That is one of the reasons I use dark themes15

Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially @Dacexi for designing the app and @sirwindfield for setting up our build infrastructure.
We plan to add more features in future. For example, searching rants, edit/delete rants or comments and most importantly, themes. Right now it has a dark theme by default.
Thank you to the users to opened issues on GitHub during development. Your feedback has helped a lot.
Whenever you find a bug or want a new feature, please open a new issue on GitHub and we will look into it.
Contributors are always welcome. I am still working on writing a article about the structure of the application, I will let you guys know when that is done. It will be easier for you to contribute when you have a bigger picture.

Not sure what Linux Desktop to use? Use this handy guide:
- GNOME: when you want no tray icons, themes that break every minor GTK release, and extensions for basic features (that are buggy.)
- KDE: pretty go-Segmentation Fault
- DWM/Awesome/i3/etc.: when you feel like the time you spent learning Vim wasn't wasteful enough
- XFCE: when you want one update per decade and poor Systemd support.
- LXQt: the biggest positive is that it doesn't use GTK.
- Cinnamon: when you like GNOME 3 but you want a different menu
- Deepin: when you want a desktop with the build quality of an HP laptop.
Aren't sure whether to use Xorg or Wayland?
- Xorg: if you want to absurdly fuck up your touchscreen, pick this one.
- Wayland: if you want to screw up most of your apps, too bad; this won't work with your proprietary drivers. If only it did.
What distro to use?
- Ubuntu: if you want to break your system with PPAs, check out this one.
- Debian: when you want Ubuntu except with more out of date packages
- Redhat: when you want Debian except with more out of date packages
- ElementaryOS: wait, someone actually made a properly designed Linux UI?
- Arch Linux: the only thing that doesn't make me sick anymore.
- Slackware: "that exists still really?"
- Gentoo: when you hate systemd more than waiting 4 days to compile Firefox on every release.
... I love Linux. I do. But it is very taxing to get things comfortable for me anymore. I feel like the Linux Desktop is in a period of flux and it's painful to be a part of right now.25
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta)
After several concepts, about 11 months of development (keep in mind that I released 20 updates for v1 in the meantime, so it wasn't a continous 11 months long development process) and a short closed beta phase, v2 is now available for everyone (as public beta)! :)
I tried to improve the app in every aspect, from finally responsive and good looking UI on Desktop version to backend performance improvements, which means that I almost coded it from scratch.
There are also of course a few new features (like "go to bottom" in rants), and more to come.
It's a very huge update, and unfortunately to move forward, improve the UI (add Fluent Design) and make it at the same level of new UWP apps, I was forced to drop the supported for these old Windows 10 builds:
- Threshold 1 (10240)
- Threshold 2 (10586)
Too many incompatiblity issues with the new UI, and for 1 person with a lot of other commitments outside this project (made for free, just for passion), it's impossible to work at 3 parallel versions of the same app.
I already done something like that during these 11 months (every single of the 20 updates for v1 needed to be implemented a second time for v2).
During the closed beta tests, thanks to the awesome testers who helped me way too much than I ever wished, I found out that there are already incompatiblity issues with Anniversary Update, which means that I will support two versions:
1) One for Creators Update and newer builds.
2) One for Anniversary Update (same features, but missing Fluent Design since it doesn't work on that OS version, and almost completly rewritten XAML styles).
For this reason v2 public beta is out now for Creators Update (and newer) as regular update, and will be out in a near future (can't say when) also for the Anniversary Update.
The users with older OS versions (problem which on PC could be solved in 1-2 days, just download updates) can download only the v1.5.9 (which probably won't be supported with new updates anymore, except for particular critcal bug fixes).
So if you have Windows 10 on PC and want to use v2 today, just be sure you have Creators Update or Fall Creators Update.
If you have Windows 10 PC with Anniversary Update, update it, or if you don't want to do that, wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have an older version on PC, update it, or enjoy v1.5.9.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, update it (if it's possible for your device), or just wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile, and because of Microsoft stupid policy, you can't update to Anniversary Update, enjoy v1.5.9, or try the "unofficial" method (registry hack) to update to a newer build.
I hope it's enough clear why not everyone can receive the update today, or at all. :P
Now I would like to thank a few people who made this possible.
As always, @dfox who is always available for help me with API implementations.
@thmnmlist, who helped me a lot during this period with really great UI suggestions (just check out his twitter, it's a really good person, friend, designer and artist: https://twitter.com/thmnmlist).
And of course everyone of the closed beta testers, that reported bugs and precious suggestions (some of them already implemented, others will arrive soon).
The order is random:
Changelog of v2.0.0-beta:
- New UI with Fluent Design and huge improvements for Desktop;
- Added native support for Fall Creators Update (Build 16299);
- Changed minimum supported version to Creators Update (Build 15063), support for Anniversary Update (Build 14393) will arrive soon;
- Added mouse support for Pull-To-Refresh;
- Added ability to change your username and email;
- Added ability to filter (by 'Day', 'Week', 'Month' and 'All') the top Rants;
- Added ability to open rant links in-app;
- Added ability to zoom GIFs (just tap on them in the Rant View);
- Added 'go to bottom' button in the Rant View (if more than 3 comments);
- Added new theme ('Total Black');
- ...complete changelog in-app and on my website (can't post it here because of the 5000 characters limit)...
What will arrive in future updates:
- 'Active Discussions' screen so you can easily find rants that have recent comments/discussions;
- Support for 'Collabs';
- Push Notifications (it was postponed and announced too many times...);
- More themes and themes options;
- and more...
If you still didn't download devRant unofficial UWP, do it now: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
If you find some bugs or you have feature suggestion, post it on the Issue Tracker on GitHub (thanks in advance for your help!): https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
I hope you will enjoy it! ;)54
Things I've changed since joining devRant:
- started coding more;
- switched to dark themes;
- switched to DuckDuckGo;
- possibly switching to Mint.9
Light themes in any code/text editor.
Can you take a look at this?
Sure no problem.

Light vs dark IDE themes
I personally prefer dark and all my coworkers use light. When they ask me to look at something, it hurts my eyes just scrolling for 5 minutes on their computer.20

Sister: (she must migrated from iOS to android) you can download these apps and then you can change like colors and themes and everything 😍😱😵
Me: Yeah off course you can...?
Sister: Oh not, oh no, you're not going to tell me you've been able to do this for years?!?
Me: Uhm... Yes...?
Not an apple hate rant, just found the convo funny!6
Since every piece of software is developed by us, I sincerely request everyone to keep dark themes as the default theme.
We should not have let the world know we especially like dark themes .. Now they're all fucking paid !!3
⚡️ devRantron Themes ⚡️
You can now customize your devRantron experience using themes.

I love how i always gotta drive east in the morning and west in the afternoon. And then people ask why i use dark themes, I WANT MY EYES TO REMAIN FUNCTIONAL DAMMIT.4
The inofficial devRant Toolbox for Firefox has been approved by Mozilla and is now available in the public Mozilla AddOn section:
It adds extended controls, themes (black, solarized, comic), dual frame layout and some more additional features.
A chrome version is also available:
Hey, it's me. It's been awhile. How have you been..? :3
For those of you who don't know/remember, I'm the lead developer of a Desktop and (to-be) Hacking Simulator Game. My project should still exist somewhere on here. I just thought I would hop on, and catch you guys up on my progress. ^~^
So far themes are a thing! You can add custom fonts, wallpapers(or just a desktop color) and set the color/opasity of everything in-game!
I have also implimented a modding API. It's under-documented, but it works very well! You can add apps, commands, or even redesign the entire interface using it. It executes modded functions on specific events, so you could really have it do anything.
As of yesterday, there is also a simulated FileSystem. You can navigate it using in-game terminal commands, and you can create and remove directories.
(in-game screenshots are also a thing, you can even set a timer - ps: this is a 100% mod! As are all apps and commands in the current unreleased version. PM me on Telegram @TheCyaniteproject to get a copy~)27
Dark themes are overrated. I've switched to light themes everywhere with a lower brightness setting and I don't regret.26
So I have been freelancing as web developer for 5 years. I was also playing basketball professionally so I was only working part-time, building websites here and there, small android apps to learn the job and I was also reading a lot to challenge my brain.
When I stopped playing basketball about a year ago, I thought I would really enjoy coding full time so I pursued a job.
With no formal education and just a basketball background on paper, in the collapsed Greek economy, as you may assume chances of landing a job are minimal.
After about 40 resumes sent I only got an internship. It was a 4 month, part-time, no pay deal, and then the company would decide if they would like to hire me later.
The company had 4 employees and they are one of the largest software distribution businesses in my area. They resell SaaS bought from a third company, bundled with installation support, initial configuration, hardware support, whatever a client may need.
I was the only one with any ability to code whatsoever. The other people were working mostly on customer support with the occasional hardware repair.
After the 4 month period they owner (small company, owner was also manager and other roles) told me that they are very happy with my work and would like to keep me part-time with minimum pay.
Just to give you and idea if the amounts of money involved, in Greece, after taxes, my salary was 240euros per month. And the average cost of surviving (rent, cheapest food possible, no expenses on anything but super basics) is about 600euros.
I told him I needed more to live and he told me ok, we will reevaluate a few months later, at the end of May 2017.
I just accepted it without having many options. The company after all was charging clients 30euros per hour for my projects so I kept thinking that if I worked a lot and delivered consistently I would get a full time job and decent money.
And I delivered. In the following months I made a Magento extension, some WordPress themes, a C# application to extract data from the client's ERP and import it to a third application, a click to call application to use Asterisk to originate calls from the client's ERP, a web application to manage a restaurant's menu and many more small projects. Whatever they asked, I delivered.
On time, version controlled, heavily documented solutions (my C# ones are not exactly masterpieces but it was my first time with the language and windows).
So when May ended I was pretty excited to hear they wanted to keep me full time. I worked hard for it, I was serious, professional, I tried a lot to learn things so I can deliver, and the company recognized that. YAY.
So the time comes to talk money. The offer was 480euros per month. Double my part-time pay, minimum wage. I asked for about 700. Manager said it's hard but I will see what I can do. So we agreed to keep the deal for June while they are working on a better offer.
During the first half of June I finished my last project, put all my work on a nice folder with a nice readme on every project's directory, with their version control and everything.
The offer never improved, so I said no deal, and as of today, I am jobless.
I am stressed as fuck and excited as fuck at the same time.
I will do my best to survive in the shitstorm that is called Greece.
Bring it on.9
Update on my previous rants: finally got it working! after spending 2 days compiling the kernel and trying to fix some issues, I just reinstalled my laptop with a fresh antergos image, installed the kernel and both the speaker and headphones work just fine! no distortion, no weird chrome video speed ups, just works - it was probably just something I had installed ages ago to make external usb sound work.
I also used this opportunity to apply the missing grub theme and found this: https://gnome-look.org/content/... it's perfect with almost any custom background too.
