My college internet sucks!
It was totally fine upto when they blocked facebook and other social networking sites. 😕
Then they blocked youtube! 🤧 Ok, that was fine too!
But now they've blocked Stack Overflow! WTF!! 😭😭
This is the biggest punishment for any computer engineering student.
And there's no one to complain about it!😡😡 They've also blocked Ubuntu forums and several other helping sites! And they expect us to code without using these helpers. FML49
"You claim you are a developer and don't know what firebase is? Pfft"
Words uttered by one of my classmates flexing on some 4th semester college inmates. I don't know what's more annoying his squeaky voice, the pretentiousness of using headphones as a necklace during class or that I was just like him when I was a freshman (minus the low hanging fruit flexing).
God fucking damn, I'm not even mad at his obnoxious pampered kid semblance, it's the irony of this enlightened fago falling into the god forsaken rat race. Why?
Because he hasn't been magnanimously disappointed by one of the most corrupt systems I've ever been witness of, yeah keep talking about firebase to the teacher who just nods pretending she knows what you are talking about.
I've had this same teacher before and your nice asynchronous ES6 express nosql solution will come last compared to all the WordPress templates she'll approve because they are pretty and all the time you invested, yeah, right into the crapper, seriously it would've been more satisfying to just masturbate everyday until Christmas break. I'm not pissed at him, annoyed by his semblance maybe, but I actually pitty him because the system will take a big shit on his face and he's just smiling.
Damn it, all these careers ruined by lazy ass professors who think leaving a shitload of diagrams as homework counts as teaching. And before any quirky brother interjects with "oh maybe your University is shit", "muh University verry gut u suk", you shut the fuck up! I know my university sucks even tho is "one of the best ones" by the corrupt media's standards, I'm here to vent about issues, real fucking issues happening in real corrupt systems, I'm taking about professors sexually abusing students, not going to classes, no centralized teaching systems, fucking chaos.
I'm happy for you if you feel good about the piece of paper you hang on your wall that certifies you as Bobby the guy who not only learned a shit load about computers, he also bent his ass so far for us and payed us so much money for it, it's funny he thinks himself as smart.
I know, I know, you went to an ivy league college, have a wonderful job and owe some money, good for you, some are not so lucky and I'll make sure those lazy asses who take advantage of the system lose their jobs.
I'm so sick of this shit we call "moodern educashion"7
The worst rejection in my case is being qualified for the jobs I get offers for, but not being able to work full time 'cuz college'13
Working with a team of 5 for a college project.
Told them how to use GitHub.
Fuck you and fuck GitHub, they are sending me Dropbox links to download project (npm modules included).
I’m out, fuck this class and fuck college i just can’t6
I managed to do a chunk of programming in class today without my partner to hold my hand through it. It may be simple, but I am proud of it nonetheless.26
This happens so often!
*Lecturer teaching using a ppt*
A slide with literally one basic understandable sentence on it : unnecessarily discussed for 20 min.
A slide with actual important stuff, graphs, definitions charts etc. : Skipped in 5 sec 😑4
Coded in C language for first time (due to college assignments)...
Just found out that there are no strings in c language 😐32
If the java programming language were a human I would lock it in my basement and videotape a timelapse of it starving to death. I hate java. I'm irretrievably revolted by its existence. I actually just threw up in my mouth a little bit thinking about the possibility that there's a chance that I might have to write three lines of it before I die by stabbing myself to death as a result of having to write three lines of code in java. I think I would rather wrestle ten alligators than be within 100m of a computer containing a storage device that has binary code for the jvm stored on it, running or otherwise. I have cron jobs that search my system for any code that is stored in java bytecode format on my hard drives, and purges it with a 41 pass government wipe no questions asked once every hour just because it leaves behind a disgusting taste if it's not properly purified. I turn over and over in my bed when I think that some high school or college student somewhere is learning java and not wearing the appropriate hazmat suit while handling it and their children will be born with horrible deformities because of it. And they don't even know. I'm angry that president trump has not built a wall around oracle corporation and ordered the banishment of all of their employees that have contributed to java for a permanent vacation on Guantanamo bay.
