Someone asked how patient you are?
I used Android studio on a laptop with 4 GB RAM.. and tested apps on emulator.
PS - It kept my hands warm in winters.14
Now I lay me down to rest,
I pray I pass tomorrow's test.
If I should die before I wake,
That's one less test I'll have to take.6
Wouldn't be amazing if we could charge like doctors?
User: good morning engie, just here for my checkup.
Engie: everything seems to be working perfectly with your laptop. That would be 70 bucks.
Not comparing professions just a random thought.12
When I was a kid, I thought softonic was the best website to download crack softwares
Ohh poor me 😐😐4
Dear devrant, I apologize for any really random rants for the night, I'm out drinking and clubbing with friends and am already having Dev thoughts.44
Breakdown of a casual work day:
50%- typing the same commands over and over again in my terminal and watching things build.
10% - lunch, coffee, attending nature’s calls, staring into space enjoying the headphone music.
10% - googling solutions. Only to find that 3 minutes later you’re reading a wikihow page on how to moonwalk.
10% - talking to fellow humans
10% - typing my password to unlock my computer. Mac users exclusive -typing keychain passwords
5% - contemplating what will happen if you suddenly get up and start dancing. Will you start a flash mob?
5% - random thoughts continue...why am I here? Why am I not partnering with Daft Punk to release a single?8
Today was my first day at work after Easter break...
It's 22:00 and my head is buried in my pillow filled by random thoughts of violence, rm -rf / schemes and questions about where my life is going!
So... Anyone wanna open a coffee shop?
Or something involving waffles...
I just love refactoring :) that feeling when an agonic 50loc method with ifs, loops, streams, other shit shrinks down to 3 lines with descriptive and SRP-compliant method calls.. When you can actually read code as a nicely written story. When there are no rubbish comments, cryptic variables and no overly complex if-else skyscrapers jamming all the logic in one conditional chain. When all the abstractions are designed so nicely and design patterns applied so perfectly that extending either of the components is as easy as a walk in a park.
When everything is nice and neat. Only then can I sleep well and enjoy the autumn :)
just some random thoughts after today's coding session :)5
A fun fact, dev in hindi/gujarati means "God".
Now I can't help but wonder if those languages were developed by time travellers!5
Things that needs precision,

Why the hell there is a skype meeting with around 100 participants... And all i have to do is just connect and listen to same 2-3 persons... Repeatedly.
PS- mostly no one even listens😑9
You guys ever thought about the concept that our universe might be a simulation written by some alien kid for a school project and got a C- for it?
Yeah...perhaps I should go to sleep18
So our class had this assignment in python where we had to code up a simple web scraper that extracts data of the best seller books on Amazon. My code was ~100 lines long( for a complete newbie in python guess the amount of sweat it took) and was able to handle most error scenarios like random HTML 503 errors and different methods to extract the same piece of data from different id's of divs. The code was decently fast.
All wss fine until I came to know the average number of lines it took for the rest of the class was ~60 lines. None of the others have implemented things that I have implemented like error handling and extracting from different places in the DOM. Now I'm confused if I have complicated my code or have I made it kind of "fail proof".
Rant by cozyplanes
F*** it. Seriously.
I am sure someone of u guys know I am applying for CS class.
I passed the test, and seems i failed the interview.
They asked me how i solved the problem in the test (the one i passed)
I explained, then, it seems the time(15min) has passed, so i came out while i was talking. They didn't asked my skills or interest, it was just explaining how i solved the question.
And the kid who got picked is the kid who did his final year project with scratch.
I just can't understand with the results.
1. WTF was that interview.
2. We first sent "about me" thingy, and i guess they only read that even though it may be fake. I wrote my skills (the one in profile especially unity and c# with some interest in ai and ml) but i guess they are looking for something else.
3. How can a scratch kiddy go to CS class? Maybe it was bcuz of the name. The final project name was BetaGo. Fuck it.
I hate life. Damn it. I hate life.
I thought for a moment, and the only way to succeed is to make the 2nd monument valley game. World famous, money, awesome life.
Just my thoughts. Random thoughts.
Thanks for reading til here. My mind is shaking now.
