Disclaimer: I have a strong hate towards apple for multiple reasons and this will only be temporary. (thank God for that)
My oneplus one is battery dead and the power button quit as well. Repair costs would be as expensive as buying a new phone (200-300 price range) so searching for a new one.
But, I need a temporary phone in the mean time.
A phone with googled-android is absolutely a no-go. I used to do that sometimes but those were wrong decisions.
So, for the sake of trying, I'm going for a second hand iPhone.
Will be testing how it works for me (never been able to form an opinion on it since iOS 4.2 (iPod touch)) and will also be searching my ass off for a smartphone which supports lineage/rooting (TIPS BETWEEN ABOVES PRICE RANGE ARE VERY WELCOME) because I'm fucking hell not planning on using that (the iPhone) fucker any longer than a month.
Even if I love it over android (highly doubt that), I won't continue using it for very specific reasons.
Wish me luck 😅15
Finally got my phone (oneplus one) screen repaired.
When home, I'll set it up again so I'll finally have a device which isn't integrated within any Google malware/mass surveillance bullshit.
Using a phone with Google services honestly makes me feel uncomfortable 🤢14
On my way to buy a second hand Oneplus One!
I don't think that not being able to remove Google services from my phone because this phone isn't supported by open source roms is a valid excuse anymore, especially since the new dutch surveillance law goes into plan the 1st of May.
I don't have that much money but I can afford this second hand device right now so let's do this.
Will install an open source rom without Google apps onto it!26
Yesterday I successfully replaced the charging port and headphone jack of my Oneplus 5
Teacher : What's 1+6 ?
Some kid : it's 7
Fan boy: Shut the fuck up kid. It's still 6.. It's Oneplus 6.13
Decided to update my rooted Oneplus One...
Everything worked on the first try without even having to do a bunch of reboots...
Hate it when weird stuff like that happens.2
Phone charged 100%
Whatsapp 1% Battery used
Screen 1% Battery used
WhatsApp is consuming too mich battery6
HOLY SHIT ANDROID 8 IS FUCKING PERFECT! MY OP5 JUST STARTED IN 5 SECONDS! AND THE PARALLEL APPS ARE FUCKING GREAT TOO! SOO MANY FEATURES!10
Yesterday (or the day before that depending on your timezone and day-night schedule - this Friday) my OnePlus 6T arrived. After only 2 days of time between placing the order and actually getting the phone, quite impressive!
The DHL guy asked me upon receipt - is it the OnePlus 6T? - Yes it is!! - "An amazing device it is!", he said. And honestly.. he couldn't be more right.
I might be a bit biased on this because after all I did just spend €630 on this phone. But it feels so snappy, high quality, the 8GB of RAM is just.. it blows my mind. But I'm sure that the other reviews did this sort of jazz already.
The things that set this phone apart for me though were the following.
When I get a new phone or tablet, usually the first thing I do is rooting it. This one was no different, about an hour after receipt it was successfully rooted and loaded with Magisk. Currently I'm still in the phase of "getting to know the phone", wherein fuckups are usual. This time again being no different - I removed some apps and apparently did something to it that the search engines - both Google and DuckDuckGo - didn't quite like, as both of them would crash upon application launch. Me in full panic mode of course, desperately trying to find the stock ROM (which doesn't seem to be present in its usual form) or a new set of GApps (which didn't resolve the issue). OnePlus does seem to offer its OTA updates in zip archives though. So I downloaded its latest update (same as what was on the device) and applied it.
That's when the nerdgasm happened.
The "update" was simply a matter of going into the settings, tapping this and that and applying the update. No recovery, no unrooting, no nothing. The update just went like that despite the phone being rooted and just having had TWRP flashed to it. I always wanted this sort of thing, which even the Nexus couldn't offer - having the cake and eating it too. Being able to root the device and muck around with it while still being able to update the device timely without too many hurdles. This fucking thing does it!!!
That is to say, after my initial nerdgasm I did find that it bulldozed over my su binary (effectively unrooting the thing), custom emoji I've set (iOS 12 because fuck Google's most recent emoji set) and some other things. But those are easy to install back, much more so than it would've been to download a whole Android release and dirty flash it, as it was on the Nexus.
Other than that, battery life, dash charging (edit: on that topic, it does remain cool like a cucumber despite getting 15-20W of power jammed into it, quite impressive!), snappiness, the usual jazz.. eh, as I said earlier that's the usual reviewer stuff. But this feature of being able to upgrade the phone while it's modified, that's something which seems to be severely underrated by those.
Oh and during kernel builds, I couldn't quite get the source to work - probably due to my lack of experience with builds of Android kernels - but I did find that this phone actually exposes its kernel config through /proc/config.gz as it should. None of my MediaTek devices do this, so that's something that I found really appealing. Always nice to see when a manufacturer exposes this information to give you a stock sort of config that you can be rest assured will work configuration-wise. And it allows you to see what the stock kernel is actually built with, which again is really nice. I quite like this! It really encourages further development.11
Just came back from a new café (to the pedantic among us, yes I know it's a bar.. get over it).
And I met some Apple fanboy 🤭
So the guy kept on bragging about his shiny iPhone 6.. and I figured that I'd chime in. Due to my short-term memory being terrible, I'll be paraphrasing here.
S: iPhone usar _/\_
M: iPhone 6 ey..? I've heard about some devices in which the old ones are throttled down in a system update "to save the battery".
S: Yes, biweekly updates!! You can even delay them to tune them down to the time during which your device is charging and can commence its system update.
M (thinking): You've clearly missed the point sir.. but on Android, system updates don't need to be willfully delayed even. They (usually) won't commence unless your device is 80% and charging. OnePlus has been an exception to this though, probably under the assumption that their users are mostly power users that know what they're doing.
