I added a “shake-to-snow” hidden feature to an iOS app that worked only on December 25th. You’d shake your iPhone or iPad and the entire screen would start snowing for 10 seconds.7
Parents:why is my iPad so slow?
Me: It's old (1st gen that came out in 2010)
P:well just clean it up and make it go faster
M:Theres nothing to clean... Theres only a browser app and solitaire....
P: well just fix it so it's faster
M:....... *turns it off and on again*
M: All fixed2
Friend: Can you teach me to code??
Me: Hell yes, bout time you came to your senses.
Friend pulls out iPad: Okay, lesson one!
Me: Did you actually just pull out an iPad? Get a fucking computer or laptop!9
Managing an app in Canada, came back home to Thailand to visit my parents.
No deployments while you're gone, just bug fixes, boss said.
Landed at 3am, "hey I know we only support desktop but we got new customers only on iPad, make it responsive in a day and deploy." Wtf.
Haven't even seen my parents. In Starbucks.15
Dear tech YouTubers, fucking stop trying to justify the iPad pro as an actual pro device that can replace a laptop for everyone...
Yes you can make music, yes you can draw and yes you can watch content...
Can you have multiple windows?
Can you write code and natively compile?
Can I use a mouse?
Can I power multiple displays with seperate apps?
Yes it's powerful but it's still an iPad, just because you made a bigger screenee phone doesn't mean you can claim it as a full PC replacement... Cunts -,-
(Would like to point this out mostly to Johnathan Morrison for that video showing off a single person using the iPad for a singular purpose, pissed me off more than anything!)19
- Take a course called "Mobile Application Development"
- Teacher is new and is thus lost on how things work because there is no formal training for them
- Teacher only knows Objective-C so that's all we're allowed to use
- Nobody owns a Mac and I think one or two people had an iPhone/iPad
- Only 4 public Mac computers are available to the school
- One to two people are on them frequently, limiting our time on them as well
- Not a part of the schools normal imaging and updating system, so we get to do it ourselves, which takes up like a week or two of classes (4 classes)
- This includes installing XCode and getting Apple IDs
- No real instructions are given besides "implement the APIs for Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps into an app"
- Being an ass, for the final day instead of showing off the app we made I made a PowerPoint of my dislike of Objective-C and various struggles I ran into and how I decided not to make the app at all.
- shrug emoji4
5 screens... 3 monitors, main screen, app connecting my iPad Pro screen. now I can be productive and distracted without having to change tabs...15
Multiple friens asked if I could help someone with her "laptop".
Me: so I hear that you have problems with your laptop?
She: oh yea let me get my laptop.
A minute later she comes back with an iPad mini.
She: I cant get this app to work!
How can they all call that a laptop! *facepalm*9
Started this machine for the first time after 18 years!!
IBM R51 (32 bit single core Pentium M), 1gb RAM, 40gb old mechanical hdd.
Installed Ubuntu 12 (32 bit from old iso) , installed some educational software to teach mouse n keyboard (my daughter is good in touchscreen on ipad), she is getting hang of mouse so quick, amazed how fast kids learn, wish I could be so fast too.15
Oh my word, shut up everyone about the ESC key. In interface design do you keep something around that 1% of your user base uses, or do you make something better? It's not even gone. It's on the touch bar for fricks sake.
And while we're talking about it, stop calling Apple so innovative. Innovation at Apple died with Steve Jobs. "We developed this awesome new iPad Pro!" it's just a bigger iPad with the same stupid limitations of all iPads. If you want a real portable work tablet, go buy a Surface. "We added a touch bar to the MacBook Pro!" some manufacturers of Windows laptops have had that thing for years!

My mom has a new IPad.
it took my mother and sister 4 hours to make an apple ID.
I offered to help, but they said they wanted to do it themselves
So, i opened my sister's laptop and opened google, i googled: "How to setup an apple ID". left the laptop near them, and hoped they notice it, and they did.7
A story about an Android TVbox which decided to become an iPad
Several years ago we've bought an android tv-box.
It served me and my family well for several years.
Specs are not that important in this story, but there they are:
Amlogic quadcore 1.4HGz
This device served us well - online TV, browsing, music, file sharing and so on. But recently cheap Chinese memory deciteed to take a break and damaged ROM. Because of that device won't boot. The only option was to take it apart and "short circuit" certain legs on memory chip and make it boot from SD card and install new firmware. After such operations tv-box worked well again.
Hoverer, memory glitched again and again and this algorithm was repeated for several months.
But that is not what is this story about.
One day memory went completely crazy and there was no way to install new firmware on it. It just hanged on install. (BTW, it was official firmware for this device)
But after countless attempts it finally worked! It installed the firmware and booted into launcher and connected to WiFi!
But now comes the most interesting part.
It was not android anymore.
It decided to became an iPad.
My dad logged in to his Google account via tv-box and got mail that someboby connected from our IP via iPad (we don't have an iPad) and using safari browser! Stock browser is not safari browser.....
"Ok, nvm, crazy glitch." - we thought.
But preinstalled play marked wont launch. Because he told us, that we're trying to connect from iPad.
And Google chrome page suggested to download chrome for iPad
And everything was acting like it is an iPad.
OK, downloaded iTunes, why not??? ._.
Tried to install elixir for android via apk from flash, but then memory glitched one more time, everything went black and tv-box had damaged ROM again...
After that we decided to not torment it anymore...
That's it. Poor Android TVbox that all his life dreamed to become an iPad. Rest in peace.2
WWDC was not about developers this year. It was a conference call with shareholders and investors. No bold moves, just several consecutive "this product will no longer suck" and "look at what you can do now, big companies" announcements.
watchOS will work now (it's too slow ATM). tvOS will just be less cumbersome. macOS still lagging behind (I mean, I already have great third party apps that clean my hard drive, but thank you for solving a problem I didn't need fixing). iOS 10 is simply about messages (it's not going to make me ditch Telegram, because it doesn't have an Android client, regardless of how large you make emoticons appear on screen). Apple Music will still suck, especially if you have more than one Apple ID. And Apple Maps will continue to be useless outside of the US.
Where did the bold moves go? Where's the "we're breaking up iTunes into several distinct apps that serve their purposes really well"? (Guess iTunes is too valuable a trademark...) Where is the "we will end the WKView vs UIView vs NSView nonsense"? (You know, OOP is about creating classes, which are abstractions and whose instances deal with the particularities of their environment; a View is a View, regardless of where they live; an instance of a View should care about being on a watch or on a phone, not the developer.) Where is the "we love indie developers and will help you"? They showed off a lot of integration with well established apps, that don't really need to stand out any more. They showed that video of "normal people" who have developed apps, but no one knows about them! And then they changed the AppStore so you can pay to advertise your app, but who has the means to do that? Indie devs are surely on a tight budget, so who's that helping again?
For me, this WWDC was sugar coated with a "we love you developers" BS, but was a business statement to large companies ("see what you can do now Uber, Lyft, WeChat, WhatsApp, Doordash, all the P2P payment apps, ESPN, WSJ and so on?"). It's already a known fact that the bulk of the AppStore revenue goes to the top 1% apps. And what's the point of having tvOS be open to developers if it is very unlikely I'll ever develop anything for it unless I work at CBS?
It's great that they want to make it easier for kids to learn Swift. But there's very little point in that, if those kids' apps aren't going to be used and are simply going to make the "we have 2 million apps on the AppStore" announcement look shinier for shareholders. Without a strong indie community, the Swift Playgrounds app for the iPad is just manufacturing workers for large corporations.
And without a strong indie community, things get tougher for indie clients as well. Who will have the money (and therefore the time) to implement all those integrations in order to even dream about competing with heavily funded apps?
Yeah... So thanks, Apple, but no thanks.16
A day before the deadline.
Project manager decides that we are ready to publish the same app with the iPad version too. Without asking dev team.
+Yep, sure. What could go wrong?