Please say with me the prayer of the gnu:
Oh bless thee gnu that though might purge my computer of lesser proprietary softwares and software specifications, and deliver us to holy lands of free coreutils and runtime environments where our children's children may live without sin and curse the dark age of fucking bullshit languages, in thy mercy; and they will raise thy holy license up on high and say the great gnu prayer as you taught us to say: our father, who art Richard stallman, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy bug tickets be resolved. Give us this day our daily blog entry, and forgive us our sins, as we consider but ultimately pass on forgiving jvm engineers for ruining the world, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from windows, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever amen.
So let's get back to java. It fucking sucks, I despise the fact that anybody believes it holds any advantages over c++ as it's memory model is fucked up in plenty of ways, and many critical bugs have been uncovered and fixed in the garbage collector over the years. It's hated by many. It's father was an investment banker, and it's mother won the Darby.55
Me while strugglin CS College shits
*1st year looking at programming jokes / memes*
Me : I don't get it, it's already hard enough and I must try to understand the jokes? 😐
Me : *strugglin with group projects and wondering why I'm still here*
Me : *strugglin to keepin my grades so I can graduate in time, startin to looking for internships / jobs...
and then...found out there's an app named devRant*
Me again after scrolling devRant for 2 days : "I get it, these whole 3 years studying CS just so I can understand better these programming / dev jokes 😂😂"
*But still stressed out*4
Fuck this system. Fuck college. Why the fuck are you making me write hundreds of chemistry assignments and calculating double integrals? How the fuck does that even help me? I seriously feel like college sucks up a huge chunk of my time and I am not learning anything, while I practice Node and Vue at home. Why does that degree hold so much value when most degree holders don't even have skills?25
I am a french student and I was wondering if college sucks everywhere ...
This is my third college year and I have the feeling that I am wasting my time.
I am in a quite good engineering school but most of the programming courses suck because «teachers» are clueless about the course that they give.
I am not here to tell that «I am better than them blabla» but I just wanted to know if the quality of education has slightly dropped not only in France.
I am really interested in your opinion, feel free to debate in the comments :)22
I have finals next week. I am sitting here learning about things which have no benefit to my career. My college requires me to take Calculus based physics 2, which makes no sense to me at all! I do appreciate physics however I would much rather be coding. In my CS courses you learn theory which is fine, however very impractical. I last October I realized how much more you need to do and a degree just won't cut it. I spend about 50 hours a week learning TDD, git, hashes all this stuff that is not taught in school. Then on top of this I'm learning pointless crap that if I ever needed in a real world situation I would go to Kahn Academy or simply Google it. I'm upset because I have to stop coding for the week to study information I will forget 2 weeks from now, and most likely never use again. I have a job someone offered me which will be extremely beneficial to my career however I have to wait a week to even look at it. I'm just bitter.20
After 10 years of thinking of getting into gamedev, I just joined a team game jam and it's going somewhere.
4 months ago I wrote a rant about how difficult it was for me to get into gamedev.
I guess I finally started because:
a) I'm not doing this alone
b) Another person takes care of the art
Regarding "a", computing, programming can be a very lonely task. I realized how much I missed the college years where I was paired up with other people to do something
There's something magical about being in a team.
You may not be a fan of your mates personalities. You may even hate their guts.
But working on something together, when everyone does the thing they should do, when things just flow... it's just magical.
When that happens, "all the bullshit goes away"™, and it's just you and your team sharing the same hope.
As for "b", I think I realized that, at least for my way of thinking, art (even in an initial, rudimentary state) is what ends up creating a game.
While I always tried to do it the other way around, first the game, then the art.
Maybe now I could dabble into pixel art and then use that as the thing that would define the game.
I was also an emotional mess for most of my 20s (and still kinda am, but not that much), so I guess that made getting into gamedev hard too.
Now, here's the negative part: the guy that does the art (and also codes) sucks balls at communicating and at git.
He takes a shitload of time to respond, doesn't address the things I state are important, doesn't join the damn trello, sometimes gives me some sass on his comments.
