Search - "apk"
My employer tried to install my app in his IPhone X and he scold me why the apk not supported. I explain to him that apk is for Android. He yelled :” don’t give me shit , you don’t have a degree on this so shut up, I do have, apk are universal because it is coded in Java20
I uploaded a release APK to Play Store with the API host set to the local address I used in dev 192.168.x.x:8000 :/8
Me at the office, Boss calling me by phone..
Boss: Hi, I need a new Build of XX Android app for another client.. set the base address at x.x.x.x and send me an APK file
Me: OK, I will do it.
Boss: can you do it in 5 minutes?
Me: Sure, it's simple..
Android Studio: You think it's simple !
* Indexing Files
* Sync Project
* Gradle Build
* Some f* tasks
Oh kill me now !!4
Just got BUGS list from our Client and fuck- 95% of bugs are not even bugs :|
- No, changing the (not pre-decided) verbiage is not a bug
- Adding two more pages in the app is not a bug (what the fuck :|)
- No, APK file not running in iPhone is not a bug (goddamn :|)
- No, adding these "fuckin new" functionalities is not a bug (seriously ? :/)
Mr "used to be a good coder" PM,
Getting "504 Timeout Gateway" error because Server is temporarily down is NOT a fuckin frontend bug
and fuckin No, Global variables and functions without any architecture don't make the programming "kind of better"
ps: And VB dot net is not a fuckin scripting language, VBScript is.
"buggy average coder"9
Remember the Ububtu mobile OS ?
I remember working on the community UI drive for this project. To know that something as awesome as ubuntu would come down into the form factor of a phone , was just ecstatic.
The first build was out , people liked it. People nagged a bit about the performance issues , but it was going fine. Then the second build .. then the third no one heard about and the 4th that never came.
The interface for this system was unique because after Wondows , this is the only other OS developer that embraced the one ecosystem mantra of design.
Using Ubuntu phone was natural , it was a small desktop OS.
I remember logging on to launchpad one day and seeing the Ubuntu mobile channel with it's last post " Thank you and goodbye "
It was heartbreaking , but i could understand. Like windows phone ( which if you guys weren't aware of , had APK support by the end of its lifecycle ) felt crushed under the weight of android and iOS.
Waiting for a day when there will be a third champion in game. I miss having to see Ubuntu being on my phone , but they seem to be doing great in everything else , so good on that. 😄
Ok done .. thanks32
I was an Android developer in a company, I was told to generate a release APK file to test it locally.
So, to sign the apk, I created a keystore file and the password is my name. they decided to publish the file on Play Store.
I left the company years ago, and still on every update they have to put my name as a password.5
Manager: You have to add an extra section in the app to show more details.
Me: We are already showing so many unnecessary details. These changes are not required.
Manager: No !! You have to do it.
Me : Ok !!! So why can't we show it in the section where we are showing the other details. Why make a separate section for it.
Manager : No !! It won't be clearly visible to the user. Just do it.
So I added another section to show useless information that we are already showing it f**king everywhere else in the app.
So I released a new apk next day with the added features.
In meeting, our CTO goes through the app and ask manager....
" Why we have added an extra section for showing same details that we are showing everywhere else ???
Who approved this ?? This is nonsense !!! "
Here comes the fun part.
Manager : I don't know. I didn't ask for it. These changes were not there earlier.
And ask me.
"Who told you to make these changes ? "
I am like... F***k man you a***ole told me to do it even when i told you it will be nonsense.12
Day 2 of refactoring the mess my "senior" ex colleague left behind completed.
So far removed 3837 lines of code (from 17468 total).
Removed around 230 unused/duplicated assets.
Cut down the total apk size from 214mb to 163mb.
On average frames render about 3ms faster.
Fixed 2 "unfixable" bugs he'd ignored for over half a year.
And the code is actually becoming readable, and far from done yet.
It feels so good to not be obstructed anymore by an ignorant "senior" dev7
* I send an APK so that my client can test*
My client: I can't install the application
Me: Did you download and install it from the email I sent you?
client: No I downloaded from the play store.
(In my mind: Why the fuck do you Download it from the play store? I fucking sent you an email to 3 of your fucking email addresses so that you can fucking test the fucking APK that I fucking fixed it for you! You fucking worthless peice of shit!)
But I reacted as: No no, you should download the apk from the email I sent. I've sent it to all your email addresses.
client: I can't find the APK In your email.
(In my mind: Wow! I just don't get it! How can you be so stupid? I'm just wondering how your company hired you as a 'director for X')
*I send him a Screenshot proving that the apk exists*
Turns out that this idiot doesn't know to use outlook for Android! He then logs in to his gmail and finds the apk.(Coz I had emailed it to his outlook and gmail accounts)
M just wondering, should I drop this guy? Or charge him 2x for this shit?7
Went to my first Hackathon this weekend.
There was 6 of us, 3 devs (including me) and 3 business guys for the presentation and info gathering
The 3 business guys wouldn't show us any of their work, but we're demanding to see all of ours.
Bothering us every 5 minutes to see 2her4 23 are and what's left
Then 1 of 3 business guys accused one of my devs of deleting half of their PowerPoint presentation. That turned out to be bullshit. Looked in the edit history and the business guy was the one who deleted them.
We brought it up to them all, and they got all defensive.
Then, before they revoked our access to the PowerPoint they removed us from the presentation entirely.
Their final presentation contained an app(APK only) we spent an all nighter on, and pictures of a few of the wireframes we did.
I immediately went to an event organizer, filled a complaint. Showed the wireframe project, the source code of the APK they used, and told her they just dropped us and stole our work. She went to them, they couldn't prove they did the work
They are now banned from future hackathons at this place.
I do not appreciate being fucked with, and more so don't like it when you try to fuck my friends. Honestly want to send an email to the business guys workplace and inform them their two top employees are thief's.
The positive thing I took from this is me and my dev team built a stronger relationship and found out we work amazing together.
/Rant about trash humans10
Fucking crunchyroll hardcodes their access tokens in a Constants Class in their APK, technically that is a security issue.
