What a beautiful morning.
Heard my phone going crazy because of notifs.
Turned on DND.
Made myself a coffee.
Drunk the coffee.
Looked at phone.

Really good morning.9
It's the biggest satisfaction to know that Wix means wank in German!
"why not do it yourself" just adds to it.6
I just got my first set of D&D dice! I know it’s just some metal polyhedra but I’m really happy to have them!15

The next time you see developers wearing headphones, please understand that it's our most polite of saying:
"I'm in the freaking 'zone'. Don't you dare disturb my rhythm in coding and lose my momentum. Now unless it's reaaally that important, leave it in our group chat/email and I'll read it later."
Tap gently. We're at overdrive when we headbang to music while coding.7
So I've been playing some DnD with friends.
And we've been working with some lego characters, whiteboard markers and plastic sheets to draw on.
But that's always a mess:
The ink was old and did not come off again for the most part
The sides of the map curled up and and made the lego character fall over
The lego characters were too big
So I thought, why not make it digital?
And so I did.
I used UWP to make a master and a client, both using the Windows Ink api to be able to draw.
Some circles with an initial served as characters, and everything was synchronized using a TCP library I wrote half a year ago.
Yesterday we tried it out.
We all (including me) were sceptical if it would work well because the 'analog' clumsy way we did it before does have a certain charm.
But at the end we were all very enthousiastic about it and we'll be using it next time too!
It's awesome to be able to create programs for your own use :D
That's why being able to program is such a great thing!
Now I need to restructure everything, make it more efficient, add a turn order display, make the map zoom- and moveable and more and more....20
DevRant makes me really proud how well developers can act together as a group. Makes me think what we could accomplish if we would take all the world's developers and programmers to one place and make our own country. Our currency will be devCoin. World domination follows shortly afterwards14
How my lecturer drilled JS syntax into us:
var x = document.element;
x.value = 10;
Instead of this:
document.element.value = 10;

That moment when you're finally getting your user registration and login system up and running!
As a web dev student I feel like I have accomplished something :)10
Had my pure PHP web app rejected on a market platform because I didn't use a framework..
BITCH IT WORKS PERFECTLY WITHOUT A FUCKING FRAMEWORK, IF YOU WOULD HAVE TESTED IT YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT!22
Started part time job at a company, had to log my time on timesheets. Said fuck this and now the whole company logs their hours on a custom web based time logging system which I built.5
I saw an article about being able to set your phone to silent with your Google Home device. "Wow that's cool. Hey Google! Set my phone to silent."
Forgets about it.
This morning I noticed I was getting messages on Snapchat, but not getting any notifications.
"Snapchat is a piece of fucking garbage." (Still a true statement lol)
Half an hour later, I remember I set DND on and never turned it off.
Just here to say that I am a fucking moron.
I'm Stux and thanks for coming to my TED talk.4
Our teacher just told us to share our code via drive or dropbox or something like that, and I was there like "hey ever heard of git?????"8
Damn maintenance windows. I mean, I get that the SaaS product my boyfriend works on can't go out in the middle of the day. But he just spent weeks on a business trip, with an absolutely mad sleep schedule because he's redesigning their data center (or something. Don't ask me, it's a hardware problem...) and now he's finally coming home today and I'm super excited but all he's going to want to do this weekend is sleep. Even though I'd love to spend Sunday going to this yearly event, or finally getting another round of DnD in (everyone else in the group is available). But nope. Bloody all-hours work is taking away his (and thus my) weekend too.2
So our HR have recently started to enforce arrival/departure time while also giving us a room for freedom (we can be at work from 7:30 till 9:00 and leave accordingly from 4:30-6:00)
So 2 weeks ago my manager asked me why on a date I didn't checkout/checkin, I looked out in my vacation log and sure enough it was a day off. I said to myself maybe be ause this day was requested last year they didn't remember it no problem
Anyway fast forward to today and my manager asked me why on the 25th of January I left (early) at 1?
