I applied to three totally exciting jobs tonight. (!!!)
I feel so giddy ;3
Also: I had no idea salaries were so much higher than what I've been earning. I feel so horribly used and abused and undervalued. Toxic environment, indeed!
I will be so so so glad to leave it all behind. (And finally move!)

Once upon a time in Devland, there were two best friends @Alice and @Michelle and they worked together at The DevCo company as developers.
After a tough day handling an @-ANGRY-CLIENT-, they thought that they had to go and @RantSomewhere and so they went to a café. At the café, they ranted about some stupid clients, and @theItalianGuy at the third floor of their office building who never picked up calls, and @thatJavaGuy from the second floor who, they thought, was @notarealDev, and the usual stuff about their work. Somewhere in between, @Alice thought it would be @funvengeance to @hack @theNSA; “@karma is coming to get them”, said @Michelle.
To do this, they knew they’d have to take help from none other than @Gandalf who lived in a nearby @cave. So, the next day, taking a leave from work, @Alice and @Michelle embarked on journey to meet @Gandalf. After about an hour’s drive, they reached @Gandalf’s @cave. @Michelle went ahead to knock on @Gandalf’s rusty cave door. Being a lazy @necromancer, he magically opened his door 2 minutes later. “Who is't dares to disturb me in mine own catch but a wink?” shouted a voice from the back; “We’re two developers from DevCo and we need your help in our mission to @hack @theNSA”, shouted @Michelle. After a few seconds, he replied, ”Hmm… N'rmally I wouldst sendeth thee to mine own cousin @Hagrid, but in thy case, I sayeth thee shouldst visiteth the detective who is't goeth by the nameth @S-Holmes”. @Alice replied back, “Thank you, Sir @Gandalf, we’ll get help from this @S-Holmes, I’ve heard that he’s an @exceptionalGuy”; “Mine own pleasure, Farewell!” said @Gandalf, and the door closed shut.
So, @Alice and @Michelle went back to their car, and that time @Alice raised a question, “How are we gonna find this @S-Holmes? We don’t have a phone number or anything so we could contact this guy.”
“We should call @thatJavaGuy from work, I’ve heard he is a man of resources, he must know how to contact @S-Holmes”, said @Michelle.
And it was true, after a call with @thatJavaGuy, they were able to obtain @S-Holmes’s phone number.
“Howdy, this is @S-Holmes, what can I diddily ding dong do you for?”
“Hi, I’m @Alice, I’m from DevCo and I was hoping that I could get your help in our mission.”
“What kind of mission?”, asked @S-Holmes.
“We want to @hack @theNSA.”, replied @Alice.
“Okay… I think I might be able to hel-diddly-elp you! There’s an old and abandoned laberino noodly-near @stacked Street. It was made in @1989 and since then, it houses a magical computeroo that can hel-diddly-elp you in your mission. So, you just have to connect the computeroo to the Internet and you can diddily ding dong do your programmeroo thing and then you'll have access to the the noodly-nsa diddily ding dong database!”, answered @S-Holmes.
S-Holmes continued, “But I shall warn you, there's a riddly-rumorino that the laberino was abandoned because of an @electric-ghost that lurks there, but I bel-diddly-elieve it is just a computeroo program that was diddily ding dong designed to try to @stop hackers from accessing the top secret stuff!".
“Okay, thanks for your help! I bet we can handle whatever this @electric-ghost thing is, so… Goodbye!”, replied @Alice.
“Goodbye!”, said @S-Holmes and that ended their conversation.
Luckily, the @stacked Street was just a couple of miles away from them, so they reached the lab quickly.
As they got close to the lab they saw something that really surprised them…

To be continued in part two...
(Do you want a part two? :/)
My first ever story is a little special because it is kind of dev related at it has "cameos" by various devranters, as you might have noticed.
How many did you count?
More in Part Two.
Thank you for reading and please, any feedback is welcome. Did you like it?
I haven't really revised it once, it is straight out of the keyboard.
Should I drop the "@" ?
But then it would impossible to spot some of the devRanters .
Let me know.
PS
What should be the title?
1)Alice in DevLand?
2)Adventures of Alice and Friends: Hacking the NSA?
You decide..(or maybe I'll pick the second one :D)23 -

I know this might not be a rant but Im sure nobody will understand this better than my fellow ranters/devs
Four years ago (16yo) I learned about a software development company in my city and Ive been wanting to.work for them ever since, at first I couldnt because I need half college credits, after because I landed a way more comprehensive job, but now I start on monday. The thing is few people have landed a dev job there as students because of what they ask but I MADE IT.