M: You do realize that given that your iPhone 6 is quite old already, Apple will very likely start throttling your device during a system update in the next few months, right.
S: What the hell dude.. look, look how smoothly it's been going for the last few years!!! Nothing wrong with that.
M: Just wait until your repair bill comes from those Geniuses 🤭
M: Sir, you do realize that Apple quotes €600 for battery repairs nowadays, right.
S: What the hell dude!!! I can buy a whole new phone for that much!!
M: Exactly!! That's exactly Apple's business tactic!!! They design their phones as such that the battery replacement (one of the most common repairs) requires you to replace not only the battery, but the whole chassis!!! And on the XS, the battery replacement is nothing short of atrocious!!!
M: Here, have a look at this: https://youtube.com/watch/...
*shows Louis' newest video about him switching to iPhone XS*
S: Yeah that's just bullshit. I bet you're showing me this on one of those crappy Samsungs.
M: No sir. I'm showing this on my Nexus 6P, that is tethered to my OnePlus 6T. Speaking of which, let me introduce you to the Nexus 6P's (one of the crappiest Android flagships to ever exist) repair, the battery replacement of which I've done myself.
(you can watch the iFixit video about it here: https://youtube.com/watch/...)
*explains heatgun, screwdriver, heatgun battery replacement of Nexus 6P and the time each step takes - more than an hour combined*
S: Yeah that's because it's one of those crappy Androids. That'd never happen to this shiny iPhone, look, I've got a $20 battery right here!!!
M: Sir... That's a battery for a MacBook. A laptop battery.... 🤨
I love how willfully ignorant these Apple users are. To them, all that exists is Apple and Samsung (both of which I hate because lockdown). And they apparently don't even know what repair they have to look for when they'll need one.. maybe that's why those Genius Bars exist? 🤭
I'd love to see the guy's face when the Geniuses quote him the price for battery replacement when his planned obsolescence time comes 🤭14
Someone tell OnePlus that they're drunk and should go home. I AM PERFECTLY FINE WITH THIS ONE... devRant can do whatever it wants.4
OnePlus, first their price grow constantly closer to other companies prices, second when you make a poll to know if you should keep the headphones jack, the community says you should, and then make a phone without one... well you should have expected the backlash6
This probably isn't the coolest bug I've ever solved, but surely the one with the biggest faceplam
So I was building a Bluetooth smart watch that pairs with your Android device for the final year bachelor's project. The submission was in a 2 days and it was all ready and it suddenly stopped working.. Spent hours trying to fix it, even tried to get a replacement Bluetooth module (was out of stock -_-).. After a day's worth of freaking out I discovered that Android phones (at least the OnePlus X) don't connect to Bluetooth modules when their battery is below 15% -_- and since I was freaking out I would let the phone charge a bit and get back to debugging and it never crossed 15% so it never worked.. One day of debugging attempts later it suddenly struck me that low battery might be an issue.. And voila! It worked after charging the phone
Shouldn't such things be clearly mentioned in documentation :/
(Btw, got full for the project, got a 10/10 GPA for the semester)1
How Google loost its data Monopoly-
Step 1- US bans Huawei
Step 2- Google Bans Huawei
Step 3- China Gov helps Huawei get back on its feet
Step 4- Huawei makes their own OS to rival Google, the OS can run Android apps as well as IoS apps and has its own language/framework for developing new apps
Step 5- China bans Google from their market
Step 6- Chinese mobile manufacturers adopt the new OS
Step 7- China's population starts using the new OS i.e. country with the world's largest population starts using the new OS
Step 8- Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus who already own approx 40% of India's smartphone market start distributing the new OS based phones in India. Factors like cheaper devices take this market share to 50%+
Step 9- Cry, cause the new OS is now being used by approximately 30% of the world's population.
Yeah, bring your hate in the comments but come back and talk to me in August 2022...12
So nearly done with the work app and I need these images scaled accurately (it's for comparing pupils) my problem is I'd normally ask my brother to make the images but he is busy with uni for the next few weeks.
I'm just wondering is there a tool I can use that can rescale images (I have images from the iPhone app, and I gotta say I had to add in % changes despite the proper dpi sizing), I'm looking at the Android documentation but what's funny is in the listed resolutions OnePlus 3 wasn't included (along with some other newer resolutions) lol, and also Wikipedia for OnePlus 3 has the width and height switched (for some reason the author imagined the phone is also in landscape lol).
So do you guys know of something I can use? Programming is one thing but designer is another :/4
Fuck yeah!!! After over a month of being stuck without a phone, the funds have finally been released to buy a new one. It'll be the OnePlus 6T. Kernel source available on launch, wicked specs that rival PC's - 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a quarter TB of storage... Fuck yeah!!!! Never settle indeed!!! :D5
YouTube. Hate and love for it just like I would for an abusive partner.
Wanna build a website with Wix? Fuck no!
Wanna manage WordPress over SSH? Fuck no!
.. well I kind of do but a turd remains a turd regardless of how it's maintained. WordPress can go die from a torture as long as the time everyone has wasted on it loading already. So no, I don't give a flying fuck about WordPress' new interface.
Wanna buy a new Samsung phone despite just having bought a OnePlus already? YOUTUBE, HOW ABOUT YOU GO FUCK YOURSELF AND YOUR SHITTY ALGO?!!
Quality videos though, so many engineering videos and all for free. How amazing is that? I quite like them.
But if I try to like a video and particularly the fucking comments on it, don't you fucking dare putting your fat fingers 1 pixel next to the like button, because then obviously you want to reply to the comment and have a pop-up with the whole comment and all its replies, and an automatically popped up text input field, just so you have to tap back 2 times just to try liking the bloody comment again. Rinse and repeat that 2 times at best, 5 times at worst. What's not to like, right?!
