Today I discovered by myself that...
...in a shell...
...when entering a password (e.g. ssh)...
...and you make a typo... 🤦♂️
...you don't need to smack that backspace key like a maniac! You can just use the clear line shortcut: control+U (^U). This clears all input to the left of your cursor and this also works for passwords.26 -
I hate those fucking sites which make you login first and then redirect to their home page.
FOR FUCK'S SAKE, ITS 2017. CANT YOU BASTARDS WRITE A FEW LINES OF CODE SO THAT I AM AUTOMATICALLY REDIRECTED TO WHERE I WAS AND I NEED NOT BACKSPACE EVERY TIME I LOGIN?9 -
Mistyping one character wrong in a password and hitting backspace until I am sure I’ve deleted the entire Wikipedia.
Then starting all over again.3 -

*retypes whole password again* 😂😂6 -
Client: We want a contact form on our site that accepts files.
Me: OK. Here are the backend options (custom built, WordPress, third-party service, etc).
C: Mmm... why is it so complicated? A simple form doesn't need a backend.
Me: FFUUUUU Y DONT YOU DO IT THEN! DIDN'T KNOW BROWSERS SEND EMAIL?!
Me: *backspace*, *backspace*, *backspace*
Me: Browsers cannot send emails; you need a backend to process the form.3 -
I made a hotkey script for a colleague that made the backspace act like a left arrow. You should've seen his face when he saw the cursor moving back but not removing characters.4
-
Me : *wants to refactor a variable*
Visual Studio : Ok! Type the new name of the variable
Me : *backspace one time to remove a char*
VS : *erases ALL the name of the variable and ALL the usages of the variable, and no possibility to undo*
Me : ..... that was a dick move you know.9 -
My wife wouldn't stop asking me to help her with FB. As a joke I told her if she didn't quit, I'd delete it (Tech stuff goes over her head like a 747). Well, she kept on so I opened up the Dev tools. I started by adding just some non sense to one of the divs. She saw it pop up on screen and was like "Wait...you can really do that?" then I highlighted the body tag and hit backspace. The whole thing disappeared, it was great. She legit freaked out for a minute and begged me to fix it. I popped up the console and started typing random things. Created an array with some mumbo-jumbo, a couple of quick, meaningless functions and snuck hitting Ctrl+R in there, refreshing the page. She was so happy that Facebook worked again, that she stopped asking me how to do whatever it was7

*Hopefully devRant's compression of images doesn't ruin it.*
The center of the trackpad simply feels smooth because of the oil from my finger.
The keys are oily as well. Specifically the space bar and backspace.
I guess it's time to find a way to clean it. I probably can't save the trackpad lest I damage it.31 -
So it would seem that Chrome no longer goes back a page when I press the backspace button.
In some ways it nice, as when i'm typing anything important I won't accidentally backspace myself out of the text.
On the other hand, now I have to reteach myself that Alt + Left Arrow is the only way now4 -

@OmerFlame wanted to see more of Soviet pirate stuff, so there you go buddy. This is an example of Samizdat (“self-publishing”) — Soviet people made books of dissident literature that was forbidden in the Soviet Union.
This very book was made by my grandma, with lace fabric cover and sheets cut evenly with care and precision. Everything was typed on a typewriter, yes, the thing that renders the whole page useless with one mistype, as there is no backspace key.
This book dated 1975, the poetry of Nikolay Gumilyov.9 -
Doing coding from past 5 years.
Everyone treat me like regular working family member.
and then one day Dad stuck on some .gov site filling form.
He was not able to use backspace as developer forget to allow
backspace. So, I open console type the basic
document.getElementById().value = "";
Now, I am getting respect as a doctor get =_=3 -
Teaching a relatives boyfriend VBA so he can edit macros in excel, he has an interview next week as a junior data analyst and this a requirement. This is his laptop keyboard. Pay close attention to the placement of ctrl, shift etc. and the lack of a backspace.9

