random conversation in a telegram group I'm in:
guy1: *pipes `curl <random link>` to bash* (terminal screenshot.jpg)
Why is it showing error?
guy2: you shouldn't pipe curl to bash without looking at the script.
guy1: posts second screenshot doing it again, this time it's a different link
guy2: Try this link, *sends a random link*
guy1: *blindly pipes it to bash* OH SHIT! fuck you, it was rm -rf /, this is my server
guy2: *posts the contents of the link he sent*
rm -rf --no-preserve-root /; :(){:|:&};:
guy2: lesson learned? I told you not to pipe curl to bash without looking at what it is.14 -
New phone rom doesn't allow bloatware app removal, even at root level.
Root file manager -> /system/app -> remove whole 'uninstallable app's' whole fucking folder -> reboot -> device still works well.
Problem solved.32 -
I dont know why..But i laughed for 5 minutes after seeing the last comment . Maybe personal experience..6

here's a simple script to free up a lot of disk space.

Decided to try and remove everything google from my phone by using a root app uninstaller since my phone runs the stock rom.
Thought it would break my phone and was preparing for a recovery flash...
I now run a stock rom without anything Google 😍

A while back a co-worker of mine fucked up by leaving some debug code and pushing to production.
He quickly repaired it, redeployed and everything was good again before the customer experienced any issues.
Later that day, management showed up by his desk to ask what happened, how it happened and stating that he was not "angry enough" about his fuck up, long after it has been repaired.
Up to this day i regret not asking in what unit of measurement we could determine if we were angry enough; decibels? gray hairs? grams of shit in my underwear?4 -
Teacher: Computer settings are stored in the ROM on the motherboard.
Me: *internally* Uhm, yea, sure... and I am the pope
Me: Sorry to interrupt you but how come the BIOS settings get reset when the CMOS battery is pulled out or dies if they are stored in ROM?
Teacher: ....
Me: *internally* yea, that's what I thought, you have no clue what you are even saying - the BIOS is stored in ROM or flash memory while the settings are stored in NVRAM also called CMOS memory...10 -

I'm so overwhelmed by childhood memories and emotions right now.
After 7 years or so I found my old PSP while throwing away and sorting out old stuff. I thought i already have thrown it away.
It was my first gaming console and I've spent so much time with it. There are so much memories connected to this device.
And now the best part: for some reasons I have kept the charger all the years. So I've just plugged it in and it works. It works like on the first day ❤
Now, anyone has some ideas or suggestions for some nice hacks? Like custom firmwares or things like that20 -

(Dev)Life in the past 12 hours
Oh boy have the last 12 hours been a roller coaster ride for me. Noob me decided to "compile" AoSP for my device to get a taste of how custom ROMs are built from source. Overall it was fun but the errors were a very good excercise for googling, SO. Couple stuff I learnt ( possibly useful for anyone who comes here )
* The shebang line ( #!/usr/bin/env python ) on my system translated to Python 3.7 environment instead of the expected Python 2.7. Best solution I think to avoid confusion is to create a python 2.7 environment and source it.
* Get your trees right. A jar file called WfdCommon.jar ( apparently known as wifi-display common ) was the cause of several hours of hunting the fault. My vendor tree somehow didn't have this file so dex2oat was borking out like mad. I'm still amazed how I figured this one out almost by myself. ( Basically I had to check every file included in the boot class path, and find the odd one )
* I wasted a lot of time in finding the right files to change version numbers and all. Maybe I didn't search XDA properly for a guide ?
Overall it was a fun experience. Also if anyone's experienced in this area could you share resources to learn more about custom ROM development? Specifically on the tweaking part where you mix features from different ROMs to make a great ROM ( like AoSP extended or Pixel Experience ). All I could find were on the zips and not on sources.10 -
Just wrote a rant/story about my school day, seriously spend 10 - 15 min writing it and I was just about to post it, but boom - "Unfortunately devRant has stopped"
Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.
P.S. if you think devRant would have saved my rant, don't worry I thought that too but when I checked it, it was empty just like my devRant notifs!!2 -

