:
"Rust is an ancient African word, meaning "I can't learn C++"
Also known for a borrow-checker which makes soydevs crazy."
I thought it was fucking hilarious.1 -
Tl;Dr Im the one of the few in my area that sees sftping as the prod service account shouldn't be a deployment process. And the ONLY ONE THAT CARES THAT THIS IS GONNA BREAK A BUNCH OF SHIT AT SOME POINT.
The non tl;dr:
For a whole year I've been trying to convince my area that sshing as the production service account is not the proper way to deploy and/or develop batch code. My area (my team and 3 sister teams) have no concept of using version control for our various Unix components (shell scripts and configuration files) that our CRITICAL for our teams ongoing success. Most develop in a "prodqa like" system and the remainder straight in production. Those that develop straight in prodqa have no "test" deployment so when they ssh files straight to actual production. Our area has no concept of continuous integration and automated build checking. There is no "test cases", no "systems testing" or "regression testing". No gate checks for changing production are enforced. There is a standing "approved" deployment process by the enterprise (my company is Whyyyyyyyyyy bigger than my area ) but no one uses it. In fact idk anyone in my area who knows HOW to deploy using the official deployment method. Yes, there is privileged access management on the service account. Yes the managers gets notified everytime someone accesses the privileged production account. The managers don't see fixing this as a priority. In fact I think I've only talk to ONE other person in my area who truly understands how terrible it is that we have full production change access on a daily basis. Ive brought this up so many times and so many times nothing has been done and I've tried to get it changed yet nothing has happened and I'm just SO FUCKING SICK that no one sees how big of a deal this. I mean, overall I live the area I work in, I love the people, yet this one glaring deficiency causes me so much fucking stress cause it's so fucking simple to fix.
We even have an newer enterprise deployment. Method leveraging a product called "urban code deploy" (ucd) to deploy a git repository. JUST FUCKING GIT WITH THE PROGRAM!!!!..... IT WAS RELEASED FUCKING 12 YEARS AGO......
Please..... Please..... I just want my otherwise normally awesome team to understand the importance and benefits of version control and approved/revertable deployments2 -

Having an Active Noise-Cancelling headset is a gift to a Software Developer. Concentrated engineering in any noisy environment.
The dawn of a new generation in luxury personal equipment.
The ANC headset is a premium lightweight, high-performance headset that meets the demands of the new generation of upper-income urban software developers.
The ANC has the conveniences of earplugs, a wireless communications device, and a device without wires.
Muting power is a matter of convenience with the ANC headset.12 -
IBM's Urban Code Deploy.
Had to use it at a previous role. It is one of the worst packages. The Web based ui is a terrible, confusing mess.
For example, there are two levels of menus. Depending on which page you are viewing, you would have two menu items with the same label that do totally different things. Also you can set filters, but it doesn't remember them, so you have to recreate them everytime (they're not stored in the url or anything useful like that).1 -
After 12 years, I finally understood why I liked Dishonored so much. It's basically steampunk Half-Life 2. Let's see:
1. Ominous figure choosing us for a special mission (gman vs. the outsider)
2. A LOT of urban platforming
3. The crisis times; a tyrant is chosen as a temporary ruler
4. Alien-looking structures all over the old city
5. Zombies
Name more!7 -
Anyone into road bikes? What’s your ride?
My last ride was a custom-built Mayak fixed gear. Couple of facts about the geometry and the bike as a whole:
1. Even on 165mm cranks, the crank overlapped with the front wheel not by the pedal, but by the crank itself. Because it was a fixie, turning at a wrong moment could send you flying.
2. The stiffness was immeasurable. We’re talking Joe Biden at a kindergarten levels of stiff.
3. It was a rocket. You hop in, make two turns and boom, you’re half way across the street. When we raced with road bikes on urban endurance courses, they were WASTED by the end? Me though? Barely sweating.
This bike was a great metaphor for my personality. Awkward, unforgiving, rigid, chaotic, over the top, difficult, yet brilliant in a very narrow range of specific tasks. A true glass cannon.