What the actual fuck Crunchyroll!? No fucking wonder you got DNS Hijacked so quick, security is literally your second priority you dumbed down twats, get some real devs and some real QAs for fucking god sakes, you're tearing down your own system by inviting exploits.9
I'm pissed at my cousin who's studying IT at the moment. He wants to copy my thesis project(from 3 years ago) and make it his own for his thesis project this year. Like woah dude! Can't you be creative, work hard, and make a project of your own because that's for your own good? And don't you dare bring up the "I'm your cousin, pretty please"-card up! He also wants me to lie if his professor contacts me and tell that he was part of the project. Are you effin' kidding me? You didn't know how to code 3 years ago! How would you expect me to tell your prof that you were part of the team? I just gave him the documentation(without the source code) and I said I lost the apk. That's just how far I can go for someone like that 😕9
"I can not install the apk file you have sent me on my phone, can I install the ios version instead?!"1
Dad: "Install this apk for me"
*try it and installation fails*
Me: "I checked the repo and it's for a much older version of Android. Won't work for you."
Dad: "Don't be a quitter. It can definitely be done."
Please stop asking me for help.6
we are working for a client who wants an app compatible for both iOS and android. He asked us to send both the "apk" and "ipk" files together😂1
I got yelled at from the Testing Guy because I sent him an APK file at 5:30 just when he wanted to leave.7
A story about an Android TVbox which decided to become an iPad
Several years ago we've bought an android tv-box.
It served me and my family well for several years.
Specs are not that important in this story, but there they are:
Amlogic quadcore 1.4HGz
This device served us well - online TV, browsing, music, file sharing and so on. But recently cheap Chinese memory deciteed to take a break and damaged ROM. Because of that device won't boot. The only option was to take it apart and "short circuit" certain legs on memory chip and make it boot from SD card and install new firmware. After such operations tv-box worked well again.
Hoverer, memory glitched again and again and this algorithm was repeated for several months.
But that is not what is this story about.
One day memory went completely crazy and there was no way to install new firmware on it. It just hanged on install. (BTW, it was official firmware for this device)
But after countless attempts it finally worked! It installed the firmware and booted into launcher and connected to WiFi!
But now comes the most interesting part.
It was not android anymore.
It decided to became an iPad.
My dad logged in to his Google account via tv-box and got mail that someboby connected from our IP via iPad (we don't have an iPad) and using safari browser! Stock browser is not safari browser.....
"Ok, nvm, crazy glitch." - we thought.
But preinstalled play marked wont launch. Because he told us, that we're trying to connect from iPad.
And Google chrome page suggested to download chrome for iPad
And everything was acting like it is an iPad.
OK, downloaded iTunes, why not??? ._.
Tried to install elixir for android via apk from flash, but then memory glitched one more time, everything went black and tv-box had damaged ROM again...
After that we decided to not torment it anymore...
That's it. Poor Android TVbox that all his life dreamed to become an iPad. Rest in peace.2

I was out Thursday at the Hospital. I'm what the doctors would call "Ill as fuck"
So, Friday I’m back in the office to the usual: "How was that appointment?"
I know people mean well when they ask this. So, I do the polite thing and tell them it went as well as it could.
Realistically it does't matter how well it went... They haven't cured Crohn's because I showed up to the appointment. They know I'm fucked already.
But, push it down, add it to the future aneurism.
I had to go through the usual resignation meetings with managers:
"We"re fucked now you're going"
"we need to get a handle on how fucked"
"already done that for you, here"s a trello board, very fucked."
"we need to put a plan together to drop all the junior devs in the shit with the work you’ve been doing"
"You need about 4 devs, please refer to the previous trello board for your plan"
Meanwhile, me and Morpheus are in constant communication because all of this is like a Shakespearean comedy.
So, I overhear a conversation between a Junior Dev and the Solution Architect.
[SA] took over the project because he knows better than two tried and tested senior devs -_- (fuckwit).
JD: "It took me one and a half days to build it out"
SA: "Yeah, it must have taken me twice as long... It must be a problem with the project, you should just be able to check it out and run it."
JD: "I know, it has to be wrong"
All of this is about Morpheus' work of art, of an Ionic 3 hybrid app.
I fumed quietly at my desk because I've been ordered by the Stazi to be hands off.
Since Morpheus and me were pulled from the project [JD] and [JD2] were dropped into it to get it over the line.
It"s unfortunate and I was clear and honest with my advice to them: I personally would not take over the project because I"d be way out of my depth... Oh, and the App works, so uh, there's no work to do.
They have been constantly at our desks. Asking fuckdiculous questions about how to perform basic tasks. So they can get Morpheus" frigging masterpiece to the user.
It"s like watching that touch up of jesus that got borked by an amateur. Shit I have google, it's like watching this happen: http://ti.me/NnNSAb
[JD] came to me Friday evening.
"I can’t get this to build to iOS or install on [Test Analyst]'s phone."
Me: "No worries brother, where are you stuck right now?"
[JD] describes the first steps with clear indication he hasn't googled his problem.
Life lesson: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=lmgtfy
Que an hour of me showing [JD] how to build an Ion3 project for iOS. Fuck it, your man's in a bind and he"s asked politely for help. I can show him quicker than he can read 3 sets of docos.
I took him through 'ionic cordova build ios', the archive and release processes in XCode 9, then the apk bundling process for droid. Finally we have an MAM so the upload process for that too.
All the while cleaning up his AppIDs, Profiles, deployment attempts.
Damn they were a mess.
I did this with a smile on my face, not because I could say "I told you so"... But. because when any developer asks you how to do something. If you know how to do it, you should always be happy to learn them some new tricks!
Dude's alright, he's been dropped in the shit. Now I know how badly so I'll help him learn things that are useful to his role, but aren't project specific.
As a plausi-senior dev (I'll tell you about that later); it's my job to make sure my team have what they need to go home smiling!
I’m not a hateful fucker, the guy asked me an honest question so I am happy to give him the honest answer.
I took him through it a few times and explained a few best practices. Most were how to do his AppID and ProvProfile set up. Good lad, took it all on board.
However! In his frustration, he pointed the finger at Morpheus' "David" (ref: Michelangelo).
He miraculously morphed into a shiny colourful parrot and fed me SA's line:
"you should just be able to build from a clean clone"
My response was calm and clear:
"You can, it took me 20 minutes on Thursday evening. I was bored and curios, so I wanted to validate Morpheus' work. Here it is on my iOS device and my Android device. It would have taken me 5 if my laptop wasn’t so horrifically out of date."
I validated Morpheus' work so I have evidence, I trust that brilliant bastard.
I just need to be able to prove it's good.
[JD] took this on board.
