Windows: I need to update
Me: Fuck off I'm doing an assignment
Windows: Nah mate I need to update like right fucking now
Me: For fucks sake, go on then, but if you take longer than 30mins I'll delete you again
Windows: *Updating 25% done*
*Grub rescue screen*
Me: You fucking cunt29
- Run a Win10 in a VM
- Have >20GB of free space on host
- W10 decides to download updates
- your host OS runs out of free space
- VM gets paused due to lack of free space
20GB for an update.. seriously..
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME????
*dad's w10 computer running super slow*
*checks task manager*
100% disk usage
*Compattelrunner.exe is at the top of the list in disk usage*
*searches online to find what the hell that is*
"Compattelrunner.exe collects program telemetry information if opted in to the Microsoft EatASackOfDicks Customer Experience Fuckup"
Telemetry is supposed to be disabled on this computer.
What the fuck Microsoft, if you want to straight out lie to my face as a customer at least try to not be so obvious that you basically lock down my computer with your telemetry shit.3
Had the Windows Insider Preview for a month or so to get Ubuntu Subsystem early back when it was Insider-only.
Turns out that your license policy changes when you use Preview builds: if your PC isn't updated to a certain build by checkpoints set throughout the year, your license expires and you have to reinstall Windows. No way to recover anything already on the device. So if you get Insider Preview and shut your laptop off for too long...
Thus began a killer combo attack on my Surface Pro 3.
While trying to figure out what was going on and loading up a recovery on a flash drive, the Surface Pro 3 BIOS was sitting idle behind me. On 100% CPU. The only reason I think this is that by the time I noticed the insane fan noise, the screen was hot enough to burn my finger as I tried to turn it off. The heat sensor triggered it to shut off before I could, though.
That heat sensor, however, won't turn it off if it's busy installing Windows, supposedly to keep anything from getting hopelessly corrupted. What followed we're 3 hours of fan whirring from a slab of metal hot enough to cook an egg with.
Windows is back and working. The battery indicator, however, melted during reinstallation. And the battery lasts an hour, max. Thankfully I'm not out of a tablet, but it seems to me that W10 is becoming more and more like malware, just waiting for you to activate one of it's delightful payloads.4
Can someone help me? Dont know what to do, im searching on page 5 of Google... I tried everthing and all the same 😢10
Is there a mp4 player on linux than can play in mini view like w10? VLC got a limit on how small the windows is allowed17
Windows 10, updating to version 1809.
That was only 3 months ago 🤷♂️
Preparing to install: 0%, 8%, 0%, 24%, 3%, 0%, 19%
I think I’m setting a restore point for this one 😣5
Everyday I prefer Linux more and more over Windows 10...
...even running a "rm -Rf /" is exponentially faster7
FUCK Windows 10 and it's HATEFUL tendency to open everything with FACKING Edge even though it overrides that the default browser is chrome. Especially fucking Skype for business.
Fack Skype too11
Every time I stop playing a game, W10 helpfully says:
Your notifications will remain quiet here in Action Centre whilst you're gaming.
Only see notifications from your important people and apps.
It's not important to tell me every bloody time !
There is a button labelled:
Turn Off Now.
But what does it turn off..
The last time I saw someone press a button like that, it took me 3 days to find out how to turn something really quite important back on again !
FUCK Y.O.U. windows 10 for making my pc not recognize mics on the front port.
Seriously i usually dont mind windows that much but really ?! Oh hello i noticed you changed your os version THEN LET ME FUCK UP YOUR DRIVERS SO YOU FEEL LIKE A RETARD NOT BEING ABLE TO TALK.
Worst is i feel like an idiot because i have no idea how to fix this shit apart from buying a new PC, aaaaand im pretty sure while trying to fix it i made it worse
FUCK IM A SCRUB. FUCK PEOPLE ON INTERNET AND THEM "It works". NO IT DOESNT !
And now i feel like a worthless dev because of w1057
You stupid lousy price of potato shit windows, yes that’s right - this pissed of windows user is pissed the fuck right off.
Here I am letting you sit there idling along and then I press the start button, you know that fucking button I press regularly for fucking years, only for you to go “fuck you, I’m going to blue screen instead” like what the flying fuck? There hasn’t been any updates in a while that I’ve noticed but this shit is just a shit.
