Bought this Lenovo thinkpad netbook a while ago.
I was told it has 4gb ram.
Just did a free and free -m command.
It shows nearly 8gb of ram.
so i just got fired 🔥 🔥 🔥 because i wanted a 200 fucking dollars raise after 1 year of work and sacrifices and feeling like shit.
200$ because i live in the 3rd fucking world, working with a stupid motherfucking boss (you know the fat old tone deaf cunt), he's american, and he brings projects from the US from clients paying thousands of dollars, and he pays us 300$, and by the fucking way he used to pay us 100$ (we are 3 developers, a dick who does nothing but report our behavior, and a shit who does shit. we are a development company and we are the only developers and we got fired because he thought we didn't deserve the raise and that he sees no reason in giving us more money because we're already wasting the company's money and time).
So now the only people left there are the dick, the shit and the fatass boss who's in the states rn.
the funny thing is after we left by an hour or so we got calls from many other companies that we refused to work with because of our loyal-fucking-ty.
the motherfucker thinks we're conspiring against him, that we don't trust him, well of fucking course we don't, he lies about having a company in the US, well it's there but it's suspended (we looked it up), he says he's a microsoft, intel, adobe, dell, lenovo partner, and he's not.
well fuck i'm kind of happy that i left, i'm sitting with my friends in a cafe right now thinking about finishing our personal projects.
forgot something: the projects we were working on are unfinished, and there's not a single fucker to finish them, so he's ball deep in shit. hope this rant is relatable45
Apparently someone at Lenovo thought it was a good idea to put an Alt-F4 shortcut button right next to the volume buttons.20
You know why i hate lenovo with a burning passion? Not because they make industrial waste and sell it. Not because they trick non tech people into buying their garbage. No, i hate them because their shitass laptops dont even fit in my rubbish bin.31
Am I the only one who doesn't like putting things—such as stickers—on my laptop?
I like the clean and clear look of my lenovo thinkpad without cluttering it with stickers.24
Just took apart my laptop to dust it out from the inside. Had it back together, put the battery in. "Alright, time to make sure I didn't break something"
Beep....beep beep beep....beep beep beep....beep
"FUCK I FUCKING BROKE SOMETHING WHAT DID I BREAK?"
Google Lenovo post codes (Thinkpad laptop). DIMM issue.
"Oh fuck I forgot to put the RAM back in.."
long rant = this;
Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
The task: get Windows 7 on my mom's new Lenovo running win 10.
First idea: dual boot. Go into disk utility and shrink win 10 partition leaving empty partition. Easy!
Unfortunately it all went downhill from there.
Restart, can't get into boot menu. Google says you have to do that from Windows. Ok.
Laptop says BOOTING FROM CD IS NOT SUPPORTED. WTF??
Go into BIOS, enable legacy boot, prioritize legacy. Restart. Ok, it boots from disk.
Go to install 7 on the empty partition and it can't because its an unsupported partition format or some shit. Whatever, wipe everything. Ok, installing windows.
Windows installed, need drivers. Go download them with another computer and go to copy them over with USB disk. Windows doesn't detect it. THIS POS DOESN'T HAVE STANDARD USB DRIVERS?!?!?
Of course, the laptop didn't come with any driver software. I end up burning a fucking CD like its fucking 2001 so that I can get the goddamn wifi driver on it.
Ok, I have wifi. Go to Lenovo site, find driver page. Select all the drivers I want for the model/OS and click download. Lenovo site says "hey, use this driver update software." I'm like, hey asshole, why don't you just give me the drivers i asked for. But fine.
Driver update software downloads, I install it, nothing happens. I run it, it says it's already running. Still nothing. What the goddamn flipping fuck?
I go download the drivers individually. I try to install USB driver. It says my system is not supported. .............Try to install chipset driver, not supported. ............ I can install maybe half of the drivers and I still can't even use a fucking USB mouse. Gonna have to wait for windows update to find it sometime two days from now.
I hope everyone in charge of Lenovos fucking ass backwards pointless piece of useless fucking shit drivers gets raped to death with a serrated knife.20
Everyone is posting their cool ass multi-monitor setups and I'm here carrying my fucking LENOVO on my fucking back everyday to the fucking college.11
I work for my highschool's IT department (the money I earn goes directly towards my tuition), here is a picture of my workstation. It's a Lenovo ThinkCentre, it has an Intel i5-6500 vPro, 4GB of RAM and runs Debian 9.4.16
I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8
I have a new woman in my life. She has an amazing contoured body, smooth to touch and yeah she is wonderful on the inside. She is a pleasure to be around and is always there for me. She enables to DO amazing things and she empowers my personal aswell as my professional development. I THINK I'm falling in love no I DO love her.
She is my Lenovo ThinkStation P310 Intel Xeon 3.60GHz 32GB RAM 1.2TB SSD 6GB/s also known as Suzie.11
Downloaded Kubuntu because i couldn't seen to be able to boot from a freshly created KDE Neon bootable usb.
Installed it onto my netbook (Lenovo Thinkpad X121E) and it worked great!
But just the fact that somehow the installer froze when trying to setup hdd encryption kept bugging me.
Took a random flash drive which was laying around and put it in to see what would happen. KDE Neon booted just like this and everything worked very well with hdd encryption.
I now have a very secure netbook 😊15
So here's the story of my laptop:
It's a Sony VAIO VPCEH3AEN.
After about 3 years, a power issue popped up.
So the laptop just shuts down just like that sometimes.
This became more frequent.
This rampant turning off killed both my battery and my hard disk after another year or so.
I did not want to invest any money on this thing.
So I did a hardware hack which makes my laptop work like a desktop and I'm using it with a Live booted Lubuntu OS.
My Lenovo ThinkPad T470 will arrive in a couple of weeks ..1
I hope it will be finished soon since it will be fucking fun to play skyrim on linux on Lenovo miix 3-830 So excited11
- Few days ago: Orders thinkpad
- Now: Checks email
- Sees shipping email from lenovo
*YES! Earlier than expected ship date by a full week*
- Opens email
- Package only contains the additional charger that I had ordered, I can't even use it without the laptop
If i have to repair one more lenovo laptop, imma pull up to their hq and punch all them in the dick.6
When you get a system update and think it's Oreo, but it's just a security update. Fuck you Lenovo7
Attempting to access my colleague's NFS directory on his VM, don't know the VM's IP address, hostname or password:
- 2 minutes with nmap to narrow the possible IPs down to ~30
- Ping each and look for the one with a Dell MAC prefix as the rest of us have been upgraded to Lenovo. Find 2 of these, one for the host and one for the virtual machine.
- Try to SSH to each, the one accepting a connection is the Linux VM
- Attempt login as root with the default password, no dice. Decide it's a lost cause.
- Go to get a cup of tea, walk past his desk.
- PostIt note with his root password 😶
FYI this was all allowed by my manager as he had unpushed critical changes that we needed for the release that day.6
Yesterday evening I'd been to Lenovo service center to get a battery for my personal laptop.
Sales guy: Sir, I can see that your laptop had Windows 8 when you purchased it. If you want I can give you a one key recovery disc for that.
Me: Thanks a lot sir, but I run Ubuntu on my laptop. And if you are insisting, I can take that recovery media and install it on my uncle's laptop.
Sales guy: I'll get back to you on this.
*End of conversation* 😂6
Teacher who has no clue how to even turn on a computer asked me to connect a JBL Go Bluetooth speaker to a notebook. 1st attempt: Driver error; 2nd attenpt: BSOD 😶 Lenovo notebook with Win 8.1 + bluetooth speaker = BSOD... Ok...1
I love my notebook but still...
Fuck you to the person at Lenovo who thought that it would be a great idea to support 16gb of ram and then put 4gb internal ram into it.
I can add an 8gb stick to it, totalling at 12gb. There are no 12gb sticks (as far I am aware of) so yeah, fuck 16gb "supported" by the mainboard, 12 is the maximum.6
Finally i can say total bye bye to Microsoft today i finally successfully installed ubunto on Lenovo miix 3 830 yayyyy on other PC and Rpi i have arch but i cant get arch to work here (i will try it) so i installed ubuntu yayyyyyy
Had to sticker these 2 up. Lenovo was Win 10 and the HP was Ubuntu 16.04. Gave the Lenovo away cos my sis needed a new laptop asap for her work with many clients. Wherever she goes, those two stickers on the Lenovo will be spreading devRant greetings/love. Told her not to take them off. 😁3
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22
Thank you windows update and Lenovo for trying to update my bios and failing in the process.
