Few months ago I made an app for my buddy. Because it was simple soundboard app (it literally took me 15 minutes) I haven’t took any money. He said it’s for personal use only...
So he released it under his name on Google Play Store... And now he asks me to add advertisements... For free... When I asked him what can I get from it, he said “you can add your name to Credits”
That’s how you loose trust and buddies!22 -
My previous job I got by winning an Xbox Kinect hackathon. Not because the game I made was really good or anything. But because I was the only one who actually built something. (Apart from a guy who’s application would cheer louder as you raised your arms.) So that evening I left the hackathon with an Xbox one and a job.
My job was to build advert games, games whose primary goal is to advertise a company or event. This is the job where I learned I DO NOT like game development. So after about half a year I quit.
Because I still needed money I did some freelance work as a game developer (I developed 3 advert games for 3 startups).
I was still looking around for dev jobs but because I was a student I had no luck, they were all looking for full timers.
At some point I called this one (Dutch) company and spoke to a very odd French person on the phone. He invited me to come over for an interview. I had very little information about the job so I started researching the company. They are a small company specialized in complex content migrations. I wasn’t that into migrations but hell, I’m always up for something new.
Upon arrival I was greeted by the familiar French voice and saw a collection 6 diverse developers sharing a space. We did the usual interview dance and practices and that’s where I figured out this is a java job. They developed tools for the professional services team to perform these complex migrations I mentioned earlier. With me never having touched java before I was quite sure I wouldn’t get the job. But I took the test anyway.
About halfway through the test I was stopped and they started to ask me some conceptual questions, I did okay there but nothing special. That same day the architect took me to their CEO and told him I had:
- very little experience
- no migration experience
- was still a student so could only work 20 hours a week
- he saw some potential they could work with
Quite unexpectedly, they still hired my 20 year old ass.
Now the company has grown to a good 20+ developers with a nicely sized professional services team and we are launching our first out-of-the-box product in a couple of weeks.
So that’s how I got my job. If you read to this very end, my hat is off to you!8 -
This is how my day has gone so far:
1. In car, see advert about hackathon
2. Look it up, see tickets go on sale in 30mins
3. Read more about hackathon, apparently tickets go within minutes
4. Get tickets, print
5. Printer out of ink
6. Accidentally deleted ticket, can't reprint
7. No more tickets left so can't get another
8. Spend hours with data recovery tools
9. Remember recycle bin. Reprint ticket
10. Cry
11. Rant on devRant11 -
This is Facebook Messenger. And thats a fuckin Advert. Fuckin adverts in my fuckin inbox. For fuck me's sake, What the fuck17

This job advert of an IT company would throw a compile-time error. Perfectly geared to the target group.12
-
Wait! I screenshot this from the advert of a company who advertises code academy.
Does this mean they want to train people on how to edit minified codes? 🙄
Cos it looks like this guy just opened jquery.min.js and took a picture.
I can't help it. 💔😂😂😂9 -
Today I found the reason for one of the stupidest bugs I had in like.. ever!
Me and a fellow student are currently porting the infoscreen of our university to HTML.
One of the functions of this screen is showing payed advertising and I was working on loading and displaying the images of our advertisment partners.
I had the whole system in place, and the images loaded.. but they wouldn't show. Upon inspection I saw they were displayed but with a size of 0x0 px.
I spend hours searching the web for javascript bugs, double checking my css file and everything you could imagine. I even asked my CS professor for help and he didn't find the cause for this strange issue I had.
..and then I saw it. A little note in Chromes inspector saying the image style would be set by my user-agent. Despite not trusting that information, I closely inspected my browser.
And then it dawned on me.. I would turn my adblocker off and lo and behold.. it worked!
I then, after celebrating my triumph, changed the tag of the img element from 'advert' to something else…3 -

I swear to god if see another "Here's how I made my amazing new website with Wixs" advert on Youtube, I'm going to throw my laptop out the god damn window!
</rant>8 -
Just saw an advert with the tag line similar to "An API built by developers, for developers"
Which makes me wonder. Do non-devs build APIs? How does that work?
The same to using APIs. Surely some dev knowledge/experience is required?5 -
Apple are annoyingly out of touch, has anyone seen the iPad Pro advert? They run the ad where a kid asks 'What is a computer?' and it boils my blood because a tablet is basically a computer. I get the point they're trying to make but assuming that 'a post-PC world is closer than you think' is a bit far fetched.
I mean are they planning on discontinuing the iMac? I don't think so. Annoying and smug ad for their touch screen computer.4 -
Recently I came across a job advert that literally said:
"If you're still full of ideals and will to work, go look for a job elsewhere!!!"
Man, how fucked up is your company if this is how you promote it? Sad thing is that even though their website looked like shit, they boasted about big government projects there.2 -
Found this on the big ass advert screen outside my cinema. The Dino represents my feelings very well to that exact message 😂1