So what ever, let’s reboot this mother fucker, oh wait now you can’t fucking boot, I can hear the hdd spinning a million miles an hour (coz non ssd) but noooo your just going to sit there like a dumb ass prick who doesn’t know what the fuck your doing.
So fine, let’s pull out that old USB with w10 on it and do a MBR repair... (coz nothing else will fucking work in your shit list of options) ok so apparently an MBR repair gets you booting.. but wait there’s more, now you useless piece of shit are going to run a scan disk which has sat at 0% for the past 20 minutes and I don’t think I’m ever going to see that fucker move, I get it you want to do something useful, but Fucking Do it already!
Like wtf, how does a stable system just decide to shit itself.
Oh and before you say it.. no I can’t install Linux on this piece of shit, see my previous rants for that problem.6
You know a good way to handle all of the issues with W10 force updating your system? Do it yourself FFS!
You know there are updates. Windows has been telling you ...
Pick a damn time, start the update and go get a coffee, lunch, take a dump or go home for the day.
It's *never* going to be the right time if you don't choose it. It will always be an inconvenience or you'll be "in the middle of something important" and then you'll get all pissy about it.
Minutes of your life lost..
Hey, lets use that hibernate option !
So much faster !
Lets do that again..
And, oh dear it hangs..
Not sure why, maybe because I left a video running, or I've too many icons on my desktop ?
After months, years, still don't know why it does that !
So far best answer is, after about a dozen hibernates, do a restart !
Answers on a postcard..
Still, I suppose we have to be thankful it even works in W10, as going way way back since it was ever created, I couldn't even get it to work properly, let alone repeatedly..
Maybe Windows 11 it will work perfectly..23
So a couple months ago, my dad called me to try and solve a problem he was having in his work.
You see, my dad owns a driving school and he was teaching 14 and 15yo kids how to ride mopeds and their theory exams are made in the school's facility, by going to this website of the entity that rules the moped teaching thing. When the time to have the exams came, they couldn't even see the exams and one of the kids had one of his attempts wasted (they had 3 attempts). We mailed and called the entity multiple times, to no avail, as they told us to "check the website, the instructions are all there". They were also trying to get it together but they couldn't. Here's the "funny" part: the software in which the exams were done ran on XP and there was no way in hell we could make it work on our W10 PCs. Not to mention this is a natiowide problem.
We reinstalled Java to v.7.9 (I think...?) as the "instructions" told us, with no results whatsoever.
So my dad decided to call me and asked me to bring a PC that didn't run W10. The closest thing to XP I could think of was my uncle's Toshiba, that had Vista, so I went to his house and grabbed it and drove to my dad's school. Even in compatibility mode, it didn't work. Everyone was in despair LoL. I was even put on the phone with the entity's technician, who didn't know how to solve it either but was trying, as well with our tech guy.
After a bit of running around and crying inside, our secretary remembered we still had a tower on site that ran XP. We went for the thing and connected it and booted it up. After reinstalling Java and setting security to "medium" (required), and meddling with zoom (the window was too small to show the whole exam and if the window showed up before we set the zoom to 75% or so we couldn't choose the answers) it was finally set to do the exams.
I've never felt so relieved for solving tech stuff LoL. It took me 3h to get it done and I feel it would have been easier if we had remembered about the tower earlier but oh well what can one do.8
Yesterday I talked to my client for 1 hour about a problem she has on my website. When she does something on the administrative website, internet explorer stops working.
Then I told her: "try Google Chrome or Firefox" and I explain why Chrome or Firefox should work. Today, she tells me that it does not work yet and sends me a picture of her screen with the problem (not a print screen, a cell phone photo, with the sun on the screen so I do not see the screen). It was the same problem as the other days. But she was on ... wait for it ... Edge (yes, she's on w10 and she uses Internet Explorer).
So I reply "try Chrome or Firefox.".
I said nothing else and she just thanks me for the help.13
So, a few words about this setup :
- I am not Portuguese, my girlfriend got this poster while on a trip
- The second monitor is very old and uses fluorescent tubes. It's shitty and not stylish, but useful at times
- Yes, I use a standalone scanner. Every multifunction printer I've had ended up suiciding itself, and suicided the built in scanner with it. A standalone scanner should be indestructible.