And he accidentally overwrote my changes on git three times.
The good thing is that he acknowledges his fuckups and fixes them.
I'm not really mad though. I'm almost 30, he's 20 or so.
When I was 20 I was a goddamn mess.
And it's just a week, and the pleasure of working with someone is far greater.6
That moment when you don't attend classes coz you already know what is been taught in the class and then you get a warning letter for low attendance... Fml4
As a college student, best part of being a dev is when there is no class, but instead of being happy for going home earlier to do whatever like everyone else, my happiness comes from being able to stay late at work, and put that project to roll.
Only developers can feel that.
My college lecturer when someone was having problems with FileZilla:
- Let's go back to Dreamweaver.
I never thought I'd here these words... on the other hand he's using Internet Explorer :(1
My freelance horror story just happened a few weeks ago. Programming final project was due and a classmate payed me to make his project. It was something very simple so I was able to make mine and his different and functional. Grades went up yesterday; he got an A and I got a B+ 🙃 #wk861
So, I was diagnosed with congenital nystagmus at an early fucking age. This is complicated for people who've never heard of it before to comprehend, until they notice the eyes of the person in question. Think of it this way: I lack the biological form of optical image stabilization. Because of nystagmus, I can't fucking drive.
Now, let me tell you, it really fucking sucks. I've never had a girlfriend, never been able to get a job, basically never been able to do the type of shit most of you can already fucking do. Pile that on with college, where I don't really fucking know anybody, and it's really fucking easy to see why I've had depression and nearly fucked my GPA over last semester (2.08, yeah it's embarrassing but fuck it).
That out of the way, nystagmus is rare. So rare that any surgeries to fix it aren't guaranteed to fix the problem, and are only marginally better. I have strong skepticism for any optometrist who acts like they perform this surgery every day, because the numbers simply don't back them up. If there's so few who have this issue, then the amount of operations and opportunities to do them are fucking slim.
Today, my mom came over to Indiana from Ohio, and took me to the local Cheddar's (do other countries have those??). We sit down, and she wanted to re-hash this surgery idea. I have made the statement before that these are the only two eyes that I will ever have, and there's no guaranteed ROI on any procedures, and is probably going to fuck me over if shit hits the fan.
Then she tells me there's this doctor in Maryland. I might be geographically challenged (lol), but I'm pretty sure that's over on the east coast. It's forever from here, we'd probably have to take an airliner.
This doctor made some pretty bold fucking claims. Not only was it possible he could fix the nystagmus, but he could help me use a special form of glasses that would enable me to learn to drive. Knowing that R&D on nystagmus was sketchy because of the aforementioned conditions, I had to tell her that I still don't know how I feel about it. Also, if this doctor moves from Maryland to any of the other states, would he still be allowed to do these things?
I told her I don't know how I feel about it. I'm not sure it's worth the money if we follow through and come to find out it's not enough, and I still can't drive. She acts like this stuff is dead simple. I don't think it is. You have perceived benefits, but there have to be caveats. This would be a major change, and I don't know how I feel about following through with it.9
2 years ago..
Me : How can i learn Java?
College Senior : Do some online courses.
*did a course for a month! Still not confident*
Me: it ain't working for me.
Senior: Do some project.
*Created an Android App under internship! Still not confident*
After wasting my 6 months on Java, i reached to the conclusion that: "Java Sucks" (at least for me)
Me and my project partner were explaining a idea for a smart mirror in front of two of our teachers (female) for our major project of final year.
After telling all the features and things it will do for 15 minutes, one of them very seriously said that,
"so basically you are making a smart mobile app".
We both died a little inside that day... 💀
I know its been quite a while since ive posted last but it is safe to say that i am back! And boy do i have some stuff to bitch about.
This semester, Im taking mobile app development as a class. I chose to take this class over the introductory c# class, so that i wouldn't need to work with Windows or really do anything else to touch Windows. Well the joke is on me. Here i was thinking that we would be using a bit of Java from time to time while only really learning best practices and concepts.
Never did i think that this class's curriculum would be entirely based off of Xamarin.