I'll keep you posted.2
Third time my Macbook failed to Boot up...
It's time to burn it, but wait... lets take backup.
Ironically, this rant is coming from an Apple user.
(Image clicked and edited on iPad)46
My relatives: "Can you fix my computer/ipad/etc..."
Me: "Sure why not. I'l take a look when I have the time"
Lesson: Don't be so arrogant.2
WWDC was last night. Joined my companies "iOS" slack channel this morning expecting to see lots of activity about SwiftUI, Combine, Federated Login, New iPad updates ... but no. The only comment
"Does anyone else feel like the event artwork is lazy and uninspired?"
... I am just fundamentally in the wrong company12
I wrote some simple rules so everyone with an iPhone, iPad or OSX device that is visiting my site is redirected to https://stallman.org/apple.html31
My first actual rant on devRant:
Fuck corporate companies. Fuck agile development.
In the last 8 months I’ve been with this company, I’ve 1) made the app layout (which was super fucked) compatible with iPad. 2) reduced the apps size by 1/3 of the original size. 3) improved memory usage by double the efficiency, nearly eliminated all memory leaks. 4) gotten employee of the quarter for some of the above mentioned.
After all of this I got a talking to from product manager that “he knows I am a good developer but needs more consistency” after I spent a sprint on one story trying to consolidate front end validation logic and make a “validatableTextField” actually do some validation. So much for the MVVM you promised me.
Also, was promised I’d get some experience with Android, and with a team of 8 devs 6 of which have droid backgrounds and other two are juniors, guess whose only even built the droid project once in 8 months? You guessed it. This company has drained me of all of my knowledge, went against most of its promises to me, and values pushing features to the point of adding tech debt faster than I can solve it.
Unfortunately my personal life relies on this job or I’d quit right away. But you bet your ass I’m passively looking for something and I can’t wait till I get a job offer and quit on these ungrateful hypocrites.5
long && scam && rant?
At my parent's: phone rings..
Me: hi this is XYZ (in German)
He: hi this is ABC from Microsoft tecnical suport (strong Indian accent, sorry toall Indian devs who might feel offended, no intention)
Me: hi... (I'm learning for my exams and don't have a VM with Windows installed currently, so no time to "play")
He: we got some worrying data from your Windows computer. You might have a virus and we need to run a few tests to verfy it. Do you know what that is?
Me: yeah, a scam.
He: sorry, sir I didn't understand you, could you repeat?
Me: yeah, I know what " this" is. It's a scam, and we only deploy Linux here. (lie, we have Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as an iPhone, iPad and Android devices in the house, guess who is "support"...) But good luck with your next call.
He: (kind of friendly) oh. I see. Well have a nice day too.8
At a mobile developer desk:
- 1 PC
- 1 Mac (for iOS Build)
- 2 Android phones and one tablet
- iPhone, iPad
- a lot of cables, too many of them7
Anytime I have to deploy to iOS store. Part of the stack includes human review... Need I say more?
If I had a dollar for every fucking time they ignored our flagging to not put it on iPad, and returned with their review 2-3 days later saying:
"App UI did not run on iPad resolution cleanly."
Then having to submit an appeal and wait 2-3 more days...10
Dear Apple, fuck you for the iPad pro, it is probably the hardest device to do web design in mind.
It is at that point where it's screen is technically declared laptop size but just too big for being declared tablet...
Longest Rant I've written so far.
How to manage a school (by out school director):
Did this student do something spezial to emphasize the school?
-No: Ignore him
-Yes: Did the student achieve this with the help of this schools staff?
-No: Take all the credit
-Yes: Hahaha, just a joke, nobody receives help from the school. Goto -No
Q: Should this class get the 5 day trip, they've been waiting for the whole year?
Q: But they don't even participate in other trips just to go there.
(Good thing she did not have the last word there)
Does the school director need this one week trip to india, just to talk once about stuff, you can talk about via email, to a sponsor?
D: "Of course I deserve it"
D: "We need faster internet in this school"
Network admins: "But it won't be of any use, if the network can't handle it. We'll need better pcs (and network conponents) on top of that"
D: "No, bot enough money available for that one." *browses email with IPad paid by school money*
Teacher: "I want to realize project xy with the students. We'll need around 1200€ (for 20 people)."
D: "Can place xy at our school to as advertise?"
T: "No, but it's be a valuable le-"
D: "600 at most."
(Again denied by people who aren't fcking assholes. We got 1500€, so 300€ per group)
D: So what makes you think you can teach informatics in this school"
Applicant: "Well, I'm friends with one of your teacher here. We went to university together, where I learn't nothing about informatics and I don't even understand the principles of this subject"
D: "Close enough. Hired, you can teach them all the theory stuffy. You don't have to prepare that yourself another teacher has done so. Just read it from his documents."
*In class with the mentioned teacher talking about Threads*
*Le wild code appears*
System.out.println ("Thread working...");
System.out.println ("Thread terminated");
T: "... and most importantly, when you have done all the work be sure to terminate the thread with 'System.out.println ("Thread terminated");'"
Should this teacher be allowed to participate in this seminar about burnouts?
D: "No, I can't afford paying the supplenze."
Staff: "We need to talk with the director about this."
S: "Not in her office. The cafeteria maybe"
*Not in the cafeteria either*
S: "Seems like she didn't come to achool today. Let's try tomorrow"
(^ Stuff that happens almost daily. Screw semicolons. I see her only once a month at most)
*Student send 5000 emails by accident* (Shit happens 😂😅😂😅)
D: "You gonna work here for a full afternoon"
*Student arrives for his punishment*
Staff: "Good that you're here. Do this real quick."
*10 min. Later*
Staff: "Well, we have no more work to give you, so you might as well leave"
DONE!!! Good job coming so far.
Our school is supposed to be the best, but internally it's one big meme.4
Translation: Your Computer can have internet access without Wi-Fi, if your computer is a iPad Pro.
Video explains this cutting edge technology named "LTE".
Much innovative, very computer7
Just had my first demo here. The resolution of the screen was set at 150% screwing more up then i hoped for.
I didn't dare to show the iPad version. I had seen enough bugs in those 10 minutes.
Don't put this developer in the center of attention. Please.3
Customer: Do you need my computer password?
Me: Yes, I do. Why don't you write it down for me? *fills out work order form while she writes down her password*
Customer: Here you go *slides me sticky note with password on it*
Me: *usual spiel about computer repair stuff*
Me: *to Coworker* So this lady's password is "AmishForLife* (modified for security purposes).
Coworker: On her iPad?!
Me: And her computer, yes
Me: I wonder how well that's working out for her...

Apple's marketing department are just dictionary junkies.
Have you guys read some of the latest Apple quotes for their products? You know, the ones where you visit the page and there's some large bold text summarising the product? Here's a few:
HomePod: "The new sound of home."
If you talk over my Spotify music YOU WILL BECOME THE NEW SOUND OF MY SHED.
iPhone X: "Say hello to the future."
E.Musk put a Tesla in space. Also the future can crash with a single character.
MacOS: "Your Mac. Elevated."
If you fly away I WILL use you as birthday balloon.
iPad Pro: "Anything you can do, you can do better."
SOONER OR LATER *Comment what you would put here*
But I mean hey. It sells right.
Reading it back maybe I'm just blind hating.12
I wish the apple review team shove them white polished apples up their fucking asses
A problem solved over a month ago... Ipv6 works it's tested.
Now you come back with a very specific old iPad on a very specific os and say it doesn't work !?
The topping on this shit (apple) pie? They sent me a screenshot of the issue.
It's a screenshot of the fucking login page. I know what the fucking thing looks like you assholes.
Uploaded app to AppStore for review by the farmers...
Got a message three weeks later that I need to upload more screenshots for iPad Pro 3rd Generation
Uploaded the new screenshot, and resubmitted the app.