- The case is open because I haven't paid much attention to fans and stuff, so it gets pretty hot when gaming
- Talk about gaming : I dual boot W10/Ubuntu but use the original Gnome DE with Adwaita Dark (I love it). However, W10 is only useful for Lightroom and games. When Steam released proton, I decided to start using Darktable for photo editing in order to ditch Windows once and for all. That will probably happen in the coming months.
- I have not wired my home yet, so I use a router as Wi-Fi receiver.
- The top of the desk is not the original one. It used to be a glass one, but I didn't like the feel and it was too small. So I made a wooden one and painted it with paint my father had left over. However, it ended up looking hideous and sticks to the skin when resting on it for a long time. It has to be changed/fixed.
- The headphones hanger is just a big ass screw, and the headphones jack has been fixed at least a dozen times. I even changed the cable two times.
- The mic is shitty but cost only 8€ on eBay.2
tldr; Windows security sucks. You as a org-admin cant do anything about it. Encrypt your device. Disable USB Live boot in the bios and protect it with a STRONG password.
First of i just want to say that i DO NOT want to start the good ol' Linux VS Windows debate. I'm just ranting about Windows Security here...
Second, here's why i did all of this. I did all of this mainly becuase i wanted to install some programs on my laptop but also to prove that you can't lock down a Windows pc. I don't recomend doing this since this is against the contract i signed.
So when i got my Laptop from my school i wanted to install some programs on it, sush as VS Code and Spotify. They were not avalible in the 'Software Center' so i had to find another way. Since this was when we still used Windows 7 it was quite easy to turn sticky keys in to a command prompt. I did it this way (https://github.com/olback/...). I decided to write a tutorial while i was at it becuase i didn't find any online using this exact method. I couldn't boot from a USB cause it's disabled in the bios wich is protected by a password. Okey, Sticky keys are now CMD. So let's spam SHIFT 5 times before i log in? Yeah, thanks for the command promt. Running 'whoami' returned 'NT SYSTEM'. Apparantly NT System has domain administator rights wich allowed me to make me an Administrator on the machine. So i installed Everything i wanted, Everything was fine untill it was time to migrate to a new domain. It failed of course. So i handed my Laptop to the IT retards (No offense to people working in IT and managing orgs) and got it back the day after, With Windows 10. Windows 10 is not really a problem, i don't mind it. The thing is, i can't use any of the usual Sticky keys to CMD methods since they're all fixed in W10. So what did i do? Moved the Laptop disk to my main PC and copied cmd.exe to sethc.exe. And there we go again. CMD running as NT System on Windows 10. Made myself admin again, installed Everything i needed. Then i wanted to change my wallpaper and lockscreen, had to turn to PowerShell for this since ALL settings are managed by my School. After some messing arround everything is as i want it now.
'Oh this isnt a problem bla bla bla'. Yes, this is a problem. If someone gets physical access your PC/Laptop they can gain access to Everything on it. They can change your password on it since the command promt is running as NT SYSTEM. So please, protect your data and other private information you have on your pc. Encypt your machine and disable USB Live boot.
Have a good wekend!
*With exceptions for spelling errors and horrible grammar.4
FUCKING WINDOWS DECIDES TO UPDATE WHEN I HAVE 6 PROGRAMS OPEN AND NOT EVEN SAVED EVERYTHING.
10+ chrome tabs with research pages that are irrecoverable.
That when I leave for a couple of minutes to take a brake. I'm not even notified beforehand.
I'm fine tho which is nice. Gonna cry and sleep now to work hard again tomorrow.10
*installing linux on my mini laptop*
- Dad: "you should make a backup image of windows 10"
- Me: "LOL NOPE!"
(With 2gb of ram, linux makes it the perfect lightweight coding machine. But with W10? Jesus christ)6
So I finally dual booted ubuntu 16 lts alongside w10 on a laptop with nvidia optimus.
As have next to 0 XP with linux systems almost every step needed extensive googling, but in the end I have
- vs code
- cloned my xmlRant repo that uses asp.net core 1.1.2
- built it sucessfully
- *bonus* figured out how to use remmina to connect rdp to workplaces win 2008 r2 gateway
Very happy ^___^2
So much windows 10 updating rants. I have w10 aside with Fedora. I believe that last time I started windows somewhere in June. I'm really intrigued to see those updates on my laptop. Going to boot into Windows now. Wish me luck.11
Got my laptop back from SquareTrade today. This is after a month, 2 weeks of which they gave no status updates.
