One of my favorite aspects of devRant has always been getting to learn more about the awesome people who use it. Beyond just the awesome stories posted by many here, one of my favorite ways to learn about and feel connected to the people here has always been desk/setup reveals. I personally love seeing different kinds of setups from all over the world, knowing that’s what the people here use to do their work and compute in general.
As an experiment, we want to try a few different things to highlight desk/setup/remote coding location posts. First, we’ve created the first devRant Instagram account, which is completely focused on developer desks/setups/workstations/remote coding. Please check it out here and follow: https://www.instagram.com/devdesks/
I want to use the account to bring more attention to the wide assortment of setups the awesome members of the devRant community post from all over the world. We’ll promote cool desk/setup/remote work images that are posted on devRant to the Instagram account for more exposure/additional audience.
Beyond that, I also want to try to come up with a way to better organize all of the desk/setup posts on devRant and encourage more of them. One kind we don’t see that often that I personally really enjoy is people coding with their laptops in locations that show the culture of their country or something special about the region they are from. Personally, I’m going to try to post some of those for where I live and work.
So how can you help with this effort? It’s easy! We encourage people to post their setups/working remotely pics and we will start featuring them on the Instagram account and hopefully elsewhere in the devRant app for some increased visibility/searchabilty over what we have now (since pics are kind of hard to search).
Also, we plan to make the weekly rant this week “post your setup,” so maybe wait until then to post, and you can work now on getting that awesome shot :) I know a lot of people here love photography like I do, so I think that part is fun too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the desks/setups of many more devRanters in the next few days!
P.S. not a requirement, but one thing I think makes these photos better looking through a lot of them is when there is code visible in some way.52
So, I needed a package installed on one of our Unix servers. The package manager--which is obsolete garbage--was failing with a message which can only be described as a variant of "Go fuck yourself". A quick Google search didn't help.
3 espressos and an eternity later, I have descended into a manic state. My hair has turned grey and I have started lactating. As a last-ditch effort, I try a new search query on Google, and the first link takes me to a forum with a thread discussing a similar issue. The last post in the thread has a solution which works for me. After fixing the issue, everything in the world feels right and I decide to thank the generous poster, who is like an angel to me at this point.
Guess what? The poster is none other than me. 8 months back, I had created a user account on the forum just to post the solution to a similar issue I had on another server.13
Get ready for the first ever devRant live stream event! @trogus and I will be making an exciting announcement/launch live on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/devrantapp) this Wednesday (October 4th) at 9pm EDT. After the announcement we will also take some questions from devRant users who are watching. The questions can be about the announcement or anything devRant-related in general. We hope to get some fun questions so feel free to ask anything you want.
We look forward to having some fun with our first live stream! If you can't make it, don't worry, the replay will be available on YouTube and we'll likely do some more streams in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions and we hope many of you can join us!
Edit: the stream will be available here once it begins tomorrow: https://youtube.com/watch/... I will also post another announcement rant when we go live!56
I wanted to post a note on devRant community etiquette and rule-breaking behavior we’ve been seeing lately to make clear it will not be tolerated. This is pretty much a rehash of this rant, https://devrant.com/rants/609739/... and also our official rules which I highly encourage people to read: https://devrant.com/rules
I’ve noticed an influx of a select group of members, mostly older users, expressing a distain towards other users or declaring content they dislike “shouldn’t be posted”, “please stop”, etc. If you find yourself about to post that, as per our rules, please don’t. It blatantly violates our rules and we are going to start cracking down on it much more. Whether you have 30k+ points or 10, we will apply the rules fairly to everyone and not give breaks to specific people, which admittedly I’ve done in the past.
If we see this behavior in rants/comments first we will give a warning (and the rant/comment will be deleted) and the next offense is a ban.
A valid question (even though I’ve answered it before) might be why does this need to be a rule? Simply put, it’s a rule for a number of reasons: posts like described try to inflict one’s will upon the entire community (even though we have a Democrat voting process...), they create confusion (almost every time they try to sound official, ex. “Stop doing this”), and beyond those two main reasons, they literally accomplish nothing because they offer no constructive methods of achieving what’s being requested, and only a fraction of the community will actually see it.
Here’s an example of what’s not allowed and what is allowed:
- Allowed: posting an issue on our GitHub issue tracker saying “I really dislike seeing this type of rant in my algo feed, here’s some ideas I have to improve the algo and add more personalization so I can see what I want.”
- Allowed: posting on GitHub issue tracker: “I found this awesome image similarly algo that I think can improve the ‘repost check feature’ - you guys should check it out and see if it might be good”
- Not allowed: “Omg stop shitposting windows update rants and Linux rants I hate them. Go post this type of rant because that’s what everyone really wants to see.”
One is constructive an the other is merely an opinion expressed as an enforcement of a self-made rule on the community and tries to tell other people how they should use devRant.
I cringe when people tell others how to use devRant because without fail when I see those posts, I go through that person’s rant/comment history and I nearly always see them using devRant in some kind of way I disagree with or isn’t exactly what I like to see. But that’s OK. I understand I’m not going to enjoy everything posted and I’m also not going to agree with everything posted. But I think it’s fair for those same people to then lecture on what isn’t appropriate to post on devRant, and it’s even more silly when their posts are sometimes irrelevant to development and the posts they are complaining about are relevant.
In the end, based on the large majority of feedback we get, we want to make devRant a place where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves and doesn’t have to think about possibly getting ridiculed every time they post and that don’t have people trying to dictate what kind of ideas they are allowed to post. We also realize there’s types of content people don’t enjoy, but telling others not to post it is not the solution. We will soon be launching post type filters that will make filtering rants by post type possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for reading.67
My first post on devRant. Hope you like it (is a true story)
User : Hey, can you help me with this thumbdrive? Cannot open it
Me: Sure, let me see...
At this time I noticed that the drive was leaking something and smells funny also...
Me: Did you dropped it into water or something liquid?
User: Ehmm. Yes! Washed it with bleach!
Me: But why?
User : Oh! because of viruses.8
After a week of failed attempts im about to post my first question on stackoverflow. If i dont return, tell my wife i always hated her.12
Person: "Hey I need help with this thing"
DevRant Response: Helps out, no matter how n00bish it is
Stackoverflow Response: Flood the post with downvotes and complaints until it's deleted
Quora response: *Crickets*
/r/programming Response: Give like 2 responses to the question, both of which aren't helpful.
This is just one of the many reasons I love DevRant, and how I ended up finding it in the first place.9
Not a dev post, just wanted to share :) just for your viewing pleasure - My first pics taken using a low budget camera and ‘scope.11
Context: I work in a cyber security company which develop cyber security solutions.
I started testing the API of the dashboard we have. Within 15 minutes, after poking around with burp suite, found SQL injection in post data that leads to the whole DB dumping in sqlmap.
Told the boss and the API developer. Boss said, "it's ok to have bugs/holes in trial box". But this is on a machine that is gonna be sent to client for trial in a few days. I even compiled a report and how to fix it, which is like 2 lines of "if else" statement by the way. Told the API developer how to fix, he didn't care. 'I work on functionality first'. Doesn't look like he gonna fix.
A damn cyber security company, developing cyber security solution, do the "don't" in web security 101, which is dumping POST data directly into the SQL query, which requires only 5 minutes to fix. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️15
I'll hopefully be releasing the security/privacy blog (going to bundle both into one blog) tonight.
I'm actually nervous about this 😅
(first post will solely be an introduction/hello post)79
GUESS WHO RELEASED FIRST ANDROID APP !!!!! 👯👯👯👯👯👯 https://play.google.com/store/apps/...
Honestly, it's kinda strange that only now I published something, even tho I already work as Android dev 🤔 Any similar experience or is it just me?
It's quite small app, nothing really special, tho REALLY USEFUL!!! (At least for me 😉)
Alright, this is a point where I ask favors:
1. Do those index circles look strange? Should I remove/keep/change them??🤔
2. Since my first year of collage starts on 25th, could someone post lessons that are introduced in collage? (For small feature 😉)
3. If someone actually likes it and wants some feature or translation - PLEASE DO TELL ME!!! I'll implement them as soon as possible (only for my beloved devranters, aka all of them 😘💋♥️)52
I've been wanting a thing where you can upload a file through a post request (api style), get a download link which allows for one download only (after the file gets downloaded it is removed) and be done.
Couldn't find one so quicky, decided to write one myself.
Two hours later I've got a functioning first version, this is the first time ever where I genuinely wrote a system I needed quickly within a few fucking hours and it actually works O_o16
Asked Google Assistant what it knew about me. Didn't expect this answer but surprisingly point on.
