My biggest dev blunder. I haven't told a single soul about this, until now.
So, I was working as a full stack dev at a small consulting company. By this time I had about 3 years of experience and started to get pretty comfortable with my tools and the systems I worked with.
I was the person in charge of a system dealing with interactions between people in different roles. Some of this data could be sensitive in nature and users had a legal right to have data permanently removed from our system. In this case it meant remoting into the production database server and manually issuing DELETE statements against the db. Ugh.
As soon as my brain finishes processing the request to venture into that binary minefield and perform rocket surgery on that cursed database my sympathetic nervous system goes into high alert, palms sweaty. Mom's spaghetti.
Alright. Let's do this the safe way. I write the statements needed and do a test run on my machine. Works like a charm 😎
Time to get this over with. I remote into the server. I paste the code into Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. I read through the code again and again and again. It's solid. I hit run.
Wait. I ran it?
With the IDs from my local run?
I stare at the confirmation message: "Nice job dude, you just deleted some stuff. Cool. See ya. - Your old pal SQL Server".
What did I just delete? What ramifications will this have? Am I sweating? My life is over. Fuck! Think, think, think.
You're a professional. Handle it like one, goddammit.
I think about doing a rollback but the server dudes are even more incompetent than me and we'd lose all the transactions that occurred after my little slip. No, that won't fly.
I do the only sensible thing: I run the statements again with the correct IDs, disconnect my remote session, and BOTTLE THAT SHIT UP FOREVER.
I tell no one. The next few days I await some kind of bug report or maybe a SWAT team. Days pass. Nothing. My anxiety slowly dissipates. That fateful day fades into oblivion and I feel confident my secret will die with me. Cool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯13
I have never been fucked more in my life. A month ago I finished a 3 month internship for my last year of my education. And next to the internship I only have my thesis to defend and voila, I got my diploma! The internship itself went awesome, met some very interesting people, had a ton of fun working there and they were really happy about me.
But then it started, about 2 weeks after my internship started I got an email that my mentor (from school itself) had changed. It changed to a guy who's known for his insane way of teaching and being very unprofessional. Sometimes when I had a class on another level a bit further in the hall, we could hear him screaming while he was "teaching". He's really insane and should in no way be teaching to students. On top of that he has very little knowledge about CS, since he "teaches" maths.
So after I got the news I knew I was fucked. This guy is really hard to communicate with. And I'd never be able to have a decent, professional conversation with him.
So after I did everything I knew I was supposed to do, I tried to contact him on what else he'd need from me. His emails were crazy, unprofessional, and in no condition of being able to read and understand. So I started to get really annoyed but I didn't make this clear towards him. I even complained to another person of my school in a very polite way by saying that our communication wasn't going so well, I got no answer from that person and she even forwarded my complaint to him without asking for my permission and answering me.
So I kept doing what he kinda asked for, but had no idea if I was doing it wrong or right since I almost never got an answer from him, or the answer was not even an answer to my questions in the first place.
Today I had my presentation of the internship in front of him. It's the first time I see him since this school year. I give my presentation being quite happy of what I did at the company. When I was finished he starts bashing me into oblivion with ignorant questions, comments and very deconstructive negative feedback. Me not knowing what the fuck is happening and getting really angry inside standing there with nothing to say. I answered all of his questions as good as I could. But he was tearing me down so fucking hard. Because I only had half an hour I sticked with the most important stuff about my internship, didn't go to deep into all of it because he's not a fucking it'er anyway, and he asked for it specifically not to go deep into the project. But now he's saying I'm not giving enough information?! (He wanted to know what IDE I used?!?! What the fuck has that to do with anything)
So although I had a wonderful internship and I completed my project far better than the company had expected, my presentation went awful. I'm thinking that the guy was predetermined in failing me. How can I do a good job if he himself is not give a fuck about me. So now he's probably failing me for something he has no clue of what I did, and it's not even my fault.
