What a great way to start your day and begin your fucking 2018
The cat just pissed on my laptop (it’s a macbook air)
Wet af
Stink af
Dried the fucking wet stink af laptop
It still works
But the fans gone crazy and slow af
Trying to reset the smc stuff
Nothing changes, still retarded
I want to open the bottom case but i dont have the screw driver
With its fucking limited 128gb storage i store my shits in cloud storages like google drive, dropbox and mega and my projects are stored in bitbucket so nothing to lose
Me : 1 vs Cat : 1
To my beloved cat:
I work hard using this damn laptop to provide food and home for you and you just take a piss on it.16 -
I just travelled roughly 10 years back in time. How? By crossing the border from the Netherlands to Germany. My mobile connection jumped from constant 4G to H / Edge / no connection at all, The wifi, where present is slow af. And I can't pay by card anymore as I'm used to. And most of all: The loading speed of DevRant is so slow with this data connection that I wanna rant about it itself, but I can't, since I don't have any goddamn connection >_<48

I just can't understand what will lead an so called Software Company, that provides for my local government by the way, to use an cloud sever (AWS ec2 instance) like it were an bare metal machine.
They have it working, non-stop, for over 4 years or so. Just one instance. Running MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, PHP and an f* Tomcat server with no less than 10 HUGE apps deployed. I just can't believe this instance is still up.
By the way, they don't do backups, most of the data is on the ephemeral storage, they use just one private key for every dev, no CI, no testing. Deployment are nightmares using scp to upload the .war...
But still, they are running several several apps for things like registering citizen complaints that comes in by hot lines. The system is incredibly slow as they use just hibernate without query optimizations to lookup and search things (n+1 query problems).
They didn't even bother to get a proper domain. They use an IP address and expose the port for tomcat directly. No reverse proxy here! (No ssl too)
I've been out of this company for two years now, it was my first work as a developer, but they needed help for an app that I worked on during my time there. I was really surprised to see that everything still the same. Even the old private key that they emailed me (?!?!?!?!) back then still worked. All the passwords still the same too.
I have some good rants from the time I was there, and about the general level of the developers in my region. But I'll leave them for later!
Is it just me or this whole shit is crazy af?3 -
FKING. LANDLORD. FKING LANDLORD THINKS MY LAN CABLE SLOWS THE FKING INTERNET BACK TO THE 1990s.
- Prologue
I'm renting at a place that looks good af. But the fking wifi is so slow, 80% of the time you can't even send an empty http request.
- Chapter 1
Okay, maybe it's my laptop. *plugs in cable*. Now the requests fail 10% of the time. Better than nothing. 2 hours later, gets a text saying other housemates are having slow internet because of me. FUCK. Unplugs, LAN cable, uses mobile data and cries to sleep.
- Chapter 2
Tries again after a few days. Barely uses the internet (I'm only using it to play games, not even download it and I used more than this with a 2mbps internet). No videos, no music, just small data exchange with a low ping. GETS A FKING TEXT AGAIN
- CHAPTER 3
My sis comes over and complains that the net is slow af. Plugs in LAN cable while no one is around, everything is fine. Sis leaves, I roll up my end of the LAN cable in my room but leave the cable plugged in on the outside of the room. Next morning, it's unplugged. Plugged it back in before I go to work and when I come back, guess what? ITS FKING UNPLUGGED. AGAIN. AND IM NOT EVEN USING IT.
SOMEONE PLEASE STOP ME FROM GOING ON A RAMPAGE SHOVING THE FKING CABLE AND THE ROUTER UP PEOPLE'S ASSES. LAN FUCKING CABLES DONT SLOW THE INTERNET BACK TO THE PREVIOUS CENTURY. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE NOT EVEN PLUGGED IN ON THE OTHER SIDE. FUCK.23 -
Tech support for Friend...
Again...
Ok...
A friend ran down the hallway to my Appartement, I opened the door for him and asked him "What The Fuck... Is wrong with you?!" He was just coughing like...
My... Laptop.... Is... Slow...
