One day a client sent me gifts and a sweet letter just because they loved their new website so much. I just about cried. I work in an industry where acknowledgment and thankfulness by clients are extremely rare. 😱😭8
** Non Dev Rant **
I just need to rant about this because I'm furious.
Last night I had a house warming party. It was mostly, if not all, of my girlfriend's friends. I'm a cranky old developer so I don't have friends.
Everyone was nice and dressed nice and brought us gifts.. all of the gifts were pretty much specifically for my girlfriend.
So this one girl came... she's younger.. around 25. She came with no gift (I wasn't expecting gifts I just need to mention it for the plot), and was dressed in sweat pants. Alright, no problem.. I really don't care at least she's here.
So as more guests arrive I finally get a gift. Someone brought me a case of beer and a couple of yummy cookies. I had to put it down on the kitchen counter for a bit because I needed to grab more chairs.
The basement door where the chairs are is 10 feet away from where I left my present..
I come back from upstairs.. not even 5 minutes later and I see sweat pant girl stuffing one cookie in her fucking mouth and the other in her pants...
Are you fucking kidding me!? I bought desserts and snacks and all the alcohol you can think of and you steal MY fucking present. Not just one of them... but BOTH.
She saw the other guests give me it.. say "here buddy this is for you"... followed me in the kitchen and STOLE my fucking cookies.
I was going to eat them this morning with my coffee and I realized I couldn't because this fucking ass hole took my fucking cookies!!!!
I hosted this party for my girlfriend's SJW ass hole fucked up friends... put a smile on my face... pretended to like people... and for once didn't yell at someone... and the fucking thanks I get is 2 stolen fucking cookies.
I'm a victim of rather severe child abuse, both physical and mental. I've cut my mother out of my life on several occasions, and disowned her husband on father's day a few years ago. Whenever they're in my life they make things slowly but significantly worse.
They'd been using my previous hard times to push their way into my life again, and are now trying to buy their way in -- this time not into my life, but into my 2yo son's life.
I've done everything I could to keep his existence from them. I hid pregnancy from them, dropped any mew mannerisms and cute vocabulary when speaking to them, never let them see toys or hear sounds if I needed to call them, hid the carseat, etc. I did a perfect job. Out of necessity I've been hiding my life from them since I was 13, and I've never done better than this.
But they knew his name, sex, and age. This means they went digging, and a bloody lot. There is literally no public info relating him to me, and nobody that knows us would tell them, either -- they all know and understand.
For years I've refused to tell these people where I lived, too. We've been here for over five years, and three years ago they just randomly showed up at our door. I never gave them an address, and the house isn't in my name. I never had any privacy when I lived with them, either -- literally not even in the bathroom -- but now we have our own house and they still randomly intrude? asldhflakshdf
But. This Christmas Eve, we got two large boxes (fruit flats) stacked full of presents from them. A third for me, a third for my girlfriend, and a third for my 2yo. Name tags and all.
Why can't they just leave us alone? On Christmas of all holidays? Why do they have to ruin everything? Why can't they just go away?
I've made things abundantly clear, and they just. won't. stop. I feel so angry and exasperated and helpless and trapped. I went from listening to "die in a fire" to crying helplessly on the stairs. All I want is to be left alone and not harassed and blackmailed and manipulated and guilted and given expired food as "gifts."
and before you ever even think to defend them, please re-read my first three sentences.
Merry fucking Christmas.44
I buy rubber duck related gifts for people in the company I work for. And somehow I have gotten unicorns back. Today I think they won.7
My dad used to be a software engineer so he and my mom understand. They just "want better" for their daughter, and for me to "use my gifts" whatever those are.
Unless they mean my sarcasm and foul mouth. But I can use those as a dev.9
Got a new deck of cool cards for me, my brother and a friends for their birthdays 😁
Thanks for your rant @BambuSource long time ago!
Here is the link:
PS: Look at my cool Yu-Gi-Oh!-Desk 😜11

When your company gifts wireless headphones for festive season and everyone starts pairing at the same time... you can connect to anyone!!5
So for my senior night last night, all the seniors got gifts. I said that I wanted rubber ducks. I got all these ducks AND a FUCKING HUGE DUCK (currently deflated, I'll post a picture sometime).