Why is this a rant? well some asshat at gnome decided to remove the "global dark theme" option from tweaks, so now thousands of themes are broken if you want the dark theme, since the developers now have to offer the dark theme seperately, well numix-frost has had this reported since the 7th may and no response since, the hack to make it work is to replace the gtk.css with the dark equivalent gtk-dark.css for now..33
Dear software companies,
As much as I appreciate all the dark themes being used lately either as default, or added as options (Youtube, Discord, Postman, Windows Explorer, etc)... you guys still suck at theming.
A #000 background with #fff font is almost as bad as the reverse. Too much contrast! Then there are some apps which use grayish tones, others brown/orange stuff... pretty ugly if you use it all next to each other.
So how about just adding good theming support? Or even better: what about a global theming standard, a styling preference, a system wide json file which defines UI elements for all apps?5
Have guys ever thought that all te devs are vampires...
reason 1: Loves Darkness (dark theme)
reason 2: Most active during the night
reason 3: If the dev finds a capable victim then they can make them fellow dev.25
Wtf y'all see shitposting and then you decide to continuously upvote it.
Look retards. Part of being a Computer Scientist, or whatever shit branch you are part in this vast field...is detecting patterns....if you see some dickwad shitposting the same shit over and over or using fucking retarded ass themes, or some jase shit then downvote the shit out of it.
Someone can make his theme to be just posting ascii penises and you retards would upvote that shit to oblivion.
Stupid ass community.
"THeN lEave" <--- i was prob here before you dickhead....go suck on cock somewhere else.
Damn y'all are fucking idiotic...this what happens when we make retards believe they can be engineers61
Friends their dream world: Sun, beach, cool drinks, nice car.
My dream world: No merge conflicts, one standard for all platforms, dark themes for everything.
Hating WordPress is cool these days, but:
1) Shitloads of themes for clients to choose from (I'm not good with designing and where I live you are more likely to meet a unicorn than a front-end developer that can code).
2) Non technical people can understand it's admin interface without lots of explaining.
3) Huge community makes it extremely easy to find answers even when looking for pretty specific stuff.
For me it's a valid option when making something simple.18
You'd think that with OLED screens becoming the norm for smartphones people would start offering dark themes in their apps to save a bit of battery and prevent burn-ins, but NOPE there comes Google with their material design and everything is suddenly brighter than the sun, especially YouTube where 3/4th of the screen is static most of the time.
Thank God you can still mod things.8
So, taking an entry course for Java.
Also, you people have corrupted me... Now I have switched everything to dark-themes.12
So, a friend of mine just called me and asked what is it that I do in programming, and if I knew Java, because her stepfather owns a company, and they're currently hiring. Since she's not a tech person, I answered "basically, websites", but the stepfather was asking something else in the background, and she couldn't understand what the heck he was saying, so she put me on the phone with him.
And then, he asks me this wonderful question:
"And programming languages... ?", as in "do you know any?"
... I was like... Wut?...
I mean, I see where he's coming from. He probably meant compiled languages or something, but still... I felt like screaming at him "WEB DEVELOPERS ARE REAL PROGRAMMERS AND DESERVE SOME LOVE TOO YOU KNOW?! 😢"
I decided to go with a "nah, not compiled languages, no..."19
I don't know what Google's design team has taken for drugs lately, but I want some!!
First, replacement of the blobs into this trash that they call emoji nowadays. 10-20 years ago we called it the crap stickers from MSN.
Next, Android Pie would look like iOS, but in the most grotesque way possible.
And now it's creeping into the apps.. Google Play, YouTube, Messaging, …
It all looks so.. white, and round, and childish. What happened to sharp corners, using all the screen real estate, and.. those colors?! God I can't stand how white the Google apps are starting to look. But I know the solution. I'll accuse Google of being RACIST!! Because black people would be so offended by the lack of dark themes. GOOGLE, YOU PATRIARCHIC, NON-INCLUSIVE, RACISTIC A-HOLES!!! CHANGE YOUR COLORS NOW!!!
I can see how that could actually work nowadays 🙃10
So... I've seen my dad talking a lot about quantum computers, and it's getting quite embarrassing to be there when he talks about them. He doesn't understand shit about them, except that they somehow use quantum mechanics for something.
Last week my uncle from Spain visited us. He's a Cristian pastor, and a cool guy, so they always talk about god and similar themes. We gathered the family to have a dinner with my uncle as he only was going to be one day with us. This is how part of the dinner went by:
" so, <Uncle's name>, have you heard about quantum computers?"
me thinking:*Oh my God. Please not again... *
"The nasa, the US government and all kinds of powerful entities are getting the quantum computer."
He always talks about THE quantum computer as if it was just one big machine.
"They have found that multiple universes exist through it. If this is what they are telling us, imagine how far they've gone. Remember that technology is always 8 years ahead of actual public technology."
Me:*please dad, stop. Who the fuck is made that claim and how many fucking years ago?*
"Did you know that many people remember that Mandela died in prison, while in the oficial version, he died after it? They must be messing with multiple universes, or multiple timelines are getting intertwined."
Me: *please, not the mandela effect again*
Then my dad procceded to talk about multiverses and how THE quantum computer was the future and about some parts of the Bible that supported it. Bizarre, I know.
When we are alone, I always try to tell him how things actually work but he always twists my claims to support his. Last time I told him that the mandela effect was perfectly explainable by psychological phenomena around forgotten memories. But this is going to far... Fuck the guys that made zeitgeist. Fuck Alex Jones. Fuck random youtube conspiracy channels. They make technology look like fucking magic for muggles.10
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta7)
After "Active Discussions" (implemented in v2.0.0-beta5), it was time to implement the last missing app section, "Collabs".
This is the biggest update since the start of the public beta, over 100 changes (new features, improvements, fixes).
- Support for Collabs
- Notifs Tabs
- & more... read the entire changelog here: https://jakubsteplowski.com/en/...
Microsoft Store: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
I'm really happy to announce that the unofficial UWP client has now 100% of the features available on the official Android and iOS apps (if we don't count Push Notifs 😝 but they will arrive soon too).
It took several months of hard work, but I made it... it's here, it reached the level I wanted to reach since the beginning of this project (May 2016) (if we don't count Push Notifs).
I did it a lot of times, but I think they deserve it everytime, I would like to thank all the people who made this possible, all the active users, who opened issues, suggested features, or just used my app and had fun, posted positives (and negatives, motherfuckers, just kidding, maybe) reviews on Microsoft Store etc.
The entire community who made me want to do this project.
You're amazing guys!
Of course this is not the end of this project, I want to bring the app out of the beta and support it until I will be able to do it, releasing updates almost simultaneously with @dfox and @trogus.
Planned to be done:
- Support for Anniversary Update
- Push Notifs
- Custom Themes
- Close the 15+ issues (features requests, fixes) on the issue tracker on GitHub
- Ranti by @Alice: Your devRant Assistant <- I really hope it will become a thing :)
- Your future suggestions -> post them here: https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
Thanks for the attention,
Found an actual usage for light themes: bright sunny days when you have the opportunity to work outside. Unfortunately however, this much exposure to sunlight hurts the developer4
Once i met a cool guy on a gamejam, we figured out that we both prefer tabs, yay, but then i saw it... He uses Light Themes in his ide =( ok but we can b friends8
Person 1 : Dude you should try using GNU/Linux it's the best OS.
Person 2: Why?
Person 1: Umm well it doesn't get viruses, kinda
Person: 2: Can it play games?
Person 1: Steam sorta works. There's wine, and RetroArch is available even though it runs like shit
Person 2: Hm, what about productivity?
Person 1: Are you a programmer?
Person 2: Not really
Person 1: Oof. W-Well you can kinda do word processing... Forget about video editing, umm.. GIMP and Krita are there available.. Um, web apps?
Person 2: Is it updated regularly?
Person 1: Oooh yeah. Many of them are so bleeding-edge that they end up running untested software, breaking/screwing up the entire distro at times. Not that the software is good anyway.
Person 2: Is it customizable?
Person 1: You'll be customizing your distro with the same shitty software everyone else does. And theming? If you hate flat design, you're fucked. Most themes that have a bit of techy masculinity to them end up not working or have a hellish setup process.
Person 2: Well how do I try it out?
Person 1: *Rambles on for 20 minutes about the one billion distros there are when really the only thing important is the package manager & repos*
Person 2: Sounds like Linux is kinda shit
Person 1: HEY FUCK YOU ITS THE BEST OS ITS BETTER THAN WINDOWS MAK ALL OF THEM!11137
Finally made my laptop a dedicated linux machine, time to start working on a theme then to start on OS development until Gamemaker comes to linux! :-P16
Me: I'm not upgrading my MacOS beyond Yosemite, I am happy with my custom themes and plugins.
Manager: Guess what? You get to integrate ApplePay on our store's site. Don't forget it only works Sierra.

TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER RANT FIRST!
SYNTAX THEME SELECTION
In this rant you can set your theme for the syntax highlighter!
Just ++ the comment with your preferred theme.
The bot checks for the "<user> ++'d your comment!" notification and stores your selection!
(When you ++ multiple themes, your theme will be the one you ++'d the last)
Then, next time you request a syntax highlighting (see other rant on how to do that), that theme will be used!
Please don't post any comments here if possible!!!
(You can post comments and ask questions in the other rant)
Feel free to ++ this rant tho ;D
Have fun and thank you for using this bot!28
Wordpress does not suck. If you know how to work it.
Past period I saw so many rants on WP. My rant is that it is not 100% WP fault. Yes there are seriously structural problems in WP but that does not mean you cannot create top-notch websites.
At my work we create those top-notch WP sites. Blazing fast and manageable. Seriously we got a customer request to make the site slower because it loaded pages to fast (ea; you hardly could see you switched pages).
- We ONLY use a strict set of plugins that we think are stable, useful.
- We have everything in composer (and our own Satis) for plugins.
- We use custom themes & classes. Our code is MVC with Twig.
- In our track history we have 0 hacked websites for the past 2 years.
- Everything runs stable 24/7
- We have OTAP (testing, acceptance & production environments)
- We patch really fast
These are sites going from $15k++ and we know our shit.
Don't hate on WP if you have no clue what you are doing yourself.
That is my rant.23
when you're a programmer surrounded by designer friends, it feels frustrating sometimes.
people appreciate what they do more because they can clearly see the end product: beautifully designed ui, animated splash screens, clean colorful themes. even though it probably does squat other than to print statements.
then they look at your overly simple design and cant see the beautiful underlying code within.