Seeing as I need either this class or the two c# classes to graduate, I had to bite the bullet and just accept that my semester would be full of irritation during this class.
Its been about seven weeks in, and i have turned in 8 assignments.
All 8 of those assignments have been Windows Form Applications doing simple shit like dividing two numbers.
We have not made anything for multiple devices. We have not made anything for even one mobile device. We have not even discussed how to do this in the class.
This wouldnt bother me so much since these are typically easy programs that take about 30 minutes to make and test and submit for grading. It does insanely bother me, however, that it takes Windows so FUCKING LONG to boot, or when it freezes every 2 minutes because i clicked into another program, or it just HANGS ON THE UPDATING SCREEN AT 36% FOR THREE DAYS, or when it took 4 different reinstallations of Visual Studio 2017 before i could actually open without an error code.
College, Ive learned, tests my patience way more than it has ever tested my knowledge.2
I've worked for 2 firms with billion dollar revenue on contract basis in last years, but I'm still a year away from graduating.
It feels suffocating when after a great night of work I have to go to class among people who don't care about programming at all
I just want to graduate and leave this place...
Ps. Attendance is compulsory in my college and I take computer science classes
Pss. I already make thrice of the highest package in offered in my college for last three years!5
Leaving my work in the soul crushing dog eat dog world of transportation and logistics for higher education software for colleges and universities .
I work at a college and I fucking love it and love my team.
The soulc crushing dog eat dog world of transportation and logistics where I worked as a backend developer and lead mobile developer. Not only did it made me hate and despise native android development, but it also made me despise the human race as a whole. Watching a motherfucker letting go of employees that he knew personally (as in bbq with their families and shit) because my software automated a large portion of their work(it was meant to make it easier for them for that i was originally told) was absolute and total bullshit and i still carry that fucking remorse with me. After that I vowed never to do that sort of bullshit work again....sort off. No one gets fired at this institition for it. Logistics sucks big monkey dick and the people there are the absolute fucking worst. Every single motherfucker i met was a fucking shark, all of them and they would not think about fucking people over if it saved them some money.
Yeah, that even tops the military and that was fuuuull of fuck fuck games and other similar fuckery.2
GOD DAMN IT COLLEGE YOU DID IT AGAIN. for real college can go suck Satan's 50 inch red cock for all I care.
A professor asked me to design a processor and I'll get a bonus. I said okay cool nothing hard.
oh but it has to be in verilog.
oh and it has to be on this fucking ancient useless piece of shit called xilinx that the fucking college provides to you only via a fucking 50 gigabyte virtual machine.
sigh. okay..... challenge accepted.
It fucking crashes every 2 minuites. And after 3 days of no sleep. I finally finished the Alu, Control unit, 4k memory, 8 registers and the busses.......... BUT THEN THE ENTIRE VIRTUAL MACHINE CRASHED AND LOST ALL PROGRESS...... fml.
and the professor only gave me the bonus for the Alu. sigh. fuck college.12
When you know more programming language than your teacher... but not because you're good, just because he sucks!
Reminds me of this question: it only happens once in a while or you had you guys experienced same feelling? How did you do to turn around that in your college?2
So, I'm supposed to do a project in Haskell that is due next week. It's a group project and it's me and 2 colleagues. Unfortunatelly one of them had to drop college because of some personal problems. I feel bad for him.
The thing is, the other one has no clue what Haskell is. I mean, he has no clue how programming is. He doesn't even know what an array is, like, wtf.
Sure, I can do the work all by myself and take the credits for it. But he's a nice guy and has been asking me to teach him Haskell in my spare time. He even told me to tell the teacher I did the project all by myself.
I'm kind in the middle of an existencial crisis. What should I do?
Life sucks, dam.8
When you got to get through the swarm of elective classes to get to the meat of the bones in a Software Development degree 😤
How many times do we need to take Math in order to get across that we only use like 1/4 of what is actually thought and apply it to IRL scenarios?!