So I finished my first semester in NYU as a CD master. During the first semester I took a class called heuristic problem solving. Every week a competitive game will be introduced to us, and will be played in two weeks. And trust me, the games aren't easy. I teamed up with another guy who I had no idea was and named our team as we don't know. At the end of the semester we won seven out of nine games, and by won I meant that we beat the whole class in the match. And my teammate became a really good friend.
By telling this story, I want to make a point. I love problem solving, and not problems in a algorithm book where you apply an algorithm and do some trick to solve it, but real world problem where you hope for the best and anticipate, predict your opponent's move. However, American's school system doesn't teach that.
When I applied to graduate school, no school wanted me because I have an average GPA of 3.6, and no outstanding achievements. I can solve problems in my dream becaus I have an active mind, I can propose solution to a project one month before my teammates realized they essentially were doing what I told them the solution should be. But so what, I can't write those on my application.
One of the professor told me that my professor shared the story of my team during a faculty dinner, and they were very impressed by our achievement. So I guess I'm not dumb. But after all, companies and schools will look at your transcript and decide who you are.
I love myself for having random thoughts all the time that can lead to innovative problem solving. But I also hate myself for not able to study like the good kids are.10
GNU/Linux just announced they'll now be seeding /dev/random with keystrokes of users attempting to exit vim.
Dev thought of the day🤔
Are stickers for dev the equivalent to tattoos for normies?
Or are devs with hackathon tattoos?1
So one year ago, when I was second year in college and first year doing coding, I took this fun math class called topics in data science, don't ask why it's a math class.
Anyway for this class we needed to do a final project. At the time I teamed up with a freshman, junior and a senior. We talked about our project ideas I was having random thoughts, one of them is to look at one of the myths of wikipedia: if you keep clicking on the first link in the main paragraph, and not the prounounciation, eventually you will get to philosophy page.
The team thought it was a good idea and s o we started working.
The process is hard since noe of us knew web scraping at the time, and the senior and the junior? They basically didn't do shit so it's me and the freshman.
At the end, we had 20000 page links and tested their path to philosophy. The attached picture is a visualization of the project, and every node is a page name and every line means the page is connected.
This is the first open project and the first python project that I have ever done. Idk if it is something good enough that I can out on my resume, but definitely proud of this.
PS: if you recognize the picture, you probably know me. If you were the senior or the junior in the team, I'm not sorry for saying you didn't do shit cuz that's the truth. If you were the freshman, I am very happy to have you as a teamate.2
This is random stuff.
I wonder what would happen if an innocent new user unknowingly reports a rant written by @dfox or by @trogus themselves.🤔
Maybe a beautiful post or maybe a nice email like
"Dear @... you might not have realized but @trogus and @dfox are the creators of devRant"3
Every time my Linux crashes, I think I should stop doing random shit with my system....
And couple of days later I have the same thoughts.9
Why is the mediamaking noise out of Microsoft open sourcing their calculator app?
How is this helpful for the majority of community?
What's next? Open source notpad? And call them pioneers of Open source9
Sometimes I feel like committing suicide. Like today for example.
I don't wanna tell anyone why. I don't want to gather pity doots with regular updates about my deteriorating mental state anyway.
Yes I am on therapy. Yes I came back getting my Sacraments. Yes my family loves me. Yes my boyfriend loves me. Yes I have a stimulating work environment. Yes I have a sweet cat. Yes I contribute to open-source projects. Yes I am active in tech communities and some others. Yes I live alone right now. Yes I disconnected from social media. Yes I exercise daily and I take my meds. Yes I blocked everyone who was a nuisance to me. Yes I make memes. Everything you'd recommend in the comments, trust me, I have done it before in a sustained period of time.
I really just... give up.43
I haven't really known what to post. But I've decided not to care about being relevant or care about the like count. I'm a very competitive person so things like like count tend to effect the way I see the quality of a post.
I want devRant to be a place where I can be honest and feel safe even if I don't get the validation I sometimes wish I had. And hey maybe someone will think my opinions or thoughts are interesting.
