"Hey can you make these changes?"
*does absolutely nothing*
"That's way better!"
Mhmm sure. Totally changed stuff. Yup.1
6 months ago I sold everything, quit my job, gave up my apartment and left the country with my 11kg backpack. I booked a one way ticket to South America. I wanted to travel, get lost but also finish up some personal projects and do a little tech books challenge I came up with. I learnt so much over the past half a year, it's crazy.
Not looking back. Projects paid off and it turns out that my dream company actually found me themselves without me even applying... and so still from South America I'm in final rounds of the interview! 🤗
All my worries about a gap in CV, no employment along with other problems I thought I was gonna have... It's all BS. So if anyone here is waiting for a sign. Well, this is it now. Go!22
Worst 'advice' from a college recruiter:
"O you want to major in computer science? Well our school is fantastic for women in comp sci because WHEN they find it too difficult they can easily transition to graphic design. How do you feel about graphic design?"
I decided that school was a bad choice.
Graduating this year with my BS in Comp Sci and going for my Masters in Robotics. Screw that guy.19
First internship: accepted within two weeks, only got to do Google translating and fired after five weeks for bs reasons.
Second internship: accepted right after the interview. Rewrote websites to their newest cms, not that fun sometimes but alright.
Grade: pretty alright.
Third internship: was accepted without asking after a successful pilot program from my study. Designing and developing a huge back end system, done some smart light bulb hacking and get to solve server problems.
Grade: Great! Just one little thingy: they said I should stop doubting myself because "you're a great dude and programmer!"
It's getting better and better!3
I have this one friend who thinks he is a tech guru just because he plays video games a lot and started to study cs for one year. Now he got a job as sysadmin and it is funny to hear him brag about the job in front of non-tech people because he sounds like a CSI Cyber episode, just throwing tech words at the people and I know that he talks bullshit.
But I have to admit, he knows how to sell himself. Probably that's how he got the job in the first place because it cannot be his experience.
Yesterday he called me, to help him edit something on a linux server. I told him "To edit the file type 'vi FILENAME' and then you can edit. I have to go now, I have a meeting." :]23
A: "Hey let's move our server rack to this room tomorrow so we can set it up."
Me: "sure, 11:00?"
A: "11:00 it is"
Me: arrives 11:00, waits till 12:00.
A: arrives at 12:00 "sup man, sorry I'm late, let's do this"
Me: annoyance-level 6/10 "sure... let's go"
A: "hold on, this guy wants something"
Me: waits another 45 minutes.
I just went to cafeteria.
Fuck you, wasting almost 2h.
I stood up early for this bs.9
The university system is fucked.
I've been working in this industry for a few years now, but have been self taught for much longer. I'm only just starting college and I'm already angry.
What does a college degree really mean anymore? From some of the posts I've seen on devRant, it certainly doesn't ensure professional conduct, work ethic, or quality (shout out to the brave souls who deal with the lack of these daily). Companies should hire based on talent, not on a degree. Universities should focus more on real world applications or at least offer such programs for students interested in entering the workforce rather than research positions. A sizable chunk of universities' income (in the U.S. at least) comes from research and corporate sponsorships, and educating students is secondary to that. Nowadays education is treated as a business instead of a tool to create value in the world. That's what I signed up for, anyway - gaining the knowledge to create value in the world. And yet I along with many others feel so restricted, so bogged down with requirements, fees, shitty professors, and shitty university resources. There is so much knowledge out there that can be put to instant practical use - I am constantly shocked at the things left out of my college curriculum (lack of automated tests, version control, inadequate or inaccurate coverage of design patterns and philosophies) - things that are ABSOLUTELY essential to be successful in this career path.
It's wonderful that we eventually find the resources we need, or the motivation to develop essential skills, but it's sad that so many students in university lack proper direction through no fault of their own.
Fuck you, universities, for being so inflexible and consistently failing to serve your basic purpose - one of if not the most important purpose on this earth.
Fuck you, corporations, for hiring and paying based on degree. Fuck you, management, for being so ignorant about the industry you work in.
Fuck you, clients, who treat intelligent people like dirt, make unreasonable demands, pull some really shady shit, and perpetuate a damaging stereotype.
And fuck you to the developer who wrote my company's antipattern-filled, stringy-as-all hell codebase without comments. Just. Fuck you.17
Every teacher of every course ever:
"This will be the hardest course you've ever done"
"This will be the most fun course you've ever done"
"You will need to put in 40hrs to even get a sufficient mark"
hah! don't make me laugh!7
The collegue who I hang out with has resigned.. we together were known as the only Innovators of the project... Now suddenly My manager's behaviour towards has changed... He has started to treat me with real care as if Inam his son... 😂😂😂 The bastard is thinking I might resign as well 😏😏😏😏9
So a fucking friend of mine makes me meet this fella who is a big shot according to his LinkedIn and please note has too much experience with Web Apps and Python
Me being naive actually trusted that and I meet him.
Fella: So what do you do?
Me: I am into Cyber Security nothing much I just do bug hunting for now
Fella: You know python will help you right?
Fella: You see you have to be a python programmer for anything you want to do in CS
Me: Me yeah I kinda know python actually I am more into Ruby from start so ( Around this time I kinda sensed that he is a fake tech guy he is a corporate asshole)
Fella: show me any of your work
Me: (So to show him one of the thing I was working on I open GitHub desktop app) Me explaining blah blah blah
*Fella is in shock*
So at this point I was thinking probably he is impressed and that's why the shock right?
No a big fucking no
Apparently he never heard about GitHub or git and got blown away by the interface.
And the friend who made me meet that guy is not my fucking friend anymore that prick can die for ruining my day18
Don't BS your managers or peers about your understanding of a topic.
It is okay to not know something. It is not okay to pretend that you do.3
This was at my first internship (was fired later for other bs reasons).
They got me as a programming intern but very soon I felt very conflicted with multiple things:
1. Got to google translate their internal CRM into five languages. After two weeks (the estimate I gave them) I discovered that I overlooked the second half, apologized and got a whole shitstorm at my face.
2. Was only allowed to use Internet Explorer for everything *cry face*.
3. Saw multiple security flaws in their main product, told my boss (also my internship manager) about it because hey, I'm security oriented and it might help them. Next day he called me into his office and I got a huge speech about who the fuck I am to criticize their product and that I was a security wannabee who doesn't know shit.
4. Boss came home after a product presentation went sideways. The interns didn't have anything to do with that but he called (or, yelled big time) us every dirty word he could think of and blamed us.
Luckily I was fired after like five weeks. I literally cried of happiness when I walked home. I was too shy to stand up for myself by that time (even only 2-3 years ago)14
programming class sucks today so I drew something while actually maintaining stuff as my teacher spews BS12
There used to be a CLI utility for ordering dominoes pizza online, and I wrote a patch for it to have a .pizzarc and read entropy from standard in and randomize not only the size and contents of your pizza but how many of them you wanted to order in case you couldn’t make up your mind.
So you could do “dd if=/dev/urandom bs=1M count=1 | pizza -“ and it would look for your address in the configuration file and pizzas would show up but you never knew how many. This was more than ten years ago and I have since lost it.9
They basically have Chinese crapware on many phones, disguised as "Smart Manager" or some bs. It's "powered by Clean Master". Clean Master is crapware developed by Cheetah Mobile.12
I don't like the use of `motherboard`.
We should change it to `parentboard` instead
That way its more inclusive32
So today (or a day ago or whatever), Pavel Durov attacked Signal by saying that he wouldn't be surprised if a backdoor would be discovered in Signal because it's partially funded by the US government (or, some part of the us govt).
Let's break down why this is utter bullshit.
First, he wouldn't be surprised if a backdoor would be discovered 'within 5 years from now'.
- Teeny tiny little detail: THE FUCKING APP IS OPEN SOURCE. So yeah sure, go look through the code! Good idea! You might actually learn something from it as your own crypto seems to be broken! (for the record, I never said anything about telegram not being open source as it is)
- The server side code is closed (of signal and telegram both). Well, if your app is open source, enrolled with one of the strongest cryptographic protocols in the world and has been audited, then even if the server gets compromised, the hackers are still nowhere.
- Metadata. Signal saves the following and ONLY the following: timestamp of registration, timestamp of the last connection with the server (both rounded to the day so not on the second), your phone number and your contact details (if you authorize it) (only phone numbers) in HASHED (BCrypt I thought?) format.
There have been multiple telegram metadata leaks and it's pretty known that it saves way more than neccesary.
So, before you start judging an app which is open, uses one of the best crypto protocols in the world while you use your own homegrown horribly insecure protocol AND actually tries its best to save the least possible, maybe try to fix your own shit!
*gets ready for heavy criticism*20
Well what the fuck. Life just won't stop with the dick punches this year.
To recap: My wife had me arrested on bs charges. While i was in jail, she packed her shit and left. She filed a restraining order, which i fought in court amd won. I have visitation with my daughter every other saturday and every Monday. I lost my apartment because she left, so I'm homeless. Living in my car.
Today, I was fired from my job of 6 years. Fuck me.16
I fucking saw it coming!
I discussed with my manager a much required raise given the number of patents the company has filed on my work, successfull completion of a full-scale ML product in 6 fucking months and working as a team lead for the last 2 month.
"We cannot bypass the policy of appraisal every one year"
"This is not the right time to ask for a raise from management"
And still that scumbag expects me to work on saturday, dedicate more that 9 hours everyday, not complain about the poor management and arrive on time everyday !
It is really time to leave this shithole company and this piece of shit manager who btw draws most of the budget allocated to the team.
I think I have realised not to give more fucks than paid for to any job no matter what.
Hands down. Fuck this!11
There should be a name for rants about fake stories. Like the ones you read and can smell some bs going on. I suggest frants.4
I'm hiring and I'm fucking done with recruiters buttering up skills etc and sending me BS candidates.
Interview earlier today...
CV: MySql skill level 10 (out of 10)
Reality: Can't write a simple JOIN!
CV: PHP 6+ years exp, self proclaimed ninja/jedi/oracle.
[Me]: Write me a function to map an array to x.
[Ninja]: What's an array?
I've come to the conclusion that the type of dev I want on my team is highly unlikely to be looking for work much less using some piece of shit shady agent to find work so I need to hunt him / her down personally and can use the phenomenally large recruiters fee as a hiring bonus / incentive.
Only problem now is finding quality full stack devs in the area (Johannesburg, South Africa).
I'm thinking of posting a 'challenge' job add to filter out good candidates - some kind of code challenge to be solved that gives them my contact info. Any one have any creative ideas I could try?31
- devRant TOR rant! -
There is a recent post that just basically says 'fuck TOR' and it catches unfortunate amount of attention in the wrong way and many people seem to aggree with that, so it's about time I rant about a rant!
First of all, TOR never promised encryption. It's just used as an anonymizer tool which will get your request through its nodes and to the original destination it's supposed to arrive at.
Let's assume you're logging in over an unencrypted connection over TOR and your login information was stolen because of a bad exit node. Is your privacy now under threat? Even then, no! Unless of course you had decided to use your personal information for that login data!
And what does that even have to do with the US government having funded this project even if it's 100%? Are we all conspiracy theorists now?
Let's please stop the spread of bs and fear mongering so that we can talk about actual threats and attack vectors on the TOR network. Because we really don't have any other reliable means to stop a widely implemented censorship.12
Today is my last day in hell. I have next week off and then i start my new and significantly better payed job.
As usual i have to get the final paperwork over with and surrender my equipment. Yesterday i get an IM from the person in charge of equipment notifying me that I also have to come in Monday because the she's not there on Friday and I can't finish the procedure without her signature.
Ok. Sure. So i sent an IM myself notifying that I won't be in today since I've been called on Monday and i won't be using my own time because no one ever delegates.
I got a reply saying that it's abnormal to procede this way because if anything happens to me today the firm is acountable and when I asked "So, if something happens to me on Monday, when i'm on my own fucking time, that IS PERFECTLY ALRIGHT ISN'T IT?"
The reply was Yes. 😂😂😂😂
Needless to say, I'm relaxing at home right now and will be going on Monday to finish up.
God I'm glad that i'm leaving this shithead company!!!13
My first dev job. Me and another guy get hired at the same time. He will be the lead dev, and I’ll be the junior dev on a long term project. Project gets delayed (and eventually canceled, but that’s a different story), so the lead dev decides to give me programming challenges to test my skill level. I successfully complete the challenges, but they aren’t up to his standards. Belittles me in front of our manager. Afterwards I ask him to show me how he would have done it. The dude can barely type let alone show me the way it should be done. I say nothing to the manager.
A few weeks pass, it’s clear the project we were hired for is canceled, so we are given other work. They task the lead dev with porting the company website to Wordpress so non-devs can alter content. They chose Wordpress mainly because the lead dev said he is familiar with it. Two weeks later, no progress has been made. They ask me if I can do it, and I do it in 2 days including additional functionality that was requested. Manager asks me why I thought lead dev couldn’t do what I did. I said, “I don’t think lead dev knows what the fuck he is doing. I don’t think he knows how to program.” Manager says, “Huh.”
Several months later lead dev is still there, but has yet to work on any projects with any success. They finally let him go.
Glad to finally get that off my chest.6
You know what I realized we should always say no for demo driven application development.
We should always ask for enough time do a proper development and if its not enough, shouldn’t write a single line.
Because once we deliver a working demo. Its release ready for them because its FUCKING WORKING..
And trying to explain why this is just a demo and cant be put to production is even bigger pain in the ass than saying no in the beginning.
LESSON LEARNED .4
I love it when lying, cheating, bitching dinosaurs act like they're all powerful and on God mode just because they can click buttons in a mobile app and do whatever the fuck they want. You know the system logs your shit, do you? I guess not.
