Bob?
Yeah?
Bob, could you hand me that paperclip?
Sure mate!
Thanks.
Oh... Bob?
Uhhh... yeah?
Could you also hand me that paperclip?
Right... sure, of course.
Thanks.
Bob?
What?
Could you also hand me the next paperclip?
Fuck off, why don't I just give you the whole fucking box!
Yeah Bob, please, throw the whole fucking box.
Wait, is that a printed screenshot of my code you're attaching the paperclips to?
It sure is, Bob.16 -

I hate when I go on stack overflow to find an answer, and all the comments for the correct answer say, "awesome thanks!", "Works perfectly now, thanks!". While I sit staring at my screen feeling like a complete idiot because I don't understand the given answer at all!13

Dear Apple,
Fuck you.
Sincerely,
A bored developer forced to build and deploy with a virtualized OSX.10 -
My roommate use torrent to download games, movies and series on an 8mb connection 24/7 even when he's sleeping. I a lot of times asked him nicely not to do that while I'm working or use speed limiter so it won't cause any problem for us, once in a while is okay but not every day. But people like him don't listen.
>Now i just disabled utorrent port associated with his IP every time he goes out or go to sleep. That what you get from being a self servings duche bag7 -
After 4 months I've just realised that my internet is not running higher than 100mpbs because I bought a 100mbps Ethernet switch. -facepalm-6

What an I doing with my life? What's the meaning of all the efforts? What if I'll make a perfect own project?..
Oh, great, IDE is finally booted on!4 -
You want to know what really grinds my gears?
When you are about to tap on some link or whatever on your phone and the app/website with its 8th sense sees that and right before you touch the touch screen, it either moves the content or displays an advertisement so you inADvertently tap it instead of what you wanted to tap.
I hope the people responsible for this sorcery get mutilated and eaten by a horde of zombified liliputs.2 -
Making a meme to pass the time...
All this waiting, only because I wanted to try one small thing -.-
Oh boy, JPEG compression strikes again...
Wish I could upload pngs. Then I could use alpha channel too.4 -
Thank you, dear freelancer who got assigned to our enterprise Angular2 project, for being too damn slow to eventually get fired, and for leaving my boss no choice but to give it to me (I work full time).
Over the course of the next 2 months, the following will happen -
+ I will repeatedly reappreciate the fact that I get to FINALLY use some ES6 with a bunch of complementary tooling and get rid of jQuery once and for all (most of the time, being a dev in a project company isn't that fancy and fulfilling)
+ I will get some more much-needed experience to help me land my next job, after being rejected by numerous companies because I lack full time working experience with newer libraries/frameworks, after learning these at home but without actual need in the workplace
+ I will be wishing that you'd get a lifetime of diarrhea because of -
A. leaving me with this incoherent, disgusting pile of unoptimized builds (yay, an 8MB bundle.js file!) which I'll have to sort out eventually as well
B. Having done tasks that should take 2 weeks in 3 months
C. Leaving me with insane amounts of components, logic and Angular2 (bleh) (I'm a React fanboy, ew Angular) mess to deal with, having only 2 months to get everything done (since you've completed maybe 10% of your tasks that should have taken 4 months)
+ Thank you repeatedly in my head, again, for sucking at what you do so I can improve and get better.
❤3 -
Guys. Seriously. Take this banner down. I kind of cared -- a WHOLE YEAR AGO.
This isn't the place of modern front end dev. You're obsolete. (This is almost as bad as the Angular 2 rollout!)24 -
I have to make this a separate rant.
It's been going on for months, and I don't have alternatives.
This.
This is what I pay 35€ per month for. Every evening it's like this. Usually it can't even load the speed test. Right now it can't even load the upload meter.
A big FUCK YOU to Vodafone in Berlin. Giant ass FUCK YOU, for just promises and appalling service.35 -