So let's start with a little about me. I'm a 17 year old kid that loves programming. I work full time as a full stack web developer and I'm really the only web person. The current system is built on WordPress because of fucking course it is. I don't like it but I gotta keep it user friendly for less techy people to manage. No one likes have all minor changes and tweaks having to go through one person when they could do it themselves. So I manage.
I'd say my passion is more backend development but I do love having a pretty UI to display the results.
I've struggled with mental health the past few years but I'm doing much better. Even just last week I had an anxiety attack during a social event. I came here for the community and I do enjoy it, but I'm gonna try to make it an outlet. My best friend went off to university and I don't really have any IRL friends I can just be me around.
I don't have anything special to say. But if you read this thank you for listening to some random kid on the internet. I hope you have a great day.4
Why do people suggest using arch when they have many ready to go distros.....?
I've heard that chances for breaking the whole system is high and is risky...30
What do you use YouTube/NewPipe for?
I am using it to fall asleep when nothing else helps. Boring YouTubers are good for such a reason, guys lol.
I use it to do sport, to chill, to game, to be productive, to learn, to have some noise when I am bored (e.g. eating).
Offline music while taking a shower.
So tell me... What do you use it for?6
It's funny to think that in a world where we keep telling ourselves that each of us are unique, we are always forced to follow societal norms. And I'm not just talking about stuff like sexuality, even people with small quirks have to bend themselves in order to be accepted by the masses...3
Just some random thoughts looking at the soon-to-be new filtering feature.
Wouldn't it be nice if DevRant had a QR login like WhatsApp for easy login on desktop?
What about a "top rants" on profiles?
Oh what about an activity mosaic like GitHub's commit timeline?
Just some thoughts I had while punching my punching bag, it can get tedious.5
I love to program — I discovered that about myself a few years ago. Beforehand, I only KNEW how to program. But then I discovered the power programming gives you to create things, and even help your surroundings. So now, I can surely say, that I love programming. Heck, I am even dating a very talented programmer.
But despite all the pleasure I derive from it, I feel lonely sometimes. True, there are millions of programmers all over the world. I also know I am not the only one who prefers coding over going to the movies, taking a walk, eating or sleeping.
Why do I feel this way?
My loneliness is a gendered loneliness, as there are not many women in my field. For sure, there are women who study computer science in high school or at the university, and some even work as programmers. But they are very, very few!
I often underestimate my abilities and feel intimated for no apparent reason
I love my job. Minus that 1 stupid guy who I don't understand how he was hired. And minus one of the managers messaging me after hours to do work. Everyone else is alright, need to find a way to hide from that manager and work on projects exclusively with other managers D:
Anyone else ever felt like hiding from management? Lol2
The joy of learning typescript!
Finally became a 2GB lol just random but a milestone nonetheless. Thanks all for listening to my inner voice when i feel there is no place to get these recursive thoughts out of my head.
Have a great day2
At 12:38 AM, I am working in the office alone on a project that I hate with my guts.
Since last month I am feeling nothing. In the morning I don't want to get up and go to the office. I do not feel any excitement in my job. Even I hate talking to people, I still have to join 4 meetings and talk to them.
As the Project Manager, I hate taking responsibility for other people's code.
Writing emails to stupid business people and talking to them at the meeting, I hate those people.
I have worked for almost 16 hours per day for 2 months to finish this project. Even worked on Sunday. The project is not finished. The scope and requirement get changed daily. The client has no fucking idea of what they want.
I have no fucking idea what I want to in my life. I just want to go home and get a good fucking sleep.
Whoever is reading this, I hope you have better time in your life than me.
And please tell them this will get better. I need to hear it.5
Random thoughts that I need to put somewhere. that I’ve been holding in and have to get out.
I feel like I’m more welcomed and wanted here than in real life. My friends don’t really think about me when making plans anymore, no one really thinks of me in general.
In school I was the awkward kid that was nice to everyone and I’m not taking the whole graduation well. I miss high-school and my vocational school, I miss my friends and I’ve just felt like things ended too soon and I just kinda feel alone
I wish I could just sit down and program and not procrastinate the only time I seem to be able to get stuff done is when I force myself. I feel like I’m such a shitty developer for not fighting it better. I need to be better.