I booked a car using a mobile app that I've been using for years. They absorbed their competition so currently, they are the only car booking app here. When I saw that my driver arrived at the pick-up location, I looked around and found that he wasn't there so I asked him where he is. He did not respond so I walked around the pick-up location and said, "I'm right outside <insert building name here>."
To my surprise, the mobile app said he has already picked me up. I kept messaging him asking what happened and why he picked me up in the app when I'm still waiting for him in the location. No response. I called him thinking it was just a misunderstanding and politely asked what happened. He was angry and said, "Why weren't you in the pick-up location?" I said I was there and couldn't find him. Thinking there must have been a mistake, I asked "Can you cancel my booking? I can't cancel from my side because it says I'm already in your car." He yelled, "Well, I can't do anything about that. I picked you up anyway and if I cancel now, it would reflect badly on my record."
I dropped the call. Now I'm stuck in my location because I can't use the app to book another car until this motherfucker "drops me off" when I wasn't even in his car to be dropped off anyway. I'm late for my appointment and had to chase down some taxis when most of them are occupied due to the rush hour. A few minutes later, I received a notification that I was "dropped off" and my credit was charged for the "trip".
I was furious and I swear to fucking Satan, I'm gonna destroy this man's career. This guy is on a power trip. First, his car just zoomed by the pick-up location. He did not consume the given 3 minutes wait, not like he would consume it anyway since I was fucking there waiting for him. I hate it when people are late so I also avoid making people wait. Second, he didn't have to pick me up at all. He could have just cancelled or let me cancel. And finally, he gave me that fucking attitude when I called him like IT JUST MADE SENSE that he picked me up anyway. Now I'm hassled and he gets paid for it.
What he said kept ringing in my ear:
"I don't want to get a bad record."
"I don't want to get a bad record."
"I don't want to get a bad record."
So I emailed the company and told them what happened. I explicitly said that not only do I want a refund, something has to be done with this driver given the details above. How's that for not having a bad record? I swear, the fucking rotting old corpses in this country act like they own the place just because they existed before Jesus was born. And these motherfucking drivers, the chariots from hell, they just abuse their passengers like they're some almighty god who can do as they wish because well, you don't have much "choice", do you? I have the choice to hand your ass back to you, sir.
This is why you're all fucking poor. You get a small taste of presumed "power", you act like little shits. This is why I have no sympathy for the poor in this fucking place. You're all lazy fucks who hassle everyone just because you feel entitled to do it. Because everything is unfair, right? You're not given opportunities, right? And yet given an opportunity, you do this kind of shit and assume everyone else is too dumb to prove what you did because you went clickity-clickity-click on an app you think you know everything about.
Fuck you. Fuck you. May god have mercy on you and I hope my rage blows over soon enough before I do some crazy shit as to stalk your next fucking location and keep spamming you with bad reports using different accounts until you lose the fucking job that you don't even care for. It's not that hard for a raging lunatic like me. God damn, I hate liars and cheaters. An eye for an eye, motherfucker.
"Now you're acting the same way and all powerful just because you can report them."
"It's ironic how you--"
Yeah, yeah, nice observation, genius. Stop spreading your mediocre "findings" on someone else's rant. It doesn't make you look smart, it makes you look desperate.
"Oh yeah, oh yeah? Well, stop spreading your mediocre rants in this plat--"
Shut the fuck up, oh my gggggggggggggggoddd. Just let me fucking rant.7
A colleague from university cried the last week that he cannot use git. For him it was just a big pile of software BS. I didn't bother to ask, as he is a very whiney person and complains about everything.
I asked him today...
He tried to create a git repostitory on his usbdrive. How else could he work on different machines???🤔😝
I tried to introduced him to Github/Bitbucket/...
He knew about them but was afraid they would sell/use his bugriddeld programming excercises😂4
I remember my first software engineer internship, the boss was terrible. He was cheap and only hired interns we had 0 guidance. This mother fucker would say shit in meetings like "hey we should start providing DBAAS, similar to DynamoDB start researching it I want a prototype by Wednesday" Wtf this guy is nuts. The overall product was suppose to be a fucking virtual machine hosting platform to compete with AWS, Digital Ocean, RackSpace etc designed by BS computer science interns lol. This guy tells us in a meeting one day "You know what's the difference between those guys (the competitors) and us?" We all looked around lost. This pompous ass hole says "Me , that's the difference you guys have me " 😂 what a fucking joke , not to mention all he has is a shitty math degree from a bullshit no name college in India, no developing experience what so ever. Man o man I never met anyone that was so fucking stupid but thought they were so fucking smart6
"Why do you think we should delay launching the new site?"
Because it's late afternoon on a Friday.
"So? What does it matter?"
Here's a bunch of good reasons.
"Nah let's do it today anyways."3
This is bullshit.
We've got a project where we need to build a robot that can:
A. Follow a line.
B. Avoid obstacles
C. Go through a maze.
This, in itself, is fine. I can manage.
The problem is, the teacher that is supposed to support the course, is never where he's supposed to be.
Ie: he was supposed to be in the classroom to answer questions and give feedback yesterday from 09:00 to 13:00. The fucker didn't fuckin show up.
OK, so today, he's supposed to be here too, I've been sat in his classroom without him waiting for over an hour...
Also, no way I can do the maze part without knowing what defines a fucking blocked path, is it going to be a physical object or is the line going to be a different cor if you're not allowed to pass there?
I'm getting tired of this bs.9
I was at my last job for 13 years when they outsourced my job to India. They kept me on as a liaison - they said they needed a BS detector to make sure the hosting company was not inflating their estimates. 6 most boring months of my professional career.
As I was getting my resume together to start looking, a former coworker called. She was now an application dev manager and was putting together a post integration team. One interview later, I was hired. It was perfect timing.1
I was about to ask my manager to roll me out off the project in my company.. it has been 4 years .... Yesterday he came and told me he is going to give me an big fat Raise !3
In our morning stand up, dev was bragging about how much code he was refactoring (like over-the-top bragging) and how much the changes will improve readability (WTF does that mean?), performance, blah blah blah. Boss was very impressed, I wasn't. This morning I looked at the change history and yes, he spent nearly two solid days changing code. What code? A service that is over 10 years old, hasn't been used in over 5, mostly auto-generated code (various data contracts from third party systems). He "re-wrote" the auto-generated code, "fixed" various IDisposable implementations and other complete wastes of time. How –bleep-ing needy are people for praise and how –bleep-ing stupid are people for believing such bull-bleep? I think I should get a t-shirt made with a picture of a BS-Meter and when he starts talking, “Wait a sec, I gotta change my shirt. OK…you were saying?”5
How can you tell if someone's a node.js coder?
Don't worry they'll tell you.
What do I dislike about node.js?
Seriously you guys need to chill out. Your language is not the end of all other languages. It isn't going to replace PHP or Python or Ruby. It's not going to be the only thing around in 4 years.
Now shoo fly you're bothering me11
Product team having a proof of concept demo with client:
Sales to client: "Just for the record, we are not selling this to a rival company. Because we really want this technology exclusive to you"
Me (thinking to myself): "Oh really? We just had a demo with them last 2 weeks"
One of the core values of our company is Integrity, and I am not just seeing it.
I hate bullshit metrics, they are everywhere.
- 90% unlimited downloads (not unlimited then is it, dickface)
- you are 53% more likely to be noticed with a pro account (yeah, because you fucked with the algorithms)5
1. Make sure the client understands that you wont be taking there BS.
3. Tell PMs to be decisive and think before making decisions.
4. Fuck windows updates. Use linux/mac.
5. Keep a loaded gun on your desk to deter any person from disturbing you when you are in your zone.
6. Use the gun to end pointless meetings to decide the background color of some div on the website.
Use at your own caution though.6
Dear Developers at Microsoft,
Why the FUCK does windows try to update EVERY TIME I boot my VM even though it fails EVERY FUCKING TIME? Can't it fucking learn that it's fucking broken and doesn't work? No? OK...7
It's almost time!
I am almost ready to release new devRant client and the full version of the api wrapper that powers it.
While I finish up a few things, here is a quick explination of what / why the client is:
The devRant client is called:
The reason I made yet another new client is:
I wanted to have a CLI client that could run on a chromebook and I also discovered the cool text editor called ed. I really like the command-based interface of ed, so I made a devRant client in that style!
dr is a simple and (mostly) no BS devrant client built for us cool cli-only people.
(yes, this was written in dr)
More info will come soon!13
Just updated to the latest insider build for Windows 10.. left PC unattended and came back later and it was ready... no BSODs, no random crashes, no issues, nothing... it just works as expected...
I can hear Linux fanatics screaming after reading this 😂
FUCK all this Windows stereotypes BS going on here16
I'm not sure whether to cry or to burn everything to the ground.
I'm stuck in a rotten, over aged corporate that will one day choke on all the documents and formalism they require. Which is something I'm generally fine with. Each to their own.
But ever since I handed in my resignation they have been fucking me like I have never been gang raped before.
(A little context: I work for a midsize financial institute. Which at least in Germany are full of legacy projects and are regulated as all hell.)
So some fuckwits decided that since the regulator slapped us hard 2 years ago that we need to make up a new standard of documentation that has to be used for all IT-documentation there ever was and ever will be.
So the upper management (the before mention dumb-dumbs) choose some consultant company and locked them up together with the brightest stars (read biggest slime balls) of the IT department in an ivory tower and told them to pull some out the ass.
And one year later (early November last year) they got the shit they ordered. Gilden shit, only the most sparkly and non-sensical bullcrap you could imagine.
But they only looked at it and deemed it good. Now the guys actually in charge of the the applications got served the dish. And guess what they found out when started to dig into? Nothing but contradictions, non-final thoughts and all of that held together by web of retarded, unusable guidelines. But they ate it, they cursed but they swallowed forced by disciplinary punishments waiting should they misbehave.
The only one emerging fact was: All previous documentation was completely invalidated.
But now the mighty lords in the ivory tower guided by the never failing hand of the higher management had the greatest idea of them all. They needed someone to check all the documentation till the end of this year but since they blew all of their budget on useless wankers ( oh, ofc I meant "highly qualified external help") they now preyed on the lowest in the food chain. Which is where this story goes full circle and comes back to me.
I was the lowest rank on the food chain, a student that just handed in his resignation.
I was the first to be locked up in the basement, my co-student followed shortly after.
And now I'm going to spend my last 2 months looking at checklists that we had to pull out of the slime's ass and validating hundreds of thousands of pages of documentation. We get grinded up in the endless hate coming from the guys that we need to tease and are held in position by a wall of sheer idiocy on the side of the rule makers.
Today I cried when I had to tell someone that his magnificent documentation was not standard conform and had thus no longer any meaning or right to exist.
Thanks you for those that made it this far down. I hope you never have to feel my pain.11
Hello everyone 👋
I see people blaming the developers when you see a crappy software product , saying that they have done a bad job.
But even it could be true also it could be the product managers who didn’t give enough time todo what needs to be done or project scope is too big for the persons knowledge.
I’ve worked in a company where deadlines were so tight I didn’t have enough time to proper UI and Testing. I used to be only developer who has someone experience and I had to train the interns as well. I am also to blame to joining such company but in desperate times takes desperate measures.
And now when i’m leaving the company and I have spend 2 years of my life for apps that I’m not proud of.
Just rant. Please feel free to give ur thoughts2
What the PMs always say: Always be thinking of ways to improve our system.
Me: Hey this is really poorly built. We should rebuild it before moving forward.
PMs: No just use the same code we used before. It was working so we don't need to rebuild it.4
Got this email from my manager today... a bit of a downer to my three day weekend!
I actually don't talk about work (in an indentifiable way), and I think most of the other points in their guide are utter BS (and unenforceable).
I am pretty open (about myself) on social media though, so feel sorry for HR if they've been combing through it! 🤣42
Remember when I said don't launch on a Friday?
Coming into work on Monday with a broken site is exactly why we don't do that...
Now I get to deal with fixing this issue while also dealing with complaints from managers who act like I didn't warn them.
Inspiration for alcoholism.5
Before the storm - New Feminist Programming Language C+=
So before reading and raging on the box popoli post "the costs of a code of conduct" (thanks for linking @cursee ) I thought I'd share an awesome repository some Anon highlighted on 4chin/g.
I encourage you to read the README.md if you have been feeling depressed and/or mad with all this politics in programming bs.
This is probably my last post for a while! I’m leaving for my honeymoon and we are going on a cruise and I ain’t gettin the WiFi! Hell naw!! Not taking any laptop, not answering phone!! Feels sooooo gooooood!! Especially after this shit week. I’ll be away from it all for 9 days!!!!!!!
We are going a day early so I might lurk a bit here and there but not much. 86 everything and everyone’s bs! Just me and my beautiful wife!7
Woke up this morning with a fuck this shit mood. I need to write test specs for a system I don't know shit about, and it seems no one who work with this system wants to talk to me, so I gave up and started devranting and reading a game dev book. Fuck this shitty job.2
Well now, I wouldn't want to mention anyone specific since talking about someone behind their back and calling them 'weird' isn't very nice. 🙄 But absolutely HYPOTHETICALLY speaking, if I HAD a weird coworker, they would probably...
- ... strut about the office, telling all how great yet underpaid their work is
- ... write lots of 'concepts' because coding is for lowly programmers
- ... insist that the code they have to do when boss is looking is simply too complicated for unit testing, and 'that's great!'
- ... brag about their/wear to work a ridiculous array of ties in every colour imaginable, when everyone else shows up casual
- ... trap people into listening to them talk for hours about...