I bought a domain and need some styling suggestions.
it basically demonstrates how language barriers can hurt communication (and I want to screw over google)
so, it takes a phrase and translates it to a bunch of random languages with google translate to see how messed up it gets.
the link is:
https://translationiteration.com
READ BEFORE CLICKING: i still have an unresolved bug with php cookies and sessions so once the page loads, just press refresh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
so now i need some styling suggestions, and advertiser suggestions (i’m thinking media.net) who respect user privacy and are contextual.
comment :)
p.s. does anyone still say advert or am I the only one ? 🙃20 -
Just saw an advert for a well known store, who are supporting Care for Children this Christmas. Nice advert.
One commentor trashed it saying "it doesn't mention anything about Jesus and it doesn't make sense". I replied with "neither does miraculous conception".
I was then called "ignorant"....
Interesting. People are...interesting.2 -
The graphic cards supply is completely madness. Even after the crypto crash it is not possible to buy RTX cards at price any close to MSRP.
But today my jaw drop when I saw auction on popular online portal where some guy was selling a place in a queue in another store. The title was "Rights to buy RTX 3080" and for 400$ you could potentially buy a GPU for the price close to MSRP. I think this was too much and after a few hour the advert was took down.5 -
Interested to know if anyone has ever clicked on an advert (on purpose) to buy some shit from the internet? And if so what was it? To me adverts on the internet are like flies hovering around your food, especially news sites.9
-
"let's put an advert right next to the login/registration area so everyone can see the ads"
Thanks for reminding why I love adblock, how retarded you are and why you should never be allowed to touch ux/ui.
f your theory about users != customers.
Hope better ads standards slaps in your face, HARD1 -
One would have thought YouTube would have figured out I'm not interested in Grammarly by now. Machine learning at its pinnacle.
Anyone else get a Grammarly advert every second video?10 -
I realized how much I suck at maths.
But seriously now, I started understanding the way things work, what makes them 'tick'.
It feels good to look at a random huge advert screen and immediately conjure up a pseudocode how I imagine the developers must have done it.1 -
Yesterday I bought a book. I did not know about it. So I read the first few pages before purchasing it. I did not look for the review online. I paid by card - not through my phone or contactless, just plain old card going into a chip and pin device.
This morning I got an advert in Facebook that I should buy the second part of the book. I know they snoop my online activity. In a weird way I kind of accepted it. I guess my question is how'd they know so much of my personal life.
I'd probably will leave Facebook today. I am sure they are watching this status as well. I hope the jackass behind this learns in my own small way I tried to stand up against their jackassery. Like everyone else here I from IT. I hope some one (or many) from this extraordinary community who is a lot more capable than I am, stands up to this invasion and make an end to this snooping.9 -
Just saw an advert for a macbook Air in a local computer store. They called it "power. To. The tenth power"1

Does anyone know of a advertisement service that donates to charity directly? I'd like to put ads on my site, but I don't wanna do it manually1

Finally got myself a rocketbook everlast. Now just 1 Notebook instead of pads and bits of paper. It was a sound investment and the phone app for scanning is great. I can scribble all i want and only save the important bits. I’d highly recommend this.
https://kickstarter.com/projects/...
you can buy it on amazon.
its not an advert, it helped me stay organised and just wanted to share with the community.2 -
I think I may be someone's wk101soon given how things are going for me.
So I get shipped over to the new offices to do some work. Initially, I was supposed to be updating SQL stored procedures.
That I can handle, well my task is now to build the skeleton project for a web API in core 2.0 using domain driven design and onion architecture which the rest of the team will use.
Okay, I don't have any experience in any of that at all. And god bless the team lead explaining some stuff to me. But it's going to take more than a 20-minute chat here and there for this stuff to sink in.
And being told just to build it how you think it should be isn't great advice when I'm trying to figure out how the systems work.
Every other API project I look at is structured completely different from one another so looking for patterns has failed.
I'm fucking stressed out every bit of information I'm getting on whats potentially happening with my job im getting second hand from people. Because I can't access my emails while off-site something I'm repeatedly flagging.
Every job advert is painstakingly making it clear how out of date my skill set is (or lack of). Evidently, I've been way too lax, and this has been a kick in the bollocks I'm not likely to forget.
If we're being evaluated on performance to see who they'll keep, then I've failed at the first hurdle.
Life lesson for those in education, don't be this knob head here and get comfortable when you land a job. Just knowing about the tech that's commonly used in your field does jack all study it.
Not a structured/meaningful rant and shits probably not as bad as I see it. I've only chewed through one fingernail after all.1 -
YouTube interrupting me with an advert that is 3x as loud as my music with annoying jingles that make my ears bleed.
I don’t want to buy Spotify pro because I’m poor okay let me just listen to music on YouTube in peace.11 -
I was watching cards @ rams on Monday. Commercials were on so naturally I was using my phone when suddenly I hear the slack's notification sound from somewhere in the room. I look up thinking what teammate is messaging me and what could they possibly want, only to realize there's a slack advert on and the notification sound came from it. Why would slack show ad mid NFL games AND put a sound that everyone associates with work? I am 🤏 close to suing slack for causing work trauma outside work hours1

