My conversation with my wife today, while I was at work:
Wife: The wifi isn't working.
Me: What's it doing?
W: Not working
Me: Try turning it off an on again.
Me: Is your phone on LTE? Or is it connected to wifi and the internet isn't working?
W: LTE. Aubrey (my wife's sister) said she turned it off and nothing happened.
Me: did she turn it back on?
W: Do you really want me to answer that?
Me: Just making sure. What lights are on on the router?
W: (Sends me a picture of the router with no lights on)
W: Oh it isn't even plugged in
W (after a couple minutes): Its working now!
YES I REALLY WANT YOU TO ANSWER IF YOU TURNED IT BACK ON!14
"And on the eighth day God said 'Let there be 4G LTE.' He looked at the 4G LTE and he was pleased."5
“Yeah, the database password has to be ‘password’ or the code won’t work”
Note: I don’t actually believe this to be good advice.1
I know I'm not on wifi. I get it. Sometimes data coverage isn't amazing or the network is congested. It's cool. You can just flash "no service" and I just won't try. or even "3G" and I'll have some patience. I rember how slow 3G was. It's okay, I'll wait.
But fucking stop showing 4G LTE if you can't make a fucking GET request for a 2kb text file in less than 5 minutes! Fucking really? Don't fucking lie to me with your false hope bullshit, just tell me the truth and I'll probably sigh and say shit and put my phone away.
But fuck you and your progress bar externally stuck in the middle. As if to say you're making progress! Wasting my time!
If you can't download a kilobyte in a 5min period, why even say I have data at all? What good does that do me?24
There's not much worse than trying to fix your CSS for half an hour, only to realise that it's a cache issue...10
I don't know what's wrong with my project. But somehow, this is the screening when you debugs a React Native app within DevTools.10
Holy shit. Germany really is a third-world country in regards to connection speeds and reliability. I am visiting my dad this summer, that's why I'm here in the first place. Germany has the most unstable GSM/EDGE connections I have ever seen and everytime I go to Germany, I get reminded of that. Sure, they are slow by design, but in Austria, you can at least use them! In Germany, you
I couldn't even transmit 10 bytes to my Raspberry Pi 3B without interruption, at any given point in time.
I really have to force my phone to stay in WCDMA/LTE mode now... Great stuff.35
I hate interviewing..
The first sentence of the candidate was, that he wanted to speak in english instead of german. Great start if you stated something else in the application.
And his english was even worse than mine.
And as expected from his tags in the application, he had a broad knowledge base. From IoT, LTE, node.js TCP, Java, Ruby, Python, to VLAN and firewalls.
Guess what, he had no in depth knowledge for the required job. Suprise!28
So if Verizon agreed to not SIM lock phones in order to get the the 700MHz Block C license aka LTE Band 13, and now they're SIM Locking phones, does that mean they're going to lose their LTE license?
Just kidding, that'd require an FCC with a spine. But it fucking should.3
Ok is it just me or do GIF never fucking load on Android here on devRant? Like wtf I have a high speed LTE connection at 22Mbs how can it not load a fucking GIF?14
Going to system engineer interview expecting technical questions. Very nervous.
First 'technical' question "what does DDoS stand for?"
Second "what does LTE mean?"
😐😐😐🙄🙄😏🤣😄😅😃 Gonna nail this interview.2
'Twas a fun day today...
Construction workers cut into the fiber line to a medium sized company this morning. We got the splicer guy on site quickly, but it is going to take a while, because the whole cable needs to be extended a bit in order to repair it. We got the company online through a LTE modem for the repair duration. Oh and also had to set up VPN on all PCs to connect to their server in our datacenter. A fun day indeed.10
Translation: Your Computer can have internet access without Wi-Fi, if your computer is a iPad Pro.
Video explains this cutting edge technology named "LTE".
Much innovative, very computer7
Context: one of my dad's friends is a veterinarian and he's opening a new clinic. My dad is renovating the building and I'm supposed to handle the IT part (Ethernet cables, server, laptops etc.).
