My second job. I've been hired as a research specialist, not a developer, but they found out I could code during the interview.
Boss: hey, so we have our main product line that shares the control panel for all the models, right?
Me: unh, yeah
B: well, we need to know how it works.
M: sorry?
B: yeah, I mean, we should have a manual with all the tech documentation so we know how everything works
M: ...and didn't you handle the tech docs to the developers?
B: uh...no, actually we requests feature to the devs (note: external company) with a phone call, or email...now we need the specs.
Me: omg
...
The other company (which is part of the same group) handles me the source code.
It is a huge, 25k lines of spaghetti written by at least 7 people, one at a time, uncommented.
After a month I produce a 50page doc with how everything works, after actually compiling my resignation letter 3 times.
M: boss, here the docs
B: fine, I'll take a look
15 mins later
B: this is not what we need! You cannot describe those algorithm like this!
( I described the algorithms with their block flow, with a punctual verbal description)
M: umh.. So how do you need it?
B: we need an excel table, with all the entering conditions on the rows and all the exit conditions in columns, and the description of the condition of work in the crossing cells!
M: are you even serious?7 -
The fucking SECOND i buy ethereum its price starts dropping.
//sidenote: yay 25k++, i wonder if trogus ever thought about adding a pet shark16 -
Coworker: "Yeah, I know the code module is 25K lines of code, but don't try to break it up. At some point I realized that they just have to be that big."
Me: 😦3 -
When you've been coding for what seems like an hour and when you finally look up it's dark outside 😛

University Coding Exam for Specialization Batch:
Q. Write a Program to merge two strings, each can be of at max 25k length.
Wrote the code in C, because fast.
Realized some edge cases don't pass, runtime errors. Proceed on to check the locked code in the Stub. (We only have to write methods, the driver code is pre-written)
Found that the memory for the char Arrays is being allocated dynamically with size 10240.
Rant #1:
Dafuq? What's the point of dynamic Memory Allocation if you're gonna fix it to a certain amount anyway?
Continuing...
Called the Program Incharge, asking him to check the problem and provide a solution. He took 10 minutes to come, meanwhile I wrote the program in Java which cleared all the test cases. <backstory>No University Course on Java yet, learnt it on my own </backstory>
Dude comes, I explain the problem. He asks me to do it in C++ instead coz it uses the string type instead of char array.
I told him that I've already done it in Java.
Him: Do you know Java?
Rant #2:
No you jackass! I did the whole thing in Java without knowing Java, what's wrong with you!2 -

My girl friend was complaining that I care more about programming than her.
I told her,
"Trust me baby, in the array of my interests you are [1]."
She was satisfied.3 -

Boss says to give budget for a job. I give budget by associated cost of materials that we use. Simple math device cost x amont, we need y number of x. I give budget of $25k. Boss says that's great, he gave a cost of $10k to customer. We need to work on getting it closer to that.
WTF do you need me for?2 -
spend better part of my day processing about 400M rows of data with MySql, woo ain't no single line of code that can do that in 12hrs 😊

Last hackaton (and first) I participated in was a disaster.
In the end our team was the only team, but there were other hackatons as well so in the end they just judged all the different hackatons as if they were all the same and that's the story of my team not winning 25k$ -
Going to design a contract for my services it's going to include additional costs for additional changes because with clients the job is never done 😉😉3

Screw DataStage
Screw Saleforce
Screw the $25k/week Vendor who finishes work maybe 60% complete, if I’m being generous.
Screw the business rushing to us to fix their shadow IT cluster.5 -
3ds Max Python API Documentation.
No function has a single word explaining what it does.
The Documentation seems like it is completely auto generated and while writing the API they forgot to add Docstrings....2 -
The most excited I’ve been is probably now.
I’ve been working on a process that manages various prices, in a table that currently has 25k+ records, and viewing this through our ERP is extremely painful, no search no filter etc.
I’ve been given the task of creating an external application that we can use to manage these in an easier way.
This is my first “proper” project, it’s going to be difficult, I’m doing everything including all the planning etc, so I’ve spent some time today writing user stories etc.
But I’m looking forward to creating a useful app that not only saves me time, but could also be rolled out across the business -
A toast to the perks of backend, to never being bothered again with every single ui change.... Just you and your code 😏😀2