Per their "Repair Summary":
Reported issue: Power/Charging port
Parts repaired/replaced: None. OS reloaded
(Note this was originally a Windows 10/Gentoo setup)
WTF??? I thought the extra M2 SSD they included might have been the drive they had replaced, but nope. Both are blank (one W8/what the computer originally came with, the other W10).
I'm at a loss right now.1
So I did a clean Windows 10 restore recently on my laptop from Insider program to just Anniversary Update . Went away from my computer for a day or so by the time I got updates completed and Visual Studio up and running. So earlier today I went to start back up development on a project of mine to come across the emulators not working. The thing is that I lost 6 hrs of production to figure this out. I tried everything possible so I gave up and reinstalled VS to just remember I forgot to turn on my Hyper-V in BIOS setting. So I'm half way in VS reinstalling and I can't do anything about it. GOD FUCKEN DAMMIT W10!8
Ok, HOW I can remove Microsoft Edge from windows?
And how I can change completely language to another? Just changed from my native -> English. And now half of apps are in my native and half is in English?
And lastly is this true? Microsoft spams some f*cking Candy ____ saga games on menu selection all the time??21
Windows 10 Rant:
Windows 10 has so many frustrating issues. Most recent being when my computer, if the PC goes into sleep mode, or sits unused for 40 ish minute period of time (screen still on), when I return; awake the computer from sleep or sit back after being away, the WiFi stops working. Turning WiFi on and off again doesn't fix it, only way is to restart the device, which is damn annoying if you have multiple windows, chrome tabs, or programs running. Having to open and set everything back up is a complete pain.
I must point out, this issue only started happening when my device (auto) updated itself to the Anniversary build of W10.
First allocate all day..
W10 Update time !
Then, watch as your multi-monitor setup loses its drivers and only 2 of your 4 monitors are working..
Meanwhile, still not done all the updates, and CPU is running wild doing some kind of indexing..
A bit like playing wack a mole as you try and guess which monitor Windows is going to boot to this time around..
Oh look, its gone for the portrait one, this time in landscape mode, good thing I can tilt my head enough..
Also a good thing I have one of those icon position restore apps, or they would be all over the place again once I get things back to where they should be..
Have you done your updates . . .6
Woah, it seems that since there is the "w10" tag quite everyone here in Devrant started programming when he was 6-7 years old... Come on10
So...i have lost the count of the number of posts ranting about W10 sudden restarts because of the updates. Many people lost their valuable work and many more were just annoyed by this occurence...
But it has NEVER happened to me. Every time there was a pop-up message asking me if it was an appropriate time to update. On some occassions i would postpone the same update for numerous times, and it still did not force-restart my laptop.
Question: Is my machine buggy or do people do not know how to set working hours on their machines and postpone their updates?17
How hard can it be to make a calculator app. Apparently Microsoft cannot get it right. You might say hey, but it works already. No it does not. See in math 1-(-1)=2 because the double minus sign cancel each other and turn into a plus. Well the w10 calculator app, just does 1-1=0 and show that this is the result. Yes this is the result of one minus one. This is not the result of one minus minus one. This is basic math .... Stop focusing on the interface and code the base right Microsoft.15
"Oh you didn't save the last minutes of coding? Better restart and you can't refuse" ...I am so happy to still use W7 on my desktop Pc.4
I'm coding when suddenly a wild popup appears: "w10 scheduled to restart outside of active hours".
-> I want to change my active hours so I can progress w/o being interrupted by windows.
-> w10 doesn't allow me to set it to 8AM - 10PM because:
"Active hours can be set between 1 and 12 hours."
Well.. not sure what to think about this restriction.. It's definitely not dev-friendly ;)10
FX [ Adds another HD to PC.. ]
FX [ Boots into Window 7.. ]
"Serial number no longer valid, hardware change.."
No problem, I'll just check my serial number, oh wait, its vanished from the machine !
FX [ Time Passes . . . ]
After searching my paperwork, I think I find the right W7 serial..
Now its asking me if I want to buy another, phone up, or put another one in and try activation online..
Well, lets try giving it what I think is the old previous one it had, and see if its happy.
And its happy !
Until the next time I 'radically' change the hardware..
Meanwhile, same PC, under W10, doesn't get upset about the issue !