I have no idea what I should be doing now. I start working in the second week of February but I probably won't get my bachelors degree until September now because of this fucker. I'm even thinking on taking legal actions. This guy just fucked my self confidence so hard. I'm fucking depressed right now15
A CMS raping WordPress so hard up the ass till there is no tomorrow. I hate that bastardized piece of fuck. “Hey I want you to fix my page and its wordpress. I pay 20 bucks.“ Well fuck you too sir. Wordpress is no cms you wanna be coders. Get back to your fucking photoshop and design something original! Every fucking wp page looks the same. Every “nice feature“ is some kind of monkeypatched workarround. No problem i set preview pictures for every post just to enable some weird slider to function.
I also love those buttfucked files with just a “require foo“ which also just requires “bar“. Drop that fuck. Implement autoloading. Nobody uses php4 anymore step into the future. “easy to learn“ fuck me and fuck you untill you vomit jizz! Clusterfucked spaghetticode thats easy, easy to put another rotten load of clusterfuck on top. Also those security features. I put an empty index.php to prevent directory traversal. N I C E! Stop using wordpress as CMS, its a blog engine. Nothing great has every been written on top of wordpress and never will. I dare you to deny everything related to it and if you are one of those designer guyd, you can gargle my jizz you fucknut!
Starting 2017 i will start a counter and rape every 10th Wordpress which gets abused as cms i encounter into oblivion on their 0,99$ webhosting shit.
Fuck this I'm so mad about that crap17
Wtf y'all see shitposting and then you decide to continuously upvote it.
Look retards. Part of being a Computer Scientist, or whatever shit branch you are part in this vast field...is detecting patterns....if you see some dickwad shitposting the same shit over and over or using fucking retarded ass themes, or some jase shit then downvote the shit out of it.
Someone can make his theme to be just posting ascii penises and you retards would upvote that shit to oblivion.
Stupid ass community.
"THeN lEave" <--- i was prob here before you dickhead....go suck on cock somewhere else.
Damn y'all are fucking idiotic...this what happens when we make retards believe they can be engineers56
To that person who came here to weep about how his employees don’t want to work on weekends and how he’s gonna force them to and deleted his rant that was downvoted to oblivion:
Please re-evaluate your mindset. Today it’s just downvotes, tomorrow it’s your entire staff quitting and pressing charges.18
I never understood the appeal of Steve Jobs to other people, and had never bought an Apple product until about six years ago.
However, after buying a couple of Macbooks - including ones, circa 2012/2013, on eBay - it's very obvious that the quality has shrivelled into oblivion after his passing.
If I was to credit him with one thing, Jobs was the ultimate QA guru with long lasting products as his top priority.
Now, Apple sells glue machines and Steve Jobs would be clean slating the entire list of employees - from the top, down - if he was alive to notice how little the company seemed to care about what he had planted as the seed, many years ago.23
Asked a question on SO, realized the answer before getting any help, came back to the question just to see it was down-voted to oblivion because indeed it was very stupid.8
what is worse on stackoverflow:
1. getting downvoted to oblivion
2. having your question view'd multiple times with no response
Haven't yet been able to formulate a question that StackOverflow didn't downvote to oblivion.
I tried to follow all the rules. No chance.13
This is what being a security enthusiast does to you.
A little background : This is our team's designer who asked me to send him one of my pictures to put on my ID Card (that he is designing) for the event that I'm organizing along with my team. I have known him for about 2 years now but well, security awareness gave me trust issues because I apparently asked him to delete the picture he is finally using for my ID Card after he is done with the work. He must be thinking I'm crazy.
P.s. I still don't know if he actually deleted it or not but let's just give him the benefit of doubt and try to live in oblivion.19
See, static typing? that shit is for putos. You think you're so cool with your advanced intellisense being able to tell you "yo....dat shit ain't the type you think it is" or your compiler telling you "yo dumbass, you fucked this parameter up in here, you are doing <x> when in reality you should be doing #@$@#$@!<X at line !@#@#$#>"
pfffft static typing. Such a pansy ass thing to worry about.
