TL;DR : I am sad about wonderful people that might lose their job and passion because of dumb fucking little shit eaters.
My 14yo sister told my family and me, today, about her science teacher who's a young unexperienced woman. She tried, at the start of the year, to be the "friendly" kind of teacher, allowing to eat or drink during class as long as it doesn't disrupt others, but quickly had to become severe because the students would not respect her even a bit (they still don't). They talk and never listen during her classes, they don't say hello, good bye, or anything when they see her, they are openly disrespectful towards her, etc..
As a result, the classes don't go well, the student don't learn anything, and these little hairy sweatballs still have enough nerves to go rant about her at her superiors ! The superiors answered that they're going to fire her next year since so much student complain about her.
- Thinking she was the problem, she assisted to some other teacher's science course to learn how to dispense her owns, in hope she could understand how to interest her students. These wonderful blond heads mocked her for that (I guess that self improvement is something laughable for the next generation)
- Students wanted some blank exams from previous years for a kind of country-wide exam they are going to take. She brought a whole box of it, not even one dipshit took one. Seeing that, my sister took some just to cheer her a bit.
- Students wanted some remedial course. She organised one, booked a room, prepared a lot of exercises and synthesis to hand them out. Would somebody care enough to show ? Not even one. She stayed 2 hours alone in hope that some student would come late.
- Once she was a bit ill and came to school anyway. After she left the room to go to the toilets because she had some food trying to go out from the wrong way, she came back after and tried to finish her class, while she would have had the right to go home and rest...
That's the kind of people who love their job and tries to do it well. Teaching is something beautiful and wonderful, and actually aiming at dispensing it in the best way possible is a great quality. She's available and volunteer, and all she gets is whining students and the risk to lose her job. She was smiling at the start of the year, now she just seem on the edge of crying everyday, every minute. According to my sister, she's the only teacher who's actually trying to teach, and she's the least rewarded of them all.
That fucking breaks my heart. I would smack their tiny pinheads with my terminally ill dog shit if I could. Because of them, she's may lose her job, and worse, her passion. She may become some bitter teacher, dispensing boring material because she has to eat, or just quit teaching altogether, while the world needs more people like that...
I'm sorry for the long rant, but I had to share it, it burdened me. I have a very deep respect for (real) teachers and this kind of story touches me on a very personal level... I hope my children won't be like that (I will make sure they won"t), and I hope the youngest devRanters here aren't like that either. I feel like many people never recognize the luck they have and the wonderful people they meet. You fucking have a chance to learn, to get an education, to raise your brain, to prepare your future, to sharpen your thinking, to enhance your knowledge... And you just piss on it like it was a dead pigeon. Well guess what : you are the dead pigeon. Or you would if you had wings, because at least, one day, the pigeon flew. You, you just dig some stinky hole in your own ignorant excretions, decorating it with glitter and calling it "swag".
I told my sister to go talk to the superiors and try to make them think twice before blindly firing a hopeful person. If they have to do it, the least they can do is to ask themselves why. I also told her to give this teacher some comforting words, just a short letter to let her know that her efforts don't go unnoticed. I think if was in that kind of situation, it would help me a bit if even one person came to tell me that I do well...
I really hope this teacher will be doing well next year and won't give up.
Please educate your children to appreciate what they have and to be supportive, even towards older people. They will grow appreciated and appreciating. Don't let them become spoiled shits who thinks life is doing everything just for them.36
One year ago, I adopted a new habit. I decided to learn one thing every day.
It could be anything, from making a sandwich to reading something about world war. It could be something which might interest me a lot or even bore me. But I did it every day without complaining or being lazy.
Usually I read various topics of interest, even a one line of information was sufficient to move forward. There were times when I had nothing motivational, so I used to navigate to Wikipedia's home page (I bookmarked it long ago) and read what they published. Over the time it became a routine and my subconscious took care of the rest.
Now exactly after 365 days, I know 365 new things which I never knew a year ago. I can talk on various topics, I can do things efficiently, I have developed useful skills, I know some really cool stuff.
It feels good to be a better person than your own past self.
I encourage you to do the same and this habit of learning one thing every day will change your life, change you as a person, and contribute a lot to your success (personal and professional).
If you don't know what to do and where to start, just go to Wikipedia's home page and read what they publish. Reading is a great way to learn & grow.