When he then eventually came to the point where he could Breath normally again I asked him to login into his by then super with shitty software bloated PC... It was a mess... A Desktop full of Shit... only Shit... I
then opened Chrome and Task Manager...
and holy shit... EVERYTHING! Literally ANYTHING was under 100% Load... Yet his shitty Fans werent spinning up... Shutdown the Laptop and opened it... not to my surprise it was full of Dust... I cleaned it and booted it again... still 100% Load... I couldnt do shit without being bombarded with porn and Hentai Ads... So... I asked him "Did you make any backups to this machine?" He was like.. "*Really long explenation* No *Really long Explenation*"
Great... i thought to myself... Then I said to him his PC was so trash that i only could Reset it to 0... He was like DO ANYTHING YOU CAN LITERALLY ANYTHING!
I then explained him, Resetting this PC Means literally 0 A Fresh start, nothing of your data will be there literally nothing...
He again Was like DO IT!
So I did... When it was done i showed him the result... He FREAKED OUT LIKE THE WORLD WAS GOING TO FUCKING END, HE SCREAMED AT ME WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE? REVERSE IT! REVERSE IT NOW!
I Then said to him, I reset it to 0, I said this would happen...
He then took his now perfectly running Laptop and Ran away...
tl;dr
Tech support for friend, Reset PC to 0, Freaked out AF...4 -
Me: Updates my debian.
Nautilus: Is slow af.

Me 10 sec after installing: Holy jumping jesus on a breadstick there's a lot of shortcuts.8 -
TL;DR Was told to run ethernet trough ceiling with like 20 live wires and internet was down in 2 days. Yelled at "boss" and rerun it and teacher thanked us for yelling at him.
Had to run ethernet cable across school today. Me and 3 of my classmates (We are team at school which helps with tech and runs entire school internet basically) were sent to do it (ofcourse) and they told us to run it trough ceiling. OK no problem. I grab latter. WTF ? I see around 20 live wires (Isolated luckily). I ask how can i run it there since eth will not like live wires at 220V. They said to just do it.
We asked for shielded eth. Nope not getting it. Unshielded it must be.
We all knew the internet wasnt gonna be great but hey we were doing as they told us.
We did it.
Connect it and test it.
Speeds are horrific but OK fuck it.
2 days later we get call (Yes we even got a phone LOL) saying that the internet stopped working or is extremly slow. We go and test it. Indeed slow AF. Before we ran the ethernet we checked how much EM is in the ceiling. It was high but OK.
I got the idea to check again.
HOLY shit. It was literally out of scale 20 cm from the ceiling. Oh fuck.
We learnt that the backup generator charges every few days for few hours.
At the time we ran it it wasnt charging and some wires were off so it was OK but now it was charging and it was drawing a lot of power.
So after call to the idiot that told us to run it in ceiling and crash course for him about ethernet and EM and that he is an idiot we gave him 2 options. Either rerun the internet and drill like 20 holes or buy shielded cable but with that high EM (Eth is like 3cm from live wires) even shielded woudlnt help i suppose.
So we rerun it where there was almost no EM and used shielded (FTP cable) just to be sure. Oh would you look at that. Full speed as its supposed to be.
Everybody at school hates that idiot who told us to run it there and when we came to our room teacher was waiting and just told us that finally somebody said something to that idiot.
Bloody amazing feeling.9 -
This is so true!
Too many companies in the past years have been focusing on moving rendering to the client, and not optimizing their webpages that we lost sight of making efficient and fast websites.8 -
Who's gonna win? A dd command with a Windows 10 iso to a 1.0 usb connected with a hub or a human life span?7

> 14 years old
> Read about worms
> Making virus sounds cools
> Decided to make one
> Dreamed how I would use it on my friends
> Made a "virus" that looks for all the exe files and append "malicious" content
> Ended up messing my own system
This story makes me feel that I was
1) dumb
2) slow af( took me days to read/write properly)
One of those has changed now 😜4 -
The best way to check if the bar is moving, it to use the magnifier on windows, also, not my computer, but really nostalgic, lol3
-
I swear my ISP has already done away with net neutrality. My connection is always going out whenever I need to look something up for work.3

Before going home, decided to do an upgrade from ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04...