Maybe listening to two tried and trusted senior devs is better than listening to a headstrong Solution Architect.
When JD left for the weekend I was working a late one (https://www.devrant.io/rants/874765).
His sign off was beautiful.
"I think I can happily admit defeat on this one, it can wait until Monday."
To which I replied: "no worries brother, if you need a hand give me a shout."
Rule 1: Don't be a cunt.
Rule 2: If someone needs help and you can give it: Give it!
Rule 3: Don't interrupt James' cigarette time.
Rule 4: goto Rule 3.4
Needed to deliver apk urgent urgently for push notification testing. I was unable to receive push token. Code is right in every way. Couldn't figured out in 15min. Lead comes to my seat and asks what's issue. And hey suddenly I figured it out. It was my wifi closed.. Bullshit 😬😠4
On reccomendation of @chabad360 I made this its own rant.
I switched from marketing to CS (complete with a three year degree, no Bootcamp). I still went to interviews as you'd expect a marketing man to go; in a suit. Commence the weirdest interview.
I: "You're not the typical engineer. Can you talk to real engineers?"
M: "could you elaborate"
I:"you're dressed in a suit. That leads me to think you're a MS user. Do you think you could talk to real, ie. Linux using engineers?"
M: " well, I haven't used windows in about a year soo..
I: "Mac isn't Linux."
M: "I'm aware. I've switched to Ubuntu so I could use KVM-QEMU android emulator with GPU pass through to train Deep Convolution Networks on mobile devices. Also had to compile Google's internal build tool because it had bugs I had to fix so I could compile the APK."
I: "ah, Ubuntu eh? **Insert Smirk** How about a follow-up?"
M: "no, I'm switching to Gentoo this week and would like to talk to real engineers about that."
I thanked him for the coffee and left.2
Why has "privacy minded" people fallen for the illusion that Signal is good?
- It is centralized, which means you can't have control
- It uses google play services
- Using third party servers to send gifs
- The apk has flaws
- There is a reason F-Droid dont want it in its repo
I really can't wrap my head around why "privacy minded" people would embrace it.25
Wasted 7 hours for this:
import moment from 'moment'
var moment = require('moment')
What happened? When app running in debug mode all is working without issues! When generating release APK, it crashes when using moment
Fucking hybrid shit apps...13
WOOOO!!!!! I BUILT MY FIRST FULLY FUNCTIONAL REACT NATIVE APP! Including the release apk that needs to be signed. Took an entire day and more like an advanced HelloWorld.
But the core functionality works... Though not pretty...3
LPT: NEVER accept a freelance job without looking at the project's source first
Client: I have a project made by a company that is now abandoning it, I want you to fix some bugs
Me: Okay, can you:
1) Give me a build to test the current state of the game
2) Tell me what the bugs are
3) Show me the source
4) Tell me your budget
Client: *sends a list of 10 bugs* Here's the APK and to give you the project I'll need you to sign an NDA
*sees at least 20 bugs*
*still downloading source*
*bugs look quite easy to fix should be done under an hour*
Me: Okay, so, I can fix each bug for $10 and I can do 2 today
Client: Okay can you fix 8 bugs today for $40??
Me: No I cannot.
Client: okay then 2 today for $20 is fine, I want a refund if you can't fix them today
Me: Look dude, this isn't the first time I am doing this, aight? I'll fix the bugs today you can pay me after check they are done, savvy?
*source is downloaded*
*literal apes wrote the scripts, commented out code EVERYWHERE
Debug logs after every line printing every frame causing FPS drops, empty objects in the scene
multiple unused UI objects
everything is spaghetti*
*give up, after 2 hours of hell*
*tfw averted an order cancellation by not taking the order and telling client that they can pay me after I am done*
Attached is an image of a level object pool
It's an array with each element representing a level.
The numbers and "Final" are ids for objects in an object pool
The whole string is .Split(',') into an array (RIP MEMORY BTW) and then a loop goes through each element in the split array and instantiates the object from an object pool5
Fucking youtube ads... Showing me the same retarded ad 100s of times a day will definitely make me buy the thing, real fucking geniuses...
I am still looking for a way to block them forever on android, but I have no idea how. I've been looking for a public key or some sort of certificate in the apk so I could at least do a man in the middle, but no luck so far..14
Why the fuck does Apple hate developers so much? I just want to test and play around a bit. Why do I have to own a fucking Mac? Why do I need to pay 99$ a year just to install a debug build on my own device?! It's literally impossible to get into ios development without being rich or having some kind of plan for revenue...
Testing my app on Android:
Install Android studio -> plug in phone -> run code in Android Studio or simply install the resulting apk on your phone.
Trying to test my app on my iPad:
Google how to build app for iPad -> reading that you have to own a Mac to run xcode when you want to build Code for iOS -> searching for a workaround -> find a way to build my app online -> setting the tool and building it -> Trying out 5 different tools to sideload the app, no one works -> finding out that you need a developer account to sign the app for testing purposes on MY OWN DEVICE. I really would appreciate it if I would be able to install personal stuff for testing and LEARNING without being forced into insolvency. Why are people putting up with this kind of bullshit?18
* Building an android app
Me: I just make some coffee cuz this will take a while.
.......Returning in front of my computer....
"Error installing APK"
Truth: You will regret not using Kotlin as soon as possible. Don't deprive yourself of pleasant development and productivity boost.5
Fabric (crashlytics) , I have to say it is helps so much when testing the iOS app, haven't gotten it to work with Android but I'd just install the apk anyways lol4
One of my colleagues held a very short, literally 5 minutes, interview today. The candidate was looking for an android developer position.
Me: Done already?😕
C: Yep. Had enough.
Me: How come?
C: I asked him if he has any apps on the store? No. Any public git? No. Any apk? No.
C: Ok what experience do you have?
Dude: I worked on a app similar to imdb 4 years ago. I made a page for it.
C: *Page* *triggered* *internal screaming* 😂
C: Ok and since then?
C; Ok, we'll call you.
Best ot luck in your android dev career mate. Never gonna hear from us.
How can you come to an interview and be so unprepared. Was he delosutional or something?😕2
It turns out that the weird errors that have been showing up where because I ran:
Flutter build APK
Working on a custom Chromium OS board at the moment
So boards in Chromium OS are specialized versions of Chromium OS built for a specific hardware while maintaining upstream compatibility.