All that neural and machine learning is paying off in a seriously creepy way.
BTW new to the community, first post and loving it!9
I'm starting to get the hang of this app.
I'm quite timid, I've only given a few +1s around.
I suppose this is my "Hello, world!" post!11
Wife has literally the best IT job in the city. First wall of miners up and running. From my previous post of the 8 card boxes to this -- stacks of them and more stacks of bitmains. Fuck I wish these were ours. I know one IT honey that's getting chased around the house tonight cause she's sending me pics like this:11
found this gem today.
captcha - Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.
ahh, seems promising!!3
Hi guys. This is my first ever post so just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. It's really nice to be a part of your community and I will look forward to laughing my @ss of at all your posts.
Here is a pic of my coding/ gaming set up for your viewing pleasure.
See you in the comments 😊
That feel when you Google your problem and the first result is your own stack exchange post without any answers 🙄4
Hey, this is my first day and first post on DevRant ! :D
I just wanted to share with you how much i hate the WIX ads on YouTube!
"Hey, want a website? Build it yourself !"
What's wrong with their dumb algorithm at Google? I'm very familiar with web development, just use my cookies and understand that I MAKE MY OWN WEBSITES!13
I played a prank on my coworkers. Covered the bottom sensor of the mouse with part of a post-it note. I went home for the night.
The following morning My boss was the only one in at first and spent an hour unplugging and plugging it back in. He was just about to go out to buy another mouse when someone else came in, immediately looked at the bottom, chuckled to himself and took it off.5
It's my first day on devRant. It's been hilarious so far. Everyone seems really cool and interesting.
I'd post a rant but I'm more tired than annoyed by anything right now.
Cheers from Argentina!9
My First Post
My friend recommended me to try this app, and I was very impressed by the community here. 😀
I love you, devs!!9
For the first time in weeks I have energy enough to work on rewriting the security/privacy blog again! Post sort order will be fixed :)
Font ideas, anyone? And other feature ideas are welcome as well ;)32
Okay so if you click on my profile and scroll down (all the way to the end) my first post on devRant was about me making a website for my best friend and ask her out that way. An update on that... we got married :3
And this was the second post about it https://devrant.com/rants/704942/...7
Android and Full Stack dev here. Also first post.
No boss, i won't call that client to tell him how to configure ssl for his Outlook.11
I am a student who is just starting out in cs and web design. I don't really like web design that much and don't see a future for myself but I run a small website for fun.
Whenever and I mean ｗｈｅｎｅｖｅｒ I show my roommate or friends a side project hosted on the site I get a 8 minute long speech about how an aspect of my design is flawed, how my color scheme is trash, and how I should do X thing instead. Whenever I argue and say that I like my design I'm met with "I'm the end user and the user is always right"12
🇩🇪 (Telemediengesetz): "ADRESSE DER ELEKTRONISCHEN POST!" ("address of electronic postal service")
Yea, I fucking love my first language.19
Dead 💀 developer.
My first interview,
Back then was technical graduated local CompSchool. Call for a job newspaper, by phone ☎️ the Supervisor assign a date for interview.
In the office the developer guy was amaze because he will hire any from CompSchool he also was student and all stuff made was on the premised of he learned and worked on the company.
About half and hour talks, he write my name on a post-it and put on HR desk.
“Come back tomorrow morning .. tell me you got the job !”
Do so, entering the office next day, was a sad people talking.. the Developer is 💀 dead (drugged on a party).
So this guy “my name in the post-it” is our salvation for all the database, passwords, accounting, etc. and spell my name.
What tha... got the job, the money 💴, was 18 years old, with excessive income (dead guy salarie).
Worked 3 1/2 years for the company.
Thank you 💀 for the opportunity.11
Dartlang has now tied with lua for my favorite programming Language.
And the flutter sdk is my favorite tool / library
Good job Google .
Also.. My first app is in the google play store. I will make a post abt it soon.12
Google Duplex: "Hi! Uhm.. I'd like to make a dinner reservation for 3."
Restaurant: "Sure! What time would you like?"
Google Duplex: "It's, uhh.. for tomorrow May the 11th at NULL POINTER EXCEPTION."
Restaurant: "Internal Exception: Invalid parameter not satisfying: time"
Btw, hi devRant, this is my first post!!4
hey everyone, I'm new to Dev rant. not quite sure what to say. so i guess I'll just observe.
So recently I commented on one of the post which lead me to convince my parents to allow me to buy my favourite painting.
So here we go 😊
Finally my first painting.
Canvas printed and framed. Yet to mount it and will post better pictures.25
For the last months I only was a silent reader. As I configured my .zshrc, I thought I could combine my first post with the result of my work. Didn't thought, I could invest that much time in something like this...7
Found this on r/ProgrammerHumor and thought I'd share it on here as my first post. Looking forward to getting to know the community. It's cool to see a community of like-minded people!9
My first post................... from firefox.
Chrome has made me to switch to firefox completely.17
I joined a start up and worked after college hours as an intern over there. I would usually bunk my college and go to my internship. I had limited knowledge at that moment. I worked very hard over there because I wanted (still want) to gain practical knowledge.
Almost a month into it and I had to take a break from it because I had college work. Rejoined the same start up during my vacations. Worked quite a lot and learnt quite some stuff. I continued the internship after my one month vacation for another month once my college started. All this while I was not being paid, not even a little bit of allowance. But that didn't matter because I wanted to learn
Fast forward six months to November 2016. I have been placed in an MNC through my college placements. One day I get a call from this start up owner(we had become good acquaintances by then) if I was willing to work as a paid intern while I was working on the projects that the company landed (so I guess as a free-lancer) and as an unpaid intern while I was working on the company projects. I agreed. Jump to December. I have joined and started working on an Android project of this very big company.
At time point, I should inform you'll that I'm not very good at Android and that the company size is very small. Company owner plus the tech lead in one city (where I'm from) and another two full time employees in another city. Out of which one quit to start his own company apparently. The start up would primarily employ interns and provide exposure to them while getting their work done.
Back to the story. The tech lead vaguely assigns everyone their work. Everyone over here includes new interns and previous interns like me who will get paid some amount. 3-4 days into the project, the tech lead quits. The tech lead and the company owner call three of us and says that one of you will have to be a project manager for this project. And then both of them and 2 of my colleagues look at me. And I don't know what to say. I hesitate initially because it's too much responsibility but agree to it finally.
The next day I come to office and read about the project thoroughly and catch up with my colleagues about the progress. The entire day I'm panicking about what I'm going to do. In the evening, my boss tells me that we have to go for a meeting with the client for whom we are doing this project. At this moment, the shit out of me has been scared. Mostly because I don't know what the fuck am I going to do over there apart from being stupid and asking dumb questions. So we reach the client's office and wait for him. The entire time I'm thinking to myself that I'm going to drown this company by opening my mouth. Surprisingly, all the questions that I asked seemed legitimate and I asked a lot of questions. And so I didn't drown the company after all...phew!
It's been more than a week. And holy fuck! What a pain it is to manage people. Half of my time is spent on updating excel sheet about their progress, where are they stuck and what is needed. And the other half about thinking what the fuck am I doing or how am I gonna do it.
So to sum up, intern-turned-freelancer-turned-project manager who has no idea what the fuck is going on. Seems pretty crazy, don't you think.7
Created my first stack overflow post for an issue I'm having. Now I wait to be told my question is stupid.12
WordPress related, get ready for some disgust.
So today early in the morning my boss forwarded me an email from a client, it was about a bug, and asked me if I can have a look at it and fix it.
"Yaay, WordPress!" I thought and opened the page containing the mentioned bug. She wrote that in the italian version of the page, users can select dates in the calendar, which should be disabled, like in the german version.
So yeah, I opened the code. Everything in the function looked perfect. Really. And the Data was also correctly set in the backend of WP.
The function was only 3 lines of code:
- Get the german post ID of the current post (german or italian) by its ID (using a Polylang function)
- Get an Advanced Custom Fields field by name and from a post with the ID from before
- json_encode its content and echo it to a JS var for initialization and later use in some AngularJS.
No fucking missing semicolon, it was fucking perfect like a sunset with your soulmate.
So I tried to find the bug with my personal way of debugging:
When a creek suddenly is full of water mixed with shit, walk upstream through the turds until you reach clear water. This is where the bug is.
=> So I first looked at the HTML source: Turds.
=> Then the ACF field content: Still turds.
=> Then the ID of the german post: Shit stain and turds (var_dump: null)
=> Please god at least $post->ID? Nope, fart smell and turds.