Leave it to do its charm.
*a morning later*
See laptop on off state, "hmm..."
Turning in on, *press power buton*
Booting... Purple-ish screen appear.. Nothing happened for 20 minutes.
"fck."
Hard reboot, going to grub menu,
1. Ubuntu*
2. Advance option
Choose ubuntu.
Booting...
"root mount not found, bla bla bla
Kernel panic..."
"fck."
15 chrome tabs later (on mobile),
Do something on shit...
Finally proceed to login screen.
Insert password, enter.
Loading... Blank... 3 seconds later, tadaaa.. Going back to login screen.
Do it trice, I'm stuck at login screen.
"fck."
20 chrome tabs later,
Finally got in. Have a "what's new" screen.
Ok, feels different... But its slow af. Hmm maybe reboot will do something.
Rebooting...
Login screen, insert password, enter..
3 seconds later..
Bam. Going back to login screen...
"fck."
Another chrome tabs later... Resolved the issue.
And finally I can take a breath, but still has a headache because of little thing likes:
1. Right click not working
2. Workspace not work as expected likes in 16.04
3. Screenshot behavior
4. No animation When moving a window to another workspace.
When almost anything is solved and I'm ready to do my works, I just realised something..
I just wasted 4 hours of my workday.
"fck."10 -
Today in PE i sprained my finger and now my coding/typing speed is slow af. It took <s>my ages</s> 5 minutes to write this rant.3

TL;DR My parents should have known that I was made for computers
Note: I am pretty young. Most of you were probably at least as old as I am now when it happened.
My parents told me about the first time I used a PC. They left me and my older siblings home alone with a movie on and returned later than they wanted to. We were still watching the movie, and when they asked how that was possible we told them that I restarted the DVD twice. I had never touched a computer before.
The first thing I actually remember is me playing Age of Empires II on a PC our family got for free somewhere. Although AoE3 was already out by that time, it ran slow af, but it was the most fun I had in my life up to that point. I was and still am pretty bad in both AoE3 and AoE2, but that was the first step into my preference for RTS games. -
ME: *runs a load test for the umpteenth time*
RDS DB: *is slow af: HI contentions*
ME: "dear AWS support, I see the RDS has troubles writing to disk as THIS db exhibits 10x higher W latencies than THAT OTHER db we have. Both are identical, apps are identical."
AWS: "Hello, I hope you have a good day. After the investigation that took us almost 2 weeks, we can confirm that there are 10x higher IO latencies to disks: [CloudWatch link]. We also see a high load average during your tests.
We recommend investigating the high load average and tuning your queries along with the database.
I hope this helps, good day."
ME: *are you seriously calling this PREMIUM support package....?*1 -
Having an app doesn't give you a free pass to have a website that works horribly on mobile.
I'm looking at you, Mint.1 -
Database is being slow AF again. Team lead is investigating. This is happening more often lately and affects both production and dev because everything is just in one gigantic database. So clients are calling support being angry about the speed they get and us devs get to twiddle our thumbs while waiting for our own data to load.8

FUCK reddit
Seriously fuck reddit. I just wanted to post a fucking Question but noooo you must have Karma to post it. Your account has to be old af. Which dickhead designed the god damn karma system???? I'll never try to use that fuckin platform again, the user experience is horrible and their official app is absolute trash. It's slow and buggy, even a fucking 12 year old can code a better client.
Argghhhh I am angry15 -
Learning morse code.
I knew it few years ago using the fucking symbols.
I was slow AF.
Now using new method and using sounds its much faster to learn and much easier. Here i come morse code !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!3 -
In my shitty country they are going to cut off internet connexion which is usually slow af because of a fucking international exam I don't know how the fuck they approved this
Fuck this asshole country FML
I want to get out of here so bad7 -
Everyone here who complains about slow Android studio obviously never tried to compile LLVM/Clang from source.3

I really don't want to do adult shit tomorrow. I really hate mondays. Shit is slow af in the office since everyone is on meh mode.