Got a message immediately stating my binary is invalid: ITMS-90783: Missing bundle display name
You motherfuckers have been holding to my binary for three weeks. How the fuck did you accept it in the first place if the Display Name was missing, you filthy swines?
Sooo... my 4 and a half-ish year old iPad (gen 3) has survived for over a 1000 hours on one charge!
And still going strong!9
Apple are annoyingly out of touch, has anyone seen the iPad Pro advert? They run the ad where a kid asks 'What is a computer?' and it boils my blood because a tablet is basically a computer. I get the point they're trying to make but assuming that 'a post-PC world is closer than you think' is a bit far fetched.
I mean are they planning on discontinuing the iMac? I don't think so. Annoying and smug ad for their touch screen computer.4
Apparently because someone works in IT they can hack an IPad.
Once i figure out the secret of hacking Apple devices i will obviously share it with you.2
So here's my setup.
Minimalist and clean, the only environment I can work in.
My laptop spends way more time at home now-a-days since I bought the iPad Pro 12.9 2017... It's just so practical to take to lectures.
As for my desktop... well my keyboard definitely needs an upgrade... Any suggestions on a good keyboard?
My alcohol shrine, keeps me sane 😂😍. Let's see your setups.12
That moment when a new client asks for help with their iPad and you ask them what model it is. "It's an Insignia brand iPad," they say proudly.
Let that sink in. It's a few layers.
Then they want you to set up 2 laptops, a TV and this unknown tablet so that they can talk to each other, with an as-on-tv fake diamond ring as payment.
Let that sink in.
If you want me, I'll be hiding under the couch.2
Okay so someone asked me to explain difference between an iPad & PC & i did it something like this:
If you provide a kid with a condom and a balloon, which would he value more?
Now give the same set to a mature adult, which would he value more?
We know which one serves the greater purpose right? 😝9
Sooooo I am not a fanboy. I do have my reservations when it comes to technology and whatever, but I live and let live and normally don't shit on stuff as long as it does not affect me or has any reasonable opportunity to affect others.
But my lead developer does, highly opinionated dude for a lot of shit (he ain't really my lead dev anymore in the sense of him being over me, i actually got promoted to a different department but have to continue working with him) and as such we sometimes go on some huuuuge rants regarding tech. With me, shit is simple man, you tell me you like something and I'll dig it, even if i don't necessarily dig it....i am pretty chill like that...ya dig?
Well the other day he was talking about how tvs like mine were too small for him, mine is a 55 inch, i don't think its small, it doesn't inconvenience me in any way really. But to his royal blindness shit is small.
I mentioned that I watch most of my shit lying down on my ipad pro, to were he starts talking massive amounts of shit about apple.
Now, as a previously hired and annoyed mobile developer, ios has a special place in my heart in which my only complaint about the platform was how xcode would fuck up from time to time. The languages were glorious(Obj C and swift) the cocoa apis were amazing(between ios and mac desktop....oooh la la) and the care that the apple store takes in not letting every other add infested garbage app to play a part in their store, the gloriousness of having your data secured as well as havinf applications compiled into the actual fucking operating system REALLY TOUCHES HOME WITH ME. ITS COOL IF IT AIN'T YOU, I AM TALKING ABOUT ME.
Oh. And ipads are smooth as fuck. This was something that I had to mention when he said that anything that I could do with my 1000+ dllr ipad could be done with his samsung table. Normally, I would be like "cool man" but diz doode insisted on making an android vs ios argument.
He insisted on me trying on his tablet. Boy it was the jankiest, laggiest shit I had laid hands on.......just like any other underpowered Android device. Don't get me wrong, my s9 works fucking amazing, but why in the name of heavens would you make an argument against a tablet whilst simultaneously using a piece of shit that doesn't even work properly? Are people really that delusional in their arguments that they would really be that wrong while still insisting on being right?13
Why the fuck does Apple hate developers so much? I just want to test and play around a bit. Why do I have to own a fucking Mac? Why do I need to pay 99$ a year just to install a debug build on my own device?! It's literally impossible to get into ios development without being rich or having some kind of plan for revenue...
Testing my app on Android:
Install Android studio -> plug in phone -> run code in Android Studio or simply install the resulting apk on your phone.
Trying to test my app on my iPad:
Google how to build app for iPad -> reading that you have to own a Mac to run xcode when you want to build Code for iOS -> searching for a workaround -> find a way to build my app online -> setting the tool and building it -> Trying out 5 different tools to sideload the app, no one works -> finding out that you need a developer account to sign the app for testing purposes on MY OWN DEVICE. I really would appreciate it if I would be able to install personal stuff for testing and LEARNING without being forced into insolvency. Why are people putting up with this kind of bullshit?18
The company bought an iPad so I can test my work on a real device, but I can’t use it because the latest iPadOS beta release isn’t compatible with the latest Xcode 11 beta release 😒2
I'm kind of a perfectionist, which is one of the reasons why I don't post here very often.
I think that my posts have to be the most hilarious or creative ones to even be bothered to be read by anyone.
Now.. I'm kind of not sober, so I'll just write some idéas, jokes and rants in notes on my iPad.. Sleep, and get drunk again tomorrow and maybe post them...
Or maybe just delete this post and be ashamed tomorrow?
I at least posted this under the "Joke/Meme" tag so that people won't be offended, hopefully, by this "none-rant".5
God, the iPhone 11 pro's triple cameras ARE SO UGLY. OnePlus 7 has three back cameras and it's not ugly, so it can be done! It's just so, so fucking ugly. It looks like where you might plug in a high voltage power cable or something. And of course it still has a notch. That's two design failures in one expensive phone. No thanks!
(From owner of iPad Pro - not an Apple hater!)4
now I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad Pro and an iPhone. I achieved my dream.
Apple: MAC PRO WITH DISPLAY AND STAND.16
Got an [IMPORTANT] email today from <some third party company> saying they discovered a problem with their software and were working on it with high prority. Problem description made my day: "<some third party company> would like to inform you that offline users using iPad may not be able to synch due to technical reasons". - wait what?!1
Apple... Isn't it obvious?
They once built machines and software that were tested and ready for customers but they went into a direction where saving money and generating more income has the highest priority.
The more recent the version (hard- and software) the more unstable it became. On top of that the crap they produce gets more expensive each iteration. I do own a 2015 MB Pro, that's it. I used to own:
- iPhone X
- MB Pro 2017
- Apple Watch
- Apple TV
- iPad Pro
... All at the same time ... But I sold everything and switched (back) to Android and Linux and no tablet at all. The MB Pro I own is just my travel notebook because of battery life.
I'm very disappointed of Apple's strategical direction and that's why I'm boycotting it as good as I can.20
Rant! I'm the only developer working in the company and everybody always comes to me and say, oh you are the IT guy can you fix my iPad?
F**$ no I can't... Stupid iPads..2
When I told my mother I wanted to become a software dev, she went surprised but supported me to reach my goals. That's what family does. I'll always be thankful to her. (My family is quite short actually).
One year later, with my first salary I bought her a brand new iPad. 💕
If you don't have your family support, just do it. Do whatever makes you happy and complete!5
i submitted my first app to the app store yesterday. i built it with flutter, and it's already on the play store.
for some reason - i probably created the app wrong - the app store connect/portal needed screenshots of my app running on an ipad pro. now i don't have an ipad pro, and i can't use an emulator because i don't have a mac for that matter (i have been using codemagic.io for builds). i called friends - they don't have any ipads.
what did i do?
i turned my phone sideways and scaled it to the ipad pro resolution.
it is currently "in review"
🙏let's hope this works7
Just took back over my desk shared with my partner, Ukrainian tchotchkes are hers, raspberry pi and The Good Wife playing on the iPad are mine 😂3
*Explaining over the phone how to connect an iPad to the internet
Me: "Select the wifi network and put the password in"
Them: "It says here something about the IP Address - is that the postcode?"