Now this computer that doesn’t even show bios. Fucking bitch ass pieces of shit.
Stay the fuck away from my bios windows, you shit eating trash of an os.13
Working on my Lenovo x1 carbon. Akku warning "less then 6%" appears. No problem, I will connect the cable just after I finished this function... "Will shutdown in a view moments" message appears. Ok, I connect the cable. Nothing happens. Maybe power adapter is broken or something more worst. Panic. Try to commit and push as fast as I can (around 2000 LOC from today, made big changes on my project today). While pushing to github laptop powers off. Fuck. Check github on smartphone to see if commits had been pushed. No. I do not have a power adapter for replacement. FML.4
FUCK YOU LENOVO AND FUCK YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE
They "repaired" the hinge and it locked solid three days after I got it back.
My faithful companion has been reduced to such a terrible state :(
I had to remove the screen, there was significant stress on the panel.
...I guess I could make a server or something out of it?11
At first, there are some ugly dust particles on my screen.
Second, that battery life would be nice..4
Yeah its happening installing skyrim on linux on Lenovo miix 3-830 (baytrail-M device) yeah lets see if it will work
Btw im using usb to Ethernet adapter which is usb 2.0 so thats why that speed of internet.2
My clocksource is doing crap (sometimes 2x fast when its 2x fast and pressed keyboard it will type it 10 times or more) on my Lenovo miix 3-830 with linux tried to change to tsc clock dont help only make it worse (black screen on start up and slowing down so fast) any other help if somebody got linux on baytrail-M device to work normally comment here please
Lenovo, you dumb fuck cunts.
How the fuck did you think it might be okay to ship a laptop with a BROKEN FUCKING WLAN DRIVER??????
This piece of shit doesn't even have RJ45 anymore.
And also who shit in your empty cavities where your brains should be when you thought it was a good thing to disable booting from anything but the main windows partition? My Mint installer stick works on any and everything I have ever tried him with except for this.3
When it takes 30 minutes to find a power button in lenovo idea pad.
Whose idea was it to put a power button in bottom left side????5
Since we are posting workspace setups...
Lenovo 100s Chromebook and Raspberry Pi 3 running Arch Linux and an attached hard drive.
SSH and Vim are my friends.14
It is time... to rant about macs!
No, seriously - I had such a different experience about which not many talk in real life or pretend that it never happens....
Model: 2015 mid MBP 15" with second to highest specs (don't have dedicated gpu).
Rattling fucking toy.... Yea, it rattles! If you shake/move ir sit in trait/bus - it non-stop rattles as a fucking toy. Worst part? It's confirmed issue by apple and it manifacturing issue that they are not keen on fixing!!!! WTF? We have 4 macs in our office - all of them fucking rattles... God help me how annoying that is. (Lose LCD control panel that unsticks from glue. Replacing it solves the issue for 1 month if you carry it anywhere).
Constant fucking crashing/updates.... Every morning I wake up and don't have an app that requires confirmation for restart - it's restarted. YAY, turning on all apps once again.... Why you may ask? Well, because if you tinker with software in any way - it fails to update it and hell breaks lose. It's been a long time since High-Sierra came around and the issue is still there (not running Mojave as it conflicts with soft I have... Woo!). Tried few times - updates fail. Resolution? Reinstall OS!
OS conflicts with applications - damn... People told me it works out of the box.... Yeah, as long as you don't upgrade the OS - then it breaks. Why? Well, because.
Piece of shit power supply. With 4 of our office power supplies - 2 of them failed twice withing warranty and once afterwards... Really? Not to mention that all 4 are starting to shear the sleeve or already did (mine is just wrapped with white electrical tape to give it a support... lol).
Bluetooth - who the hell needs that in mac, right? Well, people do. To start with - it conflicts with 2.4GHz wireless network - you might have one of those and not both at the same time. Next thing is using a device that needs constant connection (mouse, headphones, keyboard - non apple branded) - shit... They can't stay connected for more than an hour without any issues... Constant battle to re-connect it, to re-pair the device and all due to smart apple bluetooth settings. Hell, my mouse (logitech MX master) was even printing random symbols in some applications if moved. All of the issues went away after using a bluetooth dongle... WOO!!!!
Xcode... Ahh, you may never prepare your mac if you don't download 17GB of fucking xCode libraries that enables some tools to be installed/runned as you can NOT get them in any other way and you have to install full xCode software in order to get them... YAY! 17GB wasted on my 256GB SSD that I can't upgrade. GREAT!
OsX applications - ah, don't get offended but if you are using them and you are fine with them - you are probably a monkey that loves being told what to do. You can't customise any actions, you can't configure it the way you like - either you accept their default workflow or go kill yourself. Yep... Had issues with calendar, mail, iMessages, safari... None of them fit my needs :)
Resolution scaling... Fucking hell, the display is 2880 x 1800 but all you let me to use is 1440x900 without scaling? Am I blind to you? Scaling the resolution means that you are fucked if some applications don't support scaling very well. Looking at you Jetbrains - your IDES suck at scaling and slows down the pc to a potato....
Now the pros - keyboard is way better than the new ones, trackpad is GREAT - no need for mouse (using it on external 4k displays only), the battery life is great - getting around 6h of continues development time, 8 if using sublime instead of phpStorm and well, that's about it...
I've bought this device due to the fact that at that time mac and windows pc's with similiar specs costed the same while windows pc sucked with their quality of the device and trackpad... Now the situation is better and when time comes for a next upgrade - it's going to be one of these:
Razer Blade 15, Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Carbon X1 series.
And of course - LINUX. I've had enough issues with windows, and had enough of retardness of apple ecosystem, so switching it is a must for me.
Disclaimer: I might be an unhappy customer, a bit picky but I'd like my device to be setted up as I like and continue to have that until I don't like, not until the company decides to break it. Not to mention that paying almost a yearly salary in my country for one device - I'd expect it to be at least reliable and work without issues....
ps. You can disagree with me, this is my personal experience with MBP over the last 3 years :)10

I booted up windows yesterday night to play some games which is weird for me since I am almost never in the mood
It had to update for like four hours automatically without asking me first so I leave it on and just go to bed
Next day, not really in the mood to play games, as usual
I go to restart into superior distro: Linux
Computer reboots into windows
Try again: fucking windows
Another: malware fills my screen once again
This fucking ass clown overwrote grub
This fucking piece of shit malware deleted my fancy dual boot screen and had the balls to casually say "Hi" while it did it
I then remembered my laptop doesn't have a keyboard combination to select what to boot from. I have to fucking boot my laptop by pressing a pinhole on the side so I can select linux.
Fuck Lenovo with their shitty button and fuck Windows
On the bright side, I guess if anyone steals the laptop they'll never know I have a second OS on it.
So my laptop is a Lenovo y50-70 and it's quite good. The keyboard is amazing compared to most other Laptops I've tried the screen is nice, it's durable and it's got some decent specs. With it (and also my desktop) I dual boot Kubuntu and Windows 10.
About three years ago I decided I wanted to reinstall both OS' since they were starting to get cluggered. Lo and behold I wasn't able to do that because, and I quote: "EFI USB Device boot failed".
Hours were spent trying to Google different things to the point where I was even desperate enough to go beyond page 0 on the different searches with (as you might have guessed), no luck. "Fuck that" I thought. It worked and I could clean it manually anyway.
Fast forward to the last part of August this year where I upgraded my Kubuntu from 17.10 to 18.04 and shit got weird. You can read more about it here:
but the TL;DR is in the link. Windows was also quite annoing as well (but don't take my word for it).
As you might understand it made me really frustrated. I couldn't update my BIOS since they were already at the current version, but one way or another I had to fix it. After a while was almost about to give up when I decided to give this:
a go. It was weird though. Like imagine the conversation:
"Can't boot from USB bro, what do I do?"
"Just update your kernel, bro"
Well IT. FUCKING. WORKED.
So I imideatly installed Linux and have just now bothered installing Windows (since all of the teachers are vacation so I had plenty of time to set it all up).