Not only that but tomorrow I have to go on an 1 hour drive to the other campus (I work at a college) to ensure that one of our products is good to go (its not, but it aint my fault or the lead developer, shit is from a different era and the programmer that made it was beyond crappy...we have not been given time to update) and just.....just no ok?
I sometimes hate being an adult. Sure, its got some perks....the only thing that comes to mind is sex right now but I am sure there are more.
Just.....ok? -
After 20 mins, the system is just sitting there idle doing nothing but data transfer.
Is this a common problem with manjaro? Unbelievably slow data transfer1 -
Anyone have any idea why release downloads from GitHub is slow af?!
It is not a network issue on my end.
Any ideas?2 -
In my early days of web development I was on the lookout for a good PHP IDE and stumbled upon Komodo IDE. Never in my life have I asked for a refund so fast. Crashed at the most random times, such as when opening files and folders. Even accessing the settings could cause it to crash. Besides that I found it slow af.3
-
When your PC is slow af cause of the hard disk so you make a dumb decision and change your hard disk with a new one and you gotta install Windows on it but you only have very old images of it so it requires a special USB driver to install the system and THEN you realise the setup image has NO DRIVERS for ethernet, wlan OR usb so you can do absolutely NOTHING with your fresh system so you decide to install linux instead but you realise YOU'VE REMOVED ALL X64 IMAGES BECAUSE YOU'RE FUCKING DUMB SO you prepare a bootable Kali USB to copy basic drivers and DriverBooster into the hard disk to install them on Windows.
AND THEN YOUR FRIENDS CALL YOU AND TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE 2 EXAMS TOMORROW BUT YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE THE COMPUTER SO YOU JUST GO FUCKING KILL YOURSELF
This is why I HATE MY LIFE SO MUCH IT GOES SO WRONG !!!!4 -
I haven't tried developing any Android project in a while but once I did, holy effff Android Studio is soooooo frustrating! Even on a 7th gen i7 (granted U version) 16 GB of RAM laptop it's slow AF. But I heard a lot of people saying that it's not bad and works well even on 6 GB of RAM. What's your setup for a good experience developing with Android Studio?8
-
I just love optimizing stuff and here is my story I think somehow is very cool as you can see the progress just looking at two values.
//NOTE: This api relies on another api which is slow af. The requests are done here directly but later will be carried out async and in the background by using some ticket system.
1) First PoC
2) Used caching of requests and improved method to filter out unnecessary stuff
3) Optimized response formatting
NOTE to myself: Things are going too good...4 -
What the actual motherfucking fuck? What have I done so bad in my previous life to get this shit? Did I slay little cute puppies?
So I got a call from the client and he argued about how slow the system runs or that it happens that the copy commands fails.
It sounded interessting and I didn't know in what kind of rabbithole I'm going through.
The system is always in the year 2012 (don't ask why, it's just hardcoded ... another rant story).
Some of you maybe know that bug because it was very popular.
Wayne train, let's continue -> I saw that the copy command fails sometimes and that the system has a high CPU usage and futex lockups. Pretty strange and doesn't seem obivous why that is.
Sadly there are no logs in the system (not implemented and again ... another.fucking.rant.story.)
The system is kinda old and to patch it would mean to port shitty written programs and I don't have the time for that..
After searching and testing for weeks I finally found the fucking fuckidi fucked up problem.
A WRONG IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOTCHERFUCKING LEAPSECOND CAUSED THIS SHITTY SHIT. A.FUCKING.LEAPSECOND. In all this time I questioned my OWN FUCKING SANITY! NOT EVERY FUCKING MINUTE HAS 60 SECONDS. THERE ARE SOME WITH 61!!
WHAT.THE.ACTUCAL.FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.........
I'm just mad af. It's such a release to find the solution but it's so fucked up you just wanna jump of a bridge
Here if you are interested about this bullshit: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/... -
My complete day consists out of waiting for CircleCI. Why the hell is it slow af today?