With this simple life hack, I promise you a lot of success.16
Look I understand online privacy is a concern and we should really be very much aware about what data we are giving to whom. But when does it turn from being aware to just being paranoid and a maniac about it.? I mean okay, I know facebook has access to your data including your whatsapp chat (presumably), google listens to your conversations and snoops on your mail and shit, amazon advertises that you must have their spy system (read alexa) install in your homes and numerous other cases. But in the end it really boils down to "everyone wants your data but who do you trust your data with?"
For me, facebook and the so-called social media sites are a strict no-no but I use whatsapp as my primary chating application. I like to use google for my searches because yaa it gives me more accurate search results as compared to ddg because it has my search history. I use gmail as my primary as well as work email because it is convinient and an adv here and there doesnt bother me. Their spam filters, the easy accessibility options, the storage they offer everything is much more convinient for me. I use linux for my work related stuff (obviously) but I play my games on windows. Alexa and such type of products are again a big no-no for me but I regularly shop from amazon and unless I am searching for some weird ass shit (which if you want to, do it in some incognito mode) I am fine with coming across some advs about things I searched for. Sometimes it reminds me of things I need to buy which I might have put off and later on forgot. I have an amazon prime account because prime video has some good shows in there. My primary web browser is chrome because I simply love its developer tools and I now have gotten used to it. So unless chrome is very much hogging on my ram, in which case I switch over to firefox for some of my tabs, I am okay with using chrome. I have a motorola phone with stock android which means all google apps pre-installed. I use hangouts, google keep, google map(cannot live without it now), heck even google photos, but I also deny certain accesses to apps which I find fishy like if you are a game, you should not have access to my gps. I live in India where we have aadhar cards(like the social securtiy number in the USA) where the government has our fingerprints and all our data because every damn thing now needs to be linked with your aadhar otherwise your service will be terminated. Like your mobile number, your investment policies, your income tax, heck even your marraige certificates need to be linked with your aadhar card. Here, I dont have any option but to give in because somehow "its in the interest of the nation". Not surprisingly, this thing recently came to light where you can get your hands on anyone's aadhar details including their fingerprints for just ₹50($1). Fuck that shit.
There are and should be always exceptions when it comes to privacy because when you give the other person your data, it sometimes makes your life much easier. On the other hand, people/services asking for your data with the sole purpose of infilterating into your private life and not providing any usefulness should just be boycotted. It all boils down to till what extent you wish to share your data(ranging from literally installing a spying device in your house to them knowing that I want to understand how spring security works) and how much do you trust the service with your data. Example being, I just shared most of my private data in this rant with a group of unknown people and I am okay with it, because I know I can trust dev rant with my posts(unlike facebook).41
My parents r pretty helpful with me programming. They r very supportive 😊😊
I even tell my mom how things work and she takes a lot of interest in understanding as well! She is my own rubber ducky ❤️❤️
My dad is busy and not a tech minded person so he is kinda ignorant about tech, but never stops encouraging me 😊😊
Go my mom and dad!! Yaaay 😍😍2
So this bloody hilarious, I submit my PWA to windows store, mainly for shits and giggles, see how the whole thing works and all that.
According to them, this is 'Opening within my application" and I am apparently able to access user details via google own sign in link, not SSO.
This exists solely for the benefit of Microsoft who are having trouble comprehending the fact that RTMS Events does NOT have Authentication.
Microsoft believes that as the application uses Google Maps, and when Google Maps opens a “Sign In” button appears, that I am able to access your personal information.
As any reasonable person will understand, that is not the case, logging into Google Maps/Google for the benefit of using Google Maps in NO WAY gives anyone else access to your personal information.
Managed to make myself look like a fucking moron again today...
Can't mount NFS share, get "permission denied". Huh, that's weird... It's correctly exported.
Well it's correctly exported and rpcinfo -p $HOST times out... Must be firewall rule.
Firewall rule is changed but still no joy "permission denied"... Fuck sake networks, can't you do anything right first time?!!!
Firewall rule is correct I am reliably informed... Go about proving that it's not fucking correct and provide "evidence" to show this, I was a little bit more blunt than was strictly required.
Networks say they will take another look.
I turn NFS logging to verbose for my own interest and notice the line "path/to/directory is not a valid directory".