I didnt understnd why people hated white themes because the are too bright, not untill I looked out of the window today and my eyes were bleeding because the snow made everything as bright as if I would stare into the sun!2
Some people say they use dark themes because it looks cool, but we all know it's for when you're up late programming and don't want your eyes shot to pieces.13
This happened like 6-7 years ago when I used to do some logo and Web theme designs as a side job. There was this motel owner client who wanted me to make a website for him . he didn't give me much to go on except some themes he liked and some pictures of the motel. I finished the website on time but of course he didn't like it, he told me that he wanted it to be bluer(?). So I played with the colors a bit and showed it to him a couple days later, but now he didn't like the font that I used he wanted a font that stand out, like those Gotik ones; I politely told him it would not look professional when he refused I told him it would look like a teenage Lamer at Tumblr. After that he settled down for a less idiotic font. I finished the final cuts the next day and went to the motel to setup the website and show him how to use it. After a good hour of teaching him in the ways of the Internet I told him I needed my payment now. But the guy only wanted to pay half of what we agreed upon because I delivered it late and also didn't do his requests. I reminded him, that this is my job I worked hard for this. That he owed me what he promised. His counter argument was That all I do is press some buttons on a keyboard and that I don't know what working hard really means. That was the last drop. You see I usually have somewhat good pr skills but I can only tolerate limited amount of bulls*** at a time. So I deleted the www folder from filezilla and told him to go F*** himself and left. Never been a freelancer ever since2

"Hello, this is [Graphic designer] from the company who created the image with text on it. I do not understand why you can't put display:none on your <h1> tag. Also, being a web company, we are used to making themes and my solution of display:none will work. It's pityful to work on a design only to have it stripped out from most of its concept. If you can't do that, do tell me what resolution you need."
My first reaction:
"Dear [Graphic designer], I am managing our corporate identity, our backend and frontend codebase, I am a graphic designer myself, and am also SEO-aware. For at least 8 reasons (redacted, 'cuse too long), I will need an image without text. As told to my colleagues, I need a 72/96 DPI 16:9 ratio image, 1920x1080 is a good start but may be bigger. Also, looking at the image, it'll have to be in JPG, at 100% quality, exported for the web. Our database software will optimize the image by itself."
Reasons are about SEO issues, responsiveness issues, CMS tools issues, backend and frontend issues.
Instead, I sent following email "We can't. Image please."
I mean seriously. A bit of clarity for you:
In my company, nobody has the slightest idea what I do. They don't understand how a computer works (we all know it works by magic, right?). So of course, when one thinks what we don't know, we know it better than the one who knows, my colleague thought our CMS was like a word document, and began telling me how I should display her bible-length text-infected image, by using some inline css styling display:none.
I tell her "nope, because of my 8 reasons". She transmits that to the agency who's done the visual, now I have this [Graphic designer] not understanding that there are other CMSs than Wordpress on the web, and she tells me, me being one of the most aware on this CMS we have, how I should optimize my site?
Fucking shit, she connects on our CMS for 1 second and she'll get cancer since it's so bad. I'm in the process of planning a whole new rewrite so the website is well designed (currently I am modifying a base theme made by an incompetent designer). I know the system by heart and I know what you can, or can't do.
Now I just received an answer: "so it's only a pure technical problem". NO, OUR WEBSITE WAS CODED BY A CHIMPANZEE WHO THOUGHT WEB DEV WAS AS EASY AS WRITING "HELLO WORLD" ON A SHITTY CMS THAT FORCES DEV USERS TO USE A FUCKING CUM-WHITE-THEMED EDITOR TO EDIT THE WHOLE SITE!!!
I can't just sneeze and "oh look, it's working!"2
I'd like to apologise for devRantron updates being a bit slow, both me and tahnik are still in school so we don't have much time right now.
We'll be working on implementing themes during the Christmas break and we'll also try to squash some bugs.
Hope you understand 🙂
PS. Thanks for the awesome support and feedback were getting ♥️6

Use dark themes
Now repeat after me, "I am a programmer...."5
I like dark themes but I really don't like it when the black of the desktop theme is clashing with a different shade of black in the program2
Fuck wordpress themes without documentation.
(Fuck wordpress alltogether but hey when it's mandatory it's mandatory)6
I have gotten so used to code with dark themes (I even made Devrant from standard light to dark theme) that everytime i see someone with a light themed text editor, my eyes cry a bit.8
Would you rather only be able to use Internet Explorer for the rest of your life or only use Light themes also for the rest of your life?16
How the fuck is Wordpress taking up 28% of the Internet?
Okay so, I installed it in a DO droplet. ALL I was expecting was an easy yet customizable platform with some themes that work. THATS IT! But I couldn't even get that.
Most themes are fucking horrible and if you're a Wordpress theme dev you should be embarrassed of your work. Every fucking theme there is freemium, yet advertised as free on every single fucking site on the Internet so you can't even find actually free ones. Free themes don't fucking exist unless you get them from some outdated GitHub repo in which the theme will look like horseshit anyway.
I get the work that goes into these themes, but you mean to tell me out of the 7 billion people on this planet, not 1 FUCKING HUMAN made a "free" wordpress theme that's actually usable? If you get a freemium theme, you can't do jack shit with it. It either has a ton of weird buttons and settings that are vague and annoying trying to figure out, or it has no customization at all.
What a load of bullfuck. Idk if Drupal has the same issues (because I haven't tried it yet) but if it does then someone PLEASE actually put this thing called "effort" into your CMS, ruthlessly advertise the fuck out of it and hopefully crush wordpress like the bug it is.13
It's my second rant about Windows here in two days, but here we go:
Windows used to be a cool OS (and in part it still is). Yes, it's made for the end user, not power users, yes it has many flaws. But it was my gateway to computers and programming. I have fond memories of my first PC, playing around with the old win98 themes (my favorite was the baseball one!).
However, I am very disappointed now. I just had to basically force Windows 10 to stop hogging my bandwidth. It was an actual battle, with the OS simply (I kid you not) running update and other services EVEN AFTER I SPECIFICALLY DISABLED THEM. I just saw the Windows update service running, while its status was disabled. It's absurd.
Sorry Windows, but that's not what I want. I want to choose what happens on my own OS. Linux gives me exactly that, why can't you?11
Been wearing sunglasses to the office for a few months now because I'm sick of bright screens, light themes of co-workers, the daylight outside that shines through the windows (I moved to another desk further away from the windows), the ceiling lights that are always on (even when there's daylight from outside, thanks boss) and people expecting me to have my eyes open in meetings when there's nothing to look at so now I can just close them and switch to "standby" while I'm still listening.
I am a devampire.7
Anyone else kinda totally sick of the "AAA my eyes" white theme shit? I mean, I love dark themes as much as the next guy but this is getting onto semicolon joke level...7
My friend a backend dev who manages a little UI by using bootstrap themes. One Saturday he calls me up says "Dude, I need your help, we had a demo and the CEO decides to demo the project to prospective people on Internet Explorer. It looked alright on Chrome but the whole UI has gone haywire on IE. Need your help asap. Join me on screen share". I checkout his HTML code and find a file where the link tag is inside the body tag. I ask him to move that into head tag as in wherever the master template is, I tell him to change the doctype, add responsive meta tags, and even after all these, it just doesn't render bootstraps media queries. After beating my head for around 15mins, I see a drop-down caret in IE's inspector with 7 besides it, someone had set the compatibility mode to IE7. Why in the world would someone set an IE11 to IE7.
My friend heaved a sigh of relief and walked to his boss to show that he isn't a bad developer, his boss is just a bad user.5
The main reason I want to be an app developer is so that I can enable dark themes by default. That way people can see for themselves and the dark side can take over!4
Google's slogan is (was?) "don't be evil" but all of their new MD apps are blindingly white light themes!
Retinas?, no don't need them. Thanks Google.20
I just found this `Cyberpunk` VS Code theme and I'm a fan 🤩
Me at the start of making first Wordpress theme: "I don't know why people complain about this?! It's great fun and easy!"
Me a week into developing said WordPress theme: "Damn it, they were right."1
The new Miui 10 is truly beautiful, sadly almost all dark themes now break something though, so hope somebody will come up with a proper one asap24
Why the hate for light theme?
The whole freaking Internet is using light themes. Switching between dark and bright is tiring for the eyes. Simple as that.11
It wasn't me in the interview and it wasn't really an interview at all but here we go. I worked for a pretty shit company this past summer as a paid internship and while I was there they fired a Dev because he complained about how he didn't get a BMW i8 and they had to hire new help. So instead of doing a regular interview what they did was call people in and just have them work. Like no joke from 7-4pm they just did the job the didn't get yet. They also expected them to know how to work in there system. It was a WordPress development company and they had custom plugins and themes that they just expected people to know.
Also they said they would pay them for their work but I don't think they did, there were maybe 8 different people over a week who probably just worked for free.1
Hmmmmmm i just got offered a position for a php developer........but something that was not listed in the original application was that it is expected of one to work with wordpress. My wordpress experience is limited to creating simple themes.
I don't like cms systems also. But the position pays really good.
What to do what to do hmmm10
4th grade. My parents left for the night and got a babysitter for me and my younger siblings. The babysitter showed me a game she likes in IE. You could make an account, raise a digital pet, a "neopet," play flash games for points to buy items from other users who listed them in their own stores that had custom css/html, including bg music. This was the first time I had really witnessed what the web could look like. Animated tiled gif bgs really amazed me so I took to google with which I discovered sites where one could copy css and html snippets for themes. I stored each new html tag I discovered via w3cschools.com in a powerpoint where the snippets I found were pasted somewhere randomly in the ppt. From there I learned html, CSS, and a billion other things. To date I've made websites, apps with several langs in win/Linux/osx/Android (but not ios yet). I've managed servers, and databases , and DNS records. I've in even ran website with 100k requests a day.3
So, company I work at, is on desperate need of PHP developers, who can work in WordPress and Magneto. Company announced vacancy.
Only 20 CVs were dropped 4 days before from today. So company called all of them for interview and I was one of the interviewer. Most of applicants told me that they know Laravel but not WordPress.
I was like fine. Maybe they can work on WordPress too. But I was wrong. Here are some funny interviews:
Me: how many types of inheritance does PHP support?
Applicant 1: 7. Single, multiple, etc..
Me: Do you know difference between interface and abstract class?
Applicant 2: (he just said some gibberish)
Me: why do u prefer Laravel to WordPress?
Applicant 3: because by default Laravel support payment gateway, so we can create e commerce application faster. WordPress doesn't support payment gateway.
Me: how many WordPress site you have worked on?
Applicant 4: I have 4 themes in WordPress.org
Me: Do you create all of them by yourself?
Applicant 4: Yes
Me: Do u know difference between require and include?
Applicant 4: No
Me: Do u know difference between query_posts and WP_Query?
Applicant 4: No
VS Code looks amazing with dark themes and vs code file icons. Using the theme by Kary Foundation and it is awesome.11
Do you guys have a idea how I can call my new snippet manager application? The application allows you to save code and URLs to view Inside of the application. Also the application is highly customizable supporting 42 coding Languages and over 42 Themes. Currently its named: "SNIPR". But i would like a Name thats not directly connected to the application and what it does. Maybe you guys have some ideas? Because im not that creative😀😀👌
This is a example of the main ui using the dark theme30
It's been so long without an update on my little encryption project so...
