When you live in a 3rd world country, get a relatively expensive 16mbps connection (that's still very unreliable), and try to clone WebKit… why the hell is it so large even with `--depth 1` and `--single-branch`? Why doesn't `git clone` support resuming/incremental cloning? Is this even 2018?

#fuckapple for holding back the open-web. Most folk don't know that Chrome on iOS is just Safari with a skin; neither Google or Apple want you to know that.

If you hate web-apps on iOS, that is Apple's intentional doing. Apple cannot allow a bug-free and modern browser to run on their iOS devices, else they lose their 30% tax + dev fees cut. There are literally so many crippling bugs in iOS Safari that it HAS to be intentional.

There are email exchanges between Phil Shaffer and Steve Jobs from years past, where Phil didn't believe Apple could continue to gouge users 30%. He argued the open-web would make native apps largely redundant, and so to stay competitive, they'd need to drop the store fees to something reasonable. I suppose Steve Jobs saw a different solution -- just impede browser development.

As someone who develops free and open-source apps, I believe I am doing the world a favour by not supporting a native iOS app. When users complain about missing features in the web-app version, I tell them to take it up with Apple or buy an Android. Guess what? They sometimes actually do just that.

Join me if you have the balls. Tell Apple to FUCK OFF the only way they understand -- threaten their bottom line. At the very least, you'll never need to touch XCode again if you do. If time is money, that alone will make you wealthy.

Fuck safari literally nothing does what it's supposed to do, I have a `document.getElementById('x').innerText = "hello there"` but it sets a totally different element to that text, this is apparently because of display: none although JS should NOT look at css wtf.

There's a whole bunch of these issues but I won't rant about them until I've solved them so I can fully explore the depth of stupidity in safari. If you work for apple and developed WebCore or WebKit, I'm sorry but I hate you and you would be better off shipping with lynx.

Soon, Firefox will be the only viable browser. Google cracks down on adblockers with manifest v3, and all Chromium-based browsers are soon to follow, involuntarily so. Safari won't, but you can't make a Safari extension as easily.
Mozilla stated Firefox won't support manifest v3. This means adblockers will remain functional.

There is a fourth player though — Nyxt. They use WebKit, but they support Chromium-like extensions. Nyxt is built in Lisp and C. But Nyxt is an unorthodox browser to say the least.

Man... NW.js (node-webkit) apps are a piece of garbage on Ubuntu. After wake from sleep every app is using 100% CPU or hangs. Spotify, Slack, Postman, Jetbrains Toolbox.

Waiting for Apple to deprecate their iOS Safari and finally let people install real alternative browsers on their iPhones. Suckfari does not support aspect-ratio either, coincidentally spend hours to find that, now struggling with 100vh and -webkit-fill-available.
Microsoft at least left the choice to install something else besides Internet Explorer before they finally pulled the plug and provided Chromium Edge. Safari isn't the new Internet Explorer, it's worse.

So let's say you spent over a day trying to clone WebKit using git but it failed every single time. Because the WebKit repo is HUGE (at least 7GB of worthless bloated refs), your connection is unstable, and git doesn't resume.

Then you discover you can solve the issue by simply cloning it via SVN in your cmake script.

Then you hit build, and forget that you had `-j 8` set in your IDE settings.

Then your computer freezes when it tries to compile 8 of WebKit's "UnifiedSourceXXX.cpp" files at a time, and all your 16GB of RAM get obliterated.

What the fuck, universe?

I don't know what happened there but if you thought the chrome-firefox-ie-egde gaps back in the days were sick - let me tell you.. email clients are made by the devil himself. All of them. All of them? Yup. Because he made some of them being owned by apple, working beatuiful and no weird stuff.
But on the same end he made some of them owned by microsoft and their office Studios. They use the word engine to render html emails. Read this again. Read it without starting to cry in agony.
But thats not enough. Let's make some of them use an ie-engine and the mac os variants going to use some webkit based renderer. This way there will be no valid ruleset to make it look good on all of them, isn't this great??

Just reported a minor tracking bug I found on WebKit to the WebKit bugzilla, and I have a few thoughts:

1. Apple product security can be kind of vague sometimes - they generally don't comment on bugs as they're fixing them, from the looks of it, and I'm not sure why that is policy.