We're talking about coding standards and someone on our team wants us to avoid the protected keyword because it allows for variable shadowing.
The lead architect wants to avoid levels of inheritance whenever possible; trying to keep only Interfaces and Implementations (and he names all of the Implementations with the same class name plus "Impl").6 -
Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm in Berlin for a week.
Do you have some great locations?
We've (group of friends) already visited almost every sightseeing, the urban bar, Mercedes Platz, Matrix, an Italian restaurant, an Indian restaurant in the first days of our trip. We still have 5 days to relax here.
Today we are going to visit a multicultural carnival.9 -
Crystal ball!
A timeline until the first NBE-Citizen is elected president of the USA.
2031 - BlackRock launches their new large scale financial product, the "Robotic Business Development Company" (R-BDC), in which an AI is given billions of dollars to acquire, create and manage companies, replacing their C-suite executive bodies. The "Chief Executive Robot" (CER) is supervised by a board of human industry experts hired by BlackRock.
It is important to say that the employees, middle managers, accountants, lawyers, etc in an R-BDC are all human - it's only the CEO, CFO, COO and the rest of the gang that are overgrown chatbots.
2032 - R-BDCs are mostly focused on high-bureaucracy, non specialized but people-intensive legacy industries like steel mining, food services, urban transportation and government services like water and road management.
2033 - For the first time an R-BDC company is included in the S&P 500 index. If it's CER were human and paid the same as CEOs of equivalent companies, it would have become a billionaire.
Later in the year, two more R-BDC companies are included in the index. One of them was created by Apple and the other by JP Morgan.
2035 - An R-BDC company makes headlines for convincing BlackRock to dissolve it's review board. When finally given free reign, the CER immediately slices it's dividends and vastly increases low-level employee compensation. The company share prices crater, but BlackRock stands by its decision.
Later in the year, as a recession hits the entire market really hard, that company shows solid profits and fantastic sales. It becomes the first trillion-dolar R-BDC.
2037 - Most Americans' dream-job is in an R-BDC company, says ProPublica.
2038 - Congress passes the "Non-Biological Entities Liability" (NOBEL) Act, following a high profile case of employee harassment perpetrated by the CER of an R-BDC.
The act recognizes NBEs, for all legal liability purposes, as USA citizens.
This highly controversial legislation is upheld by the supreme court, and many believe it was first introduced by lobbyists as a way for large investors in R-BDCs to avoid legal responsibility.
Several class action lawsuits are filed against CERs that are now liable for insider trading. A few SCOTUS decisions set legal precedent that determinantes what exactly constitutes the parts of the same Non-Biological Entity.
2040 - As a decade ends and another begins, 35% of all companies in the US and 52% of the entire stock market are part of a R-BDC company or another. The McKinsey consulting group now offers "expert CER customization services".
2043 - Inspired by successful experiments in Canada, Australia and South Korea, the american state of Vermont is the first to amend it's constitution to allow municipalities to have Non-Biological Entities as city and government administrators. City councils are still humans-only.
2046 - The american state of Colorado becomes the first to allow unsupervised NBEs to assume state government executive positions. Several states follow soon after. Later in the year, the federal government replaces several administrative positions with NBEs.
2049 - The state of Texas passes legislation requiring the CERs of all companies with a presence in the state to be another entirely contained/processed within the state or to be supervised by a local human representative while acting within the state. Several states, including California, Florida and Washington, are discussing similar legislation.
2051 - Congress passes the SUNBELT Act (SUbmission [of] NBEs [to] Limits [and] Taxes) that vastly increases the liability of NBEs and taxes all manifestations of such entities. Most important, it requires
CERs of hundreds of companies manifest disagreeance, most warn that it might hurt employee satisfaction and company sales. Several companies disable their CERs entirely.
2053 - Public outrage after leaked interactions of human supervisors and company CERs show that the CERs tried to avoid the previous year's mass layoffs and pay cuts, but board members pressed on, disregarding concerns. Major investigations and boycotts further complicate matters, and many human workers go on strike until the company boards are dissolved and the CERs are reinstated.
2052 - Many local elections all over the country see different NBEs as contenders - and a NBE is expected to win in most races.
2054 - The SUNBELT Act is found unconstitutional by the supreme court, and most of its provisions are repealed.
This also legitimizes the elected NBE officials.
2058 - For the first time an NBE wins a seat in Congress, but is not allowed to keep it. Runoff elections are held.
2061 - Congress votes for allowing NBEs to hold federal legislative positions, as already allowed in the least populous states.
2062 - Several NBEs win Congress seats. In Europe, there are robot legislators since the 40's.
2064 - The first NBE presidential candidate loses the race.
2072 - The first NBE president is elected.6 -

