In case anyone missed it, you probably shouldn't be using tiktok. That said, anyone surprised by this behavior is likely generally unaware of how monetization works on social media so carry on.

I think I broke my boyfriend or did I?
He used to be one of those travelers who posted scenic photos on Instagram. He likes connecting to people from different parts of the world. Now, he said he doesn't like what he sees and wants to disconnect. He started noticing things he used to ignore before like the shops, targeted ads, bugs, the goddamn tiktok clips, etc.
One day, we turned off our video during video call. He took a screenshot several minutes later and sent me a photo that it still showed our face. I don't know if he's trolling me or what but I'm pretty sure we'll both end up in the lunatic asylum at some point and I'm not complaining.
After all, I've seen him watch a Resident Evil gameplay with a pocket knife beside him. He said it was to cut a banana but I'll entertain myself and imagine it was PTSD from Warhammer necron-like zombies from Afghanistan.16 -
Dad walks up to me and says
"im reading the news right now and bill gates wants to buy tiktok for 50 BILLION DOLLARS. Why cant you make some app like that??? Cmon why are you so useless"15 -
I will only sign up for TikTok if Microsoft successfully buys it, then rebrands it as something like Microsoft Audio/Video Social Gallery 2020 (Community Edition)8
-
TikTok's rating dropped from 4.5 to 1.3 stars in 3 days in India. TikTok owners surely will be cursing the stupid TikToker who waged the war between TikTok and Youtube xD25

You look like someone who unironically puts “JSON” on their resume as one of programming languages they know.
You probably have casual pictures of Dan Abramov saved on your phone.
Now go finish your top 10 coding productivity lifehacks insta tiktok, or go adjust your standing desk one more time, or go type on your custom mechanical keyboard (which probably has different switches for functional keys. Should I call the keys “functional” if a person like this is the only person who presses them though?)
Yeah, you’re a rockstar. Yeah, that next medium article you’ll write is gonna make you famous. Yeah.13 -
According to the report of Reuters: The United States Navy banned the social media app TikTok from government-issued mobile devices, saying the popular video app represented a "cybersecurity threat." A bulletin issued by the Navy on a Facebook page saying users of government issued mobile devices who had TikTok and did not remove the app would be blocked from the Navy Marine Corps Intranet.
The Navy would not describe in detail what dangers the app presents, but Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Uriah Orland said in a statement the order was part of an effort to "address existing and emerging threats...." The U.S. government has opened a national security review of the app's owner ByteDance.10 -
Soo.. we always knew facebook is evil and manipulates aunties into some weird conspiracy theories
But finally got some reason to convince my friends and family to migrate from Whatzap (aka facebook2) to Signal or Telegram :)
Forcing users to share their information went to a complete different direction of the world is going to. Kinda of glad that this finally burst out of the tech bubble
Anyway
My question is if there are any alternatives to Instagram?
Fingers crossed tiktok is not the only other option 😅7 -
Facebook really out here copying everyone's features for their own app lmao.
First they stole stories from Snapchat and now they've made their own version of TikTok for Instagram (idk if it's on FB) and called it "Reels."
They're becoming the Apple of social media 🤭🥴20 -
Govt. of India banned Tiktok so well that it is not accessible with a VPN even when you have TikTok installed on your phone.29

!!!dev
This is !dev at all, buy I think many devs might share a similar way of thinking.
I just had a discussion with a friend. He told me that he donated 100.- to a poor family he met in Thailand and told me about how good he feels because of that.
I told him that I’ve been donating regularly for the last 8 years and that it’s not about how you feel but about the change you made.
We argued for a while and I realized that I’m using my past donations not only to convince him but to win the argument..
I used my deeds to my own benefit, so I’m no better than the TikTok Bitches showing their bodies for likes..
I’m deeply disappointed in myself.10 -
I was just watching a web series on X: the generation that changed the world, and damn!! Those X-ers (people born b/w 1961-1981 ) have really made changes that disrupted the whole world! Comparing to them, i feel like we millennials haven't made anything *that* disruptive.
- calculators happened which evolved to computers and then began a crave for knowledge and technology
- Netscape gave a new use to computers
- Tim Berners lee ,napster disrupted the way of sharing data.
- Google changed the way of searching.
- Amazon gave the true business value to internet.
- The revolution of music , hip hop and television.
- ...
(And these are just the first 2 episodes!)
Btw what do we millennials bachieved? Tiktok, heartbreaks, and porn fetishes :/9 -
ON PERSONALIZATION: I'm so conditioned into not allowing non-algorithmic recommendations (i.e., from friends) to reshape my taste profile that I watch YouTube & TikTok videos sent to me only on the web & in Incognito Mode so they won't influence my recommender's suggestions.
At scale - especially with the volume of stuff that I get everyday from actual people - it has a noticeable effect. it basically negates the benefit of true personalization, because what my friends send me is interesting to THEM, not necessarily ME.2 -
So my endpoint management has started flagging up tiktok as containing malware, specifically hiddad.b can anyone confirm this? Anyone got a decent antivirus on their android ?4