I guess anybody as dumb as me using Windows 10 for work would hate the new stupid automatic updates. But it went to the highest level for me.
I was working on a huge ugly ass PHP script. My hands were frantically pressing keys as I witnessed Windows restarting itself without warning to install updates. Which failed. Then restarted two more times.
I ragequitted W10 as fast as light I swear.5
Week 1 Day 1
It's a little late to do a whole big list of things I want to change going into 2018 so I'll just keep this focused on one thing: I do NOT want to work a minimum wage job by the end of 2018, preferably by the end of May.
So I'm gonna change that; starting now. I got accepted to the Grow with Google Challenge scholarship I may or may not have applied to while blackout drunk and I realize that drunk me was watching out for sober me. He set up a good start to getting me away from unloading trucks at 2AM and into a nice comfy chair where I can replace physical pain with mental anguish. But all kidding aside I'm really excited to start this course but I have no drive and motivation is a little hard to come by around here (The Fairy Godmother is MIA) so I'm going to be posting these rants daily in the hopes that it keeps me obligated to not waste the opportunity given to me. So without further ado, day 1 everybody.
I started today really simple. I signed up for a slack account, got Udacity set up so I was officially enrolled and everything, then moved on to setting up my laptop for android development. I wanted a fresh start so I when ahead and wiped my hard drive and looked at a few different OSes to see what fit my needs. After trying to mess around with Arch Linux and failing, I moved to Debian, I liked Debian a lot but I'm not completely comfortable with it just yet and I don't want to waste a lot of time having to familiarize with a new OS when I just want to dig in. So eventually I ended up with Windows 10, for the convenience and ease of use, but decided to put a spin on it and download the Ubuntu subsystem for W10 so I could still practice on something similar to a GNU/Linux OS. So far everything is set up, I have the only 4 applications I will need: chrome, android studio, google play Music, and devrant of course, and I intend to keep all other distractions off of this machine. Overall I'm feeling really good and I'll follow up tomorrow with some actual coding and whatnot and we'll go for there.1
I was remote desktop connection to a friends fairly slow W10 computer and noticed something odd, several PowerShell windows started to open up, repeatedly.
I just opened up Firefox and had logged into a gambling website.
I closed them all within a few seconds, nothing appeared textwise to popup in them.
Ran a full virus scan, it didn't find anything.
So, what was all that about then ?
Obvious this to do, is run different virus scanners to see if another one finds anything.
But was a virus/trojan, or something else more innocent ?
Not seen that kind of behaviour before, and google wasn't a lot of help..
Anyone thoughts on what was happening ?
EventViewer wasn't really much use..
I'm suspicious because it happened when logged into a gambling site, maybe that was infected.
Currently installing & updating w10 on a eeePC R101 with 2GB of ram.... disk cleanup is slooooooow...5
W10 remote desktop, what's the best free downloadable without needing to register application out there ?
Trying AnyDesk, but it doesn't cope with window popups well on a machine with dual graphic cards.
As in, it doesn't show them, so I have to walk all the way to the machine to see them in person, which rather defeats the whole remote thing !6
I love to work on my machine, and being it
my work-horse for school and side-projects, I have a neat dualboot of Windows 10 and (driver-related) Ubuntu Mate.
Ditched Mate because screen tearing, got Cinnamon, but I have to say, that W10 UI appeals a lot for me, so... what kind of Windows is this?4
I went to the movies yesterday and I watched "My Lady".
The only screen of a mobile phone was that of a W10 mobile.
That really surprised me and filled me with joy... 😁2
I forgive Microsoft for all the bugs on W10. Why? Because Cortana on Android mirror notifications from phone to PC smoothly. Saving so much time. And I get to know if I miss calls or messages. Brilliant.6
-Writing engineering thesis
-Have two W10's, because of requirements for HoloLens emulator
-Turn off computer
-Run it again and bootloader doesn't loading
-Heart attack guaranteed3
FX [ Gets woken at 3am in the morning by PC turning itself on.. ]
This might solve the issue..
After a bit of googling and investigating, I discovered that:
updateorchestrator - Backup Scan
Was ticked to turn on my PC to do its thing..
Following advice here to install PSTools, I was able to untick the turn on bit, I didn't change anything else.
psexec.exe -i -s %windir%\system32\mmc.exe /s taskschd.msc
Will that fix it ?
