Me and co-worker, working with firebase.
Co-worker: Hey man, I need the private key for the server.
Me: Why?
Co-worker: I need to put it in the client so that I can authenticate.
Me: No.
Co-worker: But this guide tells me ...
Me: No
Co-worker: ... that I need it to create tokens so I can log in.
Me: ... No.
Co-worker: But the guide..
Me: If the guide would ask you to kill yourself, would you?
Co-worker: No but..
*I walk over*
Me: This isn't even related to what we are doing. You can see it in the title.
Me: Did you read the title of this post?
Co-worker: No.7 -
*has a 94% in information security class*
*teacher gives us study guide for final exam*
*heavily take notes in the margins and study the packet obsessively for four days*
*come in to take the final*
*exam doesn't mention a single thing on the study guide*
*makes a 78 on it*
*final class grade drops down to an 87% (a letter grade lower than before)*
"Congratulations, Miss Meowijuanas! You had the highest score on the final!"
*hands me a candy bar like I'm a child*
"Maybe it's because you gave the class an extremely poor study guide which emphasized on material that wasn't covered on our actual exam? You shouldn't be congratulating me on a 78."
*teacher says he used the study guide from another teacher and must not have looked at it thoroughly enough*
*shakes hand and thanks him for having me as a student this semester*
*kicks a trash bin outside of the university 6 or 7 times*
I'm not even mad about my grade. An 87% is nice, although I know I would've done better otherwise. It's his pure, unmasked and unashamed laziness that makes me feel so violent. It's showing students like me that an educated individual like yourself couldn't be bothered to take five minutes or so to read over a fucking document for his students to make sure they're properly prepared for a major exam.
How the fuck can you be hired as a university professor and be this obvious about not putting effort into your work.
Fuck you, sir.
And fuck you again for all of my other classmates who did poorly because they followed your inaccurate study guide.13 -

Senior devs out there, please be supportive to juniors. Don't treat them bad just because they don't know as much as you do. Guide them and help them learn and grow as devs. That'll make your company (and/or the community) a better place to work at, because everyone will be a better dev, and you might learn and grow in the process as well.15

One thing you learn after a few years in IT and some languages is that there is no problem with most languages.
BUT
Ugly code is ugly code! Has half of the devs I have been working with never heard of a style guide? Is it so long of a read that they just skip it.
I have flashback of variables being called "a", "b", "c" and/or methods being called "method_alfa" in production code.
In my opinion, repeatedly sh*ting all over a style guide is a reason for getting fired.1 -
The best language to learn.
well actually there's no "best" language, only a good programmer.
all languages can be useful, coding for games, coding for apps, for hacking.
don't choose language because people says it's the best language.
choose 4 languages you find them easy to understand, do basic coding in this 4 languages.
after this, compare it and take the one that was most fun to write.
of course language like Python is more easy for non programmer to study.
but some people find C++ more fun and easy to understand from the beginning.
enjoy and if you have a question, comment it.6 -

3 weeks.
Am I just stupid? It took me 3 whole weeks to finally come to the realisation today that the Elasticsearch "guide" and Elasticsearch "reference" were different, with different version numbers. I've been ignoring Google search results that say Elasticsearch 2.x for WEEKS and wondering why I couldn't find a solution to simple problems.
Turns out, the current Elasticsearch "guide" is on version 2.x while Elasticsearch itself is on version 6.x.
They even have almost identical URLs that go ../guide/../reference and ../guide/../guide.
WHY? Why would you do that? Am I just stupid? Am I still getting it wrong? What the heck is up with Elasticsearch documentation? -