Annoys me so much how obviously lazy my department has been with one of its products. We have an iPad app that does document management and eForms and stuff. Its not perfect but not the worst. Then they decide they need to build an app to handle a specific kind of eForm. They just went "well this app already does eForms so lets just adapt it".
Worst. Decision. Ever.
the app is simply a branch off the original app. despite being a completely different product which isnt even concerned with the same business objects. it has been hacked until it does what it needs to. And i have to somehow maintain this trainwreck.
As a result we have a branch in our main Git repo that contains a completely different product, which is basically an iOS wrapper for an HTML eForm with ~5000 lines of jQuery to further hack on the functionality that the eForm provides.
And they wonder why iOS developers have been leaving and some keep threatening to leave. Even the Delivery Manager wants us to just do what is needed and get it out the door and never look at it again. How are we supposed to care when thats the attitude of the people who are supposed to be invested in it. Im surprised the client hasnt told us to get lost the app is so hideously broken and unmaintainable. Performing an action on the form can break a completely unrelated section somewhere else. We have lost control.
And they just keep adding more scope, ignoring our concerns cos hey its too late to just start changing the whole approach of the solution.
Trying to communicate with a client's former "web guy" to transfer the clients domain back to my client so I can make changes to the design and make it mobile friendly.
He emails me "it's on Wordpress, so it's already responsive"
Go to double check on iPad and my phone. design is unresponsive...
So i was talking to my client the other day and this is what happened....
Me: So what features do you want in the Progress Tracker in the app.
Client: (takes his IPAD out and opens the FitBit app) This is a really nice progress tracker.
Me: Alright so what features would you like in Progress Tracker, eg: would you maybe like them to check in everyday making sure that they have done exercise or something.
Client: *Shows me his goal in steps (which was 10,000 if anyone was wondering) and shows me other features of the app and not telling me what to do in his own one* These look nice.
Me: Alright so do you want a Step Tracker, Calories Tracker etc.
Client: Nooooo, I want other things.
Me: Ok lets get discussing what are these "other things"
Client: *Continues to show me the FitBit app*
WTF Apple!? Yet another update? I use the iPad mainly to catch up on some light reading while doing a number two. But as of late, I've spend more time watching that line grow under your logo. I blame you for my haemorrhoids, you stupid piece of fruit!!1
Inspired by @NoMad. My philosophy is that technology is a means to and ends. We’re a tool oriented species. As it relates to software and hardware, they should be your means to achieve your ends without you needing to think. Think of riding a bicycle or driving a car. You aren’t particularly conscious of them - you just adjust input based on heuristics and reflex - while your doing the activity.
For a long time Software has been horrendously bad at this. There is almost always some setup involved; you need to front-load a plan to get to your ends. Funny enough we’re in the good days now. In the early days of GUI you did have to switch modes to achieve different things until input peripherals got better.
I’ve been using windows from 95 and to this day, though it’s gotten better it’s not trivial to setup an all in one printer and scan a document - just yesterday I had to walk my mother through it and she’s somewhat proficient. Also when things break it’s usually nightmare to fix, which is why fresh installing it periodically is s meme to this day. MS still goes to great lengths with their UI so that most people can still get most of their daily stuff done without a manual.
I started Linux in University when I was offered an intro course on the shell. I’ve been using it professionally ever since. While it’s good at making you feel powerful, it requires intricate knowledge to achieve most things. Things almost never go smoothly no matter how much practice you have, especially if you need to compile tools from source. It also has very little in the ways of safe guards to prevent you from hurting yourself. Sure you might be able to fix it if you press harder but it’s less stress to just fresh install. There is also nothing, NOTHING more frustrating than following documentation to the T and it just doesn’t work! It is my day job to help companies with exactly this. Can’t really give an honest impression of the GUI ux as the distros have varying schools of thoughts with their desktop environments. Even The popular one Ubuntu did weird things for a while. In my humble opinion, *nix is better at powering the internet than being a home computer your grandma can use.
Now after being in the thick of things, priorities change and you really just want to get things done. In 2015 I made the choice to go Mac. It has been one of my more interesting experiences. Honestly, I wish more distros would adopt its philosophy. Elementary only adopted the dock. It’s just so intuitive. How do you install an application? You tap the installer, a box will pop up then you drag the icon to the application folder (in the same box) boom you are done. No setup wizards. How to uninstall? Drag icon from app folder to trash can. Boom done. How to open your app? Tap launch pad and you see all your apps alphabetically just click the one you want. You can keep your frequent ones on the dock. Settings is just another app in launchpad and everything is well labeled. You can even use your printers scanner without digging through menus. You might have issues with finder if your used to windows though and the approach to maximizing and minimizing windows will also get you for a while.
When my Galaxy 4 died I gave iPhone a chance with the SE. I can tell you that for most use cases, there is no discernible difference between iOS and modern android outside of a few fringe features. What struck me though was the power of an ecosystem. My Mac and iPhone just work well together. If they are on the same network they just sync in the background - you need to opt in. My internet went down, my iMac saw that my iPhone had 4g and gave me the option to connect. One click your up. Similar process with s droid would be multi step. You have airdrop which just allows you to send files to another Apple device near you with a tap without you even caring what mechanism it’s using. After google bricked my onHub router I opted to get Apples airport series. They are mostly interchangeable and your Mac and iOS device have a native way to configure it without you needing to mess with connecting to it yourself and blah. Setup WiFi on one device, all your other Apple devices have it. Lots of other cool stuff happen as you add more Apple devices. My wife now as a MacBook, an IPad s d the IPhone 8. She’s been windows android her life but the transition has been sublime. With family sharing any software purchase works for all of us, and not just apples stuff like iCloud and music, everything.
Hate Apple all you want but they get the core tenet that technology should just work without you thinking. That’s why they are the most valued company in the world14
Seems like getting a CEO to upgrade his iPad to iOS 11 while it's still in beta is not a good idea. 😂2
Tirelessly explaining iPad, iCloud and Apple-ID to a non-tech to setup her iPad.
(It’s about restoring some game-status to a new iPad which is impossible without Apple-ID password… She has a different Apple-ID for every device, doesn’t know any password).
While I’m telling again and again, there’s a Growler team in the U.S. that safely navigated and landed back at base, while their instruments weren’t readable due to ice in the cockpit and their canopy was also full of ice (no visual out of the cockpit). How they did it? Using their smartwatches.
I feel useless, unable to bring good to people.4
My uncle: I am very updated with technology, you can download the ebooks I torrented on my server
Also my uncle: Ipad 2 is the newest generation, it's definitely after the ipad mini
Me: no it isn't
Uncle: yes it is
Only company that I really "hate" is Abstergo haha.
All others have their up and downsides I guess....
+ Xbox One
+ iPad Mini (don't know any company that produces such high quality but very small tablets... Therefore I still use my ~6 years old iPad Mini 1. (The battery life is insane! After all this time it still lasts about 6-7 hours!)
- The new iPhones. No innovation. Just making money.
- Smartphones (a few crashes here and there, kinda ugly, explosions!)
+ TVs (webOS is the shit!)
- Heard the Smartphones suck, not sure
And so on....3
Sooo I’m typically a proponent of physical copy of books, as I’d rather sit and read them, write and take notes. Essentially all my books turn into something out of the “half blood prince” potions book from Harry Potter.
But it’s so inconvenient as either my books are in my office or in the library at home. It ends up being something like connecting a USB... the book I need at the time is always in the opposite place I am in currently.
Also, all the books I want now are newer and none are on the used market. For a reasonable price.
So I gave in a bought an iPad with the hopes of putting the books in pdf form on it... I’ll pay for some PDFs but hey if I can get it free thru a google search then it is what it is lol.