These fuckers went all out and got me this many fucking ducks. I will never have a debugging issue again in my life15
Todays my bday and i hope i can be happy at least today, i ask for no gifts from this life, just want to be happy16
That time you think you found your dream dev job...
But they really just needed a content entry person so the other dev could add 'senior' to his title and work on all the new fun projects, while you're stuck fixing IE7 bugs in his code from 3 years ago.
He used prototype instead of jQuery.
You try to tell them about responsive design, but they think everything needs a separate mobile version.
You spend half the day learning his custom functions to a cms he built 2 years ago, and he's in the process of rebuilding a new cms from the ground up, so you have to learn the new version too.
Was fired 3 days before my birthday, and didn't get my company gift, even though I contributed to every one else's gifts.
Fired 2 months before birth of my child so lost my insurance.
After my time there... They now build responsive, they now use jQuery for everything. I also showed them how to do IE testing with virtual box, instead of them using the secretary's computer.7

I have less than four weeks before I have to have my project production ready
But why not make me waste my time in useless web based fucking trainings for bullshit HR issues I'll never deal with.
"Don't give gifts of more than $100 to potential clients!" Shut fuck up I don't work with clients.
Piss off and let me do my job.
For our office secret Santa one year I drew the boss's name. I don't know him very well as he's a pretty unsociable person, for the first six months of my employment was introduced to clients as the web developer's "little buddy." So I really wanted to do something passive agressive.
I spent a few days trying to find the best prank gifts. I landed on a glitter bomb. I filled a balloon with glitter, puffed just enough air in it so it fit in the box, and rigged it up with an x-acto blade inside which would pop the balloon when you open the top flaps.
It worked fantastically. The balloon popped, glitter went everywhere, the entire office was laughing except the boss. It was days before the glitter started to dissipate from his beard.
Four years ago while still a newbey in Android Dev and still using the eclipse IDE which was hell to configure by adding Android plugins,my girlfriend had a birthday.
With my new found love of coding thought of developing a b-day app for her. With so little android knowledge I had a great idea the main activity would have her photo as the background and button which when clicked would show a toast saying happy b-day love.
After spending few minutes in Tutorial point and learning how to display a toast and setting click listeners on buttons I was good to go and compiled the app.
Later that evening I head to her room where her b-day was to be held with some of her lady friends .When presenting gifts I presented her gift said had one more surprise for her and asked for her phone and using bluetooth sent the apk to her phone.
Installing the app I was scared to death on seeing how my grey buttons were displaying on her 2.7 screen size since had no idea on designing for multiple screens.
Giving her back the phone she loved the app and felt like her superman in the room though not for long. Her lady friends had gone ahead took her phone and were critising the app:
Why can't I take a selfie
Why can't the app play a b-day song for her and this went on them not knowing how hurting that was.
Bumped on the lady who lead the onslaught on me and had to go down memory lane.Life is a journey.2
Happiness is getting free T-shirt from a start up from different country for just signing up their product...
My best wishes to the company..
And thanks for sending it..6
@cozyplanes birthday is coming.....
And my dad is asking if I want some presents....
But I can't think of one.
I already have decent headphones and earphones, speaker, keyboard, mouse, laptop, monitor, phone, and tablet...
I personally don't need anything now, but I want to get something.
Can anyone recommend hardware stuff for me? (not software) Mostly tech related, but if you can think of music stuff or leisure stuff (like boosted board, even tho I don't have the time to ride it), that's great too!
Will waiting for you guys/gals suggestions.
P.S. Ofc I want to get my own A320 or A350, but I am pretty sure my dad can't afford it. If any of you guys/gals have the money, please contact me.17
So it turns out that the iPhone X was one of the most popular christmas gifts this year in Norway. I mean fucking hell, how is that even possible given the price?1
Eric Thomas' Top 10 Rules For Success
1- Know what you want.
If you don’t know what you want, how will you know what to say yes to in your life? Stop taking every body else’s leftovers and step up and take what you deserve!
2- Work on your gift.
We all have our own individual talents, gifts and strengths. But those natural gifts will only become truly great by refining and nourishing them. Natural ability will get you started, but commitment and determination to achieve greatness is what will get you to where you want to be.
3- No excuses.
Stop using your circumstances, finances or current position in life as an excuse to justify why you aren’t working towards your goals. You are in charge. If you aren’t where you want to be, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself honestly- WHY? Take responsibility for you life once and for all.