I feel like playing fuckin Hay Day and am waiting for my carrots to sprout. -
I'm creating a modified MEAN(MSSQL,Express,Angular,Node)
website as much from scratch as MEAN can be.
Since I've never worked with any of this before I am slow af. Oh and I'm working on my own.
please send help.9 -
Can anyone suggest me a Linux Distro or an Ubuntu Desktop Environment that:
- Has beautiful interface
- Is not slow
- Allows customization
I don't like Unity and Gnome because of the shit interface. I installed KDE Plasma (Kubuntu) but it's slow af and buggy.
I want something that has fast window management, Mac-like Dock, and just something that increases productivity.12 -
Every day in our standup bullshit, we have a few of our offshore team join via Skype. It always fucks up somehow, bad connection, quiet volume or dropped connections, all of which are quite hilarious but today a new benchmark was set.
We (the humans physically there) all did our standup, then it was over to the offshore team.
A voice came out of the speakers which sounded like someone had applied an effect to a spoken mp3 which slowed it down to about 10% speed. It was deep AF and slow AF and I couldn't speak properly after it for approximately 40 minutes 😂
My eyes were all red and puffy from literally crying with laughter.
Best. Standup. Ever. -
Any programming font suggestions? I want to use Fira Code for its ligature but Sublime don't have support for ligature, I tried it working in VSCode but it's slow af compared to Sublime11
-
My laptop was at 500% of course usage and ram... Wtf...
Had to stay till 1am because I was debugging a microservice system with 15 services, 3 databases and a full mail server. Freaking integration tests took all night to build and run. Don't have a remote server to run this on because the guy is sick. Arghhhhhh8 -
Just finished installing and configuring Arch on a USB drive - because fuck waiting 20m for Windows to boot and log in on slow af college laptops.
-
I ranted about my new laptop and linux mint on it https://devrant.com/rants/1919501 and I said there will be a rant about the OSs I tried
So my new laptop is the Xiaomi notebook pro, with the highest config: i7/16g/256g/mx150 gpu/alu body/10h battery/perfect keyboard/great screen. Its Chinese, but Xiaomi... you kinda expect flaws, problems, but i watched all the reviews and knew about all the things, and the price was 35% down (836 + taxes = 997EUR) for a macbook pro clone? its a no brainer.. but i had a rattling vent (fixed with shoe glue lol) now its just loud in windows but not in linux, strange
I changed the Chinese windows on it to EN... worked perfect... but... It has 2 slots for NVMe ssd so i bought a 500gb one for the second slot, I put windows on that (because games, occasional insta story video edit, big files, anyway...) and put Ubuntu on the 256gb original ssd.. (to develop on that) and it was slow as fuck, I got errors all over the places, problems I never had before with ubuntu.. and mind you Windows had over 3000 MB/s for read and almost 2000 MB/s for write speeds on that disk... I was disappointed af. MIND YOU all my life I had Ubuntu on secondary old/slow laptops/pcs working JUST FINE... I still don't know what the fuck happened.. the ui was choppy to say the least and I just was not ready to accept that on this HW while windows worked like a charm (yuck)
Then I went with Manjaro (based on arch, here on devrant people like that stuff, must be great)... well after I installed it, it booted up to the login page and black screen... something with the MX150 GPU according to the interwebs... by this time I was so frustrated and in time stress because of my flight home for xmas that I decided not to fix Manjaro but to go with another flavour
Linux Mint it is... everything kinda works out of the box, like they say... it has dark mode everywhere in the settings without downloading some bloated theme or plugin like on other flavours. So I sticked with Linux Mint. Im not saying its perfect, but I have it for like a month now and all its flaws are these small irrelevant settings not working, utilities like the battery showing funny numbers in the post I linked in the beginning.