But got damn.4
Today I went to a computer store to buy laptop with my friend. When we were waiting for the store technicians to check the laptop for my friend, we found out that nearly all technicians (about 4, 5) of the computer store don't know how to enter BIOS setup for the laptop :/ How the fuck they become the store technicians if they don't fucking know how to access BIOS setup of a laptop? (one of them even suggested to use a screwdriver (wtf?) to access the BIOS the new laptop o.O)
Don't know what will they do with my friend's new laptop if I didn't tell them how to enter BIOS
(It's a Lenovo laptop, the combination to enter BIOS is fn+f2 and the store we bought the laptop is a large store in our city)3
Lessons I've learnt so far on programming
-- Your best written code today can be your worst tomorrow (Focus more on optimisation than style).
-- Having zero knowledge of a language then watching video tutorials is like purchasing an arsenal before knowing what a gun is (Read the docs instead).
-- It's works on my machine! Yes, because you built on Lenovo G-force but never considered the testers running on Intel Pentium 0.001 (Always consider low end devices).
-- "Programming" is you telling a story and without adding "comments" you just wrote a whole novel having no punctuation marks (Always add comments, you will thank yourself later for it I promise).
-- In programming there is nothing like "done"! You only have "in progress" or "abandoned" (Deploy progressively).
-- If at this point you still don't know how to make an asynchronous call in your favourite language, then you are still a rookie! take that from me. (Asynchronous operation is a key feature in programming that every coder should know).
-- If it's more than two conditions use "Switch... case" else stick with "If... else" (Readability should never be under-rated).
-- Code editors can MAKE YOU and BREAK YOU. They have great impact on your coding style and delivery time (Choose editors wisely).
-- Always resist the temptation of writing the whole project from scratch unless needs be (Favor patching to re-creation).
-- Helper methods reduces code redundancy by a large chunk (Always have a class in your project with helper methods).
-- There is something called git (Always make backups).
-- If you don't feel the soothing joy that comes in fixing a bug then "programming" is a no-no (Coding is fun only when it works).
-- Get angry with the bugs not the testers they're only noble messengers (Bugs are your true enemy).
-- You would learn more than a lot reading the codes of others and I mean a lot! (Code review promotes optimisation and let's you know when you are writing macaroni).
-- If you can do it without a framework you have yourself a big fat plus (Frameworks make you entirely dependent).
-- Treat your code like your pet, stop taking care of it and it dies! (Codes are fragile and needs regular updates to stay relevant).
Programming is nothing but fun and I've learnt that a long time ago.6
No, this is not a joke/meme.
So I was searching the internet for 2-in-1 laptops -- looking around what could be my next lappy if my current xps13 died. I had a hunch the xps13 convertable is quite overpriced and was looking at lenovo offerings to compare.
This is what one of the largest LT e-shops suggested to buy along with the lappy :)
Dangerous times these are I guess.. Everyone and everything needs protection
[I assume you won't need translation ;) ]11
I needed a new laptop to work/study and found a suitable one on Lenovo's website...
25th of july :
- "your order has been placed... blablabla.. it will take approximately from 1 to 2 weeks to prepare and 3-5 days shipping.."
- hum... Ok.. seems long to just put RAM and SSD inside my laptop but alright..
31st of july :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for August, 14"
- Fuck ! Ill be patient then.. hopefully it'll be ready earlier than that..
10th of August :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for september, 7"
- WHAT THE FU.. ?!? YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT 8 FUCKING GIGS OF RAM AND AN SSD PLEASE TELL ME ?!? IS IT A JOKE OR WHAT ?! I FLY ABROAD THE 17TH OF SEPTEMBER YOU BETTER SHIP MY LAPTOP IN TIME !!
I'm really mad now and thinking of cancelling the order.. I might have no time to test the laptop before flying.. FUCK !!6
This is a follow up to my previous rant where I complained about Lenovo firmware update failing and bricking a relative’s computer.
We bought a chip programmer, got the bios from some forum and the thing fucking worked. I’m actually surprised it did, I’m not used to doing shit like this. I was pretty fucking scared of burning something.
The programmer also came with a clamp so we could hook it to the chip without desoldering it. Thank god.
I’m terribly depressed so good timing with that I guess.1
I am at Lenovo service center to bring back my laptop after replace of motherboard (they replaced because card reader not working). Ohh. I checked again and it's not yet working (illiterate technician)...
Waiting for 1 hour..
Meanwhile I see they are outsourcing their screen , monitor, scanner etc. From dell,acer... Ohh how can they prove they are better...
Okay!now hit me hard a person came here for service and without even booting they concluded the windows inside laptop is pirated🤔😌2
Honestly, fuck Lenovo.
First it's taken well over a year and my phone's not gotten 8.0 yet. And now my phone no longer vibrates. I've had this for less than a year and the piece of shit has broken already.
Last time I'm giving this trash excuse of a company my money.22
Last day of work. Literally only few more hours before I give up this lifestyle. Feeling little emotional as i look at the screen of my work laptop. It's a Windows 10 Lenovo ideapad .
Gonna miss those days when it made me mad bugging with updates. But it has been good to me, did more than i expected from it. I kept it turned on since half year or so and contrary to popular belief about it's race, it never disappointed me. We had our little secrets going on. Time to wipe them off and say goodbye. 😿3
I've got myself a new notebook. Lenovo ideapad 330.
Had troubles with the installation, but I will be using elementary os in a few minutes! I'm excited!
I bought a Thinkpad E470 laptop for my wife' bday. Because she loves Linux, My first obvious choice was a Thinkpad. I chose the model from Ubuntu Certified Laptop list and installed Ubuntu 16.04 (Based on their recommendation)
THE FUCKING UBUNTU IS UNABLE TO DETECT WI-FI ADAPTOR. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK YOU WERE THINKING WHEN YOU PUT THE LAPTOP MODEL ON THAT FUCKING STUPID LIST? I WANT TO EXACTLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THE FUCK YOU WERE THINKING AND WHY YOU UPGRADED YOUR FUCKING KERNEL WITHOUT REVIEWING YOUR FUCKING LIST?
AND I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK LENOVO THOUGHT WHEN THEY RECOMMEND UBUNTU. WHY THEY STILL SELL THIS SHIT BASED ON THINKPAD' REPUTATION AND WHY THEY STILL SUGGEST THIS IS A LAPTOP FOR DEVELOPERS? NO THIS FUCKING SHITHOLE IS NOT FOR ME. IT'S DESIGNED FOR MASTERBATION WITHOUT INTERNET! BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABLE TO CONNECT TO INTERNET! YOUR MOTHER FUCKERS.
As some of you may remember about 5 months ago I bought a Lenovo laptop, it had some hardware faults so I got a new one and it had the same faults the store didn't want to offer me a new Lenovo laptop.
I was told to pick a laptop from a selection and today the store is trying to push the product away saying they can't do a thing.
Tonight I'm meeting with a lawyer because the fight has begun.8
So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.
So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?
Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):
-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)
I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).32
So recently I installed Windows 7 on my thiccpad to get Hyperdimension Neptunia to run (yes 50GB wasted just to run a game)... And boy did I love the experience.
ThinkPads are business hardware, remember that. And it's been booting Debian rock solid since.. pretty much forever. There are no hardware issues here. Just saying.
With that out of the way I flashed Windows 7 Ultimate on a USB stick and attempted to boot it... Oh yay, first hurdle to overcome. It can't boot in UEFI mode. Move on Debian, you too shall boot in BIOS mode now! But okay, whatever right. So I set it to BIOS mode and shuffled Debian's partitions around a bit to be left with 3 partitions where Windows could stick in one more.
Installed, it asks for activation. Now my ThinkPad comes with a Windows 7 Pro license key, so fuck it let's just use that and Windows will be able to disable the features that are only available for Ultimate users, right? How convenient would that be, to have one ISO for all the half a dozen editions that each Windows release has? And have the system just disable (or since we're in the installer anyway, not install them in the first place) features depending on what key you used? Haha no, this is Microsoft! Developers developers developers DEVELOPERS!!! Oh and Zune, if anyone remembers that clusterfuck. Crackhead Microsoft.
But okay whatever, no activation then and I'll just fetch Windows Loader from my webserver afterwards to keygen my way through. Too bad you didn't accept that key Microsoft! Wouldn't that have been nice.
So finally booted into the installed system now, and behold finally we find something nice! Apparently Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate offer a native NFS driver. That's awesome! That way I don't have to adjust my file server at all. Just some fuckery with registry keys to get the UID and GID correct, but I'll forgive it for that. It's not exactly "native" to Windows after all. The fact that it even has a built-in driver for it is something I found pretty neat already.