And what does 'backup scan' do ?
Just been googling and this might also work:
In case anyone is having the same issue..
So, could this be the phantom windows update thing that happens even though I've tried to turn off all windows updates by every other means ?11
Holy shit. Its been like 3 hours to get this motherfucking PC boot from the pen.
Cant get the boot device menu, and Ive tried all the F keys and changed the boot drive.
The mainboard is an asus p5ql pro in case someone knows how to help.
I just want to install w10 on my ssd... fuuuuuuuck.4
I once was working on my family's business during summer and was doing something on the laptop that was there (according to the owner, it was in a "good shape" - oh my god that laptop nearly gave me cancer: an old Toshiba, running W10, with half the F keys not working - specially F5. I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT F5 OH MY GOD -, and also the ➡ key (arrow keys). It was bought in a flea market and some IT guy, a friend of the owner, repaired it a bit and installed the OS because a laptop that old ran WinXP or Win Vista for sure) when suddenly it died on me.
I rebooted the thing and right before the time it should be showing the windows logo, the screen froze (on a black screen with some text) and it started to beep. Loudly. A loud continuous beep. I turned it off and on some times after that, seeing if turning it off and on did something (as it seems to work LoL) and it continued with the beeping. After a quick search I found out that that was a common problem with Toshibas that old, and that I needed to press F2 (that key worked thank god) when the black screen with the text showed up (I don't remember what was written there, it were some booting instructions, I think).
It worked. Great. Now the N key doesn't work when I press it. Greeeeeeeaaaaaat. Also it seemed that, when I opened the start menu, it would automatically write "nnnnnnnn(...)" without me pressing any key (pressing any key would make it stop though, maybe it was stuck).
Then I told the owner not to turn it off, because the laptop would start beeping and such (and I know he'd panic about it).
From then on I think it went off for good and now he's been using his own Toshiba, that runs Vista and is slow as all hell.
Moral of the story: he should have been used his crappy PC from the beginning, at least all its keys work
(Note: watching him type hurts my soul. When one is used to use both hands to type, and is fast-ish on the keyboard and uses tabs to change fields, watching someone type with only one hand every 2" or so and using the mouse to change fields hurts. So much time wasted 😭)
I really liked w10 before all of this crazy updates rolled up.
The ram and process management was ok, the presentation was slick and they got the multiple desktop feature that I liked from debian... But my pc just can't handle it anymore! There isn't a single win exclusive software that I'm attached to enough to not go back to linux.
Starting tomorrow, grub is going to greet me in every boot once again 😊7
!rant but tips
TL;DR consistent commitments form a habit.
I didn't write any code or do any major tasks past 5 days. Rest at home 2 days and went to short trip for remaining. Answered a few business calls. Made few important calls. Didn't bring my laptop with me and used my gf's one for less than 2 hours. (Majority of that 2 hours was spent on changing her W10 Japanese display language into English.)
This morning I found it hard to gain the productivity and concentration I had past few months. I thought I have lost it and got back to my old lazy 🐒 self.
Couldn't able to touch, well didn't have the mood to touch to be precise, my major tasks. I did my best to sit at my desk and finish minor small tasks that I can find the whole morning. That's the best I could do and probably the wise one I did.
After lunch time around 2pm, I gained my concentration back. I worked on my major tasks till 7pm. And now going home happy.
So my "productivity-is-a-lot-like-intercourse" analogy belief became stronger. As long as I commit to my desk and keep my work routine, I won't be losing my concentration and productivity for a long period.
Day #1 on THE other project. Nothing fancy, just setting up my dev env. Got a decent pc with all the required network permissions. And this time I got w10 [last year I was working there on w7 pc via rdp from another w7 laptop. Dont ask...]
of course no localadmin rights to set shit up. Downloaded all the installs, found someone who has admin rights to run them. I even managed to get admin powershell!
Ran all installers, enabled long paths support, env vars, tweak here, tweak there,... Installed git bash to at least have a taste of shell. Decided to try out wsl. Enabled the feature, didnt reboot right away.
Rebooted. 2xclick on ubuntu setup and I get an error claiming wsl is not ebabled. Wtf? Did I do it wrong? I see bash command is there now so I must have done it right. After some googling I found out that even though I can enable wsl, it doesnt work on my version of windows. It's too okd they say. Yeah, tx MS, that's very intuitive and user friendly!