How to earn a lot of money as a programmer?
So this question might sound a little naive and too simple, but earning a lot of money is what we all want after all right? Collecting experiences from people in the business should be a good idea.
So this is the position I am in:
I am a German student in my 13th year of school (which means I will graduate this summer) and I am very interested in information technology. I know C++ pretty well by now and I have built a rendering engine for a game I want to make using openGL already, which I am very proud of.
I would love to turn this passion into my profession and thats why I plan to attend a dual course of computer science next year (dual means that I will be employed at a company (or similar) in parallel to the studying course).
But what direction should I be going in if I want to make big money later on? I am ready to spend a lot of time and work on this life project but I don't know which directions are the most promising. I hate being a tiny gear in a huge machine that just has to keep spinning to keep the machine alive, I want to be part of a real project (like most people probably) and possibly sell a product (because I think that is how you really make money).
Now I know there is no magic answer to this, but I bet many people here have made experiences they can share and this could help a lot of people directing their path in a more success oriented way.
I personally am especially interested in fields which are relatively low-level and close to memory (C++), go hand in hand with physics and 3D simulation and are somewhat creative and allow new solutions. (These are no hard lines, I just thought I should give a little direction to what I know already and what I am interested in)
But really, I am interested in any work you are likely to earn a lot of money with.12 -
1) search a project on github
2) read its documentation and decide if it's worth it
3) read contribution guide lines
4) contribute

Some cheapskate insists on writing a guide to selfhost <software> on Heroku and wants to add it to the official documentation, promising to maintain it (since none of the other devs are using or planning to use Heroku). I volunteer to give them a chance on grounds of it being high quality and maintained by that person in the future which they both promise.
Our docs are written as markdown files on github.
So here we go:
Starts a pull request: uploads their """guide""" as a docx. The content is completely unformatted, basically just an enumerated list.
Tell them to format it as markdown, suggest using github gists.
They go ahead and copy pasta their unformatted list into a gist.txt "allright i made it into gist for ya"
Tell them that they did not format it as markdown.
"sorry updated it in markdown :P"
I look at the file, it is still raw text in a gist.txt. Maybe a bit more spaced out, not that I would care to notice any changes at this point.
Tell them it is still not markdown and link them to a perfect example of another guide that takes advantage of code fragments for commands etc and is properly rendered since it uses .md
"I updated it to the markdown this time XP Can you give me some suggestions on how it looks?"
"How it looks"... "how it LOOKS"... I click the link for the 5th time and IT IS STILL JUST A RAW FUCKING GIST.
Jfc that person has some serious reading/thinking disability. To imagine them to be proactively keeping their guide up to date in the future is absolutely impossible. At that point I pulled out my support for the request since it was already taking more effort to even get a readable version of guide than I estimated for the whole process of adding it.
Oh, and one of the steps originally suggested in the """guide""" was adding the credentials file into the vcs.2 -

What can I do when my boss tells me to guide the “Senior Software Engineer” while I am just a “Software Engineer”?
Also, the SSE just asked me to help him/her with his/her project coz he/she forgot the skill that he/she was hired for.
I opened this up to my boss, he just told me to guide and not spoonfeed her.
So, questions:
I really find it unfair that we have different job titles, how can I tell my boss that the SSE doesn’t really have the skills to proceed with the project?
Second, do I also need to define and establish the criteria for Lead, SSE and SE within the company? (My boss scheduled a meeting for this exclusively)10 -

The one who don't help are indeed are of two types: one who know everything and want to pull you down

I'm studying first year bachelor's, but I have experience, so I should get a job nevertheless.6 -
They want to make a project fast, give me an unexperienced frontend dev to guide late in the project, gave design a shit ton of time and cut my hours by 25%. Good luck. I don't even care if the project is late and or if I get fired. I can find another job7

Tfw you're done with dealing with idiotic bug reports ("Game crashed pls fix", "Not working pls fix", like that) you force the bug reporters to read a copy-pasted version of Simon Tatham's Bug Reporting Guide (https://chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgt...) on a page before going to the bug reporting page and set a minimum of 100 words in the bug report filter just to filter the BS.

