Was doing some work on a server today and removing loads of stuff.
rm -rf file1
Went into another directory with very important data. Wanted to do ls -la but my fingers went:
rm -rf ./
*1 milisecond later*
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
*VIGOROUSLY CHECKS FILES*
Everything still there 😅30
JUST BECAUSE I SET UP THAT ACCOUNT FOR YOU DOES NOT MEAN I KNOW WHAT YOU CHANGED YOUR PASSWORD TO.
phew all better now3
Friend just asked me to quickly type some stuff he quoted. Fair enough, I like helping out!
"you'll have to do it on windows though"
Ah that's alright haha.
*types in word for 15 minutes, one page done*
(note: genuine word and windows 10 without bloatware etc etc)
*clicks save as*
*presses save as again*
MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT. SOMEONE PLEASE DESTROY THIS FUCKING SNAKE LICKING, DOG EATING, COCK SUCKING OPERATING SYSTEM.
I need to yell something out loud here because if I don't yell it here I'm going to yell it at a coworker, which would be unprofessional and kinda rude of me.
STOP APOLOGIZING FOR BEING A FUCKING CRETIN AND ALSO STOP BEING A FUCKING CRETIN.
Phew, thanks. That feels better.10
Fuck npm and the whole npm community!
Seriously, what a piece of completely uncontrolled cat litter!
First experience was getting malware from an npm package which I ranted about a while ago. That it can even happen is beyond my imagination.
Second experience was today when our app broke because a fucker who wrote a library doesn't understand semantic versioning.
If you're gonna publish an npm library, please do the whole fucking world a favour and learn how to version your shit correctly, so my app doesn't break! If you do BREAKING CHANGES don't change the fucking last version number you filthy piece of garbage!
Phew, that felt good 😧3
I joined a start up and worked after college hours as an intern over there. I would usually bunk my college and go to my internship. I had limited knowledge at that moment. I worked very hard over there because I wanted (still want) to gain practical knowledge.
Almost a month into it and I had to take a break from it because I had college work. Rejoined the same start up during my vacations. Worked quite a lot and learnt quite some stuff. I continued the internship after my one month vacation for another month once my college started. All this while I was not being paid, not even a little bit of allowance. But that didn't matter because I wanted to learn
Fast forward six months to November 2016. I have been placed in an MNC through my college placements. One day I get a call from this start up owner(we had become good acquaintances by then) if I was willing to work as a paid intern while I was working on the projects that the company landed (so I guess as a free-lancer) and as an unpaid intern while I was working on the company projects. I agreed. Jump to December. I have joined and started working on an Android project of this very big company.
At time point, I should inform you'll that I'm not very good at Android and that the company size is very small. Company owner plus the tech lead in one city (where I'm from) and another two full time employees in another city. Out of which one quit to start his own company apparently. The start up would primarily employ interns and provide exposure to them while getting their work done.
Back to the story. The tech lead vaguely assigns everyone their work. Everyone over here includes new interns and previous interns like me who will get paid some amount. 3-4 days into the project, the tech lead quits. The tech lead and the company owner call three of us and says that one of you will have to be a project manager for this project. And then both of them and 2 of my colleagues look at me. And I don't know what to say. I hesitate initially because it's too much responsibility but agree to it finally.
The next day I come to office and read about the project thoroughly and catch up with my colleagues about the progress. The entire day I'm panicking about what I'm going to do. In the evening, my boss tells me that we have to go for a meeting with the client for whom we are doing this project. At this moment, the shit out of me has been scared. Mostly because I don't know what the fuck am I going to do over there apart from being stupid and asking dumb questions. So we reach the client's office and wait for him. The entire time I'm thinking to myself that I'm going to drown this company by opening my mouth. Surprisingly, all the questions that I asked seemed legitimate and I asked a lot of questions. And so I didn't drown the company after all...phew!
It's been more than a week. And holy fuck! What a pain it is to manage people. Half of my time is spent on updating excel sheet about their progress, where are they stuck and what is needed. And the other half about thinking what the fuck am I doing or how am I gonna do it.