What? I don't remember leaving early except for one day last week (Feb 7-personal reasons and was requested days before)
So i check my vacation log to see if I forgot something and i see that Jan 25 is a Saturday. We don't work on Saturdays! I go and check with my manager telling him that.
Then it hits me. I checked my taxi app and on Sat Jan 25 I had a ride at 1:22 AM!! from work to home. Yes i remembered that on that day I had to stay late for a project
Sorry for the long post4
Definitely Dungeons & Dragons.
One of the oldest geeky fantasy roleplaying games and I love it.
My first teacher teacher at my bachelors got me into it. Tried it out and I've need addicted ever since.8
Secretly installed Automate app on my friend's Android phone to mess with him. (For those who don't know, with Automate you can automate anything on an Android device).
Made a 'flow' that would read his incoming sms's, and send an email to me with his exact location if I sent him an SMS saying 'where are you?'.
Was funny to mess with him and tell him his exact location even though we were miles apart.
Cleared it up for him a while later but it made me feel like #hackerman8
Last night I had a panic attack and woke up in cold sweats because in the dream I had I was constantly using the wrong variables in the wrong places...
Can anyone recommend a nice set of DnD dice for a gift? It's for my boyfriend's younger sister. She's just getting into it and we're all playing on her birthday.
There's cheap sets everywhere and I'd like to get her something of nice quality.7
If you've ever used Vue.Draggable and been as frustrated as I have, try Vue Smooth DnD. It works flawlessly and syncs properly without relying on DOM state. Just what's necessary for true reactive drag and drop. 😁5
When I used to code I'd use the Pomodoro Technique.
It helps me get tasks done more quickly and efficiently when I know I only have to focus for 45 minutes and then I get a 15 minute break.
It also helps if you're stuck on something, because when you come back to it you have fresh eyes.
Also, music without any lyrics helps me focus better than music where someone is singing. Be it Mozart or dubstep, as long as there are no words I can work with it. 😂 (I highly recommend Instrumental Core)
Finally, my phone would be in a completely different room or in my desk drawer in DND mode. I set it up so that it only rings for certain people (parents, brother and boyfriend), so no-one can bug me while I work. It's fantastic.
This is a funny one:
So I’m in school and it’s time for midterms. Our assignment is spending 3 months building an application of our choice, what did I choose?
A social media application in Kotlin
(I’ve never used kotlin i just thought it’d be fun to learn)
I get to my first class/build review and everyone else smarter than me chose calculators, timers, dice rollers, and dnd glossaries why am I like this3
Analog mail still works!
Stickers finally arrived! Thanks @dfox and @trogus for this amazing community !1
Just resurrected my old Galaxy Nexus with LineageOS. It's still shiny af even on Android Nougat.
Speaking about almost 6 years old device. 😍2
Deadline in 24 work hours, for a in-house product to automate payment processing.
Why in 24 hours you say? , Me and the accounting guy is going on vacation on Friday.
Will it go into production on Friday evening while I'm going through the door?
Who of you play/like Tabletop RPGs more than computergames RPGs?
I personally hate it when i dont have the freedom to be the character I want to be in a digital RPG.
So I started looking into Dungeons and Dragons a few years back and finally decided to start playing Pathfinder because it was gaining more and more popularity.
So do you play tabletop RPGs, if so how did you get introduced to it?12
The sorting button on devRant's feed page is just Gilfoyle's tattoo twice, once upside down like Dinesh says.3
The AMD song, to the tune of Sam Riegel's DnD Beyond jingle:
You got the perfect casing
Its drive bays and supplies
But you need something to run your stuff
Cause you're late for that deadline
You click open a web page
You've heard about Phoronix test suite
And now you see a red company rise
In a field of blue and green
It's AMD! (AMD)
Yeah! AMD Radeon!
Yeah! AMD! (AMD)
Yeah! AMD Radeon!
