So Valve just released an update to Steam that includes a fork of WINE called Proton that allows Linux users to play and install Windows games as if they were native.

About 30 titles are currently officially supported but more are planned.

Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.

Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?

It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.

I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.

First thing that I notice is the increased framerate and more OpenGL extensions in OpenGL extensions viewer.

I tried building a watering system for my plants and I forgot that I was using free flow pumps that don't act as valve. So when I turn of the pumps the water keeps flowing, even against gravity because of the pressure difference.

I have a Swiss and one Russian Steam account. I have on my Swiss account over 450 Games and on the russian one around 4.

I have a friend in Russia and to play some games with him, I need a russian account.

Guess what? Since the last change to Steam Shop I cant use my Swiss Credit Card anymore to buy games in Russia.

Now when I want to test a game first on the russian account and when it's good to buy it after on my main Account, I can't.

Why should I pay for a game in Early Access the full price, when the game is bad and will be abadoned in a half year?

Sure they are some good early access games, which I payd the full price for (Switzerland has the highest Steam Game prices). As example ARK or Battlegrounds. I love these games and like to support the Devs.

But I get really angry when I have to pay for a Game which is worth 5 $ and sold in my Country for 20 $ and will be unsupported after a year.

I just had to delete 60GB of files, just to install all of them again from 7 DVDs* because Rockstar can't be bothered to fix their download client.

I had expected to see people posting about the Valve Index so I waited a bit because I'm lazy.

A few days ago Valve started the pre-order process for their new VR set. I bought one within 5 minutes of going live. They sold out in 8 minutes on the US store and within 25 minutes in Europe.

Wednesday, again train delay, and some funny little sh*t ripped the valve from my bike... I mean sure if you let the air out, haha little fun but completely removing the valve? That's just f'n low...

Roof is leaking... Due to rainy stormy weather here, I have now 3 buckets in my flat for catching the water.

Next thing that broke was the faucet in the kitchen... Whoever installed the kitchen (inherited from previous tenant) was a fricking fuck nugget. Not only are most important parts like the stove unbalanced (cooking is very fun...) - but most things were wrongly installed.

The rubber band under the faucet was a few mm larger than the faucet itself... Stretched out as someone really tightened the screws... Too tight. Friction tore the rubber band on one side. Note that the faucet is one of the large, pompous ones which weigh a fuckton. So the fucking faucet now - as the rubber band tore - turned into a sprinkler as the faucet moves due to water pressure.

Ok. Faucet out, new faucet in. Shouldn't be that hard.

Turns out they didn't use a milling head... The hole is a cone, top larger - then getting smaller.

So, there was that post about Valve that send your steam password through an email. I changed my password to see if it was true (I couldn't believe it). And I had to do phone verification....

I thought for a sec it wouldn't stop, but yeah atleast I got the message.

I hate fucking SteamVR stuff so much. I don't know why, but Valve has not set up the plugins in a way that makes any sense. I have so many workarounds in the project I'm working on it makes me sick.

i love their games and the whole model of community but now its just become a big cash grab for MOBA players. nothing against the ppl that enjoy DOTA, i just wish all the other games that still have a lively community got the same level of maintenance and attention.

Our computer science GCSE exams are so flawed in so many ways. They're awfully vague or just completely wrong. In the last exam I did, I got a question that was basically:

"There is a server in a network. Name 3 of its functions"

If you did not provide an answer within the 5 "correct answers", it was considered incorrect as it was beyond the curriculum hence irrelevant.

That's like penalising people for not correctly guessing the contents of an opaque box...

I've genuinely lost more marks to the flaws in the marking scheme than genuine error.

Ok this is only marginally dev-related, but I need to let off some steam as if I was valve. And this is, as I understand, the general purpose of this app.
So: fuck my university, I really love what I study, but the over all circumstances are far from ideal. In addition to that the pressure from the exams and the workload that is expected really stress me out to an extend where I suffer from anxiety and stress related health issues, which again makes me less able to do a good job, which again stresses me out more. This is an incredibly hard time for me but I am sure I will make it. Thanks for listening.

My badass dev moment was when I read a valve white paper on text rendering and implemented a dynamic text version of it in webgl. That white paper was about signed distance fields and how to hack the alpha channel of an image to bake in some font smoothing data.... Holy fuck that felt good. Oh and it looked good too!

Need advice for buying VR capable PC or laptop.

Basically, I want to start developing VR applications and run VR games through Virtual Desktop or Air link through Oculus Quest 2, which I will buy next month (no, I don’t have money to buy Valve Index and invest in new stationary computer), but I’m not really sure which setup I should buy. I really don’t want to spend more than 800 € for a computer. Can anyone share their experience and computer parts bought or recommended?

The main difference between macOS and windows/linux is that it has Helvetica, the best typeface to ever exist, built in. When an email arrives, you know it's your fellow Mac user who sent it, so you know they at least take a shower every day, and you don't have to explain things like they're five.
You can use Helvetica for everything. Designers love it. Guess what — all of them have Macs, so things they design look best on your Mac as well. They don't test on windows or any linux.
Linux has the important mission of overthrowing windows as the main desktop OS for normies, and that's a good thing. Valve and Steam OS is a massive step forward. But, if you value your time and want to be surrounded with beautiful things, nothing beats macOS.

So how does an experienced programmer break his own code in a such a terrible manner.

No programmer would make the mistake that was made. They converted all their classes that interpret STRING VALUES using a parse to BitConverter.

(The input is a byte array) for like, ALL THEIR CLASSES.

Again this seems fucking intentional.
Instead of letting it remain a goddamn class that handed around an open file stream with a binaryreader around it which was simple, they tried some fucking fancy shit and throw readonlyspan<byte> at a read method which is where the code WILL fuck up ! wtf is wrong with you fucking dumb bastards ? IF YOU DONT WANT THE CHOMS GETTING AHEAD SHOOT THEM JESUS CHRIST !

Maybe this is some special interests shit to make sure ArcGis remains the dominant gis package and no ordinary lowly programmer can have a reader to get started with their own manipulations.