The fucking defective Caps Lock on Apple keyboards drives me fucking ballistic!
WHY would they ever think it would be a good idea to introduce a minimum press time for a key?!?
EVERY. FUCKING. TIME. I use the damn thing it inevitably fails and I have to backspace, delete the non-caps text I just entered after HITTING THE FUCKING CAPS LOCK KEY, tap the damn thing again (harder this time) and try again. It usually takes 2 or 3 tries before it actually catches. I'm sorry, but training myself to type slower is not as easy as you think!
Who the fuck thought up this nonsensical bullshit?? And who the fuck is going around accidentally tapping their caps lock key to the point where such a delay would be needed?? Do you not know where your own fingers are??
Seriously, all this does is penalize fast typists and people who actually want to USE the caps lock key for what it was meant for.
I swear to god this one little thing pisses me off SO much. And what's worse is they don't even give you an option to disable it, AND it's bloody fucking impossible to disable yourself even through the terminal.
(Also, typing this rant with so many caps was probably not as cathartic as I was going for!) 😂9 -
I FUCKING HATE VISUAL STUDIO BECAUSE IT LITERALLY THINKS I WANT TO UNDO SINCE I PRESSED THE MOTHER FUCKING BACKSPACE KEY
ITS NOT MY KEYBOARDS FAULT ITS LITERAALLY THEIR DUMBASSES NOT KNOWING HOW TO MAKE AN IDE ATA ALL
HOLY SHIT MICROSOFT LEARN HOW TO MAKE BETTER IDES OTHER THAN YOUR SHITTY IDE15 -
My classmate was doing something in word. She needed 2 papers, but had one extra between them. So she asks me how to delete it.
There is literally one character on it (the enter that didnt fit). So I told her to press backspace.
She turned around and asked me whats backspace. WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.3 -
Anyone know a good android keyboard for people who don't want any autocorrect?
Gboard has an empty top row wasting screen space if you disable suggestions. AnySoftKeyboard seems pretty slow. At the moment I'm using Chrooma, but its backspace has really annoying bugs.
What I'd really love would be a keyboard with macro functionality and where you could configure your own layout. But I guess that doesn't exist :/16 -
Fucking fuck shit monkeycocksucking gargling wtf!
I was getting some stuff done in my accounting software and it bugged me that the fields were dark and the fonts as well, thus seeing fucking shit. This was clearly a bad choice of a gtk3 dark theme, thus i switched to the fucking default adwaita, suddenly gnome session crashes.
Ok, i just log out and log back in.
Logout.... Nothing happens.... Ctrl-alt-backspace , nothing happens (and i knew i enabled that in the settings)
Ok let's do it a bit more forceful and restart the display manager... Gdm starts... I insert my credentials... It fucking crashes.
WTF!!!
I desperately try to debug it, xsession error msg'es? Nope. Something in /var/log/messages? Nope. Something, anything at all, nope sherlock nopedinope!
About to go batshit crazy, purging and reinstalling all of gnome, thibking that, what ever setting lust have broke it, it will be fixed now.
No fucking fuck desktop!!!
I lost my nerve and replaced gdm with lightdm, and i finally, after three hours wasted on my machine, i get my gnome desktop back... But in a state of mess! Extensions don't work and make it crash again, user themes? Nope, go fuck yourself with plain default.
I'm really losing my shit, business is almost non-existant, and now ly FUCKING desktop refuses to work like i want to. Everything is fucking broken to shits !!
I'm gon a go to my gf, and relax a little, at least i still have a working laptop.
Question is, for how long???
Fml4 -
THE FUCK MICROSOFT?! HOW COULD YOU FUCK UP ALT+BACKSPACE IN WORD 2016 WHAT IS THIS SHIT SUPPOSED TO DO IT MAKES NO SENSE, YOU CANNOT EVEN UNDO IT WHAT FAGGOT TESTED YOUR UI WHILE BEEING HIGH ON REDMOND DIRT. AND WHICH KIND OF MASTURBATING MONKEY IMPLEMENTED THIS SHIT.8