=> Nothing more to check: Clear fucking water and the flowery smell of 99 devVirgins
So it replaced $post->IT with get_the_ID() and it worked like a charm.
Afterwards I feel stupid, but $post->IT worked all the times before...
FUCK YOU WORDPRESS YOU UGLY PIECE OF HUMAN-CENTIPEDE-PROCESSED-DOGFART.
Thanks for your patience.
Only one beer was sucked dry during the writing of this fucking rant.2
Colleague asked me to join devRant and I was like that is it something related to development.
But when he said NO its nice and sharing about your seniors and managers. I was like that oh I need to write so much then......
Coming with expereince in first startup as employee.
If I am responding to a rant or a comment. I would like to be able see the rant or the comment. When writing comments I have found myself paddling between the post and my soon-to-be comment because I forgot what I was responding to in the first place.
Look at the attached image. There's a lot of wasted space that could be useful for this. I think this would be a huge QoL improvement. What do you think?11
Basically finished the notification filter script* already, but there's still some small bugs I want to get to first, so in the meanwhile I created a "subscribe" button script**, that simply posts a pin emoji and "Subscribing to the comments".
On desktop I usually used to post a dot to subscribe to rant comments, but with the new people wave, that was often misunderstood (you emoji users won the evolution of comment subscribing, RIP dot) I'm sure some other people that use the webapp more often, will find it useful too.
* notification filter: https://devrant.com/rants/1424435/...
** subscribe button: https://github.com/7twin/...19
TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER RANT FIRST!
SYNTAX THEME SELECTION
In this rant you can set your theme for the syntax highlighter!
Just ++ the comment with your preferred theme.
The bot checks for the "<user> ++'d your comment!" notification and stores your selection!
(When you ++ multiple themes, your theme will be the one you ++'d the last)
Then, next time you request a syntax highlighting (see other rant on how to do that), that theme will be used!
Please don't post any comments here if possible!!!
(You can post comments and ask questions in the other rant)
Feel free to ++ this rant tho ;D
Have fun and thank you for using this bot!28
This site came up when I ragingly typed "HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO CREATE A FUCKING APPIMAGE AND WHY IS THERE NOTHING ON STACKOVERFLOW ON IT" into Google because the devs of AppImage just put "Look how these people did it" in their documentation instead of a helpful walk-through on what everything does and it was 2AM and I already spent several hours trying to find anything about the creation of AppImages.
I like the rants here, so hello everyone!15
StackOverflow knows everything!
One night I asked question on SO first time. So next morning, really excited man, want to see my scores. But result was -3 rating! "F**k!" And urgently deleted my question. But SO gave me `Peer pressure` badge, badge for `Delete own post with score of -3 or lower.`... OMG!3
*spends a long time crafting a huge eBay post (we're moving)
* tries to drag and drop first picture
* page navigates to the picture without warning
* loses everything
WHEN DRAGGING A PICTURE INTO A WEB PAGE I NEVER WANT TO NAVIGATE TO A PAGE WITH JUST THAT IMAGE. WHY NO WARNING BEFORE LEAVING THE PAGE. WHY DON'T YOU SAVE TEXT LOCALLY. WHY DOES THE WEB SUCK SO HARD. AAAGGGHHHH.
* feels better
* starts over8
Went for an interview today. Guy asked me to write chess and gave me a pen and a single blank page. Wondering what does he mean by that, he said start and we will see. Still confused what i am suppose to write, told him it will require way more than one paper to write chess. His response you are not interested in coding. I was like what the hell is going on. After 5 minutes, HR came and told me I can leave for the day.10
Hello everyone, it's my first post here, I needed to feel welcomed :D, any devs from France here? I will be happy to make some dev friends, actually I know none except of my colleagues..:s50
Finally (sort of )completed my website for the first time ever.
Sorry for the useless post, but some of you should be able to relate.20
First post always feels like the first lines of code or first commit ever ! It's exciting yeah ?
Like Hello World app
Wish me luck6
Decided to upgrade my hardware a day after wk119 ends. Oof. I'll post an update once the first part (monitors) arrives, but here's a before pic in the meantime.
Monitors: 3 different brands at 3 different sizes/resolutions. Left to right: 1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1440x900.
Mic: Neewer NW-800 with a U-PHORIA UMC22 interface.
Keyboard: A DIY Nyquist kit from keeb.io with Canvas XDA keycaps.
Rubber duck: I prefer a fuzzy kitten.3
Hello everyone! First rant, didn't know what to post about for the longest time, but have this thing. We were allowed to take some notes into our programming exam. This happened somehow. If you start writing really fucking tiny, then notice there's a bunch of free space left, then in the actual exam end up using it once or twice max. Anyway, hi!11
Erm..... Here goes nothing.
Hello everyone, I'm [REDACTED] from [REDACTED] in the SEA region. I'm a highschool student, 17, with a hobby of programming in Python 3 as a self-taught trial-and-error script kiddy, mostly small scripts from random "Yea I should do that, how long will it take?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"-moments. I found DevRant while talking with people in a few programming Discord servers. Hope this is enough for a "Hello World!" post....and yea, welcome me to DevRant *pop confetti and hope not forced to clean up later*18

Week 37 is officially the best week ever ! Haven't seen more fun posts and ideas to play around people !
When someone says their code won't work, even when they tried adding the first post from a StackOverflow page.
Man, where have I been all these days. devRant feels like some place I belong to. awesome community! loving it!!4
Today I discovered what slowed my productivity the most: variable naming.
In a project I was naming many variables 'dirname' in different parts of the my code, but it represented 3 things: only the name of the directory, relative path + directory, and absolute path + directory.
I wasted to much time just figuring out which was which everytime until I finally decided to organize variables names better and see the wonders of the world. Result:
- dirname: only the name
- reldirname: relative path + dir
- absdirname: absolute path + dir
Such simple solution, yet took me years to actually see the benefits, my god
(First devRant post btw :3)7
Hello World! First post here. I'm literally done with frontend stuff. I want to design code, not to code design. Unless it's Processing. I find it cute. So.. I have a somewhat handy grasp on C++ because of a class in electronics course, Python seems quite easy to catch. I'm totally new to programming. I'd like to get into software, game development and android development (but I would like to do things cross-platform).
Which paths, resources, languages, useful books, videos, or just anything would you recommend?
To be fair, I have no coding friends so mentorship or simply finding code buddies would be great. 💜9
Wrote a long post on Android.
Wanted to reformat.
Wanted to make sure I won't screw up so I'll copy all text first.
Selected huge part of the text.
Mistakenly tapped on "paste" instead of "select all"
99% of my post is replaced with some unintelligible shit from before.
Where the fuck is CTRL+Z?!?!
This may or may not be an old meme but this is the first time i ever saw it and all i can say is
THANK YOU to the original creator, whoever he or she might be!
I had this insecurity for a long time as i always portrayed myself as more of a thinker than coder. I have to go over everythibg before i got to write even one single line of code, and for this reason i tought i might not be made out to be a programmer after all :s
It's truly reassuring to hear that your short comings are actually quite normal 😥
Sorry for the long post on a joke tagged post 😁4
Our post offices now test E-Voting and give 50'000CHF to the first one who manipulates the Voting system, on Gitlab, A guy named "FuckThePost" made the Source Code public.
Love that guy...12
About to post my first question on SO.
Wish me luck.
How should I word a question without getting downvoted into Oblivion.
Java dev here. I rewrote an app and replaced a system call to ssh with a modern jaxrs post for uploading a file and (new) some additional data.
I even used a stream.
1 hour in production, first client doesn't get his file. Log says OutOfMemoryError: heap.
Me: wtf? I already use streams.
Looking at the Jersey library. Docs say nothing. An issue from 2013 says: oh if you silly don't use the Apache httpclient addon, we disable chunking and buffer the whole body, because our tests fail with the jdk included http client otherwise.
No warning in the logs. Thank you soooooo much! Who could have known?4
Tfw when you try to make your first rant and you have no idea what to talk about because there are hundreds of things that you can rant about and so you end up making a generic "I'm new here, please help me!" post.
I love computers :)7
First things first:
HI devRant. This is my first post, I've been a observer for the most by now but I'm so glad I found this network (by searching for other people who hate ionic, angular, react)
What is it about Linux, that any developer seems to love?
I'm a IT student in Germany and I grew up with windows. I know what it's doing, I'm working quite fast on it and it just runs well.
But inehrn I look around at the university the guys who really know what they're doing with their code are using Linux only. There's not even one of them who would consider windows.