Not sure how I’m gonna adapt to reading on a tablet, as I really prefer a physical book.. hell I still use national brand computation notebooks for all my notes. Nothing beats writing it down, AND I still have an IBM selectric 3 and Swintec, nothing beats sitting down and just letting the thoughts flow neatly on a piece of paper and then glueing it the notebook
Anyway whatcha y’alls thoughts of using an iPad as a digital library of books.. using the Apple Pencil to annotate the book. I bought the 12.9 inch as the screen size is closest to a sheet of paper
Also, I don’t read fiction all the books I read are nonfiction, reference manuals, textbooks, data sheets, user manuals, stuff like the art of computer programming by knuth, Kent beck, Robert Martin, folwler books, etc16
I'm on the hunt for new and exciting languages!
I'll state the ones I already know:
I've also learnt some styling languages:
Html, CSS, Markup and Markdown.
Some misc languages too: Regex and a runny bit of the Wolfram Language.
Also I'm kind of limited to Windows, Linux and Android, as I do not own any Apple hardware except I have access to an old iPad, so are languages like Swift still good?
Security check at the airport, I hand hover my surface pro as usual, the guy asked if I have also an ipad... Lol man I don't need that expensive toy limited to stupid apps1
DevRant landscape mode for ipad? Turning my head sideways doesn't make this keyboard feel very smart :P2
Fuck Amazon! Or apple? Or both? I don’t know...
I just wanted to read a book on my iPad using the kindle app. I can read a free excerpt from the book but when I decided that I wanted to buy the book, I couldn’t. Not from within the kindle app nor the amazon app.
I read on the internet that it has something to do with the greediness of apple and that they want an astronomical cut from the sales. So amazon decided that they wouldn’t sell ebooks in the iOS-Apps.
I had to get my android phone and buy the book using the app I’ve installed there. I could’ve also opened the amazon webpage in my browser.
Fucking retards, I just want to read! And the worst thing is, I don’t even really know whom to blame!
Anyways, now I can read the book (zum Leben ist es schön aber ich würde da ungern auf Besuch hinfahren by Tilman birr if anybody is interested)4
A Rant that took my attention on MacRhumors forum.
I pre-calculated projected actual overall cost of owning my i5/5/256 Haswell Air, which I got for $1500.
After calculations, this machine would cost me about $3000 for 3 years of use.
(Apple Care, MS Office Business, Parallels, Thunderbolt adapter to HDMI, Case... and so on).
Yea... A lot of people think it's all about the laptop with Apple. nah... not at all. There's a reason Apple is gradually dropping the price of their laptops.
They are slowly moving to a razor and blade business model... which basically is exactly what it sounds like - you buy the razor which isn't too expensive, but you've got no choice but to buy expensive additional blades.
I doubt Apple is making much money from laptop sales alone... well definitely not as much as they were making 5 years or so ago (remember the original air was about $1800 for base model, and if i remember correctly - $1000 additional dollars to upgrade to 64GB SSD from the base HDD.
Yes, ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR 64GB SSD!
Well, anyways, the point is that Apple no longer makes them BIG bucks from the laptop alone, but they still make good profits from upgrades. $300 to go to 512GB SSD from 256, $100 for 4GB extra ram, and $150 for a small bump in processor. They make good profits from these as well.
But that's not where they make mo money. It's once you buy the Macbook, they've got you trapped in their walled garden for life. Every single apple accessory is ridiculously overpriced (compared to market standards of similar-same products).
And Apple makes their own cables and ports. So you have to buy exclusively for Apple products. Every now and then they will change even their own ports and cables, so you have to buy more.
Software is exclusive. You have no choice but to buy what apple offers... or run windows/linux on your Mac.
This is a douche level move comparable to say Mircrosoft kept changing the usb port every 2-3 years, and have exclusive rights to sell the devices that plug in.
No, instead, Intel-Microsoft and them guys make ports and cables as universal as possible.
Can you imagine if USB3.0 was thinner and not backwards compatible with usb2.0 devices?
Well, if it belonged to Apple that's how it would be.
This is why I held out so long before buying an apple laptop. Sure, I had the ipod classic, ipod touch, and more recently iPad Retina... but never a laptop.
I was always against apple.
But I factored in the pros and cons, and I realized I needed to go OS X. I've been fudged by one virus or another during my years of Windows usage. Trojans, spywares. meh.
I needed a top-notch device that I can carry with me around the world and use for any task which is work related. I figured $3000 was a fair price to pay for it.
No, not $1500... but $3000. Also I 'm dead happy I don't have to worry about heat issues anymore. This is a masterpiece. $3000 for 3 years equals $1000 a year, fair price to pay for security, comfort, and most importantly - reliability. (of course awesome battery is superawesome).
Okay I'm going to stop ranting. I just wish people factored in additional costs from owning an a mac. Expenses don't end when you bring the machine home.
I'm not even going to mention how they utilize technology-push to get you to buy a Thunderbolt display, or now with the new Air - to get a time capsule (AC compatible).
It's all about the blades, with Apple. And once you go Mac, you likely won't go back... hence all the student discounts and benefits. They're baiting you to be a Mac user for life!
Apple Marketing is the ultimate.
My mom: "My iPad is broken because I deleted by Goggle account"
Me: "Are you actually using Android tablet? How the hell that you deleted your Google account affects your iPad?"
My mom: "No, I definitely using iPad, and now I can't Goggle. And I don't remember my Goggle account. Can you come and help me to fix it?"
Me: "There is no way to fix it, if you don't remember anything about your "Goggle" account. But I will come and see what happen to your iPad later."4
So I'm making an app with a classmate at school, but there's one huge problem. All the PC's and laptops at school are shit. The ICT departement at my school blocks almost everything on them. I can't install any program, open any file and I can't even open the command prompt! So I can't install Visual studio or any other IDE and basically can't do anything besides browse websites that aren't blocked. And they expect me and my classmate to make an app. Fortunately, my classmate has a spare laptop we can use, but it's really difficult for two guys to code on just one laptop. I asked my school if they could buy new laptops or if they could remove they restrictions on two laptops, but they don't want to do any of those things and now we're stuck with just one laptop. I don't know what to do. I fucking hate this!
(This doesn't have anything to do with the topic of the rant, but I just want to complain.)
There are a couple more things I hate about my school. At my school, everyone is forced to use iPads. I don't know why they don't just give us laptops instead of iPads (maybe just because there lazy). So my iPad's headphonejack and homebutton where broken for no reason and I had to get it repaired. But instead of going to an apple store or a repair shop, you need to go to the school's ICT department and get it fixed there. If you don't do that and go to a apple store or something, they will take your iPad and keep it forever! Even though you pay €200 for it every year! Also, the ICT department at my school is lazy as hell! You expect them to repair the iPad themselves, but they just send it to a repair shop. So it wouldn't even matter if I would go to the store myself! 😠 And they even do a really bad job at checking if the device even works after the repair, because I needed to get it repaired three times in a row! And don't even get me started on the bad WiFi connection.10
My top and only plan for 2020 is to buy the next iPad Pro and pen and learn to draw cats. No joke.5
so the jokers at my office facilities bought in an expensive coffee machine which has it's dedicated iPad that doesn't have any options for my fu*** latte7
So my colleague sees an iPad on a desk that someone has left by accident. He puts in the wrong password a bunch of times to lock it for an hour as a joke and accidentally wipes it!! Turns out it was about to be used for end of sprint client demo 😂2
Customer give me a broken iPad. The screen was pink or green with a not wanted 3D effect. Solution? Just kick it on the back side where the the screen connector is. That’s a so funny solution 🤣
UPDATE: I redesigned my entire app and resubmitted it: it got rejected again for not having good resolution on iPad. My app literally doesn't make sense to use on an iPad... What should I do? I tried incorporating autolayout but that is honestly the hardest and most annoying tool Apple has created.8
Me: what iPad Generation do you have?
Client: 2nd Generation
Me: Thought you had the new one?
Client: Yer I do.
Me: so how is it the 2nd Generation?!
Client: well it's the second one j have brought.
