So Valve just released an update to Steam that includes a fork of WINE called Proton that allows Linux users to play and install Windows games as if they were native.
About 30 titles are currently officially supported but more are planned.34

I'm talking with this teenager that believes himself an engineer because he built a PC.
He is vehement in telling me that Linux came out in 2007 and it was Valve who developed it for Steam!
They he Googled it to prove me wrong and then... never spoke to me again 😂
I'm an Arch user dude! That's like, just one level under Linus Torvalds!15
Valve deployed a CS:GO update this Friday, guess what. It had quite a few bugs.
Never deploy on a Friday, please.4
TL;DR: No YouTube Music! Fuck you.
Disclaimer: I could use an Adblocker but my old one always crashed and YouTubes Ads are short and not that bad - mostly just banners in the video player.
Rant: Yes google, I AM listening to music on youtube. I am your target audience for YouTube Music. But I am NOT interested.
You see, I wouldn't listen to music on YouTube if I had the spare money for Spotify, Apple Music or some other stupid overpriced service that gives the actual artists not enough of what they charge.
And giving me the same ad over and over again just annoys the fuck out of me. I DON'T WANT FUCKING YOUTUBE MUSIC. I am not interested in a free trial. I am not interested in buying it.
The most stupid thing is that Google provides a dislike and like button for ads. I pressed dislike so often yet it still comes up. GOOD QUALITY!
Why on earth is every fucking big company lost in copying every shit that others make and that has success? Where is my loved innovative Valve?! The innovative Google? They all just crave for fucking money making stuff. As if they still needed more...15
Proton by Valve.
I know it’s technically a Wine but slightly modified, but the fact how stupidly simply it works is stunning to me.
( bad english alert )
Why everybody from my school class, saying "Windows is better than linux, because windows don't have commands like linux"15
Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.
Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?
It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.
I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.
Happy 2016's death everyone, and sorry for the long and boring post!13
trying to get steam to work on arch with nvidia
pray for me
if you have tips let me hear em :`)
specs (my asus baby)
· Core i7
· 16G ddr3 RAM
· GeForce 745m
+ 256G ssd & 1T hdd
+ 1920x1080 display (unknown refresh rate)13
Ditched MacOS in favour for Fedora.
First thing that I notice is the increased framerate and more OpenGL extensions in OpenGL extensions viewer.
Never imagined a day that the video drivers in Linux surpasses these of MacOS.3
Steam is distancing from supporting Ubuntu officially and its looking for a more up to date distro.
Well isnt this a nice suprise.
Im kind of happy that they are doing that. From what i saw and heard its pain for valve devs to bring latest updates to Ubuntu as they update DXVK to latest version but Ubuntu doesnt have latest Mesa and so it doesnt work most of the time.33
Its happening guys. Its happening. Valve just announced new Half life game. Its VR game but still its half life.
I knew Gabe would listen.15
Well WOW. Valve just released a totally new compiler for mesa.
And holy shit does it look awesome.
In some cases it brings 7.5x fasted compilation speed of LLVM. Holy shit this is awesome.
Well here i come testing.2
Dear fellow developers: Let's talk about the Internet. If you're reading this post, you've probably heard of it and are comfortable using it on a regular basis. You may even develop software that works over the internet, and that's fine and great! But you have to draw the line somewhere, and that line has been pushed farther and farther back as time goes on.
Let's talk about video games. The first game that really got me into FPSes was Team Fortress 2. Back in the day, it had a great community of casual and competitive groups alike, and there were hats! Underneath the hood was a massive number of servers. Some were officially hosted, some were run by independent communities. It had a built-in browser and central index where you could find every publically-available server and connect to it. You could even manually input connection details if that failed. In my opinion, this was a near-perfect combination of optimal user-experience and maximum freedom to run whatever the hell you wanted to. Even today, if Valve decided to stop hosting official servers, the smaller communities could still stay afloat. Fifteen years in the future, after all demand has died off, someone can still recover the server software and play a game with their kids.
Now, contrast that to a game like Overwatch. Also a very pivotal game in the FPS world, and much more modern, but what's the underlying difference in implementation? NO SUPPORT FOR SELF-HOSTED SERVERS. What does that mean when Blizzard decides to stop hosting its central servers? IT DIES. There will be no more multiplayer experience, not now, not ever. You will never be able to fully share this part of your history with future generations.
Another great example is the evolution of voice chat software. While I will agree that Discord revolutionized the market, it took away our freedom to run our own server on our own hardware. I used to run a Mumble server, now it has fallen out of use and I miss it so much.
Over time, client software has become more and more dependent on centrally-hosted services. Not many people will think about how this will impact the future usability of the product, and this will kill our code when it becomes legacy and the company decides to stop supporting it. We will have nothing to give to future generations; nobody will be able to run it in an emulator and fully re-experience it like we can do with older games and software.
This is one of the worst regressions of our time. Think about services like IRC, SMTP, SSH, even HTTP, how you're so easily able to connect to any server running those protocols and how the Internet would change if those were replaced with proprietary software that depended on a central service.

