Almost all fellow programmers I've met have either wanted to be my boyfriend, thought I was a fake geek girl, or were too shy/intimidated to talk to me. (or a combination.)

devRant is the only place I've actually met friendly developers.

Shittiest rant of the week. Winter isn't the happiest time of the year to begin with, and now you're reminding 40k devs that they have no friends.

I met my girlfriend due to code.

There were these free courses for competitive programming as a preparation for the informatics olympiad and we got along and made weird programs and had a great time. Most of the other people there were much younger than us, and in the actual finals she ended up beating me by quite a bit, yet she still dares to say I am a better programmer.

It's been almost a year since then. Wow

A recruiter just invited me to Christmas dinner at her home to "discuss some business opportunities", so there's that.

What is a friend?

This was during my 3rd semester when I was outside my dorm room finishing my Java assignment. Suddenly this kitty jumped from nowhere and sat near my laptop seeing those buggy Java codes. Then I started to pet him as he sat on my keypad. After this incident, he came outside my dorm room every other night waiting for me to pet him. He was one good friend that I got during that semester. I really miss him now.

I befriended a much-older dev who's notoriously known for cursing in source code comments.

His best comment was F.I.S.H., which is his cursing acronym for "fucking incredible shitty hack"

It's a funny story. When at the gym I usually wear t-shirts with tech companies logos, from companies I've worked at. This guy comes to me and asks if I'm a programmer. Turns out he's also a programmer and we began chatting every time we were at the gym at the same time. Some months later he joined the company I work at and we're now colleagues. He's a pretty cool dude.

My wife. She's also my best friend.

Back then, when we were just flirting, I helped her and her friends(they were all medicine students) with their programming courses which included sql and html. I guess that help led us the way we're here now.

I haven't met many people through programming but I've met many friends through devRant but certainly also through being a Linux (server) enthusiast.

At study I found some good Linux guys and now through devRant I've gotten some awesome linuxers and privacy/security like minded people who I definitely see as great friends!

Also I find it awesome that I can actually teach people stuffs that I love researching about/ doing myself!

A few years ago I started a profile on a social media app to share programming endeavors and humor.

After a year or so I became somewhat close with the ~20 subscribers out of my ~1000 that would always comment on my posts. We started a programming group chat and all hung out there, sharing stories, posting random pics, etc.

When I was interviewing with my current company, I shared all the details with the group and kept them up to date while they cheered me on and wished me luck. Once I got my offer everyone was ecstatic.

One friend in the chat remembered my company has an office in NYC, where they live, and asked if I could arrange a tour. I asked around and it seemed like it wouldn't work out, but just a few weeks later I was sent to the NYC office to collaborate with another team for a few weeks.
I let my friend know I would be in town, and when the time came - we met up, toured the NYC office, ate really good tacos, and enjoyed the city.

10/10 would friend again.

My 4th semester of college, I had a class about Software Engineering, the teacher started involving me in external projects, he actually taught me almost everything I know, now we work for the same company and he is my mentor and one of my dearest friends

I learnt my college junior some coding and development, and we became best friends.

Later I asked her out, and now we are not talking after that. 😅

Met him in a national robotic competition 3 years back.
Somehow, we exchanged numbers and nowadays we talk often whenever we get time (considering our busy life and timezone difference)

About me, I left robotics(to be specific embedded) and got a job and working on backend these days.

Though, it's great talking to him and getting to know how the education goes there and his new works.

He also has a beautiful love story(not yet completed) which is another fun part to listen from him.

Best girl i've met.

I attended a CMS Conference last month(I don't use a CMS, i'm just interested with the topics about DevOps and UI/UX). I met this pretty lady ( I find her cute and awesome.) who's one of the speaker, she talked about design principles and applying it to BEM with SASS. After the talk, i asked her some questions about her dev't workflow like what tools she used and some best practices. Our conversation went well and exchange some of our knowledge and ideas also i introduced her to devrant (She's a wordpress user, i showed to her how the community hates WP, idk if she registered). After her talked we separated ways and ended seeing again after the conference as she's looking for a cab going to a mall (Same directions where i'm heading to), We talked again and decided to have dinner together. I felt like she's the best girl i met as she's into TV shows i like (Silicon Valley and Mr Robot). We added ourselves in FB and saying goodbye to each other. After a week or two, i just found out that she already into a relationship and it broke my heart.

I guess im back to the start, but i'm happy that i made a new friend.

Was invited to work on a new startup which had 2 founders and 3 devs including me.
Within 2 years, founders started fighting related to equity and stuff. Those mfs Finally dissolved the company.

