So I accidentally published my AWS keys to GitHub, stupid me. I realize this the next day.

4 weeks later, I finally have this shit disputed and settled.

Don't test with hardcoded keys. You WILL forget about them. Env vars always. That is all.

An intern I was supposed to lead (as an intern) and work with. Which sounded kinda crazy to me, but also fun so I rolled with it. But when I met her I quickly found out she didn't even have a coding editor installed and when I advised one she was "scared of virusses". Oke maybe first some R&D, she had to reaeach how to use the Twilio API. After catching her on WhatsApp a few times I realised this wasnt gonna go anywere. After a few weeks of coding and posting a initial project to git I asked her if she could show me the code of the API she made so far..

She told me she was using the quickstart guide (the last 3 FUCKING weeks) which contained some test project with specific use cases.

The one that I did 3 weeks ago that same fucking morning.

A few days later I asked her about the progress (strangly, I wasn't allowed ti give her another task bcs the freelanc already did) and guess what... She got fking pissed at me

Really... the whole fucking internship the only thing the girl did was ask people if they want more tea. Then she starts cleaning the windows, talk to people for an hour, or clean everyone's dask.

all this while I already made 50% of the fucking product and she just finished the quickstart tutorial 😭. Truly 2 months wasted, and the worse thing is I didn't get any apprication. They constantly blamed me and whined at me. Sometimes for being 3 minutes late, the other for smoking too much, or because I drink to much coffee, or that I dont eat healthy. They even forced me to play Ping Pong. While im just trying to do my job. One of the worst things they got mad at me for if when my laptop got hacked bcs it was infected with some virus. ...even if it's just a typo in the commit message

Even if you are solo, use version control and commit often. When you are working on something completely new, git reset --hard can really get you out of a bind.

Just delete the whole local repo and clone again!

I think the reason why git beginners have a hard time with it is because the api is a bit untuitive.

For example: if you want to "unstage" staged changes, you run git reset, and if you want to "delete" those changes from your working copy, you git checkout those files.

But then, you find out that you can do all of that if you git add . and git reset --hard.
So you're like "huh..."

And then you discover that if you end the resethard with a branch name/commit id then you also make current branch point to the commit or that branch/commit (respectively).
So you're like "huh..."

And also if you add a commit id or branch name to git checkout, you change the current branch to specified/enter detached state with HEAD pointing to that commit (respectively).

Oh and you don't use git branch to create branches, you use git checkout -b because it's a lot shorter.

So here's a rundown: git reset mutates things related to files, but also mutates things related to branches.
git checkout also mutates things related to files and mutates things related to branches too (in a diff way). Also, creates new branches.

I don't think this is intuitive. We users use the same commands for different purposes with just a different flag.
Commands shouldn't mutate different types of things. But don't composite commands (as in, "smart" commands that mutate different things) shoudln't be a flag in an existing command, it should be a single new command of its own.

Maybe if I reread the internals of git now, I'll be able to disgest the dozens of technical terms they throw at you (they are many). And in my mind, the api will cognitively fit to the explanations.

Here's another one that feels weird too.
If you want to make your changes start on top of someone else's commit, you do git rebase.
But git rebase -i can be used for that, and also to delete, modify changes or message of, reorder or combine previous commits of the current branch.

Maybe the reason why several things we do overlap with the same commands is because they internally do similar things, and while not separating those commands might make it less intuitive, it makes them more sensible? i dunno...

disclaimer: I'm not setting this opinion in stone though, and am aware that git was created by one of the most infuential programmers.

Used a starter to scaffold a new project. Have never used that starter before but it has more than 1400 starts on Github.

Two days after.... so far so good. The created project structure used some tools I haven't used before, some are good, others are not so good, but anyway I am towards the first release of my codes. I have done countless 'npm run build', 'npm run test', 'npm run fix', etc., but.... my fault, I haven't committed once since starting the project, thinking I would commit when the next function is implemented, next test case passed.... after all, what could go wrong anyway?

Finally, one last test case passed, I think I will commit and run 'npm publish'.... but wait, had a glimpse of the scripts section in package.json, there's a command named 'all'. An voice came out of nowhere was talking to my subconscious mind, "all.... build, lint, prettier, test..... yeah you should run all... it's another build script, the worst you can get is just some harmless error messages.....", and my fingers typed 'npm run all'...

Time stopped for a few seconds, file structure in project explorer was shifting, files & folders were disappearing & appearing, what's happening... and I looked at the 'all' script closely for the first time....

WHAT THE HELL, WHO SHOULD PUT 'git reset --hard' IN A BUILD SCRIPT WITHOUT ANY PROMPT????!!!!!!!

This was probably MS customer service's idea to make their life easier.

Git is good. Even when I do stupid things like reset a commit I wasn't supposed to, it gives me the chance to fix those mistakes.

I love git stash.