I built a board specifically to be as near as CloudReady's compatibility table as possible, so this is what I have at the moment:
* Most hardware works (Libinput)
* Still working on supplying Nvidia drivers using nouveau (Google insists using OSS drivers, we can't use NVIDIA drivers)
* Still working on making Crostini GPU-enabled by default so I don't always terminate it via vmc
* ARC works as per the open sourced Android Runtime but I need help making the Play Store working
Overall its a bit stable but if anyone's down I'll replicate it on a GitHub repository and I'll let everyone contribute their changes. The aim of the custom board is to:
* Make it work on most hardware possible
* Add android support with APK installation (FydeOS has this but I can't replicate it in CrOS).
* Produce a close to Chrome's release channel.
Here's a screenshot of me using it, it works but I'll need to start over from scratch to make it more contributable10
Four years ago while still a newbey in Android Dev and still using the eclipse IDE which was hell to configure by adding Android plugins,my girlfriend had a birthday.
With my new found love of coding thought of developing a b-day app for her. With so little android knowledge I had a great idea the main activity would have her photo as the background and button which when clicked would show a toast saying happy b-day love.
After spending few minutes in Tutorial point and learning how to display a toast and setting click listeners on buttons I was good to go and compiled the app.
Later that evening I head to her room where her b-day was to be held with some of her lady friends .When presenting gifts I presented her gift said had one more surprise for her and asked for her phone and using bluetooth sent the apk to her phone.
Installing the app I was scared to death on seeing how my grey buttons were displaying on her 2.7 screen size since had no idea on designing for multiple screens.
Giving her back the phone she loved the app and felt like her superman in the room though not for long. Her lady friends had gone ahead took her phone and were critising the app:
Why can't I take a selfie
Why can't the app play a b-day song for her and this went on them not knowing how hurting that was.
Bumped on the lady who lead the onslaught on me and had to go down memory lane.Life is a journey.2
I just saw the equalizer 2 at the cinema and about half way through there is a phone with "military grade encryption" on it. We see the phone screen showing the encryption and what is it? Freaking JQuery!3
Now my facebook messenger app does it's updates inside the app without my consent to install an apk.
That feeling when you have successfully reduced the APK size from 29MB to 14MB
Made an Android app a while ago. I needed some pet project so I decided to go with Java for Android. First time, no experience at all.
So everything went ok, I had a little help from a colleague, structuring code, and pushing to the store. Work done app was doing ok.
A year later I came back to this project. I needed to fix a bug - date time and daylight savings crap. 😥
Spent a week on it. Ready to push a new version to the store, with some extra features! Build apk. All good.
Wait. I need to sign the APK? Wtf. I had to format my hard drive. How do I recover my fucking certificate?
*Google's for a while*
No fucking way. I can't restore the certificate. Or get the keystore back. The solution is to create a new app with a brand new package name?
Thanks for nothing, I'm done with Android development.9
Dear Apple: FIX YOUR FUCKED UP IDE!
Generating IPA file takes ages, freezes the shit out of the mac and to make it even worse a full clean -> build -> Generate Signed APK on slow ass gradle takes barely 5 minutes while XCode takes ages9
Me at BestBuy today: Oh man, you got the got the Pixel 2 XL? This is looks good and feels good in hand. Last time I stopped by, the other guy had just the Pixel 2. Blah blah blah.. so is this running the 8.1 or 8.0?
Verizon associate at BestBuy: The 8.1
Me: oohh, you got that preview huh? *goes into system to check.. dude it's running 8.0
Verizon associate: oh really? Dang, I forgot. I'll side-load the APK.
Me: 😕😒😂 I hear you.
*At that point I lost hope in humanity*3
Not really a rant, but:
Me, programming in unity using C#: well if I add that library, My life will get a little bit easier, but the final APK will be 2MB heavier because of it.
WebDev who never used compiled programming languages: can't you just minify it?
I'm a web dev who decided to take a shot at mobile development (My first mobile app mind you). I'm writing a mobile app and one of it's features is communicating to my server via websockets.
So I write the code, click to send the data and my server doesn't receive it. Fuck. I check why. I log everything. Nothing.
I spend several of hours and I'm exhausted by this point so i call one of our mobile developers to help me. Turns out my emulator didn't have a WiFi module. FUCK.
Alright so I compile it to an apk and install it on my phone. I popped open a terminal and started my local node server.
I click on the mobile app...
NOTHING LOGS. FUUUUUUCK.
And this is the best part.
Apparently I deleted the console.dir call from my server that executed when it received some data from an emitter.
I only thought of this last night at 2am so I got up and checked. Yep. Kill me.1
1 - Spend 6 months building an app with Flutter
2 - Try to add in-app purchase. Must upload an apk to google console and register a product
3 - Must launch the app so the product is activated
4 - Console complains apk must contain 64 bits version
5 - Go to the issues tab on github and find a solution
6 - Implement the solution, recompile and send 2 apk files to Console
7 - Did not work...
8 - Find out maybe the console will allow just on closed alpha and beyond
9 - Put apks on closed alpha and fail because the Console wants a new apks with increased version codes...
10 - Recompile and send apks
11 - Console won't allow launching unless the format is using the new App Bundle
12 - Flutter does not support App Bundle with 32 and 64 bits...
13 - See issue about it saying the possible fix is in beta version, just need to update... What could go wrong?
I just wanted to release a damn app
I hate that shit5
Never thought I would assemble an APK using terminal, but thanks to cheap SSD and Android studio, I think enough said, Android devs will understand lol14
When I corrupted the keystore for my production android app apk. Oh the panic! I ended up uploading it again and telling the users to download the new app.2
My colleague trying to build an apk ,but an error occur and the built failed.
Restart Android Studio, built fail.
Restart PC , built still fail.
And then he said, "I guess I need to restart my life."
If I want to set up a vpn tunnel in a network to securely transfer files between android devices connected to the network , what can i do ?
A kali os is responsible for destributing public, private keys.
Tried to use wireguard for that but the apk wont support file transfer.
Why not release the devrant (mobile+web) client on github (and maybe gitlab for people that would actually contribute but are special about the usage of github) so people could contribute to it, leading to faster progress? I thought about it now for a bit and couldn't see any problems with that, since the current apk can be anyway unpacked via freely available tools (appcelerator doesn't make it too hard either anyway 😕) and the website/api isn't any secret either (see the 4000 clients getting patched together out of zombie like api calls)21
I need guidance about my current situation.