Fast-forward a few hours and it's time to Re Boot.. drivers from Lenovo that required reboots and whatnot. Fire the system back up, and low and behold the network drive doesn't mount anymore. I've read that this is apparently due to Windows (not always but often) mounting the network drive before the network comes up. Absolutely brilliant! Move out shitstaind, have you seen this beauty of an init Mr. Poet?
But fuck it we can mount that manually after every single boot.. you know, convenient like that. C O P E.
With it now manually mounted, let's watch a movie! I've recently seen Pyro's review on The Platform and I absolutely loved it. The movie itself is quite good too. Open the directory on my file server and.. oh. Windows.. you just put db.thumb on it and db.thumb:encryptable. I shit you not, with the colon and everything. I thought that file names couldn't contain colons Windows! I thought that was illegal in NTFS. Why you doing this in NFS mate? And "encryptable", am I already infected with ransomware??? If it wasn't for the fact that that could also be disabled with something as easy as a registry key, I would've thought I contracted ransomware!
Oh and sound to go with that video, let's pair up some Bluetooth headphones with that Bluetooth driver I installed earlier! Except.. haha nope. Apparently you don't get that either.
Right so let's just navigate the system in its Aero glory... Gonna need to flick the mouse for that. Except it's excruciatingly slow, even the fastest speed is slower than what I'm used to on Linux.. and it's jerky as hell (Linux doesn't have any of that at higher speed). But hey it can compensate for that! Except that slows down the mouse even more. And occasionally the mouse driver gets fucked up too. Wanna scroll on Telegram messages in a chat where you're admin? Well fuck you mate, let me select all these messages for you and auto scroll at supersonic speeds! And God forbid that you press delete with that admin access of yours. Oh maybe I'll do it for you, helpful OS I am!
And the most saddening part of it all? I'd argue that Windows 7 is the best operating system that Microsoft ever released. Yeah. That's the best they could come up with. But at least it plays le games!11
Having a new Thinkpad Model feels like having a MacBook. Ram is broken. Can’t replace it because it’s soldered to the Motherboard. So what should I do with it? 🤔6
Unpopular personal opinion in 3... 2... 1
The new macbook pro keyboard is my favourite keyboard I've used and any lenovo style keyboard feels like typing on a wet sponge...
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to crawl back into my hole...25
Acer has a corrupt BIOS,
Lenovo is a bug fest,
HP supposedly also sucks.
So which brand of laptop does not suck?47
My Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th gen came with Windows pre-installed with a ton of bloatware. Reinstalled Windows just to clean all the crap off to learn that the SSD had an MBR partition table. Wiped the entire drive to change to GPT, then reinstalled Windows again and (of course) added linux. Gotta love how companies put random bloatware and crusty partition tables on brand new technology. It's ok, laptop. You're in good hands now.1
I made this bad decision to buy pretty pricey laptop with nVidia card. Lenovo Legion Y520.
So yeah, have you heard about optimus technology and how much one can hate nvidia?
> Debian is working, nice.
> Let's try nvidia-driver.
> 48hours later: WOoooooah glxgears at 120 fps!
> Installed some fonts. "Could not load gpu driver". HDMI port stops working. Unable to repair. Entering despair.
> Surviving on dual-booted windows.
I dunno if you gents remember the Nickelodeon show known as Drake and Josh.
It was pretty big in Mexico and the U.S.
Well, one of the characters from that show is the singer/actor Drake Bell.
For a while, Drake Bell would **constantly** tweet about how much Justin Bieber sucks.
I aint denying that Justin Bieber sucks, i don't like his music at all.
But the constant attacks came out as jealousy, at least to me.
What does this has to do with development or even computers? Well this is EXACTLY how I feel about Louis Rossman CONSTANTLY making videos about apple products.
We get it man we really do, sadly for a lot of us the only way to get ios development done is through a fucking Mac
EVEN if his whiny ass is right about the hardware not being top notch and all that shit I AM still not able to explain a 2013(early...as in january) macbook pro still working with literally NO fucking problems. Before that the other macbook was just changed because we wanted the 2013 model. The thing worked, the one before did so too and the 2017 model that I have works, amazingly so i will add.
Still, the army of dell,hp and lenovo laptops that I've had before just died or are not functioning properly. Either it is my shit luck or Apple's "shitty hardware" got something really fucking right.
I think its retarded really. If you don't like them then fine, you don't have to, personally I fucking love all computers and os, but I don't get fanboys hating for the sake of hate.
the fuck you care if I spend 2500 on a computer? I would the same shit for your mom and the computer would last me longer.
Does owning multiple macs make me better than you? No
Does this mean that you are piss poor and can't afford shit and that is why you are hating? No
Will I call you <insert number of insults> gor your choice of pc or os? No
What is retarded is this: you all are DEVELOPERS(at least a good chunk) and your ass better fucking know that some people USE a certain tool because IT IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR THE JOB.
It is a damn fine operating system, a really good computing experience. It ain't your taste? Fine, das cool, but for fucks sake it does not mean that the other people are idiots or whatever.
Grow the fuck up and get yourself an opinion.20
After struggling all morning with my laptop, I finally accepted the fact that my 1TB hard drive died. Now I'm on a dilemma: Should I replace the drive and upgrade the RAM, or should I buy a new laptop altogether?
Current laptop is Lenovo G50-45, with AMD APU, 6GB (4+2 on graphics) and said 1TB drive.
Before this misfortune befell me, I was planning to upgrade the RAM to 8+2.
Now I'm at a loss, but my folks are willing to help.
Should I buy a new drive and RAM or should I start looking a new more dev oriented laptop? If the latter, any recommendations?3
just a poll i'm looking for from all the linux based dev's
What distro would you recommend for a front end dev? Tried ubuntu but the wifi driver wasnt supported I guess in my dev machine. Currently looking at Elementary OS, but still undecided. I would primarily like it to be Debian based or something close as I'm very familiar with apt-get debain based stuff, and dont really feel like learning an entirely new distro at them moment.
Thanks all :D
PS. I have a Lenovo Ideapad 110
Specs include quad-core AMD A-8, 8gb ram, 1TB HDD, can give more if necessary11
It was the only company which used to provide great budget android smartphone with stock android and regular updates. (ranting this on my Moto G3) But from moto G3, they fucked up with promised android OS upgrade (shitty Lenovo)
Microsoft (for fucking with windows 10):
Still remember that first stable build of windows 10 released in 2015. After the first update they never stopped fucking with user's computer with different bugs. Still I haven't seen any build as stable as first one.1
Go fuck yourself Lenovo,
Your ideapad-batteries are shit.
My ideapad 320s didn't have a giant battery-time to begin with, but now, after having it for 14 months, it already lost 9 percent capacity, and the loss seems to get faster.
Every time I check upower, after I charged it, the max-capacity is a little lower.
If it will continue like this, my laptop might be pretty much unusable in about 2 months.3
Just curious why I see so many devs drooling over Lenovo devices... I personally think they are some of the worst designed hardware around but seems like I'm in the miniscule minority here...7
Oh yeah, that one's good.
So it's been at least one year since my Lenovo Y520 (bought about 18months ago) has been throttling its i5 at 800Mhz for no reason.
The thing was so fucking slow, you can't even imagine.
A few months back I found why: the fucking processor raised a PROCHOT flag constantly, even though it never exceeded 60°C.
So now, everytime I boot my computer, I have to run a fucking script to reset this fucking flag. Seriously Lenovo, what the fuck?
Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍12
Keyboard in my laptop died, mobo issue. Work gave me an ex-lease Dell E6430s. First thing I did was dual boot with Ubuntu 16.10 - can't believe how smooth it was. When I put Debian on my Lenovo G570 I had a ton of issues. I love Linux.
Need advice with buying a notebook.
I fell in love with the Lenovo X1 Carbon.
It comes with a FHD display, WQHD and a 4K OLED.
I thought about getting the 4K OLED to safe battery since I’m dev and everything is dark anyway.
However, the internet says, that using 4K, drains the battery quickly and for long battery life one should get the FHD.
So I wonder, which one has more impact: 4times the pixels or pixels just barley illuminated...