So to sum up, intern-turned-freelancer-turned-project manager who has no idea what the fuck is going on. Seems pretty crazy, don't you think.6
After months and months of slaving away, I quit my start-up job and feel completely amazing- here's what happened:
Met a classmate in grad school and he talked about starting his own company and he had full funding and etc. After graduation, moved to the new city where the job was located.
There were all these promises of us being co-workers and working on cool things and many other promises made. Soon after starting the job, most of these promises we're just smoke and mirrors.
Started working day in day out. Worked from 8am-9pm most days and worked on weekends too. Treated me like a I was a dog, talked down to me, gave unrealistic deadlines, pressured me with attitude and threats of losing my job. Hell, they thought they were the smartest person to touch the earth basically- example being that they mixed jQuery with VueJS in our Django template.....who the F*** does that. Another thing being that they had issues with me soft deleting records since they wanted them completely hard deleted and we had gotten into a giant argument about that fml.
What led to me leaving the job was that I had gotten sick one of the weeks, and I still showed up to work. Each day I was gradually getting sicker and sicker. Still tried my best to get work done. Saturday morning I get the most passive aggressive and bitchy text from my co-worker. "if you don't complete blah blah blah by Monday, we are going to have issues. Then on Monday you will work on blah blah blah". They blew the fuse with me. They would always punish me for being sick or taking a vacation. I'm not a dog, not a machine, I'm a f****** person. Went into his office when the work week started and gave my resignation on the spot and felt like it was the best decision I've ever made.
Now I just feel like a giant toxic cloud has disappeared from my life. I did walk away with so much experience and knowledge but now I just feel extremely burnt out from programming. Is this what I even wanna do anymore?
Few lessons I learned along the way:
1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
2. Free lunches aren't worth it
3. Unlimited PTO doesn't really mean unlimited- there's always stipulations
4. Start-up life isnt as cool as they say- don't take TV portrayals as the real thing
5. Your mental health is extremely important
6. It's okay to admit to yourself that you're burnt out
7. Take a break
8. STARTUPS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE
This is just my experience and what I learned, so telling my story. Phew, feels so good to get that off my chest8
Wanted to get the privacy site cms REST API ready for programming again but hadn't put it on gitlab yet.
After some nervous searching I found it again 😅
This weekend I hope to get very far :)28
Saturday. It's already an evening. Kid is asleep. Wife is doing her thing in another room. I'm on my own, I now have time do do whatever I want! So a personal project time it is!
Open up a lappy, wake up my Mint. Switch to a workspace with IntelliJ ide. There's some message popped up on a screen. With a red cross. Read the message -- your licence has expired.
Open up chrome, go to jetbrains website, log in, purchase an all-in licence page, filling in the form, last check before confirm... Wait, that ain't right. That's my college email I no longer have access to! Phew, it's a good thing I checked before submitting!
Go to account settings, update my email address, go back to licence purchase form, fill it all in, last check, and...
Email hasn't changed. What if they send something valuable to my mailbox upon lic purchase? I can't risk, it's 200€ after all...
Oh come on! Open a support ticket. But it's Saturday so I don't think I'll get a response until Monday :(
and there goes ruined a perfect evening for some coding :(
After reading here for quite some time I finally registered.
I spend 4 hours yesterday raging over myself because I wasn’t able to think enough like a machine.
I need a rubber duck...3
Absolutely hate these "moving up", "stairs of success", "we are so diverse!" stock photos all over the internet.
You feel like you are being subtle, fuck no. Unless your target audience is stupid as as fuck, this photos looks dumb and over the top. And what is up with this "diversity" all over the place? don't get me wrong, I am all for diversity. But learn how to apply it properly.
"Looks like we need a picture of a student. Oh no, we need to be diverse. Add 15 kids of 15 different ethincity in the same picture to make sure we looks diverse. Phew!"
And the animations. Holy fucking shite. Why is it that a cheap website immediatly means that your website needs to have 100 different animation in the front page.
Seriously, picture rolling from here and there. Text coming out of nowhere.Everything being squeezed and rotated. God damn it!