I am perfectionist believing in OOP, preventing memory leak in advance, following clean code, best practices, constantly learning about new libraries to reduce custom implementation & improve efficiency.
So even a single bad variable name can trigger my nerves.
I am currently working in a half billion $ IT service company on a maintenance project of 8 year old Android app of security domain product of 1 of the top enterprise company of the world, which sold it to the many leading companies in the world in Govt service, banking, insurance sectors.
It's code quality is such a bad that I get panic attacks & nightmares daily.
Issues are like
- No apk obfuscation, source's everything is openbook, anybody can just unzip apk & open it in Android Studio to see the source.
- logs everywhere about method name invoked,
- static IV & salt for encryption.
- thousands of line code in God classes.
- Irrelevant method names compared to it's functionality.
- Even single item having list takes 2-3 seconds to load
- Lag in navigation between different features' screens.
- For even single thing like different dimension values for different density whole 100+ lines separate layout files for 6 types of densities are written.
- No modularized packages, every class is in single package & there are around 100+ classes.
Owner of the code, my team lead, is too terrified to change even single thing as he don't have coding maturity & no understanding of memory leak, clean code, OOP, in short typical IT 'service' company mentality.
Client is ill-informed or cost-cutting centric so no code review done by them in 8 years.
Feeling much frustrated as I can see it's like a bomb is waiting to blast anytime when some blackhat cracker will take advantage of this.
Need suggestions about this to tackle the situation.9
So friend is making this key-value app with Thunkable for people with dementia. We're just unlocking our bikes when he wonders "what if they forget they installed the app?".
I suggest push notifications but cos he's using Thunkable FREE he'd have to pay £200 for that.
So he says he'd "F*CKING SPAM THEM WITH EMAILS" instead!
ps his APK is 30MB10
Client: Sends me the logo to use for android app as launcher icon.
Me : Send him the apk with the launcher icon he sent
Client: 10 minutes later the logo icon of the app in a way its also blurred in a way when you compare with other apps icon on the phone
Me: I warned you and you pushed I using it.
I love react native but I hate the fact that I have to type
cd android && ./gradlew cleanBuildCache && cd .. && react-native bundle --platform android --dev false --entry-file index.js --bundle-output android/app/src/main/assets/index.android.bundle --assets-dest android/app/src/main/res/ && cd android && ./gradlew assembleDebug
just to generate an apk file.12
! First Apk
There is nothing else great feeling than making your first application's about us page.
Touched moon just now !
The internet at large is annoying me.
I just signed up for the payback card through Rewe. Cool idea. It's a German points card, and I have an American phone. Play store tells me the app isn't available in my country, and I don't see it on fdroid.
Anyone have suggestions for a reliable apk site to get this from?8
Me: I need to build my APK and upload it so I can show my friends when I meet them at the mall in a few days
Also me: *writing this rant*
>building the same app once again because of a bug
>look in the unity editor settings for android
>google it, find it might be useful to minify, obfuscate code and other stuff
>try to minify the shit of the app
>original app was 25.1MB
>minified app is 24.6MB
>minified app using "Gradle (Experimental)" is 24.5MB2
i'm trying to make a simple app. it would be an easier to do both natively.
for fucks sake flutter, add some functionality. flutter recently got out of beta but it's not fucking done. no native webviews, no native push notifications. fuck that.
however, i do have to give credit where credit is due. coming into flutter i expected a different feel of the app on iphone and android. it was exactly the same, and it was smooth too. in that respect, i love flutter.
also guys, i have an app (not finished yet) i built with flutter and i would like some constructive criticism for changing the ui. only android right now though, i can't afford ios.
Working on a project needing to integrate java, jquery, SQL, various aspects of Android unix manipulation i.e. rotation, gps, music players, etc..needs to successfully build and after getting finally getting all needed repository files, work in android studio then be converted into an apk, compressed sent to instuctor's device for seemless use...this group project included 6 individuals teamed up like avengers to complete...my team mates either dropped the class or with drew.fml with a hammer sideways.2
Package Installer on android needs to show something other than just the progress bar. Even a basic log like windows installers that say, "copying this, extracting this, done..." If it affects the minimalism of the interface, they could try doing what Tor browser does- swipe to see a log. It just feels heartbreaking to wait 5 long minutes for it to process on this tortoise device, and then get, "app not installed." with an OK button. :( Like, whyyyy? There should be a "THAT'S NOT OK" button.
Is there any magisk module for this? Or some other tweak?5
Been working on an application for the three days then yesterday happened to present a demo to my target client base.
Me:I need you to go through the app and tell me your experience using it.
User: Great let me see it and comment on it.
Me:I wait patiently as he goes through the app asking for clarification on some activities .
User:I love it but I think would be nice if we improve on the following.
Me:Okay go ahead all ears.
User:How about on the share feature instead of sharing the apps link then one goes and downloads it and install, how about you simply share the APK and install it instant.
Me:Okay that's a good thought and later go on to explain to him why we share links as compared to sending the APK directly .
So as i was exporting the apk file from unity, unity crashed and it caused a BSOD
I had a fucking heart attack because i coding from 16 hours straight
But my shit is still there
I finally understand why do many people use a MacBook pro for work5
So, funny story with a bit of self promotion at the end.
I was recently checking out some apps on playstore and found that my first ever , "launched just to experiment" app (released 1.5 years ago) has received more than 5k downloads . I was very happy about that so posted a small message on LinkedIn .
Now , my LinkedIn profile consists of 98% people who are totally strangers and never met me ( is it just me or do you also get a lot of stranger connect requests there?). So my usual post rarely ever goes beyond 5 or 6 likes.
Bit idk how there too my post got 35+ likes and now i was on cloud9.
So i finally decided to kick my ass and release some update to that app ( it had around 70% pity comments like "nice first app,but it should have this x feature",. "overall nice but it could use an x feature " etc.
And boy what my journey was in the last 72hours.
Firstly my madhead laptop started killing me with the battery failures and constant hang.
Then my past asshole self tried to give me a middle finger. So i have this whole partition in my memory where i keep my Android stuff and apps. It has a special folder named published zone and i keep all my published app codes and related files there.
I was fairly certain that this app's code eill be also there,so i opened it, found the code and tried running it.
Turns out my asshole self had tried to mess around the code so much that all the db layer WAS fucked up, all the ui WAS changed and no code was working.