Quite the opposite of a Rant actually. Very good day today! Had pancakes to start the day, finally got a second monitor for only 5 bucks - it is so much easier to program with live change monitoring!

yesterday my boss called me to his office.
(him) - Please close the door
(me thinking) - My God, this is gonna be serious. He never closes his doors
(him) - It's a common practice here that we buy a new laptop for new colleges. What kind of laptop do you have?
(me relieved and excited) - Well it's 4 years old shit, 8 Gb of RAM, slow
(him) - Great we'll buy you this i7, big SSD, 32 Gb of RAM + new monitor, mouse and keyboard.
I was excited as fuck.
Until he sent me what he bought. It's much worse laptop than that I have 😑 Only thing that is better is it has 16 Gb of RAM.
I guess I'll just take that RAM off it and put it in my machine (if it is DDR3, God please may it be DDR3)4 -
With much help from a friend here (an unofficially related app, so I'm unsure of username here), I successfully dual booted my laptop to Arch Linux.
Tried Debian, but must have missed something, because it tried to format my whole SSD, which isn't good since my work software only works in windows.
Going to be a change, but I'm kind of excited. To the friend who helped me, I appreciate you and how late you stayed up to help me troubleshoot ❤7 -

It's been a long ass time Devrant, but I got some great news...
I start my new job as a Junior Frontend Developer next week :)
I'm just so happy to finally become a "professional" developer, but I'm also pretty nervous to be honest. Either way, I'm glad for the opportunity and won't squander it. I've been working towards being able to seize a moment like this for two years now; I'm as ready as I'll ever be, and I want to encourage everybody still struggling to make that first step into the professional world to keep going at it--you'll make it5 -

Hoooly shit, I'm starting to love my university.

Today they offered me a Microsoft Imagine account where I'm able to get any Microsoft license I want for free for 5 years!

Win10, Office 2016, VSEnterprise or community 2017, SQL Server 2017, Azure!!!, etc!
Wohooooo!
I'm sorry to all the Linux people, I'm a Microsoft guy...26 -
I fucking fell in love. Damn oh yeah. I bought new headphones. Cheap SONY. Didnt expect any bass and i expected like no good sound. Damn was i fucking wrong. The sound is amazing. No fuck amazing. Even better. And then i found my love. PulseEffects.
The bass is even better and much much louder.
This is amazing.
I never tought that earphones can do so much bass in that small package but damn was i wrong.
Expect much fucking better code from me now.
No not because because the bass and that stuff. OK maybe it has some part in it. But main is that i dont hear even a single sound from the rest of he fucking word.
What does that mean ?
I will not be able to hear my fucking classmates and write actually decent code.
LOL wtf did i say ? Decent code ? LOOOOOOL9 -

Fuuuccckkkk! I just realised I made 120 commits over the past 100 hours.
It's a big thing for me as a developer and open source enthusiast because I finally understood how to work on open source projects with a team and also I've been able to give equal time to all my current projects.
Also, GitHub going green is a beautiful feeling xD