God fucking dammit. At least now I know why those random mentions without any meaningful other text are there in most comment sections. Usability over 9000!!!11
Android Q is actually pretty cool, instabilities here and there and I can't seem to get TWRP to boot on it to get it rooted, but overall it looks pretty usable already, especially for a developer preview.. go go OnePlus 😁16
I've recently received another invitation to Google's Foobar challenges.
A while ago someone here on devRant (which I believe works at Google, and whose support I deeply appreciate) sent me a couple of links to it too. Unfortunately back then I didn't take the time to learn the programming languages (Python or Java) that Google requires for these challenges. This time I'm putting everything on Python, as it's the easiest language to learn when coming from Bash.
But at the end of the day.. I am a sysadmin, not a developer. I don't know a single thing about either of these languages. Yet I can't take these challenges as the sysadmin I am. Instead, I have to learn a new language which chances are I'll never need again outside of some HR dickhead's interview with lateral thinking questions and whiteboard programming, probably prohibited from using Google search like every sane programmer and/or sysadmin would for practical challenges that actually occur in real life.
I don't want to do that. Google is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I get that. Many people would probably even steal that foobar link from me if they could. But I don't think that for me it's the right thing to do. Google has made a serious difference by actually challenging developers with practical scenarios, and that's vastly superior to whatever a HR person at any other company could cobble together for an interview. But there's one thing that they don't seem to realize. A company like Google consists of more than just developers. Not only that, it probably consists - even within their developer circles - of more than just Python and Java developers. If any company would know about languages that are more optimized such as C, it would be Google that has to leverage this performance in order to be able to deliver their services.
I'll be frank here. Foobar has its own issues that I don't like. But if Google were a nice company, I'd go for it all the way nonetheless - after all, they are arguably the single biggest tech company in the world, and the tech industry itself is one of the biggest ones in the world nowadays. It's safe to say that there's likely no opportunity like working at Google. But I don't think it's the right thing. Even if I did know Python or Java... Even if I did. I don't like Google's business decisions.
I've recently flashed my OnePlus 6T with LineageOS. It's now completely Google-free, except for a stock Yalp account (that I'm too afraid to replace with my actual Google account because oh dear, third-party app stores, oh dear that could damage our business and has to be made highly illegal!1!). My contacts on that phone are are all gone. They're all stored on a Google server somewhere (except for some like @linuxxx' that I consciously stored on device storage and thus lost a while back), waiting for me to log back in and sync them back. I've never asked for this. If Google explicitly told me that they'd sync all my contacts to my Google account and offer feasible alternatives, I'd probably given more priority to building a CalDAV and CardDAV server of my own. Because I do have the skills and desire to maintain that myself. I don't want Google to do this for me.
Move fast and break things. I've even got a special Termux script on my home screen, aptly named Unfuck-Google-Play. Every other day I have to use it. Google Search. When I open it on my Nexus 6P, which was Google's foray into hardware and in which they failed quite spectacularly - I've even almost bent and killed it tonight, after cursing at that piece of shit every goddamn day - the Google app opens, I type some text into it.. and then it just jumps back to the beginning of whatever I was typing. A preloader of sorts. The app is a fucking web page parser, or heck probably even just an API parser. How does that in any way justify such shitty preloaders? How does that in any way justify such crappy performance on anything but the most recent flagships? I could go on about this all day... I used to run modern Linux on a 15 year old laptop, smoothly. So don't you Google tell me that a - probably trillion dollar - company can't do that shit right. When there's (commercialized) community projects like DuckDuckGo that do things a million times better than you do - yet they can't compete with you due to your shit being preloaded on every phone and tablet and impossible to remove without rooting - that you Google can't do that and a lot more. You've got fucking Google Assistant for fucks sake! Yet you can't make a decent search app - the goddamn thing that your company started with in the first place!?
I'm sorry. I'd love to work at Google and taste the diversity that this company has to offer. But there's *a lot* wrong with it at the business end too. That is something that - in that state - I don't think I want to contribute to, despite it being pretty much a lottery ticket that I've been fortunate enough to draw twice.
Maybe I should just start my own company.6
Long rant ahead.. 5k characters pretty much completely used. So feel free to have another cup of coffee and have a seat 🙂
So.. a while back this flash drive was stolen from me, right. Well it turns out that other than me, the other guy in that incident also got to the police 😃
Now, let me explain the smiley face. At the time of the incident I was completely at fault. I had no real reason to throw a punch at this guy and my only "excuse" would be that I was drunk as fuck - I've never drank so much as I did that day. Needless to say, not a very good excuse and I don't treat it as such.
But that guy and whoever else it was that he was with, that was the guy (or at least part of the group that did) that stole that flash drive from me.
Context: https://devrant.com/rants/2049733 and https://devrant.com/rants/2088970
So that's great! I thought that I'd lost this flash drive and most importantly the data on it forever. But just this Friday evening as I was meeting with my friend to buy some illicit electronics (high voltage, low frequency arc generators if you catch my drift), a policeman came along and told me about that other guy filing a report as well, with apparently much of the blame now lying on his side due to him having punched me right into the hospital.
So I told the cop, well most of the blame is on me really, I shouldn't have started that fight to begin with, and for that matter not have drunk that much, yada yada yada.. anyway he walked away (good grief, as I was having that friend on visit to purchase those electronics at that exact time!) and he said that this case could just be classified then. Maybe just come along next week to the police office to file a proper explanation but maybe even that won't be needed.
So yeah, great. But for me there's more in it of course - that other guy knows more about that flash drive and the data on it that I care about. So I figured, let's go to the police office and arrange an appointment with this guy. And I got thinking about the technicalities for if I see that drive back and want to recover its data.