Picture us, working outside of the safety net of static typing, as jungle explorers, walking slowly, with a machete in hand and our other hand clutched tightly at our hip pistol, not knowing what to shoot at, but eagerly prepared for when shit fucks up because whatever the fuck you did was not properly safeguarded by a compiler to tell you that you fucked up, even if the compiler message is unintelligible (looking at you C and C++)
We is men here, we is brave retarded adventurers.
As our sanity blips into oblivion and we look at our code that has no sort of type checking expecting our shitty intellisense extensions to protect us....
Edit: if you can't understand the sarcasm in here and the plea for sanity then you are obviously a retard and have no place in the world of development21
StackOverflow in a nutshell
This gets me so angry; Two identical answers, one downvoted into oblivion and the other one upvoted like it is a holy grail.6
Yepp.. The older you get, the faster the time flies by. Remember how long days used to be when you were 10? How much you used to do then? And now? You barely skim through your emails and it's already lunch time.. And soon after that it's already time to go home, go to sleep. And the next day is the same. Round robin, round robin... And when you think that the pooft-you're-gone moment is approaching faster and faster every year, you wonder what are you leaving behind, to remember you by.. A few dev projects that will drown to oblivion a few years after you're out, a few modules in other projects that will live longer but your code lines will soon be overwritten and forgotten in git's history, where noone ever scrolls to. Your own projects you have never released. Your fam who will remember you until their grandchildren - after that older generations are forgotten...
What is it that will keep people saying your name after you're gone? What significant have you given to the life?23
I was browsing through a local development career forum and someone asked if it's worth it to accept a job that has a 3-year bond. The salary is only slightly higher than my starting salary when I was a junior several years ago, barely covers inflation, there's no promise of yearly increase, and they have to pay a year's worth of their salary if they decide to quit before the bond is over. Sounds like a trap to me especially because of how crazy employers are these days.
Imagine a dumbass employer demanding you commute to work every day in the middle of the pandemic "just because" with zero option to work from home. Not to mention how toxic the workplace can be. Burnout, anxiety, depression, and all that are more common these days. Imagine wanting to quit for any of those reasons but nope, "Stay here for three years. We made sure you earn an amount that makes it impossible for you to even save up to pay for that bond in case you're desperate enough to leave."
Most people said it's not worth it and a lot can happen in three years. One guy has the opposite opinion which is fine, you do you, brother. What caught my attention was how he talked about his "success story" of making this bond work for him. He said after the 3-year bond was over, he doubled his salary by jumping to another company. His starting salary was only slightly above minimum wage and the amount he achieved after three years was just like $100 dollars higher than the OP's post so even though it was a decent increase, it was far below the standard to begin with. He literally just jumped to the standard after three years.
Then a boomer comes in and told his tale about how back in his days, he earned below minimum wage and preached about how people should just be thankful for having a job. It was downvoted to oblivion with comments mocking him like "I suffered and was exploited and so should you."
The salary gap between people who work in the same field, granted that it is a wide field, is so weird that it's like people live in alternate realities. Yes, I'm aware that life is unfair, gaps exist, people suck, blah blah. Shut the fuck up about how this isn't brand new information. The annoying thing is despite how many people in forums are transparent about how much they are paid so others know how much they are being exploited, you still see people hindering that process. If you have no other options, go for it. It's always nice to make a living but if you have several options, why this?
I know they have reasons for having bonds but it's like a marriage proposal from a meth head.10
About to post my first question on SO.
Wish me luck.
How should I word a question without getting downvoted into Oblivion.
Windows not powering off when I press the shutdown button.
Mandatory long rant warning
Oh my fucking god, how many times have I lost my shit because of this fucking bullshit.
When I press the shutdown button, I want you to shut the fuck down you sorry excuse for an operating system.
Me and my friends want to hang out together, so I shut down my PC and walk over to their house, expecting an intense session of doing programming stuff and debating linux distros. Whatever the fuck we do when we get together.
I get to their house and pull out my laptop,, only its hot as fuck. And then I see it: the battery indicator is red. "What the balls?" I think to myself. I open the lid, and guess what?