I couldn't really find a satisfying answer for that.23
[Disclaimer: This doesn't have too much to do on programming or dev stuff]
Earlier today I went to the library (the physical place) and just decided to sit down with some books on computer stuff, at some point I went into the "Education" section to see if they had like how to stuff on programming or whatever, and I found a palm sized rock that was painted white on one side with a dragon hidden behind a book. It said on the back "Post on FB. Keep or rehide"...
So I got my phone out and opened FaceBook, and the first post that showed said "I just hid a bunch of rocks at the Library and [The name of a park nearby]".
I posted some pictures of the rock and mentioned the friend on mine that hid it, and went to another section to hide it again.
I found a second one that said "Be yourself" and the same "Post on FB, keep or rehide" message, one with a Monster on it and at the park there was a mouse eating a piece of cheese.
The mouse one I kept for myself. :D1
WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU SO FUCKING SURPRISED SHIT HITS THE FAN EVERY GOD DAMN TIME A CHANGE IS MADE IN YOUR LIMPING SYSTEM?
YOU GAVE NO FUCKING SPECIFICATIONS NOR ANY CARE TO DECIDE ABOUT WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT IN IT.
EVERY TIME I SEE THE CODE I GET EYE CANCER, DEBUGGING THIS SHIT IS AS HARD AS FINDING THE FATHER IN A HOBO STREET ORGY
AND YOU FUCKING THINK ADDING FEATURES INTO THE SYSTEM UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES IS SO GOD DAMN EASY.
I hope life's god damn dandy for you, get fucked with a pipe bomb.
Oh, hello DevRant, sorry for sitting on the fence for the past months.4
I'm learning web development, and this is another small project that I made - a basic code player.
Used jQuery for the first time and realized how easy it makes things.
PS - I know it is pretty insignificant given that people here create much bigger things, but I'm proud of it!
PPS - Will post the previous small project I'd done. It was a browser based basic game.17
Here's two tips for doing better posts that a lot of people seem to need:
1) Use smaller paragraphs instead of a giant one.
Be nice to readers and avoid posting single giant walls of text.
2) If you post something short and the first comment is "why?", then you're just annoying readers. Whenever you do a statement like "I'm having a shitty day" or "X technology is garbage" please include enough explanation or context that motivated the post, don't make users chase you for explanations.16
Hitting the deadline rush with my university projects now, it's putting me all over the place jumping between C++ & OpenGL, C# in Unity and Java/XML for Android development, one thing at a time would be nice! Also first post, hello community :)4
To those that put the wrong answer first in their post, I know already where you live, open the door and wait to save us both time and hassle, I'll fucking pulverize you across the fucking wall.
Hi, this is my first post here.
I am a poet, musician & software developer, who is entirely in love with art. This a just a place to rant right? I'll do just that!
I code for fun, write poetry to keep my sanity, and I make music, well ... for fun.16
Silly and stupid me.
Check phone. Check devRant.
Saw Trogus's filter update post.
Happy and left a comment.
Went to playstore and update.
Open devRant and use the feature.
Tried to filter only Rants and Questions type.
Happy and went back to sleep again bcz Saturday.
Continue the rest of day with other stuffs.
Use devRant again.
"Huh why the heck is the first post about some random quote?"
"Why the hell is second post meme"
Check filter feature again.
Silly me and stupid my eyes and useless my brain is not worthy for good and clean UIUX.4
So this is less of a rant and more of a "I'm very excited" post
For the past 8 months I have been working on a redesign of a magazines Wordpress website. I could've completed this site but I wanted every detail to be perfect. I was the only developer / designer working on this project
Now after 8 months, WE WILL BE LAUNCHING THE REDESIGN FOR THE FIRST TIME NEXT WEEK!!!!!!! EVERYONE LOVES THE REDESIGN AND THIS IS THE FIRST MAJOR REDESIGN FOR THIS COMPANY EVER SINCE THEY LAUNCHED A WEBSITE 8 YEARS AGO!1
Working with client at different timezone (+3 hours difference). Client time: 5 P.M.

Please get this fixed today.

Okay then, time to post my first rant. And get depressed until cob. 😔2
Not just Stack Overflow, but all help forums:
If someone asks a question, and you think you might know the answer based on its subject or context, please spare a thought for others and instead of dragging the post on for pages and pages without an answer in order to show the poster up for being inadequately articulate, please make the first post a link to at least seemingly relevant reference material.
Nothing more frustrating looking for some undocumented api syntax, finding a similar question that you might be able to gleam from, and then only seeing pages of "aaah, but what OS are you on? What colour is your desktop? What is the average velocity of a..."
You can see they are struggling with an api, and you clearly know where to find the answer, so just quit the cocksure jostling of pretending you're any good at support and just be useful. The poster may be a tool, but the thousands of hits from Google will just think you're a twat.8
Hey, first post!
Just wanted to say hi to everyone, been reading through Devrant past couple of hours and found it both insightful and hilarious.
It'll be nice to finally have a place to rant about shit my friends would normally not have a clue about.
I'd put a lengthy intro about myself here however I'm not really about that.
Anyway, Hope to rant soon!4
First ever devRant Swag Store order and my stress ball from 150++ on a post! I can't wait to wear the shirt to work tomorrow!4
This is my first startup. Well, kinda.
This tool suggests you when it’s better to post on Instagram and it also allows you to pick some hashtags. You can copy them just one tap away!
It doesn’t store your data. It has no backend, so your privacy is cared about :D
It’s better when installed as PWA!
Built in just one day. Producthunt and all the other good stuff is upcoming.
When im programming everything is OK. Maybe im distracted but i can fight that.
But when it comes to Android ROMs and releasing then i hate people that send you PM about the ROM and the answer is literally in the first post.
Why I sometimes hate linux:
Found old computer with freya os.. I usually work on Windows, so I thought lets try to work on linux for a change..
First things first: sudo apt-get update / upgrade and while it is doing all the updates lets get something to drink..
Came back, logged inn and mouse is gone.. after some googling and searching on my mobile i found out that alt+ctrl+f1 and then alt+ctrl+f7 fixes problem..
Mouse now is back but upgrade failed half way though because no network.. wifi stopped working.. something wrong with drivers.. so to continue upgrade of OS i need a cable now.. (restart didn't work)
Two hours later I managed to update everything, wifi drivers are working and I managed to post this.. But it's too late to do anything, so I will probably put this away again for couple months and will go through same shit next time I open it.5
For those of you desiring to post non-rants, I wrote a handy utility function for you:
* Toggles whether this post is
* a rant or not.
// Check if toggling is safe
for(var i = 0; i < 999999999; i ++)
for(var t = 0; t < 999999999; t ++);
console.log("Crazy security checks came through.")
// Toggle ('isRant' is true by default)
isRant = !isRant
From now on, you can easily put 'toggleRant()' on the first line of any rant. As we all know, the 'isRant' on devRant is true by default.
Feel free to play around with it:
This would also indicate that your "rant" is not a rant.
I've also wrapped the 'toggleRant' into another function with a shorter name for you lazy people (which most programmers are):
* Wrapper for 'toggleRant'.
trogus() // Just in case
Or if you type one additional letter, you also make sure that it's extra safe to call the function:
* Extra safe version of 'tr'.
for(var i = 0; i < 746985768; i ++);
console.log ("Extra safe")
I'm an angular 1 dev...so already you can tell, im a rare bean...i didn't go to university and i left 6th form (college)after 3 months....have a job due to experiences coding. as it was my passion since i was about 12. so all i can say is FUCK U DEGREES,I DON'T NEED YOUR EXPENSIVE ASS,
also this is my first post :)9
Hey! First post on rant by saying merry Xmass!
For those like me who live in a country where you only have the cold but not the snow 😅❄️11
Hello all! First post here. I've been a lurker for a long time and have enjoyed all the content.
I start a new gig working remote on Monday (second remote gig) I'm hoping it's better than the last one. How is everyone?8
I have come across the most frustrating error i have ever dealt with.
Im trying to parse an XML doc and I keep getting UnauthorizedAccessException when trying to load the doc. I have full permissions to the directory and file, its not read only, i cant see anything immediately wrong as to why i wouldnt be able to access the file.
I searched around for hours yesterday trying a bunch of different solutions that helped other people, none of them working for me.
I post my issue on StackOverflow yesterday with some details, hoping for some help or a "youre an idiot, Its because of this" type of comment but NO.
This is the first time Ive really needed help with something, and the first time i havent gotten any response to a post.
Do i keep trying to fix this before the deadline on Sunday? Do i say fuck it and rewrite the xml in C# to meet my needs? Is there another option that i dont even know about yet?