This is another reason I fucking hate these 1 click websites and shite like that. This fucking website was created with WiX and my God, it's a fucking nightmare.
Good news is client is recreating the website.3
I had to make Google forms but it got boring after sometime (with drag and drop). So, I ended up learning regex. Phew! That was little hard.4
Phew! I'm so happy that I can use dial-up Internet connection just by connecting my laptop to this telephone! Who would have imagined I was going to be using such advanced technology in a 4* hotel in Germany! Such an improvement from the amazing 450kb/s on the free WiFi.1
After a few hours of trying to get Antergos installed on a SD card I decided to give up and try Ubuntu instead as it usually have better out-of-the-box compatibility. And just like that, I've got it up and running on my School computer. (bios locked, can't boot from USB but SD works for some reason).
So, I'm going to run Ubuntu from a 32GB SD Card, should I upgrade to something bigger?
Edit: I survived grub update. Phew..9
now I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad Pro and an iPhone. I achieved my dream.
Apple: MAC PRO WITH DISPLAY AND STAND.16
Basically... this last part (a.k.a. "smooth animations") was useless to this exercise, but... y'know... i was interested in experimenting it.
The more I code, the more I think I should be a design guy, lol.
Anyways... jeez, I really should go... it's 2:50 AM right now @.@
Goodnight y'all... 💙
( ¯﹃ ¯๑) zzZ...1
9 am: crack knuckles, ready to start day
9:01 am: oh, that PR I sent last week hasn't been reviewed yet and I need it in mainline. Better merge latest and get someone to look over it.
9:02 am: now the test suite is broken, better fix that up before getting it reviewed.
1 pm: phew, that was a slog. Now to get on with today actual programming
1:01 pm: "hey buddy, you coming to that tech leads strategy meeting?"
5 pm: Jesus what a meeting. Now maybe I can get a little code written. I'll just fast-forward to latest...
5:01 pm: WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERES A BAD MIGRATION AND EVERYONE SHOULD AVOID USING THE LATEST VERSION WHY DIDN'T YOU REVERT THAT SHIT DO I NEED TO COME OVER THERE AND RESTRICT YOUR STUPID WINDPIPE UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND GIT *RAGE TABLEFLIP*3
*Me Scrolling through devRant smiling at posts*
Boss comes from behind
Boss : Stackoverflow is a funny place 😂
I'm taken by surprise since I should be working, and im like
Ya amatuers developers asking stupid questions.. 😂
Damn you devRant Addiction. Phew !4
Final interview for a native Android remote job via Skype
Client: Should we make a hybrid app instead?
Me inside: fucking hybrid app, hell no, the job posting was for a native mobile dev, and hybrid apps are shit
Me: We could have so much flexibility and can adjust so much better in the future when adding features when we go for a native mobile app
*phew* I almost lost my calm back there
...5 minutes ago per ssh on the productivity server...
"ok, let's delete this old test directory ..."
*types rm -r www*
....*thinking* ...*realising* ... "FUUUUUCK!!11"
*quickly types git clone gitadress"
*checks website* "phew!"1
So I work on Embedded System. While working on my project I was drinking water from bottle.
And kept it near my laptop.
Just there all my circuits were open. Connected via USB with my laptop.
And while working I tried grab the bottle and guess what?
Yeah, It fell. But thankfully it didn't touch any of my circuits. If it did!!!!
I was frozen on spot.
- Launch the new version of the system I have been refactoring for 2 years and counting, then ceremoniously burn (literally) the legacy code as well as the cluster fuck of hardware it runs on.
- Decrease my stress + bus factor by bringing another up to speed on my code & the new version (his cluster fuck now).
- Pay attention to & take better care of health, my wrists in patricular.
- Find a mentor and mentor someone else.
- Get out of crisis management mode and find the time to write tuts, experiment and live a little.
- Find & join a local dev meetup, maybe make a local dev friend.
- Book leave and actually take it, preferabbly without having to take my laptop to the beach - actually, preferabbly at least have the choice to take a offline vacation.
- Sort through the drives containing ALL the code I have ever written, migrate the usefull interesting bits to Github.