Sometimes I feel really bad becouse i am incapable of coding faster.
I saw someone coding a prototype of pong in 5 minutes.
It took me 30 minutes just to make the constructor function of the paddles8 -
Guys... I think... I think it's finally starting to sink in. I'm having one of those moments where languages start to make sense. When you *get it* and things slot together.
It took going over regex again in Python (and not spending my time between learning other stuff) but I'm finally getting it.
IT'S HAPPENING!5 -
My boss needed me to run a quick PoC a Raspberry Pi (3B+) for him. Don't worry about imaging the SDC, he says. He will do it, he says.
I guess he had an old Raspbian image file sitting around in his downloads folder or something. Cause this this is seriously out of date.
`sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y`
....
....
....
168 packages need to be updated, need to fetch 600MB in archives.
Oh, look at that. It's not Lite, its the full version. So I gotta either sit here and purge all the unnecessary packages, or just wait as Wolfram updates.
So I watch some youtube, still updating.
I wash the dishes, still updating.
I take a coffee break, still updating.
Text the fiance, still upgrading.
Yes, even as I post this, it's still upgrading.
All the packages are downloaded at least, but they're still installing. And I'll probably need to reboot after since there are firmware/udev updates and my PoC requires USB + GPIO pins.
At this point, it would have been faster to just re-image the card.

I always thought android people were just a little bit whiny, but now that I'm developing an app in my free time I feel you.1
-
When I was a young boy and I was writing my first programs, I remember I was sad because they were fast, unlike other applications I used daily and admired, with their long splash screens and the hard drive constantly making noise whenever you performed an action. At that time for me, 'slow' meant 'serious'.
It's fun to see how things have changed today: ensuring performance is a critical part of my job, and DAMMIT WHY HASN'T THE WEB PAGE LOADED YET?!?2 -
Someone: How was your day?
Me: When your Net is soo slow that the error message shown for it loads slower. -
"The hardest part in programming is installing what you need."-the guy that almost threw it's PC out of the window because he spent 2 hours installing the wrong version of opencv3

So I've been using this website that loads terribly and after sending the dev some emails on how he should reduce the amount of page requests to reduce the load time, I got this response. Anyone with moodle experience care to explain why one should have 200+ css requests before a page loads?13

Steps to work on android studio -
1] Open android studio
2] Wait for an hour.
3] Wait for the build.
4] Build failed.
5] Get frustrated, close it.
6] Repeat 1-5.10 -
I am having murderous feeling and wanting to throw everything around me. The fucking internet is slower than a dickless dude to get erection.3

My Android Studio couldn't build Gradle even after fuckin' 42 minutes. Finally I had to force stop it.8
-
I work slow and my work is delayed all because you keep on changing the design and the UX, adding more features and yet keeping the same deadline
-
Forgot to push to stable branch before I left from work. Nightly build takes 5 hours so I needed to do that in order to get nightly in the morning. As I'm moving I have only cellphone with 16k internet at home. Sounded like I'm screwed. But luckily fetching few new commits and pushing them back to correct branch git managed even over this parody of internet connection. Love git, I'm saved. Whole repo has few hundred megs, if I had to download everything it would be faster to wait to get real internet connection in few days.1
-
Why does visual studio take so long to uninstall? Is it because they want to give me time to hit that cancel button?8
-
The best way to check if the bar is moving, it to use the magnifier on windows, also, not my computer, but really nostalgic, lol3

Saw a website having an image with resulution `4828x3265`, as the background, that too in a slider with multiple images that densities that high.4