WINDOWS DIDN'T FUCKING SHUT DOWN, AND IT STAYED ON THE POWERING OFF SCREEN ALL THIS FUCKING TIME. WHAT THE FUCK?
Now, my laptop has a bomb ass battery, so I didn't even bring a charger with me, and now I'm fucking stuck at a programming session with friends without a computer. FUCKING BULLSHIT.
If this was a one time thing, I wouldn't have cared so much, but this happened countless fucking times. Too many.
I would have deleted this cum socket of an operating system months ago if it weren't for the Windows exclusive software I need for school, and now that Steam supports games for linux, Windows has even less of an excuse to stay on my fucking laptop.
Windows is supposed be fucking simple, but linux takes it by a goddamn long shot. When I type "shutdown now" or "poweroff", linux shuts the fuck down, no questions asked. And if I ever need root permissions, I just type "sudo" instead of restarting the fucking program and requesting admin privileges.
Most of the software I use is compatible with both MacOS and Windows, and I already have Ubuntu installed on my laptop, so what do you guys think, should I butcher Windows off of my SSD and give MacOS a try?
Also, what is this magic? Ranting actually calmed me the fuck down... I need to start ranting more.
FUCK MICROSOFT AND FUCK WINDOWS, I WISH I COULD BURN TO FUCKING OBLIVION6
After months of googling and troubleshooting my router settings trying to figure out why my port forwarding settings are not working only to realize that I'M BEING CGNATTED TO OBLIVION BY MY FUCKING ISP WITHOUT A FUCKING NOTICE!
Why I don't use Stack Overflow 99% of the time:
Me: I'm not a ruby developer, but I have to write a small script in ruby. I ran into a problem where i'm getting behavior I don't expect. I have a method which expects an array, and when multiple items are passed into it from the command line parser, behaves appropriately, but when only one command line argument is passed, the method breaks because it was passed a single element, not an array of one element. Here's my code, how do I get my desired behavior?
Most highly voted answer: your problem is your passing it a single element and not an array
Question downvoted into oblivion. As if i'm a pleb for not immediately having a perfect grasp of dynamic typing because when I have the choice I stick with strong nominative typing.8
Why does your kind have to create multiple files, classes, and variables to do one simple task? It makes no fucking sense. Your code was literally written to confuse anyone that has to work on it. Every fucking time I see this shit, my head explodes. It makes no sense. What the fuck is this? What other form of retardation do you have?
Then you have the essay writing galore of code and the never-ending typos that change every goddamn file as if it's not hard enough to trace where the random crap jumps into.
Complimentary? Complomentory? Complmntary? Carrier, carrie, carrer? Fuck you, you fucking piece of shit. Not only do you import entire files and each script runs random methods and variables you can't possibly trace, you- you fuck. I can't even grep the fuck out of this crap. Admit it, you did this for job securiy because you belong in a goddamn asylum, you sick demented fuckhole. The time you spent abstracting shit into oblivion could have been used fixing typos or writing consistent variables or consistent fucking I don't fucking know anymore. I hate this shit.8
We need an open-source alternative to stack overflow. They have fucking monopolizing pieces of ratshit admins there and lame ass bots.
I HAD A FUCKING 450 REP :/ and now i have "reached my question limit"
I mean its okay of you want to keep stackoverflow clean , but straight out rejecting the new queries should be against your god damn principles, if those mofos have any!
If it is so easy to downvote and delete a question for the mods, why can't they create a trash site called dump.stackoverflow.com ? whenever a question is not following their stupid guidelines , downvote it to oblivion. After a certain limit, that question goes to dump space where it will be automatically removed after 30 days. Atleast give us 30 fucking days to gather attention of audience !
And how does a question defines someone's character that you downright ban the person from asking new questions? Is there a phd that we should be doing in our mother's womb to get qualified as legitimate question author?
"No questions are stupid" is what we usually hear in our school/college life. And that's a stretch, i agree. Some questions are definitely stupid. But "Your questions are so stupid we are removing you from the site" is the worst possible way to deal with a question asker.