Apparently the Schiphol (dutch airport) WiFi has a nice "feature" which makes the user think they need to accept terms, instead it's a checkbox saying "I want to do a survey for a free iPad". Talk about shitty UX...2
just finished after a full day's work, headed to a bar. their menu is not on paper but an ipad app and it crashed the very second I selected "drinks".2
So, I just swatted a huge bug out of the air using my work iPad. Because it was the closest thing handy. I'm pretty sure that's not why they bought me the thing...2
I guess I'll post my first rant, rant.
(Aka rant that wasn't a pun)
The Ipads our school use all have the same code, 0000. Even though about all the features are blocked... They never blocked the ability to change the pass code. No one would know who did it, and there would be 9999 possible choices for the new IPad. Who ever though it was a good idea to let highschoolers (12-18 year old) find this out.2
The Moto MC68000 CPU in the original Mac had 68k transistors. Apple sold 372k units in 1984. 68k x 372k=25.3bn
The A12X SoC in an iPad Pro has 10bn transistors.
So, if you’re inclined to really unfair comparisons:
3 iPads => all Macs sold in the first year
Found via https://twitter.com/benedictevans/...
My app is finally on the Apple App Store.
The rant: how bloody difficult was it to get on there?! They scrutinise EVERYTHING. My promo copy, my screengrabs and also it seems that there is code that works on iPhone that doesn’t work on iPad.
I thought it was designed to be the same for ease of development? However I found a function that works perfectly well on iPhone but breaks iPad.
Anyway I guess in the long run this keeps the App Store’s quality level high and it isn’t the Wild West like the google play store. However it’s still pretty annoying. I can see why devs get angry about Apple’s process.2
Worst was with ionic and ios. Havent really worked with either and got mac that wasnt updated in ages and also they didnt give charger. Dealing with sudos and not using sudos then trying to work with xcode and free licenses took me a good time until i got first successful build for iPad. Biggest time consuming mistake was that i had to logout of itunes before i could make another account. It only gave me error and said try again later. Made me furious but after i got setup working everything worked quite nicely. Loved the safari developer view.5
So, against like 90% of all odds, we (I) managed to submit the application to Apple for review at the ripe old time of 21.27 last night.
Events of the day included:
- fighting with appstoreconnect (turns out they just return a 500 if you haven't paid your Apple developer membership)
- removing FAQs altogether because "it would have taken too long to make those today" (ticket in Jira for this for ~4 months)
- our app was targeting both iPad and iPhone, so we had to rebuild the app for iPhone only because "we don't have app store images for iPad".
On the bright side, that leaves 3 days next week to get the rest of the backend finished for actual go live on Monday 16th, so long as Apple don't reject the app.
Side note: adding the target-device preference affected the android build somehow? despite the preference being iOS only, and wrapped in a platform="iOS" section.
No Size for iPad (only mocks are mobile and desktop)
Ambiguous on Close Button (size and position)
Me: iPad size, should it be X?
Product Owner: Yes
QA: Close button is to Small, change to bigger
#Product Owner Review
Product Owner: Close button to big, make it smaller, also iPad size is not that, is Y.
Hey, I have a cool idea about a new way to solve a problem our users are having!
Type type type, now I have a working prototype! Show it to the team, everyone loves it. Polish it a little, it works really great!
Now let's test it on an iPad like the ones our users have... Nope, nothing works, undefined is not a function.
F*CK YOU SAFARI, you're why we can't have nice things. 😤
My roomies safari doesn't load our college website properly.
Now, i know there are certain things to make a website apple compatible,
But i wonder if he is going to go ' FUCK APPLE FUCK APPLE' like he does with other companies!
Why do Apple have to hide the ”request desktop version” button behind the refresh button on the Ipad?
I get Idea. They problably thought it like you refresh as desktop site. But it took me ages to find out how to request desktop site!
Why cant it just be like chrome and have the settings and tools behind a menu where everything is.
And this is just one of many of Apple products flaws! Shame on you Apple!
If you wonder why i even use a ipad it’s because it’s a school ipad that is locked so we cant install apps.6
So due to some necessary repairs on my Nokia 6.1 i had to use an iPhone for the last 2 weeks (was the device they gave me for the duration of the repair). And let me say something in advance: I own a Macbook Pro, i own an iPad Pro, both devices are excellent for what i use them for. I enjoy OS X, i enjoy iOS on the tablet. But oh boy is the iPhone a shitshow of a magnitude i have never seen.
First off: The notifications. They feel like Android 4 or something. No customization, no grouping, not context. Also the swipe down gesture simply blocks whatever i am doing.
Multitasking: What a shitshow. There is no continuity, apps reload on a whim, no switching between apps (except that strange thing where the app shows up on the left upper screen, but i can't go back from there?)
Settings: WHY ARE APPS SETTINGS IN THE GLOBAL SETTINGS!! And not even all settings are. They are all over the place. And the settings are so convoluted and bloated, i can't find half of the things i am looking for.
Clock & Alarm: Goddamn that design choice with the edit button infuriates me to no end. Why can't i click an alarm and simply edit it? Also: Why do i have to enter the clock app to even see which alarm is going off next?
The Appdrawer: WHY CAN'T I SORT MY APPS BY NAME?? I have to conciously remember where i put things. Apps i use rarely, apps i use often.
God, iOS on the phone is so fucking terrible.4
Modern hardware is rubbish. I recently donated a load of computers from the 1970s and 1980s to a technology museum, they all worked well and could still be used and set up in the museum's displays. My more recent stuff, from the last few years, I decided to sell on eBay. Some of it just had to be thrown out, mostly due to non-replaceable batteries that would no longer charge. What nonsense is this? Why is it easier to use a 35-year-old computer than a 3-year-old Chromebook or 5-year-old iPad?5
Opinions on the current gen iPad mini/air (apart from "reeeee Apple")? iPad 4 was a brilliant device, loved it, looking for a similar thing. Can't find any decent Android tablet and honestly, not sure if I want Android at all.
I basically want a companion device with superb battery life, a larger screen than my phone, and good and useful apps (used Garageband, Magellan, and Voice Synth quite a bit on the old iPad). Will be going to college in a few months so something useful for carrying around too that's more portable than my laptop.
Considered a Celeron laptop, but it's basically useless for anything but text editing and basic browsing.9
I will have you know that being part of the mobile solutions team is pretty sweet when you have nothing to do but keep a few databases clean and up to date, test which iPad is best suited for the sales people and buy 20 cases to test them for sturdiness.
Seriously without dumb idiots arguing about roaming costs and demanding help with the most basic shit this would be heaven.
I mean it's apple but still having every color of the 9.7 iPad and of the 12,9 pro stacked up on your desk is pretty cool.
FUCK XCODE. FUCK AUTOLAYOUT. I have been working on my app for eight months, perfecting every detail and making the UI absolutely stunning. Today, Apple rejected my app for not supporting iPad. My app was not supposed to support iPad, I would hate for a user to install on an iPad. So, I said whatever and tried to autolayout the app. This didn't work, so I turned off autolayout. Guess what. My entire layout was destroyed and when I tried to click the undo button, nothing happened. This is classic Xcode. I am so fucking pissed, I want to scream. I just lost months of hard work because they can't fucking get their developer tool working, but they can release a phone with no headphone jack.4
At my school we use iPads (I don't know why) and the teachers can see what's on your screen, lock you inside an app, block apps/basically everything, lock/shut down your iPad, uninstall apps and they can even see what's your location. It sucks ass, but with my "professional" hacking skills I figured out a way to hack the system. If I use a VPN, for some reason they can't do anything to my iPad. I'm still waiting for the day my school is going to ditch iPad's an buy us laptops, but at least I can sleep good at night without having my teacher doing stuff to my iPad.
(I have a ton of other things I don't like about my school, and would love to rant about, but I don't want this rant to be 5000 pages long)5
iPad + Apple pencil ONLY for note taking during lectures
Yay or nay?
Got any other combos that arent ms surface with a pen? (Bad experience cause of ssd failures)
Or what about those Wacom tablets? Are they even good in terms of pen to screen response latency?