We accomplished the following:
- big fixes and bug fixes
- drag and drop in files and folders
- screwed over many times
... And finally ...
- THEME SUPPORT!! WUHUUU
(Look attached screenshot)
Currently I just implemented two themes but a theme explorer will follow.
I'll create 3 themes for this project, normal, dark and Alice themed.
Stay tuned ✌️5
I actually like light themes. Especially on bright days, they're a life saver, but... what the fuck.
I hear white noise when I look at it.2
Rant r = new Rant(Rant.TEAM_PROBLEM);
Three months ago, a senior, one year older than me, decided to join me in doing startups. He said he's good at finance stuff (his parents are fund managers), and he is interested in startups just like I am. He treated me very nicely, so I gladly accepted him.
I'm currently working on many projects, and some of them won me quite a few awards, most notably on the national competition. I also got invited into startup incubator programs, met some awesome people and offered free scholarships at universities in my country.
He frankly said he joined because he wanted to learn about startups and have those "privileges" too, and I'm cool with that.
Anyway, the problem is that I'm the one doing all the work. He's really nice, doesn't claim anything whatsoever, but the thing is he doesn't have any skills whatsoever except soft skills like communicating. So, I'm horribly tired from working alone.
My tasks mostly involves full-stack development, such as planning the specs, designing and developing frontend for mobile apps and progressive webapps, developing microservices for the backend, up to deploying and maintaining the servers. It's a lot of work for a single person to handle in such a short timeframe.
Not only that, but I'm also the one handling the business/marketing part, albeit I'm still learning. From doing paperworks, pitches, business models, up to creating advertising materials for the product.
I'm obviously not the smart ones like the people out there, but I keep focusing on improving my skills.
So, he said he could help me, and I let him try. What did you think he did?
He made pitch decks using default fucking PowerPoint themes, shooted a demo video with his phone cam in 320p potato resolution and expect me to "add some effects", gives me loads of requirements when all we needed was a simple feature, copying and pasting prior documents in my paperworks which doesn't make any fucking sense at all, and quite a lot more.
Also, he said I should stay in the developer zone only while he maintains the business, whilist he obviously can't do much in the business part either. Seriously...?
I'm okay with his lack of experience, considering he's nice and all, unlike the other business guys I've met in the previous rants. However, I keep questioning myself why he is here in the first place when I'm the one doing everything anyway.
What should I do? Maybe just keep him and recruit more experienced people to join us, as he's not that much of a burden? What do you devRanters think?
Thanks for reading, fellow devRanters! 😀8
For those of you wanting dark themes for sites without them, look into the Stylish FF/Chrome extension. You can install themes for sites on it where it would otherwise require manual customisation.
I've currently got dark themes for Facebook, WhatsApp Web and Reddit.6
If you're using the adwaita-dark gtk theme, you may have noticed that the text entry fields on lots and lots of sites make your text almost impossible to read, using firefox. You can fix that by creating/editing the, "widget.content.gtk-theme-override" key(in about:config), setting it to "Adwaita" and restarting firefox.5
I just wanted to quickly install a little Ubuntu on my notebook for some testing.
And here I am hours later installing unity themes.
I think I could get used to this.7
Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.
Building on https://devrant.com/rants/1654019/...
It's coming along nicely, I've been working on different themes and I'm still making the tree more natural.
Next is to make the number of branches each time more random, and then I'll maybe add leaves. I might even add a day/night cycle, but we'll see once the code is further along and the automatic background updater is made.4
So saw that google released 'official' themes for chrome and thought fuck it, lets try it out...
Chrome will only use CSD if you use the default fucking GTK+ theme else it will revert to chromes custom icons...
Just how fucking lazy do you have to be for this to still be a thing?!2
Does anyone know about HTML alternative stylesheets?
(Users can pick different css files)
After 3 years of web dev I just found out about this. It's awesome!5
if false? if false what? (false is just not defined, but this is the sort of shit I come across in the twig-theme-saas world, makes me angry)5
WHAT THE FUCK???? UX level: 9000
I do like dark themes in many places. But IMO this is just too much
And the font..? Is this registration for witch-hunt or satanists' party?18
Messing up my XFCE themes to make them look flat and simple (TBH I kinda like the Windows 10 look, and feel like most GNU/Linux themes have stopped somewhere in the 2010's.6
Finally got a new job! Outta here!
Just got out of a meeting that I drove half an hour for (that could easily have been a damn phone call), for hand off stuff with the agency my company has hired to replace me.
I've talked to their senior dev a few times in the past, and he always struck me as an arrogant asshole. I assumed this meant that he had some level of competence to justify this attitude, but evidently not. Turns out he and his employees are a bunch of fucking idiots who don't even know how to use the command line, or anything but a cms with stock themes.
I'm taking all of the specific public stuff I've done for my employer off my resume as soon as I get back, because these dudes are going to fuck it up worse than a soup sandwich.
What could be reasonable CMS alternative to Wordpress today?
- easy as possible to end user (beautiful and intuitive admin, themes, etc.)
- friendly to developer (well documented, no spaghetti, lightweight, scalable)
- usable (frontend do not solely rely on js)
- open source10
I use WordPress for my clients. No prob there. I hate it when I use someone else's paid theme and I have to beat my head against the CSS because they've used a lot of #id and !Important in the main css file.
Makes a child theme almost useless.1
So, I have been jumping back and forth between linux and windows for some time now. I really want to start using linux more but I end up coming back to windows.
Today, I reinstalled ubuntu and decided to setup development environment there. But the problem was reinstalling all the packages, themes and applying all the settings of my code editor in that operating system agian.
So, I found a solution to this after poking around. Sincee I couldn't find any video tutorial, I decided to make one myself aboutt it.
So, following is my very first screencast showing how to sync all of your sublime text packages, themes and user settings across different machines. Feel free to leave comments :) :
Started new job almost two moths ago..
For almost 3 years I was developing custom themes, plugins, and widget for WordPress using PHP, jQuery/AJAX, and MySQL.
The new company that hired me brought me on as a backend developer to help rebuild their custom PHP Framework, and other web based software/products as their moving toward Google Cloud Platform.
When I started, MVC and OOP was new to me... took a couple weeks to get the hang of things, and understand their system.
Just when I was getting comfortable, I had a task assigned to me that was all NodeJS...
Had a 30 check-in the week I started the Node task, and was feeling pretty beat down because it was all new to me and I wasn’t making a lot of progress, and still not comfortable with Promises yet, and some other ES6 features but finding my way around slowly but surely.
Manager reassured me that I wasn’t going to be fired and it wasn’t unique to myself. Very encouraging to hear, but I’m my own worst critic so it’s frustrating not being able to make progress like I would with PHP projects.
Fast forward to this week, I started to review another task for a feed and found it’s all Ruby! Another language I have no familiarity with... and started to question if I’ll every get the hang of all these languages and be a solid team member...
Not only do I have to get a grasp on NodeJS and Ruby now, but then I’ll also have to get familiar with GCP and whatever else comes along with it...
Oh and I’m using Linux now instead of Windows/ OSX... so there’s that too.. plus the other command line tools the company built, and uses..
I was comfortable developing in PHP and know I needed to take a step and accept this job to move my career forward but it seems like I’m always behind the 8 ball...
Some days I wonder if it was worth staying a Wordpress developer and just focused on learning ReactJS and stay more Front-end than Backend..
I enjoy working with talented people but I don’t like being the low man on the totem pole knowing I don’t have the experience yet.
Does it feel like this for all devs?!?!14
So I agree with some arguments against using dark themes but only because they all seem to be about white text on black, but I would never use that as a dark theme... (who would?) Dark shades are where it's at! Take devRant itself as an example.
I had a hockey accident where the hockey stick hook caught me in the eye and among many other things, tore my iris to the point that the doctors couldn't stitch it (something about cutting being reparable but tearing not :/ )
Luckily with some exercises, it healed a lot in its own but still let's in about double the light it should. Since then, black on white for more than a few hours will, without fail, give me a migraine. But then so would white on black, too much light allowed in means that white on black give an almost blurry effect on the characters. Hence, colour shades for the win :D
Just my 2 cents ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1
My friend works for my favorite company Apple, his boss ranted Apple is about giving options.
I figured out some missing options in my iPhone X
Need to listen music: sorry can't plug in a headphone we removed that option 😉
Other phones have option to unlock through face or finger print (oops we removed one option)
No option to take a photo in 16:9 aspect ratio (4:3 only)
No option to change themes or layout to personalize your phone
Any positive thoughts on this option statement? If I missed some option examples 😅11
Guys , I have been asked to fucking merge two bootstrap themes together. Why does my lead think that's a good idea ? I mean they are complete themes for a reason and both have their own custom css. I have been busting my ass for the last two days to make it work.I fucking hate css now.4
So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)
Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)
Any feedback is appreciated as I'm still just developing it :)14
Why do most web sites have so bright design? Aaarghgh, my eyes!
Anyone who dislike screeching default color themes? Black, red, blue, on full white?
Then I guess your editor and terminal are on low contrast light grey on dark grey, or something like that, right? Maybe even your window manager?
If your setup looks like this and the web is what hurts your eyes, try Dark Reader for Chrome or Firefox. I've tried several such plug-ins in the past, but this one is amazing.
I just got a job as a "Web designer", but I've quickly learned that my job duties involve installing theme forest themes for clients and sticking to the template. I'm not allowed to write my own code. ever. uuuuuuuuggggghhhhhh5
I was coding some simple themes for a management system I'm currently working on my job, then I remembered about @Alice and I thought to myself "Fuck it, why not?" and added a subtle pink theme3
I'm really curious about how many people use the light and black theme in devRant (I'll call the default dark one dark, the pro one black)
I'm a dark theme user (it's kinda unique to devRant)
My guess is 5% Light, 85% Dark, 10% Black Theme.15
FUCK MICROSOFT!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!?!?!?!? WHY IS THIS EVEN A THING!?!?!?!?
WHYYYYYY HAVE WE GOT A FUCKING DARK THEME IF WHEN I ADD ANNOTATIONS IN SSIS IT'S HARDCODED COLOURS.
No...seriously...not only am i doing this bullshit waste of time redundant annotations for some bullshit client that thinks they know shit but when I use the dark theme like a normal person, if you go back to a normal theme, all annotations in white.
Just finished like 30 packages on this slow ass remote connection and now all these backward ass people that use light themes (like everyone but me) can't see anything written.
Fuck you Microsoft!!!!! Soooooo many fucks for you right now....don't even know how to express the fucks.4
How can people work with those surface of sun level bright white IDE themes? Like, do you wear your sunglasses at home too?2
just a note to everyone selling web based software, like plugins or themes: check github. someone who bought your stuff might have put it in a public repository, enabling everyone to get your product for free.1
We all love dark themes right?
Anymore uses ES explorer for Android?