Indians are misusing their power of population. With that much population we can do much better things but we are just down voting apps.
Every platform has good and bad content. TikTok has good content too if you follow right profiles.
PS: Earlier I liked when govt. ban TikTok in India but after using it, I realised it has good content too with some bad one and it is true for every platform.9 -
So Facebook was apparently inflating the video views stats.
I'm have a doubt that the view counts on tiktok is also massively inflated to get people hyped.
I mean on tiktok, you can see videos with hundreds of thousands of views but barely any comments or interactions.2 -
I used to think that I can understand things and logics behind them preety well, until I came to knew that ByteDance ( parent company of tiktok and vigo video ) is more valued than Uber.
Seriously, this is the first time I'm seeing a company which serves entertainment is above than the company which is solving legit global problem.4 -
petition to bad anyone to posts a tik tok on devRant
i feel like it's almost inevitably going to happen. please god no5 -
How do companies move forward with respect to a project? I know its mostly about fulfilling the demands of user and copying competition's features, but what amazes me is that some companies make some truly unthinkable moves and becomes a point of sensation.
For eg tiktok. Tiktok was just a musical video app at first , a ridiculous rip-off of dubsmash and other semi successful apps. But it kept improving its core while adding creative features and today its a hit . They fucking mixed games with videos, who would have thought?! Before tiktok, people were just trying to make video streaming professional and useful... Skype never thought of experimenting with games, and Google has always been terrible in social media area .
It might be just me lacking the taste of creativity.
Even Facebook is a little creative, but most of their creativeness seems to come with either copying or buying the competition. Like, today only what'sapp is something that looks a little different from the rest of their apps , and they are trying too hard to even make that part of their homogeneous media pack.
But seriously tho, is it the developers who think of crazy ideas? Or some completely irrelevant senior official with no knowledge of what is and isn't possible with current stacks? Where do they get the inspiration?2 -
The stuff around America and Tiktok is just amazing. Such app can be perfectly reviewed to prevent spionage. No need for a violent takeover at all. Having an account there already reveals your biggest secret anyway: you're into dancing young girls 😂 What a content 😂
But seriously, isn't the takeover behavior not very weird?7 -

What do people need? What will be the requirements of future?
App development, webdev, blockchain,.. snapchat, tiktok, insta... These are all just careers and apps whose sole purpose is to engage people with their phones... Every new app/website in the market wants to make the youngest of the young and oldest of the old to keep their eyes fixed on this glass screen for as long as they can... For the current decade, this has been the most successful market and profitable scheme of business in the world, leaving other careers like medical, astronomy, mechanics., Etc far behind.
So is this the future? In the next generation too we will be having users who are addicted to smaller and smaller and larger and larger screens, with their spectacle width thickening ... Or are we going to shift to some other form of business?3 -
Sometimes i feel being bad and wrong is better than being good. At least people will not demean you.
Case A : the bad guy
F : Hey man how are you doing?
Me : nothing man just smoking weed and being high all day
F : ugh . Ok i have to go
Case B : the good giy
F :hey man how are you doing?
Me : Awesome man! I have been learning and making apps for last 2 years, recently released this very nice ui notes app with unique notification capability. Took me a month but am so proud of it.
F1 : just the notes app? I made a tiktok clone in 1 month after learning android
Me : :'(
F2 : notes app? I made this awesome *small butunique app idea* app that got 50k installs
Me: :''(
F3 : 2 years? In 2 years i have learned so much that i can now make this puny notes app in ios Android website all synced up in 5 different frameworks with 10 additional features.
Me- ;''(
F4 : cool app. So now can you make this *random idea* app for me? Here are the designs and resources You seem experienced,How long would it take you?
Me : umm i guess so.. idea seems plausible, but i haven't worked on some things that are needed to complete it. So... x days?
F4 : X DAYS?!! wtf man ? Don't you know how to code? Does this looks like a task of x days? You even an engineer bro? Make it in 3 days
Me :
(Ps : replace F with friends , managers , ... Everyone :/)2 -
So I have recently joined a company that is very different from the usual exploitive "you are hired. make me the next tiktok in 4 hours" culture.
I would often rant about those and like how i am uncomfortable in an environment like that.
But here I am finding a problem of being too free. Like, they hired me to work on their product, have given me ample time to look into the code and get familiar with it, and poof , they are gone. The codebase is huge and I feel like lost in a big library with millions of books(analogy to their modules and inheritance classes) .
They did took a meeting once and cleared a little of my doubts, but after that nothing. I also know that from monday, they are going o give me tasks and i am freaking out about it. In the code, I would read 4 lines and on the 5th line there would be something that i do not understand or have used before. Problems are coming up with respect to my gaps in basics, knowledge of advance libraries and architectural knowledge.
I tried to find some direction, like I tried to follow the code from the start point of the app, but there is so much inheritance that its 2 days and i haven't been able to see the full code behind a very basic , single screen.
Please help, what should I do? I feel like there should be someone to tell me what code is working and how, but I don't even know whom to take this query to , or if they would be willing to do that or just tell me to "shut up, you spoonfed baby" and fire me6 -
I'd rather expose my data to TikTok than have the US government completely ban them here. What a joke.15