I need a dev duck of some sort :/42
Good day/night to all.
This is my first post and I don't really know what to say so I'll keep it short...
I've been reading rants for a while now, really like the community and want to say thanks to @trogus and @dfox for creating this. :-)13
I haven't opened my laptop all day for the first time in 2.5 months. Feels damn good. Got some good laughs today out of devrant; thanks everyone.
So i guess everybody knows what PCB is in here.
But i guess not everybody made their own.
So the process is quiet simple but i will say it even more simple.
Basically get a special mask. Shine UV light on it. Soda for washer machine.
And ferus chloride
But the time you shine the UV and the distance matters a hell fucking lot.
I got the perfect shining on it the first time in like 4 years. Didnt do it in 4 years and now did it perfect on first try.
Would post photo but camera in my latest build is broken for some reason. IDK if i will actually sleep today when i want to fix the damn camera.8
First post, woo!
I didn't get it at first but now I understand why to hate meme postings and repostings. It's nice until you notice the reposts of a picture all show up at the same time, which means they all are getting it from the same source. Guys, I could write a program to post memes from one social media to another. Don't waste your time doing something a program can do.4
Receive several documents of blog posts from a client, each one titled "Blog $n - $category - $title." Cool, the client gave them to me in order and I just have to plug them in.
Enter blogs on site starting with Blog 1.
Client sees the blogs on the site and loses their shit. "I specifically numbered the blogs so you knew what order to put them in! How hard is it to put them in numerical order? Blog 1 is the newest blog and should be first on the page."
The site displays the newest post first, but because any normal person would have named the oldest blog "blog 1" and counted up from there the blogs are in the reverse order the client expected.
What the hell kind of dense motherfucker numbers their blog files in a manner which requires them to rename every file each time they write a new blog post?
First Post since... Long I guess?
I got a new project!! I am currently creating a Webserver Framework in Java. I can create fully functional websites with a few lines of JSON.
I am so hyped because it does work <3
(Pictures of development might follow)
(Can I even call it framework? Hm dunno.. )17
First actual post, despite having an account for over a month!
Wondering what phones people are using? I myself use the galaxy s7 edge, switched to android from iPhone to try and make apps and Android was easier than trying to make them on iPhone.23
Posted a question on Stack Overflow today for the first time in as long time... Have lost faith, what shit some suggestions people have.
- Clear the cache, check again...🤨
- Your code is wrong, I tested it my way, you need to change.😒
Read the fucking post properly and gauge some level of expertise... I clearly wrote that it WAS working, the bull shit your detailing is completely irrelevant.
I am currently doing my first ever internship. It is a medium-ish sized IT company and I basically do stuff in networking and software development. I sit on my chair, wheel it back and forth the small space behind my desk for like and hour. Then I go to the cafeteria, eat whatever is there (it’s absolutely free? Hopefully). There is a pool table which is always occupied. Then I sit in the lab and configure routers till 8 in the night. Boring.
I am developing a management system side by side so I break my head over server side routes (seriously, they are confusing) over the night.
So coffee is my mantra and boring is my life.2
I am currently a high school student. I am currently working in an internship for a local company. Super nice mentors and owner.
Anyhow, I was working on turning sensors data into JSON files which would be later sent to a server through HTML GET requests. I struggled with this for several days. The server received the data but displayed them as 'null'. Mentor came in to help. He changed 'println' to 'print' in the code where the JSON data are compiled. Then the thing works.
Witchcraft, I tell thee.
PS. First post2
My first post of 2019.
One month to Valentine's Day, Last year's was spent with beer, the pervious with her. This year I want to spend with her and beer.
I somehow feel I will get neither.4
Post mental break down, this is my first day back at uni... And I'm anxious to death. 😶
Maybe I should go back home and not leave for this week either.14
I've just discovered that there is 'undelete' option on SO.
I laughed at first and then I realized that my problem was unsolved!
undeleted my post!
Thanks SO! 😆1
Just saw someone's first post and they said they have been a reader on here for a while and I was wondering how many users there are that have not posted anything7
Best way to avoid procrastination : We tend to avoid commitments or to do large tasks as even visualizing them seems tiring and the longer it takes, the vulnerable we are to distractions
So I use this simple trick
I break my task into numerous sub tasks. For example if I need to finish a feature before day end, I would first list down all the cases I can think of in order and write them down using actual pen and paper.
I then start implementing them step by step.
I mark them checked once done.
It gives me a sense of achievement as I see those checks besides the sub tasks and I can also take breaks between steps.
So all it takes is just first five minutes of planning.
I had to do the above procedure, for this post as well.
Hope it helps fellow developers
Me : *testing json output on pc by sending items with GET*
App : *app crashing with only recyclerview error*
Me : *debugging the app for 2 hours and testing ways to do another adaptor *
Me : fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu... I used POST to get the data on app and forgot to change $_GET $_POST
Lesson learned. Always check the input first
Im ashame of my self #crysinthecorner2
when you post your first rant ever and it gets upvoted by dfox :D

seems like a really nice community here, glad to have found the app3
I've been reading devRant at work for the past 6 months and it kept me sane through a few moments. Thanks. :)
And now I finally started to feel that maybe even I could have some horror stories to share. (I've been in the company for more than 4 years)
(Sorry for long post.
TL;DR: break time laws suck in my country.)
One example would probably be how our company decided to cut 5 minutes from our lunch time (down to 25 minutes) and add 3 minutes to our 5 minute coffee break(*"gifted" by our CEO) in the afternoon.
You're probably asking yourself, "What happened to the remaining 2 minutes?".
*Well, it's simple. In my country it's somehow still legal to have only 30 minutes of break time for the whole day if working hours don't exceed 10 hours. It's actually written in the law that you CAN divide that lunch break time to be placed at different times. To me that sound like fucking nuts...
Thankfully nobody's taking that time change quite literally and most people still use the full 30 minutes. But some people here have been fired for much less, so I don't play around. I just pretend to work while reading devRant. 😎5
In interview: “I have first-hand experience in that”.
In reality: “I read it about it in a blog post once”
First Post must be seems to be awkward at this place but it is my first post.
"Sometimes inner me says all this coding related stuff might be getting old day by day
//Generally after watching a sci fi hit:/ :) "11
Not sure if this counts, but a few years ago I had decided to start a tech blog and I was so excited about it at first. I was like, "I'm gonna make a post EVERY single day!". And well.. for awhile I did and then I was feeling pressured to keep doing it and started to feel overwhelmed. Then about 2-3 months later, I got burnt out, hit a low point and unfortunately, deleted my entire blog xD I later learned to pace myself when it comes to things like that.3
First of all sorry for the bad picture. Let's move on...
Deleting this method like:
Who the hell did this nonsense?
I just took a picture of it so I could post it here and rant about it.
Sure felt stupid after deleting it for not thinking about a protected method in the parent class that is part of an API.
I was feeling too confident in my skills lately anyway9
I want to dedicate my first post to all the people who build this great community.
And I hope start commenting more.3
We have the funniest and weirdest conversations during lunch, most of them not dev related. Have been thinking about ranting them for a while now because they are just good fun.
The following one brought a bit of a discussion so It convinced me to post it because i would like to hear all of your opinions about this one:
Imagine that one day you come home and there is a (deep) clone of yourself having sex with your wife, what would you do?
We got divided into 3 groups mostly.
Group one would send him away and let him life his own life.
Group two would make use of the fact that there are 2 of them.
Group three would murder him, the explanation Why Was quite interesting, because it was the first instinct of them, it would also have been from the clone, that's why that had to.
Again I would like to hear what you all would do :)
Maybe if this one does okay I will post more stories11
Contributing to Servo, Mozilla's prototype web browser. It took me three full months of receiving help from the Mozilla research team to merge my first semi-complex PR.
I even wrote a huge blog post about it: http://brainlessdeveloper.com/2017/...5
For starters this is my first post, found devrant the other day you're all hilarious.
I hate math, I hate proofs. I'm in a class "Analysis of Algorithms" and I have understood and do understand the importance of optimizing algorithms and data structures and I understand the algorithms and data structures themselves. That being said, I'm fucking sick of math and proofs and all this bullshit that is probably pretty important but ugggghh, I guess I just have to push through, but writing this out helped.18
After a good response on my first blog (http:///www.prismo.net/blogs/...), I am planning to write and publish a second blog.
So is anybody interested?
The topic is RSS. I picked up this topic because many keep asking me how do I keep myself updated on various things happening around even when I no longer consume social media like Facebook or Twitter.