Hey the dark team is back... Just install this bullshit app about car parts that I'll never use and you can change to the dark theme7
I'm kind of triggered by all these social media posters and SEO optimizers and "wordpress developers", it's one of the oldest internet scam "jobs" in my eyes where anyone can do what they are doing, yet somehow they are getting paid absurd amounts of money for who knows what. I'm just triggered by how much these people get away with. And stupid ass "companies" that I see all over first google results whose pricing starts from 5k and they're resumes are stock unmodified fucking wordpress themes that cost 39-59 bucks. WHAT THE FUCK. I just want to make a huge wave about this, this is straigh up scaming people. I couldn't live with myself if I would charge this amounts of money for installing a fucking wordpress theme and uploading a few photos. Are you kidding me. And seo scammers? is writting a 200 word essay with fucking yoast seo optimisation worth a few hundred? IS IT?14
I love the speed and lack of bugs in Sublime, especially when dealing with large files but its so shit in the themes department imo.7
After having my soul suck away by "corporate", I installed VS code on my Windows 10 gaming machine.
Now, I have a pretty hardcore dev setup on my MacOS (it's unix-based and it's good, so stop the hate). I'm talking about fully automatized Rakefile that will provision it from scratch: vim, macvim, tmux, iterm configs, 15+ brew tools, 15+ brew-cask tools, themes, plugins, etc.
Installing VS Code, Node and MongoDB on Windows, just for the fun and giggles, and not having any of my hardcore tools, made me feel like... it's something silly and fun again. I'm once again that softcore developer with no stress and no constant self-reminder to improve workflow effectiveness.
Made me a little happy.
Checkout this picture, this is my Windows 10's "tmux" lol3
I spend far more time on making my workspace look elegant (organising files, editor themes, plugins, syntax color, look and feel, custom changes in .<file>rc files, etc), than in actual learning and creating.1
Fucking fuck shit monkeycocksucking gargling wtf!
I was getting some stuff done in my accounting software and it bugged me that the fields were dark and the fonts as well, thus seeing fucking shit. This was clearly a bad choice of a gtk3 dark theme, thus i switched to the fucking default adwaita, suddenly gnome session crashes.
Ok, i just log out and log back in.
Logout.... Nothing happens.... Ctrl-alt-backspace , nothing happens (and i knew i enabled that in the settings)
Ok let's do it a bit more forceful and restart the display manager... Gdm starts... I insert my credentials... It fucking crashes.
I desperately try to debug it, xsession error msg'es? Nope. Something in /var/log/messages? Nope. Something, anything at all, nope sherlock nopedinope!
About to go batshit crazy, purging and reinstalling all of gnome, thibking that, what ever setting lust have broke it, it will be fixed now.
No fucking fuck desktop!!!
I lost my nerve and replaced gdm with lightdm, and i finally, after three hours wasted on my machine, i get my gnome desktop back... But in a state of mess! Extensions don't work and make it crash again, user themes? Nope, go fuck yourself with plain default.
I'm really losing my shit, business is almost non-existant, and now ly FUCKING desktop refuses to work like i want to. Everything is fucking broken to shits !!
I'm gon a go to my gf, and relax a little, at least i still have a working laptop.
Question is, for how long???
Can we collectively as an industry just calm down a little and stop lying to ourselves in a misguided attempt to inflate our sense of purpose...
I just stumbled upon a job listing for a WordPress developer position that described it as "helping solve the big problems of the day". Seriously?! Let's stop and get real you're probably just building themes. Maybe a plugin or two. So just relax and accept you're just another web developer building yet another 💩site you're not solving "the big problems"...
... Then again it IS WordPress...4
😂 PHPStorm's integrated terminal sucks! Doesn't play well with other oh-my-zsh themes so I just use the default theme.
Plus the ugly block cursor in the integrated terminal which cannot be edited. LOL! 😂6
Visual studio keeps switching between dark and light themes automatically every couple minutes and it's infuriating.1
I just spent a whole day learning wordpress cause it's mandatory for my graduation project and I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing.
Halp Rant: my friend is "launching" his WordPress site for his guitar lesson business this weekend and is hellbent on inviting me over to "tell him how to optimize the site before launch," regardless of all the times I've tried to tell him how WP is not very performant by nature and that his site will be fine. He thinks that I have the knowledge, and might think that not showing up will show a lack of interest in his success, but I don't know how to tell him that being a full-stack developer doesn't necessarily mean that I am familiar with how WP developers write plugins and themes. How do I explain this in layman's terms?
For reference, I mostly work with C# and JS frameworks, not PHP.8
I couldn't easily find it again and I didn't screenshot it yesterday. But this is not made up.
Yesterday I found a Sponsored post on Facebook about a class for one of WordPress premium theme with visual builder. Well it's more like a workshop rather than a class.
The description said if you want to have stable income, want to work from home, want to experience a *real developer life*, etc etc.
REAL DEVELOPER LIFE. No kidding.
I do WordPress websites. Yes I use premium themes. Yes I do visual builder. Fuck but I don't call that work real dev work and I'm not proud of those projects as real dev works.
In the end, the hungrier guy gets the bread. I guess. I haven't thought of providing such courses at all.
PS : the mentioned theme is Divi from Elegantthemes.
Why do product managers think their roadmaps/decisions are completely unrelated to our technical decisions? Information/transparency are key themes in the architecture process. In order to accept the risks, you must first understand them.
Since half of the apps that currently exist on Android are white themed, and I'm desperate to get dark themes, I've got a solution.... Invert colors and set all apps to white theme.4
Can anyone explain what is the story of Rick and Morty?
I mean the themes, storylines, etc.
And is it an adult animation?
Can teens watch it? (is there any 18+ materials, adult jokes...)14
Always thought programming on a MAC would increase productivity. Got one, now all I do is changed iTerm themes.4
Confession of the day:
- I uninstalled all dark themes from Visual Studio, I just love the light theme!5
I actually only started programming a little less than two years ago. I entered my freshman year of college as a mathematics major, but as time went on I ended up enjoying coding in C++ much more than trying to work out partial equations.
I have since become fascinated with many aspects of computer science, mainly web development and systems programming (I discovered Linux and the command line only a year ago and I'm practically in love). I've since been working for a couple fairly new startups with duties from developing a mobile native app in AngularJS/Ionic to migrating content to new servers and developing custom themes on WordPress. I have deep, deep aspirations of eventually being employed by Google as a Senior Software Dev (although I'd definitely prefer working for a company that would allow 100% remote work 😁). I've even finally began developing my own projects, ranging from a URL shortening service to a basic online encyclopedia.
I wanna spend the rest of my life doing this shit. Hell, I hope I die at my computer.1
We need a thread dedicated to just debating tabs vs spaces and light vs dark themes, every third post is about one of them!1
Why the fuck do coding blogs insist on using themes with a 600px content column, then use code samples that are 3x wider than that? The whole reason I have a widescreen monitor is to not _have_ to scroll, jackass!1
Took a day off and came back to find my team and I were moved from frontend to backend (which I always wanted to be).
Manager says we get to learn Java, Mongodb and even Hadoop.
I am so so excited.
But the only little hold back is, there is limited support for Java in sublime text and I should instead use eclipse. I had dozens of shortcuts customised with all those beautiful themes in sublime, but eclipse takes the fun out of coding(no offense to eclipse lovers).5
I used to not care whether I used light or dark themes, so I mostly used the light theme in IDEs. But, seeing as all of you like dark theme so much, I decided to only use dark theme.
Now my eyes burn when looking at white surfaces.8
The beta version of the new DEVRANT TOOLBOX is available now.
Its an unofficial web extension for Chrome and Firefox.
Chrome Web Store:
The certifaction process takes a long time, therefore I provided a direct download for the xpi file (for side loading).
Additional features: DUAL FRAME MODE (feeds left, rants right), themes (black, mono, darkgray, darkblue, comic, solarized), scrollbar plugin (perfect scrollbar, FF only), extended controls, fixed header, sorted userprofiles (by votes), autoreload (recent feed, 180 sec), highlighting new rants (recent feed), personal filter, image preview (mouseover), keyboard shortcuts, timestamps for rants, compact mode, colored notifs with clickable usernames, weekly rant.
I tested the extension with Windows Browsers only.
It would be great to get a feedback how it works with other systems!
Have fun with the toolbox.7
"Mobile optimized" themes, templates, websites etc that are looking completely broken on an actual mobile device are fucking ironic, especially those "css framework" websites.
Alright, so. If you had themes and things you would like to see in a cyberpunk novel what would they be? I already have corporate surveillance gone haywire, a neutered yet corrupt government, an active police state, and cyborgs. Protagonist is an on the grid citizen who is an off the grid hacker.4
> be me
> watching FRIENDS
> lurking internet
> get a message from the manager, "we need to deliver WordPress + woocommerce + cost calculator theme to the client".
> "but I'm, not a WordPress developer"
> "okay, I'll just find a theme for it on ThemeForest"
> *sends theme as per description*
> *reverts back with HTML5 template* "see if we can use this"
> to be honest, that template was not even close as per requirement.
> *sends another themes back and forth*
tl;dr : she finalized the theme I intially sent after half of the day
shall i just kill my self slowly with fire?
Just released another free open source project. I know the world doesn't need anymore tooltip plugins, but I had already done the work for my confirmation tooltip, so I just separated it out and added triggers and themes. https://github.com/HTMLGuyLLC/...16
So a lot of people tell me Linux is way better than Windows. And I know it's all personal preference but I was thinking about switching to linux. What's everybodies opinion?16
A normal day on my CMS as a Service...
URL: https://go to CMS
> Login screen: enter credentials, check checbox "remember me" (which doesn't remember you)
> redirected to SSO (single sign-on welcome page)
> Re-enter URL to go to CMS
> Fires up second browser on second screen, do the exact same things as above
--- Code editing
As it's a very modern CMS, you have to edit the code via the CMS using a bulky and honestly shitty editor (or rather: they didn't spend time configuring it to be at least semi-decent).
Plus default white horrible theme.
> Go to "/themes"
> Scroll all the way down the page
> Enter filename in search box
> Click the "Edit" button, which is a small button located right next to a much bigger red "DELETE" button. When you middle click (as I always open files in new tabs) on the DELETE button, it DELETES without confirmation. In such cases, you lose up to three days of work asking the providers to set it back up for you via their backup - and charge you for that. So sorry for deleting an *important* file
> Edit the file.
> Save the file - it takes 3 seconds. Upon saving, rescroll again to where you were in the code.
> On the other screen, refresh dev view of current template
> Wait 5 seconds
> If there are any special blocks, they all load via a semi-synchronous AJAX request (it's async, but they load one by one), the same time you waited to refresh your page.
> Notice you forgot adding some markup
> Re-edit the file, save...
> OH NO - I'VE BEEN BACKGROUNDEDLY DISCONNECTED. Back to Login page.
> Enter credentials.