Last Monday I get a phonecall from the veterinarian (which I'll be calling boss from now on) that he plans to open the next Monday. I ask him what hardware is bought and if anything is already done. As you can probably guess, the only hardware bough are Ethernet cables (with no plugs) that my dad run under the floor half a year ago.
After a brief wtf?! I asked him what he needs. The conversation goes like this (shortened a bit):
> What do you want/need?
< Make it good
< Make it so that the network lasts for years
> Ok, but what do you want? Do you want cameras? WiFi? How many PCs and laptops? What software will you use for client/patient management?
< Yes, I want cameras. Look around and decide where would be best. Clients won't need WiF, so don't botheri. I think one pc and two laptops will be fine.
> Ok, what software do you use? What does it need on the server?
< Don't worry about that. I signed a deal for a monthly subscription. I got a special offer where if I sign it for at least a year I get 10% off.
// We had this conversation about 2 month earlier. I was against cloud software because internet here is flaky at best and if the company goes out of business he loses all client data
> Why would you do that? I told you it's a bad idea because [above comment]
< Yeah, but [his employee] convinced me. He said that with cloud he'll be able to check that stuff even from his home.
> I could've set it up so that he could do it anyway. Whatever, did you get an internet connection to the building?
< Well, I've been considering getting LTE...
> Stop. You already made one mistake. If you also get an unreliable internet you risk having to close the clinic when you lose connection due to storm.
// Here he tried to argue a bit, but I was able to convince him to not do the stupidest thing he could
< Oh, and can you make it so that when I'm here I have internet on my phone and laptop?
At this point I just wanted to smack him in the face.
Anyways, a week and a half later the clinic is still closed. Not just because half of the stuff needed arrived last Friday, but mostly because the building is not usable yet. The renovations on second and third floor haven't even started yet.
And there is still no internet connection. Last Friday I even went to a local ISP (with his permission) to get everything done and he just has to go and sign the contract. When I asked him today about it he said he still hasn't been there.1
So RelianceJio is offering LTE at rates as low as $1 for 1GB data. And totally free calls on its internal network. No roaming too. Promo offer including everything free for 3 months.
And me. I own a 3G device. 🤕🤒17
I am curious whether facebook IS listening to conversations or not.
Living with my girlfriend in a small appartment, yesterday we were talking about some shitty game we both played around 10 years ago, I was wondering whether the game still exists and googled on my phone (via LTE, not wifi) - yeah the game is still online and still the same shit.
Today she saw facebook sponsored ads to this game on HER facebook.
Today we watched a movie (Valerian and the thousands planets) - and there was this ship which looked similar to Millenium Falcon. I noted that in the midtime. After the movie - guess what - opened the facebook abd there was a sponsored ad to buy Millenium Falcon miniature or lego figure.
How? Randomized events? I do not think so. This was not the first time it happened.
Note: we are not native english speakers, maybe "millenium falcon" could be the only catch fb could achieve?16
!rant, but... It’s really nice to live in a country with decent LTE speeds... ;) It’s nice addition to my home 250Mbit DOCSIS connection...17
I've been using Ubuntu 14.04 since it was first released until this moment (June 2018). What a stable OS i've ever used. Thank's Linux, you're free & awesome.
Thank Mr. Trusty & Tahr1
Ok, first rant, about my struggles getting reliable internet over the past 6 years. It's not too interesting of a topic, but here we go:
I'm living in a more rural part of Germany and internet here is shit. I pay more than 50 bucks a month for 700kb/s downstream (let's just not talk about upstream...), which is meh by itself but it gets worse. Before this I had roughly 230kb/s downstream using DSL. My provider came out with a new oh-so-fucking-fancy solution for giving people faster internet without upgrading their lame ass fucking backbone and POS infrastructure from 70 years ago: they sell you hybrid internet which combines your shit DSL and an LTE connection using TCP Multicast. Not only do I get only 6 of my promised (and payed for) 50 Mbit, no, It's also a fucking piece of nonworking shit!!!