Consumers ruined software development and we the developers have little to no chance of changing it.
Recently I read a great blog post by someone called Nikita, the blog post talks mostly about the lack of efficiency and waste of resources modern software has and even tho I agree with the sentiment I don't agree with some things.
First of all the way the author compares software engineering to mechanical, civil and aeroespacial engineering is flawed, why? Because they all directly impact the average consumer more than laggy chrome.
Do you know why car engines have reached such high efficiency numbers? Gas prices keep increasing, why is building a skyscraper better, cheaper and safer than before? Consumers want cheaper and safer buildings, why are airplanes so carefully engineered? Consumers want safer and cheaper flights.
Wanna know what the average software consumer wants? Shiny "beautiful" software that is either dirt ship or free and does what it needs to. The difference between our end product is that average consumers DON'T see the end product, they just experience the light, intuitive experience we are demanded to provide! It's not for nothing that the stereotype of "wizard" still exists, for the average folk magic and electricity makes their devices function and we are to blame, we did our jobs TOO well!
Don't get me wrong, I am about to become a software engineer and efficient, elegant, quality code is the second best eye candy next to a 21yo LA model. BUT dirt cheap software doesn't mean quality software, software developed in a hurry is not quality software and that's what douchebag bosses and consumers demand! They want it cheap, they want it shiny and they wanted it yesterday!
Just look at where the actual effort is going, devs focus on delivering half baked solutions on time just to "harden" the software later and I don't blame them, complete, quality, efficient solutions take time and effort and that costs money, money companies and users don't want to invest most of the time. Who gets to worry about efficiency and ms speed gains? Big ass companies where every second counts because it directly affects their bottom line.
People don't give a shit and it sucks but they forfeit the right to complain the moment they start screaming about the buttons not glaring when hovered upon rather than the 60sec bootup, actual efforts to make quality software are made on people's own time or time critical projects.
You put up a nice example with the python tweet snippet, you have a python script that runs everyday and takes 1.6 seconds, what if I told you I'll pay you 50 cents for you to translate it to Rust and it takes you 6 hours or better what if you do it for free?
The answer to that sort of questions is given every day when "enganeers" across the lake claim to make you an Uber app for 100 bucks in 5 days, people just don't care, we do and that's why developers often end up with the fancy stuff and creating startups from the ground up, they put in the effort and they are compensated for it.
I agree things will get better, things are getting better and we are working to make programs and systems more efficient (specially in the Open Source community or high end Tech companies) but unless consumers and university teachers change their mindset not much can be done about the regular folk.
For now my mother doesn't care if her Android phone takes too much time to turn on as long as it runs Candy Crush just fine. On my part I'll keep programming the best I can, optimizing the best I can for my own projects and others because that's just how I roll, but if I'm hungry I won't hesitate to give you the performance you pay for.

For the past month my phone has been unlocking really slow. I thought it was just software or the hardware starting to fail.
I finally decided to put my Professional Googling (read: Computer Science) degree to work and instantly found out it was because I had a slow 128gb SD card in it.
Removed it and everything is tip top now.1 -

I have that friend who keeps telling me that he doesn't like java just because it's slow! (I hate this excuse).
Friend: look what java did to Android, it's because of java that iOS is faster tham Android.
Me: whaaat!! do you know that Android OS have nothing to do with java? it's C++ you...
Friend: No it's Java, we develop Android apps with java

Those corperate slow laptops which has preinstalled software on it. Especially the antivirus which decides to take up all memory to take a scan on 08:00 when you start up.
Im really close to throwing this piece if shit through the window...6 -
For our business we are paying the highest plan the ISP provides (240 mbps) but we get 110 kb/s. Wtf!! You write them, they answer “give your address”, done, “we doesn’t see any problems”, calls a friend that also uses Telenet, “do you have problems”, “yes, no internet”. What de F*** is wrong?? It’s nearly a month like that!! They really need to do something!!16

Can someone explain to me why most design like apps are build in fucking electron. This is like the second time this week.
Me: *sees a super designy looking app*
Me: *Downloads and install*
Me: *Starts* * Slow startup*
Me: This has to be fucking electron again.
Me: *looks in resources folder* YES it is.
I'm not hating on electron. Its just that native apps are so much faster but way more ugly :P
BTW, apps were laverna and hyper5 -
Mfw you try out Atom and it crashes the moment you open anything even slightly big. Then you try to close it out and reopen it but it decides it should start off right where you left it-suspended in time... doing absolutely nothing.
On another note, it looks beautiful, has many extensions, and is highly customizable but it gets bogged down so quickly.9 -
Just flashed a clean marshmallow kdz on my phone, finally running smooth after months of me raging at my phone. Hopefully I will start getting devRant push notifications now!2

The OSX Sierra update was like 10GB and took 75 minutes + two restarts to install which is bizarre because I can install Ubuntu in like 3 minutes.
Though I think it spent most of its time iterating every.single.god.damned.thing in /usr/local decided whether it needed to be moved out of the way
They don’t even give you a log of what’s going on now - just a progress bar.14 -
Unbelievably slow connection. Wanted to do speed test so I can post with proof. The connection disconnected the moment I click the "Test speed" button.