Had a job advert where they legit said a requirement was following the waterfall methodology.
Nope. Nope nope nope nope.4 -

Anybody willing to contribute is very welcome!6 -
There's an app saying you which Berlin subway doors you have to use to get faster to your goal. It's really the small ideas that change everything.... (no advert, it's not my app) https://play.google.com/store/apps/...2

Hello wonderful Salesforce peeps. I need to take the Salesforce platform app builder credential
What is the best site to use as a study guide/ exam prep?
Cause honestly I've been using Trailhead and I feel it's just a big advert for Salesforce and it's so condensed it feels like a beginner course and I'm scared the test questions will be more profound than what is displayed in there.
I am a complete noob in Salesforce but I do have CRM experience, DB experience, Security experience, and programming experience.
Help a Newb2 -
For any UK Dev-ranter or anyone with knowledge of the UK TV - remade the film4 advert in pure CSS. Apologies for the quality and the frame rate in the gif!
Let me know what you think!1 -
the text in the grey-ish rectangles says "Advert"
the text in brackets above the bottom grey-ish rectangle says "(Content continues below advert)"
and yes, the thing in the middle is the actual whole content, there's no continuation below that non-advert
(it's a dictionary showing a very simple word that's just a direct synonym of another very simple one)2 -
(slightly off topic) but we had a discussion about a kinder chocolate advert yesterday. The one where "Teddy is very very not very well" I was surprised at how it split the developers. My view was that a 'very' cancels out 'not very' leaving teddy 'very well'. The alternative view was each 'very' increments the 'not very' status.
I just thought I'd throw that out there for you all!7 -
How is it that Facebook ads play right before the climax or high point of any video. Just when I'm interested to see what happens next, bam, like clock work, an ad pops up. It does not seem to be a fixed time, but more to do with the specific content of the video. Is it just me or is there some sinister algorithm at work that can detect the moment in a video the viewer will be most interested? so the viewer will have no choice but to sit through the advert to see what happens next. Or is the timing of the ad predetermined by some other means ?6

Is there a search engine indexing pages that work without JavaScript?
Why?
- I use the Lynx text-mode browser
Why else? Maybe I'm naïve:
- At least without JavaScript the advert/tracking methods will not slow load times or break the page.
- This may be a nice way to highlight websites that don't have time to join an SEO/analytics arms race.8 -
I think I found a way to audit college courses without paying for them. Find someone that is taking the courses and get paid doing their homework (for cheap/free). Make sure they take good notes and provide access to all materials. Do their homework of course. If taken to the extreme you could have a CS/CE/Math background while possibly making money on the deal. Any time you want to take a course you advert that you will do the homework. You could even wrangle the victim to record the lectures so you can reference as needed.
At the end you won't have a degree, but will be able to do everything the degree demands.
Obviously there are issues with this, one being a moral issue.4 -
Okay, so last to last week I came across Hacktoberfest's advert somewhere on the web. I was so excited to know about the cool stickers and tshirts that companies let out on doing some simple work that I posted PRs in many companies repos and here I am completing the task for devRant. Please help me get some :D
Thanks a lot!! -
FFS if you're Ajaxing some shit onto your crappy webpage, show that it's loading.
Even just "Loading..." is better than making me click on a random piece of shit on the page because the thing I wanted to click jumped down the screen a nano-second before I clicked it because you Ajaxed some cookie warning/advert above it.
The Internet is becoming unusable.1 -
Guy advertises job. Decent pay, decent benefits, all in all decent package.
Guy replies to request for further information with some shit about being able to get you 50 calls from people who will hire you but would you want to work for them... well that's why i didn't apply to 50 jobs you applied to the 1, because it sounded like you would want to work for them.
Then guy says they are paying a lot less than avertised, and the advert is basically bullshit to get him people to give his 50 opportunities shit to.2 -
Nothing more fucking annoying, than when your trying to read an article on my phone and theirs a advert after every fucking paragraph! 😤5