-- ... ties
-- ... their misspent youth
-- ... how awesome they are/were/will be
-- ... why it's a good idea to eat cheese
- ... never let me forget I'm female, coz *insert BS reasons why all devs must by nature be male here*
- ... send me little unsolicited notes and mails with funny (sexist) jokes *har har*
- ... be let go, at which point everyone else discovers why they had so much time that they could spend chatting away at the watering hole
- ... earn the eternal hatred of anyone picking up the pieces of their 'work'
- ... try to steal our customers away who will laugh in their bloody face
Just my theory, of course..3
I wish I could type into my brain:"dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1337"
To delete everything of my ex gf memories...
She just wrote a message, again...22
I have this teacher who focuses so much on documentation that I hardly get to code sometimes. The worst experience with that teacher was with a project I think about two years ago. Every time I came up with (modified) documentation (we have to document EVERYTHING before allowed to start programming) she would turn me away with some bs argumentation and also point out non existing English grammar errors (my English is way better than hers). After nine weeks of documenting (so, no single line of code yet and projects take ten weeks) she gave me the green light. Then at 'delivery' she had the fucking balls to to tell me that MY CODE WASN'T THAT STABLE AND GOOD YET.
I WAS LITERALLY HAVING A LIVE RAGE ATTACK OVER THERE.4
A while back our whole team was really frustrated with the marketing department.
In retaliation we made a new branch for our project called marketing-bs, which was used for all of marketing feature requests.
It's the little wins that keep us going.1
Browsing job postings, and some of these requirements are just crazy, and/or wtf. Here's an example:
Front End developer wanted, junior to mid-level. An ideal candidate will be an expert in PHP, C#, and Java. Minimum experience of 10 years. Estimated compensation 30,000 per year.
Entry level full stack developer. Must be an expert in SQL. 5 years experience, BS in computer science required.
Web Developer intern - must have 3 years of experience. Must be an expert in x, y, z. This position is unpaid.
a tale of daily frustration:
*yup I'm up-to-date ...*
git add -p .
*hack in beautiful patch ...*
git status -bs
*correct branch, didn't forget any files ...*
git diff --cached
*yep, that is what I mean to commit ...*
git commit -m"[TKT-NUM] Meaningful commit message"
git log -p -1
*double-checking ... looks good ...*
git push remote tkt-num-etc
*for a brief moment feel accomplished ...*
*notice typo in commit message ...*
I don't have a funny image or punchline to sum this post up. But know that if you recognise this feeling, then I am your brother in git.6
Going to big box electronics stores and seeing how outrageously sales reps will lie to me when faced with questions above their paygrade, starting with high-level stuff and moving to outright bs technojargon
First, most legit question to a Best Buy rep: "I'm looking to set up a server to run a multiplayer game. Ideal specs?
Last question: how many gigaflops should the IP Stack of my rendering modem be?7
Coworker: hey can you do this?
Me: sure *couple hours later* it's done.
Coworker several hours later: that thing you did completely changed. Can you update it?
*checks the platform we use so non devs can create web pages* All of my code was erased and I have to restart and add even more functionality. Why the actual fuck would you hire web developers if you're just going to have other employees use a poorly built tool to build pages. Every fucking time something breaks in the shitty fucking app, I have to fix it. Or if it doesn't do some crazy functionality, I have to hack code in there to do it in the ugliest way. Fuck tools like this. Fuck companies who make money off of these tools/use these tools. And fuck the developers who make these shitty tools that give real web developers so much frustration.4
I had a hunch it's gonna be a shitshow the moment I first met the scrum master, I thought it could be a good challenge to see if I can salvage this sinking ship, I had never regret something as much as this one,
It's full of political bs, people pretending to work, different divisions shifting blames, IT division that exist just because, Business guys not having any clear picture of what they want to do, probably something common in the corporate scene,
Most recent bs,
1. They restricted the internet access on the floor, limited it to be accessible only by non IT person,
Reason allegedly being, the business guys always had a prejudice towards the IT guys, they have always been envious to the IT guys being the one having all the spotlight by only sitting around the office while the business guys had to go outside and travel a lot.
The reason was justified by their response during most recent meeting to discuss "new feature", when the IT guys mentioned about the internet being down, the business head's response was,
"That is unfortunate, it makes sense though, it's (access point) not called IT-NET, soo..."
2. By the end of last year, there were series of full day meeting conducted for a whole week to discuss about the "new feature", suffice to say it was meaningless,
The decision kept changing after several more subsequent meetings, and the current (not final) decision has nothing remotely similar to the one discussed last year,
3. Recently someone had trouble with their git branch, apparently several hundred files were deleted, and several hundred others had changes, and the person had no recollection of doing so, I checked the origin, the most recent push was from several days ago,
I asked to check the git status, and it's all unstaged files, so I told the person to install a gui, that should help to see the changes,
To my surprise, in a low voice the person whispered "tch, such a bother", I pretended I did not hear that, though I still insisted the person to use a gui, but ignoring what I said, the person kept asking what's wrong to another person, they refuse to use gui though they always did merging/branching mistakes7
Tldr; make sure what you study is relevant to the field and you enjoy it otherwise don't waste your time.
BTW: devrant is awesome it gets me through the day.
So I am almost 3/4ths through a master's in cs and I am contemplating why I went to school in the first place/dropping out.
My program is basically an extension of the bs I got from the same school meaning we learn very general cs topics. There is only one ai class for example.
I had a junior developer position before I even got my bs so now that I am this far along and looking at job openings I'm wondering what why and how my school is able to get away with teaching us this shit.
After all my schooling I learnt more on my own and through Google. I have little to show for my school work other than a degree that says I did a bunch of busy work. And the specific things that I did learn I will never ever remember. Seriously. Who here knows what a MIB and OID are and have actually used them?
I wish I tried harder to get into a school like Berkeley but just looking at their applications is depressing. I always had issues with school and they expect my to have the grades, extra curriculars and other shit. I'll build you a robot or make you a website but I'm not doing that nonsense.
And then there's Google and apple and all these big tech companies expecting me to have written full Enterprise software and know every single algorithm and programming language because everyone uses something different. Sure I wish I had experience in all 50 languages that are popular right now but I don't. And I'm not gonna learn it from school that's for damn sure.
Who here actually went to a good school and can say it helped them in the real world? How many employers actually care about school over actual experience?
Who knows how to burn a school down and get away with it? Or at least make teachers with Phds stop reading off slides all lecture. I know how to fucking read for fucks sake. Not too mention they use shitty software made in 2003 that's no longer supported. And I could go on about the teacher last quarter who graded the midterm on final day while he flirted with the 3 girls in class. And I could go on and on and on but I feel like I need to start being productive so I don't waste away.
Just so done.4
Wtf bs is this? Can't governments just stop trying to control the internet?
It's literally the closest thing we have to a free and fair society on the planet and that's with all the tracking and abuse of information going on. I think we need to start applying our minds to creating a decentralised network with p2p discovery routed through our phones if we want to keep any semblance of freedom of speech or privacy around for our kids. Routing traffic wouldnt use more than 50-100mb of ram and would probably use a lot less battery than Google does listening to our conversations or transmiting our location data so we wouldn't even notice. If only we could find a cable free decentalized way to get data across the ocean no one would be able to control it again, I doubt we would be able to shut it down either.10
Not an enemy yet, but I’ve just debated with a senior dev that said stored procedure is faster, safer, and works better than entity framework
I agree with faster (only a bit) but the rest is just bs26
I can never get over this 😥
We were taught 5-6 subjects of electrical or mechanical engineering in out freshman year 😃 and our course is called "computer science and engineering".
We had ONE subject in the whole fucking year that was related to the course, called "introduction to computer"!!!!
The second semester of the freshman year had no subject remotely close to computers, but yeah we learnt about thermodynamics and beams and Trusses and motors and welding 😒.
They should have also told us what we are supposed to do with that knowledge 😒.
What's the point!!!!
Will is make us a mechanical engineer 😒?
Also have you forgotten we are here to learn about computers and not about the tension in the rope of the pulley 😒?
Also we have no subjects,in the 4 year course about actual development 😃 not even old school web development.
Fucking hate this shit20
Boss: [tells me to do a thing]
Me: [does a thing]
Boss: [mad because I didn't do the thing his way]
Me: [physically numb from putting up with this shit for 3y now]
I've been checked out at work for awhile now, but today was some next level BS. I had to throw together an application demo in 3hr, couldn't take lunch today because I needed to sign for a package, sold an 3y old laptop on Ebay (and got chewed out because he thinks it's worth more than that).
The only reason I still show up to this shit-show of an office, is I don't want to leave my only other coworker with our boss.. That, and my interview isn't until monday....2
Just joined a new team at the organisation as senior dev.
Team lead keeps singing about how we need unit testing and good standards.
I implement domain pattern on the backend supported by unit tests.
It passes QA and then get an earful about the code not being 'restful'. What does that even mean?
Well, it matters not since team lead changes the whole feature in the release branch and all unit tests obviously fails. Builds start to fail.
The solution? Comment out all unit tests. In the sprint retro, we hear the same old adage 'we need 80% code coverage'
Do as i say, not as I do. FML.6
Just arrived at the vacation home, turns out the "free" wifi is dead as hell, because quote; "a tree fell on a wire"
Which first of all that is fucking bs because they have internet at the reception still so that shouldn't work either right? But okay we now live without internet for the coming 3 days we are relying on our data plan....5
Me: *finds exploit in site at work*
Developer of site: "You talk bs"
Me: "lemme show ya"
While I was trying to demo it, the guy quickly patched it xD (making it look as if it didn't work in the first place)1
SeniorDev: “OMFG..MalwareBytes is taking up almost 50% of my CPU!”
Me: “Didn’t you have a virus on your machine couple of days ago?”
SeniorDev: “Uh..yea..but it was cleaned up.”
Me: “Your OS might have been compromised. If your antivirus is still busy doing something, then it may be time to start over with a fresh re-install.”
SeniorDev: “No, that’s not it. This is just BS our Network admins don’t want to fix because I’m not a VP”
Me: “I’m pretty sure they don’t care.”
-in as much of a ‘I’m kidding’ tone as I could -
Me: “They would care more if you stopped going to inappropriate web sites on the company computer.”
SeniorDev: “I never go to those sites. It was a link to a charity web site my wife sent me. You know how those sites are. They are built by college kids, so they have no security and was hijacked. That’s how I got the virus.”
Me: “You actually said that to Jim and he believed it?”
SeniorDev: “Well ...yea because….oh …–bleep- you.”
"Jim" sits about 50 feet away, popped his head over the cube wall and smiled. It was awesome.
So my wife got laid off from her job aaaaaaand that puts me back again in the hunt for freelance bs to cover up her income until she finds something decent........dis is gon suck bad man.....6
I only went and left my god damn bag on the train with my work laptop in it (2016 Macbook Pro, started this job 2months ago...). Now I have to get up at 5 fucking 30 am to make a 5 hour round trip to collect it while making up a BS excuse to WFH, or more accurately - work from some cafe in a random city 200 miles away. FML9
I have one experience where a guy reached out to me on LinkedIn for an excellent opportunity, so I assumed it would have to do something with an upcoming startup and the guy is looking to onboard me if things go right.
The guy was from a tech and managerial background as shown on his profile. So 5 minutes into our skype call and he says:
He : "Before I detail you this excellent opportunity for passive income, tell me why I should work with you? "
Me : Is this some sort of pyramid scheme?
He : Not exactly but similar..
Me: No, I would not like to be scammed, Thank you for your time.
< Disconnect >
And that was the first and last time I responded to a message that talked vague opportunity bs.
Went to a Hackathon, the platform looked like bs and the documentation was mehhh. So spent the time sleeping, waking only to eat Pizza :3.
(Know it was bs when no one cared >.>)2
A coworker asked me to give him a hand on a project last thursday at around 8:00pm, by Friday noon I had most of it complete. Then turn the code back to him. Then somehow , it got placed on me during the weekend....20 mins before leaving to San antonio to be with my sister while my niece was born. Yeah...no..sorry...guess who enjoyed SA this weekend? This guy. Past experiences have shown me that one should not sacrifice personal time for company bs. Specially here in south texas where the majority of employers are from Mexico. In Mexico, there is no worker appreciation culture, going above and beyond the line of duty to accomplish tasks is not met with any sort of consideration. So nope nope nope nope.18

What's worse than a meeting jam-packed with corporate bullshit? An entire day of the same stuff, rebranded as a conference.
So, I've been having to deal with server issues and other BS. All of these issues have caused all of my websites to be down. For the longest time, I couldn't get Nginx to find my websites' directories except for the default Nginx website, so I changed the default Nginx website to what you see in the image.
I tried to be funny, did I succeed? Even a little bit?8
SQL Rule 1. Always assume there are external processes that might affect your data. (for instance, triggers).
SQL Rule 2. In Denormalised data, never execute logic on dependant table values, always copy from the parent.
SQL Rule 3. When Denormalised data schemas are created the DBA knows what they are doing.
SQL Rule 3.1. If DBA knows what they is doing then according to Rule 1 there is no problem with adding in some triggers to maintain data clones as they are created.
SQL Rule 4. If you don't like or agree with triggers, deal with it. They are a first class tool in a first class RDBMS. In a multi-app or service environment there may be many other external processes massaging your data
SQL Rule 5. If all previous rules are not broken and the system has been running efficiently for many years DO NOT complain that there are triggers in the database that are doing and have been doing the same process that you just butchered (by violating Rule 1 and 2) in your makeshift "hello world, look what I can do from my phone" angular BS when the rest of the users are still relying on the existing runtime app.
SQL Rule 6. If you turn my triggers off, you sure as hell better turn them back on!1
From the 100+ employees in our team I was the only one without a company car.
After a couple of years and having driven across Europe for all sorts of business-related stuff, I asked one myself because my own rusty car was failing on me more and more. I was told it was against company policy to give me one which was total BS ofcourse.