"Not to worry", i thought. I always use git and there would be a correct version some commits before. WRONG. I HAD CHANGED THE WHOLE FUCKING WORKING PRODUCTION CODE AND DIDN'T MAINTAIN A VCS!
Also this was the verbose and shitty java code my 1.5 year before self so loved to write, so it was taking me way more time to figure out what's happening in an already fucked up code.
So i tried a couple of ways to get back my working code :
- I tried looking for a google recommended solution. Those guys take my whole app code build and distribute via playstore, but they provide no means to retrieve back the original code.
- i checked my (occasionally) back up hard disk but no. My hard disk would have 100s of movies from 2016 , but not a useful piece of fuckin code.
- i also tried to get my apk and decompile it via some online decompiler. Here the google again fucks up and don't allow me to get my apk directly. Meanwhile i found a ton of shady websites which are hosting an apk of my app without my knowledge O_o . I tried to decompile on of them but code was even more non understandable than my fuck up code.
So i ended up looking at both the mess up code and decompiled code and coded the whole app from scratch ( well not scratch, i extracted the resources and some undamaged activities from the mess up code . Also github was down for more than 3 hours yesterday , at the same time when i was trying to look onto some repositories)
- DON'T FUCK UP WITH THE PRODUCTION CODE
- MAINTAIN VCS
- Your laptop is shit reliable, github is also shit reliable , so save code at multiple places.
- there are way more copies of your code lying on the internet than you think.
Checkout my app here :https://play.google.com/store/apps/...3
So an old Ionic 3 project wont work on the newest CLI.
I check around for the error, update some dependencies, sure enough it starts working again, all is great or so I thought.
Later something weird starts happening, upon pushing a new view on the navCtrl, the navParams are null on the next view.
I later find out that navCtrl is becoming navParams just on the first bit of the view loading, so I do a dirty fix just to keep working on the functionality from my browser, I know very well this will cause problems later on, this is just so I can keep working on functionality.
I finish all of the functionality and I'm ready to compile for android, I run my script, the dirty fix comes to bite my butt now.
I remove the dirty fix hoping for it to work just well on the apk.
Now gradle doesn't find ddmlib.jar, some 15 minutes of troubleshooting do nothing.
Fuck it, I'll just create a new project from the CLI and drag all the code there so that navParams work as expected.
Sorry Ionic, but the world is not our oyster when subtle changes in dependencies produce such unexpected behaviour, with some fucking view parameters!.
I'm looking forward to get done with all the current projects to jump back to native.1
A very frequent topic for rants I see is the slowness and high resource utilization of Android Studio. My first thought whenever I see these rants is, "why not just use a normal IDE or a text editor?" Is Android Studio a hard requirement? Will no other software allow you to edit Java code and assemble it into a usable apk?6
Read about first Android Go device launch will happen lately this month.
Read about restrictions for Android Go section in Google Play.
" - RAM usage less than 50Mb"
With removed Google Maps (they decided to replace with something lighter later) and without stripping functionality app barely fits 64Mb.
With Google Maps it takes 150-200Mb.
Today found Google Maps Go apk.
It's fucking PWA wrapped in apk.
Poll: Go in Android Go stands for...
- Go fuck yourself
- Go learning web development
- Go writing 100 shitapps per second, all with one button
Does anyone have problems with Android instant run?
Fucking hell, I spent one hour yesterday debugging an error, until I noticed that the code in the APK wasn't updated, because it was sending an error of a non-existent line.
Sometimes it works okay, but damn...2
So we develop several apps for Android.
And since the whole company is full of .Net developers we´re using Xamarin.
That piece of software alone is worth more than one rant.
But today someone called and said he updated to the latest version he got from our server.
But now one of the menu points in the settings menu is opening the wrong mask.
I´m like ... what? Who fucked that one up now. Ok...
I look at the code and, I didn´t expect it to be honest, but it looks alright.
The menu point has the correct id. The function "OnOptionsItemSelected" looks for the correct id and opens the correct activity.
Just to be sure I also check the activity.
So I start up an emulator. Deploy the app in debug. Works correctly.
Create a self signed apk and install it on the emulator. Works.
Repeat the same with a tablet and my personal phone. It works.
Then I install the apk from the server and would you look at that.
It opens the wrong mask.
So it seems only if the app is compiled on the release server it shows that strange behaviour.
And for the love of my 1080ti I can´t figure out what causes it...
Thank you Xamarin!
build up the apk like 3 times, just to be sure before the publishing ;)
(now it's out, it is Bongville)1
This happened when I was in the first semester of my study (I'm currently studying Computer Science).
Didn't understand anything, never learned to code before. My first "project" from my lecturer was to write a mini-journal together with two friends of mine (which weren't able to code either) about the link of VR use with the increase/decrease of the user's heart rate.
We didn't find any way to record the user's heart rate automatically and periodically. The deadline was getting closer but thankfully we found an android app that can be used to detect someone's heart rate with the user's finger pressed onto the camera. Sadly the app can't be used to record the data periodically (it can only show us the average heart rate). We told my lecturer (who is supossed to "guide" us here) about the problem and asked him for solutions.
He told us to "modify the .apk and connect it to a database".
At this point, we didn't even know how to make a database, let alone "modify the .apk".
In the end, we used an oximeter, recorded it, and listed the results manually. 😂2
Story time: Once I sent our android developer a project that he was supposed to compile and install on a test device. On my machine everything worked perfectly but on his machine ADB would keep failing to install the apk. After an hour of scratching our heads we figured out what happened:
He had just received a new Chinese action camera from Amazon and plugged it into his PC to charge. Turns out it's running rooted Android and runs ADB Debug mode by default. So the build script would try to deploy our phone app to his action cam instead of our test device5
So, I'm starting cross platform mobile app development with NativeScript. Just side projects at the moment, nothing "business-related".
Well, as for the Android part, I'm free to choose whether I'd like to develop on Windows 10- or on my Linux machine. I can compile the project on either system. As for publishing it to Google Play, I might do it, I might not do it, since it is possible to install an app by providing the apk file.