Some time ago I was looking for materials regarding Ansible automation tool and realized that most of them suggests setting up the lab environment using virtualization (like VirtualBox). In my opinion that is not the best approach – virtual machines consume lots of resources and take some time to start/kill. So I decided to write a guide for setting up Ansible lab environment using Docker containers. Containers require significantly less resources than vm’s and can be bring up and down really quickly. Additional advantage is easy way of automating whole environment using docker-compose. You can find my guide at github: https://github.com/LMtx/... Any feedback is very welcome :)3

Does this book worth reading?
Hello I've finished several books about JavaScript already and many of them mention this one
JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition [2011]
I am a bit embarrassed, because despite it looks like a thorough 1000 pages guide, its last edition dates 2011 year.
From one point of view, it should contain core concepts that still remain the same, from the other, reading 2011 book in 2018 sounds like a not very good decision.
What would you say?8 -

CollegueRant
Colleague from other departement told me, his teamlead tacitly removed all comments from the source. They have no official style guide about comments or discussed it on the team, teamlead just thinks the source should be readable enough, so that there are no comments needed.
That would make me think about quitting really fast.1 -

Yesterday I was invited to Google's Foobar Challenge. I just solved the level 1 problem which was simple. I don't have a CS degree nor am I studying for one. May someone guide me in the right direction?2

So Google’s Gemini API challenge is currently ongoing and I am looking for idea suggestions.
- The goal is to create an AI enabled platform for web or mobile with Gemini API integration.
- The idea is expected to be unique or creative (unique ideas are favored so I heard)
- I found out the last winner of Google’s Dialogflow competition created a Mobile app for the elderly that provides screen flow guide on usage of some of Google’s product (ie: Youtube, Gmail, Drive etc.). This is just an idea guide and I see why such would win. It’s not a must requirement.
The final code will be open source and surely would credit the original idea owner. I need your ideas fellow devranters. What AI enabled app do you think have the best chance of winning this challenge? I have some time to spare on this one.5 -

Why the fuck would you bother creating a style guide if you don't adhere to it even a bit in creating mockups?!
Sure as hell I can code what you want, but you gotta stick to the agreed guidelines, dude! We can't keep adding *slightly different* elements, it'll lose its purpose! -

Every time I look up a tutorial, a guide, some sort of documentation on something that's new to me, and all I can find is written with the implication that you already have a level of understanding on this thing. "Ultimate beginner" guides that leave you hanging, because it isn't a beginners guide!
Trying Firebase (coming from vanilla JS) and it works fine in local enviroment. Tries it on server: nope. That environment is different, with different paths and multiple "roots" (addon domains).
Google that? Sure. Nobody has had this issue. Stackoverflow doesn't seem to know (or care).

I created a comprehensive, fundamental guide to privacy:
- it's eternal — new apps come and go, but while the internet and our computers are the way they are, the guide works and needs no adjustment;
- it's permissive — you don't need to live in the woods. Yes, some services should not be used as-is, but you may still enjoy their content;
- it's easy — yes, it requires your typical content consumption to be somewhat altered, yet there are no taboos.
Content and medium aren't the same. Instagram stories have fundamentally nothing in common with Instagram itself.
There is no inherently bad or harmful content.
My search for privacy is over. Not anymore is it an uphill battle. Yes, I can do a finite number of things to achieve privacy once and for all. No, this doesn't limit my content consumption.
I'm going to write a complete essay. Stay tuned.1 -

I've been working on this personal project for awhile, I showed some screenshots, then I showed some updates (which I promptly deleted cause it was plain ugly). A website aimed at the "not-so-seasoned" devs, and I've been at a creative plateau for about 3 days now. I try to do some front-end, when I like what I see, I take care of the corresponding server-side logic, but for some reason, I'm having "Developer's block" (is that even a thing?).
Every second that goes by I try to do something else none code related, but I can't shake thinking about the project, but once I switch back to it, fuckin crickets.
I'm not asking a question this time (for once lol), just a mini dev's block rant. -

I don't understand how Facebook can restrict my account when I'm following *their official guide* to make a WhatsApp bot (which entails creating a business manager account and all that tralala) which basically makes it impossible to continue through the guide to get the WhatsApp bot to do what I want it to do (I only got as far as having it send a demo text and set up some of the account BS).
Needless to say, I went for the Discord bot approach and got it to do what I needed.3 -