Why is everything slow in windows even if I have a 16GB memory? Maybe because not SSD? 😑
Slow to open in windows:

3 months ago our company moved 10km away from where I live. So instead of 10 minutes to work, I now have 50 minutes. Great!
The moving was so rushed, they forgot to order a fucking internet connection.. So they panicked and bought 4x 4g modems and a 50 Mbit connection. This connection was then shared by the whole office of 50 people. The connection could barely handle our needs, and for 3 months all streaming or unnecessary use of the internet have been prohibited..
But today! It finally happened!
We got our fiber connection!
No more streaming from my phone!
Bye bye productivity!
Spotify and YouTube here I come!1 -
U guys know anyone who would ask "Can I turn off this power switch?" AFTER they already turned it off? My mother did that. On a PC that was in the middle of a large file upload over a ridiculously slow internet...2

TL/DR;
Worked as outsource where Scrum was misused. Please use it as a guide rather than law.
RANT;
Just remembered working as an outsourced programmer...
The Scrum master got us all... all of us... everyday... most people on Skype too... to update with our plans, issues etc.
So including the time trying to get everyone to sync up on Skype at around 9am, introductions, updates from EVERYONE... back and forth suggestions... I'd be starting near midday.
The task was related to making a tile based menu system that was populated with items from a backend... On paper, I only really needed to talk to the 1 artist and the 1 backend guy to understand the request / responses.
But even the art assets were arbitrary sizes... untileable... at the time they even had to be power of two too... My god, getting them changed was a nightmare...
In the end I was too slow for them.
Gladly.4 -
Hello, I am new to DevRant!
I was fed up with Windows 10(broken search, start menu etc), hence I installed Ubuntu on one of my PC's.
Now the issue is that my Ubuntu System boots very slowly!
I have a Docker Container + Some apps in startup! It used to boot up very quickly IDK after a week of use it has gotten considerably slower!
Pls Halp!17 -

Database is being slow AF again. Team lead is investigating. This is happening more often lately and affects both production and dev because everything is just in one gigantic database. So clients are calling support being angry about the speed they get and us devs get to twiddle our thumbs while waiting for our own data to load.8

TLDR; sometimes I want to murder my friends.
Pratten: Hey Ethan can you image the robotics programming laptops?
Me: Yeah sure no problem. Let me just make a custom windows iso with all the software we need so I don't have to deal with installers after the fact.
Pratten: Ok great!
Me: *makes custom ISO compiles it and puts it on usbs*
Pratten: hey could you also add drivers station?
Me: uggggg... *Recreates iso and preps bootable flash drives*
Me: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED?
Pratten: nope that should do it ;;;)
Me: ok great. *flashes laptops and runs install. (they're old so it takes a while)
Pratten: ok good job thanks. Did you install *NOT PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED TOOL SUITE 1* or *NOT PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED NEWER TOLL CHAIN THAT ONLY HE KNOWS HOW TO GET* ? If not I'll have you install those later.

Dev's argument: "We use this everywhere, as long as it gets the job done! Time is money!" How ironic..
So you would rather make your processing speed suffer for the sake of saving time? No, clean code doesn't matter. No, we should not waste time spending even a mere microsecond thinking about writing better code or at least consider it. No, we should just vomit out bad code at top speed. Good idea, guys. Idiots everywhere..6 -
After 20 mins, the system is just sitting there idle doing nothing but data transfer.
Is this a common problem with manjaro? Unbelievably slow data transfer2 -
Everyone here who complains about slow Android studio obviously never tried to compile LLVM/Clang from source.3

I seriously think my Laptop is slower than me when it comes to switching between workspaces and applications.