We 3 became jobless but continued as a team and with the contacts we got from previous startup we started working on projects outsourced by other companies.

I was the designer, and the other one a passionate android and ios dev, last one was a pro php, node.js dev. We were super productive and fast. Worked together alot until one of us got a really good job in a company.
We still work on some crazy projects, discuss random shit, help each other with their projects whenever we meet on weekends.

Surprisingly frequently in my city, a few weeks ago for example I was in the pub discussing reactjs with a friend of mine from uni and a random bloke cut in with "there was nothing wrong with jquery" (he had a massive grin on his face, so he knew what he said). But we're still friends as i never told or to confess my feelings to her as my tasks and bugfix i my priority, lol! Well, this goes back a few years to when I first started to program in Minecraft. I had an idea of developing Gun Game in Minecraft before any of these big servers had created them, so I had a few questions and asked it on Bukkit forums. So he responded to my questions and seemed interested in the idea, so one day we got to talking on Skype and were working on the project. After that project, we worked on hundreds of smaller projects and even started our own hosting company (Which was sold off now, due to us being in school). So I went from not having any programming friends to having one, just cause of a Minecraft plugin idea.

It was in highschool. The classes were boring, the teachers were dull. One day, I was making a silly application in Visual Basic. A guy I had been in class with all year saw me coding, after that he came up to me. He was excited he found someone who was a coder as well. We started talking about our experiences and the possibilities. We could fill hours of stupid highschool subjects with talk of code. We immediately became best friends, despite never really have spoken before.

We made some cool shit together.

He is still one of my best friends 7 years later, even though he stopped pursuing a programming carreer.

Well, basically 2017 sucked ass. Like a big, fat, hairy, sweaty ass. I did learn quite a bit though, so there's that.

In freshman year at college, 1992, I met a guy with a fancier computer than I had. The dude was awesome as a C coder and already had a job as one. He let me use it to play around with Persistence of Vision Raytracer which was an open source 3D scene generating language/platform. His computer was also what I used for accessing BBSes and IRC chat rooms for the first time. I was hooked from then on.

I made a game dev friend from a forum. Later we went in business together and now we have a really strong friendship. And our business is doing great.

Teacher's story:
Once a friend of mine had a problem with is program but it would only happen from time to time, so he didn't get bothered with it.
So, because I'm an evil person, I did a print in his program with the error message.
After a day debugging, he found the error. He really wanted to kill me.

I have never made a friend due to code. I have plenty of friends who code and shared CS classes within uni, but we met in other ways due to other interests. I don't think I am capable of being friends with the kind if people you would "meet through coding".

Well I can't forgot this.

In college I met a guy with whom I passed the same subjects, we had friends in common but we never spoke until after a time (8 months later) he said: "hey can you help me with my problem? I'm doing a website and I want you to verify this database... now".
I just said "ok let's see"... When I gave him my observations he said: "thank you .. I don't remember your name right now but... don't you wanna do this website with me?".
And that's how I met one of my bestfriend and coworker.

Code/development introduced me to one of the best developers I know. I knew who he was before college, but it was the college group projects and also classes that really helped get to know him and learn from him. After college we are still pretty good friends

I met 2 of my friends on the job, we we're on the same team. We supported each other. We drank a bunch. We all went out a bunch. Those 2 friends started dating. Then we all decided to be roommates, because why not. 5 years later, we're still roommates and none of us work at the company we started at.

My best and first real friend was doing an internship in the same company as I. Via her I know all my current friends.

I met @miau in England at University, through the only course we shared, Games for the Internet. I really wanted to be her friend because I thought she was pretty cool.

@miau looks incredibly confident. She has humor, imagination and is a really talented programmer.

She, on the other hand, did not want to have anything to do with other German-speaking students to improve her English skills and learn as much about England as possible.

Fortunately, I can be very stubborn. I helped her with her programming tasks whenever she let me and told her what our professor values. A few tests and beers later we were friends.

We had a guy come over to talk us through some source code we'd bought and we binded over vim colour schemes. So magical

Went onto a highschool that had a focus on computer science. Met almost all of my current friends there and I am even working with two of them as freelancers today. The teachers on this school were the best I ever had. You could see that they had fun teaching us and were excited to work at this place. I am really happy that I decided to go to this school because I had some great years, found lot of friends and decided to study applied computer science afterwards!

Hacking events, I always go then gather the team in the event place with team-less people.