> Am not on the CMS, but on the SSO
> Navigate back to file
> Re-write new changes
--- Manager comes in:
I need to you edit XXX objects in DB Manager (a big PHPMyAdmin if you will)
> New tab, go to https://DB
> Although still connected on CMS, I have to re-enter credentials
> Am redirected to SSO
> Re-enter https://DB
> Find the object (20 seconds of loading)
> Find the appropriate field
> Find out the field is in fact another object located elsewhere
> Uff, thank goodness, there's a shortcut button to directly edit said elsewhere object
> Operates on elsewhere object + save
> Re-edits original object + save
> ERROR 500, APPLICATION UNEXPECTEDLY CRASHED
:') painful much?
(for those who ask: yes i've got plenty of mind-reflexes in order to minimise losses)2
There is a lot of talk regarding IDE themes but what about your console?
Green text black background bash on Centos
Green text black background DOS prompt9
It was on this day, we give thanks to our lord and saviour Apple, for enabling dark themes for all!!!5
For those of you who want something comparable to the full Dark themes people have used on Linux for years here's a high contrast windows theme that doesn't look like garbage. I'm absolutely in love with it and will never go back. It's my favorite theme since the Windows classic theme. Also it's just a theme profile, so no worries about modding files or installing some malware infested theme manager.
This is amazing!
Got some case of heavy eye floaters which can be either a symptom of age or intoxication.
Mine is the latter and I tried to detox with Chlorella algae. Threw in 6 capsules at noon and now it looks like they are nearly gone.
I double checked with an about:blank page, because by looking at bright and even textures I see them all (hence a dark theme is absolutely necessary).2
Is there a program which is good for simply looking at code? It wouldn't be an editor per say, but a viewer. It should be tailored around code, have the usual highlighting, color themes is welcomed, maybe something that highlights comments, documentation and so on.
For development on Windows, this role have always been filled by Notepad++ for me because of its integration to the context menu. It does the job, but I'm wondering if there is actually something like this on the market.17
If you make themes in twig for a saas platform, for the love of god, learn twig. Learn to use partials and macro's for fucks sake.
Instead of building a good and maintainable theme I'm spending my time doing these "quick wins" that are horrible to implement. The whole thing is build up like that Escher staircase painting.
Yanno, when I pay $60 for a theme, I get what I get. That's fine. Invariably I end up having to mess with the css. That's fine too.
However, theme makers? Please don't mix hyphens and underscores in your selectors. Decide on a case style. Avoid div-itus.
And for the love of all a selector such as #Top_bar .logo #logo a.logo makes code a pain in the ass to test5
Music, but if it has words they need to be foreign. J-rock, deadmau5, gogo penguin, carrion... All are good.
Dark themes everywhere unless it's java, because it helps me compartmentalise my languages.
Second screen hooked up with the stuff I want to be viewable all the time, as it doesn't change when I switch workspaces. (bug or a feauture?)
Door shut to muffle sounds from the rest of the house, window slightly open so I don't suffocate.
Pomodoro timer on, but put phone into silent mode so no notifications disrupt my focus.
Drinks and bathroom breaks happen in the 5 minutes between pomodoro sprints. Food happens in the 15 minute breaks.
Extra RAM stick is in the mail so I lose less time waiting for android studio to exhale or whatever it's doing as it holds up the whole computer.
I might just do the java parts of my project in bluej if this ram stick doesn't alleviate my problems. I could go outside and drink mud through a metre long straw with a filter on the end sooner than android studio gets unstuck.
If anyone can add more sensible ideas I'd be happy :)1
Can anyone recommend a good free blogging site?
Was going to use wordpress but im not paying 130 AUD just to map it to a sub domain.
Blogger has very few options when it comes to themes and custom themes.
And tumblr... Is tumblr (I was using it but decided to rid myself of such filth)7
For : Web devs, especially corporate website developers. (home, about, services, contact pages with content update features, bla bla)
Question : Is there an open sourced PHP solution between Wordpress and Laravel?
- I do not want full framework like laravel for such simple website.
- Laravel is too much and heavy for standard corporate websites and not all clients can afford ssh-enabled servers.
- I do not want full CMS features like plugins, themes, etc from Wordpress.
- Wordpress themeing is not super difficult but also not as simple as Laravel's blades.
- I also don't wanna go static since the content update needs to be dynamic.
- I am willing to write own templates, CRUDs in minimal approach just for specific parts based on clients requirements.
- I want something that can easily host on shared hosting. (do not have to worry about composer and ssh)
I uninstalled ES File explorer couple months ago when reports emerged of them misusing data. Was unable to find other explorer until I came across Solid Explorer.
Amazing app. Had to pay something around 0.5$ or so but it's totally worth it.
Feature packed with uncluttered UI. Many themes to choose from. Really awesome. Hats off to devs
Anyone have any good suggestions for Java IDEs/Editors? I'm using Eclipse right now, and since I'm a student I can get IntelliJ Ultimate free, except I can't figure out why the run/debug buttons are greyed out...
Also would be cool to suggest good dark themes for whichever program you guys mention. And which OS would be good to use? I'm thinking Ubuntu right now
Plz don't hate for these dumb questions, I'm only a first year xD9
I mostly can’t see properly on dark themes. Thank you light themes for existing. I use slightly dark themes for IDEs though (One Dark)4
Why do apps dont keep the black theme as default!??
From any ide to Twitter to even devrant!
Black theme looks so cool.. Why not just set it as the default one! Most users switch to it eventually anyways.
I am sick of searching it in the settings everytime I install a new app.4
Hey @dfox , after using this awesome app for some time now I thought about Posting some feedback about some stuff which may can be improved in future releases:
Maybe it would make sense to seperate the notifications in two areas: one area for your received likes and one area for comments made on your posts or posts you comments on. I often find myself not seeing when someone commented on a post because of the many like notifications.
Speaking about the likes I sometimes click on the Username to see who liked a post. If you don't hit the username you are taken to the post instead of the profile. Maybe it would make sense to make the username a little bit bigger or give it some button like layout to make it easier to click, because I often find myself not hitting the username correctly.
Dark Mode is a great Feature, but it would be even better if you could choose when to use darkmode and when to use lightmode based on time maybe, so that those two themes automatically switch.
These are just my 2 cents, which in my opinion would make the app even better than it is and which you may consider in some future releases.
All in all I really like this app and the Community is great, so thanks for creating it. :)4
Why is every dev obsessed with dark themes? I feel like I NEED to like them as well to fit in. :/10
I'm dead. Atom is so slow. When I turn it on, it takes 3 minutes to fully load. After I edited the styles.less file, It's slower than Pycharms or InteliJ. I'm thinking about switching to either Emacs or Sublime Text 3. I used both of them before. I hate Sublimes themes but It's easier to use tham Emacs. Vim is not an option.14
Me: *tinkering on a webpage that spits out random characters, motivations, themes, and genres for the purpose of short story creation*
Me: Okay, so we have a young girl, with the motivation of The Power of Friendship, the theme of Crime, with the story structure of Dan Harmon, and set in a Fantasy genre.
Coworker: Dan Harmon? Improvise. Wait... A young girl, on a Purge planet who befriends Morty... I mean a young boy from a different universe.
Me: *a minute later* Wait a second, that was an episode of Rick and Morty!!
Coworker: I did that on purpose because you said Dan Harmon.1
Asked our developers to build a site framework that can scale globally for all our brands.
Tell them to start with these 3 brands
They tell me they will use Drupal for the base, fair enough, i did pick them as they listed ex extensive drupal skills on their resume
Let them work on it, then time comes to deliver and I get handed 3 completely separate drupal sites that are just simply 3 individual commerce Kickstart sites with some really bad themes applied.
Asked what the fuck this is and get told that 'multi-site was too difficult and' is still a goal platform /framework because you can run multiple Drupal sites on one server.'
These people were hired and their resumes said things like' drupal multi-site developer'
Needless to say I get to hire the devs now.2
Does you code also look like a Christmas tree?
I installed a few plugins and themes in Visual Studio and now operators, fields and values all have different color coding. Not to forget rainbow brackets.6
Why can't developers get dark themes right, or at least let me stylize it the way I want it? If you are only changing the background, black is *never* a good choice because it contrasts too much with the other default (and still bright) colors. Dark gray works much better.2
VS Code and SourceTree are two of the most used tool by me this year.
SourceTree helps me visualise the git commit history and branches more than git log can.
VS Code, on the other hand helps me with all the short code editing stuff and sometimes even helps when I don't want to open a full fledged IDE for the project. I have setup my own Icon themes for VS Code and even created watchers for files. Can't do this much on Webstorm so easily.
About 3 years ago, we had 4 different WordPress sites for various clients.
My colleagues thought it'd be a genius idea to keep them all in one repo. Even more genius, for local development, a single installation which implements a switcher for the wp-config.php files so we can switch between sites. Not bad in theory.
Fast-forward to present day. 1 client left; another site got converted to using Laravel because they always asked us to update their content so no point using a CMS; whereas the remaining 2 sites use differing versions of WordPress on their live sites, no less than 18 months out of date, have no dev sites, different collection of plugins and themes and both modified to the deepest darkest depths of fucking hell that's barely recognisable as WordPress anymore and next to no documentation or comments around the changes.
The functions.php file of one of these themes is over 4000 lines long!!!
We're keen to upgrade our servers to use Ubuntu 16.04 which defaults to PHP7, so all the already deprecated WordPress functions will then fail to work completely as will have been removed.
Both of these clients have agreed that they wish to convert Laravel as well so there's not really much point in going through the clean up process of their WordPress sites. Just copy the database nuke it all and start a fresh with Laravel FFS!
They also wish to completely redesign and discuss what features to keep/add/remove. With no date for these redesign meetings in sight, we won't be converting to Laravel any time soon, nor upgrading our servers in the foreseeable future either!
This is all because of one dev in the office and his history of failing to keep on top of breaking changes!
Fuck you! Seriously, fuck you!!!
If I was your superior, then you'd have been fired long ago!3
I honestly don't know how people use Apple products. I feel like Apple is so limited. I don't know maybe I am wrong because I have used nothing but Android my whole life....11
If you publish a package over Composer - or in fact any package manager that allows optional dependencies - please don't make dependencies that aren't **absolutely necessary** required.
Is it a theme for your nice app? Don't make it required, some are not going to want to use this theme and don't want to deploy extra Megabytes to their servers every single time.
In fact, someone may even want to replace that dependency with a fork, like a customized version of that theme because it is not flexible enough! Forcing that dependency means it can only be replaced with hacks.
I am looking at you, `oxid-esales/oxideshop-metapackage-ce`, with your extra themes and demoshop data that makes the Deployer tool push and copy around half a Gigabyte of unused assets on a website every single deployment!!2
Yes WP sites can be bad.
But as bad as it can be, just as easy it can serve as a good kickstarter for the next website.
If just the developer behind said website has some kind of dignity about the code they produce and respect for their fucking job!