My FASFA is gonna run dry at this rate and I just wanna start these Software Development classes already 🙄😭🙏1
i hate this fucking life so much why do i have to fucking exist WHAT IS THE FUCIJG POINT OF DOING SOMETHING YOU HATE WITH PASSION DOIMG AND NOT DOING WHAT U WANT TO BE DOING I DO NOT UNDERSTA D THIS LIFE
THIS existence/life is the Biggest BITCH i have ever fucking met FUCK YOU
CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL DOING SOMETHING YOU HATE.
there was a philosopher who said "this life is pain and the only purpose of living is to reduce this pain as much as possible in order to be more happy" WHAT THE FCUK THAT IS MORE DEPRESSING THAN HAVING A FKIG CANCER
WHY DONT I JUST GET SOME INCURABLE DISEASE INSTEAD OF LIVING? OR GET HIT BY A CAR?
I AM SO FUCKING NOT IN THE MOOD FOR ANYTHING
as i was writing this rant by coming back from ffffffftffffffffffFFFfFFFfFFFFCKING college i went into a bus and there was a woman in front of me with an english text on the back of her shirt saying "she believed she could so she did. she designed a life she loved." WHAT
THIS WAS PUT IN FRONT OF MY FACE AT RANDOM SPONTANEOUSLY
DID GOD JUST GIVE ME A FKIG SIGN OR SOMETHING?? "MY LIFE SUCKS RIGHT NOW BUT I CAN TURN IT INTO THE LIFE I LOVE" IS THAT WHAT A HIGHER SPIRITUAL BEING IS TRYING TO TELL ME RIGHT NOW???
WHAT IS THIS
HOW DO I FEEL RIGJT NOW
I DONT GET IT
Lol. Had an exam in college a few weeks ago which involved designing a website on expression web. The Dr responsible for the subject dropped my file and gave me a 0 as a grade and said : "well it's not my fault I lost your file." I laughed so hard XD. Still has a 0 though Lmao.
What are the chances of landing any kind of job in the software field without my CS bachelor's degree completed?
Cuz I'm so tired of the impractical bullshit I've had to do in class for the last 2 or 3 years. I just don't get why the University does not prepare people to work in dev teams yet it seems to be a prerequisite for any consideration to be hired in the field.
Edit: I'm quite familiar with programming and learn quickly. But is that not sufficient?6
The feeling when you are very interested in Al, ML and want to do projects for college using tensorflow and openAI........
But you only have i3 with 4GB RAM plus 0 GPU.
That sucks.... 😶7
Wrote a PLSQL exam yesterday.
Had to do it on a sheet of paper instead of using Eclipse (which we normally use in lessons)
My brain :
kernel panic - not syncing
It was the worst exam I’ve ever taken😅4
If you're gonna not put up with bullshit and drop out of college once and for all, what should you do to ensure you have the proper skills and network to get a job?3
Finished the semester in college two days ago and now u have a 3 months break.......
aaaand I'm bored already. I don't even have anything to rant about XD
Not having a summer job sucks.2
Can someone plz tell me that are subjects like OOAD(object oriented analysis and design) or requirements engineering actually useful in real projects and jobs...?3
So today in college, working on some C program, wrote a nice program just to get compilation error in header file😥😥1
So I'm here after a long break coz my life is shit all over again, and only devRant allows me to rant officially.
I was selected by a recruiter visiting our college in very early days of the campus placements, September last year,
I wasn't allowed to sit in any of the other recruitment drives by the college, even when I didn't really like the job profile I was in
The company is taking 12 tests and wants me to work on 3 Projects of bootstrap, rails, and react each, before they give me joining.
Here I am working like an asshole with all frustrations after my college got over to finish the tasks without a penny.
This frustration is only causing more and more delay in my work.
Haven't gotten it yet, still in college working towards it, but from the way a good number of people are making it sound, it's not that worth it. Probably going to drop out when my scholarship dries out at the end of spring 2020. It's a four-year scholarship, but I'm probably not going to graduate in spring 2020 based on the grades I'm getting in my math and physics classes.