It was on my last job before the one here. I met one of the other programmers in the team and it was an instant click. Really liked this dude. His name was Adam, he was older than me and we spent most of our time talking about code and listening to music (he was a hardcore Caifanes fan, which is one of the greatest Mexican rock bands ever) and he would show me the oldschool tech he used to work with. He was really cool and we still talk all the time :) another would be on a conference my current job sent me and my team to (all of my team are my friends as well) but we got to meet tons of cool people and we still talk to most of them.

Met in c++. I read the course book the summer before and decided to ditch the final review class. He followed me as the instructor said "There are two guys that don't need to study!" I waived and said, "NOPE" and kept on walking with a wave. Proved it with an A. no clue what my friend got but 20 years later we are still working at the same company.

Minecraft server, I was searching for a developer to build custom plugins so I wrote on a forum and he, Adam, replied saying he knew Java and he'd like to work with me.
I've chatted a lot with him, it's a really good friend!

I got started with coding because a friend of à friend was showing off and challenged me to build something...

We've become pretty good friends since and we occasionally help each other when we get stuck, I help him with db stuff and he helps me with the nightmare that is Javascript :p

One of the more memorable friends through coding is a guy I met at 9am at what had to be an early lecture with 150+ students. We were both following it as part of a minor but the only ones there: we apparently didn't get the message that it was cancelled because we were no majors...
We decided to just work on the group assignment because why not and became friends.
Little did we know that we had already met dozens of times (but never really talked) the two years before as we are both members of the same students association, only strengthening the bond!

Sometimes not receiving a notice of cancellation is not that bad...

A time when I struggle HARD with a PHP project because I still was learning it, so I asked on one of the worst french forum (without knowing its reputation), and I found one guy who helped me a LOT, then helped me outside the forum (Skype), and since then we remained friend and I taught him Ruby on Rails 😊

During my computer science degree I met the most brilliant, hilarious guys that I now call my best friends and still hang out with to this day.

I've taken a few other degrees and never made friends that were as good as the ones I made in my cosc degree. By far the best years I had in school were the ones spent hanging out with those guys.

The cosc program was the best place to meet good friends because the majority of us are fairly similar. We'd all rather hang out and game with friends and a few drinks then go pub crawling.

It was during 12th Grade while working on our project for the year , everyone had some kind of doubt and you know the Teacher is not always free to help every one so after looking at what me and my friends were creating she said approach them for your doubts.

Well I can be a prick sometime if I want to be mostly because you are writing bad code or your facts are wrong hence not a lot of them used to like , like me.

But after that they had no option hence felt pretty badass after that.

And like not that I was criticizing them but it you don't want to learn then please solve your own doubts yourself.

Maybe I was wrong to you know to teach everyone. but well that's me do it right else don't do it.

I am facing some problem on my new project. This is how I expect my project to work.
1. I am working on an Android application that uses Twitter sentiment analysis and gives out predictive result.
2. I want to keep the backend that is the python file/NLTK script on server/cloud/anywhere.
3. The Android App take the input and pass it to server.
4. In backend the tweets regarding the input are processed and after that a result is generated. The result is passed to Android App(client).
5. The app displays the result.
The problem is I don't know how to create the server(All I have is .py file). Secondly I don't know how to create request/response between the app and the server( client with .py) like how to create communication between them.
I have googled the query but am unable to come up with any reasonable solution. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm at college and I was learning Java. While we were practicing in class, one of my friends was having a problem with his code, it was printing that he needed to use java.lang.String.
Because he only told us after class, we didn't have the teacher to help us, so we tried debug it. After a long time, we realized that he was trying to create the class String...
We still talk about it.

I’ve met some of the best friends I could ever hope to have thanks to code.

I started with the MUGEN fighting game engine back in high school. Didn’t know a thing about code but I wanted to learn so I could make awesome characters.

If it were not for that, I would’ve never met friends from all over the world from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. I certainly never expected to have a best friend who lived in Mexico (who is now in Japan). I would’ve never found the career I have today, nor would I have met the love of my life (even if I couldn’t have her, my love is still there), and I wouldn’t have traveled the world to meet some of these friends.

In the end, it was the engine, our passion for fighting games, and our discovery of the art of code that brought us all together.

In my first job another junior dev and I (junior at the time) were assigned the task of designing and implementing a user management and propagation system for a biometric access control system. None of the seniors at the time wanted to be involved because hardware interfacing in the main software was seen as a general shit show because of legacy reasons. We spent weeks designing the system, arguing, walking out in anger, then coming back and going through it again.

After all that, we thought we would end up using each other, but we actually became really good friends for the rest of my time there. The final system was so robust that support never heard back from the client about it until around 2 years later when a power outage took down the server and blew the PSU.