This among other lies which I discovered led me to ragequit. BEST decision so far.
Working olmost 6 years for my current employer and never have I been (feeling) cheated on!
Well SO blocked me from asking any more questions. Which is BS because I went back and edited my questions as I was told to.
Ohh well, I figured I would just make a new account. So I logged out. Put in a new email. Filled out all the forms confirmed my email and then I see "You cannot ask questions" WTH? Appentally it cached my browser, so when I signed back up it linked my two accounts together..
Well, looks like I'm making a new email..6
why is everyone's god damn answer in the corporate world fuking meetings?
you usually don't solve anything with them anyway, and there's too damn many
if you took the time to read the conversation, you'd know there's no meeting needed and the other party agreed to a method that wont break shit
or if you had half a brain and read the part of the chat you didn't even need to scroll up for you could think of something simple like not breaking working things and asking before changing it?
fukin corp retards, company men. how is this world still going?7
To create a bank that's 99% digital (the 1% is for office space) with no BS charges and kick-ass money management tools.6
I'm so fucking done with net neutrality. the only ones who want it are verion, comcast, and other big isps.
this is fucking merica. nobody wants it, and this is a government designed for the people. I guess it only works in theory.
the talk about this has been fucking exhausting. how much clearer could it be?
how does it keep coming up? so much of the economy is online. why would congress want this? this should be a fucking fundamental right. no bs, just fast speeds everywhere. i hate all the isps thinking that because the world is so reliant on the internet, they control everything.
isps are a service. that's it.
they're not a profiler or advertiser, just a service.
and if that changes, I'll buy a bunch of flash drives and go offline.
bottom line, we should have privacy, neutrality, and a safe web. fuck those greedy bastards.17
Overheard a dev bragging about how our site is fully PCI compliant. So much so even the invoice data is secure. My BS meter went off, so I decided to look at what 'secure' code looked like.6
"I made a PWA, I'm a mobile app developer"
Me: No fuck off, you're a lazy cunt that doesn't want to learn native development.5
How am I supposed to deal with unwanted swag? I attended a VR dev meetup (turned out to be pure corporate advertising) and someone placed unsolicited swag at my desk. After the corporate spiel I privately asked one of the coordinators where to return this because I don't want to put it to waste. He called me rude and walked away.3
I'll just start off with how I really feel. Fuck big corporations with their career robots and retarded practices!
Now for a story. So I work remotely for most of the time nowadays, since my company has as clients big corporations. Used to be embedded with said clients, but it became kind of painful to work with them all so I asked to be reassigned to a remote position.
Now for the retarded part: The fucking Klingons I'm working with have two tiers to their VPN, but won't let me have the full version because it would be too fucking expensive. I checked and it's fucking 50 bucks per year difference.
So for that the Klingons are making me code through a remote connection that has a "best effort" priority.
Anyway after 3 weeks of writing code at a 400-600ms latency I finally snap.
I try to use a proxy and it. I write one myself, gets balcklisted in 2 days.
After about another week of writing code through a fuck straw I start working on node socket with 2 clients and a server that encrypts the send data, and syncs 2 folders between my workstation and the remote one.
It's been a month now and it is still working. It's not perfect, but I can at least write code without lag.
Question for you peeps: What shenanigans have you pulled to bypass shit like this?4
Work out the major requirements,
Identify platform(s) and environment best suited to project,
Design and develop around core features,
Allow 6-12 weeks for scope creep and the additional BS features,
Build, test and deploy in a week or two to meet unattainable deadlines.
Spend new couple of months refactoring and fixing everything.
i honestly hate the ap computer science principles curriculum. we're taking an ap test soon, so for the past few weeks, we've been constantly taking practice tests.
it pisses me off so much. the questions, the criteria, it's all bs.
we have questions like "what will reduce the digital divide?" with choices like "education for low income families on computers." like, I DONT FUCKING KNOW.
frankly, I DONT FUCKING CARE. giving electronics to people who cant afford it is great and all, BUT IT DOESNT INVOLVE ANYTHING ABOUT COMPUTING.
HEY, COLLEGE BOARD, KNOWING IF AN ALGORITHM IS TECHNICALLY AN "ABSTRACTION" DOESNT FUCKING MATTER. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT I CAN IDENTIFY WHATS MORE EFFICIENT, WHERE A BUG IS, CONCEPTS INVOLVED IN PROGRAMS, THINGS LIKE THAT.
NOT IF DNS IS SIMILAR IN STRUCTURE TO THE US POSTAL SYSTEM.
god i hope whoever wrote this gets hit in the head by a github server that was dropped from the 2^8th floor.2
Couple of jobs back we got bought out by that massive shipping company with the red and yellow colors.
We used macs and some high up moron decided it was a good idea to put on domain policy restrictions on our macs, but developers can't work without admin access so if we wanted to keep said admin access, we had to sign a written agreement indicating that we were not allowed to do certain thing, like change our wallpaper or install personal music players, you know like Spotify, which at the time was what most of us used.
Now this was just a nice cherry on the cake of stupid descision that was making me rethink working there. Thanks to the high demand for skilled front ends, it was 11 am when we got this, 3pm I had comnfirmed my interview for the next day.
An hour later our manager called us all in to explain this was BS formalities. Well too fucking late, learn to communicate you dumb shit.1
The question "are you busy" is the most loaded fucking BS question ever. If you answer and say you're busy you get told that you aren't that busy since you answeted the chat. If you don't answer the messenger blows up your shit asking many more times and possibly even fucking calls you.
If I don't answer, I'm busy go the fuck away. "But it was super important and I needed it fixed right away!" Ok, but when I answered your message just 4 minutes after your originally messaged me don't make me spend another 5 minutes asking for information you knew I was going to ask for and could have provided in one of your follow up messages (Client name, website, page with the problem, description of the problem). Also, don't tell me that it has to get fixed because I'm the one who made the mistake. It has to get fixed because it's wrong, it doesn't fucking matter who made the mistake.3
I'm an avid user of Snapchat and have used it for quite a while, but there's always been something that pisses me off.
When an app gets an update, I'm quick to check the changelog and see what's now and what's been fixed. That's my little snippet of information I like to know on a release. And then there's Snapchat.
They put fuck all in their changelogs. By fuck all I don't mean a little bit of information, I mean they don't list anything. They, instead, lost features from their last major release which could've been 10 or so releases back. Even Twitter's "Fixed some bugs" is more informative than their bs.
So I ended up writing a well worded and surprisingly clean message in their feedback section about this, but I'm not expecting much. In short I said "You changelogs are crap, you need to put more into them to show a bit more respect, showing stuff from a few releases ago isn't helpful" and my favourite "if you can't do it in the team that releases, get the primary devs to write the changelogs for you".
I'm saying this here to see if anyone agrees with my opinion. If you're going to release an update, you really need to tell us what's updated.
balancing school work between life and sport and programming is so hard. i mean, school is complete bs. what’s the point?
ffs it’s not *just* that im never gonna use the shit im taught, but that if it dont learn it, im punished. even in some classes (code.org), information that we’re taught is blatantly incorrect. either way, being able to find the foci or an ellipse and the latus rectum (hehe) of a hyperbola isnt going to make it easier when i get my job and just adjust css to my bosses’s specifications. i maintain a 4.0, and i fucking hate it. my friends are working hard, and getting into mit for racial diversity, while im doing just as much work, for what?
i want out. i really do. but this redundant thing called a degree is holding me back. i really want to have some way of proving my skills without a degree. i’m currently building a social media application i believe will take off, but frankly, i dont care.
take off or not, hopefully it will be enough to prove my skills. i’ve been working on this for two weeks now, and, well, that’s my story.7
COO Snake ousts CEO, fires founders, is generally clueless about tech and product and design and science (and basically everything this business is about) and expected me to drop everything else I do (rich, varied and fulfilling) and work full time as a slave-nerd. Some people just don’t get it.
When the project you've been working on gets canned at 85% completion since your project stakeholder decides to go back to the contractor he was initially trying to replace...
How's your morning, fellow devs?1
Me : We need a resource that can help us achieve the deadlines that you set and the sudden requirement changes that arrive.
Manager: What are the requirement specifics?
Me: Candidate should have industry experience and have worked on such and such projects.
Manager: Better to take new interns. We can have 4 interns in cost of 1 full time.
Me: What about skills and relevant experience?
Manager: You can teach them right?
Me: What about the deadline then?
Manager: You will have 4 people to achieve deadline.
I am currently in a contract for 1 year that expires in May. Should I breach the bond and run from this shit manager? Should i persist like a stoic?
Help me people, I am dying working under this piece of shit that doesn't even know where to type git clone and claims himself to be very technically advanced!8
*Dont you want to become a professional python dev?“ Take this course on udemy.
DONT YOU WANT TO SHUT UP AND SHOW ME AT LEAST ADS THAT ARENT PISSING ME OFF THAT MUCH? I learn where else because these tutorials are the biggest bs on the planet.3
Am I the only one who thinks that the new Linux CoC is actually not bad? I think most of the ppl who are flaming about the CoC didn't even read the text. It literally says not be be an asshole and be polite to everyone. What's wrong with that? I know that man think the author has a questionable background. Even if, so what? Dump the CoC and "pull the code" BS because you don't like the author? Let the politics out of open source and get your shit together... and yes I see the irony, but this is the place for ranting :)30
Android, please fuck off. I cant install/update apps because i don't have enough space. So 1gb of free memory is not enough for a 10mb app?
This is my 3rd android phone, and I've had the same issues on all of them.
Probably getting a iPhone 7. Sad, i know :(19
So I went through the first round Google interview process and was declined for not "finishing fast enough" even though I did in fact solve the problem in the allotted time.
Either it's a BS excuse and they were just interviewing me to interview me for a quota or there is some invisible time limit that I am not aware of.
Really annoys me when I just don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong and instead get what feels like cop out answers.4
To all web devs adding cookie-nags on your companys pages: stop that! Now! No where does that cookie law require you to ruin your site with nagging popups. Where's the focus on usability?
And the rule about informed consent? Which normal user (like my mother) knows what that means anyway? I call bs! Politicians, don't get me started.
Every user on the internet goes JMIGA: Just Make It Go Away, click whatever making that crap disappear.
What user will go "holy shit, they're using cookies!! I'm outta here!" No one in the history of the internet, that's who. Argh.9

Okay, one after another. They like to piss me off, apparently.
Coleague knows something isn't possible with current state of some api and pushes phone to me so I can maybe figure out what to reply to client. I dry-typed in "Its not possible" gave him phone and said "boom done, you know it aint possible"
Okay, TL;DR she got pissed that I am pissed that this BS is thrown at me and I dont want to participate in promissing something I know is undeliverable.
So she told me to go to PM/PO *kind of guy but not rly* with that problem. He aint technical by any mean. We are small company and for some reason this guy has more bearoucratic approach than I thought is possible to fit in one human.
Anyway. Well, apparently we will have meeting what are our options.
It all beginned that one guy promissed other guy undeliverable feature....
And becouse someone couldn't use his fucking brain it's pushed onto me, or I need to figure out how to do it. You cant without introducing safety flaw, period, it's that fuckin' simple.
But nooo, we will have god-knows-how-long meeting, that will bring exacly 0 value, as fking allways, and all I want now is just fucking focus on my fucking code becouse, ya know, I have timeline to follow, I dont have time to all that BS.
And to give you context, while keeping the stuff I cant share secret, imagine you have an API, that is just 'facade' of backend API, and layer of security. And they want to add authoritative endpoint to the facade API. Kind of endpoint "yes, you got paid".
Bravo, big brain, it will not work without like huge-as-fuck vunrability...
How to not get pissed? Any protips?1
Found this using elementary os
So while browsing the market i found this "thing"
Am am the only one who things that this is a huge BS?11
On the morning of my 4th day at the new job I woke up with that feeling in my stomach "I fucking don't want to go to work anymore".
it took 3 days. Must be my personal best.
Sup with all these people in the office arguing that writing documentation is pointless because it will just become out of date? I even heard one dev say it'd be so problematic that the company would need to hire someone full time.
That sounds like BS to me. Sounds like some people culturally think documentation isn't cool. That maybe they don't know how to do it.
So, I'd like to hear opinions on the topic. Mine is that documentation is useful and even if it gets out of date, it provides some value.
What's better: out of date documentation, or no docs at all?9
"curl : The response content cannot be parsed because the Internet Explorer engine is not available, or Internet Explorer's first-launch configuration is not complete. Specify the UseBasicParsing parameter and try again."
Why the flying fuck do i have to configure some BS in internet explorer to use curl in Powershell? I thought IE was finaly dying, but nope!3
Two months of meaningless meetings and calls to assess "requirements" and three months worth of actual development work crammed into 3 weeks. Fuck this corporate bs. Agile my ass.
Realtalk: I LOL when I read corporate BS that talks up product, skillz, or tech. But when I fix something in the background, and I read the manager's client email saying something like "our marvellous technical team has found the issue and resolved it" I gotta say I wanna strut for a bit. <_<
The YouTube ad content Nazi's just forced me to watch another WIX ad. This one featured the super model Karlie Kloss who is the spokesperson for a organization that tries to get girls into coding....
Evil on top of Evil on top of Evil3
At home: Man I really love code and everything I can do with it. I'm a fucking wizard.
At work: You want me to copy and paste some text into the view for you? Okay... *cries into keyboard*
Udacity scholarships are total bs, a total business tactic.
Nothing is free.