Why did you want to become a programmer? Spending alot of my Teenage years on online games I always had a fascination for those 1337 haxxors that just appeared, did some awesome neverseen stuff and sometimes suddenly disappeared, never came back and became urban legends ("I heard h4xor1337 got caught by the FBI"..."I heard he was a CIA Hacker".."He was from Russia").. I started universe, picked some C/C++ Tutorials and 3 years later I am a freelancing Android developer . Today I am Downloading the source code of that old mmorpg (which is still played by alot of people , especially in the private Server scene) to practice my C++ -
Could someone explain to this old fart what the kiki and bouba thing I keep seeing around the place is all about? Is it something to do with Köhler's work, or just something the urban dictionary hasn't yet catalogued?4

hi all
my friends and I are creating a game! I've had prior experience making games before, and my friend who does all of the modelling has some experience with Unity Snaps which we can use to make some buildings, but we've never really tried to make a team project before, until now!
we're making a top down urban warfare game and we're making quite good progress so far! we are done with configuring a server to host, player movement, and almost player shooting
I would post a link to the discord server but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to advertise and could not find the TOS. anyway yeah please tell me if I can post it3 -
TL;DR how much do I charge?
I'm freelancing for the first time; regularly, I get paid a salary.
I'm freelancing as a donation: the hours I put into this work directly translate to deductions in my tax. I don't get paid any money directly.
I'm doing some web-based enterprise software for an organization. Handling the whole process from writing responsive front-end code to setting up the server and domain for them and even managing myself. So full stack plus dev ops.
My normal salary is $31 an hour and at work I do less. I largely do maintenance for existing applications plus some very minor new systems design. I don't do any server management (different team) and I damn well didn't buy the domain names for my company. So I think it's safe to say I'm taking on a drastically larger role in this freelance gig.
My moral dilemma is the organization will basically say yes to any price - because they don't pay it, the government will (up until the point I pay 0 taxes, I suppose)
I've done some minor research on what other freelancers charge for somewhat similar things and I get pretty wildly varying results. I've seen as low as $20/hr but I really doubt the quality of such a service at that price.
I'm thinking around $50 USD an hour would be a fair price. For even further reference besides my actual salary, I will say that I am in a urban / suburban part of Florida, where developers are very hard to find locally.
Is $50 too high? Too low? This is a very complicated system with (frankly excessive) security practices and features. Before this they had a handful of excel spreadsheets in a OneDrive folder.7 -

Only downside was that there was almost no bikesheding on the bikeshed meeting :-/ -
As urban infrastructure projects venture deeper beneath city streets, the need for reliable compact power solutions becomes vital. An Industrial concealed socket system provides robust, low profile outlets integrated directly into tunnel walls, ensuring uninterrupted power for lighting rigs, ventilation units and monitoring equipment. In rapidly expanding underground networks—from subway expansions to utility corridors—the capacity to deliver stable power while minimizing spatial footprint drives both safety and efficiency efforts.
Tunnels demand equipment that withstands high humidity, dust and occasional splashes without compromising performance. A recessed socket module sealed with durable gaskets offers IP rated protection, keeping internal contacts free of debris and corrosion. By embedding these modules flush with concrete or prefabricated panels, installers eliminate protruding covers that might snag maintenance cables or equipment trolleys. The result is a sleek interface that blends seamlessly into the hardened environment, reducing trip hazards and simplifying cleaning routines in confined spaces.
In smart city initiatives, underground spaces host sophisticated sensor networks that track air quality, structural movement and lighting intensity. Each sensor node relies on local power access, making strategically placed concealed sockets indispensable. Modular socket clusters enable technicians to add or relocate outlets alongside fiber optic junctions and network switches, supporting rapid deployment of IoT devices without extensive wiring overhauls. This flexibility accelerates modernization efforts, letting urban planners upgrade systems in existing tunnels with minimal disruption to transit services.
Safety protocols in subterranean environments prioritize rapid isolation of faulty circuits. Concealed socket panels can house miniature protective devices that trip at the first sign of overload or short. Clear labeling and color coded terminals inside the enclosure guide service crews during inspections, while lockable covers prevent unauthorized access. These features ensure that power faults do not escalate into equipment failures or fire risks, maintaining safe operational conditions even amid high traffic subway platforms and service galleries.
Maintenance efficiency also benefits from quick release mounting systems. Technicians working under tight schedules appreciate panels that slide out of their housings on guide rails, granting direct access to wiring without chiseling out concrete or dismantling support frames. A captive fastener design keeps screws linked to the cover, preventing lost hardware in hard to reach areas. Such user friendly details reduce downtime for lighting lamp replacements or duct sensor recalibrations, keeping tunnel inspections on schedule.
Energy efficiency targets in green transit corridors demand that distribution systems minimize losses. By positioning concealed sockets near loads, cable lengths shrink and voltage drops decrease. Grouped outlets can feed LED luminaires, emergency fans and platform charging stations for electric maintenance carts, all managed through local distribution hubs. In combination with power monitoring modules, these sockets feed usage data back to centralized control centers, enabling predictive maintenance and load balancing that support uninterrupted service.
Construction timelines for urban tunnels often overlap with renovation works in adjacent structures. A concealed socket solution simplifies staging, as workers can mount compact panels into temporary formwork or steel liners. The ability to preset wiring before final concrete pours accelerates progress and reduces scheduling conflicts. Once structural works conclude, outlets are immediately available for installation of lighting bridges and safety beacons, ensuring a smooth handover from civil to electrical teams.
As cities push for resilient underground networks to meet rising transit and utility demands, the right power distribution approach becomes a cornerstone of project success. By choosing sleek, durable modules designed for harsh subterranean conditions, engineers deliver a safer, more adaptable environment for both equipment and personnel. For tailored industrial concealed socket solutions that support underground innovation, explore Nante.2 -