4- Upgrade your values.
Your values dictate your behaviours. And your behaviours create your results. If you want to a different result, you need to change your behaviour.
5- You reap what you sow.
Nothing in life is free. It is up to you to determine the course of your life. If you want success, you need to do what it takes, daily, to get there. Don’t focus so much on being successful. Focus on solving problems, helping others, and adding value to people’s lives, and success will come.
6- Education is the great equaliser.
If you are at the bottom, you need to learn. If you are at the top, you still need to learn. Never, ever, ever stop growing and educating yourself.
7- What is your WHY?
Why do you wake up in the morning and hustle? Why do you do what you do? Knowing the answer to this question is the single most important thing to know about yourself if you want to become successful. When you know WHY you are doing what you do, you won’t ever quit, even on a bad day.
8- Have boundaries.
If you want to be a huge success, you have to be strict on yourself with how you spend your energy. Distractions will come in many forms, family, friends, TV, but you have to make sure that your time is being spent wisely.
9- Speak from the heart.
Transparency is attractive. Don’t be afraid to open up to the world and let yourself be seen.
10- Succeed as bad as you want to breathe.
Everybody wants to be successful. But not everybody is willing to do the work that it takes to become successful. When you are willing to get so uncomfortable, so out of your depth, so blind that you have no other choice but to be successful, THEN you will become successful. The only question you need to ask yourself is this. Am I willing?
So, brand new laptop. Running an i5-7200U, 8gb of RAM, just put a 1tb SSD in there. Even has an optical drive my dudes! Also got a nice lineup of new mechanical pencils cause my mom is a fucking boss. Today's been a good day.
Merry Christmas everyone!
After spending my entire holiday vacation fucking around with the one language that really digs with my state of mind (Ruby) when developing and having to do some quick troubleshooting on 2 of our applications (Java and PHP respectively) I can honestly say: I legit don't want to go back to that ever again.
But money means more to me than my own personal biases. I have delved in some of the most HATED platforms that developers could normally ask for in terms of work. And have only done some very basic (fucking obnoxiously basic) consulting in terms of Rails, to the point that it might not be even worth putting on a cv. But fuck me man, if I could just fuck around building rails solutions for a living, from the frontend to the backend, I think I would for once be happy with the things that I work with with things more than monetary pleasure.
Y'all know your boy, I ain't no neckbeard, but I fuck with things that a lot of others don't, to me Lisp dialects and Smalltalk are gifts from dev heaven, and I have thrown out Clojure in production (my app is still chugging along just fine at work thank you very mucho) but in terms of pure web development, I have never been happier than when I generate a rails project and start tinkering around.
Sigh.......here is to hoping that maybe I will eventually open my own rails shop.6
Gifts from company
Why are you sending me something which I don't want? Isn't the concept of gifting is to give something which the receiver can utilize. Just send me the bonus and let me decide what I want for myself. I don't want expensive chocolates and cookies with unconventional jars. I want a nice a pair of headphones or maybe a smartwatch. The price is the same as what you are sending me, so please stop this.2
Is that time of the year when my company sends us gifts and they end up being the worst chinese products.3
Giving back little gifts of code for Christmas 🎄
Yayy!! Hoping to have a productive PR-full December✨2
Its christmass and im writing code for Advent of Code 2019 and Playing elite dangerous.
Yes thats the way i like it.
(Yes we already gave gifts to each other so no worries).
And well since this is Haxk20 it woudlnt be me without compiling something.
Last year it was kernel. Now its full android ROM on server. YAY.
Went into the office today to turn in my badge and gun (security badge/parking pass and yubikeys really) since I'm pretty much being given my last week before changing jobs to do brain dumps for knowledge transfer, and fuck all else.
Found a jar of moonshine in a closet when I went to take my things. IT said I could keep it. Not a bad parting gift.
So I recently finished my Abi (final school exams thing in germany) and got relatively good grades. My IT grades were good, I was best of the class. So two local companies gave me some neat gifts (the best of the class always reveive some presents). One of the companies I was thinking about applying to even gifted me a Bluetooth speaker (thanks for that!).