It's helps a lot for doing refactors to me. I guess it's not the most complex workflow, but it wasn't obvious to me when I started with git. Let me explain.

Refactors. As you start writing the first lines of a refactor, you start to notice something: you're changing too many things, your next commit is going to be huge.

That tends to be the very nature of refactors, they usually affect different parts of code.

So, there you are, with a shitload changes, and you figure "hey, I have a better idea, let me first do a smaller cohesive commit (let's call it subcommit) that changes a smaller specific thing, and then I'll continue with the upper parts of the refactor".

Good idea, but you have a shitload of changes nearly touching every file in your working copy, what do you do with these changes? You git stash them.

Let's say you stash and try to do that smaller "subcommit". What sometimes happens to me at this point is that I notice that I could do an even smaller change inside this current "subcommit". So I do the same thing, I git stash and I work on that even smaller thing.

At some point I end up `git stash pop`ing up all these levels. And it it shows that git stash is powerful for this.

* You never lose a single bit of work you did.
* Every commit is clean.
* After every commit you can run tests (automated or manual) to see shit is still working.
* If you don't like some changes that you had git stashed, you can just erase them with git reset --hard.
* If a change overlaps between a stash you're applying and the last "subcommit", then
if they differ, git shows conflicts on the files,
if they are identical, nothing happens.

with this workflow things just flow and you don't need to wipe out all your changes when doing simpler things,
and you don't need to go around creating new branches with temp commits (which results in bloated temp commits and the work of switching branches).

After you finish the refactor, you can decide to squash things with git rebase.

(Note: I don't use git stash pop, because it annoys the fuck out of me when I pop and you I get conflicts, I rather apply and drop)

And this is where the troubles begin. The file was commited 2 commits ago, so I have to roll back to then. However, the remote repository has been updated since then, so I git fetch to keep up to date.

This makes the rollback a hell of a lot harder, so I run git log to see the history. I try a reset, but I went back to the wrong commit, and now a shit ton of files are out of sync.

I frantically google 'reset a git reset', and come across the reflog command. Running that fucks things up even worse, and now so much shit is out of sync that even git seems confused.

I try to fix the mess I've created, and so I git pull from my forked repo to get myself back to where I was. Git starts screaming at me about out of sync files, so I try to find a way to overwrite local changes from the origin.

And by this point, the only way to describe what the local repo looks like is a dumpster fire clusterfuck that was involved in a train wreck

I resolved the mess by just deleting the local copy and git cloning again from my fork.

I gotta learn how to use Git better

People who delete a repo and clone again instead of a hard reset because 'they can't undo the changes they made" are the kind of people who shouldn't be using git in the first place.

So recently i started using sublime merge. Found the ui kinda useful to review and stage files. Today i was double checking my staged files in smerge and bam! staged files worth an hour disappear! I am pretty sure i didnt click anything. It has to be sublime merge... right?? i could see an undo reset option in menu which didnt work.

Wtf!?! after some time (unpredictable 1sec to N mins) i2c devices stops working. (i2c reset doesn't solve)

I've been using Git since 2014. So why do I STILL cringe whenever I have to revert commits or do a hard reset back to HEAD? What's going to disappear? What will remain? Will my entire Git history be vaporized? It's a total game of Russian Roulette to me. So, without the certainty level I want, I just do what feels safer...I grab the versions of the files I think are what I need and stick them back into my repo, then git status and commit the correct changes back in.

When you use Git for the first time and your project from 29 commit jump to 62 for continous error with Pull Request.

Of this new 33 commit, only 3 are REAL commit.

Four hour for reset and fix all The master branch.

I feel really stressed about everything I want to learn. Everytime I hear someone talk about some new framework or I see people here discuss languages or stuff I don't know anything about, I want to learn it. Right now the list of things I feel I need to learn is so fucking big that I've no idea where to start. Also, I need to focus on my upcoming exams, so I've absolutely no time to learn or do anything. Backend, front-end, iOS, Android, desktop, OS development, everything. So much to learn, so little time.

Sometimes your day is going really nice, and you just had a nice cup of tea with the milk from the best cow on the farm. You're coding happy, and you will take a walk after that. Then, suddenly, you type `git checkout .` rather than `git reset HEAD .` and your life is miserable now.

if you're new to git, becareful not to do something like git reset --hard

it works similar to
git checkout --
rm -rf.

and deletes your files that haven't been checked in

Wtf, bitbucket allows you to sign in using Google, but when you have to use it from the git cli it asks you for a password. For this you have to reset password and then proceed why give such an option when it is not feasible

temp commits are generally more useful than git stash.

instead of stashing, do a commit with a message like "THIS IS NOT A COMMIT, DON'T INCLUDE THIS". with some discipline you can then go back to your branch, `git reset --soft HEAD~1` and voila, it's similar to a `git stash pop`.

but it's better because you can do this in multiple branches at the same time and there's no fear of accidentally dropping some stashed commit.