There is no such thing as free lunch.9
I can't be the only one having thoughts about glueing a note 7 under my PMs car so I don't have to listen to his bs anymore...🤔🤔1
Small update to this rant
A classmate of mine lend me his old laptop with an SSD and an HDD and I could install Ubuntu Budgie on it and use it while my laptop is under repairment. The thing is, this temporary laptop is pretty awesome and fast and the fact that I don't have to deal with all the NVidia proprietary drivers and other gaming laptop bs makes me pretty happy
Update to the story above: the HDD of the temporary laptop died (didn't have anything important on it, so no problem). But I must be going through some bad omen tech times, since, beside my laptop and this HDD dying, my cooking plate, inflatable mattress, some sockets and lightbulbs broke inside my apartment. Hail!
I studied BS Computer Science and one of our requirements is our thesis. All of the groups in our section proposed Web Based apps and got rejected because web based apps are too common. So we have no choice so all of us proposed mobile apps. Mobile Development is not in our curriculum so we have to teach ourselves during the development of our thesis.
All of the groups' dev collaborated and taught each other except one group, my group. Since I am a lazy motherfucker, I didn't taught myself how to develop a mobile app (android). So I made a web based app with responsive design, purchased my own domain, used android studio's webview and voila, a mobile app with a web based admin.
P.S. We got the best thesis award.3
Today, I got some crap on my desk with possible bug reports from the field. They have been lingering somewhere for fucking MONTHS, and suddenly, an immediate answer was due. I was the unlucky one who was the least clueless about the product involved. SHIT.
OK, sifted through the reports. Some of them were duplicate, others obviously not our problem. No idea where to even start for the rest. FUCK, it's Friday!
But here comes "senior dev secret knowledge"(tm). Instead of saying WTF-IDK, I proposed an "action plan"(tm) (that BS term alone...) detailing the steps that we would need to take, and since I had no idea how long we would need, I just added enough steps in the "action plan"(tm) to make two weeks of investigation believable.
PM was very happy and just took that as direct customer reply. Now it's weekend anyway. :-)
W8 wut?! O.o
How the hell is someone gonna hack my computer using calculator?!
Also WTH?! I don't even know what that built in admin BS is in win10, let alone how to log in with this o.O4
'Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet 25 years ago today.' If I hear that BS one more time..... #ffs10
Not much of a haxk, just a stupid thing that works.
In my hs videogame programming class, the teacher has this program called LANSchool (most of you have heard of it) which he used to restrict apps/browsers to the point of uselessness . He didn't (and still doesn't) know anything about the stuff he 'teaches', most is tought by TAs.
Here's the dumb part: he WHITELISTED APPS. A friend, one of the TAs, figured out that if you rename something 'Google Chrome', lanschool wouldn't care. So I got Chromium (for unblocked internet) and switched its blue icons in the exe for original chrome icons, then renamed it 'Google Chrime'. Woo.
LANSchool is such a bad program (you can even unblock a site by spamming the F key for refresh).
The teacher did, and still does, treat the TAs like trash. He's a babysitter while students listen to online vids and the TAs.2
From a job posting I recently viewed:
"About you: We don't care about years of experience or knowledge of particular technologies, if you have a computer science degree; or a degree at all for that matter."
further down in the same posting...:

GOD ALMIGHTY I HATE SWIFT & XCODE...
Why the fuck does it take a horrendous amount of time to muck about with layout constraints. Why the heck does xcode choose to add constraint layouts to elements that already have pissing constraints! Why does dealing with something as trivial as tables have to be so god damn fucking involved when HTML and CSS let me create and style tables in fuck all lines.
And what the hell is up with how pissing long xcode takes just to figure out that 1 extra line of code I've just added. You jump to another file and xcode finally decides to be an ide again and bitch at the fact that you've forgotten to add some parameter or that they've decided to rename paramter "x" since version fuck nows what.
Working with abstract classes is fun, lets use protocols (because interfaces are too old school) and then lets tack on something we call extensions and then lets make people piss about with convenience initializers.
And lord almighty, what the fuck is up with casting, what all this ?! BS. What's wrong with just checking if the value is null in the first place, or whats wrong with giving something an initial value, oh because having to unwrap shit is more elegant right??
And good god, I need to own a fucking cinema screen just to have the storyboard open, there's less fucking panels on the Sistine Chapel ceiling
then there is in xcode.1
Why the fuck these managers can’t understand that you can’t build a full blown system with in a week. After building a demo driven application to show the client you can tell the client we are fucking ready to launch the damn thing . I FUCKING MENTIONED BEFORE GOING TO THE MEETING ITS NOT RELEASE READY GOD DAMN IT.
Now when I say we can’t launch this app we need to fix things . THE FUCKING MANAGER HAS THE GUTS TO SAY “one day is enough to fix the issues right ? Shouldn’t be a big deal for you to fix this” .
Kill me now 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬7
When you have to lock down #general in #slack because people cant be responsible.
Then get stuck making #bs-general and other #bs prefixed channels so that people know if they join them they will be annoyed.4
Story && rant && dev && linux
I was using linux mint for a while... more like 5 months for work, there's this Touchpad/mouse issue in it that was driving me crazy, so basically the mouse stops responding out of nowhere in the middle of my coding and I have to restart the fucking laptop to get it back. Yeah, I tried all the solutions I could find on the Internet and nothing works.
This issue likes to fucking mess with me so much, it seems to only happen when I absolutely mustn't restart the laptop or I'm working on a task and have a tight deadline and I don't have time to waste restarting my pc.
A couple of days ago, I had this major feature I needed to release to production and the time I estimated for it and shared with my team turned out to be insufficient, so I had to work extra hours from home to finish it ... while I was working, the mouse issue returned and I had to restart my pc like 20 times that day. It was fucking frustrating and It was already midnight and all you can hear are keyboard sounds and fucks flying.
I made a promise to myself that once i finish this task, I'm gonna fucking migrate to another distro, I'm fed up with linux mint's BS. I've been putting up with it for so long it's time to move on.
Yesterday I installed Manjaro and I'm happily working on it today xD.6
In our stand up this morning, again, he was belly aching he is still not done because of the complexity of SharePoint.
I thought "Good lord...what the frack is the problem? Surely other devs in the world aren't having this much of a problem."
Fire up google...search for an example...copy the MSDN C# example...run it...tada...updated the SharePoint list just fine. Maybe 15 minutes of effort (< 20 lines of mostly copy+pasted code).
Next stand up, I'm contemplating calling him out on the BS, but I suspect he had working code for a while. Wouldn't be the first time he has dragged his ass working on a project until folks get fed up waiting and he has an "intellectual breakthrough" and brags how all his effort was worth the time. Similar to the firefighter who starts fires just so he can 'be the hero'.1
Fucking Huawei have stopped giving out codes for unlocking the bootloader of their devices. You can't even get one by messaging their support.
Now you can't even root Huawei phones anymore unless you pay for some very sketchy looking software.
people that answer a question with another fucking irrelevant question should have a special place in hell !!
why dont you just answer the fucking question when in the first place i asked you politely and nicely !!
the question doesn't even deserve a fucking follow up question in the first place !!
you've wasted both our time with your stupidity!!8
Be me, wanting to try out PyOpenGL.
Lets start by drawing a rectangle.
And now add some text?!
NOPE CANT RENDER FROM TTF OR SOME OTHER STUPID SHIT! YOU NEED TO CREATE A BITMAP FONT. WHICH IS THE MOST INEFFECTIVE BS IVE EVER SEEN.
K but there is surely a library for Python which enables the usage of text in OpenGL? Yes but its last support was 12 years ago.
FFS WHAT IS THIS GARBAGE?
At the end i found out cpp uses freetype to convert each character of a font to a bitmap with the according spacing.
THIS SHOULD BE WAY SIMPLER!5
dont you love when you go to a site
DIRECTLY - to that site
and the first thing youre greeted with is an ad or email sign up - FOR THAT SITE?
what kind of fuking UI is that? what kind of marketing is that?
i just went to YOUR site. don't throw fuking ads and nonsense at me in some pop-up form where i can't interact with your page without clicking the "X" to close it.5
Ugh, I hate this stupid F*!
There's this new guy who's much older and thinks he's a such a f'ing hotshot that he undermines everything I worked on to drop in some a** backwards BS. Luckily I don't have to work with him often, only one day a week - else I would go nuts! He constantly name drops this same company, with little disregard for others younger than him.
Bitch, I'm close to 20 years younger than you and yet I've worked for a much longer list of much more respected companies. I've worked with legal teams on intellectual property, ran my own business, and have multiple patents. Did you ask me once my background? No, because your a selfish prick and an asshole. That's why you're likely in a mid life crisis, single, and alone. Fuck you!3
I fucking hate eclipse, dude. I just started learning java EE and shit, and right now I'm learning all the stuff about JSP and Servlets, and when I create a new JSP/HTML file this bitch just gets crashed if I click something before it completes generating the file. Now, I know that it's not a big deal and shit, but I experience extreme butthurt when stuff like this bs happens. Normally I wouldn't whine about this, but I just discovered this website so I decided to write it down n whatnot lmao.8
-.- after the bs with amazon. they now say my item would arrive after i told them i would move. also said it'd arrive way out of prime 2days so...fuck yourselves amazon. eat a dick11
Ok fellow dev's, the engineering head said that he had to let me go because apparently I'm a very talented engineer but I have a bad attitude. All of this because he claims I don't seem too interested in meetings and all that bs.
So from Monday on it's Knowledge transfer time since major parts of our product have been written by me.Wish the head had some balls, and told me he was firing me because I wont suck up to him and be a yes man, bastard thinks you can hire and fire good dev's just like that (he can) .Plus he has never appreciated folks for the effort and the work they do. :(4
I'm tired, but in a good way.
I love my new job. I don't care if I have no more flexitime privileges anymore the vibe at work is pleasant and the only thing I stress about is code right now. Not exposed to any of that C-level BS.3
Boss finds new chinese supplier for the lcds we use and tells me to make one work so we can see the new quality. All is good.. the lcd works. But at some point I start seeing some defects. Pretty annoying defects.
Boss tells me to explain the defects to the chinese engineers so that they can either fix it or tell us if we did something wrong. So I do it. I explain everything in detail as one engineer to another.
An hour after I submit the email I get called. The boss is furious that the email is bs. His reasons .. " We are working with cheap-ass chinese. None of their engineers know english. How do you expect anyone to understand all that stuff you said?!"
ffs.. i had to dumb it down to 5th grade english..1
When managements' response is repeatedly, "we are working on it" - don't count on it anytime soon.1
Reply to a recruiter today quoting her email:
You will end up with more qualified people if you don't use blatantly fictitious statements like. "While it's not often that I like to email people I don' t know (especially those in different cities!)" You're a recruiter using LinkedIn, the activity of recruiting is partially doing exactly the above.
No interest, have a good day.
Like an idiot I decided to continue to grad school directly after finishing my undergrad (which I finished later than usual because I switched from a different major) only because my university has a pretty big deep learning lab with important professors.
After a year in, I realized that academia isn't that interesting to me and I'm nearing 30 with no real job experience so I'm hesitant to drop out for fear of not being able to find a job. Meanwhile, I'm dreading every morning when I have to go to the lab and do some BS experiments instead of being out there building stuff. I bought the hype and now I'm stuck.3
So my father asked me what I think about filemaker. I researched, while we were waiting for the food (restaurant) bs holy fuck, I've never gotten this bad vibes from a from something I believe to be a scripting language.
> proprietary (Apple)
> only articles I found about it were related to LinkedIn or at least written like they were
> not a single text based tutorial on the first pages of the search result, only videos (didn't watch them, because my mobile data is too scared for that)
> I can't find anything remotely explaining what this shit is about.
wikipedia was the most best resource I could find
> Free ebook about "how to train your junior developer" for filemaker requires me to enter way too much personal information.2
Kinda funny story:
Yesterday i was just flashing my phone when suddenly my main system decided to crash (phone wasint connected to it, heck, i wasint even touching that motherfucker) so guess what? My system turned into bluescreen moster that isint even able to boot. I tryed entering safemode but i had no luck....
So ive reinstalled it... BUT GUESS FUCKING WHAT?!?! True key has dual authentification system for which i had to confirm acess from my phone or email to which i had no acess since ive flashed my phone.... And then i had to deal with that bs2
Working continuously on a task for like 3 hrs, cant get it done
*goes out, mind refreshed and completes the same task in 5 mins*1
"It's very unfortunate that someone has to sit 10 hours a day on a computer screen but that's what we are paying for."
Working with an EU client.
Task is in stages beginning from assessment of an 9 year old Salesforce instance, cleanup and then transition to lightning.
The deliverabale in the first stage is excel sheet - objects(2400+), fields, apps, packages, profiles(110k), users, perm sets, apex classes, triggers, pages, s-controls and insert each and everything that a Salesforce instance could have.
Each and every data needs to be, analyzed and documented with our recommendations before being sent over. (Finding duplicates in 110k profiles??)
Oh, did I tell you, this was to be done four weeks? Weekend goes to hell.
That's when this beautiful motivational line comes up from the bridge, "It's very unfortunate that someone has to sit 10 hours a day on a computer screen but that's what we are paying for."
Fortunately(un?), that part of project is done and over with.
Now comes the clean up, identify packages not being used, remove them, qa and then push for deployment.
Mind you, this project is to be 2 weeks long. Its Friday of the first week today. And I am still working weekends.
Can I say, FML?5
[!dev]Got a random recruiter email looking for an associate non-Dev role at Amazon. Reading it out of boredom, when I hit red flags.
Candidate will meet aggressive deadlines for "high priority deliverables" while "working autonomously". Sounds like a recipe for failure. Maybe even disaster.
If Amazon's factory floor horror stories are anything to go by, I'm willing to nope out on this. Can't imagine the level of prescreening BS I'll encounter.
I remember going to associate training to work in an Apple store. It was full of "sideways talk". Felt like I was going to join a cult. Noped out on that, too.