Educate me if you saw me as an ignorant piece of f but are there any tablet with stylus pen support that are almost input-lag free like the apple pencil with iPad? I once tried it in the store and boi did it truly impress me, also I haven't seen anything else close to it, I tried the Samsung ones, they didn't look to me as fast as the apple pencils
Do you have like out-of-the-box ideas that are not pen and paper? Do write them down8
Was trying to figure out why my fix had created a performance issue in our app. Tried loads of different things. Turned out it was because I was iterating over a ~300 item array, and then iterating over another ~300 item array within that loop 😂
300 iterations * 300 = unhappy iPad2
Dear @dfox and @trogus, please make the app go landscape for large screen devices like iPads, now I have to hold it always in portrait mode and it is highly uncomfortable at this size of screen4
When the client, armed with an iPhone, iPad, Tower and Laptop tells me he doesn't want his emails in the cloud 'invade the mafia hack me'... 👍2
I'm hungry and suddenly I have an urge to waste money on some stupid shit like a new ipad or 4k monitor but then I remember that the new paycheck will bitch slap me in the face if I do that, so back to hungry. =.=
Me and my family had gone to Paris and Switzerland for vacation. We took alotta photos, there's was about 10GB worth photos in our iPad. The iPad was not working properly, so I backed up the photos to my laptop and gave the iPad for formatting.
Unfortunately, one fine day, my laptop shut down and never switched on again (long story short). We gave it for fixing, but it's still not fixed.
And so we lost all our photos, now there's no proof that we went to to those places 😆6
So i'm making a menu for my friend. He shows me a menu he made on his iPad, all in Chalkboard SE (identical to Comic Sans), lined up using tabs and spaces, and asked for the same font.
I'm not joking.2
Posting this rant on behalf of a friend.
I cannot install Mac OS-X Sierra on my top-of-the-line desktop MacPro because Apple has decided they want me to buy a new one, therefore I cannot install iTunes 12.5, therefore I cannot sync my iPhone 6s or iPad Air 2 to my music, backups or apps. $&@# you too, Apple! 😡5
After a long and relatively serious meeting with the boss. I say thank you, he says thank you, his iPad replies, You're welcome.1
After many years, I am trying to learn to react and react-native again.
I went to react native and click on get started. I downloaded CRNA and created Hello World. It asked me to download Expo client.
I was like WTF is this expo? So I installed it on my Note 8 and run the app. This is awesome. I don't have to build the whole app. It did not require Android SDK.
I open the expo website and found lots of SNACKS by other people. I can see the live output of many libraries and I loved the whole thing.
Finally, I installed the Expo client on my iPad. There was no scan barcode option. I thought it was weird. I saw login option. So naturally, I log in and wait for it to show in Expo client. Still nothing.
Finally, google about it and found out that due Apple, I can not see other people example on expo anymore.
Why the fuck Apple has to kill something this awesome. I can not express my anger on this.
@dfox & @trogus
Any chance of the tablet versions of DevRant to have rotatable interfaces? I always keep my iPad on my Smart Cover which is in landscape.
Are there some good external portable macbook pro monitors that have the vertical/portrait functionality? Also, it should be rechargeable and should not get power from my laptop when there's still a charge. (I use MBP 15" 2018 model)
We are agile at work (all use laptops, no permanent seats) and I need an extra portale monitor because there are no provided external monitors to use.
I was thinking of buying and iPad pro as a portable external monitor via catalina sidecar but it is laggy somehow and very expensive. Thanks! 🙂23
Now every boss and client wants RWD on their sites... it's a pity they don't even know what it means...
"Why do this heading change size? I want it bigger!"
"the photo was ok side by side with the text. Why does it move above on my iPad"
"i can't zoom!"5
I tend to do a lot of sketching and note taking and like to use pen on paper. But sick of tearing out notes and accumulating bits if paper that contain notes here and there. I was thinking of going digital with this specific task (for cheap) i don't own an ipad so was thinking of getting a Fire HD 8" and a Boxwave EverTouch stylus. Im all Apple so don't know android, would this hardware do the trick and what would be a decent note taking and organising app for it? Appreciate any advice comments. Other uses for it are irrelevant.5
What do you think of my setup?
I carry a strong laptop for heavy lifting and an iPad for RDP'ing into either my laptop or cloud hosted VM's.
This setup is obviously optimized for mobility, if I had a stable place to work, I'd use a desktop with multiple screens.
I want a devRant iPad app.
All it really needs to be is a streaming feed with the slide-out menu static on the left. I'd be happy with that.
Pretty simple, but obviously not critical. I just hope it's on the //TODO list. I'd enjoy it (especially if it supported multitasking).
But don't feel as though you should support the 12.9-inch Pro because lol fuck that monstrosity.8

I'm planning to go up the One World Observatory tmr morning but not sure which ticket to buy, particularly the IPAD option with streaming video. It says you can watch them later although it also expires apparently. So I'm wondering it worth it... (I'm also thinking since it's streaming and I can share it with anyone, it means I can probably download it too... the techie way).
Also can I bring a USB charger? My plan is to sorta just sit up there in the morning. Then head to Timeout Market for lunch-dinner.3
I made my first project (or at least started) using my iPad (with some help from my laptop).
It’s in an early stage (a few hour old) and the editor and the viewer share data only with cookies and local storage instead of a server but it's still a concept.
What do you think?
Would it be possible to allow the iPad app to rotate? I only ever use it in landscape unless forced, because my typing speed and accuracy take a nosedive with the smaller keyboard...2
When our app encounters an error, it shows an alert with an option to copy the error details to the clipboard, that includes the full stack trace, broadcasting to the world that we are coding in C#. Also, our page URLs show .aspx at the end, so anyone using it can see details of our implementation. Not exactly world-stopping since the desktop portal is only available on customer servers and the ipad app requires username/password AND pin authentication. But still....
Dude in my Calc 2 class just bitched about iPhones having "shitty software" referencing that bug from around ~6 years ago, when a specific iMessage text would reboot your phone. IMO, 99% of what Apple does well is software. UI is subjective, but final cut pro is unbelievable in terms of functionality for its price, their software is so well optimized that iPhones have been able to use comparably tiny batteries and still compete. They are consistent throughout their company with software design, while companies like Google are so stratified it took years before their material design had been implemented in all their services, there are still a few that aren't (not to mention the meme of Google killing off all their projects). I hate tablets, but the iPad pro has the best software/hardware implementation of any I've ever seen. Apple's interconnectivity between devices is unbelievable, whether it's Continuity features or the setup process just recognizing group devices around and pulling data to create consistent account info and saving you taps. Siri is shit, but apart from that their software isn't bad enough that you should complain about that instead of...
Their Macs are fucking pressure-cookers, and their fuckin marketing department is like a different company all-together, and their anti-fix-it-yourself policies are so user hostile that they're toe-to-toe with being as abusive to customers as Oracle.
TL;DR the biggest scam Apple has pulled off is not that the sheep still think Android and PC users are living in 2010, but they've convinced the sheep that they know what shitty software is. At that point they're too many levels deep and there is no red-pill strong enough for them.2
Tl;Dr This guy thinks apple is poised to switch the Macs to a custom arm based chip over x86! He's now on my idiot list.
"They've made a custom GPU", great! That's as helpful as "The iPad is a computer now", and guess what Arm Mali GPUs exist! Just because they made their own GPU doesn't make it suitable for desktop graphics (or ML)!
"They released compilation tools right when they released their new platform, so developers could compile for it right away", who would be an idiot not too...
"Because Android apps run in so many platforms, it's not optimized for any. But apple can optimize their apps for a sepesific users device", what!? What did I miss? What do you optimize? Sure, you can optimize this, you can optimize that... But the reason why IOS software is "optimized", and runs better/smoother (only on the newest devices of course) is because it's a closed loop, proprietary system (quality control), and because they happen to have done a better job writing some of their code (yes Android desperately needs optimization in numerous places...).