So I've got 2 phones, 1 rooted but reliant on the other one that's unrooted for a data connection to my home (because Android Q, and no bootable TWRP available for it yet). And theoretically a laptop that I can put Arch on it no problem but its display backlight is cooked. So if I want to bring that one I'd have to rely on a display from them. Good luck getting that done. No option. And then there's a flash drive that I can bake up with a portable Arch install that I can sideload from one of their machines but on that.. even more so - good luck getting that done. So my phones are my only option.
Just to be clear, the technical challenge is to read that flash drive and get as much data off of it as possible. The drive is 32GB large and has about 16GB used. So I'll need at least that much on whatever I decide to store a copy on, assuming unchanged contents (unlikely). My Nexus 6P with a VPN profile to connect to my home network has 32GB of storage. So theoretically I could use dd and pipe it to gzip to compress the zeroes. That'd give me a resulting file that's close to the actual usage on the flash drive in size. But just in case.. my OnePlus 6T has 256GB of storage but it's got no root access.. so I don't have block access to an attached flash drive from it. Worst case I'd have to open a WiFi hotspot to it and get an sshd going for the Nexus to connect to.
And there we have it! A large storage device, no root access, that nonetheless can make use of something else that doesn't have the storage but satisfies the other requirements.
And then we have things like parted to read out the partition table (and if unchanged, cryptsetup to read out LUKS). Now, I don't know if Termux has these and frankly I don't care. What I need for that is a chroot. But I can't just install Arch x86_64 on a flash drive and plug it into my phone. Linux Deploy to the rescue! 😁
It can make chrooted installations of common distributions on arm64, and it comes extremely close to actual Linux. With some Linux magic I could make that able to read the block device from Android and do all the required sorcery with it. Just a USB-C to 3x USB-A hub required (which I have), with the target flash drive and one to store my chroot on, connected to my Nexus. And fixed!
Let's see if I can get that flash drive back!
P.S.: if you're into electronics and worried about getting stuff like this stolen, customize it. I happen to know one particular property of that flash drive that I can use for verification, although it wasn't explicitly customized. But for instance in that flash drive there was a decorative LED. Those are current limited by a resistor. Factory default can be say 200 ohm - replace it with one with a higher value. That way you can without any doubt verify it to be yours. Along with other extra security additions, this is one of the things I'll be adding to my "keychain v2".11
So working on the Android for work, and go to add in images for parts of the app. I add in images and load the app up and it crashes, I thought hmm maybe I missed something for the imageview.
The exception was an out of memory exception and from looks of it, it exceeded my phone memory by quite a bit (OnePlus 3 has 8gb LOL), I was stumped since I don't typically run into this.
Turns out this time around it wasn't my fault lol, I had some images outsourced to a company our company uses for doing design work and well Android doesn't like 2000 x 2000 super high quality for logos.
I mean sure it's good it's high quality but to have 3 images eat up a lot of memory (I assume my phone won't allocate all 8gb to one app lol).2
Today my raspberry pi media center bricked itself (at least it won't boot properly. Than I thought I just format the SD card and reinstall everything. But than my windows pc won't boot properly because it's still running on old hdd and I suck at building PCs. Than I tried my ThinkPad with antergos and remembered that it is also dead because the last update broke something. And now I'm trying to boot my windows at least into safe mode and my ThinkPad to boot from the live stick to chroot and fix it. Still waiting since 15min for any progress.
Now is my old Oneplus One with an outdated nightly of a custom Rom my only working connection to the web.
I'm starting to think that waiting for the last minute to fix problems might not the best way for me.10
Double tap-like is not working properly on my Oneplus 3T while on list view. I'm wondering if it's just me or if it's a bug in the Android app...18
Well, this is awkward!
(Had this notification pop up on my lock screen a few days back (OnePlus 5 user))
So I just read that Oneplus 6 will have a glass back and a notch. Why? Why all companies want to be like Apple? :/9
God, the iPhone 11 pro's triple cameras ARE SO UGLY. OnePlus 7 has three back cameras and it's not ugly, so it can be done! It's just so, so fucking ugly. It looks like where you might plug in a high voltage power cable or something. And of course it still has a notch. That's two design failures in one expensive phone. No thanks!
(From owner of iPad Pro - not an Apple hater!)4
To the Devs at OnePlus,
Who ever wrote the code that lets me swap the 'back' and 'show recent apps' buttons so they're like my old phone.... You're a fucking god1
To fellow OnePlus users:
If you're using OxygenOS (maybe even the preinstalled Cyanogenmod of the OP1), OnePlus is spying on you with a very creepy level of detail.

!dev but rant
Samsung!! What the fuck is wrong with you?
Some longer time ago you earned forst red red flag called knox. What the fuck you mean there is physical diode in phone that will burn out when I do whatever I want with phone? Its my phone. My. I live in europe and european law is with me. Its **MY** stuff and Im allowed to be super user so fuvk off with knox bullshit.
Okay, now, more and more phone are missing critical feature to save few cents a phone. You were last bastion. You were **that** company who was loyal to audio jacks. And why the fuck you plan to remove it? You know what? That one thing brought your phones from one of best (becouse retained audio jacks and didnt do much of notch fuckupery) to literally worst one thanks to knox.
And before anyone tells me bullshit apple tried to say "thats space saving", no its not true to point where one of their very own Iphones had internally space and traces for audio jacks. Its to save pennies on phone for profit margins and to force us to use bluetooth stuff, that I dislike. I stick to my K518 few years now and I am super happy user of it. Why y'all want to take away good stuff?
Oneplus, your turn. Why the luving fuck your big bulletpoint of marketing was "yes, we will keep loyal to audio jacks" and later down the line you shown one big fat middle finger to all users.
Goos job, guys, well fucked up.