Maybe someone has experiences with that :)11
So yesterday I made a rant about my tablet taking a shit and going bye bye. Well, today I'd like to introduce my new Lenovo Ideapad 110 Touch 15ACL with
An AMD A8 8GB RAM processor
Window 10 Pro OS
Yea im not going to list everything thats too much7
i bought a new laptopand i can't fucking install ubuntu on it
and my supervisor asked me to show him ubuntu running on this laptop
before anyone points out that i m a noob
I have already installed ubuntu, arch mint on my pc
here are the specs:
lenovo model 320 ideapad
ubuntu 18.04, 16.04 17.04
and the ubuntu fucking hangs as soon as i get to the gui screen
found something with nomodeset, going to use that
I can't install arch cause I need to show ubuntu running on this laptop to him10
Kudos to Fedora for the 32 workstation release. It works as advertised on Lenovo laptops (even the new ones) OOTB, no issues.
Caveats: It's Wayland with Nvidia graphics disabled and has no fingerprint support, but that goes with the territory. Still an arch adherent personally, but it makes the office engineer laptop story significantly easier.
So my Lenovo X230 with 16gb Ram arrived!
Finally I can run QubesOS on a Laptop without worrying about compatibility2
Buy dell, hp, lenovo and any other craptop company out there and fire all the numbnuts working there so that they slowly die of unemployment in the fucking gutters where their useless asses rightly belong. Oh and castrate them too so that they don't reproduce.
I'm considering going full Lannister on them but that might be too harsh.5
The tags disappear from your drafts.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Also I can't scroll through the tag suggestions.
Is it a bug or a feature ? @dfox
(This still happens even after updating the Android App)
I'm using a Lenovo device with Android M.2
Soo insyde BIOS got a big bug via 17.10 ubuntu iso
- Settings not getting saved in bios
- USB booting is a no-go.
- suspend never wakes up without battery removal
Infected systems mostly include acer, LENoVO and hp mainly
I am surprised it took them this long to notice the bug.8
Now i think Microsoft just want to use the win 10 users as testers.
After getting anniversary update windows started showing application not responding message for the FUCKING WINDOWS itself .
like if The OS itself is not responding shouldn't it just show BSOD rather than freezing?
Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to go into recovery mode without the shift+restart , it just wasted a WHOLE DAY .
And my laptop(lenovo Z50-70) has pretty common hardware.
I learned my lesson and deferred Updates But for Some versions of windows That's not even an option.6
Google delays launch of Lenovo Phab2 pro by a month.. and launches Pixel..
maybe because nobody would buy Pixel if both were launched together..
(Coz Phab2 has Tango and thus the first phone that will actually support AR!)3
Can't wait for this guy to arrive, were going to build some beautiful stuff together.
I had to return my Asus due to a screen defect.8
My new shitty lenovo work laptop, running windows 7 on 4 gigs of ram made in the last decade, suddenly decided to run windows updates from 6 months ago, and is currently running update 7/22. Which it's been doing for literally 4 hours.
If someone's country legally allows euthanasia, please let me know.7
FOR FUCK SAKE Lenovo
bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 700 for my study and added extra ram. the fun began, my battery started jumping from full to empty and now with the extra memory far away back to the factory it is still happening now the store and Lenovo told me to use this piece of shit to go back to factory and see if it still happens.3
Aaayoo issya boi the OG rapper straight outta Compton, wassup?!
Nah, for real, though.: How are y'all doing? It has been a long time. I hope y'all are having a great time (can sense some peoples' incoming negative comments due to corona).
I built my completely new first gaming rig like a few weeks ago after my school laptop stopped showing any signals.
The specifications are the following.:
- Mobo: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (no iGPU)
- dGPU: KFA2 RTX 2070 SUPER OC
- 2nd dGPU: GTX 550 TI (this one gets a new rant/post)
- RAM: 2x G.SKILL Ripjaws V 8 GB 3600 MHz
- PSU: Be quiet 650 W (It was the platinum edition afaik. I originally bought the 600 Watt Gold edition, but somehow they sent me the 650 Watt for no additional charge... which is great for me haha)
- HDD: 2x 4TB NAS HDD in RAID1 configuration (to load all of my games around 2 TB right now. Got the two HDDs for 110 Euro including the SATA Data cables)
- SSD: One Intenso 240 GB SSD and a reused Samsung 256 GB SSD from my old broken Lenovo laptop
- Case: Be quiet Pure Base 500 black with a glass panel on the side
While building my first PC, it was one hell of a challenge. I knew how it all was working in theory, but to put it all together, practically, was a bit of a challenge, but it was a nice challenge. I learned a lot and have a performance gain I could only ever dream of.
I used to play my games first on a Toshiba satellite l750d laptop (around 40 fps in cs:go with the lowest gfx settings) and then on a Lenovo e51-80 laptop (around 30 fps max minecraft with no shaders and texture packs).
Now I play cs:go on Kubuntu with 400 fps at peak with ultra high graphics. It is unbelievable.
I couldn't trust the system when I turned on the fps display the first time I saw it.9
I have got a Lenovo B590 laptop windows 10 from 2012/2013.
It is some kind of default laptop(not fast af).
I NEVER saw the bluescreen. NEVER1
to all those Lenovo guys who are wondering how to bypass raid for installing linux:
boot from live usb and rewrite the partition table from raid to something else using gparted. and done. I had this issue long time ago.
p.s. try at ur own risk. data will be lost.
I'm opening a case against Lenovo due to their bad warranty support. It's been over a month and a half since I reported an issue with my ThinkPad and they still haven't fixed it. The laptop was bought in September, the case opened in October and in December I still have a faulty screen with which I can't no longer work because it was frying my eyes. Note that this machine has a Warranty Extension for 3 years Onsite next business day repair.
TL;DR if you own a ThinkPad, pray that it doesn't have any hardware issues. If you're thinking about buying one, DON'T!5
So my laptop battery just turned from ~21000 MWh capacity to ~3500 MWh within one night, and it literally can't be charged above 300 MWh.... I can't even do much without it just running out of power even though my charger's plugged in... Urghhhhh thanks Lenovo for making/using cheap hardware8
Thinking of getting a new laptop.
Lenovo v330 i7-8550u , 8GB DDR4
Asus vivobook s15 i7-7500u , 8GB DDR4
Which one ?16
Looking for a laptop < 1,000 € for running a clean install of Linux (i.e. no double booting or running a VM). Looking at Asus, HP and Lenovo. Do you have experience with any of these brands? I want something durable with a nice keyboard and screen, and something that will be the most compatible with Linux. So far the Asus ZenBook UX331UA sounds the best. Any other suggestions?2
Currently I own a Lenovo Thinkpad which I bought in 2013. As it is aging, I'm thinking about a replacement. Where would you buy a new laptop, constraints:
- Swiss keyboard (or Option to swap it for one)
- compatible with Linux (prefered if there's a option without Windows pre instaled)
- NVMe SSD
- good battery live
- abillity to upgrade the RAM in the future
I've been looking at System76 now for a while, but since I've worked with Swiss keyboards for the last 12 years, I don't want to switch to an en_us layout...
So where do you buy your laptops?11
So after previously telling the story of my laptop in the rain, I thought I should follow up with this one. (this is couple months later)
My laptop was bought second hand by my father (who doesn't know anything about computers) and the poor thing had a tendency to overheat. It worked fine, but under heavy load it would only last a couple minutes before it shut down.
So once I was cleaning out the fan (as dust accumulated in there) and I ran it under the tap, to get everything off. Sure, you might cringe at the idea but I thought some water wouldn't hurt it, especially after surviving en evening in the rain. So I cleaned it and let it dry.
A while later, when it finished drying I started to reassemble my laptop. After about 30 mins of fiddling with it, it was back together and ready for a fresh start! So I powered it on.
Sparks flew. Smoke started coming off the motherboard. More sparks.
I pulled the cord. "Fuck, glad I caught it on time..."
I waited a while longer. Turn it back on. "Fan is not functioning properly or is missing". FML. After all it had survived, a bit of water in the circuit that made the fan spin is what took it down 😑
Fast forward two years (without a fan, shitty days), and I bought a second hand Lenovo laptop that I adore. So I thought I'd sell the laptop on Ebay, but first I should fix the fan so that I wouldn't have to sell it for next to nothing. Part number was hard to find, and bought it from somewhere in Europe. Four weeks later, the fan arrived at my doorstep.