Now, can anyone tell me that if am passing a parcelable list of objects in an intent before starting a new activity, how can i retrieve it in the new activity without getting any kotlin warnings?
The compiler is saying that the data coming via intent is that of list<Type!> aka list of platform type, so how to deal with this warning?16
It's amusing how every time something doesn't work with Linux somebody spent a bunch of time customising their OS into oblivion (because well, the whole point of using Linux is the ability to have it your way, d'oh), and it's never their fault for changing everything or using some distro with 0.05% market share, it's the company's fault not providing bulletproof support for their exact setup and not testing everything they put out on every combination of kernel & system software.6
Customer: URGENT, we are not receiving any email. (that's actually a really urgent issue)
Turns out that customer had an invalid base64 embedded image in is signature which was causing our system to crash.
Made invalid images move to oblivion and told the customer the issue was solved :D4
Me: *suggests an architectural input to something that would have taken care of a lot of shit in our project*
Lead Dev: *doesn't completely try to understand what I suggested* I don't know if this would work, it seems a "bit weird"(really?). I think we need to rethink our current architecture. *Moves on to redesign everything from the base up and asks us to adopt so we go on and delete a lot of the existing code and basically rewrite everything*
- 10 days later
Lead Dev: *sees the same old issues with using the new architecture and suggests the same approach that I had suggested earlier, only this time he came up with it and it's a brand new idea*
Me: WTF! *Screams into oblivion*2
What is it about robot collected data that makes researchers so anal? Like, dude, it's not even personal data. It's literally robot's joint motor recordings. It's not nuclear data, so why the fuck do you protect it like your life and your country depend on it?
I hope you get fisted by that data every night and how it will end up in oblivion sooner because you didn't publish it. You asshole.8
So, as you may be aware, I work as solo dev for small company. There is easly enough work for team, but I digress..
So, they wanted to stay updated whats progress on some projects. We use slack. I use git. I set up account for them so they can come into my git and controll if issues are solved, etc. I wont get started about any dev ever beeing judged by how much code is outputted, beyond scope of this.
So they started bitching about that git is too technical and too complicated and shit. They made bizzare bullshit google excel (not even in polish) and stupidass form to "audit issues". Hmm.. wtf. I just didnt use it becouse it was slowing me down and was just frustrating, how one can replace git + issue tracker with fucking spreadsheet?!
Okay, so having that aside, I complained about that so they were like "okay, so you want to use git and we want to be notified. whats your solution" me "oh, you want to stay notified, thats easy, I can plug my git into slack"
Now our slack is spammed to oblivion with git notifications.
Now they are annoyed that they are too notified. (Yes I consulted with them what will be plugged into slack)
In the next three months, if I said jackshit about data science personal projects, you have my permission to backhand me into oblivion.
Need to stay on my current track...7
Fuck Salesforce to oblivion and back. I hope all it's buildings, servers and backups fucking burn down. Never has there been anything more frustrating, confusing, over-fucking-complicated and over-fucking-glorified in all history.8
PISS ON YOUR PANTS BOSS
PISS ON WORDPRESS TOO
GO EAT A TUPLE OF ASS SINGING SPOILED FOODS YOU SPOILED LITTLE KID
GO BANANAS AND EXILE YOURSELF TO OBLIVION3
Firstly, my main wish is to work in the office. I don't like remote stuff and all that. I would like to have a job where you have to go every day except weekend at a certain time and be there for example 7 hours. I would love to have a good who will tell me what to do, I like to listen to people. I would also want to have a secretary, Im not organized. I would like to do either .NET development, Web Development or 3D modeling. If im working .NET, I would like to work in Microsoft. If Im working Web, I would like to work anywhere, with an office, of course. I don't know, I just love the feeling offices give me and the atmosphere in them. And if im working 3D modeling, I would like to work in Bethesda. Oblivion played a big role in my childhood. I don't care for salary, it doesn't have to be anything big, just enough for bills and my children (which I hope ill have).