Follow-up to my exp with Travis CI: https://devrant.com/rants/5006826
As my allotted credits are set to expire on December 23, I sent a request for 25k monthly OSS credits to Travis support on December 18.
Mind you this is only half of the credits of their lowest subscription price and I didn't ask for extra CPU, so not much to ask.
While for the previous credit request, I got an answer within 24h, this request has gone unanswered for over 2 working days and I noticed it got labeled with "Priority: low" although I will be unable to continue my OSS work in 2 days.
Let's see whether they plan to really uphold their promise that "they will always support open-source" -
When I was 11, my uncle called me genius and I should study computers after I went online to HP's official website (using a 56k modem connection) to download the drivers for the printer we had at hone, since somebody lost the cd with the installation that came with the printer. Today, I am 25 yo software developer earning 25k+ a year :) #thanksuncle

instagrams "based on likes" is total bullshit, I don't like shit those suggestions like but if you scroll through your contacts you'll find those suggestions. Why not just say it like it is: "from your contacts or from your friends contacts"3

and so today almost an hour ago I became the left one... I guess she went with the right one 😂😂😂... How many days have passed between my previous "relationship" post and this one ending... but in truth I was in the "babe" zone 😂😂😂
On to the next one, with the lessons from mistakes of the previous, hopefully she will last longer 🙏1 -

For some reason, out of no where, I made this word up. It's called Moop, and it's definition is paradoxical. It means "everything and nothing, anywhere and nowhere, etc". So one day at work one of my coworkers pushed his untested commit to the master branch of our 25k project. To make matters worse, he deleted all other branches and previous versions of the project. Our project manager heard about it and became so angry that he almost broke our no-curse-word-policy. So he called is all together to get around it so he could properly vent.
Project manager: "Guys I'm extremely angry at James (the one who pushed the untested source code to our commercial project, ruining it)
Me: well, I have a word that we can use
Project manager: what is it?
Me: Moop
You can guess what the next few weeks at work was like. All of my coworkers had to fix the crap James made, including myself. So the conversations went like this: "The mooperfluffer James should have never mooped with us!", "MOOP YOU JAMES, I HOPE YOU HET MOOPED TO HELL YOU MOOPUP!!!!!", "Hey James, guess what! I hope you moop yourself". Our boss became a strong moop user and spray moop all over James workstation. We put moop in his cup, his laptop keyboard, even his thumb drive. We downloaded moop.exe to his PC so we could moop his kernel.
Today James' life is officially mooped.3 -
Seems like Windows 11 has some nice improvement for file handling performance; though I am not sure whether they're implemented on the system level or on the Explorer app level. What I have been noticing is that a folder with 25k files in it gets opened in Explorer instantly on Windows 11; while on Windows 10 the same folder was pretty slow to appear

Project manager, knows nothing/little about the project... Always sends new features to be added only to be removed 1hr later 😣😣, you have experienced nothing until you work under 1

when you are using javascript frameworks and plugins in mvc and you have ReSharper, for your own safety and sanity exclude *.js

I once wrote a whole lot of classes with lots of functions and pushed them to the live server without testing... There were no errors 😎1

-- Have you ever self hosted a Linux/Free Bsd server at home?
-- What was the maintenance like in terms of operation and cost compared to an online service?
I and my partner are planning to self host our Ubuntu server locally because currently though we spend less than $1100 a month on Azure with moderate CPU usage but we plan to scale out with believes that the server cost might sky-rocket.
We made a budget of $25k for the setup which includes cost of hardware, bandwidth and power.
We also made some research concerning most used hardwares for home servers because we really are newbees talk of hardware. What we found are options related to the Intel Xeon as CPU, some others say use NAS, while some are more of advertising.
$25k on the desk,
we care more about speed than of space. How can we make the setup totally worth it? You don't have to spare us a change, just some headlight and way to go.
Your advice are needed. Thank you.8 -
I need a package repository and I find jfrog artifactory. Seems great, except the OSS version is utterly useless. The pro version is overpriced, and does not support s3 buckets and the Enterprise version is >25k/year, just to store a half dozen npm and PHP packages on s3 storage? Are you fucking kidding me???
How can companies justify this much money for a package manager?9 -
The hardwork to find a good flat in the allocated city 😓 BTW any advice on buying a good android phone between 20k to 25k? (upcoming fortnite compatibility will be appreciated) I am moving from windows phone 😅4

Question about linux iptables. I am currently blocking all access and whitelisting only when my users launch my software. When software is launched a socket client is also launched, it connects to socket server, identifies itself with a password and disconnects. If given password by socket client is correct, then socket server whitelists the users IP by executing the following command: " iptables -I INPUT -s userIP -j ACCEPT".
My problem is that now I have lots of duplicates of IP's whitelisted and as far as I've heard I should not go over 25k iptable rules.
So my question is how to check if ip is already whitelisted, in order to avoid duplicate iptable rules for for same IP?
Obvious solution would be to store whitelist somewhere (mysql/txt) and double check before whitelisting ip, but maybe there is an easier way to do this?4