Let me illustrate:
You constantly have problems with web content (or any remote content) not loading because the host server does not support TCP Multicast. It either refuses connection altogether or it takes about 30-50 seconds to establish a connection. Think about your live when it takes two or three fucking minutes to load 5 YouTube thumbnails or load new tweets at the bottom of the Twitter page! Also, you never know if you a) have an error in your implementation of a new API or if b) the remote host doesn't support TCPMC (there's never an error for that! Fuck you!), your SSH sessions ALWAYS drop in the most inopportune fucking moments because the LTE thing lost connection, you always have to turn on a VPN if you want to visit specific websites (for example your school's website) and so on....
Oh and also, my provider started throttling specific services again these days with Netflix and YouTube struggling to display 240p, fucking 240p video without buffering when I get 600kbit down on steam (ofc the steam download is paused when watching videos). When using a VPN, YouTube 720p and Netflix HD work like a charm again. Fucking Telekom bastards
Then there is the problem with VPNs. The good thing about them is that they solve all the TCP Multicast problems. Yay. Now for the bad things:
First of all, as soon as I use a VPN, access times to remote go up by like fucking 500%. A fucking DNS lookup takes 8-15 seconds!!! The bandwidth is there but it takes forever.. because reasons I guess. Then the speed drops to DSL speeds after a while because the router turns off my LTE connection when it is unused and it does not detect VPN traffic as traffic (again because... Reasons?) And also, the VPN just dies after an hour and you have to manually reconnect (with every VPN provider so far)
And as if that wasn't enough, now the lan is dying on me, too, with the router (the fucking expensive hybrid piece of shit, 230 bucks..) not providing DHCP service anymore or completely refusing all wifi connections or randomly dropping 5Ghz devices, or.....
You get the point.
The worst thing is, they recently layed down 400mbit fiber in my neighborhood. Guess where the FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT CABLE ENDS??? YEAH, RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY NEIGHBORS HOUSE. STREET NUMBER 19 IS SERVED WITH 400MBIT AND MY HOME, THE 20, IS NOT IN THEIR FUCKING SERVICE REGION. Even though there is a fucking cable with the cable companies name on it on my property, even leading up to my house! They still refuse to acknowledge it! FUCK YOU!!!!
Well anyways thanks for reading. Any of you got the same problems? :/2
So, we've been on Deutsche Telekom for about 9 months. Shitty connection in the countryside but literally not one outage.
For the last 6 weeks our internet has been dropping out with no obvious cause.
Just this week we start getting calls if we'd like to upgrade to a package with LTE...
I'm finding the coincidence just a little too convenient.1
So this will be my first rant/story sorry if it gets too long.
So finished work and I was like finally some days off, went to bed, woke up the next morning, went to near city to take care of some work, went back and I noticed they were digging the ground near my place, as I've found out from neighbors they were changing some pipes, well ok no problem arrived home, sat on my PC to study a bit and do a bit gaming, but guess what?? NO INTERNET well ok contacted the ISP, the idiots told me it will take them 2 days to arrive WTF? is this 2018 or 1918?? I was so pissed off but ok the next day they called me that they arrived, they checked and said that they will need to fix some wires they will return the same day.. so I've waited few hours but no internet, the asholes didn't came, so the next day they arrived and guess what?! the idiots that digged the holes cut the wires, instead of fucking contacting the ISP to ask for supervisor to tell them where they can dig they didn't know what was the fire for and they thought oh well lets cut the fucking wire, and instead of stopping and contacting the ISP about their mistake they continued with the digging and cut the wire at 3 places, so the ISP at the end called the police, the plumbers that did the digging where just laughing, why do you laugh you primitive ashole, even 10 year old would first ask if it can continue if it finds something that he didn't know about it (I call primitive the person not the job title), and the best part is that the idiots not only they cut the wire at 3 places they also took part of it out of the ground and then they filled the holes back! Now I won't have internet for 2 fucking weeks, yes in 2018 this is happening, at that moment I was so pissed, but kept my cool and contacted the ISP to give me LTE USB stick to use it for the next 2 weeks, sadly they couldn't do that wtf??? So I asked politely who will pay the damage for me not working for 2 weeks and they said that they will gladly pay the damage.. So I was confused because that literally meant that they will compassed me for the 2 weeks, so I re-asked are they sure about that and they said yes, so lets see what it will be done, in the meantime I solved the internet problem by using my phone to access internet on the PC.. But still its amazing how primitive people can be and how ISP don't have alternative solutions for such cases, just to point out this sam ISP bragged how they will be among the first to bring 5G when it arrives... Finished my first year of Software Dev. today. It's been tough but I got through it. Does the questioning of this career path ever stop?5
In these dark times, it's inspiring to see that a country as insignificant as Australia can demonstrate to us how things can always get worse.