Folks, always read between the lines, then get a second pair of eyes on said lines.1
Fuck me I'm pissed. This sprint, my tech lead has been away and a senior dev has been covering for him. We plan a load of work and distribute stories and we churn threw it quite well. However, my senior dev says let's not deploy until all the works done. I was like, how is it going to be tested? He was like well it will be fine because it's all one test. Bs. We now have 2 days left, tester is getting stressed because they don't know what to test or what's been finished. Scrum master is asking why all of it should be tested at the same time and I'm here like this is fucking dumb. Also the tester decided to start testing with the most complex piece of work, rather than prioritising.
Starting to wonder if I'm just the outsider or whether no one understands that granularity is better.2
I spent about 45 mins this morning going through memes and gaming videos till my workstation finished doing updates.
On one side: fuck updates, what in the holy fuck.
On the other side: fuck yeah, down time to do bs.
I ain't even gonna bitch about Microsoft. It is what it is. Legit no complaints.
Just wish the process was maybe a lil bit similar to Debian updates maybe. Just maybe.11
So i informed my intent to leave the job in few months in pursuit of learning something new in tech. Boss is trying to convince me to not leave and said i should consider learning it after work hours. In fact, in his opinion, the best way to learn is just going ahead and learning it while doing it in the project ( which usually has impossible deadline and fugly code by colleagues who never thinks of good coding practices when typing their shit ).
Well guess what boss, I don't want to just live a life staring at monitor all day. I don't want to kill my eyes either.
Following his advise and not quitting would mean living a slave life.
I have other plans actually. Like being self employed and traveling the world which would be impossible if i follow the routine life.
Fun fact: he claimed he made an AI car back in 90s!
He also thinks I can't sense BS!😏2
Watched a co-worker configure a new "MacBook pro" as a replacement for the four-year-old one this personcurrently has. A replacement machine is justified as the old one is on the fritz... Naturally because MacBooks aren't any better than any other machine, build quality or otherwise. I still cannot fathom why anyone would even consider budgeting over $3000 for a single machine, only to then buy several adapters just to make the thing work.
Apple is off the deep end. People who fall for that BS are off the deep end.
I feel like showing the manager several alternative models at half the price just to make the point that MacBooks are a pointless waste of money.4
We were 4 dudes developing this little disposable material management system for a course in college, and we had to write documentation and present on the last day of class. Second week into the course and one dude goes rouge, not taking phonecalls nor replying to messages, just goes to class and does not get together with us to make progress. Neddless to say the other three of us had to do all the work. Fast forward to last day, all of us wondering where this dude could be. He shows up 6 mins before the presentation, already late, reads like 3 pages of the doc, and decides he will be the lead presenter.
>Mfw he takes over and starts bs'ing the whole thing.
>Mfw he mentions the possibility of the system to be extrapolated to manage salami in a butchery.
>Mfw the professor seemed to have swallowed all that bs like cake.
>Mfw we get an A, including him.
>Mfw I have no face4
TFW you call BS on a client/colleague's actions, they concede and you feel guilty for confroting them.
Well, it happened. They ripped me off...
They promissed the world and they delivered nothing.
All bets are off. From now on, I am not responsible for my actions.7
Awful idea of the day - Have a programming language with no comments, but regex preprocessor macros. Use macros to define your own comment syntax and strip them before compiling.
Did you ever take advantage of clients that has less computer literacy? Like have you ever escape a bug in the system by telling the client heavy technical BS! 😋
PS - fixings that bug later obviously!!7
I specified a requirement where certain bits in a certain message shall be evaluated for certain items. The tester came up to me and talked some BS about how to guesstimate these bits by totally different bits. I said, look up the interface definition, the bits are there. Got an email, same BS. Tester was just too lazy to look it up. So I answered that message ID X has bits 60-63 for the four relevant items.
However, I carefully avoided telling him which bit was for which item so that he knew what it was, but I still forced him to look up the inter fucking face definition.
There's something super broken about the interview process in our industry. I spent 30 minutes chatting with a hr recruiter. 2 hours on a coding screen. 1 hour for a technical interview. 1 hour talking with the head of engineering. But then they decided to pass on me. Well if things went well then, then I spend an entire fucking day on an onsite.
Wow. Since when did the industry get so bloated until we have to do so much to get a job? Is signal really that unclear so candidates have to jump through hoop after hoop?
(rant) -> !rant
Wrote a long ass email to our stupid client explaining why the fucking feature he's draining our souls for is useless. With technical reasons, benchmarks, links to references, alternatives... and with the approval of our manager.
He replies with "no, this is not approved". With no will to discuss anything.
I go down to my manager, blood boiling, and told him that I cannot deal with that sort of arrogance. I did all I could to properly explain what a fucking twig would've understood.
Turned out my manager has already replied defending us. Just didn't want to get us involved in the bs.1
Do you need a degree to become a software engineer ?
Now this is a question I’ve seen many people ask. I personally have no degree and I’ve been doing programming for the past 10 years (since I was 18 ). Whatever I learned, I learned from reading and watching tutorials.
So far It wasn’t a problem for me.
What do u guys think and what is your experience is this matter ?9
My last job in Australia before moving to Japan was where I had my best boss. He was pretty chill about a lot of things and he was also a pilot and DJ in his free time. But he was also the no BS type of guy and would help resolve issues in a quick manner.
Also before moving to Japan, I did consult him about it and he was very supportive about it and encouraged me to do the move as it'd be a good experience for me.2
Not 1 Business Unit in Company: We need this feature immediately.
My Team: Anyone object to this 2 hour old merge request?
Me: Well, yeah, I found a couple things that we should probably go ahead and address.
My Team: we'll fix that in a future release
Me: But you said that last release...
My Boss: MR Accepted
Also My Boss: Can you make a new user story to fix this?1
It is approximately 42 degrees C outside. And guess whose fucking compressor just went to shit? Mine. Fucking piece of shit. I absolutely fucking hate this shit. Finding the time to go to the shop is pointless when I can fix it myself, but IN the fucking event that the compressor is actually faulty and needs to be replaced then I would have to struggle to wait for the fucking part to get here. If my luck permits and this is an issue that is fixable through a simple relay change then fucking hooray.
But I know how fucking shitty my fucking luck is and its going to fuck me in the ass probably. I will troop through the heat, no problem, but I am the one that carries my 2 year old daughter everywhere and I am not about to put her through that bullshit.
So I call my wife and explain to her the situation, I don't need for her to do fucking anything, I can take care of it myself, but I tell her NOT to have me go out on random bullshit with the girl while the car is like that, I did it to make her understand beforehand because every day is an additional 1 and a half hours of driving around the city to take her do bullshit. I told her that in the event of me needing to go pick something up then it would have to be after the fucking sun goes out(which in this fucking bullshit ass town it happens after fucking 7 or 7:30pm) and she would have to stay home with the girl. What does she do? she gets upset. Of course she got fucking upset. Like if I need that fucking bs right now. OH and my fucking main Linux machine is apparently having battery issues.
OAN my manager gave me my performance review yesterday. The she made are outstanding and my score is perfect. The board is going to give a raise to everyone of us that got an high enough score so that got me in a good mood. I am holding on to that feeling before I lose my shit. Every single fucking time some bs puts me in this mood I am constantly wishing that a motherfucker would.
Fucking bullshit man. Can't have a FUCKING break anyfuckingwere.
This just in on an episode of Murphy's fucking law.4
So Microsoft thought it was a great idea to force-install updates and restart my Window Server 2016.
Please, Microsoft. It's time to stop.6
Being a "WordPress-Developer" is like calling yourself a toy manufacturer while selling "individually glued" lego models.2
that BS thing you do when your too lazy to code and just copied a code from an existing class and renamed the vars even if it does not work or not being used just to show your boss that your working hard as f*2
Stop turning off the monitors. That doesn't sign you out or turn off the computer, it just makes the next person wonder what's taking so long.1
After completing urgent projects that rewrite a lot of "overtime" or even personal projects that rewrite like a few weeks to complete.
Old web dev days pre-BS... All the CSS needed to and the cross browser compat. The divs don't align... Can't get elements to center... Or it does, just not in browser X...1
If I had some reliable metric to measure bullshit per file, let's call it BPF, I believe the number would be highest on average for files named "gulpfile.js"1
I can't stand how big tech companies treat you like a child. Every fucking team bonding activity is more childlike than the other.
Its like they are about to bundle crayons and pizza next time you are on crunch.4
Inherited a trainwreck of a site with multiple CSS files. The deadline for changes was BS. No time to remove unused rules, so I left a sorry note for the next dev.3
The mass surveillance thingy in the Netherlands is not something I want to do with, so I'm thinking of moving my droplets to London as I heard Germany might also implement something similar. I have two DO droplets that are relatively easy to transfer but I'm open to suggestions, should I move them?7
I use a DasKey Ultimate with blank keycaps at work and people always ask how the hell I can work with that board. I recently bought a Happy Hacking Pro for my tablet/laptop and I must ask the same question to those who daily drive these..
How the fuck do you deal with this retarded layout??
I used the dip switches to at least change the Del to BS but the physical key is stupid small, the control key position is just idiotic and no dedicated arrows? I use VIM and my work desktop is Linux and I come from a UNIX background. Still makes no sense.
i needed to get a dvi/hdmi converter and amazon fuked me, again (big surprise) so i went to monoprice
specifically asked "subscribe to promotional emails?" NO - NO i don't fricking want that
email: "order recv"
"more order bs"
"youve been subscribed!"
wtf? NO! i said fucking NO! don't just ignore it you bastards
(i guess this is better than the alternative of usualaly getting suked into it and not knowing til you get emails down the road, but fuk off, miss me with that shit)2
"Hey before we launch, can you reintroduce that bug you fixed on Friday? The other team needs it for debugging."
Why the fuck would you need debugging code in production and why the fuck do we want to readd something that was causing problems? Shaping up to be a great week already.
Oh Lord, I forgot how bad windows and the proprietary applications made for it are... 10 years on Linux and it just keeps raising the bar, but I feel like Win is getting worse! Why do companies pay for this bs, if it has zero advantage over any os!? no reason devs need to have the same exact computers as everyone else in the company, it's just so... inefficient, maybe if we had something better, with yknow, less latency, less "not responding" when all I did was click minimize, Linux is free, I think one of the 200,000+ employees can figure it tf out, then maybe they wouldn't have to cut the per diem to $40 a day...
...This is my life without a tiling wm, just sucks 😭4
Got my new pc up and running, asrock x370 killer sli/ac mobo, ryzen 2200g cpu and radeon rx550 with 12g ram (don't ask). Nothing fancy but sure beats my old am2 system! New pc is so quiet :D9
i received a job offer to work at area 51 on extremely sophisticated projects primarily as a c++ engineer. this is the highest pay offer i have ever seen, which i can not discuss right now, but what else to expect when you work for the government. i have bad perception about this. should i take this job or refuse?5
So I'm at this gaming event to enter in a small game I have been working on with fellow teammates. As an OOP, does anyone find the following conversation hmmm, odd?
Guy: I program for Microsoft!
Me: That's great! What's your favorite syntax?
Guy: I don't want to get into that? Me(inMyHead): 🙄😂😂😂👍🏾4
Just found out that I have been reassigned to maintain an in house shitty project... It's full of crap code, no documentation, has lot of duct tapes to keep the project together and 20+ open bugs and issues...
I am so happy with my current project. But my manager is always pissed off at me for no apparent reason.
Fuck this shit... Any excuse or advice to dodge this BS project? Can't quit job, I am getting payed alot here.7
I have homework for tomorrow, so when i get home i say to myself "right, let's get this homework bs over with". What really happens is i sit down at my pc, power on my VM and keep on tweaking and improving my simple python browser. A few hours later it's already 9PM and i havn't started with my homework. So, it's now 10:30PM and I'm writing a pressentation about traveling and browsing devRant at the same time.
Not getting a lot done. I guess homework isn't my thing....2
I got accepted into the University of Washington BS Computer Science & Software Engineering program today! It's been a long road since starting ITT Tech 3 years agofor a BAS in SDEV, it closing on me, starting all the way over at community college, maintaining a 4.0, and now a bootcamper at Coding Dojo. Now only at least 2 more years to go! 😁🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃😩1
We have to talk about TechLead, having ads all over YouTube that say if you follow their guide you can earn a $200k salary grad job.
devrant needs a bs emote too2
Seriously, all these FB groups have bunch of newb members and content creator whores who spam them with these links to their "Free source code VB6 shit", "Inventory System using PHP", and all those sorts of BS.
When was the last time you went to FB to learn something?
And also, some of these folks post their works when they only glued these libraries or some kind of API thingy together made by awesome people yet they get the praise from these kidds!1
Does the windows "optimization" feature which apparently is defragmenting in the background, and apparently "optimizing" ssd's differently of any use? The only thing I notice is that this function makes the icons of my desktop reload on a regular basis. My guts tell me it's utter bs and is just slowing down the system.
Any experiences, optinions, thoughts?6
People, finally back with a rant😌
You definitely have heard about the new privacy policies in the EU. What do you guys think about this BS?
Who the actual fuck has come up with such trash? Politicians can be such dumbfucks sometimes wtf..😐🤔18
participating at an coding challenge.
the mission is to write an game solver for an game engine - in java. based on astar, pathfinding should be made possible by cloning objects.
never seen a so hardly misconcepted challenge, where character instances and their variables are static and contain uncloneable data😂 oh god what a waste of time realizing this bs1
For some reason, my roommate thinks Facebook can track his and all our calls.
I don't know the beginning or the end of what they can/can't do, but that just has to be BS... right?15
This kind of BS makes me mad
" - The password must have 6 digits
- It must have at most 2 repeated digits and 3 sequentials"
RIGHT, because 293417 is SO much safer than 999123
Btw, this is a phone company, so with this password you could probably have access to someone's phone number, phone records, address, and much more. WTF2
Those anyone has created a Chrome theme?