1. Don't use bloated plugins.
2. Always vheck out alternatives.
3. Don't ever use paid plugins/themes... just don't.
I for one, whenever installing a plugin, if said plugin generates any kind of unexpected output such as a notice it's an immidiate uninstall, and then rolling my own.
I also use a bare minimum boilerplate theme which does not bundle any frameworks, additional libaries or other kinds of that bloatware for all my wp sites, this ensures that every site is somewhay unique.
I've seen so many "devs" being lazy as fuck, using the wrong themes/plugins to "code" the site.
No! using page builders such as visual composer or bloatware slideshows does not count as good tools.
If you buy a theme from themeforest thinking it will save you hours of custom development, then fuck you... go drown in acid.. because guess fucking what?
It will save you absolutely jack shit in the long run..
Anything stating otherwhise is marketing bullcrap4
Has anyone else installed Ubuntu 18.04 and have their themes not working (I'm using arc thenes), and the top bar menu options like file, edit, etc not appearing? I can't find fixes.
AND WHY IS 18.04 SLOWER WITH GNOME?!
This better all be fixed by the final release. Also by slower, I mean animations, opening certain apps, like wth.6
So people mentioned hexo here and I got really interested, since it seems really lightweight and has nice themes ready to download, but I don't get it, you have to re-generate via "hexo generate" the public html each time you want to publish something new?2
Spent all day testing different desktop environments and themes/icons. Finally settled for Vanilla Ubuntu with the Budgie-Desktop environment, arc-theme dark and paper icons. What are you running?3
Was wondering, what's so good about dark themes? I just use the default and tried but don't use things like Flux.
I don't feel I have any problems but.... wondering if I should switch?6
Another day, another weird trend that's come up on devRant. Today it's Light Theme vs Dark Theme. Take your pick and place your bets! 'cause after setting Windows to dark theme, I ain't leavin' it! What about you guys?4
Came back to ubuntu after a long time and installed the latest LTS 18.04.
snap comes preinstalled? WTF?
the system apps are snaps? WTFF?
themes don't work inside snap apps? Fuuuuuckkkk
Who thr fuck invented snap? tell them I'll skin them alive if I ever got the chance.
fucking piece of shits.
CROSS PLATFORM APPS MY ASS6
So actually on the note of my last rant. What music does everyone code to? I code to EDM, JPop, Vocaloid, old video game battle themes and Heavy Metal.
One Punch Man opening is a favorite when deadlines draw near.10
I prefer bash instead of zsh shell. I like the oh my zsh themes though 😍🤔
"Live and breathe bash"
What theme or shell do you guys use ?15
Ooooh. devRantron looks really fancy. Thanks for the AUR package :)
Really liking the themes "coming soon" - We must convert them all over to the dark side! Muhahahahah!
Erm I mean... *whistles*4
I‘m currently trying to get an SFTP user for our school's webspace (preinstalled WordPress, don't hate it - it's "great" for non-"it" people) and our network administrator means that he can't create one for me because I would have access to all files on the server.
WTF, you can create SFTP users on Linux and restrict their access and even set a home directory.
Yeah, now we need to forget about themes and plugins in WordPress.
(He said that he also can't create an FTP user)1
Anyone got any favorite Atom themes/plugins?
Mine right now is HTML Live Preview, just to save myself from having to refresh every 10 seconds 🙃3
Company is hiring a new PM (the first one, to allow me, the only dev, to concentrate on developing and not dealing with client crap) and I'm being allowed in on the vetting process.
Background: we maintain quite a few WordPress ecommerce sites, so part of the job spec was to be familiar with WordPress environments and the codebase, and that they have a least 3 years of PM experience.
1st phone interview: I'm an experienced WordPress developer, been doing it for 5 years.
Me: oh cool, can you show us examples of themes, plugins, and extensions you've created?
Guy: oh, no, I just install pre-made stuff.
currently I'm kinda lost in web dev, particularly WordPress themes. As I'm knew to this stuff, I feel I'm going to the wrong direction.
I don't know how to properly make a website, until know I've been doing it all by hand, but as I stated theming, I started using sass, auto prefixes, minify (js|css) and I'm wrapping all this with GNU make.
I'm certain this seems wrong, but what should I do??6
Been doing some sprucing/ricing up of the ol' desktop and wm, what themes would you guys say work most smoothly with the Plano Dark WM theme? (got it here https://xfce-look.org/p/1174518/ ). Adwitta dark is doing an... ok job for now. i'd rather have something a little flatter to match with my titlebar though!2
I promised few days ago that I'll talk about my first job. So let me begin and tell you the job that made me hate idea of working for someone.
So I was 17 at the time and I was a blogger turned developer, who started with basic HTML when was 16 and then started to play with PHP and JS when I migrated my blog to WordPress. I loved to develop but never learned it so didn't think I could ever learn it. I wasn't a student of computer. So I learned PHP and JS by playing with WordPress. Soon started to make plugins, non-WordPress projects.
I didn't have much money then so once I started to find a job and found a company near my house which was looking for a PHP/WordPress developer. I didn't think I'm good for it but applied. I got the job. My first project was to make a portfolio plugin as a trial and he gave me seven days to finish it.
I did it in few hours and presented him with the final outcome in the first day of my job. And then he gave me themes to develop, I did 2-3 of them in a single week.
So that's about what I did. Let me tell you about the company. Every guy who worked there was a good person and supportive but the boss was a dipshit.
He didn't see the team or people but just money. I was being paid some $100 to work 8 hours a day while I was doing projects that would make him more than $100 in a single day. But that's financial stuff.
And one day he asked me to fix an issue on one of the clients he was maintaining for a client. It used WooCommerce and the payment part wasn't working. I found out that he hasn't enabled shipping to client's country and that's why it wasn't working. So basically it was something that his company fucked up. I fixed it and then he asked me to undo the changes. Then he called the client and told him that it was broken by client and it'll require more money and time. I WAS SHIT CRAZY. YOU FUCKED IT UP AND NOW YOU'RE CHEATING THE CLIENT. NOT ETHICAL.
WordPress was at 3.9 version then and he was using 3.4. I was like what?
I quit the job after 7 days. He made me hate working for someone.
One good thing happened, because of all the work that I was doing there I got enough confidence to start my own projects so that was great. And one day one of the companies from Romania saw my project and offered me a job which paid 10x the money for working half the hours. And I've been working for them for almost three years now. They are ethical and genuinely care about the people working for them.
So one more thing, I saw my former boss sometime ago and he told me that HE INSTALLED KEY LOGGER ON ALL THE COMPANY LAPTOPS TO TRACK THE EMPLOYEES. I WAS LIKE WHAT THE FUCK?
Code quality doesn't matter for him as long as the solution works, even if it's not secure. He had so many people with great talent working for so less pay.
Tell me your worse job experience.2
Hy to all,
I managed to install Archlinux after 3 days of continues documentation but I still have some problems that I need to solve.
1. Any idea how to run gnome-terminal?
I've set the locale if you guys are wondering and installed vt3.
2. Couldn't install visual studio code.
3. How do I install themes. I have gnome gui.
I've read the arch documentation but still can't figure out how to solve some of the problems. If you guys have a website with a good guide or any tips that would be great.
Thx in advance.1
Headache, bronchitis, feature creep. But for years I've used light themes. Now I'm using dark themes and it's easier on my eyes. Hmm. Used to hurt my eyes to use dark! Anyway it's about the worst day to try this out because. ..just switched to clients text messages and the "know you're not feeling well but ..." burnt into my retinas bc i didn't think ahead to change any non IDE or dev related to a dark theme.
I was using prismjs to do some code block hightlighting stuff, and while it has some different themes it doesn't have my favorite one: the Darcula theme from JetBrains... So I made one :D https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
I mainly use it with Gatsby but since it's just a css (or scss) file you can use it pretty much however you want. If you guys do use it let me know if you have any suggestions/improvements!
Just installed Visual Studio Code on my fresh machine and finally got the chance again to cherry pick extensions and themes :D
What Extensions and Themes have you installed and which do you frequently use?(doesn't matter for which programming language)3
I have an upcoming team meeting whereby we are going to ask the team on how they think we (as in the department) are doing? This can cover anything really from the way deliver code, interact or even just the wider context such as the office space we occupy.
I don’t want the session to be a free for all moan, so what techniques have other developers employed to elicit feedback?
In the past I’ve done a big piece of paper with sections:
What we do well
What we can improve
What we are poor at
We then asked people to write post it’s and attach them to the paper. These were gathered into broad themes and we then voted on as to which people felt most strongly about.
Just looking for suggestion of how I could make the session more successful. Thanks.1
I'm beginning to design websites using WordPress. The issue is, every client wants their website to be styled differently. ive looked into creating my own themes, but a new theme for each client is just unrealistic.
Somebody pointed me towards dopewp.com, which is a Bootstrap based theme with a page builder. I've settled for the idea that I need one theme that'll do the job everywhere, but there's more questions past that.
should I develop my own Bootstrap theme, or use freemium software (which I hate) like dopewp? another option would be to build my own Bootstrap theme, or a completely new Bootstrap CMS.
I just don't know...6
Inspired by @Raspik's post on MacOS, I too would like to admit something.... I don't like dark themes.
http://studiostyl.es/ is a excellent source for getting themes for Visual Studio.
But when you try to use it under C++, it looks like complete garbage and then you notice the theme was last updated 8 years ago and didn't supported C++ from the start.
You're damned to use the Dark or Light theme forever.1
I am new to Ubuntu or any Linux OS and have been hearing a few good things about them.
So few days ago I decided to try out the Ubuntu 17.10, after which I installed Gnome Tweak Tool to customize the look and feel. After installing some themes and applying them I found the whitish bar appear as you can see in the photo I attached. I do not like it (hated it also when I used Windows). Please how do I make this go away as I have googled alot about it but cant get anything helpful.
I also have the issue of my Windows button not performing any shortcut task as before like showing the desktop screen (this now happens when I click the Windows buttton + A key)
Thank you all9
Anyone knows a good way to enable dark mode for any website? I used to use the Stylish plugin for firefox to get dark themes on sites I am visiting frequently such as github, gitlab etc however most of these themes broke pretty often.
Are there other ways to dark theme websites, in a way that is more reliable and doesn't break on every second website visit? ._.4
Installing VS Code on Ubuntu. Anybody got some plugins/themes they can suggest? I usually use Brackets; Atom for React3
Light theme in Notepad++ and dark theme everywhere else. I tried dark themes in npp but didn't find any of those as good as default light theme.2
As much as I prefer dark themes, I do prefer the Colorful theme for Office 365. Really helps all its apps stand out and gives them personality.
I really need to get used to dark themes on editors and probably browsers before my eyes just leave me for good. 😂😂😂
I'm still stuck with Windows 10 build 1703, if and only if the story comes without bugs then I'll update to the latest build.......
I'm still battling with the themes crashing settings........
windows 10 and a lot of fail testing ????