By passing a law mandating that encryption must be broken, in secret (like the US's National Security Letters), at the demand of the Government, the two biggest parties have colluded to destroy Australia's tech sector.
This is the same government that has been whining endlessly about using Huawei LTE equipment in Australian infrastructure "because it might be secretly compromised". Now the same is true of Australian equipment, by law.
My favourite part of all this is how there will be firmware updates for devices sold in Australia, in order to comply with the new law. How well do you think those backdoors will be secured? How thoroughly do you expect them to be tested, given Australia's population of only 25 million?
How can any Australian company expect customers to trust them now?4
Being someone's IT Bitch sucks. Yes I could just say that I won't help you but that will just make everyone think I am an asshole. It's even worse when it comes to printers. There isn't a single fcking 2D Printer that just 'works' and it isn't my fucking fault.
Then again maybe I am just salty because a girl that I love since I am 13 asked me to get her castrated LTE Router to port forward something so she can play animal crossing online today.... She usually doesn't even respond in simple WhatsApp conversations ..... Ffs I am sometimes feeling like a wreck @ 19 and what for? Just so I know Computers? Math? Science? I know damn well that this post is pure self-pity but maybe its better than drinking myself to sleep....10
I like a Product Manager/Owner/CTO who invites coffee when a dev burnout. This is not a story, a hope seems to be.2
when you realize Ubuntu 12 is not LTE any more.... tought it was going to be forever....Well yeah let's try lte 16.5
everyone is doing home office and I'm sitting here with my LTE connection struggling to even open this page..1
This moment when your internet provider kills your VDSL for four months and offers you a 5GB LTE SIM as a replacement...
Not that I burn through hundreds of gigabytes a month or so...
Gosh sometimes I hate ISPs.
Apparently we quit our contract (we didn't) but they just internally fucked up and nobody could tell us what happened. Finally after directly contacting their management we got service back...
But hey an old laptop at the open window relaying all traffic through the barely receivable WiFi of our generous neighbors at least made devRant available :'D
What do people here use for blogging and hosting? Everything I can find from searching suggests self-hosted Wordpress, but I am cautious because of its reputation in the dev world and since all the guides I have found so far are directed at non-coders. Thanks in advance for any opinions 😊8
Once upon a time, I'm in the process of going to a new job. But in the middle of the recruitment process, it turns out I don't like that company, for reasons I didn't know before.
Anyone have a good idea how to escape this pit?
*My CV has been thrown there6
Anyone interested in the new Asus ROG phone? It looks super thuggish, and is being marketed as a "gaming phone." I think it looks neat, but 6" is way too big for me, there's no sdcard, and no LTE bands have been listed yet.
But it comes with a really cool docking station, which to me, makes it an ideal parsec rig.