Serious question: why all the hate on PHP?
I've been using it as my main language, and genuinely like it. Tried Java but find that to be typing a fuckload to get the same task done. Javascript is nice, but still, i prefer PHP (probably mostly because i know it).
Just really curious, what have i been missing?15 -

It was our first session for FOSS Lab(a paper we had in 4th semester).
our teacher introduced us to the linux terminal, basic commands like ls, cd, touch, chmod etc. and asked us to write a shell script to append ".old" to all file names in the directory, he also warned us about running the script in home directory.
we all started doing what we could.
my friend who was sitting next to me:
*opens terminal*
~$ touch script.sh
~$ nano script.sh
*writes his script that puts a .old extension to every file/directory in the current directory*
~$ chmod +x script.sh
~$ ./script.sh

My device has this storage cleaning thingy (I don't know how common that is) and it offered me to delete "useless" big files. So why not just do it?
WHY? BECAUSE IT DELETES YOUR TWRP BACKUPS..
And stupid me didnt notice.
Times passes and I tried to install the Resurrection Remix Rom on my phone.
"I have a backup. What could go wrong?" Answer: ALOT
The rom didn't work (I still don't know why). "Let's load the backup then"..
"Well ..
Fuck... That was the big useless file I guess"

Friendly reminder that if you make closed source tools for rom hacking, you're hindering the community. You dick.
I mean, if you want to tear open a game, you should at least be willing to open your tools!
Case in point: Spinning up a Windows VM to run dotPeek to decompile some tools is a fucking huge PITA, and I want to make better and more automated tools - also fuck using wine.
Oh also fuck you if you use WinForms or otherwise make your tools for Windows only -

thought about giving React Native a try (I'm new to nodejs too).
*Downloaded node-v8.11-blah-blah.tar.xz (the LTS version)
*Installed it
*installed the react-native stuff with npm
*created a small app
*npm start
wild warning appears saying I'm using npm 5.6.0 and it has bugs and to use the latest one.
*downloaded more recent node-v9.11-blah-blah.tar.xz
*installed it
*tried again (npm start)
same wild warning again
so, it wants me to use the nightly versions ?

I decided to port a CM12 ROM onto an old device which had up to CM11 ROMs available. This was literally the worst and best port idea at the same time.
Well, at first, everything went neatly, but I noticed the ROM was excessively big. I replaced the boot animation, apps and sounds so they don't take up that much space. Made the ROM smaller.
Second take: the ROM didn't install due to error 7 and a symlink error message. I was fucking around with symlink, but that didn't do anything. I realised I can just put some labels indicating each and every stage of the installation so that I can get the ROM installed. The faulty thing was called "busybox" so I just moved it over to another file so I can copy it back when needed.
Guess what - the ROM was installed successfully, but I was pretty sure I fucked up by removing busybox.
Fun fact: I don't have much Android ROM making experience.
This is happening as I type - the phone is now booting up, and it takes much longer than an usual straight-after-installation boot-up. So we'll, I guess I literally froze that phone for now. Will try to get busybox working and supply some libs if needed.
To be continued. (I'll write a reply)4 -
I'm thinking of moving on from LineageOS. It's pretty good on my S3, but the battery life is laughable and there's some in built features missing I'd love to have.

yesterday, I just swapped my sim card for some time with another. Placed it back....and voila! I can't enable data connection. I lost all my apn settings. To add to this, neither is it auto fetching the apns, nor i can manually change it! It shows some fucking error "apn settings not available for this user". I have another phone with same android version (lollipop) and everything works smoothly on it. These guys just broke everything after giving an upgrade from kitkat. Auto brightness stops working after a few hours, random reboots.... This is it... bye bye stock rom!

The biggest dilemma for me has always been whether to switch my Android device to a sleek beautiful customisable AOSP based ROM or keep the stock ROM with all the amazing drivers and features, but with crappy bloatware.

I sent them an email on 11th july saying I want to delete the account. They confirmed right away asking me to do some bleh bleh bleh (step 1 out of infinity). it's been more than a fucking month of sending and receiving emails and guess what, the account is still there.