There, dream of a 15 yo4
the latest recruitard.
so having been unemployed for 14 months, this recruiter shit is infuriating. i think they are the reason for my unemployment.
i just spoke to the biggest idiot ever, she worked for a temp agency called manpower, attempted to solicit a job for the u of a. she was "new and getting used to the technologies in the market" that was her excuse for asking me if java and js were different languages, i mean if you cant understand simple stuff like this, gtfo the industry all you are doing is hurting hard working ppl like me. i cant even get adaquate representation because there is no qualified ppl in charge of delivering me to hiring managers, and you can forget about presenting yourself c level execs dont talk to us plebs we are here for one thing to make them money and get screwed, the last 6 out of 10 jobs i have actually gotten all left me with debit they owed and dissappeared into oblivion.2
I don't know how much of this can be considered data loss but one one of my uni classmates frustrated by some hellish tasks (cleaning some old code files probably) decided that everything in that particular directory won't be of any further need, so she procede to rm -rf it.. only to discover that the terminal opened in that dir was another one and her current one (the one she bashed that unforgiving rm) was in fact a standard freshly opened term where any term would open.. in the user's (only user) home dir... such a face she had when all her codes, homeworks, projects and everything went to oblivion 😂😂 jokes aside it was a good thing that the semester was almost finished, all hws submited and no important data was there as she dual booted with ubuntu and some windows, but funny thing how such a honest mistake can ruin not only your day, but maybe your entire semester1
I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.
Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.
New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.
But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.
Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :34
There are some who view software as a social construct (like Pieter Hientjes), and I think it's a valuable perspective. So if we know about the intrinsic brokenness of software, can we deduce sth about the brokenness of human interactions? Did social API's evolve to similar clusterfucks of dead entropy we have to shovel in our brains to get along?
I think the answer is an emphatic yes. And you know what's even making it worse? Software. Y'know there are all these whining about the millenials, and I too have had my experiences with stuff of that category. Like back when we searched a new roommate for our flat, we needed three rounds because people who had said yes suddenly reconsidered. Similarly now when we tried to sell our couch: people tried to push the price. Said they were interested, never showed up at the appointed time. It's like they have been spoiled by Amazon: expecting to buy with one click, for the cheapest price and send back if they don't like. And that is not a generation thing. Those old blokes ranting on the young are just as bad. They are just as lost in antisocial media as anybody else. It's a general erosion of not sticking to civility and courtesy, to the yes or no once said, coz everything is now as flexible and fluid as the digital projections of ourselves transmitted round the globe, changing in realtime.
I fucking hate it. - I'm out like this stupid Tom Cruise character in Oblivion.6
Stackoverflow members should relax.
I just added an answer with a question at the end. Downvoted to the oblivion because "you should not answer with a question".
My answer, posted as a comment to the question, was the right answer.
How am I supposed to help if I have not enough points to comment instead of answering?5
i just released my first open source project with effort to make a comprehensible documentation for others to use as well as repetitive refactoring to not embarrass myself.
i am equally excited and knowing no one will care about that.
it is based on my effort to make my companies workflow more effective, knowing well this is just a temporary solution in advance to a professional developed system as opposed to having no system at all. so all of this work will fade into oblivion eventually.
i felt this has been too much work just to be forgotten someday so i cling to my naive hope someone might benefit from that and maybe i get one or three internet points.
in case someone is interested in a free quality management software for document control and access with no real state of art, you might find it interesting to visit my qualitymanagement repo4
I'll never forget to put a .
before the destination followed by 2 /../ while using `mv`
unless I want to sent it into oblivion.
Today I witnessed a presentation of a full-stack web project where 90% of the code was either taken off of online tutorials, or created by the tutor and even though the code was full of over-explaining comments, the Frankenstein of this monster was not able to explain any of the code in the project. I do not even understand why this person enrolled in this course to begin with. I genuinely feel bad for the guy, but he had it coming. At least try to put in some work into the project if your course grade depends on it.1
I can make a prediction the same dirty ass bastards that screwed me over the last time this happened will do so again because god forbid I live on like I have so many times before like an ordinary man with some moral improvement no no
That messes with their circular walk into oblivion without life2