Hi all! I've finally published my first open source project!
I give to you, The Web Toolbox! https://thewebtoolbox.cc/
A few years ago I used to make heavy use of thetoolbox.cc, but unfortunately it went offline. I thought I'd revive the project and improve upon the previous version.
I'm going to be adding new tools soon, and I'm really looking forward to any suggestions from the community.
Hope you all find it useful :)6 -
I think I'm falling in love. With TDD.
I used to be very skeptic about it. You know, the usual reasons: it takes longer to deliver, constant "flow" interruptions, etc, etc. But ever since I've tried it I'm nothing but happy about my choice :)
I'm moving forward, I'm not making any regressions, I'm no longer afraid to make any changes in my code as I know tests will show what exactly I break,.. And most importanty, I have all use-cases with corner-cases defined and "explained" in the code... No more do I have to search in Confluence for how this exact scenario should behave. Everything is here. Everything's in the tests.
It's amazing!
Yeah, it DOES take longer to deliver so if you're hardcore Agile living by "Ship it as soon as it compiles" TDD might be too slow. But if you prefer knowing when your code is covering all the use cases w/o any errors -- TDD is the way.12 -
Ever heard of event-based programming? Nope? Well, here we are.
This is a software design pattern that revolves around controlling and defining state and behaviour. It has a temporal component (the code can rewind to a previous point in time), and is perfectly suited for writing state machines.
I think I could use some peer-review on this idea.
Here's the original spec for a full language: https://gist.github.com/voodooattac...
(which I found to be completely unnecessary, since I just implemented this pattern in plain TypeScript with no extra dependencies. See attached image for how TS code looks like).
The fact that it transcends language barriers if implemented as a library instead of a full language means less complexity in the face of adaptation.
Moving on, I was reviewing the idea again today when I discovered an amazing fact: because this is based on gene expression, and since DNA is recombinant, any state machine code built using this pattern is also recombinant[1]. Meaning you can mix and match condition bodies (as you would mix complete genes) in any program and it would exhibit the functionality you picked or added.
You can literally add behaviour from a program (for example, an NPC) to another by copying and pasting new code from a file to another. Assuming there aren't any conflicts in variable names between the two, and that the variables (for example `state.health` and `state.mood`) mean the same thing to both programs.
If you combine two unrelated programs (a server and a desktop application, for example) then assuming there are no variables clashing, your new program will work as a desktop application and as a server at the same time.
I plan to publish the TypeScript reference implementation/library to npm and GitHub once it has all basic functionality, along with an article describing this and how it all works.
I wish I had a good academic background now, because I think this is worthy of a spec/research paper. Unfortunately, I don't have any connections in academia. (If you're interested in writing a paper about this, please let me know)
Edit: here's the current preliminary code: https://gist.github.com/voodooattac...

For the past two years I've always wanted to make Programming tutorial videos to help others learn to code while fueling my passion for coding, discovery, and teaching..... and after two years I've finally uploaded my first two videos to YouTube.
I want to cover fun and exciting topics such as how to make custom plugins, create your own linux web server, and more... but decided to do a web basics 101 as my "Hello World" videos to get better in making content and production.
The inspiration for my "Web 101" comes from have a lot of my senior year CS classmates who have never seen HTML/CSS code before and wanting to provide them a source to get the basics all in one place.
I have a lofty goal of getting 10 subscribers by the end of the month. If you wouldn't mind giving me some pinpointers or comments I'd greatly appreciate it!
Also I did buy a new microphone so the sound quality between video one and two should be better!

After working 3 years in my current job and my boss hating anything to do with unit testing etc, I used my spare time to refactor our Makefiles to allow for the creation of unit and integration tests. I technically didn't tell my boss about it, so my heart was in my throat when he Skyped me with 'what did you change in ...'?
After having bashed any workflow with testing in it, I showed him the new workflow and automatic testing in Jenkins and he was actually enthousiastic, just like all other employees! I was hailed a hero in the R&D department, after all this time we can finally write universal tests. :D9 -

I did a thing. And I'm super happy about it. I just wanted to share.
I bought an LLC and have registered a domain name for it. I know there's a bit of a stigma about people who are always saying that they have ideas. But I'd like to think those with ideas that are willing to commit to them and actually create something with the idea instead of making others do it, is what matters the most.
Anyways. I'm not going to share anything about the idea because it is still in its infancy and I want to release it when it actually has traction.2 -

Warning: this is not a rant. I'm too happy and excited to rant right now.
Today I "finished" my first webpage!!!
Wohooo!
It's the blog I'll use. It's currently offline for obvious reasons but I intend to put it out there when I have more confidence on my skills and some content to put in it. I only used django, html and css, and I really dig the looks of it. My gf liked it so it can't be that ugly.
I still have a lot to learn with django, and I will add a thing or two to this
webpage but now I feel confident enough to make the backbone of my first real project : a platform to ease essay writing for history students. It's something simple for students to keep track of their essays thesis and ideas but also the bibliography they'll use and the thesis and ideas they think each text they read for the essay has. I intend later to extend the functionality so it can store all the texts the user has used in some useful and atractive manner so they can keep track of everything they've read, share it and use it for later works.
I'm so fucking excited I can't fucking sleep (it's 3 am right now).13 -

I'm having an awkward episode of excitement-fear-shock, so I don't know why I'm exactly writing this; I just needed to tell this to someone.
Few hours ago, I found out that, in a hardly believable turn of events, I have been accepted in a PhD program in the exact field I wanted, computability theory, in one of the top universities in my country. I would say this is a dream, to have the chance to study what I like most in this world, now I see I just got the opportunity to make this dream come true.
With an absurd feeling of joy and sadness, it also means that I have to let go of programming, at least as a career. I really don't know if I will have to crave for the job I have right now ever again, but I know that I won't regret this decision; this is what I want.
But anyway, I enjoy to code, and I will enjoy it any time.