Took the laptop apart (have I mentioned how hard that was?) and replaced the fan. Felt good to fix what I had ruined two years back. Put it back together (after applying thermal paste, I'm not a monster) and powered it on.
"Fan is not functioning properly or is missing"
After checking the connection a couple times, I realized that what had given out was the motherboard connector for the fan, after the water incident. Wasted 40 dollars and several hours of my time for nothing.
The laptop that survived hours in the rain was taken down by a wee bit of water. So sad.2
Follow-up on my previous Lenovo shipping rant:
After shipping my charger ahead of schedule separately, they've now extended the expected ship date of the main unit from the 4th to the 17th of December, two whole weeks. Expected to arrive December 26, aka the week that I'll be out of town visiting family for christmas :/
This happened last November. I was on my merry way, not using Windows on my laptop. When suddenly a friend asks me to do some heavy video editing work.
And none of the softwares on Linux are as good as Premiere Pro, After Effects etc
Davinci Resolve on Linux has codec issues and is a pain to deal with
Anyway, I boot up windows and somehow it updates itself (I distinctly remember disabling the update service permanently).
So now, it bugs me every fucking minute to reboot.
Luckily I decide to finish my project before rebooting.
Coz as soon as I reboot, it throws me an error saying something like my license key couldn't be verified. One key recovery doesn't help
I have a OEM licensed Windows 10 Home that came with the laptop.
The solutions are to either recover windows, which needs a fucking 11GB download or reinstall Windows (but hey... Lenovo didn't give me a Windows License key. And I have a lot of pre setup folders on the windows drive linked to my Linux, making it a bad choice to wipe that drive). To put the cherry on the top, I have to download a software that Lenovo provides (Windows only) to download that 11GB iso.
Every sane person around me uses Linux (I only used Windows for Video Editing)
Also, living in India, 11GB is a fucking big size to download.... And the software doesn't support interrupted downloads
One more pain in the ass....
So, fuck you Windows. Fuck you Lenovo.
Living happily with elementary OS since then
Never bothered to download the Windows iso6
So I bought an expensive Bluetooth Arc mouse from Microsoft to use with my work pc which is an HP EliteBook running Windows 7 Pro. The HP installs the drivers but the mouse will not work come to find out later that model of HP pretty much does not work with any Bluetooth device. So to make sure the mouse is fine, I try it on my MacBook pro and in about 15 seconds it's up and running.
I have an Apple mouse already so I give the mouse to my wife and she has a Lenovo laptop running the latest Windows 10. Takes forever for the mouse to install and right after I get a driver error. To cut a long story short I had to install an app from the Windows store to make it work. 15 seconds on a Mac versus at least half an hour on Windows to install a Microsoft mouse.4
Is there any solution to the “Preparing Automatic Repair” error in windows?
It has gone in an infinite loop.
I have Lenovo Ideapad 300.7
I've always been a strong critic of the mac operating system and apple in general for they're overpriced products. few months back my old laptop kicked the bucket and repairing it was not an option as i was sick of charging the laptop after every 3-4 hours and had to purchase a new laptop immediately. loooking at my options around 50k rs or 700$ all windows laptops available in indian markets sucked (except for lenovo 320s) so i made the shift to macbook air 2017.my daily work involves photoshop illustrator and a dash of premiere pro. I also work on nodeJS and python using the pycharm and atom IDEs. After using it for a month i feel in love with mac platform and macos. Its a wonderful experience. gone are the days of crashes and the windows updates (ugh). the boot of the laptop is like magic and softwares like wmware imovie and notes keynote are f**king awesome. Long hours of work have become fun rather than hell dealing with constant windows gimmicks and bad battery optimisation on linux.
An explanation why all developers (except for the ones who require high powered gpus) graphic designers should shift to macos rn.
Advantages of using mac
No forced updates update whenever now or a f'ing month later no probs.
better battery optimisation than linux
no more installing os again and again (ubuntu)
better vm than virtualbox (vmware)
terminal for running bash commands
trackpad is worlds better than the best windows trackpad
some softwares not available for macos
storage is generally less on macbooks
UI is simple (less elaborated than windows)
get a vm and install linux(vmware fusion 8)
ps. u may not need it though
wine and wine bottler for using windows apps
get a microsd to sd adapter for macbook and expand storage5
Whatcha thinking about the
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8
(i7-10510U, 16GB, 512GB, 1080p)?
Found one for a dirt cheap price (campus discount) and think about buying it.
I'm largely using linux, including somewhat exotic distros like Void,Gentoo, Alpine.2
Is that me or Lenovo cannot figure out the bios issue I am having with my ideapad-100. The Linux kernel says that the bios has a bug in it and then Windows can't update because the bios has a bug, the bios updater tells me the bios is perfectly fine. This is weird because the laptop is unstable whatever the Os and yeah it did that since I bought it and sent it to be repaired and still the issues goes on
I need your help please !
I'm about to buy a netbook to use it as a portable dev environment ; it should be able to run Eclipse, some code editor, GCC, and a virtual machine.
I've found a Lenovo E135 with 8GB RAM for only 100€ but the main problem is that his processor is an AMD E2-2000 (only 1,75GHz, and AMD)... Will it be enough to do what i want ?
I've also found a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 with a Core i5 (2,6 GHz) and 4 GB RAM for only 170€ but the problem there is the battery (the core i5 consume much more power)
Which one should i buy ? (Knowing that i have only 100€ but i could manage to get the missing 70€ for the x230)
Thanks for your help !10
So my phone updated to Android 5.1.1 (can't remember the actual number of the update) against my will. I chose no a couple of times. One day I woke up and pop! New version for you! Yay!!!
Now my battery is draining faster then ever before. Camera is freezing sometimes. I hate you Lenovo. My Vibe K5 was such a glorious phone, for my use of course, but now it's just a desk phone since it's always plugged in a power outlet 😒5
I am thinking of a new Laptop for developing abroad. Also because my PC is to much power crunching.
I first thought of an MacBook. Thanks to my human intelligence I have thrown away this idea.
I may want to use an surface pro (not the beefiest one, just like i5, 8gb RAM and 265ssd) or an laptop with Linux flash.
Because I am used to develop in Windows environment I might choose the surface. I really love Linux but as I progress in my (jet many, but not enough) languages I might stay at windows.
I wouldn't choose any HP or Lenovo laptop any more, only bad experience.
What do you guys think? Any other opinions?
Edit: I want to use it for:
- Java Application Development
- C#/C Development
- Server Development
- Game Development
- Network Adminstration
- Server Administration
- Some Random Stuff6
For the past couple years, every single time I'd visit my grandparents house, my grandmother would always have an assortment of issues with her aging Lenovo 2-in-1 for me to "solve" (the last issue she had was an inability to figure out what "tablet mode" was and called me because she couldn't figure out how to get out of the start menu) .
But for christmas she got an iMac. Because most of the family uses Apple products, and since it should be simpler to use, I most likely won't be the first one she goes to when she has an issue.
So as a devote Linux user, I'm torn: should I be happy I no longer have to answer stupid questions (at least, not as many)? Or saddened that one more poor soul will now be sucked into the Apple ecosystem?
Mind you, I will be turning her old 2-in-1 into a linux server so it can actually be put to some use.3
Hey, is there a site where i can search laptops from every manufacturer, not just a shop specific one, where they only list the ones they sell?
Or alternatively, is there a 14" amd ultra-ish book that is not acer asus or lenovo?5
Now Mac OSX works on my Lenovo Y580. It also runs Windows 10 and Linux Mint. All main OSs on one old Laptop take that Apple.5
Ok I'm totally lost...
here is my list
Lenovo Legion Y740
Lenovo Legion Y540
Or just get a desktop ?
Usages: Gaming (not that hardcore)
hi everyone just want your input planing to get a cheap laptop for development
Option1: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB HDD
Option2: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: AMD Ryzen 3 2200U / 4GB DDR4 / 256 SSD
Option3: ASUS X407UA
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB
im going cheapest as possible but it you guys think going to i5 would benefit more let me know18
Great. How am I supposed to put in my SSD? There's probably an extra screw somewhere I can't see locking it in...
Went to order a new laptop for work today, so I can stop using my own. The one we usually get is no longer configurable, and instead is just "buy it off the shelf". Thanks Lenovo. Always wanted 4gb of ram.7
I’m shopping around for a new laptop and would like some recommendations.