Side note: I'm taking Computer Organization and Architecture this semester and it's making me want to jump off a fucking bridge.1
So Im still a college student but my worst burnout happened a week before finals this year as a sophomore at DigiPen
On the same week, I had to conduct and submit 10 playtests for my competitive Unity game by Friday, submit said game polished and completed on Sunday, finish and submit my team game project that I've been working on the whole year with 10 other people also on Sunday (which we would discover so many TCR submission issues we ended up finally resubmitting on Thursday the following week).
On top of this I had to write a memory manager for my operating systems class due Thursday, a water retainment assignment involving recursive queues for my Data Structures class due Saturday, and to top it all off that class also had a final Thursday when that memory manager was due :'). I don't know how I managed to get OK sleep.
All stuff was due that week so all game teams could have next week before finals to work on submitting, so some CS teachers also move their finals to before that to theoretically distribute the load (which sucks for people in my major because we're almost a double major for CS and Game Design) However my team wanted to submit early to snatch some bonus points but we ended up having to resubmit late anyways :(. Due to the week of hell we were already burned out when trying fix our resubmission.
I love the school and the people in it but there's a reason why our most heard phrase is "I want to die" and no its not just a millenial thing I swear.
For those who graduated, how the heck do you people do it? I'm on the verge of failing and/or having to retake Calculus AGAIN! I thought that if I could retake it, I would do better. But nope, now instead of getting into that really good tech school in a couple years, I'm a fledgling developer stuck in commonunity college with a 2.9 GPA and not a single project finished. Every decision I make has an exponential affect on my future, but right now, I got nothing. I can't see myself going anywhere else or doing anything else than software development. I'm not quitting, but that isn't enough anymore. This is a nightmare.3
Workin on Group Projects (consists of 3-5 people) while studying in College :
- there's always that one guy / woman who fulfills as a "solo player"
- the others :
act as the entertainer of the group,
the accomodators of food and/or place,
the report printer,
etc. you name it 😂...
comments below for some additions
I can't help but stress out about finding work in development. I just want an internship / entry level summer position to put myself in a better position for post college and to explore and learn in new environments. But it seems like my best chance for scoring that internship is building a solid portfolio or experience, something that I haven't had time to do..
I wrote my first line of code (that wasn't HTML or CSS) when I got to college. Since then almost all my time has gone into my cs engineering curriculum and working a real shitty blue collar job during breaks (for 4 years now) because Im broke and got denied by the 20+ positions I applied for. I can't really do anything with the code I wrote for my schoolwork because I can get fucked if I post it anywhere or share it. I have loads of ideas, but am worried that they are too big to do while maintaining my GPA and scholarships. It sucks too because I am a quick learner, and would even venture to call myself good at what I do.
So since I have hardly been able to pursue any independent studies, I haven't been able to really explore the field, so I don't even know what to areas i need to focus on to make myself a better candidate. So basically I'm broke, don't have shit for pet projects, don't know what I want to do with my life, and can probably expect to work like a dog next summer too because I've heard most companies hire for the summer in the fall.
I don't write this because I feel bad for myself. I write this because it's likely that most people here have been in a similar situation. I also don't like to make excuses for myself like I have been doing. Any advice folks? What should I be doing differently?3
In my college project I am stuck with dumbos. I thought because of of experience in industry I would make them learn something. They don't anything other data entry, a lot of which can be automated. And I work the code which involves building APIs and 2 different Android apps. They are 3 and I am one. Till today they never bother to install the dev environment. Today I told them to get their laptops so they could connect to my laptop server and work with it. But no one bothered to get their laptops. All of them were using my one laptop. Can you imagine 3 people sitting on one machine instead of 3. And I have to sit there doing nothing😑. I went out to chill for sometime knowing that I could do nothing useful without my laptop. And when I return I find that instead of adding new entries, these people kept on editing old entries.🤦🏻 I mean how dumb could anyone be. Power of 3 brains. I can handle 0 work done, but this is negative work. I could done it myself by writing some automation script. And these people tell people behind my back to my friends that they do all the work😡. I have reached the limits.2
Is there any way to make software engineering an interesting subject, instead of just theory that we have to study as an undergraduate student?1