I realised many are not aware about this awesome technology and using this will save a lot of time for people.
Post your thoughts in comments below :)8
Why is there no tool autoinstalling missing programs using your favourite pac(kage)man(ager)?
>> couldn't find “program”. Should I install it? (Y/n)
If there is one... Shame on me *rings bell*
Also, yay! First Post!14
I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.
Chalo(is about the same as saying,"I'm out"), Good Night peeps 😴.I'm high on sleep.
P.S. didn't proof read the above because high on sleep2
Yesterday I deployed a change to production. One of the impacts was that the first service I created for my current company now receives 99.9% less calls and will make it deprecated during the next 2-3 months.
Was a strange feeling to watch the avg number of calls post-deployment. Somehow I even feel bad for the service now sitting there as shadow of its former self. Is that normal 😐?
I've worked for 2 firms with billion dollar revenue on contract basis in last years, but I'm still a year away from graduating.
It feels suffocating when after a great night of work I have to go to class among people who don't care about programming at all
I just want to graduate and leave this place...
Ps. Attendance is compulsory in my college and I take computer science classes
Pss. I already make thrice of the highest package in offered in my college for last three years!5
Today I created my first shell script for automation.
I have a git repository I use for backing up documents at the training centre I'm at for work. Not a specific project, just all of the documents and miscellaneous stuff. The need for this came about because they re-image the computers every month with a new version of windows (Because they're too cheap to register windows). And I can't risk forgetting to copy all the files onto my USB drive the day before they re-image.
So at the end of each day I open a git bash and type:
git add .
git commit -m "Backup - dd/mm/yy"
Not a particularly laborious task but repetitive and time consuming.
So I decided to create a .sh script to automate the process
(The idea originally occurred because of this post: https://devrant.com/rants/329221/...)
So after about half an hour fiddling about with dates and $ signs, I came up with GitBackup.sh:
git add .
commitMsg="Backup - "$today
git commit -m "$commitMsg"
git push origin master
Not much but proud to call it my first automation script.2
You know when people here complain about idiots in stackoverflow downvoting without providing explanation?
Yet the same is being done here.
I made a post here about a recent porn game, and such game is relevant because it's top 3 in earnings in patreon.
if you don't think top 3 patreon making 50k a month is interesting for a post, then you're a prejudiced moron.
What rule am I breaking? I didn't post any pornographic image. I didn't even share a link to the game.
Do people here have a fucking problem with sex?
Is sex, the very cause of our existenxe in first place, so problematic that we need to downvote it?5
I found this question on EmguCV's forum that matches my exact issue.
First answer: Never mind - all. I answered it myself.
Welp. Thanks for nothing. How fucking difficult can it be to post your solution to the issue?
This is my first post. I just want to say that you guys are awesome!!! I love all the rants that I understand. I can relate to that even though I just started my career as a software engineer few months ago.
Keep posting awesome rants!
Love you all !! 😊7
Made my first contribution to the Python package index. Contributing to open source has always been fun. DevRants, please check my module that I have contributed. Here is the link to PyPi - https://pypi.org/project/... and GitHub - https://github.com/browserium/...
Please post your feedback and comments so that I can improve my module and have a workaround across all the issues.1
I'm writing a special (fictional) story and I'll post it next as soon as it's done (in an hour or so). I've written articles before, but this will be my first ever try at a (very short) fictional story 😅
Any feedback is welcome.
Have you ever written fiction?15
That very "awesomeee" moment when you have to create a website to a new startup which are using all the right buzzwords such as blockchain, AI and machine learning... (wuhuuu)
Btw. will you help a fellow dude by answering my survey for my final paper?
- and it took a whole year for me (and some desperation for help) to write my first ever post on here :p4
Coming from a parallel devRant universe(where %jAsE% is dead and the meme continues to live), here to share only my rare blogposts, starting with:
Also put down 🔫 my misery and let me have an avatar u_u14
This is my first post from the web version of devRant. Never seen it before on a PC.
This is so weird O_O3
Nothing is more satisfying and unsatisfying at the same time than completing a personal project that has been giving you something to do for several months.
First time poster, long time lurker here.1
Hi! This is my first post, I've been programming for about 5 years now and know multiple languages. I intend to do a degree in Computer Science soon but I wondered if anyone had any advice about breaking into the industry, specifically video game development.
I'm not sure if this is really where I'm supposed to post this but I've seen others posting similar things so I figured I'd try it.
Thanks in advance!!14
Upgrading my parents' Windows7 laptops to Windows10.
I'll get to the first post by the time 86% turns to 87%.

Recent discussion with ele gave me an idea to post this question here.
Which type of company should a fresh CS graduate work for? A corporate or a startup or a SME.
My advice for newbies is on SME for first few years. Then decide on your own based on your personality and career goals for future years.26
Ok so I'm taking a developer survey, and since this is the best community of devs I know I'm taking it here first. This is for research purposes attempting to draw parallels between thing such as favorite language and favorite editor, tabs vs spaces and years of development experience, etc.
If you would be so kind as to help me out I will post my findings here once I've collected enough data. Anyone that inputs a valid email address will also be kept in the loop.
Thanks! Here's the link!
TL;DR : vim or IDE ? What's best in your opinion ?
I've always been curious about vim but haven't find enough motivation to learn it. I don't know why but today I felt double plus curious, but having learn to code on IDEs (except for C, because I find CodeBlocks quite wacky) from the start, I'm not sure I could let go features like autocompletion, refactor and code analysis.
If you use vim, do you use it for all your coding or do you just use it in some case ?
If you use it for all your coding, how do you make for the absent features ? Is the use of plugins enough or do you just pass on them ?
Also, first post on devRant !15
I guess I'll post my first rant, rant.
(Aka rant that wasn't a pun)
The Ipads our school use all have the same code, 0000. Even though about all the features are blocked... They never blocked the ability to change the pass code. No one would know who did it, and there would be 9999 possible choices for the new IPad. Who ever though it was a good idea to let highschoolers (12-18 year old) find this out.2

So my friend texts me with the message, you're smart can you figure it out?
What he sent me was a picture of a post, probably from Facebook which said "skynet is working on making you the next Terminator" with a bunch of bytes following it.
So I decode the first letter using an ascII table and sent it to him, and I get the response WOAH Really!!!
Lol even though it's super simple, it make see feel like 😎.6
So I just finished writing my first Code Style/Standards documentation. I guess for now it's more just for me to figure out what annoying things I want changed but wanted to get everyone's opinion and thoughts.
I think this is safe to post as nothing company specific.
When you new to devrant (and your autocorrect keeps changing it to servant) and you don't know how to edit your first post (add more tags)4
I've just started my new career with a job in IT operations and I love it. After my electrical engineering degree I fell into a job as a website manager for a small company, I self taught html and css and I knew from then that I had found a job that didn't feel like a job. I'm excited to learn everything I need to know to progress as far as I can go in this industry. In my first few weeks at this new job (where i have my own office!) I've self taught python to create automation scripts for live projects, currently up to my eyeballs trying to figure out how to change the VB code for an excel module.....Then there have been so many other projects and bugs and I love it! Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated!2
Not an angry rant, and not strictly related to code, but I think it's important, nonetheless.
If you've ever considered or been approached by Amazon, please read this short real-life story first and judge for yourself: https://dev.to/voodooattack/...
P.S: I didn't post this here because I needed markdown for formatting. Sorry. :(8
I it seems that a new ranter has appeared.. (me)
I don't have anything clever to say as a first post... Sorry4
Problably Reposting (like 10M times)
Uploading my first app
took me almost a hour to make the App
Its taking FOREVER to create everything required to post an App
I wrote my first blog post. Finally did something I was procrastinating for over a month.
I just realized I didn't make my first post a hello world post and I just threw away a bunch of potential upvotes. Hopefully it's not too late. Hello world!1
What is with the current trend of hiding the content of the webpage that you have gone to visit under a 'continue reading' button on mobile?
For example, Huffington post article. Content all loads, then dissapears behind 'continue reading' button, showing only the first sentence.
I came here to read the article. I'm sure I want to continue reading..
Who the hell thought this was good design???
Hello everyone!! This is my first rant so I'm not sure what the protocol is.
I just wrote my first ever Medium Post on Dynamic Theming in Android.
Just wanted to share it with you all.
Any constructive criticism is welcome.
I got a call from a recruiter and told him I wasn't looking for a job. He told me he was ringing for clients who were looking for people who we well looked after in their jobs and not looking for work!
I was going to post a rant about something, but was in the middle of something so thought I'll post it later.