Phew, that bit of self reflection was intense! I'm adding a cron to my server to sms & email me this rant in a year to remind me what hope looks like.
Doing college homework! Computer graphics and multimedia! Yaaaay!!
Well I have to WRITE BY HAND the entire programs ( net about 500 lines, phew ) on PAPER!!
Professor: it will help u get thru exams and is a requirement for university. They don’t permit printed. It is a better habit to write ur code than print it.
Me: goes to my corner and cries listening to sad music 😭😭😭
WHHYYYYYYYY!!!!!! Why do they have to follow prehistoric rules yet!!!!!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡5
So, uh... Linux 3DS is going well. It finally boots, turns out it's the SD/MMC driver's issue, not my 3DS dying (phew), but now I have to actually FIX the driver. I thought I fixed it, but no, no, I just entirely broke it so now it doesn't even attempt to load. Fuck me... (These changes are local for now.)
Anyone wanna help?
Three hours into trying to make it fucking work... YES BROWSER I ALLOWED ALL ORIGINS WHY DONT YOU WORK 😭😭5
phew! 😨 nearly lost my shit and a days worth of work. Because I mindlessly overwrote a webdev project folder. "oh nooooooooo! how I'm gonna justify that to my boss!?"
Thankfully VS Code could undo that on those files i had open.2
Me: Ah, I need to delete /path/to\ some/directory
... starts typing
rm -rf /path/to
finger slips, touch "Enter" too hard for my comfort, heart skips a beat, but nothing is happening. Phew. I dodged a bullet.
I'll never ever learn this lesson.2
Phew, finally got my new build up and running.
Gigabyte GA-A350 Gaming 3
Ryzen 5 1600x
Corsair Hydro H60
G.Skill Ripjaws v seris 16gb ddr 4 3200
Thermaltake Core P3
unknown ssd main, 1tb secondary
Gtx 670 (upgrading)
550w psu (upgrading)
Took quite a bit of profanity to get it setup, but it was well worth it. Everything runs smooth and I will be happy until my next meltdown when I go to work.4
Today was a rather funny day in school. School starts for me at 13:40 because our timetable planners are so qualified for this job.
First 2hrs: Physics, fine its good
Second 2hrs: Discrete Maths (however you want to call it)
Goal is to write a text (30 pages, 10, etc all those standard settings). Teacher prefers Latex over word, but we can do it in word if we want. We could choose a topic, I took primes because it looked the best. I decided to use latex because I'm a fetishist and it simply looks better in the end. A classmate was arguing with our teacher about ides: texmaker vs kile. And I'm like "I use vim". So my teacher is like kk
Later that class, when we actually started doing stuff I started the ssh session to my server because I don't know any good c++ compilers for win and I'm too lazy to get a portable version of cygwin (or whatever its called). So in my server I open vim and start coding my tool for Fermat Primes (Fermatsche Primzahlen, too lazy to actually translate). And this teacher seriously is the best teacher I ever met in my life. Usually teachers are like " dude r u hakin' the school server?" and I'm like bruh its just vim and I'm doing it this way because I cannot code on your PC coz I can't install a compiler. And this teacher is like "oh hey you actually use vi, all cool kids used it in 2000. I first though u were kidding and stuff..." And we continued talking about more of stuff like that and I have to say that this is the first teacher that actually understands me. Phew
Now I'm going to continue writing my 30 pages piece of trash latex doc and hope it'll end good1
Small rant for today: why in God's name do some people feel the need to ignore the conventions of the frameworks THEY chose to use for theyr projects, and start just throwing stuff randomly around the whole codebase?
Phew...all better now :)1
Heyo, it's me. That fool who always says shit about unity.(:
So.. i just got my first real hands-on down, and phew, i gotta say.. I overestimated that heap of bullshit.
It's not like there are basic concepts of gamedev, framebased ticking and stuff like that since before the fucking gameboy - nope - let's do shit different. More ... Shit. First, we invent something new. Lets call it "prefab". None of these fuckers is going to know what that shit is.