Tell me what error you've noticed in the latest windows 10 build????2
Man I'm annoyed!
TL;Dr what does it mean "we're trying to reduce options to a minimum", why don't you go closed source!? why don't you remove themes!?
For anyone who uses rofi, they would know that a few months ago an update made it more compliant with the free-desktop spec, that it only uses the first .desktop file for the given Name tag.
I only found out about this recently as I was only able to update Manjaro recently, and it really annoyed me, cause it took me a while to figure out why tons of my desktop entries disappeared.
Turns out someone made an issue about this, and the given answer was: "that's against the spec". Ok, fine. But when I asked if they could add an option to still ignore that aspect of the spec (i.e. --show-duplicated), the response I got was: "going against the spec is a no-go". WHAT!?
There are so many things that have behavior that goes against the spec (ex. gnu-utils), why can't they add an option to do this!? An OPTION!?
When I decided to try (I don't know C yet) and make a PR, the first and last (it got locked afterwards!) comment I got was:
" As explained on #941, this is a no-go. We want to reduce the number of options to the minimum, and non-compliance to a well-defined and widely implemented spec is definitely not something we want."
Why are you so closed minded!? Yes compliance is amazing, but it's not a safety standard, it's okay if you *give an option* to go against the spec!!!!
WHAT THE HECK!?!?!? WHY!?!?!?
Why is a open source project closed to new features that are part if the scope of the project, and require minimal maintenance!?11
I recently came across KDE Plasma and it looked good enough for me to try it out. So I'm installing it currently... let's see how that goes!
Already selected a few themes to try too: Adapta, Arc, Nilium, and Noc and Lux.
Any suggesting/tips for a new KDE user who's coming from Gnome?6
I am thinking about quiting my job. The version of Eclipse my company is using has a bug for dark themes when highlighting a repeated word... it has the same color as the background...2
Right, budget constraints, in out project. Shop site. Lets go with a good online shop system (shopwired) and just brand up a suitable theme. Client wants to see design flats prior to starting. OK brief designer. Pick one of the themes that is close to their current brand styling. Grab the theme pages, set your browser to 1280. Mock up over the top with brand colours/fonts etc in Indesign and png the pages over to me (make sure we have them on google fonts). Designer comes back a few days later with branded up theme page visuals. Cool, they look great, shouldn’t take too long to rework the css and get this thing working. Client approves mockups. Great, so open the theme files and realise the designer has fucking moved stuff around. This has turned into something more than a styling job. Fucking hell. there goes my budget and deadline. Why don’t you designers ever fucking listen!!!!!
I should’ve done it myself but needed to save time as I’m already busy. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!
What are your favorite intellij themes apart from darcula and whatever that default bright thing is called?2
The Chrome plugin "Darkness" (I might have mentioned it before 😅)
Yes I know "Stylish" was a thing and it has been replaced, but by then I was way to invested in "Darkness" and it has some features that the others are missing; the styles are tested and maintained and it has themes to choose from.
And it has been a nice experience working with scss 😄
Todays website fail, looks like someone is using a NFS mount for the site:
"Deprecated: Non-static method PageLinesTemplate::current_admin_post_type() should not be called statically, assuming $this from incompatible context in /nfs/c03/h03/mnt/166492/domains/makerspace.com/html/wp-content/themes/pagelines/admin/class.options.metapanel.php on line 30"
Started by jail breaking an ipod gen 2,which turned into getting homebrew to run on my Wii. Soon that turned into rooting my first android device and quickly snowballed into compiling themes for android and then building apps for Android. I was actually in school for xray tech but hit a wall in that waiting on a spot into the program. Decided I needed to proceed with my education and changed to a programming degree.2
started working on an existing project of a customer from our company today.
The readme.md says you need to run it in docker but apparently thats wrong. You have to symlink the repo inside wp-content/themes. Then install some packages via npm but only for node-7 because node-sass will only work that way. Then install some packages via bower becausy, why not? and lastly run a webserver via gulp that serves the parent wordpress-directory.
But wait, theres more:
The staging environment is a macbook for internals, thats running in our office 24/7 and serves the website via ngrok...
I was always a huge dark theme guy. Still am for most things, like here. But I’ve found myself starting to like the black on white with lighter themes. Am I nuts or does anybody else who has been doing this longer than me have input? Any schemes that we love or are the easiest on the eyes (referring to hurting my eyes after hours of working) ?2
I swear there is just no documentation on GTK3 themes. I'm trying to change window decorations in an existing GTK theme and there's just no info out there. On top of that my posts for help have gotten a grand total of 0 replies.
If you happen to know where I can find some info about it I would really appreciate it.
I have a technical job interview via phone call later today and would like some advice on what to prepare for.
The role is Junior Web Developer and here is what's expected of me:
- Good knowledge of HTML and CSS
- Some experience with a PHP framework such as Laravel
- Some experience developing themes for content management systems such as WordPress
- Basic familiarity with Git or other VCS
Those are fairly low requirements and I meet or exceed them individually but just want to ensure I prepare properly.
What can I expect?4
Ask lots of questions....ask employees....gather the atmosphere on your walk in for the interview....ask around...if the teams interviewing you in my opinion that’s a good sign. If a non technical manager with a question sheets running the show then warning flag. If they mention Wordpress ask them drag and drop or custom themes. Same with drupal and other cms. Your a dev not a glorified intern. BIG ONE in my opinion: ask how they measure performanace and more importantly how they assure that their developers are constantly keeping up to date with the newest tools.
For someone who want to sell software products as a part time job what is better:-
sell scripts and code in codecanyon, Sell WordPress plugins or buy themes?or you have another suggestion?3
WordPress and it's fucking buggy themes and dashboard, fml ,only God knows why on earth I decided to use this pile of shite wordpress.if I could I would have migrated to another CMs I would have done so long time ago.Wordpress, you are wasting my life away having to manage a website with your buggy shit.6
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1
I just installed Arch for the first time, currently only on my usb stick, but still. The feeling when I finally saw xfce working is better than pizza AND beer. Now to actually make it look good. Any recommendations to themes/icons?
Thinking of making some themes. Do people still do that these days? Is it a big market place?
Might start small with a jekyll github pages theme and see if I actually finish it.1
Guys I need some input.
So me and my coworker discussed IDEs and I told him about this comment I read on StackOverflows blogpost about the developer survey of 2019.
Here's The link: https://stackoverflow.blog/2019/02/...
And the comment mentioned that he/she wanted more choices when it comes to IDE themes.
That got me thinking, what other than light/dark would be Nice to have. And why?
And why arent we given more than two to choose from?8
I find it funny that most people who use dark themes don't even know about the light themes. Like Discord for example, everybody I asked didn't even know there was a light theme for it.3
Everyone have their favourite IDE, but to me Plunker😊 has been a great one it has hell of capabilities and don't forget about the themes it has.. *dark mode* 👌
Every damn time I wanna make sample code ..voila plunker it is ! Best for Mean stack development 👈
Am I the only one who loves it ??1
A FuckFace guy today did this
FuckFace and I both hate Apple
FuckFace hates Apple blindly and hates everything related to Apple and can't even justify shit
I hate Apple for their stupid decisions
Then we meet a guy who is a friend of our boss I started to tell him how I don't like apple and I leave the conversation
FuckFace enters the conversation stupidly makes some fucking stupid comments make the other guy angry and now our boss is telling us shit about how we should not do this and not do fucking that
I had nothing to do with this shit I am gonna stab FuckFace tomorrow
So in our CS community specially from where I come from ($ecurity) people, we have long debate about how Linux is superior from those Mac and other Apple line ups
I mean I use Linux everyday as my primary OS for CTF for coding and basically everything.
But can we fucking for once acknowledge that Mac people have better UI than us?
Like go to the gnome theme store for god sake we have fucking top 10 filled with various kinds of flavors of apple UI from icons of la capitaine to mc cruise gtk3 themes
But still people blindly hate everything about apple
I mean I hate their overpriced ass and other stuff too but the UI IS SAUCE
Linux peeps no hate though
Apple peeps you guys are going to tangle in your dongle's one day 😊9
Hi, in my latest project I'm stuck on the CSS part.
I've already an Grunt + Sass Asset Generator for bootstrap.
The project has several (> 70) subpages aka modules.
The theming is client based, currently 4 clients with different colors.
At first I thought it was easy...
Splitting bootstrap to variables per client + bootstrap, so:
client1_bootstrap.scss (including client1_variables).
. . .
But now I'm stuck.
Reaason: The css classes are the same between the clients, eg client-bg-primary is the class.
I wanted to prevent generating for each client a folder - as every folder would contain the same content:
Each SCSS file would only differ in the variable import...
Is there a way to prevent a Global Module CSS file for each client (as there are @##* fucking classes duplicated and I really don't want to untangle that mess) but not ending up with writing the same Code over and over?
The IRC sass channel is moderated, not possible to ask there... And when I google I find mostly themes based on an class approach (border-light vs border-dark)… :(2
People wonder why I use a page builder when creating a WordPress site?!
I do it to get FUCKING CUSTOMIZATION on your site. Some themes are so limited.....2
A retraction/update to my previous rant: use Stylus over Stylish for dark website themes. It is a fork of Stylus before it was bought by an analytics company. Thanks to those who pointed it out.1
Hey everyone. I wouldn't do this normally but this is actually my first project that has gone live ehich was also the base of my study for becoming front-end dev. Its a front end lib that mixes bootstrap with styled components. But also explains a way to create react components with variables and theming helpers to quickly create components and themes that are sharable.
Any help testing and criticising would be of great help. We are trying to be reactive for bug correction and improvements.
There are so many options to pimp my linux system. Is there any point in time, where I will be finished customizing/prettifying my linux? I highly doubt.
BTW.. what is the best way to backup the whole config? (color schemes, themes, gnome extensions)2
Could we have other dark themes on here? I was thinking of something with different combinations of colours and contrast options. What do you think?3
Looking for a suggestion for a Visual Studio material theme, or any other good dark themes, because my eyes can no longer stand the default dark theme.
I'm just a beginner with CSS, nodejs, sass and whatsoever. Also I really enjoy writing my docs with Markdown, so I decided to make an effort and create a project that aims to create an easy-to-use and easy-to-apply Markdown themes, that can be customized.
I know that this may be horrible code, but If someone can point me in a good direction, I'd be glad to learn and apply it.
I fucking hate shits around Wordpress. It's the most free-but-not-free software I ever used.
Someone knows a good website where i can found all free (not free but with paid version) themes?4
Can someone explain me how installing a lightdm greeter (web-greeter) can completely break gtk+ themes and elementary-tweaks. How is that even related to each other and why does my fucking lock screen still look like crap? Seriously, I spent the whole day trying to fix my desktop environment and now it turns out that removing a lightdm config file fixes gtk themes on my desktop. How on earth is a fucking lightdm config file related to my desktop environment's ability to load gtk+ themes. It doesn't make sense. I should really stop messing around with things...10