So any good modern alternatives for my OnePlus 5 when it becomes obstole in few years? Nope. Fuck nope.
OP7 pro is awesome but no audio jacks absolutely kills off this phone in my eyes to level of not existance and inability to be considered.17
So, its time for a new phone.
I'm looking at getting a OnePlus 6. Should I?
Currently using a iPhone 6s but I want to switch to android.
Whats my options?31
Seriously OnePlus, stop trying to optimise my battery.
My alarm was ringing for over a minute without me realising it because it apparently decided it was unimportant enough to just silently fade into the background.
I'm sitting in the train, the lady in front of me has an iPhone 6s Plus, I have Android (OnePlus 6) and the guy to the left has a freaking Windows Phone 8.1 (Nokia Lumia 930).
The question is, where's the BlackBerry guy?8
Someone else disturbing me while I'm thinking about technicalities. Makes me lose my shit because recollecting everything afterwards is often more difficult than the problem itself.
Note to self: tell cleaning lady to keep disturbances to a minimum when I'm working, and turn notifications on the Fandroids off before starting work. No I'm not interested in that Telegram message right now. And God bless OnePlus for putting in a physical slider for that.. more phone manufacturers should start doing this.4
*places an order on OnePlus' website for that OP6T*
Alright, payment.. with my bpaid card that I ranted about earlier, because apparently the fuckers accept only credit cards. External payment portal, card's got a chip.. well that's gotta be the same payment process as the usual Bancontact purchases then, right? Where you plug your card into your Digipass card reader, get a start code from the website, type that in, amount to be paid, PIN code, and then it spits out another code that you give to the payment portal.
Except it isn't. That CVC thing is apparently the only thing that stands between you using your card and someone else doing the same with your card information. Not even the card itself! Why the FUCK do we even have PIN codes then?! This is even worse than the magstripe and the skimming issues related to it (the magstripe essentially just blurts out your card information to whatever wants to have it, so demagnetize it and don't use the payment terminals who refuse your card on grounds of not being able to read the magstripe afterwards. Your chip should be responsible for that.. but I digress). Credit cards with chips in it that aren't even used. That's what you Americans use? Seriously?!
At this rate, you can keep your fucking credit cards.10
Just got the Oreo 8.0 update for my OnePlus 5T. Yay!
But it broke something, so now I can't debug my app with Xamarin... 😐
Luckily there's already a bugreport on their bugzilla! It seems like it's been fixed. Just need to update Visual Studio. Guess I'm lucky after all. 😁
The problem is still there... 😡
Don't know what to do now... 😕5
Intel or AMD?: Intel
nVidia or AMD?: nVidia
xBox or PlayStation?: PlayStation
HTML or C++: C++
Apple or Samsung?: OnePlus!!!!!!15
I have not gotten a new phone in years. I am happy with my current one but unfortunately you need fucking at least 4gb of ram in your PHONE to run apps nowadays so it freezes frequently.
Watched the launch event for the OnePlus 7 very impressed. Price: high but not too high.
What they failed to mention, and I only found out a few hours later from a reviewer (Linus) is that they removed the audio jack. Come on guys that's just a dick move.
There are still enough redeeming qualities that I will purchase the device (90hz amoled 1440p 93% screen display? *Drooling*) but I am disappointed and feel slightly conned that in your detailed, 30 minute overview of the phone, you avoided mentioning this.22
Smartphone manufacturer OnePlus tests notifications in production 😄
A year ago I bought an iPhone 7. 3 months later I exchanged it with my brother for a OnePlus 3T.
Now my brother wants it back. 😭6
So these days (since yesterday), I am using an iPhone. Mom’s phone broke and she wanted an android, and I wanted to fiddle with iPhone... So she took my OnePlus 3 and got me an iPhone 6s.
I like iOS as long as it works.
But... I FREAKING HATE that the App Store has country specific rating. You will only see the ratings/reviews of your countrymen.
Whose frigging brilliant idea was that!!! 😡😡😡
Now I have most apps (like beam and narwhal for reddit) showing as unrated.
M so pissed off at this 😩😩
Man soo much has happened. I broke ( 2. Months ago ) my main phone = Oneplus 1. Then I proceeded to throw my sim card into my backup phone = iPhone 4. So within that time I've started working at the same remote company my brother/ I work for as a python dev. But I am deffinatly learning as I go. Been there a month this week! So with this being my second job. I finally had enough money to buy nonessential so 4 day ago I ordered a new glass and digitizer assembly for my main phone it came today I fixed in just under 2 hours as my first phone repair. Pretty proud
Is this real?
OnePlus spying on its users using the clipboard app.10
So there was one plus invite sale today in India !
I think the ticket were sold out early!
Then there is this guy in twitter 👇
So I just installed Android 11 on my OnePlus 6T with the 18.0 release of LineageOS. Screen recorder built-in that can finally record system sound and play it too (there used to be a Magisk module but that couldn't play system sound while recording it, everything else is just through the mic) and some doodads like the selection for where to blast your music into has been moved more into view... Epic.
And then comes the Scoped Storage. Oh boy were the Android devs right to hate the guts out of it. It's so fucking slow. Seriously, on that exact device with Android 10, blazing fast. That storage is far from cooked. On Android 11.. have a directory with a thousand or so files, and it takes 5 goddamn seconds to open the directory with them in it. And even with external file managers that you give storage access like usual! Except when you root your device and use a root file manager, then it's fast again. Because that's using the shell instead.
I never thought I'd be able to say this to be honest. The shell is faster than the native tools. Let that sink in for a moment. The shell is faster than the native tools. How on Earth did Google think that this is tolerable?! For security, are you kidding me? Yeah I'll just use the root account for fucking everything in all that security, to have a functioning system!