As for the Apple part: I'd either have to buy an completely overpriced Apple computer (iMac, MacBook, etc.) or subscribe to a pricey online CI/CD service... just to be able to compile the fucking project. And if that wouldn't be enough, Apple wants to charge me 99 $ a year so I may have a chance to publish the app to their App Store... of course without any guarantees that my app will be published, because it might be revoked by them. WHAT THE FUCK?5
I broke my phone so now I've revived an old S5360. Does anyone happen to have a devRant APK for Android 2.3 on ARMv6? I figured if Facebook doesn't work then it's high time I start binge scrolling devrant instead.3
So i was putting finishing touches on an android game i was building in Unity3D as a fun side project - implementing google play leaderboards and google ads.
Luckily google is nice enough to include 2 unity plugins for ads and leaderboards/achievements however, THE FUCKING PLUGINS AREN'T COMPATIBLE. TWO PIECES OF SOFTWARE THAT ARE LITERALLY MEANT TO WORK TOGETHER HAVE COLLIDING .JAR FILES PREVENTING ME FROM BUILDING THE APK.
i had to spend fucking days trying to figure out how to unpack the jar files and what to remove from them so they would stop colliding.
Every. Single. Time.
Push APK to device. Runs.
Make code change. Try to run - but device not shown in ADB list.
Only this sequence works, and not every time:
1. Turn off USB debugging on device
2. Turn off debug mode with toggle on device
3. Turn back on debug mode, then toggle USB debugging
4. Wait for prompt, allow debugging from computer.
If I check remember this computer, then I need to add the extra step to revoke authorizations.
Why. WHY Can't I just push to my device while its plugged in more than ONE TIME4
hello friends i building my first app support me and install it ;
Made with ♥️ 😂
Me (Km) - I develop android applications in my company.
TM - Dumbest technical manager taking care of backend for company products(app).
PM - Product Manager
Incident - PM went to some event to give demo on our App but due to some backend issue there was wrong data for his account. PM reported this TM. And the conversation between Me and TM went like this.
TM : Km app is not working for PM, its not showing anything to him.
Me : Okay let me check...
I logged in with PM credential and checked the logs and i found that there was some error message saying that there was no data. I copy-pasted the error message to TM.
After few minutes (TM added dummy data to PM account)...
TM : Km app is working now, what was the issue for not working previously ?
Yes she asked me like this even though it was related backend issue.
Me : Its backend issue...!
TM : But I did'nt change anything at backend.
Me : Neither I, I did'nt build new APK and uploaded to Crashlytics Beta and he(PM) is not using new build.
I copy-pasted the previous error message again and asked her (TM)
Me : Why was this error message coming ?
TM : There was some wrong data for his account, So i added some dummy data.
Me : (FacePalm) How come its not called as change in Backend.
The worst part is TM still thinks it not a backend issue.
For some weeks now I've been having strange compilation issues with Android Studio on Windows 10. Some of my builds fail with funny errors that have only 1-3 StackOverflow entries. When I switch to Linux (Pop!OS) it complies without errors apk gets installed on device. At some point I was frustrated where I spent a whole day trying to figure what's wrong only at night to code using Linux and it compiled. What's up with Android Dev on Windows?3
Tody I finally decided to go Google free in my device. Now I have 0 Google services in my phone and so far I'm loving it.
All apks can be found on apkmirror and f-droid but devRant is not available on any of those platforms so I have to restore my previous backed up apk from playstore.
Yeah and I'm not on any socialmedia whatsoever like FaceCrap and InstaHeadache. Feels like my phone would last for 2 days on single charge.2
Sonuva bitch thought he's so smart. He made a mod of a game, and a launcher for it, APK while bullshitting that "Games shouldn't have IAPs because it's just a game". I got ticked off, I called him out for bullshitting, he got ticked off, I asked for proof of the mods, this is what he gave me. It's on an iPhone mind you, and he said he made an APK. My fucking god. I sworn at him with another programmer friend for a solid 10 minutes, breaking the community's rules 20 times over non-stop (I'm Moderator so.... (not Reddit, Discord (Yes mom I use Discord (Yes I moderator)))). My fucking god. AT LEAST MAKE SOME FILES INSIDE WHILE YOU'RE BULLSHITTING US! OH WAIT! YOU CAN'T! YOU'RE NOT JAILBROKEN YOU PIECE OF SHIT! (more in the comment)6
When I moved to another company there was Android app, with 5K lines of HTTP Service class, with apache legacy library, with maven and tons of garbage.
now, it has gradle, multiple build types, flavors, multiple source sets, RxJava, Java 8, ButterKnife, modular dependency, I always do profiling and APK analyze and tons of essential and cool features.
Project started last year but what the heck?
Dude, I will find you,and I will kill you!
!rant, but funny
tl;dr I made something that was to protect me in case the customer doesn't pay, wanted to check if it's still there, messed up a little :D
>do an Android app project for almost 6 months
>issues with payment for it
>"Add new application"
>add single integer variable
>back to app code
>if (integerFromFirebase != 0) navigateTo(new Fragment())
>but they ended up paying me in the end
>see another post on how to secure yourself if customer doesn't want to pay
>well, consider yours as more sophisticated
>hmm... wonder if they removed it
>app still works fine
>mhhh... they removed it? really?
>can't fking believe it
>search for the app
>decompile dex file
>find the fragment
>can't find the code that navigates to blank fragment, but the config fetch is still there
>look at the app
>SHIT ITS NOT WORKING NOW XDDDDD
>changed the variable back to 0
>found out that the lambda in which I navigate to the blank fragment is in other .java file. New thing learned :v
>idk if I'm in trouble but I highly doubt it (console shows max 10 active users atm)
Was fun tho :v3
Not sure if Google is surprised this happens or they really never face issues using Gradle
Took 4 minutes to compile a basic flutter app. But it takes 1.3 minutes to compile a native app. So far liking flutter, still hating React Native tho1
F-Droid can't even download apps properly. It's fucking 2019 and you haven't figured out how to download files in background?! What are you, F-Droid devs, braindead?5
Sometimes, certain features don't work in my app if it's uploaded to the production track in Google Play.
It works in debug mode.
It works in release mode.
It works in the internal testing track.
...but it won't work in the production track? Y'know, the one that actually matters? Theoretically, there shouldn't really be a difference if the same exact APK was uploaded to the internal testing and production track, but... idk dude.
As a result, I implemented a secret way to test a feature in the production build (it's an app to remotely control OBS Studio): if the first connection you added is named "yayeet_" and you open the disclaimer, it tests the feature. Luckily, I got some of the stuff figured out, but I just thought the way I had to test it in production was dumb.1
I have to test my App on a Samsung Galaxy Young 2. Can someone please shoot me?