Allright, my hopes to habe a decent sub-os died. Git bash it is :( but I miss tmux soooo much. Then I came across smth that caught my eye. Msys2 it's called. Apparently it's based on cygwin and has a pacman package manager! ´pacman -S tmux´ -- hippee-ka-yay motherfuckers! It's not the best terminal emulation, but it works quite allright and it has tmux. And netcat!
Banished to mouseclickerland still managed to find a good enough shell. Yayy!
So there it is. My first day's ups and downs, disappointments and discoveries.
If you know a better shell I could set up on w10, please, share
Having spent days wrestling to get an old phone working just enough so my mum can use it, before I waste any more time on getting another one to spend time trying to update the OS on it.. has anyone suggestions for a replacement, or coming soon replacement that fits the following requirements:
Costs less than $100 (Either new or second hand.)
Clamshell design, so screen is protected inside.
Physical QWERTY keyboard, with separate number row and backlit with large keys.
2G or 3G network capable.
Ideally bug free..
I just spent ages getting a simple thing like the ringtone to work correctly as it wouldn't let you choose the one you wanted, and the USB to PC link wasn't working, so in the end had to connect it to the internet via the wifi router, and download the working ringtone file off my own website..
I tried updating the OS, but just got errors, which I suspect is because I was using W10, and the updating only works in XP..
And I haven't got around to installing XP again on my backup PC..16
after 3 yers of Linux ( Ubuntu 16.04, 10 then Gnome on Debian ) i felt like i was missing something in life ( some asshole gave me an adove indesign file ), so i switched to Windows 10 and here's my review,
Windows is like KDE but even worse, KDE adds new features and is not intutive.
while gnome seems to have the philosophy of "Do one thing and do it correctly"
*Note - KDE is pretty good on default setup but i could never understand it, it is not intutive.
My mom who never used a computer started working with gnome in less than 5 minuted.
while W10 doesn't even support it, things that perfectly work on Gnome, partially work on KDE and do not even respond on W10.
about something as simple as the mousepad gesture scroll, you need to install a driver from OEM's website and is not available on its store.
the worst part, drivers and their shitty UI
Whindows users listen, there's a reason why people switching to linux dont want to use windows again.
Try Ubuntu, it might be a slight learning curve but i promise bash and git will make your life much simpler.
I hate the recent Ubuntu one shit and its memory managment but it has good community support.21
C++ development tool recommendations wanted for W10 OS:
Currently use MS Visual Studio, but as they make it rather hard to use offline (I may be homeless for a period of time, with no internet access.) and really expensive !
What else could I use to develop in C++ ?
Ideally something freeware..
Cheap is kinda ok, but only if it keeps working !
And, doesn't do an Intel, eg. I once paid for a copy of their C++ Compiler, but now I find my login details no longer accepted !
I paid for it damn it !6
Facebook YouTube URL previews..
Used to work, now doesn't..
Doesn't work on Firefox W10, but appears to work on Android phone..
Anyone know why ?2
FX [ Swears.. ]
AMD graphics card, headless Windows 10, latest W10 update, now only 640 x 480 resolution available !
Time to get and try:
> HDMI Dummy Plug,Headless Ghost,
> Display Emulator
Be warned !9
What are the odds Microsoft is playing behind the scenes with Wannacry attack to increase Windows 10 growth ?
It is not a secret that Satya Nadella is on a mission to meet 1 billion W10 devices by 2018.9
Probably this was asked before many times but I want your updated opinion.
1) What is the best Linux distro you used? Why?
2) Do you still use it? If not, why?
1) Debian. Because I find it very comfortable and it run in Raspberry Pi and other small computers. It has the software that I usually use and it's very light.
2) Yes but not as my main OS because the lastest version of software that I use weren't updated yet (and probably they won't update them on a short time). I had to move to W10 as my main OS.6
Hello, folk! I have strange question! =/. Why I should use Linux??? I have w10 and it's amazing. Specially all office 365. But I wan't to use linux, just don't know why, because it's hard to use them:D. So I'm looking for strong answers why to use it! Can somebody help me?? =)6
That feeling when you have to use the great working Remote connection app(android) from Microsoft because your laptop has been installing the W10 Anniversary update for the past 3 hours #MixedFeelingsAboutMS