What next.. oh the new-keyword. That's bullshit, all languages use it. Lets make Instanciate(). That's the stuff.
On we go, scenes. Most shit is statically created beforehand and used by scripts glued to stuff. Hell that so neat actually. Creating materials beforehand and then we can just load em!(:
NOPE. yo bro your Material where u used one of those loading-methods is null. We ain't telling you whats wrong, cus you know.. Load() returning null is like completely normal, why throwing an exception?
Oh and btw, it needs to be in ./Resources/, but it wont make any difference.
So now you want to google your problem, eh? Forget it. The Forums only answer on stuff like "how to add 2 numbers in unity" and the guide shows you how you did it, but they say it works that way.
Dude holy shit, of course this is a buhuuu i don't know how to do shit rant because i feel like good 8-10 years of dev experience collected while not doing homework for school were for fucking nothing.:b
And i have to use it.
Subjective Opinion: Unity was made by crackheads.7
Phew.....I always freak out when i think of launching an app on playstore. It feels like a damn big thing! Making multiple keys, app bundles, signing, writing special descriptions, creating good looking screenshots/vids, the launch tracks.... A hell lot of work.
But recently i gathered up the courage to launch my first app in 2 years: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...
I know its simple, nd too late, but still, would like to know your thoughts on this4
So while talking always nice about Linux (today as well on devrant), my laptop wouldn't boot. I realised the battery was drained out as i had put it to sleep.
Now when i switch it on the light just blinked and nothing happened. After sometime when the battery was a bit charged and i had tried to hard reset the laptop, still wouldn't boot.
An hour later it was stuck at the bios screen asking me what I'd like to do- boot normally or repair. Anything I clicked it'll reboot and get back to that screen.
I realised after sometime that it was the RAM that was being the pain. So got a bootable usb to check the RAM. Post that it booted without new installation. Phew...
Shotwell Image Viewer acts like those newly joined interns that are afraid to screw something up.
Me: Opens image , Crops, Save
Shotwell : Ok, Wanna save this?
Me: Ok, save it , I already did though
Shotwell : Ok, Saved
*Me : Closes shotwell*
Shotwell : Don't you wanna save this?
Me : I did! Please save again if you want to!
Shotwell : Ok , Phew..4
You know that feel where you're looking for a solution and don't find one. And go down this rabbit hole of self loathing? And everything is sad and depressing. You can't think straight. You feel like an idiot. You kinda don't know/ forget things you knew a couple days earlier.
Well, that ended yesterday. For now.2
interviewed a guy who claims to work in MVC with Java, dude doesn't even know object relational model. calls himself a full stack developer
Phew.. My exams are now over (almost...next in 23 days). Now I can continue development. I'm so happy today. But tired too. It feels good coming back here.6
There was a big hairy ball of SW mud from another project that a poor coworker had to "reuse". Only that it was impossible because there was no documentation, shit was partly auto-generated with mysterious Excel tables, and the actual code was just as bad. No APIs and nothing, just hacking shit into globals, several nested state machines that were overriding each other's states, and with global side effects. WTF.
Two devs took a look at it - minimum 8 weeks. Schedule was some days, and PM insisted that it was "already working". But the worst thing was that the dev in charge had been looking for another job anyway and quit, so the whole clusterfuck suddenly was on my desk.
The code was so awful that I could only bear it with both eyes closed, so I instead read the spec of this project closely. Turned out that it didn't actually demand this feature, only a small subset of what the ball of mud was supposed to achieve - which I was able to implement from scratch within a day, plus another one for documentation. Phew.
The positive side of EnvVars...
So a couple of weeks ago I moved all api keys and db passwords to environmental variables on the server so that I didn't have to keep worrying if I'm live in my test environment.
Earlier I shat myself after an apt-get upgrade broke php and apache somehow decided it's a great idea to serve all .php files as plain text. I was super relieved to find no confidential information (apart from logic) was made public.
I'm glad I never had a HR round during my interview, no "where do you see yourself in 5 years?", blah blah. Phew!1
So, this is a place I can possibly get some feedback on this and have never really been able to explain it to anyone because they lack the knowledge. Hopefully there are some programmer philosophers/psychologist here.