It took over 3 minutes to install the APK and now it can't even get an IP from our AP. 😐4
You know what kivy?
F* you, and your incoherents errors, I been trying to package a hello world app to apk and you can't even find the Aidl that is already installed? For real?!6
"hey, so we want to put our app inside another app, but don't give them the source code. so can you make an apk that they can just put inside theirs, by EOD?"
Took me > 2 weeks to convert it into a library project ( :ﾟ皿ﾟ)
help with the ui for my app?
it pretty much just gives you a word a day. they frontend is functionally complete, but it looks pretty ugly. any ui ideas? (the backend isn't complete so only test data is being returned by the server)
it's android only right now, because i cannot afford to compile it on ios
i'll put the download link in the comments8
Yesterday I installed linageos without gapps and wondered if there is an official release of the devrant apk without Google store. I acquired my copy from apkpure
Let's say you're building an application for a very specific android device, and you know exactly what it comes with (OS, architecture, Graphics libraries, RAM, ecc)
I can't really make HUGE changes to my code, but since I'm working with unity, I cant make some changes in the way the APK is built.
So let's say my device is ARCH64, uses OpenGLES3.1 and has 4GB of RAM, what are the improvements in making the APK for 64bits instead of 32?7
Would somebody be willing to get on skype or something and explain Stripe Connect (Python Apk, preferably) to me. Not understanding how to implement it is destroying my willpower.
Spend an entire day on getting an auto-update feature into my cordova app...
APK installer doesn't open, error message doesn't give me any solutions...
exposed beyond app through Intent.getData()
Hey guys. Days ago I was working in some "Unity2d animation test". You can download the demo apk and see the code here: https://github.com/Marks7e/Test
Give me your feedback please ♥️2
Is there a way to get devRant for android without google play?
Sites as APK mirror normally have all free apps, but I see devRant is missing. And I dont see any other legitimate source which might have the apk.5
I stumbled apon this software called vavoo.to, whith this you can watch Movies, Series, Live TV and more just started to reverse the apk.
Now out of curiosity how the fuck are they doing this with Live TV without hosting it themselves.
They also sell legally their own Android TV boxes with the pirated content from Switzerland. Why can they do this without being fucked from behind??
I will find it out eventually but this is interesting to reverse.
Do apk's keep record of IDE's that was used to develope them.
Pls show your sympathy for a poor dev like me.
A 400 level student in computer science came to me to develop a mobile app for his final year project, i decided to take the deal. i used react-native to build the app. when i finished the project the aim was achieved but then came the biggest stupid question "which IDE was used for the project?" i answered vsCode. then he said "The IDE i was supposed to use was Android studio" i told him that is not a problem i could use any IDE i prefer its all the same all i need to do is set up the enivronment and he answerd "i have failed my project" he lamented i asked why and he said because his lecturer said the apk must be generated from android studio. i understand that the problem was not because i didnt use pure java(android) or because i used react-native(java(android) but because i didnt use android studio to build the app . i began to question my knowledge "do apk files keep record of ide that was used to develope them? pls help me maybe some apk do. i didnt know how to convince him everything was ok because it seems he is not technically incline he just one of those guys who are taught programing on the white board not on a computer and have no real experience. he later accepted to submit the project like that since the dead line is close and hope to see a fat F on his result but later told me he got an A in the project.6
Developing for mobile feels like crap to a web dev (ME). I spend days configuring testing and CD and when the builds and 563 tests finally pass, and I try and download the APK thinking it'll work PSYCHE the app can't open.
1. Android devs, what is the best online SQL server with a free tier and minimal setup, like firebase but SQL ?
2. Android devs, how do you take your side projects to completion?
- Do you use best practises/ extra production libs like dagger/databinding etc?
- Do you work on the ui or just focus on achieving the functionality?
- Do you launch that app to play store/github?
- How much time do you usually give to your side projects?
- If you opensource and upload the apk on github, does your debug apk connected to freemium servers like firebase/aws, and are you worried about that?9
I have an only HTML(CSS and JS) app. I want to put it in Play Store. How?
I saw somewhere Phonegap can convert HTML to apk, but if I do it, will it work well?
I mean, if I want to put google ads or any other ads can I choose where to put them?9
Has anyone had any luck with Raccoon for downloading Android APKs?
The last thing I need Google for on my phone is Play Store, so if this works, my Google account will be totally removed from my phone.
I was new to Android development back then. One of the project requirements was to implement a feature, that will prevent the users from turning off the phone. Even if the users tries to turn off, the phone shouldn't turn off (specially when the phone battery is sealed). So, I tried a method and it works! But later the users reported that the feature doesn't work! I mean, I can clearly see that the feature works in all the phones I have ever tested. But later I realized that the feature worked in Debug APK but not in Release APK. I mean, seriously? It's not even some kind of pro-guard issues that happens with GSON+Parcelable. So, I did it again using a new method. Again, it works in Debug but not in Release. After trying and failing multiple times, finally I found a solution! May be this bug alone took me almost a week to fix it!2
I'm thinking of building an open-source React Native app for DevRant just as a fun project. I came across an unofficial API documentation and also a wrapper.
If anyone has used these, kindly let me know your experience and which one is better.
PS: I have no intention to publish or earn money from this project. Anyone who is interested can jump into the project and help in making it better. If enough people want to use it, I can compile an apk/ipa for people to download later on.
I'm rewriting an entire activity of a messaging app. I'm suffering a lot.
ListViews, Databases, Sending/Receiving from server...
And no, I can't reuse code. The original activity is from a decompiled APK, so it's smali code.
i wonder... when I'm using Share-it to share the apk file of my android project, it is always failed to install to the mobile that i'd shared. you guys encounter that?
Now to figure out how the fuck JASM works so i can rewrite a routine in someone else's APK in Python. Also how the fuck does ECDSA work? Also what format is this fucking cert it's applying in?
Me just now:
> finishes adapting an app for my purposes in android studio
Time to export a signed apk!
> successfully locates the keystore I generated a year ago
> even remembers the passwords
Nice! Now I can finally close Android Studio!
One second after I close it:
Shit, I forgot to enable dark mode
> reopens android studio
(The dark mode normally becomes accessible through in-app purchases, but since I built the app from source those don't work)3