2. Tracking bugs *are* security bugs in WebKit, which is quite neat in a way. What amazes me is how Firefox has had a way to detect private browsing for years that they are still working on addressing (indexedDB doesn't work in private browsing), and chrome occasionally has a thing or two that works, with Safari, Apple consistently plays whack-a-mole with these bugs - news sites that attempt to detect private browsing generally have a more difficult time with Safari/WebKit than with other browsers.

I guess a part of that could be bragging rights - since tracking bugs (and private browsing detection bugs, I think) count as security bugs, people like yours truly are more incentivised to report them to Apple because then you get to say "I found a security bug", and internal prioritisation is also higher for them.

When - webkit-background-clip does not work with any kind of transition or animation and you're forced to make duplicate div on top of original without it and opacity:0. Just because designer want's quick fade transition.

Google enslaved me to conduct their experiments on me, and now when I use a -webkit prefixed css property, I feel excruciating pain. They made me have intercourses with horses and bite my wife to death.

Finally an error I can understand with ease. Up until now, I’ve been getting these weird arbitrary errors that make no sense to me.

I tried to wake my MacBook and the thing hung. I have it some time, and it restarted, restored all windows, and let me know it was a “Sleep Wake Failure”.

Honestly I don’t mind getting an error occasionally. But when the error says “UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP” while I’m gaming on Windows, it annoys me.

Also having WebKit crash the webpage on me without telling me what happened also gets me mad.

There's a major bug on an SPA I developed for a client, but I can't reproduce it because I don't have a recent iPhone or iPad (the only ones I have a way too old and either way I can't debug them without a mac) and I can't reproduce the bug on my android.

To overcome this in the past I installed a hackintosh on my pc and used it's iphone emulator, but I fucked it up and had to reinstall all my OSs but was too lazy to reinstall macos. Now I don't remember how to install it anymore, idk where I downloaded the fucking mojave virtual box image and the macos bootable usb stick I have just doesn't work anymore (probably some missing kext or whatever).

I really do not know what I'm gonna do. There's this ios-webkit-debug-proxy thing that might help me, but it just looks like it's a hassle to install and since I don't know what I'm doing the chances of it working are pretty slim. I might try that but I'm fairly confident it won't work. And even if it does, I still can't install chrome on the iphone I own because it's too old and my dad probably won't let me upgrade it to a new version.

been exploring the options for cross platform desktop app, and i found :
java : both awt and swing look ugly, i really like OOP of java, and the way projects are organized is easy to scale, but i need to deploy the jdk, and the speed on gui apps isn't that great
C# : (.net/ mono, i can't grasp F# and vb is stupid) looks native on windows, not so much alien on both linux/mac, and being a java cousin is a pro, i found the Eto library for mono even looks more native on *ix than winforms
wxwidgets: for C/C++ so far this looks like the best option for total native feel and performance, but man i fucking hate C code, and this looks a lot like C code, even with proper native Cpp support, maybe i should dive deeper in it
GTK+ : did any one mention C code ? because this mother fucker is plain C with macros all over the place, it made me realize why wx is promoted as Cpp friendly, i doubt I'll use this
tcl/tk : even tho ive never wrote a single line of tcl in my life, the tk lib is the default ui for both python and ruby on all supported platforms,
and i really love ruby, and Python is Usually a joy to work with
Qt : this by far looks like the best option, proper OOP in C++, bindings for python (ruby binds are outdated), almost native look and feel on supported platforms, and even has a gui builder in xml or json/js (qml) however i bet I'll use such a thing, the building tho depends on an external preprocessor "moc" and some wicked macros, also makes working with templates a fucking mess, and the heavy dependence on QObject inheritance makes integrating external libraries a bit more tiring, the signal slot system makes more sense in python than in C++, since it makes me confused about the flow of the code
lazarus: is a freepascal implementation that looks and feels like delphi, not so much for native look and feel, but good performance and easy language to handle
electron : this fat mofo is fat, it's the slowest of all options, if i want an html app, I'll just compile a stripped down webkit and deploy that

Something interesting i learned today about the html5 video tag is that even if preload is set it's up to the player the render engine is using to fetch the index of the file first as with mp4 this is usually at the end of the file.

This means that for Blink and Gecko most likely fetch this first themselves. But for webkit it opens in quicktime on mobile devices which you cannot pass parameters to and flat out waits for the entire stream to start playing.