What do you think?6
I don't know where to start, but here's the end of my story:
MY GROUPMATE WHO IS AN MENG THINKS LINUX IS A FUCKING PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE. WHY DID MY UNI GIVE A TROGLODYTE AN MENG AND LET HIM WORK ON LTE NETWORK SOLUTIONS5
I encountered some strange programming languages here =>

Ideas I've had over the years that could pan out and be useful:
SMS-DB: Stands for SMS-Data Burst. Used to allow those with low cell signal or no data plan to transfer data between a phone and some client via the standard SMS text space. Would be slow, but would act kinda like dial-up over SMS (as mobile lines are compressed on all service levels, even LTE, so traditional dial-up wouldn't work!) I have a general idea on how packets would be laid out, but that's about it so far...
everything2PNG: Allows one to transpose any file's data into a PNG with a 3 byte per pixel (full color RGB), which allows for a "compression" of sorts (about 91, 93% on preliminary tests) AND allowing further, more efficient compression of the resulting file. (Plus... it's just kinda cool to see files transposed as PNGs.) I actually have a simple transposer to go to PNG, but can't yet go back. Large files (around 600MB) use upwards of 4GB with efficient paging and other optimizations via NumPy so far, so it's not *viable* yet, but it's coming along nicely.
RPi-GPIO Interconnection Bus: A master/slave or round robin method to allow for Raspberry Pis to communicate using GPIO, which can help free up network bandwidth in RPi cloud computing clusters. At most, this'd allow for 4 bits used for pushing to the GPIO "bus", and 4 bits used for pulling from the "bus". 8 pins total are usually unused minimum, so either 3 or 4 pins for upload, 3 or 4 for download, and potentially 1 or 2 for commands, general non-data communication, etc. I made a version of this concept using Round Robin for a client, but it was horribly slow. (I also don't have distribution rights for the code, so i'm working from scratch.) Definitely doable.
Save enough from my current job to give me the buffer to go solo;
and it’s a cliche, but hopefully be making games
I have tried so hard to add some dependencies on react-native (android). Always fails when build gradle, many dependencies are mismatch.
Go fuck my project.2
Indefinite wait at the doctor's office, and the lightweight game that requires an internet connection for its single-player mode for no reason other than that it can decides that LTE isn't good enough, it only wants Wifi, but won't tell you...
I didn't use Windows, but my friend encountered this problem. Anyone knows how to handle it? Thank you
(I am afraid to post to stackoverflow)15
Today's achievement, has successfully told my friend to create an account in Devrant. Guess what? My friend instantly love it.2
AT&T LTE broadband: 25Mbps down, 10Mbps up, $100/month
T-Mobile LTE broadband: 90Mbps down, 25Mbps up, $50/month
straight fucking upgrades out of nowhere11
Almost stuck with manual state management for JS. Dealing server side rendering manually. [almost crazy]
My phone has been in a state where it has a perfectly fine LTE connection but no internet for 2 days. Provider confirmed the connectivity. Failure is on my end.
Time to upgrade to a newer ROM 😒7
Some of you defended samsung galaxy smartphones, but you’re just lucky to get the right one. In some countries (most of them in fact) including Russia we only have samsungs on exynos cpu, that shit overheats and throttles itself down even when you’re watching YouTube. Lte quality is also garbage, s20 ultra literally loses it on arbitrary grounds while iPhone connection quality is flawless.
If you’re happy with your Samsung, chances are it has a Qualcomm soc, not exynos. Qualcomm ones sold in USA for example.
There is no obvious way to tell what soc is there when you buy Samsung. You’re lucky if it’s in fine print. You have to install AIDA and read from there what soc you’re about to buy.4
I can sync saves to and from the cloud on my Xbox One (after a long support session due to some weird shit but w/e it's fixed now) but I can't copy them to/from USB or internal storage, so I can't back them up manually so we have backups after we lose our good internet and switch to basically mobile data at non-LTE 4G speeds at anywhere from 100/500GB a month for 4 people (we don't get to know how much we get until we go over either!)
fucking kill me3