Are any of you guys doing mobile game development? I recently started looking into this and decided I want to learn. What frameworks are good for making online multiplayer 2D and 3D games?

If anyone of you have played hide.io, that is the type of game I'd love to make. I remember a couple of years ago LibGDX was the shit, but now I couldn't find it mentioned in any recent articles.

In every single group project at my university, there is always that one guy that doesn't do shit:

Last year, we were a group of four students developing a website. One guy had never seen HTML before and was just filling the website with lorem ipsum and break-tags. One student didn't work a lot on the project, but developed a few bugs. The last guy, did not even spend 1 second working on the project.

A few days remaining before the projects deadline, and all we had left was to write a report on how we did acceptance testing. I was sure he would not get the same grade as the rest of us since I emailed the course coordinator, saying that this guy hadn't been contributing with shit.

However, just before the deadline, this guy starts making massive amounts of commits to the repo were he changed like one single character in our report, or just edited single words. The course coordinator probably just checked to see that everyone had committed to the repo, because everyone got the same grades!

Anyone else out there feel like Git is like Charlie Brown’s “stupid kite-eating tree” that just lies in wait at code deploy time to ruin you? I can never get it right. Either I’m doing some edits and realize I’m on the wrong branch or the master is inexplicably ahead of local (or vice versa) and even though I can see in the git log where things went wrong, it’s like crossing a freeway blindfolded and hoping my git fetch or reset or merge doesn’t blow everything to hell. WHYYYY IS THIS SO DAMN HARD?!

I hate Intellij Idea but it's best option available to develop in Scala. Improvements in VSCode/Metals is my last hope.

The (few) things I NEED from Intellij:
* Very good autocompletion
* Refactoring tools (renaming, auto imports)
* Search tools (find usages, sub/super-types)

The (many) things I hate of Intellij:

* Layout with panel sizes doesn't behave properly and it scales instead of remaining fixed.

* Tedious 2-hands shortcuts makes the right hand to move a lot from the mouse

* Delays and lag in the UI, freezes on garbage collection

* High memory consumption, high CPU usage and generally slow and cumbersome

* The delay in the UI between commands is so that it's accidentally possible to introduce typos

* Can't move tabs around and organize them as I like

* Ugly font rendering and missing typography settings

* Multi-caret implementation as a different editing mode is annoying because requires frequent switching

* Unnatural code folding regions, why method arguments are not folded with the method?

* Unhelpful support forum, sometimes dismissive answers

* Highlighting of current word under the caret doesn't work

* Very slow editor, can't keep spacebar pressed to move text or it hangs!

* Several settings reset at every update. Like the auto fetch of git

* New features are added and enabled by default which is very invasive

* Some of the features mentioned above are really annoying and it's not possible/not trivial to disable them

* It uses its own compile and several times it highlights false positives

So I apparently forgot to encrypt some parameters when sending error reports from our app to the server.
Which means the server tried to decrypt them but couldn´t and just threw an error...

No error logs for the app this week I guess. Yay!

I have been spending several weeks having Java version problems in a project I'm working on with other people. Could someone explain to me why the fuck Java JDK would jump from version 1.80 to 9?

fucking muscle memory added a '^' to "git reset --hard head".

at least it gets faster when you have to write it a second time, but I lost about 20 files

So I a using the ssh installed with git on Windows.
I am trying to forward a port on my internal network server which is also my ssh server. I have exposed my network server on a forwarded port on my router. When I try to forward using this command I get a connection reset on my web service on my server.

ssh -nNT -p <port on router> -L 8000:192.168.0.22:8000 <sshuser@router>

I can log into ssh normally. So I am really confused. the 192.x.x.x address is the internal ip of the server. On a browser I try to connect to the 127.0.0.1:8000. It says the connection is reset. I assume it is being refused. So it tries to connect to something, but it fails.

I can connect to the web server from within the internal network via 192.168.0.22:8000. Really confused as to what is failing here.

hey peeps, 2 questions:

1. do you know about some kind of firewall/antivirus for pc that can just allow the user to accept/block an internet request , like no root firewall does for android.

I have been using that simple, beautiful piece of open source for last 2ish years. The way it sends a notification when an app tries to make an internet request(even in the background!) has helped me detect and remove so many viruses.

2. i am thinking of doing a factory reset on my windows. My laptop came loaded with win10 and office , and i don't have the keys for it( it shows a special partition having some backup of window i guess?). So i had a couple of thoughts:
- will my office get removed?[i don't want this]

- I created several other partitions( d,e,f,p) would they go back as a single C drive?[doesn't effect me as long as i can create them again]

- the languages and modules i installed via cmd(java/python/ruby/pip modules/git/etc), would they also get removed? [i really want that]

- i am probably thinking this won't happen, but is their a possibility that the recovery partition that my windows came with, would also get removed[ i don't want that]