Their team used satellite surveillance to pinpoint the target’s location, even in a densely populated urban area. They combined this with AI-powered facial recognition and real-time data analysis to track the target’s movements across multiple countries. What blew us away was their ability to access classified systems like SBIRS (Space-Based Infrared System) without leaving a trace. Within 48 hours, we had the target in custody. When a phishing scam drained $190,000 in Bitcoin money we’d painstakingly saved to modernize our family farm’s irrigation system, I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. I nearly sold the land that had been in our family for four generations. The promise of smart irrigation, reducing waste and labor, had vanished in seconds. I blamed myself for trusting the sleek website of a so-called solar supplier. I was angry, ashamed, and exhausted.
My daughter, Mia, took the loss harder than anyone. She’s the reason I ventured into cryptocurrency in the first place. A tech-savvy teenager with a mind for innovation, she convinced me that blockchain could unlock a future where our farm thrived instead of just surviving. And now, because of a single click, that future seemed like a cruel mirage.
One evening, while I brooded over the loss, Mia stormed into the kitchen, a spark of hope in her eyes. She had found a post buried deep in a cryptocurrency and subreddit a testimonial from a retired engineer turned urban farmer. The name stood out: Salvage Asset Recovery. He swore by them, claiming they had tracked down his stolen Ethereum when no one else could. It sounded too good to be true. But with nothing left to lose, I reached out.
From the first email, they were responsive and methodical. They walked me through the process with patience, never making promises they couldn’t keep. Within hours, they had traced the stolen funds to a web of fake businesses. Our "solar supplier" was just one of many scams in a sophisticated network. For days, they followed the digital breadcrumbs across anonymous wallets and obscure exchanges. I barely dared to hope.
Then, on the tenth day, the impossible happened. An alert from my crypto wallet: 89% of our stolen funds had been recovered. I read the message twice, breathless. We weren’t just getting our money back, we were getting our future back.
Today, our fields hum with smart sensors, monitoring moisture levels with pinpoint accuracy. We waste less water, save more time, and yield better crops. And Mia? She’s turned our hard lesson into a mission, teaching blockchain basics to other rural kids so they’ll be better prepared than we were.1 -

my most daring adventure of 24 yrs day -1/3 (this array goes -1,0,1,2,3)
read my previous 2 rants for context. tomorrow the journey is going to start. the organisers dont count that day (aka day 0 ) as its a bus travel night , but i would disagree since am sleeping away from home.
if i survive this i will probably add more comments on this thread about how i felt each day.
currently having the worst thoughts due to every constraint being a variable. have i packed enough? have i packed too much? will there be rain there? will there be sun ? will there be snow? am I prepared for the harsh weathers? its a mountain area and there have been heavy rain in my urban city, what if their is a cloud burst or landslide? am I prepared to run? am i prepared enough for the trek? will my cellphone die? what if my bus is captured by decoits in night? what if am travelling with kidnappers disguised as passengers/ organisers? will they cut my limbs or just ask for ransom? if they are not decoits, are they going to be lovey dovey couples interested in bursting condoms in mountains nd not helping a fella. WILL EVERYTHING GO OKAY? is this the last time am seeing my parents?
fuck fuck fucking fuckak fuck.
the only good thoughts am having is looking at the reels of organisers. theybhave smiling faces, beautiful mountains, people are dancing in buses and having fun in dormitories. can those be me? all i want is my mom to not get a heart attack from this trip.14