Valve is definitely on drugs, their items file is a complete mess.

For fucks sake I am such an Idiot at times....
I tried building a watering system for my plants and I forgot that I was using free flow pumps that don't act as valve. So when I turn of the pumps the water keeps flowing, even against gravity because of the pressure difference.
TL;DR: I forgot fcking kindergarten physics today.6
i am happy to announce that Proton for Steam/Valve works for Star Trek Online. That is all. #linux #gaming5
Fuck you Steam, just fuck you and your price politics.
I have a Swiss and one Russian Steam account. I have on my Swiss account over 450 Games and on the russian one around 4.
I have a friend in Russia and to play some games with him, I need a russian account.
Guess what? Since the last change to Steam Shop I cant use my Swiss Credit Card anymore to buy games in Russia.
Now when I want to test a game first on the russian account and when it's good to buy it after on my main Account, I can't.
Why should I pay for a game in Early Access the full price, when the game is bad and will be abadoned in a half year?
Sure they are some good early access games, which I payd the full price for (Switzerland has the highest Steam Game prices). As example ARK or Battlegrounds. I love these games and like to support the Devs.
But I get really angry when I have to pay for a Game which is worth 5 $ and sold in my Country for 20 $ and will be unsupported after a year.
Really fuck you Valve and Steam 🖕🏻🖕🏻😡
Atleast refund the people the money, when the game is abadoned! But sure, you're just in for a Cash Grab...4
I had expected to see people posting about the Valve Index so I waited a bit because I'm lazy.
Since nobody has posted it, here it is.
A few days ago Valve started the pre-order process for their new VR set. I bought one within 5 minutes of going live. They sold out in 8 minutes on the US store and within 25 minutes in Europe.
Who else has ordered/is gonna order it? Why (not)?7
This week was one of those weeks were it feels like it's never ending
Monday, delayed trains and the legacy project's new update went live
Tuesday, not a lot of work so I did some self study (best day of the week)
Wednesday, again train delay, and some funny little sh*t ripped the valve from my bike... I mean sure if you let the air out, haha little fun but completely removing the valve? That's just f'n low...
Thursday, the legacy project had a weird bug that I can't reproduce but has to be fixed before the end of this week...
Friday... To be continued... I hope it will be a quiet quick and easy day... 😟3
Uhm. Steam releases a new kernel with fsync patch. OK cool to test with but well you see Valve Arch users are not your ordinary bunch of people like Ubuntu.
Why the fuck not just give us the patches so we can apply them on our own to any kernel we wish ? IDK but hey 5.3 with fsync building.4
I just had to delete 60GB of files, just to install all of them again from 7 DVDs* because Rockstar can't be bothered to fix their download client.2
So, there was that post about Valve that send your steam password through an email. I changed my password to see if it was true (I couldn't believe it). And I had to do phone verification....
I thought for a sec it wouldn't stop, but yeah atleast I got the message.6
I hate fucking SteamVR stuff so much. I don't know why, but Valve has not set up the plugins in a way that makes any sense. I have so many workarounds in the project I'm working on it makes me sick.
Our computer science GCSE exams are so flawed in so many ways. They're awfully vague or just completely wrong. In the last exam I did, I got a question that was basically:
"There is a server in a network. Name 3 of its functions"
If you did not provide an answer within the 5 "correct answers", it was considered incorrect as it was beyond the curriculum hence irrelevant.
That's like penalising people for not correctly guessing the contents of an opaque box...
I've genuinely lost more marks to the flaws in the marking scheme than genuine error.
Valve, pls fix4
Does anyone know any good resources for learning Lua?
(And possibly how to use it with games by Valve (e.g. TF2, GMod, CS:GO)?)2
i love their games and the whole model of community but now its just become a big cash grab for MOBA players. nothing against the ppl that enjoy DOTA, i just wish all the other games that still have a lively community got the same level of maintenance and attention.6
Tldr: fuck me!
Ok this is only marginally dev-related, but I need to let off some steam as if I was valve. And this is, as I understand, the general purpose of this app.
So: fuck my university, I really love what I study, but the over all circumstances are far from ideal. In addition to that the pressure from the exams and the workload that is expected really stress me out to an extend where I suffer from anxiety and stress related health issues, which again makes me less able to do a good job, which again stresses me out more. This is an incredibly hard time for me but I am sure I will make it. Thanks for listening.3
My badass dev moment was when I read a valve white paper on text rendering and implemented a dynamic text version of it in webgl. That white paper was about signed distance fields and how to hack the alpha channel of an image to bake in some font smoothing data.... Holy fuck that felt good. Oh and it looked good too!1