I’ve not had a good few weeks. Since I’m taken a semester off from college no one in my family besides me is able to stay with a family member that’s in the hospital. I volunteered because I care for them deeply and want to help them. but it takes a huge toll on me since I have to be the one that listens to the doctors tells the rest of my family what’s happening. While Im kinda freaking out because I’m scared and nervous and NOT READY and I’ve had to stay a week there and I’ve been having to stay on and off and I haven’t really told anyone how I really am feeling about it all because I don’t like to be vulnerable in front of people and it’s been really hard and taking a toll and not helping the procrastination.4
Heyyy DevRant Fam! It’s definitely been quite awhile since i have posted in this amazing community and I apologise, i’ve been extremely busy with my uni work and just life caught up to me 😅, also as always I really hope everyone is doing very well wherever you may be as always :-).
I’d love to ask you guys a question that has been on my mind for a while now 😊, I’ve been thinking of making my own password manager for a side/fun project. What I’ve been doing is I’ve found a open source project on github and downloaded it , loaded it up and read through some code, from memory the project is called ‘keepass’ and its written in c++!.
I’d love to get some advice from you guys, how do i go about learning and understanding open source code :-)? What is some advice you can give to me? Anyways I’d be very grateful for any piece of advice :D once again as always hope everyone has an amazing Sunday night and long weekend, wherever you may be!.
Thank you for reading my very long post sorry for rambling on 😅.
I do not represent the company I work for. My rants do not imply only the personal problems of mine but also the problems in general. I represent only myself. Judge me for my words. Don't judge the company that I'm currently at or previously was.
Unless I'm clearly mentioning the specific environment.7
When you just get to bed and your brain decides to finally solve the problem you've been trying to solve the whole day...1
Given how precise developers have to be with their code to get it to run, you'd think they'd be better spellers when they write blog posts. 🤔1
It's funny when I see some people share the same stuff in all of their social media account one after another.
Haha. Probably more like to show off.3
Oh, ho, ho
It's Friday you know
Never believe, it's not so
It's Friday, you know
Never believe, it's not so
Have to stay awake
Can't wait to see tomorrow's day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning
Lazy day in bed
Music in my head
Crazy music playing in the morning light
On the other hand gotta prep for some interviews next week.... Oh and have dentist this weekend 😚😱😨😰😵
Having no process at all;
Just randomly choose between texts, FB Messenger, WhatsApp, voice clips, and spread over random points in time..
If you do this to me: Yes. I hate you.
My thoughts right now:
1. If waifus exist (Alice lol), where are all the husbandus?
2. I want a cheeseburger
3. The picture. My brain in a test.10
To all the Canadian developers in Devrant I have a serious question...
Rest of the World: 'isVisible'
>>> is this true??1
Even though I bought Prime for cord-cutting now whenever I need to buy something I have an urge to just buy from Amazon because I feel like I'm making back what I paid since shipping is now free 2-day for anything and 5% cash back...
And when you search for anything, there's usually 1 result that's like Amazon Choice and I see there's a price huge price cut...
But in the back of my mind, I stop and think does this make sense. Could be cheaper elsewhere? Are these deals really deals...
And that $120 was for video and I'm pretty sure Amazon is not losing money no matter how many orders I make our how much I "save"....
And why am I even trying to make back X by doing Y....
Yes totally random but thoughts, how do you think about this?7
There's a 3 Lane street and 2 self driving cars are in the middle Lane but heading for each other.
What do they do so they don't crash?
What if they can't brake?15
So after programming in the Vue framework, I have developed a habit of Ctrl + S for anytime I would usually use Enter. I just typed in setting in the search bar and press Ctrl + S.
What are your habits you took up from programming and just cannot shake it down in day to day life.7
What are the rules in a general work environment if a developer gets slightly violent?
(Emphasis on "slightly")
What happens to that developer in such case?6
There is no such thing as a "Random Error".
Unless you are using rand() to select a random index from an array. And you forget to add - 1 to the generated index.
Now that is one hell of a random error!
I'm not a Wordpress pro, but i've done some work on it and... well, the HTML + PHP mix is the only evidence you need to convince someone, there is no god, only satan, but other then that, it's hard to find anything else that your clients will accept & can use. And yes it's the most important thing - at the end of day, they are the one giving you money.