Wish me luck! Any tips or advices dir the presentation?2 -
i am so excited about my first collaboration in 12 years! finally someone considers my capabilities as useful. now i just hope to not mess up the repo.
last time i was pair programming with my best friend, but since i moved all of this fell apart. -
i just released my first open source project with effort to make a comprehensible documentation for others to use as well as repetitive refactoring to not embarrass myself.
i am equally excited and knowing no one will care about that.
it is based on my effort to make my companies workflow more effective, knowing well this is just a temporary solution in advance to a professional developed system as opposed to having no system at all. so all of this work will fade into oblivion eventually.
i felt this has been too much work just to be forgotten someday so i cling to my naive hope someone might benefit from that and maybe i get one or three internet points.
in case someone is interested in a free quality management software for document control and access with no real state of art, you might find it interesting to visit my qualitymanagement repo4 -
Just wanted to share with you that I just finished my first ever mission as a freelance !
After a lot of information gathering and administrative cumbersome tasks to become a freelancer and a student at the same time, I have finally managed to acquire my first client and complete my first mission !
Excited to see what’s will come next !6 -
Most of the times I have it all sorted out. But when I begin to code, I somehow forget where to start.1

I am used to watch one or two episodes of a serie at late night before sleep.
after I finished my last one. I started with Silicone valley. the very first episode made me that excited.
maybe it's another late-sleep night. but Silicone valley will be awesome and inspiring I think2 -
Starting my first tech internship as an IT intern at my dads work. I’m super excited even though I know nothing about IT lol. I’m excited to learn and be exposed to some new stuff tho2

Got my hands on a Lenovo Explorer for 150€ throughout Black Friday. It delivers next week, really excited for it!

I am very much excited but at the same time very scared. My first job working for what I am studying. So Monday(18-June-2018) I am starting work at this small company as a Java Junior developer. I'd like to know from those who are in the industry already, how was the transition from school to actually working for a company?
I'd also really appreciate some bit of advice from everyone.3 -
Fuck yeah !
I have a challenge for once I can't wait 😎
I'm going deeper into the numbers then I ever have before 😎
I do need to calm down I'm visibly shaking ... I did have to much caffeine -
I was so excited like a kid when I received this.. Thank You devRant... *happily stick on my mac* *excited*1

I have a very little working experience with someone else's code, and even lesser experience working with a professional code base. All my previous apps had around 8-9 java files at max, with very rare moduling and folders.
And this start up where am currently the intern, has handed me theiir develop branch, it has almost a 100 java files, 50 external libs, massive use of architectural designs ,data binding and custom views and so much more ! Damn, am overwhelmed , but so excited to learn the practices i was procrastinating for so long 💗💗💗
The only problem is lack of a mentor, since the sir who made this beauty is a superman who is currently handling the server and ai side and isn't usually available.
But i guess i will do fine, hell it's a FBI's data key in my hands :D1 -
Excited about this freelance project.
Asked my team lead for 3 weeks to add server to the project for login/signup, realtime database and storage
(sounds stupid , but am an android guy, who used to make servers long back in november 2017)
its second day and i am already done😂😂😂
Don't know if my lead is happy or angry or panicking, his task to add an admin panel is still undone😜 -
!Rant, but something I wanted to share.
I started as a placement software developer on Tuesday, and yesterday I was working on production stuff.
Admittedly, it's an admin dashboard so it doesn't need to look great, but man, trying to get bootstrap tabs to switch and display a div with the charts we want on it using angular was a time and a half!
Despite being overwhelmed with information, and being mostly out of my depth developing in JavaScript (my main languages have been Java and C++) I'm having a great time, bar the 6.30am wake up time! :D -
I'm starting DIY electronic projects soon and in really excited. Although I'm gonna have to try to balance learning Web dev and C now. But other than that it should be fun!
-
Rant!
Cannot wait for DevRant stickers just so nusance clients, colleagues and manager discover this epic source of how much of an arse they are! -
when you are super excited to try out hyperdev beta, and so is everyone else and so there are errors1

First time I saw an IDE full of code, I was excited AF and wanted to become a programmer. Now when I showed my dad Xcode, he wasn’t excited at all. But he thinks I do some advanced tech stuff.