I could go on... "WinTel's market share has lowly plataued", "tHeY iNtRoDuCeD a FiElD pRoGrAmMaBlE aRrAy"
For apple to switch Macs to arm would be a horrible idea, face it: arm is slower than x86, and was never meant to be faster, it was meant to be for mobile usage, a good power to Wh ratio favoring the Wh side.
Printers are the most annoying thing. Why can't iPhone and iPad print to normal printers? WHY CANT WORD PRINT TO MY 3D PRINTER???
Quick question to you guys and gals,
I really want to become an iOS app developer. I know it would be long and painful way to learn Objective-C (some say it looks like alien language compared to C). Swift is rather new, much easier to learn, but I know Objective-C is a must to be considered as true iOS dev.
The question is: is there such a need of iOS developers (I mean UK/Canada/US/Germany)?. I live in Poland and there's not much to do in iOS development (few job offers, everybody is hyped by JS and frameworks changing every year, some offers are often underpayed remote work for foreign clients). I am now 20 years old, still learning at Uni and not having any responsibilities, so I may go someday to UK for a year or two, since the market for iOS devs is more diversed and bigger than in Poland. I know I am complaining (most Poles do that), but I've learned English since I was 4 and it's a pity not to use it as a resource to get a better job offer than in my mother country.
Thanks for all the responses, especially from people working as iOS devs4
Id probably still end up doing maintenance on our iPad app. No mere machine could ever comprehend that codebase and its *ahem* quirks....
Well this year ARM Surface such a disappointment. And I already saw this coming,
Putting the $999 is not cool
The original IPad was price $499 from the start. The Surface Pro X should compete the ChromeBook not Ipad
Which is obviously don't even have a chance.4
Someone testing the project i am working on with an iPad came over and started swiping up and down the screen and said look I can't see the price update when I click here.
Well move your fucking hand!1
Tablet recommendations? I know this isn't really the place to ask but I trust you devs.
I'm just about to start back college and I'd like to have a light carry around for days I don't need my laptop. I love my 17" Dell, it's a beast and that's why I bought it but damn it's overkill for taking notes and running little things through a bash terminal. A tablet and keyboard seems like a nice idea.
Ideally, I wanna run Linux. But I'm not sure if there's a commercial tablet that facilitates OS changes easily out of the box.
No iPad. Not an apple fan, and it's just not what I'm after.
The MS surface seems pretty good, but I haven't looked too deeply into replacing the OS.
I just want a nice Linux tablet. I dunno.
I got lazy with my responsive site and iPadOS13 has come along to kick my ass.
It loads the iPad Pro 11” screen size but with a desktop user agent in safari.
Late night writing some ‘real’ css now.
I guess this is a rant at myself more than anything 🙉5
Does anybody feel that the notifications are broken in the Android devRant app?
It works fine on my iPad.4
Talking over an assignment for an angular app a couple of months ago: responsiveness was not important and not a part of the scope. Its for internal use and nobody will do this on his phone.
Today the designer, next to me (on his iPad). With a look on his face like he sees water burning, why isn’t it responsive?2
I wish the iOS app could be used in landscape mode on iPad. It would allow us to view the algo feed and any other feed side by side for example.
does anyone know how to make an iPad mini work fast cause like mine is slow as heck and is like indestructible so like I can't get a new one please help me:(2
Any iPhone app developers. desperately looking for a very basic app that controls iPad screen time. For example between the hours of 9pm and 9am the screen is locked and requires a passcode to use it. The passcode has to be different to the device passcode to be set by parent. Set for weekdays etc. a bit like you would set central heating. apps out there are way too involved and based on setting individual app time. Hope someone can do this, i guarantee it’ll sell. Keep it simple.1
with 8MP@iPad Air 2 ╮(￣▽￣"")╭
and Nokia Lumia 1020 even Huawei(unknown model but surely 48MP) can't do that
(1020 produced low quality images (more ambiguous than that) and Huawei got even just a white circle, garbage.)3
Do you guys think the iOS version will always support older devices? I'm stuck on my old iPod due to iPad screen fracturing.6
I've been an android/anti-ios person for around a decade and im now seriously considering switching to ios when the new iphones land. My mother is an apple nut and my brother is on android and everytime i bring up even the slightest nitpick about ios or macos (such as the fact that the "always use this application" checkbox on macos does not work or that you have to upload music through itunes) they jump on the "wtf then why would even consider it??????" train. In short its because ios seems at least a little bit more stable overall (havent had much experience with ios in general this is really more of a first impression). Well I got a replacement LG V20 just over a year ago and it has not aged well, had to replace the battery because i barely got 4 hours with minimal usage, even when i got the thing it was rather jittery, and its just now getting oreo (and surely wont be getting pie). Hell i was removing several apps earlier and it took a solid 4 MINUTES to uninstall an icon pack. After some investigation into the ios ecosystem i found that all the apps that i would need are on there so that was great. What im really hoping for though is some stability/longevity, im ok with paying around 1000 for a phone if it lasts a while and stays in decent shape. Finally the fact that the updates are sparing at best (with the exception of pixel phones) is a great annoyance whereas my mothers (around 4 years old) ipad is rocking ios 11. Could someone who has made the leap make a recommendation? I love android but i feel like all i would accomplish is buying another phone that craps out after less than a year.7
What are your thoughts on Apple's latest conference where it introduced the new iPad and updates to Mac Mini and Macbook Air?6
I get home from work after a busy day in the office and try to use my iPad to catch on some Android books had saved for offline reading there.
I can't use the devii as it's off and so power it up and coming back later to use my buggy mind can't recall the passcode.
To make it worse hadn't synched it with iTunes on my machine and am fucked.
I try some few passcodes with no avail and call the shorts a full reset though all have to lose all data damn Tim Cook and company.
Anyone here who has managed to build a small laptop with a Raspberry Pi? I would love to use my iPad via USB connection as a screen for it but not finding the right apps for my needs3
Just bought all the parts for my build I mentioned last time. First time building a custom PC. Wish me luck! Also buying a iPad pro with nutype f1 keyboard to RDP and work anywhere. Weeeeee
Apple better not be slowing down my Ipad Air 2 to save battery because goddamn it costs $300 to fix at my work!!!
Me [as Android guy for years] getting an iPad and navigating on the internet.
*Finds an interesting PDF file* Wow let's download it for later.
WHAAAAAT DEF... it's just a PDF download, why it should take all of this???1
I fucking hate mobile and iPad ui and general ux. I hate that I get shit for not being able to fix people's problems on them quickly enough with or without googling. Apparently that's my fucking line of work, no I'm just a fucking code monkey, I don't know where whichever asshat hide the setting to Jimmy or abysmal fucking browser implementations in fucking mobile chrome that makes it unable for you to buy car parts but it fucking works fine on a desktop browser. I ront want to reset your fucking weak passwords because you never remember them.
I can't even change my fucking phones background, or figure out or I lack voicemail because my plan or the fucking optoknnisnt present (one plus 2) and don't care enough to put more time or google it.
Maybe I'm just fucking incompetent. I like being able just to right click shift on desktop, going to properties or running both commands.
I never will stop being an imposter until I can fucking fix anything like a legit engineer.
Scrolling numbers in Spotify on a iPad while i was listening on the other side of the office while rebooting phone etc.
Best i can do is sticking a stickynote under a mouse. Fun for 0,5 sec
Make a flow document on the integration between web and iPad app via deeplink/universal link to streamline some stuff.
Went to three days vacation for friends engagement.
Today reached the official and found out that in last three days, my boss and my pm had a meeting and changed whole flow without asking and that flow is impossible to implement.
Spend whole day talking to both and revert whole thing.
What a waste of time.
IOS 13 for my Ipad broke its battery indicator it's been stuck at 59% for the entire day. Just really hope it doesn't give up the ghost during the day...1