Now comes the bad part: I looked up the speaker on amazon and now it thinks I want to buy it. I get ads from that exact speaker EVERYWHERE although I already own it. And no, amazon doesn't even think about showing me ads of other articles I've been looking at way more often and way longer.
for just fifteen dollars a day you TOO can help a poor beardleas man by sharing part of your beard today. All around the world beardless waifs are beaten, abused, and left out in the rain. They are hungry and cold. Please. For just twenty dollars a day you too can help one of these helpless beardless bastards. Everyday they get colder, and hungrier. Please, wont you have a heart. Even a small donation of fifty dollars a day can mean the world to these patchy faced gifts from god.
For just a hundred dollars a day you can make a difference.

Hey so Father's Day is coming up, any ideas for gifts? He's like 60 and though a dev, not really a tech type.3
var longRant = true;
I am dextel2, if you know me, might as well know that I'm facing from quite issues, work issues personal issues and health issues
Recently broke up with my girlfriend, because I was or may be am too coward to carry on or maybe too scared from the future or our future. Initially, the break-up was mutual and understandable, this naturally affected my focus on work.
To overcome this and work issues it took me a week or so, meanwhile I mailed her few gifts for her birthday (2 weeks before her birthday), I didn't or nearly didn't wished and after wishing her she said something which affected me even worse, I don't know if we are even friends, this incident took place 3 days before, and its still fresh for me but somehow I'll overcome.
Maybe that's why I changed my username.
My parents, especially my mother knows there's something wrong with me and advised my to be happy (funny, right? because this was after I changed my username) .
I was not able to focus on work, the boss called in and gave me "improve yourself or if" pep talk, and while that duration (maybe before) I've been partially blind (thanks to my meds for epilepsy), I'll consult soon to my doctor when he is back from his vacation.
As of now, writing this rant I have no regrets so far, the only thing is that I want to be happy, maybe I am depressed, maybe this is due to her (can't really blame her).
Please help, how would you handle such stress and be happy?5
How do you bribe *cough* "thank" your character references?
I know a few people who vouched for me in the past without me asking for it and a few others that I asked for permission to list down in my character references. Most of these people live in different cities, companies, and some are even in different countries so the usual "I'll treat you to dinner and fuck your brains out." wouldn't work.
Kidding aside, do those online gift certificates make decent gifts? I'd love to have an excuse to stalk someone, see what they like, and have it appear at their doorstep but that might be too much unless I can make a lantern out of them.
I'm thinking that a certificate for several orders of coffee in a decent coffee shop would be a good choice since that's the common denominator of all the developers I worked with - coffee love.
So I earn no money ( Only get money from the government for going to school) and I live with my parents and I am 18. Is it socially acceptable for me to not buy christmas gifts for anyone?5
For all the iOS Users out there, stick to 10.3.3 (Still a small window to download and verify). Cool gifts are coming out.
Lovely to watch,
Hellish to traverse
I will raise my cup to it,
Behind my clear windows,
And my middle finger,
For when I open up the doors,
Atleast the computer doesn't overheat,
Even though it seems I get hot a lot,
Because the buildings are burning up,
The thermostat they crank it up,
Comes the holiday,
I see those familiar faces,
Gathered around the fireplaces,
I wanted a peaceful day,
'till they take my quiet away,
More socks as gifts to give me,
Oh my GO single D
Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1
Here's a story about why putting util functionality in a generic parent class is baaaad. So we run into a bug where an online shop module we develop causes a third party module to break the entire site until the session expires.
We track the bug down to the fact that the third party module has added some functionality to the part of the shop that deals with the cart and that functionality expects that one of the module's libraries is initialized. But as it turns out another of that module's libraries that is loaded earlier is fetching the cart and thus triggers our module which adds gifts to it.
Now, since we need a deeper integration with the cart to make gifts depend on the cart contents we call the part of it that now depends on the third party module's unloaded library.. So we think changing the order the third party libraries are loaded will fix the issue, only to discover the unloaded one is a child class of the first and the cart is fetched in the parent constructor. The parent of course then turns out to be a generic util class, inherited by all the module's libraries, so whatever order we load them in, the constructor is always called, so we had no other choice but to dynamically disable our module during the initialization of those libraries and then patch the updated cart contents into them after they've all been initialized.
At this point we get curious what that module's doing with the cart contents only to discover.. nothing. It's just that the parent class is full of utils and data fetching that the vendor reuses in all their modules..