- the Wordpress dev community is pretty cool.
- everything has been invented, so the development is pretty easy.
- if you have something more fancy to do, there is always a Wordpress API.
PS - fuck HTML + PHP mix.1
This is kind of a loaded question because it's so broad. So I'll just throw my thoughts down on the idea anyways.
Honestly with all the way that game dev has come it's so sad to see just the increase of people that are so ungrateful and dont appreciate what went into making it. Complaining about small not a big deal bugs that occur, blaming the devs for stuff that's completely not up to them but the "idea man", etc. Although good things are coming out of it. Like children wanting to get into it more which is awesome and indie developers basically holding up the industry while majority of the AAA companies get their shit together. So I see all of that increasing. Also I'm expecting to see the Rust language start to be used in AAA titles replacing C++
Software dev well I see python making a bigger uprising and I'm hoping people become more accepting of python as well.
These are all just random thoughts so please take that into consideration
Hello to my awesome friends at DevRant! I really wish you all a very happy new year and really hope 2019 brings you the absolute best it has to offer! Well today was quite a great day.
What happened was we have this store here called ‘rebels sport’ which is really all around Australia in general i think, anyways i bought a pair of new slippers which are an absolute beauty.
So i get into line and this happens, i see this pretty young thing who happens to be around my age working in checkout section of the shop.
So i have my slippers in hand and heres the conversation.
First thing i say is:
Me: “Hi, i usually go to the beach “
Her: “you usually go to the beach?” *laughs*
Me:” i mean are these slippers waterproof??”
I Dont think i will be walking into the shop anytime soon 🤣😩
Hope your day/night goes incredibly well! ❤️
Sorry for the very long rant. I tried to summarise it. There's still more on my mind.
Have you ever woken up angry at the world for all its ignorance and stubbornness? I'm a first year computer science student who knows more about photosynthesis, DNA replication, genes, Bernoulli random variables, Poisson distribution, etc than I do about nested FUCKING "FOR" loops and classes.
How in the fuck can you tell me that informatics doesn't "fit in with computers science" and I can only have statistics... bitch, I'm the one paying, plus it's a FUCKING ELECTIVE. I don't wanna do statistics. What's the point of learning, actually, cramming something for 4 months. This shit is why people leave this country and go work overseas. And you call them unpatriotic... Really?😑
It honestly doesn't feel like I'm studying computer science. This is a childhood dream, not something I just picked up on because I thought "hacking" was cool. Majority of the students don't even know what computer science is, they just chose it because well... Programming.😕
Fuck this university for ruining my dream. Right now I'm in a bad place. Anxiety is a bitch. Depression is slowly creeping in. I'm having thoughts of quitting.
Kids are having thoughts of killing themselves because they failed something that you forced them to do and convinced them that it was beneficial to computer science when it was not. Instead of lying to people, do some actual FUCKING research and start over. Majority of us have to finance ourselves through loans. The more time we spend here, the bigger the debt becomes.
What we're fighting for is a piece of paper with your name on it and some stranger's signature on it who's going to shake your hand one day as if he's known you for a long time.
And don't fucking celebrate a QS ranking of 350-400 for computer science. It's like celebrating an award for participation.
FUCK THIS UNIVERSITY.
FUCK THIS COUNTRY'S EDUCATION SYSTEM.5
So related to my previous rant about monkeys:
I happened to come across an old PPTX I made for our company's "new goal" (~4 years old) for Engineering Excellence. (I was searching my PC for old evidence to resolve a dispute with health care provider... staffed by monkeys... that keeps billing me for random amounts even though I paid the correct amounts... 3 years ago)
Very Long, random and pretentiously philosphical, beware:
Imagine you have an all-powerful computer, a lot of spare time and infinite curiosity.
You decide to develop an evolutionary simulation, out of pure interest and to see where things will go. You start writing your foundation, basic rules for your own "universe" which each and every thing of this simulation has to obey. You implement all kinds of object, with different attributes and behaviour, but without any clear goal. To make things more interesting you give this newly created world a spoonful of coincidence, which can randomely alter objects at any given time, at least to some degree. To speed things up you tell some of these objects to form bonds and define an end goal for these bonds:
Make as many copies of yourself as possible.