Dunno if Im a dumbass or there is no fucking documentation.. I have seen old forums of ppl coursing google for making it so difficult (apart from the standard upload a picture bs)3
As a junior dev, i really appreciate these wk58 rants. Every time i begin to doubt my abilities, i get some insights into the work of past geniuses, and i feel like im doing pretty good for a rookie
Well, I love react-native and how easy to build mobile app with it. but damn look at these folder sizes jeez1
It pisses me off so much when companies sell their products with non standardized charging ports. I bought a no name beard trimmer some time ago, lost the charger and obviously I cant find a replacement because I have no fucking clue what connector it is. The description of the trimmer mentions nothing. Fucking bs that is! -__-"
I just have to vent somewhere about how I'm SO DAMN SICK of the effin' cross-realm BS in World of Warcraft. Nothing breaks immersion like having to stand in line for some mob with 10 min respawn timer. I joined a low-pop server for a reason!!!
//not quite a rant?
I actually like my manager. They're pretty awesome... All things considered...
But they have absolutely no idea what I do...
What I can't stand is when someone "name drops" a company they previously worked at. Such as, "...back when I worked at <insert Xxxsoft>" or "At <so and so place> we did things differently..."
We get it, your résumé is impressive. But it especially peeves me when they've been working at their current job for over a year and still mentions their old jobs.
1. I also worked at <XXXX-place> and it wasn't all that impressive.
2. If it was SO great, why aren't YOU still working there?2
My hard drive made a short sort of grinding noise today and the machine didn't post but didn't turn off. Turned it off and on again. Everything is fine. Trying to develop and everything is just throwing the most random bs errors I'd ever seen.
Turns out somehow many, many, many directories became corrupted. Couldn't even run a check disk and half of windows broke.
Just thought I'd share that since I've never seen anything like it.1
sport event bookingapp for android, ios and blackberry. 3 weeks. we finished. client wasnt happy with the colors and sued us and we won. I left the company because of that bs deadlines.2
Pills. Failing that, everything everyone else has said... if you find yourself procrastinating too much, get medicated.
On top of that, routine, regiment and willpower.
I started learning Russian recently, trying for the second time. This time around, I found that the small positive reward gamification elements of Dualingo to be a great help (Streaks and daily bonus BS currency).
I've also found myself using Trello to list out things I need or want to do to stop from overwhelming myself. If I have a new task or thing I need to do whilst I'm already getting something else done, I note it down and then forget about it until it's time to find something new to get done.
If all else fails, then look at yourself. Take a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror. I became good at this through necessity, after illness and injury I realised that there's no time for chronic procrastination. If your life expectancy halved what would you change and how quickly?
If you still can't fix it, I'm guessing it's not as big a problem as you think it is... enjoy yourself!
React Native is BS for Android. Outdated as hell Gradle builds (1.x for certain plugins I mean wtf) and it targets outdated SDK and build tools... Why no simply code for system your software is meant to work :P
In seriousness, I get the concept of build once deploy on all platforms ala Electron but better but hell why is the tooling so outdated?1
Let me start this off by stating I'm a Java dev, and a noob with C++.
Thought it'd be cool to learn some OpenCL, since I want to do some maths stuff and why not learn something new.
So I sat down, installed Nvidia proprietary drivers, broke my x-org server, purged, reinstalled, rebooted and after a while I got stuff sorted out.
Then on to my IDE. I use CLion and it uses Cmake. C++ noob knows shit about Cmake, so struggle for two hours trying to figure out wtf is going on with the OpenCL libs and why they're only partially detected. Fml.
Finally, everything is configured and I'm set. I start working on a Hello World program using OpenCL. Finish it in 20 mins, all good. No output. Do some googling, check my program a million times. Nothing wrong here. Check the kernel, everything as in the tutorial.
I start checking error codes after a while reported by OpenCL (which I had no clue was a thing) and I get some code saying the program was not created properly (to run the kernel). No fucking clue what's up with that. Google around, find another tutorial, rewrite my code in case I'm using outdated code or something. Nothing.
Fast forward an hour, I find out that OpenCL has logs! So I grab some code from the website I found it on, and voila, I finally get some info on what's going on.
Get a load of this bs.
In the kernel file, so that OpenCL knows that it's a function to run, you have to put __kernel. But in all the places I read, it said to put it as _kernel.
Add the underscore, compile, run and everything is perfect.
Then I tried just putting 'kernel'. Also compiles and runs fine.
Two hours hours and my program was fixed by adding an underscore. IF ONLY C++ GAVE AN INDICATION OF WHAT BLEW UP INSTEAD OF SITTING BACK AND BEING LIKE "oh wow man feels bad, work some magic and try again" THEN THIS WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN SO LONG.
Then again, it was OpenCL that was being shitty with its styling enforcement or whatever the hell the underscore business is. But screw it. C++ eats shit too for this. Sure, maybe Java babies you by giving you the exact error and position that the error took place at. But at least that way you don't waste hours of your life chasing invisible bugs 😠😠
I'm going to eat some food... Too much energy was consumed fighting the system... Then I'll get back to OpenCL because 😇 but that doesn't make it less bs.1
Anyone here has any experience with buying shit from STMicroelectronics? Requested a fucking account like an hour ago and their shit confirmation email has not gotten to me yet.
Any other sites y'all would recommend for getting their shit? This bs is getting ridiculous...for a company whose fucking assets are worth billions to take this fucking long to send a confirmation email.
Fucking Adafruit took nada to send me the shit i wanted. Fucking hell man.4
Pitching against people that BS their way though everything but will ultimately be picked because they offer to do it for 0.01 per hour.1
Typical insurance company BS approach.
Listening to xmas music, Spotify ad kicks in about 'just being "hacked"':
Buy our cyber security insurance product to quickly recover and retain liquidity in case of a cyber security beach.
Not a single word about preventing the incidents in the first place...
Lucky to work in a place that doesn't skimp on IT.5
DevRant might not be a perfect place for that question but what the hell.
This is a question for people that do side projects, not only programming but electronic and mechanical as well. If you are a student even better.
(I dont wanna discourage non students but i have limited resources here...)
So the question:
While making a project have you ever had a problem where a limited access to tools was the problem?
(maybe tools was here but nobody wanted to borrow you because of paperwork or some bs.)
I mean that you had a idea or was in middle of a project and you didnt finished/(finished but in crappy condition) because lack of proper tools didnt allow you to?
I realy need your opinion on that subject, i have a nice idea i just have to test the waters.
And please tell me if you are a student or not.8
Tfw you're done with dealing with idiotic bug reports ("Game crashed pls fix", "Not working pls fix", like that) you force the bug reporters to read a copy-pasted version of Simon Tatham's Bug Reporting Guide (https://chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgt...) on a page before going to the bug reporting page and set a minimum of 100 words in the bug report filter just to filter the BS.

faking it -.-
can't stand it. ima tell you what's bs. i'm not gona pretend like i care about your sports, house painting, car wax, w/e the fuk.
sry, not sry
I have become so fed up with the BS people say that now if someone gives me an advice, I do the exact opposite just to fuck with them.4
Anybody else really annoyed at all these people getting mad at zuckerburg? Like, I've always questioned privacy of the internet in general. If you're dumb enough to put sensitive info on the internet (especially on social media) then you shouldn't have the right to complain about privacy. It's your responsibility to protect your information.4
rant && what do you think?
so one of our ISP (Orange Slovakia) had troubles with service for like two days. Their DNS servers translated domains to IPs reaaally slow or not at all. So when i saw the dns error in chrome (yes i use chrome and not quantum) I changed my dns to google dns and ignored it.
Two days later when the service was back up and running, this ISP went to the local media and made a statement "we had a DDOS attack, no user data were harmed, blabla" that was when my BS radar went bananas... so somebody DDOSd your DNS server ... for two fucking days straight... this is probably a lie or they have really noob engineers (or both).
I'm not an expert on network services or routing, or servers but, how about turning off this server, IP and setting up a backup on a different IP ? Possibly anyone here with experience how to handle DDOS? Whats the chance of this happening? i'm really curious23
How many of you have managers who grill their employees for coming late?
Maybe it's just me being downright lazy but I've always had this idea that working for a tech company would mean flexible timings and no fixed minimum working hours (as long as you meet your deadlines and get the job done).
I've been working for this small AI/CV startup for about 10 months now and my manager/founder's nephew, who is my age(22) keeps grinding me for not coming on time. I'm not really a morning person (and my productivity decreases significantly whenever I wake up early) but I make sure I meet my deadlines.
Initially, I used to avoid all this BS but now it has started to annoy me. Suggestions?10
I'm currently having a problems sleeping my inner philosopher just keeps thinking about various things. I wanna try to write some of them down as an simply to see what will happen.
I'll write my opinion down as honest as possible so feel free to disagree, but point out what I should rethink, if you want me to consider it.
To me respect has to be earned. I think especially on the internet many people try to skip this crucial step when they try to get respect. Most often when they want an opinion or their ideals to be respected. Most of the time it doesn't even feel like they want to be respected, but rather accepted.
There's nothing wrong with accepted in my opinion, but there are several approaches to get to this point and I despise some of them.
Earning acceptance by earning respect is one of the right ways to do it. Working hard towards your goals, showing your individual strength, standing behind your ideals. These are things I can respect.
I should also mention that these Ideals should be concrete, based on rational thought and a general good will or you will just twist my words to say that I support e.g. IS, Stalin's politics ect.
On a side node, I think it'd be wrong to disrespect everything Stalin did, since, from an economical point of view, he pushed Russia forward by quite a bit.
Then on the other side I see crybabies. People who want to be accepted, without putting effort in their ideals. Most of the time not even aiming for acceptance through respect, but through pity. Honestly, that's all they're going to get from me.
Pity, for their petty ideals.
Basically all I ever see these people doing is attention whoring and practicing multiple deadly sins at once.
Wrath, jealousy, sloth, pride, greed and optionally also gluttony.
Lust is rather a separate package. When I think about it, I link it mostly to horny teens and "send bob and vegane" type of stuff.
Gluttony being powered by sloth or vice versa, enhancing it.
The clear image I have in mind, while I write about this packages of deadly sins however, is that of a jealous person, complaining / getting angry about something they could change change themselves, but want them to be changed for them. Mostly through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and whatever the fuck Tumblr is supposed to be.
"I wanna be rich, why is <person> richt but I'm not? This world is so unfair 😡". Have you tried working towards becoming rich?
"I don't don't feel pretty. Accept me". Accept yourself. Done.
"I don't like <person or organization>'s doing". If that's the whole message, all you probably did so far is complaining or crying. Sweet tears.
Stuff like that can happen to any person, just like any person makes mistakes.
Mistakes are made to learn from them. If you realize realize and accept your mistakes others may do so as well and forgive you.
But we are he towards this idiotic trend where people just can swallow their pride even for microscopic things. They instead push their pride to higher levels of ignorance, blaming other people, l(ying)mfao, creating black holes of density in the process. Makes me wonder whether their real motive is an inside bet on who can get the most people to kill them selves by face palming.
Most of my life I have been fairly protected against these people, besides some spikes of incompetence, but recently the have invaded 2 areas in my world that make the world somewhat less of a pain. Programming and the internet culture.
Yes, I'm talking about that master / slave BS renaming and article 11 and 13.
The remaking itself isn't really the problem, but rather the context. This was basically a show of power for the self proclaimed "social justice warriors" or SJW for short.
The fact that this madness has spread. That's what worries me. To me it feels like the first zombie has spawned.
Then we have this corrupted piece of incompetent shit, called Axel Voss, and other old farts.
They live in a galaxy far away from reality, somewhere in the European Parlament, making laws they don't know shit about, regulating things they know shit about.
All in the name of the people of the EU of course. And by people we obviously talk about the money.
I can honestly not think of another reason, after reading the replies Voss and his party gave on Twitter regarding the shit they pulled off.
Well, at least none that doesn't involve some firm of brain death.
For now I'll show them as much as possible how much I despise / reject them. Currently playing with the thought of some kind (social media?) website were posts from other sites or actions in general can be rated only with "Fuck you"s.
Given these articles, I should not have them hosted in an European country though 😅.
Almost hitting that 5k character limit 😰2
!rant or at least not dev related
I work at a school. Sometimes we get some weird training and shit we have to attend to. This time it had to do with what to do in the event of an active shooter.
Because you know. The U.S IS full of angry white kids with guns that if fucked up enough will just take fire on people.
Well, as a military veteran. I feel pretty confident in knowing what to do when some asshole is trying to get his expert marksman badge on me. So i requested not to waste my valuable time on such bs. I was promptly denied and encouraged to attend the bs training.
The first dumbshit thing they tell you to do is to turn the lights off and hide(if you decide to not fight) for which I mentioned that it would not work.
You see. Our entire buildings have motion sensors on each room which would TURN the fucking lights on if you move........ and even though you can turn the switch on..some offices would still work through the motion sensor....exhibit A: my office.
Fuck this. Couldn't i just keep one of my guns with me?? It would just take about 2 shoots really....and I promise they would stay in.
This sucks man. I need to move to Canadia. I don't want my kids having to hear about "mandatory active shooter training"
That fucking bullshit should never be a norm.
10 bucks and a life says i have better aim than some crazy kid.10
Documentayion my ass!
Whoever wrote that documentation for qutebrowser: You fucking apathetic shit nugget, you have a fucking feature over there and all you do to fucking document is to hide it within a indifferent example? How the fuck am I supposed to configure that shit if it isn't even mentioned wheresoever? You're example simply assumes that the reader has all the background knowledge and nostly lack relevance as much as IT in my highschool. Read that shit yourself and tepl me if you can find out how to configure this BS3
Disclamer: I don't want to give out what app I am talking about, so all names will be random to just represent the nonsense and my frustration.