My friends and family complain I'm hard to buy birthday presents for, so I gave them a list of topics and pointed them towards Funko Pop. I was not disappointed
So with Christmas coming up my family asked me to make a list of the things I want, all of it adding up to a maximum of €25. Me being me I really don't know what I want other than that I would like something educational and programming related also something to learn machine learning would be nice
All help would be appreciated9
I have worked for a company where almost everyone want to leave that place. People receive gifts to compensate for being underpaid (dinners, chocolates, shirts) etc. Now they’ve just got GPTW certified. What a fuck? I can’t believe in these surveys and rankings anymore.1
It's my fucking chonky cat's (call him Cody, Chonko or fat bitch) birthday today so wish him happy birthday and send gifts 🐱🐱🐱5
I'm curious about the world : in your country, when a coworker leave the company is it in your habits to have a drink with him, give him some gifts and all ? Or what happen ?3
How do you choose gifts? my mom has a birthday in a month. I have been going to the mall for several weeks now. I can't figure out which one to choose?4
Any gift recommendations. My birthday comes up in a few days and he asked what I wanted as a birthday gift(gifts are supposed to suprises but being able to choose is good still).
However I cannot ask for electronic gadgets. That knocks a lot of stuff of. The exception is that if something does not make me spend more time on the computer that is allowed. Kinda weird. For example I can ask for a printer or medical equipment like oximeters since that wont make me spend more time on the computer. Both of these examples were given by my father. I could ask for a new printer however we still have a printer but it is currently in the shop since it is not being used and the shops printer broke and is hell to replace since they need chips to verify toners and you need to get those chips separately from what my father told me and the shops printer should be repaired in a few months since lockdown was lifted a few days ago and I won't need to print something since everything is online and they don't need to show student projects yet.
Thia knocks a lot of hardware off since by definition if I am using hardware I still need to code it to do something which is more time on computer which is not allowed. So no fiddling with aurdino or rasberry pie or whatever is the most used hardware kit.
I can buy some course or a book to learn something but I already have problems with consistently learning c# with a good book which will lose value in November and that most topics I would like to learn like computer networking or some new language are practical which is more time on computer which is not allowed.
So the only thing I can buy are some books to enjoy reading for fun or some school books like a science digest book like Together with or the ultra popular maths reference book RD Sharma
So what things should I ask which comply with the rules my father has laid or just skip this thing1
Are dating sites safe for real meetings?
Very few people who use dating sites consider them only for online communication. Most users need them to find someone for real dating. So, after an online dating stage, sooner or later, people start thinking about meeting in real life. And even if everything has been perfect and smooth and you have a great time via online chat, it doesn’t mean yet that you shouldn’t forget about safety measures. I don’t doubt the online dating safety, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, when taking a decision to move from online to real dating, you need to prepare for the first date well and thoroughly.
1. Make it formal
Even if you have been chatting online for many months, and you know probably everything about this person, including many moments of life that people usually do not share at once, you still should not rush the events, no matter how hard you want to make a huge step forward. Your first non-virtual date should be formal, no exclusions. Choose a crowded place for the first date, for example, a restaurant, cinema, exhibition, or agree to meet in a park and spend time there. Do not invite a person to your home nor accept an invitation to visit her house.
2. Inform your friends where you are going
I know that it may seem like too much for just a date, but you are going to meet a person you have never seen in real life. And informing a friend that you are going for a date with an online match is an absolutely right decision. Besides, most dating sites recommend to do it.
3. Leave if you feel uncomfortable
Your real date may significantly differ from the online ones that you had before. So, if you see that your virtual partner is not the person you know so well online, you’d better end this date. Not all online dates should go real. Sometimes, it’s better to leave things as they are and continue communication online.
4. Avoid alcohol
Do not drink alcohol on the first date. Even if you feel a bit nervous and you know that a little alcohol will help you to relax and calm down. I still recommend you to avoid drinking because you may either create a wrong image of yourself and spoil the date anyways or simply make mistakes.
So, how safe is online dating? I’d say that online dating is 100% safe in case you do not neglect the basic rules which work not only for virtual dating but also for the real-world one. Do not rush events, take your time, avoid conversations about money, do not send or buy gifts on request, and do not share personal things about you unless you are sure you know a person well enough. https://wizzlove.com1