Unlike the normal objects, these bonds now have purpose and can actively use and alter their enviroment. Since these bonds can change randomely, their variety is kept high enough to not end in a single type multiplying endlessly. After setting up all these rules, you hit run, sit back in your comfy chair and watch.
You see your creation struggle, a lot of the formed bonds die and desintegrate into their individual parts. Others seem to do fine. They adapt to the rules imposed on them by your universe, they consume the inanimate objects around them, as well as the leftovers of bonds which didn't make it. They grow, split and create dublicates of themselves. Content, you watch your simulation develop. Everything seems stable for now, your newly created life won't collapse anytime soon, so you speed up the time and get yourself a cup of coffee.
A few minutes later you check back in and are happy with the results. The bonds are thriving, much more active than before and some of them even joined together, creating even larger bonds. These new bonds, let's just call them animals (because that's obviously where we're going), consist of multiple different types of bonds, sometimes even dozens, which work together, help each other and seem to grow as a whole. Intrigued what will happen in the future, you speed the simulation up again and binge-watch the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Nine hours passed and your world became a truly mesmerizing place. The animals grew to an insane size, consisting of millions and billions of bonds, their original makeup became opaque and confusing. Apparently the rules you set up for this universe encourage working together more than fighting each other, although fights between animals do happen.
The initial tools you created to observe this world are no longer sufficiant to study the inner workings of these animals. They have become a blackbox to you, but that's not a problem; One of the species has caught your attention. They behave unlike any other animal. While most of the species adapt their behaviour to fit their enviroment, or travel to another enviroment which fits their behaviour, these special animals started to alter the existing enviroment to help their survival. They even began to use other animals in such a way that benefits themselves, which was different from the usual bonds, since this newly created symbiosis was not permanent. You watch these strange, yet fascinating animals develop, without even changing the general composition of their bonds, and are amazed at the complexity of the changes they made to their enviroment and their behaviour towards each other.
As you observe them build unique structures to protect them from their enviroment and listen to their complex way of communication (at least compared to other animals in your simulation), you start to wonder:
This might be a pretty basic simulation, these "animals" are nothing more than a few blobs on a screen, obeying to their programming and sometimes getting lucky. All this complexity you created is actually nothing compared to a single insect in the real world, but at what point do you draw the line? At what point does a program become an organism?
At what point is it morally wrong to pull the plug?15
Just implemented policy-based authorization in dotnet core, long story short to lock an endpoint to a certain policy I just add: [Authorization(Policy = "NAME")]
on top of function/controller declaration
Was wondering how it is done in other languages, like NodeJs, Java, Kotlin ...etc11
!rant Just random thoughts
Funny things aside, our job is very important when it comes to influence people through ads, well presented "studies", quizzes and polls that contribute on people's decisions. I think we all have some kind of story that we can more or less relate to what is described in the article below.
It would be wise to think twice not only about algorithms, UX and implementation details but also about ethics. We should not have as our primary goal to make the browsing experience more pleasing but safer and easier to avoid scams and traps.
Your thoughts on the topic?
If google improves their tech at this rate, what's gonna happen? Is it for the good or bad? They are getting access to the world data. Random thoughts.
Just asking a few questions about anyone's opinion, answer whatever you want:
Is self studying your own responsibility and if so, do you prioritize learning stuff you do at work? Do you share it with colleges?
What is your preferred way to study?8
And when you as a developer, market yourself, you are not doing anything bad. If you truly believe that you know your stuff and you are someone who can bring value to people, there is nothing wrong to let people know that. You would actually help them
What if IBM's AI is a way to gather data on a bigger scale. I see many big companies and governments relying on it rather than having their own local AI servers. What do you think? 🤔3
*sitting on the toilet... random thoughts, then... *
Every imaginable program and beyond that can be made already exists.
They are all just a number in the infinite natural number scale.
*mind... blown... *
Therefore, if we test every number, and try to execute it, we would find Half Life 3... or rather multiple possible versions of it.
*double mind blown... *6
Am a developer am never coming to work a weekend. My dog will be sick if I have been sick for the last 12 weeks.
