An entirely typical exchange at work:
PM: How long would it take to build an application that collates Gubblefluffs and exports them as a PDF?
ME: Hard to say. What’s a Gubblefluff?
PM: Nothing complex. Its basically an object with some stuff in.
ME: Erm, okay. So I’ll define a Gubblefluff object plus methods to add edit and delete, then for each Gubblefluff have it write a line to a PDF.
PM: It will need to email that PDF to somebody.
ME: Okay, cool. “Gubblefluffs-by-email” should take about a day.
6 hours later…
ME: I’ve done Gubblefluffs-to-pdf, I’m not clear on what’s in a Gubblefluff but I’ve made it flexible so it can take almost anything.
PM: No, a Gubblefluff can ONLY be one of 4 Snigglefingers plus a timestamp and some JSON.
ME: What? Right. Okay. What’s a Snigglefinger?
PM: (sighs) A Snigglefinger is the collection of relevant Babelsets.
ME: Babelsets?
PM: Yeah, a user can have any number of Babelsets but they must correspond to one of the four types of Snigglefingers.
ME: There are users!?
PM: Of course!
ME: But I’ve not coded anything for users.
PM: Shit. I’ve told the client they can have it today. How long to add in users?
ME: And Babelsets, and Snigglefingers and the new Gubblefluff rules?
PM: Yeah.
6 days later…
ME: This is done now. It’s a beast but it works. Who should it email the PDFs to?
PM: Client X, plus cc to Y and bcc to Z.
ME: What? It doesn't support CC and BCC!
1 hour later…
ME: This is done. I’ve tested it and sent you a copy of the PDF it generates.
PM: Okay thanks. Is the cron running daily?
ME: What cron?
…
ME: Okay, so the cron’s running once a day at 8pm.
PM: Oh, it’ll need to be at 3:15pm. That’s when we’ve told the client they’ll get it.
ME: Right. I’ll change it...
PM: Also, the PDF you sent me looks nothing like the visual.
ME: What visual?

The most unrealistic deadline? Okay, here it goes. For context, this is one of my earliest jobs, and I’m actively using React.
— Kiki, I have a stunning idea! Let’s build a Figma clone!
— Okaaaay, 🧐
— You have two days.
— A what?
— I’ve just stumbled upon an amazing new technology. You maybe don’t know it yet. It’s called React.js, and you totally can build a full Figma clone in two days using it!
— …
— It’s a revolution, and you’re so ignorant for not following it. Are you even a real engineer?
— …
Two days later:
— Forget about Figma! Let’s build an online DAW for musicians!
That guy was nuts. I left when we had an executive meeting, I was explaining tech things, and he suddenly popped out a fucking tambourine and started striking it. One year later, he lost everything and went to get a junior C++ position at an outsourcing company.9 -
I’m getting really tired of all these junior-turn-senior devs who can’t write simple code asking ChatGPT to solve everything for them.
I’m having to untangle everything from bizarre organization/flow to obvious gotchas / missed edge cases to ridiculously long math chains (that could be 1/10th the length), or — and I feel so dirty for this — resorting to asking ChatGPT wtf it was thinking when it obviously wrote some of these monstrosities. Which it gets wrong much of the time.
“ALL HAIL CHATGPT!” Proclaims the head of Engineering. “IT’S OUR PRODUCTIVITY SAVIOR! LEVERAGING AI WILL LET US OUTPERFORM THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY!”
Jesus fucking christ.30 -
Job hunting and interviewing disgusts me.
I feel like I am in some kind of dating nightmare (and I hate dating). It's really weird trying to sell yourself to some company and they judge you based on how you think, how you talk, how your professional life has been up until now. I also judge them based on my professional values.
It makes me feel really awkward to talk to people trying to sound all calm and professional when I am kind of dying of nihilism inside. Tired of having to get to the stages of interviews where I need to do some idiotic tech assessments that are irrelevant to the job spec. Some were fun though.
Thankfully no AI interviewer fuckery yet, but if I do run into such a thing, I'm gonna pull out and expose the company that does this.
Getting close to final stages with some places which seem decent enough to sell my time to, and salaries are so much higher than what I currently get paid (fuckin peanuts).
I just want to become a mushroom at this point.7 -
Who else is sick of generative AI being pushed into everything and techbros gloating about replacing software engineers? It's like they are excited about people losing their livelihoods and it's disgusting.4