You've got your motherboard
You've got your processors
And you've got Socket AM4!
It's AMD (AMD)
A chinese pocket watch
A box with figurines, pens and die for DnD.
A box of pendrives
Guts of a laptop
Two identical bottles, one full of vodka, the other water
Five coffee cups
Thomas the cockroach in a sealed bottle. I found him today and I'm waiting for him to suffocate because he can fly and he's 6cm so I'm not gonna risk letting him out by opening the bottle until he's definitely dead.2
Well ... a few minutes ago i tried to make a discord script wich is changing my status from idle to dnd to online and so on, in an infinite loop, all good until i checked Task manager and saw how much memory is using. my bad i guess in the way i wrote everything
My college apparently needs their hand held and be gently guided through everything they're being paid to do to get me ready for classes:
First attempt to get registered: Never got my student ID. Missed 1/3 of the semester since they completely forgot to process me.
Second attempt (current):
Took 3 weeks to get ahold of the college at all, took another week to get in to see an academic advisor (had to come in and wait 6 hours for that day, without leaving, to see one. They weren't busy, they went DND all day and 6 hours later one was caught doing nothing but playing games for 6 hours.) Vocational Rehabilitation was supposed to pay all but $86 of what grants wouldn't cover (not bad, not bad) but even though Voc Rehab sent it, and got receipt of deposit, they "never got the money". 3 days before classes, found out I have textbooks online I must claim and they never told me about them, however I can't access them as I need them to give me claim codes. They're closed at that point in the day.
It's currently Sunday and classes start tomorrow. What other surprises will I have tomorrow? Who the fuck knows?
Schoolproject teammate refuses to pull my changes in git before applying his because he thinks we're going to have conflicts ?!?!?!1
My coworker, Donnovan, has influenced me the most professionally. Showed me the ropes around HL7 when I had limited coding background. His philosophy of automating as much as possible has been my motto for over a decade, and I make sure I impart that to every new dev I train.2
[off topic] (good thing this isn't stack overflow)
2.5 years ago I moved 35 minutes north of all my friends for a job and only see them about once a year now. I have a wife, kid and a few clients so spending time meeting new people has become a disability.
I have a bar near me that does board games and DnD n shit. I thought I would be able to pop in, make a few friends and play a few games of cards against humanity or something.
Nope. Even though I knew I was the coolest guy in the place (I'm a musician and up til a year ago played bass in rock/metal/90s bands ) , couldn't bring myself to talk to anyone or try to play any of the games. I sat at the bar on my phone, like a nerd.2
We're at that part in the project where we either keep sinking money into it, or cut or losses and go with another project. Sigh.1
dungeon masters of devrant. i'm doing a school project on how to dm dnd and i need to get information from other people. So what tips do you have and are you up for a survay or interview at somepoint in the future4
What's the general consensus around here for a dnd group, dev edition?
(I personally prefer open legend)
Also, does anyone remember the old rpg stuff we had going on here ages ago? Legit miss those.14
I'm dreaming of a web language that is as close to the English language as possible.
nav bar with 5 links
slider with 3 images that runs automatically
Section with 3 images next to each other
Paragraph with first word in red
Footer with menu and sign up form
This would be the shit!6
Neither one of them really *get* what I do, but mom likes to tell me his much she hates whatever program she uses at work as if I control the dev timeline.
Spotify, Things App to list my task, phone on DND and in the other room. If it's really serious I have to go to my favorite coffee spot.
When I was 10 I fell in love with designing DnD type games on paper, and I knew I was going to take that childhood passion and dream and make it a reality
For a while my social life was fuck all due to death marches and poorly managed projects. I’d be so exhausted by the time the weekend rolled around that I just didn’t want to do anything.
Sticking to a healthy work schedule and prioritising family and friends after an 8 hour workday did wonders.
On weekends I just tell me wife that I want to look at technology x for a couple of hours and we plan our day around that.
Also, finding social events I want to attend like DnD made a huge difference.