I, as a moron, had missed a "/" at the start of the path. That's why I still couldn't mount after the firewall change.
Go over and apologise in person and explain how I'm a total idiot.
So once I knew this person that pretended to be an expert in everything, your typical know-it-all. Anyway, one day I challenged them to code an application that did x. I knew for a fact they didn't know shit about coding but they accepted anyway. After 4 hours we were both done and at this point alot of people had gained interest in it. The know it all got up and started boasting about being a tech genius so I thought I might surruptitiously go and check their browser history. Sure enough, top entry was a code example website with a complete applcation x given to you. Looked in the notepad application (ikr) and saw perfectly formatted code that looked, suprise suprise exactly the same as the code of the website. Their excuse was: "You never said we had to write it all from scratch".3
My dream project is to create "The Machine" just like Finch did in Person of interest or to create the WestWorld Droids.
The network guy in me screams in agony!
I Just started watching person of interest, and this happens...9
So about 3 weeks ago I was laid off from my dream job due to corporate bullshit. From the feedback received since then it is clear that the company made a mistake hiring a brand new React dev while they really needed an experienced one. Because the consultants who were supposed to be weren't. And the other in-house front end dev was an elitist asshole. And I never received proper feedback until it was too late. Actually I still don't have proper feedback save for some vague stuff which really sounds like the kind of feedback you'd give someone in the middle of their learning process. They even said eventually given more time I could have made it. But alas they felt they had to make a call in the best interest of the company.
Things moved fast since then, I took a week to recover and then I spent time updating my resume before getting back in touch with the recruiter who got me my last job. Great guy and he was happy to help me again. Applied to some positions, got some replies, first in person interview I go to they are immediately willing to take me on.
So now I'm supposed to start tomorrow but somehow I'm having my doubts. The company isn't an IT company but rather a fashion company. They believe in developing in house tools because past attempts with external companies resulted in them trying to push their vision through. Knowing who they worked with I agree, they tried to oversell all the time. But after talking with their developers I noticed they are behind on their knowledge. But so am I. So there was no tech interview which means I am getting an easy way in. And if they honour their word I'll be signing tomorrow for around my old wages.
So you'd think that sounds good right? And yet I'm worried it's going to be another shit show working on software without proper analysis or best practices. I mean the devs aren't total idiots, they are mediors like me and I think their heart is in the right place. They want to develop a good project but it will be just us 3 making a modern .net wpf application with the same functionality of the old Access based system currently in use. I was urged by the boss to draw on my experience and I think he wants me to help teach them too. But I'm painfully aware for my decade since graduating I'm a less than average .net dev who struggles with theory and never worked a job where I had someone more experienced to teach me. I coasted most of the time in underpaid jobs due to various reasons. But I'd always get mad over shitty code and practices. Which I realize is hypocritical for someone who couldn't explain what a singleton class is or who still fails at separation of concerns.
So yeah my question for the hivemind is what advice would you give a dev like me? I honestly dislike how poor I perform but it often feels like an insurmountable climb, and being over 30 makes it even more depressing. On the other hand I know I should feel blessed to find a workplace who seems to genuinely believe that people grow and develop and wishes to support me in this. Part of me thinks I should just go in, relax, but also learn till I'm there where I want to be and see if these people are open to improving with me. But part of me also feels I'm rushing into this, picking the first best offer, and it sure feels like a step backwards somehow. And that then makes me feel like an ugly ungrateful person who deserves her bad luck because she expects of others what she can't even do herself :(4
Suck my sweatty balls you cock sucking, brain washed ignorant flat earth mother fuckers. If only evolution was more aggressive, we'd have gotten rid of you in the stome age. But hey you can still choke your crap filled mouths on fucking tide pods you stupid cunts.
If only people would stop bashing technologies just because their news say so.
Seriously every forum I visit, there's always some post saying "fuck technology x, it's ..."
Poor me, a dev, sometimes fails to ignore idiots and replies to such posts. "But it's not anonymous, the government said.."
"it is against god's will, our *insert religious figure here* said..."
Fuck your cock sucking governments!!
It's just like every fucking innovation ever. First religion: I'm not against religion at all, if it's something that brings a person peace of mind... but please keep away from interfering with scientific progress. After all if you're so sure about what you're believing in, there's nothing you should be afraid that science would reveal, no?