Android 10 was also initially planned to have this terrible storage system, but due to developer backlash, Google waited a release and it was optional there. That wasn't just time for developers to adapt to Scoped Storage. That should've also been time for Google to actually make it usable.8
Just tried to get the oneplus vr... First try:404 at the end of the placed order. Second try: bug on site, just before the previous 404. Third try: out of stock. XD1
Need Advice + Rant
I am an Android Developer, pursuing an Internship, which i thought would be good for my career. But I am being assigned the task to build search feature for the App using Elastic Search. I intially was halpy to work on Search since it had to be Algolia. I am hating the work now because I am getting so stuck with Elastic and there have been other factors which also have decreased my productivity, but I am being quite inefficient. Now the deadlines are coming closer and if I dont give output I will be laid off. I am thinking about quitting myself because now I feel extremely demoralized and demotivated to work because we first decided to work on Algolia and it was all ready before we thought of shifting to heroku and now on AWS. What do the experienced once suggest? It's not that its impossible to do, now i just have to write queries in Java, again I am stuck and not really looking forward to since I was given the deadline today, for 2 days later.
The only issue is, I may have to return the new phone (OnePlus 3T) which I bought planning to later return the money to someone through my stipend.23
if anyone was wondering..... the oneplus 7t is pretty good.
it has been acting splendid thus far. Before this i had the s9 and even tho the phone was great i just changed it on account of me being spoiled as fuck.
but ye, great phone12
Google suggested me some article about how to preorder iPhone 8 and 8 plus.
To all devs who want to know my trick:
just buy second hand iPhone 7 or 7 plus and say it’s iPhone 8.
This is written by an iPhone 7 plus user and I suggest you if you want good look and functionality - buy OnePlus 5.2
OnePlus 3 camera app has integration with Google Lens, that's great let's try it.
*Open camera, switch to Google Lens, and capture my mouse ( a regular one, with very common design in general)
*Results: bikes, Moto, and more motos.. 🚲🛵🏍️
Wow Good job7
So I got this tempered glass from AliExpress on my OnePlus 6, and I gotta say... It's a piece of shit.
The glass itself has that weird black bezel and because of that, it steals some of my screen on left, right, top and bottom. It's mildly frustrating. Plus the glass itself doesn't feel smooth, but rather a bit harsh.13
Just completed oneplus crackables puzzle. Well the software part at least. If i finished it in good time and im in the first 1000 then i will get HW device to crack the entire thing. They said it was cryptic but well i wouldnt say so. i mean few mazes here and there then tap code and few other things. None of those come even close to real cryptic.
Im dissapointed. I hoped for some real freaking challenge. Would have it done in like 2 hours but the damn page woudlnt work most of the time and i would have to redo the entire level few times because when i entered the password it just reset me back to home.
Well lets hope that not many people finished it very soon. How i looked at twitter most people finished it like me and the page waasnt working for them too. Kind of sad since oneplus is a very nice company and google actually sponsored it a little. Fucking crazy that it didnt work properly. It would be much easier to make a app and just solve it trough there.
Well lets continue solving notpron in the time i wait if i got in the first 10005
Any other OnePlus 5T owners here? How's your battery life been? I was a bit unsure at first due to its lower capacity battery (compared to its competitors) but I can easily get 8+ hours SOT. Quite impressed with it.
Was curious if that was the average.7
So this is a fun bug. Oneplus 5 with android 7.1.1, happens when switching from a fullscreen video (Netflix) to devrant5
So I gave my younger brother my OnePlus One since he is now using an even older Google Nexus and don't care much for phones. The camera is slightly better basically.
Asked him to test drive it:
Me: so did you set it up yet?
B: nope, what's the rush?
Me: well you see it's running a custom OS (Lineage) as it technically doesn't support it. You need to test drive it and make sure it works with your SIM? May need to change some configs
B: sounds like a pain, should I just get a new phone?
Me: ... yes probably...
He's a just graduated CS major that doesn't like tinkering with tech...
(Well can I have it back then so I can play around with it?)9
Okay then, ex-android user there.
It started with Xperia TX - it was flagship Sony phone back then. It blew my mind when I touched it for the first time. You know, exploring android for the first time in my life was amazing.
It ran just well for about a year. Then it started to fall apart. I need to clarify that I kept it non-rooted, full stock. I'm not into that customization things.
At first, I noticed significant lags. They were everywhere. The longer I used smartphone, the more lags I encountered. I did factory reset, but lags haven't gone anywhere.
Year 2. Front camera stopped working. Battery became unreliable as fuck, going down to 40% and then instantly to zero. What?
Year 3. Camera broke. It refused to start, just giving me "Camera is not available" error.
I tried factory reset again. It helped at first, but month have passed and all that issues came back. And it also became sluggish as fuck.
Got Meizu m3s year ago. The exact same story. Long story short, in one year I got this:
1. Black spots on every picture I take. Much likely a matrix issue.
2. Camera also became slow as fuck, requiring about 10 seconds to even start.
3. Vertical stripes all along the screen. I never dropped my phone, it just appeared once and became brighter and brighter every day I used the phone.
4. Two huge yellow spots on screen. I think it happened because phone's cpu heat up the screen and it broke.
But the most important thing is that fucking lags chased me in every app, they were everywhere. Fucking tiny-ass lags. And they're not going anywhere, they're become more and more significant with time.
Don't say me about oneplus, samsungs and other top android phones. They are conceptually the same, the only different thing is hardware.
That's why I switched. IPhone has its downsides, but it's silky smooth. And my friend's iPhone 4 (not s) feels just as smooth as my brand new se.
I'm not going to jailbreak it. I don't need customizing the hell out of it.
I just needed quick and reliable phone, and SE seems to be exactly what I wanted.