Thought - you know? That thing we do every day? The main component that we use to communicate?
I find I think in OO, ringed holons of sorts. There is a subject, and various subjects within that subject. Say colors that link to ranges of wavelengths.
And I see quite often, especially when arguing or mad, that this logical connection breaks down in other people. e.g. you will say you dont like a specific flower, and then all of a sudden someone assumes you hate flowers. Or even bigger leaps in logic, assumes you hate nature. Jumps up a OO class or two.
Anyone else find the OO model of categorizing things in their mind? Anyone else notice people can't prioritize and organize 'data' into a model that makes sense and agrees with itself?
It pisses me off to no end when people get mad because they can't keep topics together, or make arguments up in their head because they can't coherently remember and link what they just input. Worse yet, when they can't understand how I link things together and me explaining ~this~ concept. How they are incapable of grasping similar objects similarities but are able to go, "You said something is hostile? I'm using that word now because I heard it, and now bananas are hostile because you used a banana as an example for something with a peel while explaining layers of objects." (Shit example, just a "wtf" in logic leaping)
end rant. if it doesn't make sense, sry not sry. if someone gets it. phew
Last rant update:
I won't have to take a leave after all and won't have to force myself to a wasted day full of useless awkward interactions or roaming around in a park.
The days were going fine, the projects were going good. I was a happy man, until I decided to F**** use F**cking moth****er VISUAL F*ing STUDIO to do my computer vision projects, F*k*ing cannot even compile Hello world programme.
F*** you Microsoft f**ing fuc**ERS.
Phew... good to have it out of system. So guys any other suggestions in place of visual studio ?8
*phew* 14 hours straight at the office. I was getting giddy towards the end. So much fun to bingework once in a while. ToDo lists are looking pretty empty right now :) ...maybe just chill tomorrow and go talk to people.
So we want to propose an algorithm that lets the system choose available subjects for the student to enroll the semester. The problem now is, if they will let me choose what platform... I'd use html/js to have an interactive and reliable system. We are going to use localhost to lessen the budget.. And the saddest part is It's all in my imagination.. I couldnt start working on it as im lazing around doing nothing.2
Azure, great development slots! Must have, now I can have developer, staging and production. The greatest no downtime when swapping a new server in....
Everything crashes? WTF?
OKAY, so swapping to a service that authenticates users makes the authentication part crash :/
Phew development slots ROLL BACK...
No the entire service was broken. Rolling back, all non authenticating controllers work, but the authentication never happens, so server is working, but the users cant use it. Fuck!
Delete everything. Recreate. The setting persists. WTF. Delete again, recreate, reinitialize, republish, it works as it should when tested phew.
Creating new service experiencing cant replicate. Hmm, okay must have been a glitch. Next, update, YEAH swap, no downtime!!!
*EXPLOSION* ..... RINSE AND REPEAT:/
Finally completed the stupid boring never-ending android project and sent it to client. Phew! Now I can work on the other iOS app which I like. Yum.4
Once I was waiting on a client to ok some minor spelling corrections in an app. I don't know what I was thinking but I pushed it to the store without thinking.
I told my manager, and I was so annoyed at myself. I was trying so hard to get into a senior role and I was feeling super terrible. I actually requested a letter of warning, but my manager just laughed and refused. PHEW!
Installed ros and everything on NVidia board. Dd on to SD card and I have a bootable device.
Fiddle with boot config - fuck yeah.
I then just flash the new board.
Everything crashes FUCK. off and on again... Come on! phew
Ahhh but the flash should work, hmm choose another partition.
Everything is done YES I AM A HACKER. Unplug sd card, off and on again.
No response killed the bootloader, fuck me...
When life gives u lemons, you make the lemonade..
Phew, lemonade is too mainstream lets make lemonshake, not a lemonade !!!3
Got too used to zshell. Deleted some static assets and realised I wasn't in the correct directory. Almost deleted important user assets.1
Can you see that title of my resolved task properly? you damned click tester!!!! Just don't reopen my task
Phew... thanks devRant. You always here.