Looking at Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude, Intel i5 2nd gen 2GHz - 3GHz, 200GB - 500GB ssd
Budget is a concern, I’m not trying to spend over $400.
Gah. So i replaced my Laptops HDD with an SSD. So far, so cool, but in the process i fucked up the keyboard. Its one of those that kinda click into place. Frames broken in one or two spots and there's a chunk missing at the top. I mean, it still works fine, but it looks ugly where the chunk is missing and the left side feels a bit too soft. And a new keyboard with German Layout would cost almost 70€ (English layout only 30€ WTF!) LENOVO, Y U DO DIS!6
Cheap laptops for running Kali/Arch? Will be used for learning penetration testing.
Was thinking an older Lenovo Thinkpad or something like that?1
What Distribution would you recommend specifically for laptop use. I've jumped around a lot but every distro seems to have some issue with the laptop (sound, stupid switchable graphics, wifi issues, etc).
I always seem to find a distro I like, but Lenovo seems to not like.11
Got my hands on a Lenovo Explorer for 150€ throughout Black Friday. It delivers next week, really excited for it!
Coming from console gaming, is it possible for me to get a decent gaming laptop for under a grand. I've been looking at Lenovas legion but I honestly know hardly anything about shopping computers despite being a programmer. Its specs are here https://lenovo.com/us/en/...8
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 330s and it shows the battery percentage remaining when we press any key on the keyboard while the laptop is switched off. This is a really handy feature. Does anyone know how it is implemented or how could it be implemented (on other laptops) ?
Don't just ++, favorite this post, pin it (so, you can comment on it if you find the way later) and please, mention it in the comments if you know it.5
Hello, I'm looking for a new machine but since I'm not very good with hardware, I'd like to ask for help:
I have a 7yrs old lenovo ideapad Y580, and even though I don't really play anymore on pc, I still would like the machine to last.
At first I was thinking about a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 - Intel 10th Gen, but maybe I should go with a gaming laptop for the sake of the good specs? But then, which one? MSI, alienware ...?
And I'm a front-end, so I still need to be able to open graphic files.
Digging tunnels with spoons
So I am a junior full stack dev in biggest e-shop in our region and they have a bad reputation among devs. I knew it, but no one hired me except them because of my lack of experience and skills. But for heaven’s sake - they issue 15 euro keyboard, 8 euro mouse and piece of crap Lenovo v330(i7 but I hate that it’s made of styrofoam). Tell me - am I too spoiled or is is really a disgrace to give someone a cheapest tools available?26
I want to make a phone designed for programming. I want to use something like the pine phone and either load or make a custom OS for this purpose. I've found my self sitting some where doing nothing and having an idea that I would like to test but either don't have a laptop or don't have the space to use my laptop (Lenovo x240). I would love to hear your suggestions for base phones and custom ROMS or OS to use. I am on a bit of a budget however I would be willing to spend a bit along as it's worth the price.7
Bool rant: true;
Bool dev: false;
I purchased my Lenovo P90 a year ago and it never updated since.
Lenovo even took the P90 off the upgrade plan. Is that why I spent around 350$ on it?
I'm sill running android 4.4.4 and can't find a ROM because the phone is intel based.
When I asked them in E-Mail I got a copy-pasted anwser to use the phones update function(it returns that I'm running the newest version)1
I have a Windows 10 installation on my laptop...
A few weeks back my father bought an SSD for his Lenovo ThinkPad T500. Problem was - I couldn't install Windows on that laptop due to legacy BIOS (the T500 is old but gold). My solution was that I put the SSD into my eSATA portable HDD / SSD rack, and I installed Windows to the SSD on my laptop. It worked, but now, when I boot up my laptop it always asks which Windows do I want to boot up (only one Windows is present - the other throws an error). I switched the defaults, and now it boots up fine, but that choice really slows down my usually fast SSD boot (it has a 10 second timer before automatically chosing the default option).
How can I reconfigure it?
Or is it only possible by a clean install?4
I'm looking to get a laptop, and I want your opinion on which one to get, because I'm a dev and don't care about whatever most reviews are looking at. Here is what I want from it:
1. I'll be running linux on it
2. I need it to be powerful enough to go through heavy development
3. It has to be decent sized 15" and below
4. It needs to stay cool under light load, under heavy load I've got a good cooling pad
5. Battery is not that important, and discrete graphics are not that important
I will be hooking it up to a keyboard/mouse/monitor setup when at home or work
Any suggestions? I've been looking at lenovo thinkpads for their ruggedness and dependability and Dell laptops as they've been around for a long time. Ultrabooks (like the XPS) are appealing but I don't know how well they deal with heat and thermal throttling under heavy load?1
Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (and possibly (m)any other NVidia GPU laptops)
framerate fluctuations in any game - runs silky smooth for few minutes, then drops to borderline unplayable framerates for a few minutes.
Thousands of people across dozens, maybe hundreds of internet forums having this problem for years, since the thing was released.
I personally lost at least 20 hours trying to solve it, and had the laptop in gaming-unusable state because of it for the past half a year.
...yesterday I FOUND A SOLUTION!
1. Download NVidia Inspector by Orbmu2k
(some hobbyist hacker type)
2. use its "profile inspector" to flip an internal setting in nvidia driver.
3. flip "Enable application for Optimus" to SHIM_RENDERING_MODE_ENABLE to basically tell the "Optimus" crap to fuck off.
(not sure why the value is called this, because it's clearly disabling the thing)
4. the thing works flawlessly silky smooth again.
...thousands of people across dozens, maybe hundreds of forums...
...i could be their Lord and Savior...
...if only I weren't too lazy to hike across all of them and register just to post the solution.
(tech forums really should have some "I HAVE A SOLUTION but if i have to register I won't bother")
Lenovo Yoga and Linux
I'm looking for a laptop. I found the Lenovo IdeaPad 520s, but then I found the Yoga 520 for around the same price with the same specs. I was very interested, until I read about the whole Yoga 900 RAID to AHCI drama where people were unable to install Linux and Lenovo ended up providing a Linux-only BIOS update.
Can someone tell me if I would have problems installing Arch Linux on such laptop? Would I be better off buying the IdeaPad 520s? Both laptops don't have a PCIe SSD, they just have M.2 SSD. Does this mean there won't be a problem? I'm so confused.
This might not be the right place to ask, but everyone seems to be so kind to each other here on devrant...17
question goes to lenovo ThinkPad users...
option 1: It is possible to replace the hdd with a new ssd;
option 2: you can install a ssd extra to the existing hdd;
? im confused10
Hey pals, I'm thinking about buying a new laptop.
I will run a linux-distro on it and use it mostly for dev-stuff,video-streaming,etc..
I'm currently eyeballing a Lenovo Campus Thinkpad T490.
With i7 (4x up to 4.6GHz, 8 threads), 16GB ram.
Would it be a good choice or would you recommended something else?14
Background: Got a macbook, A external HDD(2TB) of which +- 1TB was used.
Yesterday i moved all my personal projects from my work laptop to my external, to move to my macbook.
One of my clients(Freelancing) calls asking me to install new hardware, install software and fix OS(Windows 8.1).
I leave work and go directly to said client and he hands over his Lenovo S20 Touch(No CD/DVD Drive).
I install windows 10 and other software from my flash(Already on there)
Good, Everything is ready to go. I go home and finally get to sit down with my baby(MacBook)
Me: *Plugs in external*
Opens Finder, can't find flashdrive
Client: Hey is everything ok with the laptop, no viruses no nothing. Because everytime i insert a flashdrive it gets a virus and i have to buy a new one.
Me: I installed windows 10 on it, it should be fine with defender now.
Heart: *shattered* YOU COULD'VE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE FUCKER!!
i never knew people like this still exist1
I can't wait until I feel like Dr. Frankenstein when I build my PC this week. My first real computing rig!!
Some backstory: My main dev machine is my old Lenovo laptop running Ubuntu (my baby). I took Windows off of it when I got a Surface through a job and have been using that for Windows specific work. I'm going to be giving that to my little sister next time I travel home. In short, this is the first computer that will be able to cut through anything I throw at it and play games that aren't at least 6 years old.