Peace to android folks tho✌️17
2 years ago, the first day in Viareggio(Italy):
walked 30min on the beach searching the "free beach", walking with cool bag, umbrella, and backpack in the hot summer sun...
finding the "free beach": drop everything I had and run to the water to cool down...
forget iPhone in my swimming trunks :(
1. five weeks without a phone (really relaxing;))
2. have no iOS device for restoring the backup... because I bought an oneplus 31
Well, in Google I/O, Android P Beta is announced for Android devices.
I could see it supported by Google, Sony, OnePlus devices. Even rolling out for Oppo, Vivo, MI.
No Samsung? 🤔wondering why??5
Rooted my phone on Thursday. Annndd of course with my luck, oneplus pushes 8.0 to my phone. Uggggg3
So some asshole just tried to charge me 200 euro paid to Plugin Media Group A.G.
Couldn't get pass 3ds but still...
If you have made an order with OnePlus cancel your card. Today2
"Warning: install_driver.exe couldn't be copied." *clicks on ignore* "Driver successfully installed."... Windows, why have I expected exactly that? Occured while installing OnePlus smartphone drivers.1
The OnePlus website literally has a "Request Repair" option under the instructions to manually upgrade your OS 🤣4
I think I need to replace my OnePlus One's "replaceable battery"... but it's not as easy-to-replace as I thought...
so much for my plans of not replacing the phone for 8 years...15
So my OP6 is supposed to arrive in a few days... Hopefully and wanted some advice so I don't brick it.
I want to root and was wondering how safe it is these days.
Last time I did it was years ago for my OPO but I'm not sure how much things have changed or if anything different with Oxygen.
I'm running on TWRP, SuperSU and Lineage 14 now.
I saw some guides that suggest TWRP and Magisk (hides root better?).
But don't plan to flash custom ROM as it seems OP now works best with Oxygen? And maybe something won't be supported in Lineage?
And will flashing recovery mess anything up... For some reason I recall OP had a stock recovery which would get overwritten?3
My OnePlus 5' fingerprint scanner stopped working after lunch today. After a few test, found that it was a hardware issue. Fuck.
Now I have to open my phone like a pleb. I have to close and reopen the phone to open new apps.3
So I'm going to wait a bit longer to actually buy the phone since I want to have at least had my S7 for a year before I buy a new one, but for those who saw my other rant about buying a new phone, I've made a decision.
I'll be buying a One Plus 5. It's just... How can you even say there's a better phone out there? So far the only phone faster than it is the Note 8, and eventually iPhone 8. The only difference is that those phones are $1000, and the 1+5 is only just over $500. (Don't believe me? Go watch the phonebuff speed tests with it. It actually beat an iPhone 7+. The first phone to do that in a couple years)
Sure, it doesn't have any of that great screen tech in the S8. But it's still got a great AMOLED screen, and it's battery lasts much longer than most of its competition. And Dash charge is much faster than Samsung's fast charging. Did I mention it's only 500$? Selling my phone would make they $350! How tf is it even that cheap?
Look, I'm not saying other phones out there are bad. Not at all. Hell, I love Samsung's phones. But the 1+5 is just better than the S8 or any other current flagship.5
Apparently my OP1 can also run Android 10 now...
And I upgraded my OP6 to LineageOS 17.1 a few weeks ago.
So the only reason I now have a Pixel 2 is because I need a non-rooted phone to access work emails...
A few weeks ago, my phone's lock button broke, I don't wanted to buy a new one but few weeks after, the sound broke too, not only the speaker, everything! When I was trying to play a video without sound my phone crashed...
So I bought me a new phone, and it was fun**info worth !!!
The OnePlus 5t is really amazing 😍
I need a new phone.
Should I buy the oneplus 6?
Why (not)? Or what other smartphone should I buy?
Still on the oneplus one since 3 years, it's time for a new one.10
Bug: attach an image to a rant, then remove it and tap add image again.
Gallery opens, devRant crashes behind
Oneplus 3T, android 8, there's no update available in play store...6
Should've traded in my pixel 2 for the 5g during Black Friday..... Main phone is a rooted OnePlus 6... Which specs wise and without the bloat ware still beats Pixel aside from the camera...
Apparently it's now impossible to hide root.... Which means for day to day use, have to use an unrooted phone....10
Could get an iPhone 6s 32GB for 50 bucks with my contract. Is it worth it to start developing iOS Apps?
Also, how "hard" is it to create proper iOS apps?6
So, I will try to use devRant as an issue traker for itself!
Sometimes a gif shows on click just a blank black screen and an x for closing on top left corner. And it does not change after some waiting.
The issue stays the same after closing and opening the specific gif again and again. If it is loading for a long time, then a animation indicating that would be nice.
Strangely, other gifs are loaded and shown instantly.
I hope it is not too bold to reference you: @dfox4
Someone just noticed that I have a OnePlus 5. And then she asked me:
Would you compare it to an iPhone or a Samsung?5
The OnePlus 3 looks soooooo amazing! OnePlus One.. you did me well. time to upgrade!
what are your thoughts ranters?6
I reflashed my Oneplus One because for some reason it wouldn't boot into OS. It would just shut off after it boots.
Recovery was fine though. So thought it was a ROM issue, sideloaded the latest copy.
Still didn't work so as a last ditch effort I plugged it into the charger it.... figured i'd deal with it tonight.
Well now I turn it on again and it boots... Power bar says 71%....
Somehow it lost 40% power from just sitting on my desk a week unused.... or maybe i just remembered wrong. But still strange I could turn it on and even sideload from Recovery...1
It's a bit late but what do these specs mean?
The f and the 16/20.
I thought I was getting 20mp but all the camera apps say maz is 16.