Other than this I want to ask you guys. In all 3 distros I tried, they all had text scaling issues everywhere (os, apps, web). I think I have a regular fullHD display, its sharp, but I mean... I never expected resolution or scaling issues or things like that. On Windows I never had those scaling issues... other than the famous win10 "blurry apps"3 -
yesterday i worked a bit on my sites, checked again today to find them slow af. checked for flaws and recursions, did not find any. google page speed insights were totally fine. then i tried with my mobile connection and it was really fast. wtf vodafone?!
(speedcheck for dsl was fine)4 -
My first CS class is a basic introductory C++ course. Won't even be going into OOP.
So I want to use my own laptop for the course, but I have a Mac. Thought I could use Visual Studio for Mac for the class, but turns out Visual Studio for Mac is really only for Multiplatform development with C#. Ok, then, screw that. Just wasted 20GB and an evening installing that just to uninstall it.
I'm using JetBrain's CLion for now, but apparently we'll be doing some graphics work later this semester so I'm going to need to install Windows via Bootcamp and Visual Studio there... but my SSD is too small...
I currently have Windows/Bootcamp installed on a 1TB external hard disk but that is slow af. My SSD is only 250GB and I've already used half of it for various programs I need (Adobe crap plus Logic crap cuz I make videos and music).
My only option here is to buy a new SSD but only one manufacturer sells those (OWC), and a 1TB SSD is stupid expensive, $700 almost as much as I paid for this laptop used.
So, I guess I'm just kinda deciding right now whether upgrading storage is really worth it...6 -
Am I the only one having trouble with kde archives today? Either it does not work at all, or it is slow af.
-
Is docker even suitable for anything that isn't deployment?
So much time, so much effort, so much trial and error, and I still feel like I don't know what Docker is for.
I had a development VirtualBox machine, which I used just to compile my code and test my application. So I said "why don't I just use Docker? It would be way simpler". Also because that fucking Virtualbox image was like 10GB, and it was slow af.
The VirtualBox machine wasn't created by me, but it was just given to me by a previous developer, so I just had to imagine what I needed and pick up the pieces. In few hours I was ready with my Dockerfile.
So I tried it, and....... obviously it didn't work. I entered inside my container and I tried to manually execute commands in order to see where it breaks, and I tried to fix each of them. They were just the usual Linux dependencies problems, incompatibility among libraries, and so on.
Putting everything in order, I started over again with a virgin Ubuntu image, and I tried to fix every single error that appeared, I typed something like 1 hundred commands just to have my development machine up and running.
Now I have a running container that works, I don't know how to reproduce it with a Dockerfile, and I don't know what I'm supposed to do with it, because I'm afraid that any wrong command could destroy the container and lose all the job I did. I can't even bind folders because start/exec doesn't support bindings, so I've to copy files.
Furthermore, the documentation about start/exec is very limited, and every question on StackOverflow just talks about deployment. So am I wrong? Did I use containers for something that wasn't their main purpose? What am I supposed to do now? I'm lost, I feel so much stupid.
Just tell me what to do or call a psychologist8 -
So I just refreshed LinkedIn and it has a new look.
It's so bad I can now remember Microsoft bought LinkedIn a couple of months back every time I look at it1 -
IBM cognos, it'd take hours to install make everything in my system slow af and it being the express version you can't do shit other than work with the data already provided.
-
I have actually two, but I'll write the other one in the week.
So we had classes about software engineering. The class was interesting but the teacher wasn't. Too soft, too slow, too low, too monochord (usual french), it was boring. So we ended up not listening to him. Kinda regret this.
We got a first exam, where we were in group to develop a Test Manager for Unit Test (yep.)
We had instructions, like the note would be multiplied by the percentage of coverage of code, etc.
The thing is, we really didn't get the point of the project. Now that I think of it, it seems obvious, but it wasn't back then as it was too new. In the four people of our group, one worked real hard on it, I tried to do my best, the others too.
But like I said, I didn't get back then the point of the topic, which is to apply design pattern, unit testing, etc. It was furstating af and we ended up with a 9/20.
I got the point of the topic only for the second exam, the most classic one, on a paper sheet with questions to answer. (We were allowed only one cheatsheet, I understood the topic while doing it. Sad, huh ?)