The build is centered around an i5-8400 and gtx 1060 6GB, and I'll be running Windows as a primary OS for gaming. However, I fell in love with programming on Linux and there is no way Linux won't be on my machine. I understand the differences between dual-booting and virtualization, but I want to hear how you guys run Linux on your Windows gaming machines or if you go about it another way. I also have heard horror stories about drivers for Linux, and wonder if my graphics card being certified by Ubuntu LTS actually means that it will operate correctly. I have also only ran VMs on crappy computers so I haven't had any experiences where that performed better than dual-booting. I'd love some feedback or to hear about all of your setups, as hardware has never been my strong suit.
I'll post a pic of my setup when it's done too.4
Any recommendation (super) thin laptop under $1000?
I think of lenovo yoga, but I don't need the touch screen, and I think it's just upping the price.17
So one of my first rants was about me unable to setup Debian with (lightdm) Cinnamon to be working with optimus laptop and to make the damn hdmi port work, where the port is attached to the nvidia gpu (vga passthrough?)
I have to try it with another distro because the dual-booted Windows greatly feeds my procrastination. (Like ... Factorio, Stellaris, Rimworld and etc. type of procrastination, it's getting somewhat severe. )
So what would you people of devrant recommend me to try? I am thinking a lot about Arch but I am afraid there will be a lot more problems with the lenovo drivers for various things.
The next one is classical Ubuntu, at the end this distro looks like it's at least trying to work amongst other distro's.
Also thought about Fedora because yum and RedHat. ( ..lol )
I fucked off windows OS I.e.
I just installed Linux Ubuntu 16.04Lts, on Lenovo Ideapad 110-15ISK
Way happier now ☺️😊3
update on the Lenovo shit laptop.
getting a new custom made laptop with better specs sadly had to give away 2gb video ram but I can live with that it also comes with a third disk so let the O's recommendations come.
specs will be in a comment3
Just Realized... I have like 1 of every device... I'm a full on fence sitter...
iPhone X -- work phone
Huawei p20 -- personal phone
MacBook -- work laptop
Lenovo ThinkPad running Arch Linux -- personal laptop
Window Surface -- research/teaching laptop (use it when I teach and need to bring notes)
Gaming PC -- Gaming PC
And all of this took ~5 years to garner... Geez... I like all of these devices too (and sometimes i hate em) Holy...1
Printer shit continued: So we got this great Lenovo Ideapad with a Windows, so why not print from there? Installed driver from webpage and really printed nicely.
Then I removed ton of Lenovo's crapware + McAfee (leftovers luckily were cleaned by McAfee's tool), so that this shitty device could be used reasonably - device would deserve rants on its own. AND boom, Windows USB printer driver seems broken beyond repair. Printer not even recognized. Shouldn't it all be plug'n'play?4
Howdy, any great black friday offers?
The new Surface is roughly $300 cheaper at MS, about $1000. Looking for cheaper alternatives, Lenovo and alike. Any ideas?2
Hello Devs, Please Suggest Me A Good Laptop.
Specs I Probably Need:
256 or 512 SSD
i7 6th gen
8 or 16 GB DDR4 RAM
Dedicated Graphics or Touch Screen(Ultrabook or something)
Really Confused between Yoga 910 and Lenovo Y700. Or what will be the best device(Portable and Powerful) for us?6
Does anyone else share the love for lenovo laptopd when it comes to coding? Price, specs and sexy keyboard :o3
I can't seem to use the novo recovery mode using my standard keyboard...fuck you lenovo and fuck you windows!!!!! Its been days trying to fix this fucking pc!!!...I know i should have bought a freaking dell instead of this m***** fucking cunt of a pc! I have an external keyboard you cunt why don't you suck it up your ports and let me do my shit!!
What laptops do you guys use for programming and general studenting? (if you're a student). I'm partly just interested and partly in need of recommendations as my current Lenovo Z50 75 has all but died.6
I wished to buy a MBP for myself, but this new version. I am not going to need any of that fancy touchbar and all. But again the previous version is too old. Looking for other options (lenovo preferably)4
Trying to decide between the new Dell XPS 13 Developer edition and the Lenovo yoga 920......
Oh and the MacBook pro is a dark horse....
Which one should i get?
Dell E6220-6230 or Lenovo X220-230?
Maybe save up a little bit for a Dell E7240?8
dell or lenovo thinkpad.... really confused... any personal suggestions. will be mostly used for visual studio and SQL server.7
Having some issues with my laptop seizing up in graphical linux desktop environments, probably due to some peripheral power management. I saw there was a bios setting for "make linux work" but I couldn't find mention of it in the manual (why is this usually so hard to find, anyway?), so I googled a bit before I messed with it.
Worst case I guess I'd just reset the bios, but it always blows my mind seeing issues like these go seemingly unaddressed. That's a 12 page discussion from 2018 where you brick your laptop - a fairly high end one at that - by flipping a bool and the latest response is "Same issue here".
Is it just PR practice to not acknowledge these things or is it likely that they are legitimately unaware? Does it not get escalated properly or do they reckon there's not enough benefit to address it?
Whatever the case, my faith in Lenovo is certainly starting to show cracks. I used to see it as the "correct" laptop brand, but nowadays I'm equally iffy about all of them.3
How can Lenovo produce such a shitfest as this ideapad laptop. I lack the swear words to describe in how many ways it sucks. Looks nice from the outside, light. But even after deinstalling all Lenovo crap ware and McAffee, reinstalling Windows it was still so slow that I wished I still had my Win 3.11 on that 66 MHz (+33MHz Turbo Button)! All this waiting if you start an application or open a browser tab - it let's you hate computers, want to punch that piece of Pferdeäpfelsmoothie.1
I got a new babe today, Lenovo Yoga 550, i7, 256 SSD...hw do u advice I utilize.. should i partition and have windows OS and my sweet Ubuntu & Arch linux(s) on d base or just vm them on windows..cuz honestly if not for few wares, i hv no business with windows..pls advice.3
Need to get some of your opinions about computer. I have always been using IBM/Lenovo or HP with Windows as operating system, due to work needs and policies. But, this weekend I purchased a new apple MacBook Air, and I want to know what you think about my choice. It is just for personal use, so I will continue to use my hp with win10 at work (needed for the erp system I'm consulting).
I choose MacBook Air as my personal computer because I think the hardware and chassi is a bit more premium to a pretty low cost, looking on hp or Lenovo with the same class of chassi and build is at least 150% more expensive. Let me know your comment :)2
I'm kinda looking for a new phone, should be super cheap (so a used one would do), I wanna modify it to be secure (proper encryption, VPN, etc.), very good battery time and not very big (more like 4"). I have been looking at the Lenovo P2 a lot, but I'm afraid my current phone will die before I have enough money for that one (I'm a broke trainee yay).
So what do y'all have or can recommend?3
I use a Lenovo Thinkpad T580 with Ubuntu for work (the company I work for has given it to me). What gaming laptop do you recommend?10
Garbage Lenovo Carbon X1 is garbage.
Plugged it in to charge this afternoon for multiple hours, then carry it to the train. Open it up for some in-transit dev time and...
...it's dead. Fuck sakes!1
I have question related to hardware -
I recently order a M.2 SSD on amazon but I don't know is it compatible or not with my system and I order it can anybody help me I am really apricate it.
My SSD link on amazon -
My system link -
why the fuck my angular solution does not open in visual studio? why the fuck does lenovo hangs when i open visual studio? why the fuck the angular library purchased by company fucks developer with 30 mb of crap?1
I've spent a week now. Lenovo laptops, specifically the ones that aren't high end like the ThinkPad or the Yogas have shit compatibility with Linux.
For some really weird reason the colors look like I'm using a 16 bit and lib-input just wouldn't work properly with my track pad.
I can live with the display but can't simply remove lib-input and switch to synaptic without deleting the whole gnome-shell on the Ubuntu Gnome.
I deleted windows and there's no fucking way to reset the battery threshold back to 100% from 60% without installing windows because there's no driver for it. Tlp along with ThinkPad configurations doesn't help too.
Guys what do you think of the laptop
Lenovo y700 touch model???
Or any other similar laptop that you suggest.1
Lenovo x240, x230 or T430 and why. It won't be my primary device, I do most of my work at home on my desktop, I just want a laptop to school and when I go to cofee. I'm a working with Go, Vue and Flutter1
I'm trying to install OSX on a Lenovo Windows machine.
Since Hackintosh was taken down, any recommendations on a clean way of doing so?4