))| THE BEST AND WORST WAY|((
))| TO DELETE A LINE IN BASH |((
(Think you can do better? Vote
now on your phones!)
WORST: Hold backspace until satisfied
BEST: Using a pen or other pointing device capable of causing semi or permanent damage to your screen, count how many characters the line in question consists of. Write this down on a piece of paper (after all, your terminal is occupied) and using long division, or any other means, divide this number by two, rounding as you please. Press the "right arrow" key as many times as necessary to reach the end of the line. This might be 0 - if so, congratulations, you may skip this step! Once complete, refer to your piece of paper, and taking your newly calculated number, press the "left arrow" key exactly that many times. If you have a short attention span or are worried you will lose count, take a tally or use some other primitive count recording method. Once the key has been pressed the correct number of times, hold down either control key on your keyboard and take a deep breath - there's no going back now (!) - press the "k" key (you should still be holding a control key!) and take a sigh of relief. You're halfway there! If you need a break, take one. When you're ready to finish the task, hold a control key again and take another deep breath. When you are ready to complete the task (don't hold your breath too long!) press the "w" key. Congratulations!! Your line has been deleted!! Some may call you a fucking idiot for not just pressing ctrl-w at the start, but don't listen to those people! They probably delete stuff by accident all the time! Now, take a lie down, and give a moment's silence for the poor poor line you just brutally dissected and murdered.
Think you can do better? Vote now on your phones!9 -
when you're tryna create a function in C and u start typing "funct"... and then u realise it's "C" so u backspace your code of shame.
-
When I thought that I was the shit for figuring out that ctrl backspace deleted a word at a time. I was about 10.1
-
Have you ever been there, when suddenly one/more key of your keyboard stopped working ?
Yesterday, backspace key stopped working on my laptop, I had to complete my work so I started using delete key instead.
Now I'm on my PC and used delete key couple of times even though it's backspace is completely working.2 -
It just struck me that by long-pressing backspace on the virtual keyboard I can use emoji.
I feel kind of stupid right now. 😶2 -
So... Apparently you can do ctrl+backspace in steam's password field and it deletes up to the last space instead of deleting the whole password... Nice.2
-
My mouse/keyboard(+numpad) combo.
Why does Microsoft think that everyone needs a dedicated key to open the calculator?! I have one on both my keyboard (top-right) and the separate numpad. I used to press the calculator button by mistake when going for backspace - remapped it now.2 -
If you write an editor or input field, and do not respect our Ctrl+Backspace expectations, I will turkey-slap yo ass, bitch.
-
While you're typing and you remember this is not the correct password for this account but you're too lazy to backspace all that state of the art you just wrote so you just ENTER the shit out of that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
The best feeling ever is when a super long line of code is written that definitely should not be on one line, that one does not check over the logic for after writing, entered without pressing the backspace key, and it works first try.
-
ASUS thanks for putting the power off button on the top side of the backspace. I mean what could go possibly wrong you fuckin fucks!
-
First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3 -
Linux, you never fail to amaze me!
Started using Arch based Manjaro with xfce de couple of months ago. Everything was mostly fine even though I've never used anything that was based on Arch but it had a learning curve.
Couple of weeks ago I couldn't update my packages, I thought it would fix it by itself but I was wrong as you already probably know.
So yesterday I tried to manually fix it. Famous last words. After a lot of googling, trying some terminal commands - and failing, I see a warning labek on some text on the arch wiki - sudo pacman -Syi --force. I said fuck it and did it. Let's see if it works, I try to install a package, I mistype the name, press backspace - it puts a space instead of deleting?!?!?
I tried restarting, googling - nothing...
Guess I'll switch back to Debian based OSes.5 -
Why is it whenever I'm on a conf call I slide off backspace and mute myself on the stupid MBP TouchBar? Subliminal sabotage 😂1
-
I have entered the world of Linux using Manjaro and boy, how I don't regret a thing. Except for an apperant ctrl+alt+backspace command that kills everything. I don't like that.2
-
is it just me or do other guys too just randomnly type whatever keys on the keyboard and Ctrl+backspace it to type something of meaning.
kinda like just stretching my fingers for keyboard.3 -
When the only comments in your team's entire project is for code that doesn't work, as if everyone's backspace key broke simultaneously
-
I had to take my backspace key apart today to pull some hairs out of the sensor because it was ghosting and it deleted a whole source file. I'm amazed at how easy it is to repair thinkpads with minimal equipment and limited dexterityy / vision.
The retainer clip is so sturdy it feels like idiots trying to force the two halves together at the wrong place was a primary use case.1 -
that moment when your coworker doesn't know about shift+tab and uses backspace to untab blocks of code :') priceless guess i won't show let him know.
-
So I am gonna build a bashrc from scratch again.
There is just one thing messes me right now:
I don't know how to avoid the bug(?) described at the bottom.
Last time when I made one, used a line break, but whenever I went back in the command history and there is a long command (chain) it just messes up whole PS1 by getting inside, pressing backspace furiously to get the start of the command (mostly eating half of the PS1) and an up and a down to get back to command and see it properly.
Any good ideas to destroy that bug while it isn't born yet?1 -
Caps lock is an annoying key in a prominent place, so I want to remap it. Backspace or control both seem like a good option. Any experience or preferences? Of course this is very personal, but I'd like to hear from you anyways.11
-
The world can give a lot of laps, but I'll always click CTRL+Backspace in folders and file names -_-
-
The most annoying thing ever: Chrome changing the backspace button to now use Alt+Left. I get that pressing it while losing focus on an input is "terrible", but by just pressing the forward button again, the form is back in its original state! At least add an option to change it back without the need of any extensions! It is driving me absolutely nuts, because I often just press the backspace to go back, instead of going all the way to the top left of my screen and pressing the button. And it keeps messing me up!! It would take me at least a few weeks to get used to this!1
-
I hate the fact that it's not possible to find a keyboard with an ANSI left shift button and an ISO enter button. Well okay it kinda is, the JIS layout, but fuuuuuuck having a small backspace button as well.3
-
Every time I decide to remove/edit something in a written SQL statement in the CLI. The delete and backspace key are to close to the return key -.-4
-
So me and my team went to this hackathon, and we were in the last 4 hours of the event.
Me being the dumb type, I forgot that my laptop's keyboard was broken (when numlock is pressed the whole keyboard spams everything, weird).
I was typing up my last lines for the algorithm and instead of enter I end up hitting guess what, the numlock key.
I should've told you that when I hit the numlock key the keys go crazy, I cant stop it. The numlock wont shut off after i tapped on it again. The only way to fix this is by restarting the computer.
I try to backspace the crazy spam that happened (this was before restarting) the keys typed so fast never got the chance to select the stuff.
I end up restarting my laptop and turned out I selected most of my algorithm, instead of the spam, and now thats been replaced by the spam.
I couldn't ctrl z cuz I restarted and Android Studio auto saved. Had to freakin write everything from scratch and my team ended up not doing 2-3 features that were originally planned.
Rip. Gotta get the keyboard fixed ASAP.1