So I was working with that app's API....
To begin with, some retrieved Objects have collection (iterable structure) of "Thing" objects, called "Things". But... there can be max one element in that particular collection!
Ok... I get it... I might exaggerate a bit... fine, let it be.
I had to mention it for the further part, and also got to mention that "Thing" objects are globally available and predefined, and Objects can only choose one, unused "Thing".
To the point.
Someone thought it would be good to separate representation of one structure into two classes.
We have collection of "A" objects ("As"), which have "Name", "Things" and other, mostly GUI/config related attributes.
Collection "Bs", of "B" objects, they have "Name" and rather lower-level attrs.
The "As" and their attributes can be set in the GUI, but the list where you do it is named "List of Bs" and vice versa.
I had to use both "A" and "B" definition for given name, so I tried to map it... and things gone South.
Collecions have "Get" method with name as an argument.
But it turns out that while the "A" use its GUI name all the time, "B" uses either name that can be found in "As" or, if not all "Thing" objects are used, the "Thing" names.
global "Things" = "t0", "t1"
"As" = "a0"("t0"), "a1"("t1") -> "Bs" == "a0", "a1"
"As" = "a0"("t0"), "a1"() -> "Bs" == "a0", "t1"
"As" = "a0"(), "a1"() -> "Bs" == "t0", "t1"
That means if at least one of "A" objects have empty "Things", then the mapping will fail.
Only solution is that the app works only partially when any of "A"'s "Things" is empty, so I might raise error too, but I have to provide solution that will work even in the cases when the app don't care... so... not gonna happen.2
so there was this issue regarding our company's system which tends to be a problem for sometime now, its a recurring issue caused by the data that the users needs to encode to the system
today another issue arised, our senior supervisor, not knowing that this issue was already recurring and there is already a documented step procedure on how to address it, suggested or come up with a another solution which would task one of our co-developer to push a temporary code to production during business hours just to accommodate the issue and rollback the code after
take note that its during business hours and more than a hundreds of branches of the company are using the said system
what was he thinking !!
thankfully one of our colleagues voiced out explaining that this issue was already recurring and already has a procedural solution, but still our brainy-know-it-all-stubborn-close-minded heck of a supervisor insisted that the solution has computational impact and still insisted that they push a temporary code to the production, what an idiot!!
fast forward our colleagues ended up standing their ground, even if our supervisor is highly doubtful at them, and executed the already established solution instead of pushing a temporary code to the production which was such a bullshit idea
damn those close minded people they shouldn't have reach that position in the first place!!
Trying to update yarn from choco.
It didn't detect npm-lts
Got BS by install npm 9.8.0
Nothing is working right now 🤦♂️
I wanna go to gym. But it's 1clock past midnight right now.
God damn it1
The offizial guide to install Tensorflow(Python) on windows is BS. The stackoverflow solution only adds the package, but it wouldn't work.
Time to build it myself...
Microsoft with the fucking number 10. The Great Windows 7 was in 2009. Windows 10, after 2010. Xbox One, after 2010. Windows 10, 10. 2015, Xbox music was rebranded to *drumroll* fucking Groove music. Now Windows 10's new UI is advertised as a sneak peek with Groove Music open on Desktop. Microsoft, if we want to listen to music we have Youtube, youtube2mp3, and if we are really desperate, Spotify (which is actually pre decent). Fuck you Microsoft, once again.30
I'm about to finish college and can't decide if the small company with less pay but good work environment is better than the corporation with better pay but more bureaucratic BS (or so I've heard). What does devRant prefer?
For my BS, I paid people $70-90 to write essays for GE classes..
Is this wrong of me? Should I have written that paper about earthquakes myself?5
I am reading third book
“The Cult of Fog Island” and now I am 100% sure that shitting on employees and micromanagement are forms of cult and sect.
People who do it are narcissistic dumb fucks just wanting to lick CEO or their own ass and get prize for what they didn’t do.
Well fuck them I hope they burn in hell.
Somebody please explain to Microsoft Win 10 team that normal usage of a computer should just work, home users don't have hours on end to spend on dealing with:
- BS sound drivers
- high CPU usage & diagnosing, log tracing from system processes
- many other crap you need to invest time constantly fixing or you don't have a useful machine
Windows 10 is a piece of shit7
Why must FacebookSDK be on ~/Documents?? ~/Documents are for... documents, not some random developer software development kit bs. Please put proper guide on your documentation...
Developers don’t have access to the test database so I had to put in a request for a dba to add two columns and it took over two hours for them to complete it.5
For fucks sake newbies, please read the guidelines of the mailing list before mindlessly sending your BS to everyone!!! Ffffs!!1
Do you have a programmers union in your country?
In my country we have a general union for all different kinds of jobs and a engineers union. Maybe if developers had a dev union there would perhaps be less bs12
What are your thoughts on higher education? Does a having a BS, MS, or PhD really make a difference?15
-I have a project to finish due next week from an interview i had and i mentioned that i want a server side role, i am more of a PHP & MySQL (laravel).
-Also told them i am not very good at the front end
-So good so far
-They gave me the requirements
-BUILD A FU##ING website using
- BOOTSTRAP AND WORDPRESS
two let's call them tools i have NEVER used and also mentioned that
So here i am having my fking pulse over 100 trying to damn figure out how this bs works.
End my suffering
Have a nice day!!13
Team building exercises... Curious to hear your opinions....
They annoy the hell out of me personally and I can't see the value in them...
Have bonded way more with previous teams by simply working on a project together. No BS exercises, or even scrum for that matter, we just respected each other and that seemed to effortlessly let us make each other better at our work.1
My AP Comp Sci teacher back in highschool. She spent a lot of time making BS assignments to get me out of bad habigs. (Uninitialized variables, public variables in Java, bad documentation, cryptic variable names [x, y, string q], etc.)
Sharing is caring, and continuing the streak, I have 3 invites to enki with the code: ASABE108
yeah we have a guy that actively paints himself into corners. last time was an api he was saying yeah there just this last field to put in, then when you open the code because of the bs reaspn he gives you for not finishing it you realize you have to wreak everithing and start pver cuz there is no ways in hell this would work. and thats just the tip of the iceberg....
When i heard people talking much about scrum & agile things, but he actually never implement yet even worst he didn't really know about scrum it self, just STFO... I'm tired of all those BS 😪1
instagrams "based on likes" is total bullshit, I don't like shit those suggestions like but if you scroll through your contacts you'll find those suggestions. Why not just say it like it is: "from your contacts or from your friends contacts"3
So the cocks* where i work have recently started a policy where sleep mode is no longer a good idea anymore. This is so that they can push gpupdates everyday, i.e bogus corporate propaganda such as changing our desktop wallpaper. Like developers give a fly f* about corporate events and wtf marketing actually do with their time. Filled with noisey ass b*.
I wouldn't be half surprised if the policy is enacted by the head of IT. C* refuses to teach any one on his team so this way he looks important and busy all of the time.10
So sick of my coworker explaining to me how I should do a task. Dude, I've already planned out how I'm going to handle the situation. If you really want to help, wait until I create my pull request, review it, and then make your suggestions there. Unless I ask for your advice on how to do something, I don't need you to tell me how you would do things, especially since i have, what, 5 years working in the framework when you have 2 months?
It is this time of the year that I get to work on a shitty project to add some new functionality to it, it is a front end part of the project which before was externally developed, so now I have to deal with this BS Marionette mess where nothing they wrote comply to standards, like the fucking router.js doesn't look anything like the Marionettes doc, the bootstrap they used they fking decided to override classes in custom css and turn the 12 col grid system into 5ths or shit, then they created some autmated tests with bunch of intricated selectors selecting by 'labels' instead of !!!!FUCKING WHAT ARE THIS FOR IDs!? - fuk me - so I better decide to procrastinate on this project since luckily enough we don't have a deadline and I wouldn't care if we had either! My job is java developer, and yes I feel good about learning new things and learning front end. BUT NOT THIS CRAP DEPRECATED MttehorseShit!
I created an application A which was faster than B. As the authors of B created a repo for benchmarking and mentioned
'Do you know other Bs? PR! :D'
I created a PR in Apr.
it is not accepted yet.4
pip kept screwing me up with permission issues in /usr/local etc. Changed permissions for respective python folders, still got pip permission errors, did a chgrp - R user /usr.
Have to reinstall :/4
I hate it when my lead asks me whats my involvement to my co-workers project when in fact, i'm just answering questions that should have been handled by my lead.
Just wanted to free up some space and separate all of my projects.
First idea ... failed!

Second idea ... failed!
dd if=/dev/zero of=~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs bs=1M count=10240
mount -o defaults,noatime,autodefrag,compress,compress-force,inode_cache ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs ~/Development/Project1
Well ... little overhead, gzip compression, saved a lot of space, but fixed img size.
Third idea ... yay!
truncate -s 200G ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs
mount -o defaults,noatime,autodefrag,compress,compress-force,inode_cache ~/Imgs/myproject1.btfs ~/Development/Project1
Well ... little overhead, gzip compression, saved a lot of space ... but wait ... why do my btfs files consume more and more space?
Hmm ... time for a little bash and my beloved systemd timers.
for f in `find . -type f -name "*.btfs"`
btrfs balance start -v -dusage=100 ~/Development/$project
btrfs balance start -v -musage=100 ~/Development/$project
fallocate -d -v $f
Have a BS in Web Design & Development from a university...but am wondering if I should go attend a community college and get a degree in programming too.
I feel like YouTube and Lynda would serve me just as well also...8
I'm just wondering ,after observing all your guys' rants. Is the corporate world that bad? I'll probably be working in the next 2-3 years and I'm hoping I won't have a bad experience10
When you're having to add BS/hackey conditionals to your code because the other dev is too damn lazy to fix their code.
So you're the owner or founder of this project? Pls next time don't leave ur console.log like this project is own by your grandparents. Tell me how can I continue with this bs now! Thousand of console and util.log or util.warning wttttfffff!!3
Hello, I am currently taking BS Computer Science and for this semester we are required to take a subject on Discrete Mathematics (logic).
My question is, how can I apply this knowledge in programming?
Just spent 3 hours on a bs problem
I just start acceptance testing a node.js api.
I'm using frisby
I have logged the export method return data and it is correct
I am loading it into the set header function as the accept-type
On frisby side I run the test and it spits out that there is no accept-type
I really don't get why anymore. Came so close to a blind fury.
My hands and wrists hurt every night. I do all this bs to mitigate pain. I'm a healthy young guy and am ready for the chronic pain to be gone.5
I was in junior college working on a mechanical engineering degree taking Calculus 1, some other classes, and a beginner level C programming class.
I decided being a ME wasn't for me as I couldn't handle the math, but the programming was a lot of fun. I ended up dropping Cal 1 and changing majors only to find out that I needed to transfer to a 4 year school to continue on the developer track. A few years later in December of 2013 I graduated with my BS in Computer Information Systems and a couple of years after that I had a great job as a dev.
I am going to school for a BS in computer science and the other day my dad tagged me in a job for IT. Spent the next couple hours explaining what my job actually is.1
(found on a german blog)
Apparently the DoD saw itself in the need of writing a document to assist at detecting agile bs.
So here's the thing.
I'm a junior-developer in a small company and have quite few experience working on big company projects. We have this old massive project which is not very well written. At all. A couple weeks ago I finished small cms project which lets you deploy sell sites. And now my manager assigned me to refactor this old project which is thousand times more complex then the one I developed to use the same concept as mine.
I have no experience managing other programmers, I don't know how are you supposed to separate tasks and how to plan all project till the end. I've never worked in a team where you have lead developer and who gives you technically explained tasks. Mostly it's just "place a button here to export this graph. And please be fast, it shouldn't take more then an hour." when in reality you only spend hour trying to figure out what tables to use and how this graph was created in the first place.
I'm overwhelmed and totally stuck.2
!dev, sort of
So, apparently my Play Store settings get reset when I restart my phone, so Google decided to update Google Keyboard to Gboard for me (and god-fucking-dammit, that shit is absolutely useless to me). I can find older .apks on websites like APKmirror for Google Kinstall but they won't install, saying that "it seems like the package is corrupt". I'm not sure exactly why this might be happening, but according to APKmirror’s FAQ it might have something to do with cryptographic signatures or that a newer version is already installed on the device. Gboard is disabled and I assume that should be enough for that, and I don't know if it would even detect it as the same app in the first place, so my best guess is that it’s got to do with the former which is why I'm turning to you guys.
Does anyone have advice for a solution? I don't have any problems getting another keyboard either if needed, but I would really like something that both has separated layouts per language, as well as a similar swipe-to-type function, since excessive tapping really aggravates my CTS. :/ Any suggestions?2
Use a product that is not the greatest, but does its job fairly well in the human capital management market. Anyhow this POS can't communicate very well with Azure extended end points via rest. FML. Now I'm building workarounds and I know this bs is gonna bite me in the ass.
Dear provider, COULD YOU PLEASE SENT ME YOUR DSL INSTALLATION CODE BEFORE YOU TURN A COMPANYS INTERNET DOWN??? SRSLY this is the biggest bs. No phone no mail since 8am, new hardware won't work without this fkking code.
I like that scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carey tells everyone what he really thinks. What would you scream out at a group of programming elites if you could do it without getting in hot water. I admit I have been advised not to buck convention openly. I think that is bs but probably true.
Why the fuck do I have to use a shitty Thinkpad with a crippled i5? It's at times like these that I miss my own i7 laptop... Even the screen on this is shitty. I asked if I can use my laptop and apparently it would have to meet some requirements. But if it was a MacBook, it would be A-Ok, totally fine! That's such fucking bullshit!!