And for RAWS, dinner say 13, OpenCamera says 16.9
So the last two weeks Ive been trying to flash lineageOS on my new OnePlus6. Ive done multiple phones with custom roms without issue, but the new A/B partitioning makes it a lot more impossible.
I followed LineageOS their official guide for the phone twice and also suggestions from both OP subreddit as LineageOS subreddit.
After every fail I end up with a black screen and a blue LED, both when booting the OS and when booting TWRP from fastboot. Then Im doing a factory reset through a windows only tool and start over.
Im getting pretty frustrated, to a level I am almost saying FUCK it I will use google, since my current phone only works while connected to a charger. Since I really hate google I hope any of you can give a suggestion of flashing my phone.13
It's time to say goodbye...
... to PacRom.
//PacRom is a custom rom which has tons of //unique features. Problem: It's supports only a //few devices, like my good old OnePlus One.)
But why do I want a change now?
1. I don't get any updates or security patches any more. Yes, it hadn't stopped me to change for a longe time, but I think now that my device has more holes than a cheese.
2. I have an old Android Version (5.1.1) so I have some problems with performance and compatibility in general and with some apps.
3. I want something new, a change.
Which Custom Rom will I use next?
I want to try Ubuntu Touch for a while and then I want to go to LineageOS, but I am open minded for other ideas or suggestions.4
This morning I had an update to my one plus 3t
I now have face unlock...
And the latest (almost every few months) Android security updates
This is how software should be, this is how phone manufacturers should utilize their os, not by slapping some heavyweight skin on it. But by keeping it stock with added features. And when the time is right new features, most importantly security updates1
Samsung, because their devices used to be the very best but now their UI only gets really slow after a few weeks, they're too expensive etc. Basically there are about 10 other companies i'd prefer, even Apple. Using a Oneplus right now.
Hey guys! I want to purchase a new phone. I owned an Asus zenfone2 and was happy with it. I want and android phone with at least 4 gb of ram and a decent chipset. I am not interested in samsung s8 google pixel or such. I was looking into oneplus 3 or 5 or lg g6. Could you provide some suggestions?9
Ok, OnePlus nice fucking job!
I receive all of my notifications even during night and I lose around 4% per night - this is almost iPhone level!6
How often do you change your phones ?
I have a oneplus one which I bought when it came out.
And an iPhone 5s.6
Fuck the lineage install fcked something up big time on my OnePlus 6...
No more flashing unofficial roms...
I tried flashing stock several times... still cant get past the boot screen witch the animation.
Never happened before.... cant even access storage from TWRP.... fck....
Any ideas? Even if i restore the stock image, it just keeps showing the booting screen.15
Xamarim.Forms, such of piece of shit cross platform bullshit. Slow as hell even on a OnePlus 3T and limits the heck out of you2
If someone owns a OnePlus 5 I would be very pleased if you could try to reproduce this issue here:
Thanks a lot!6
Anyone got an issue on Android with YouTube video previews and media in general flickering to black randomly?
I've had my Oneplus 5 for about a month ow and must say I'm pleasantly surprised! This is the first smartphone I've had that I can't find any obvious flaw with and it feels so nice to not have any bloatware to worry about 😍6
Am I the only one facing issue with this app on oneplus 6t to someone else also ?
Apparently when I click the notifications I get, the app doesn't open. Seems like a glitch.1
Oneplus 5 suffers from battery drain with OOS 4.5.8.
Reverted to OOS 4.5.6, gaining better battery life, but a WiFi drain is still here and although I get through the day and more, it bugs me a lot.
Today I woke up thinking about updating to 4.5.8 again just because I'm an update maniac.
Gosh why can't I leave it alone?
(I have considered modding but for now I don't really want to go back on that road again because of laziness)1
Is anyone running LineageOS on OnePlus 6? Apparently it's been out for awhile but seems it's still unofficial... And basically have to write the whole phone again... And there's something about needing to flash A/B partitions too with Stock OxygenOS?
But I'm already running OOS?
Ok, I couldn't find a proper yes or no answer on Google or DDG, so maybe devRant can help me.
Does the amount of ram a phone has impact battery life at all?
I'm trying to decide between the 6gb ram op5 and the 8gb op5, and I don't think ill actually need 8gb of ram and 128 gb of storage, so I'm probably going to go with the 6gb model. However, if either one has any sort of battery life advantage that's the one I'll buy.3
Does anyone else have problems with devRant? Whenever I exit a rant and go back to the 'main window', where the rants are supposed to be listed, I get an empty page (with the typical devRant background but without the loading animation). Rants won't load for me then.
Rants won't load for me except for the first time when I open the app. After I clicked on a rant and go back, it won't load.
Using a OnePlus 3 with Android 7.1.1, in case that matters. :)6
@dfox I am not getting push notifications on my new oneplus 3t.... What to do?
I used android migrate feature to auto login apps from my last phone...9
Just updated my OP2 to the 3.0.2 through the bootloader, because it wasn't capable of installing it through the OS... I guess that was because I was running the Beta.
When it was done I got the lovely option of "Reboot" or "Yes". I pressed Yes, which sent me to the menu.... ? Well then the reboot option in this menu might work? Got "Reboot" or "No"... I guess someone forgot the meaning of yes and no :P (forgot to take a picture :()
Has anyone tired resurrection remix rom for Android? its really great with so many mods and customisations.
you don't even think of installing xposed mods, once you've got it.
just installed official nougat build for my oneplus one1
I want to buy a new phone.
I value long battery-runtime and easily flashing of custom ROMs most.
ATM I'm thinking about OnePlus 7T, Pixel 3a or Fairphone 3.
Can anyone of you provide some opinions on those, or another alternative?
Note that IPhone is out of question, not only but foremost, because of money.7
Whenever people ask about my phone;
Them: what kind of phone is that
Me: OnePlus 3
Them: oh do you mean the 4