Now I can't remember what it was.
Also, this is not the first time this has happened :/2
!rant (first post!)
Feature request: an option to subscribe to the comments of a rant without leaving a comment yourself. What happens now is that some rants get spammed with "following" comments by people who are waiting for an update from the OP. This causes the thead to be spammed.
My idea is to put a button in the options menu to receive notifications for that rant.7
Quick background:I'm am a student at a university in Alabama. I am also working full time and have a family.
My beginning C++ class was online and the teacher was...unique to say politely.
She would post lectures while she did some of the programming examples. That wasn't so bad, except she would cough frequently in the lecture(which wearing headphones would make me jump), and the tempo of her lecture would lull me to sleep after a hard day at work.
What was worse, she would post "projects" for us to do and tell us she would give a guideline in the code.
Well most times what was asked for in the project was topics we hadn't covered fully or she never explained well. Her "guide" was randomly saying a loop should be here and an if and an else should go here, but nothing else would be referenced.
Dropped her the first time, got a Day the second because I just could not follow her lecturing. I later took the class physically and with a different instructor and had the highest grade in the class.
I later had her for web development course and she wasn't as bad on assignments, but damn her coughing still hurt.2
When I created stubmatic (a http mock application), we were using it in our internal project. First time when some other project expressed their interest, I was happy and eager to help.
So the person they sent for the training asked me his first question: "I followed all the steps, but It is not working"
I quickly checked his code and replied "you're using GET instead of POST method"
Then his second and last question about stubmatic was "why don't your code understand which method has to be used? Why should a client need to tell every time?"
Questions/best practises for git?
- use present tense in commit messages. (why though?)
A friend of mine also starts his commit messages with either [Task] or [Cleanup]. Useful for finding Commits in Gitlab etc, because only the first line is shown from the message.
Also, one teacher recommended the usage of branches and the other didn't because of alot of potential merge conflicts when working in a Team or a larger Collaboration. What are your thoughts?
Sorry for the messy post, have a hangover5
Reading a post on Quora lead me here. At first, I didn't like the look and feel so I hit f12 to see if I code see the source code. One would think that after x hours spent coding at my work desk, I would just want to sit at home and watch tv or play games. However, there is something fulfilling about seeing a coded product and taking a quick glance at some source code.4
I feel like internet is becoming shit. At first if we googled about something, we can have proper knowledge about it. But now because some bloggers need web traffic, they post even false information about something. Second, If we want to learn something we have to pay for everything we want to know. Ofcourse still some people still teach for free, but most of the time google shows us Udemy, Coursera like that. What happened to gain knowledge through internet?1
I need your help.
I think I'm addicted to distractions and diversions. It's ruining my life and any chance to get experience.
Instead of actual developing, I constantly watch development tutorials and courses, listen to podcasts about development, read books and articles about development, post on development forums and go to development meetups.
I can't write a few lines of code without being 100% concentrated first, and afterwards I get distracted by everyday life events only to find myself at the end too tired to do anything productive and then surrender to sleep.
I'm getting depressed. How can I fight this? How can I push myself to work and be an actual developer?2
A few questions from a highschool student looking to go into a programming job post-secondary.
Did you go to college, university or jump right into it? Any regrets?
How did you get your first job?
I'm a little paranoid because while I'm great with programming and math (high 90 average) I am horrible with classes that require taking apart stories like English or history.4
Currently sitting on the toilet, browsing devrant while waiting on 4 Windows installations to finish up2
So, I recently switched from a windows laptop (XPS 13) to a macbook pro and my friend has been bugging me about whether I'll ever go back. He is a wannabe frontend developer and wants a windows laptop. No matter what I tell him, he seems to have tunnel vision. What are your thoughts on this? And what is your personal experience with Windows vs Apple for development?
(Pls don't kill me, it's my first post on devrant, thnx)16
I had most fun with my first project that got me into programming:
Simple IRC bot in python, that crawled info about DJ, Artist and Title from internet radio and post it into IRC every time something changes. It took me about month or two since I had to learn everything from zero and I was so excited that it worked.2
Well sure, right after I get my first 150 ++'s, I get another post with almost 150... I guess the jump start is the worst part4
Continuing my last random post. (Please don't bother to take a look at it.)
But, hey you. Yes you, get yourself one beer/whisky and cheers!!
Why? Because my first django project ran successfully in staging environment!! Ok, There were few little bugs. But I fixed most of them.
I don't drink. So please go and enjoy on behalf of me.
And don't drink too much. Keep one bottle for production deployment.
P.S. This is just a beginning of the new journey! Still, lot to learn and experience.2
Started writing a blog post about a simple React project I created. Several hours later and I've finally gotten to the part where I'm creating the first component.
...this going to be one long-ass blog post. :P3
Sharing my first published blog post on medium entitled: "My First Competitive Programming: What I learned" https://medium.com/@youawesum/...
I am sure this guy screws everybody up in viva or in interviews.
I mean, if you don't see the f'ing "evidencie" whether this app is "usefull" or not, why would you try the app in the first place.
Also if the app did not work for you, why won't you post the actual issue.
Any suggestions on what should I reply?2
Hi nerds :D This is my first post and I'm really excited that i found this community :) I will stay there for a long time :D3
Today I wrote my first small python application as an exercise:
Scraping all post EuroJackpot draws from a website, save them in a database, sort them, some checks and do some combinations. Everything quite clean in classes and functions.
And the "application" is just 100 lines big. I love it so far how much can be accomplished with just a few lines.
So, in "learning" programming I took some classes in school and got a start in the academic sense. But, as professors would assign projects above the position of the class I would have to learn elsewhere. So I attribute my learning to code to Stack Overflow and Google searches.1
If you search for c tags, the first post is c#, even with "c".
Happens on every stackoverflow search too.
This is the only reason I don't like c. If I need help with a simple problem, 50 lines of template code is not the answer ;(4
Last week, I didn't come up with something for this. Just now I experienced such a moment and remembered that there was a weekly rant on this topic.
The first bug report for my first ever project got resolved and the client commented with thanks and told to keep it up.
It feels awesome.
(tears of joy all over my eyes)
It's a moment that took me more than a year's effort to get a bug report and a positive feedback post it's fix.
I am all motivated now to work even better and wait for such awesome moments.
Hey, I'm new here, this is my first post and I want to start asking:
I'm not very good at Java and I'd like to learn Python but I don't have much time to improve Java and learn Python.
What should I focus on? (having in mind job offers and future)
Is it worthy to learn both?6
If I ask you to clarify a specific bug. I don't mean clarify everything you told me but that one. Spend 15 minutes telling him that he couldn't log in because he used an invalid username, while he kept on circling back to all kinds of other problems but that one. It's way too early to deal with this kind of crap, he literally called me when I just opened my mailbox (which is the first thing I do at work).
Doesn't help that I'm really done with the dude anyway. Not entirely his fault though, but I might post that in another rant.
When lector/teacher gives F to majority in computer graphics class because they don't have enough "Freshture" in their drawings...
First post BTW, hello devrant :)4
Just noticed this interestingly weird yet annoying thing Facebook does to force you to look at their advertisements !!
The first post in your news feed is something that is decided by their "ADVANCED ML+AI+... " algorithms.
The next post in your news feed is always an advertisement..usually tagged as "Sponsored".
After this, there is an insanely long delay in loading the subsequent post in your news feed, which in turn does not allow you to scroll further down and forces you to keep looking at the sponsored post in your news feed!
Noticed this on my Mac + FF 57.0.1
Makes me love devrant even more. Thanks for keeping it add free!
Every body has that moment when they code their first ever project and feel like flying on top of the world..
just remembering that moment when i had done my first ever app and i was like wooow i made this work.
so sharing my first ever project
i would love to see all the others had done as their first project feel free to post your's one2
.Net Dev here with a degree in graphic design. Almost 9 months into my first dev job, 85% of it has been dealing with god damn webforms. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't play too nice with a bootstrap / jQuery especially with code behind and when you have post backs. I never thought I would say this but fuck the front end lol at least when it come to this dumpster fire. At least I'm learning a lot but damn I can't wait to get back into an MVC project or service work.1
Actually I'm writing a Facebook Messenger Bot. Characters limit for each sending message is 320, so I made simple function to split messages on parts. I set the limit to 315, 5 characters less than Facebook.
Spend 3 days on finding solutio why messenger is sending only last part of message.
Today I made a change, set my character limit to 316 and what? It's working! Set it to 320? Working!
Messenger has problem only when it's 315!