Then governments: government? Manipulating people? Feeding brains shit? pfftt when does that happen?
Fuck every cock sucking government.. except you know, tbe good ones I guess :p
If people listened to those ignorant cunts back in the days, we'd still believe we're the center of this whole fucking universe, and that a whale ate the moon every now and then...
And then you find out ignorance is infectious. Ignorants start spreading ignorance, and if enough ignorants believe some shit... the shit becomes the truth.
Can you please fucking read about the thing you're about to ignorantly bash before doing so?
Can you stop listening to news and governments about this crap? If anything it's in your govs best interest to keep you afraid of progress.
I'm literally just talking for the sake of it, It's what rants are for no?
Idk I should probably just ignore idiots on the internet... but there's a limit to how much ignorance and stupidity you can take.
At least we'll never run out of restaurant employees I guess5
I would love to develop true A.I, though one which doesn't want to kill.
Sort of like the machine in Person of interest, something which can be everywhere and acts as a guardian for all.
But ultimately looks after me.
When you are involved in a conflict of interest project and its kept under wraps ...but your IT director still wants you to do it because his friend needs something done but don't want to pay for it
Who else has faced this? Or am I the only one...?4
I'm typically very humble about my work. There's a certain project that I enjoy a lot. It is challenging to me, which is something important to me. I learn a lot.
Colleagues do not enjoy the project in the way that I do. In fact, most of them don't like it or try to avoid when they can. When they can't, they often consult with me about the project. I have a genuine curiosity and interest in it.
However, there is one aspect of it that I don't like at all, but I deal with it. It comes with the territory, I guess. What IS discouraging and turns me away from it though, is when colleagues "get the better end of the deal" when it comes to making special arrangements for this project. Sure, make me dedicated to it for a period of time so that I stay focused on the topic, but yet, kind of do the same for another team member but reward the other person with not having to also deal with the particular task I don't enjoy. Give them the pieces I enjoy and stick me on the pieces I don't.
I know this is a very general post and it probably makes no sense, but I needed to let off some steam and still keep it somewhat anonymous. I work hard for this project and I often don't take credit when it's given to me / when I should be taking it. It's just discouraging how things are arranged sometimes.2
A coversation with a classmate:
Me: So what tech stack do we use for this project?
Him: You guys decide... I'm fine with anything.
Me: So you're fine with any tech we use? No opinions?
(We need confirmation from all members but he, being the uninterested person he was, gave half-hearted replies)
Him: I'm actually a ROR person, not interested in node.
Dude we understand that you prefer ruby but at least help us decide! We studied all of this together... sheesh2
I actually do have something to rant about!
The people I've decided to work with... are complete and utter fools. They don't want to keep updated with new practices and merely talk about awesome stuff... Let me elaborate.
The first person is someone I spent really many hours just writing with, I've helped him build on his personal project, which has now become our project (which I've done most of the work on now). He keeps writing about things that aren't fucking relevant for the current task - furthermore, he completely refuses to use any type of collaboration software in order to keep an eye on tasks we want to, and already have completed. He likes Git but doesn't provide helpful git messages, sometimes even stuff like 'forgot this'.. never any freaking description of what's actually been done! Not even after agreeing it should be done, he just doesn't understand what a helpful message is apparently.
I might be a bit special regarding wanting to follow practices, but how the fuck do you make any amount of money by being so ignorant!? He was a WP 'developer' a while ago, and has since changed to JS and are using a framework which he doesn't understand - he can't even remember what the documentation states.
So why do I 'work' with him? He knows a lot of phrases he's read in books, blogs, and the likes. That makes him really inspirational and positive and he really wants to become successful(like me!). But over the last few months, I've realized how bad he is at programming - he doesn't know basic programming concepts and have a hard time applying any sort of knowledge to his programming. If it's not pre-built, he can't use it, not even if the documentation has specific examples. He barely grasps the concept of binding data to a variable. He wouldn't know how to access it again though, it's just for the sake of binding it to some existing functionality.
The other guy really likes his old style. He hired me to maintain some application. Which has turned out to be a hell of several small tasks he needs to be finished or reworked - with no clear definition of the task. Most of the time, he'll do some initial changes, show the changes to me, vaguely explain what they do (not what he's trying to achieve) and first THEN ask me to do these changes, most often in some files that don't exist (he uses the wrong filenames so I have to guess/ask where the changes need to be made).