Hey Google, please stop ignoring 3 out of 5 words in my search queries ever so often. I have been getting tired of the unhelpful note "missing: " followed by the most relevant parts of my question.
Can't wait for Microsoft to add openAI to Bing. While I'm more than sceptical about its use, at least it might end Google's quasi-monopoly in the search engine market and bring back some competition.7 -
Medium is a machine, albeit a broken machine, that somehow bot farmers manage to get the most shitty click bait titles up... and the content of said shitty articles (if you can even call it 'content' i.e. two sentence recycled slop designed for those with single digit to negative IQ) is even worse...
Dev.to has become a laundry list of "(X fucking shitting things that Y developers didn't know with Z) - I swear browsing yesterday I saw literally the SAME LLM shitted template like ("Here's 9 things that you NEED to learn in 2025) - they even both used the number 9... fucking christ
Reddit... not even an possible way to even get a foot in there, I don't even understand that platform...
And, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Hacker News is quickly reaching the same level too - just filled with clowns who don't even know what LLMs are, or what even fucking copilot agent mode is - and keep in mind these are the guys who are supposed to be making 300K a year because they are the "leaders in tech"? fuck off
I'm quite close to just quitting it all entirely, even you guys (sadly)... I haven't been on in forever but I can imagine the type of bigbrains who have since come and gone in my absence here...
I wanted to stake my claim and make my living here... but currently, if the internet isn't 'bad' enough since say 2015/2016 - it's going to get AT LEAST 100x worse - every platform has their fucking dumb ass social quirks and the moment you don't conform you're an outcast - if you can even make sense of why certain articles get more traffic than others in the first place. fucking backwards ass idiot machine, I swear
I'm gonna go have fun in the real world for the foreseeable future, have fun trying to 'make it' in this cesspool. jfc

I grew up in Russia. We don't use imperial units in any way, shape or form: we're fully metric. Every single person who taught me at school and whatnot was born and raised in Soviet Union that was also fully metric, and science was worshiped. We used to laugh at imperial units.
Given all that, I... don't hate imperial system. Inches, feet, miles, Fahrenheit degrees, gallons, all units based on human proportion. Just think where the word for "feet" came from.
Zero C is meh, nothing in particular. A hunge boils your blood kills you instantly. It's useless: it's a "shit ton of heat" in human scale.
Zero F is chilly, a hunge F is toasty. It's based around human perception. To me, there is no difference between 100 and 90 C, but the difference between 100 and 90 F is more perceptible, and thus more useful to a human being.
Same with every other unit. What's a gallon? A gallon is enough for an average Joe to get drunk, that's what a gallon is.
Where it all falls apart is when you're trying to create something. When you're trying to get some calculation going. When you're making — not consuming — you need your units to add up, e.g. to have the SYSTEM in place. Imperial system is not a system.
Imperial units are perfect for _consuming_ stuff: a gallon of milk, a pint of beer, a (real) footlong sandwich, a pound of meat. Six foot high dude with seven inch dick.
Metric units are indispensable when you're _making_ stuff, at any scale. That's the difference. Imperial units are the tool of consumption, metric system is the tool of creation.
Only the time units seem to be the same for everyone on earth right now. Time itself in its mercilessness gives the same treatment to all entities, doesn't matter if you're a human or a grain of sand.20 -

HR: So .. tell us .. where do you see our AI acting in 5 years?
ME: Doing your job minus the stupid questions.

How language creators choose the function to get the size of an array..

I needed to do some brainstorming for a starting point to connect Monday.com to some middleware so I can send assets in Monday.com to another server for providing status reports to non-Monday.com users. So, I fired up Anthropic Claude 3.7 Sonnet and asked it to give me some ideas of where to begin. It seems to have done really well stubbing out some starter code and a basic architecture for this system. Except for one thing. The system architecture diagram. Anyone know this language?3