Piece of shit...4
First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3
just started trying to master Emmet. I discovered it through https://vscodecandothat.com (thanks to whoever was the first person to post that link on here). any tips/tricks/tools for getting used to Emmet?
Well this would be the first post of myself in the past two years of dev life.
Hi fellas, I wanted to be a serious pro programmer. Even though I was working in a large scale enterprise product, I often feel like missing some awe(want to settle a job in Google) in my dev life. I managed to grasp and play profoundly in some trending and hot techies like Angular, React, Electron, Laravel, Symfony, Extjs, Spring....I still feel unlucky. :(1
I'm trying to deploy Ghost 1.x to Heroku to host my future coding blog. If (when) I achieve it I already know what the first post will be about Lol1
Hey guys, just wondering what you guys feel are the best resources to fully learn JS (looking to get into Node.JS).
Also, first post here! Been reading up, and can't stop!1
Using a physical keyboard seems to prevent me from being able to complete a post. I can open both a comment and new rant, type the contents but am not able to post. The button doesn't do anything.
Switching off the keyboard seems to cause strange behaviour (deleted this rant the first time I was trying)
Moto z play android 7.0
SwiftKey keyboard app
Logitec K810 Bluetooth keyboard3
First post woo
So I need some opinions guys...
Just started a new job and they are trying to force me to use eclipse rather than IntelliJ (which I have used for a good while )
I have asked for their reasoning and they simply say it's so everyone is using the same thing in the team , I think this is a pretty crap reason , especially when all the projects are created in maven , what do you all think ? Am I being unreasonable ? P.S I pay for the license myself6
In high school, 11th grade right now. Looking to apply for a webdev internship. Not really for the pay, more for the experience and having something to put on a résumé I guess.
I have done "webdesign" before, but that's only a static blog (for the curious, Jekyll, https://oxylibrium.me/ until July 30 when the domain expires)
They list... "Integrate front-end services with Bootstrap and jQuery" and similar, and they list skills required as "Website Designing".
Do I apply and see how it turns out? Any last words before your (hopefully friendly) neighbourhood python backend dev leaps to unknown waters?
(First post in a while; age++ happened a while ago but was really busy patching life up to post)
Thanks for your time,
Hi, first post here, I'm wondering, does anyone actually use uml diagrams? I completed a course in first year, apparently "system analysis and design" means draw uml diagrams all class, then draw more later, without ever actually touching a text editor.3
Is there a good place to post code and have people comment on the style or the logic? I'd love to start getting feedback on my code and break bad habits before they become too ingrained. Plus, our first project is a blackjack game, I'm working through it pretty well but I'm a little stuck and I think it's completely because I'm paranoid I'm not doing it well/right (even though I probably am).2
I'm almost at the point where I give up on this project, I'm banging my head too hard against the wall here.
I'm making an android app that should make it easier for local fishermen (hobby stuff, not enterprise things) to submit their catches to the local unions. For that to happen, I need to be able to fill a form in the app, more specifically, this form: http://karupaa.com/dk/...
After some research, I managed to figure out its probably a POST request, but I may be very wrong here.
Also figured out the URL to post to is probably either the first url given, or this one: http://karupaa.com/dk/...
I'm extremely confused at on this area, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
I dont really know anything about POST or GET requests, except for the quick comparison I read on W3Schools. Its an area Im lost in.
So I just saw an ad on Twitter about a project launched by IBM and the Linux foundation that aims to recruit developers to create programs that would help in case of natural disasters.
Do you think it can really make a difference or that it's just a marketing move from IBM?
Here's the link if you're interested :
This is the first social media I actually like. Came from codingconfessional because there's way less cancer here. Y'all rock.
I left a '# fix this thing here' in production code :/ I make myself feel better by pretending it's a hashtag.2
First, they added features that no developer understand : what the fuck is an optional value ?
And the documentation for iOS development is horrible. It took me 5 days to understand how the fuck we can make a POST HTTP Request with this fucking bad framework.3
Hello fellow devs, first post here but absolutely love this community!
Has anyone got advice for doing casual freelance work alongside a day job? I'm currently looking at sites like Fiverr and Upwork and would love to hear your advice/experiences/opinions.5
Just started a blog. It doesn't look pretty and I just grabbed the first fully free platform I could - I don't care how it looks. I intend to post on it every time I learn something interesting or have something I think is decent to say.
Check it out if you want
As my first post, i wanna ask a question :)
How is Gnu/Linux Sysadmin's possition in your country? :)
(If you want, you can say your country.)
If you post about how your program runs on first execution without testing it up until said execution, I will call you a terrible, unprofessional programmer, and an insult to the craft right in your mother's face.4
Hi everyone, I just published my first blog post and would love to hear comments. Thanks in advance.
First time I got group rant notification on Monday morning. I'm from India. Now I can post rant before others 😍.
Thank you @dfox1
My touch keyboard on this phone cant keep up w/ how fast I feel I need to type, so everytime after I blindly hit post I have to go back in my message, fix typo, then post, just to notice another f*@&ing typo I missed and have to do it all again. I know I should just slow down and do right in the first place, but when I try I get like this little internal anxiety that makes me uncomfortable and forces me to go faster. Maybe too much coffee...1
When project have errors related to libaraies that I don't fully understand what it does, what is the good habit for more efficient troubleshooting?
Should I read their GitHub documentation and understand the problem on my own first or simply find answer at SO?
And when should I just give up and post an issue?
When you've managed to get to +99 ok your first day on devRant but can't think of anything else to post to get you into 3 digits!
Well today I'm doing my first lecture for an audience of computer science student, the lecture ranges from problem solving and to the do's and 'donts' of working in industry.
Any messages you guys wants me to convey?
We've all worked with post-graduate employees that don't belong in any respectable work place.3
0. Go to YouTube
1. Scroll through your home page until you find the first clickbait video
2. Post video title here

Worst part of being a dev?
I'm sure it is working on a problem for a long time that you forget what the problem was in the first place...
Hey all! My first post isn't quite a rant, but rather a question.
I see a few posts that are about project managers. Now, I'm still doing IT at uni, but I was quite intrigued by PM when I found out one of my family friends is an engineering PM. The idea of PM appealed to me as I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do mostly after uni (not ruling out development, ofc!).
My question is whether or not it would be beneficial to have a PM with an IT background, and if so, to what extent do the benefits outweigh the lack thereof?
Sorry for the wordy post.4
Random keyboard suggestion post (start with coding, use center suggestion):
"Coding and a woman of a business location is for the first place and the woman who says the only way she can do it was a woman that has a lot to say to you have to do it with the girls that have a lot to say to the people that are not going on a break with the other girls"
You know, for the first time, I have had issues diagnosing an error (due to not having slept in about 75 hours due to the CEO slamming down on me to finish a project), and I posted on a forum. First time doing that, and they are fucking useless.
I may as well have delved into google and tries to diagnose the error. Done so, but you now what I find? People with the same fucking error, but no fucking resolution.
Stupid issue is a desktop support one, bloody Ubuntu won't install (gives me a shitty error and then loops back to installation post restart of my laptop. More than sure it has something to do with my graphics card).
Laptop decided to crash at the last moment, hence me installing Ubuntu again. Fucking errors, fucking help forums not helping, and fucking tiredness. On the plus side, coffee has kept me going longer than I thought.
I started a new blog and looking for feedback on my first post: https://blog.agilesyndro.me/posts/...
Started programming with asp classic. Will never forget the first time I ever managed to dump a post request on screen. Oh, the childhood of it...
I'm about to build a webshop for a customer with about 5000 products.
I'll also maintain the site after it's finished.
Is magento 2 the best choice or what should i go with? Fire away :)
(First post btw)2
Tips for the first day at a new internship that has a ton of potential to turn into a full time job post-graduation?1
OpenPGP or GPG?
++ first comment for OpenPGP, second for GPG (shameless ++ farming as well)
Post relevant fingerprints in comments if desired <34
It is always a problem when it comes to user username on app. Do you give a permission to set later? or at the first time they sign up? do they allowed to post without username?
mh, how much space i have in a post?? :D
first place is for an app to match students and mentors of my free learning community, secons place to the book listing app i creare to learn redux when it came out haha
midi controller with web audio api and well, the my biggest skeleton in the cupboard: Migrate my organization website from jekyll to hugo! -> it will never happen, i know!
Altera Quartus II. Fuck it. Fuck its licensing, its installation script, and its humongous size!!!
Seriously! It's almost impossible to install it properly on Linux in one go! 😠
And "Aborted. The application will now exit". Well, thank you my good man, for the fucking helpful error message!!! Go screw yourself!
Also, first post ^^