To top it all off, old syntax is used and don't get me started on the spaces+tabs for indenting lines... Because I've already added a great ESLint+Prettier conf and everything should be nicely formatted according to pre-defined rules.
But he won't take the time to install some plugins in his editor and I'm left with sometimes buggy, badly formatted code (the code I have to make changes with!) - that's while he several times have agreed that I can do what I want and that he even questions his own ways when looking at my changes which he calls by-the-book.
So why the motherfucking fuck do I keep working with him?
Well, he keeps paying so that's really nice - I haven't been able to properly execute the bigger tasks(which pays more) though, due to a lack of information or some badly written code I couldn't quite figure out how works (at a glance).
He also keeps talking about these new projects he wants to make.. he even has these freaking papers with descriptions and data-structures and we converse really good about these new awesome projects. He also likes cryptocurrencies(which is an interest of mine he has inflamed quite a bit) and lastly, he seems like a genuinely nice guy who I'd like to spend some time with even besides coding and work.
So now I stand here - stuck with people that make me feel like a demi-god or something because I use a git style-guide and ESLint+Prettier with the Airbnb style-guide.
What should I do? I'd really like some remote work and have a desperate need for money... So much so, that I might even have to pick up a fulltime job, in order to save my sorry ass - all because I like speaking with people who just like the thought of programming...
I'm actually quite lonely with my thoughts and they are the two only people I've had some sort of relationship with - who has an invested interest in programming/dev... I really like that, despite having to follow their thoughts as they surely can't follow mine.
Please be my friend or give me some paid work lol.
Also, I've been moving the last couple weeks - those weeks has been the most stressful of my life and have not contributed to my overall wellbeing and relations with people... It's good to be back at the computer again and be reading some devRant though!1
When I created stubmatic (a http mock application), we were using it in our internal project. First time when some other project expressed their interest, I was happy and eager to help.
So the person they sent for the training asked me his first question: "I followed all the steps, but It is not working"
I quickly checked his code and replied "you're using GET instead of POST method"
Then his second and last question about stubmatic was "why don't your code understand which method has to be used? Why should a client need to tell every time?"
I can recommend a very good series, which is about an AI:
Person of Interest
It catched me so I think I won't be the only one.8
I always wanted to become a business man like my dad and I was going to study BBA. Until I saw the tv show Person of Interest, I know it sounds silly but it inspired me to make my own AI system that can predict stuff.
I could not make the machine or Samaritan, but in my final year project, we managed to make an AI system that can categorize emails automatically without any input from the user. The system can create category names by itself and put the emails accordingly.7
I want to make a "game" on learning spoken languages so people can study while not stressing out on the learning.
-Method to memorize is different with every person
-Stress and frustration
-Can be interesting, depends on user's interest and willingness
-Explore vocab by exploring or reading in-game texts
-Grammar is heavily broken down to help relate meanings and thorough understanding of a sentence as well as slang
Why I put disadvantages first was to see how the software will impact a person's negativity/postivity when using it. As in for example, when you see something that is difficult to understand, users tend to procrastinate or drop it due to it being "difficult"/alienated.
-- onto the rant--
Many apps have really awful way of teaching, its just 3-4 apps chucked into 1 aka all-in-one and expects people to pay just because of the all-in-one app containing flash cards, sentences, audio etc. I use my phone (android) and normally during my intern or my way to school, I would do my reading in the other languages, (separate apps, all free). Also apart from that, students sometimes take 2 years to learn but drop because it's difficult.
TL:DR; apps and classes give shitty lessons, I want to outdo them and let students have a better chance at studying new spoken languages.2
I'm binge watching Person of Interest right now and I would like to know the community feels about it.
I feel that it is still futuristic and we aren't there yet. What do you think?1
So tired of app developers localizing app information with Google Translate. Use a real person that can READ AND WRITE IN THE FUCKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE or scrap the entire translation and do marketing in English. And Google? Why the fuck do you allow people to embarrass themselves by providing machine translated SHIT in the Store Listing options?
Some gems found on Google Play Store, translated from Norwegian to English the way I as Norwegian interpret them.