I just returned from a 1 week vacation and my boss summonned me for a 1 on 1, and said he is not satisfied with my work, as I don't deliver "fast enough" according to him and do not show enough enthusiasm. I just nodded and didn't answer out of shock.
Background: It's my first dev job, and it's in a really fast paced startup. I have no degree, and I'm here for 3 months. I'm 23 years old, he is around 30.
I really don't know how should I feel about this. It's the first time someone tells me stuff like that and I'm kinda depressed. I know I sometimes work slower than my colleagues because I have less experience but I never thought it would come to this.
Any advice?2 -

What did you do the last 20 minutes?
I watched the timer on my browser slowly tick down as it downloads 550mb over a flimsy school wifi connection in the hopes that my constant watching helps it not time out or crash.3 -

Not too long ago during the 90s we only had 33 or 56k modems and the internet worked fine. Nowadays when the data tariff is depleted for the rest of the month and there is only a laughable 64k left speedwise NOTHING in this fucking shit internet loads anymore. I don't wanna watch YouTube. I just want to read the news. Damnit4

This rant can basically be boiled down to the name of the software in use/question:
FileMaker Pro 8.5
Please chime in if you have ever had the privelege of working with this gem of a database program, especially the scripting capabilities...
Trying to make it print/save/export an individual PDF file into a folder specified/created by one field with the filename set from another field. Will probably get it to work but the drag and drop scripting style reminds me of setting up an autoclicker for runescape; so fricken painful. Love to hear your comments.
Also happens to be running on an ancient PPC G5 iMac with 1 Gig of RAM running 10.4.11 hidden in the back room of an old warehouse with extra creepy flickering lights...
EFFF EMMM ELLL
So yeah thats my rainy Friday rant, hope you all are having this much fun.5 -
I started working as back end dev and I was given a pc sadly with no admin rights (which I neede oc) so I happily requested them to IT services. After 3 weeks of waiting got a msg telling me that the script for giving me admin rights was not working so they had to send the request to the next lvl and bla bla bla.
So... I called them. A really nice guy just connected to my pc, used an admin resque account and added my user as admin (2 mins) et voilà. 1 month of waiting for a 2 mins shet. Hate big companies...4 -
When your PC is slow af cause of the hard disk so you make a dumb decision and change your hard disk with a new one and you gotta install Windows on it but you only have very old images of it so it requires a special USB driver to install the system and THEN you realise the setup image has NO DRIVERS for ethernet, wlan OR usb so you can do absolutely NOTHING with your fresh system so you decide to install linux instead but you realise YOU'VE REMOVED ALL X64 IMAGES BECAUSE YOU'RE FUCKING DUMB SO you prepare a bootable Kali USB to copy basic drivers and DriverBooster into the hard disk to install them on Windows.
AND THEN YOUR FRIENDS CALL YOU AND TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE 2 EXAMS TOMORROW BUT YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE THE COMPUTER SO YOU JUST GO FUCKING KILL YOURSELF
This is why I HATE MY LIFE SO MUCH IT GOES SO WRONG !!!!4 -
Fuck you Microsoft for adding so many unnecessary fetures that nobody Needs/wants to use and which also slow down my pc.
I am specifically talking About that sily history-feature which is present for a few months now.
Guess what? I don't need it! Why? BECAUSE I DON'T USE EDGE SO THERE IS NO HISTORY TO LOAD. I DON'T USE (NEITHER I WAN'T TO) YOUR SLOW PHOTOS APP TO SEE IT IN THE WINDOWS HISTORY. I DON'TUSE ANY OF YOOUR SILLY INBUILT UWP APPS.
Since the update which added this feature, my pc is like 2 times slower, because it loads the whole last-5 months history.
Hey, thank you for nothing!1 -

My employer really needs to invest in better machines.
My VM is still running a Windows Update that has taken 50 minutes already.
Fucking 50 minutes in which I couldn't do a fucking thing.
Either the windows update is a huge update but my guess is that I'm on a slow as fuck hard drive that gets virtualized with about 3 other vms

me: ok it's time to recent rants on devrant.1 -
After weeks of constant rush, I finally managed to have one week dedicated entirely to reduce Tech Debt.
It felt so good to close all these todos, finally write those tests, that documentation :)1 -
It's really annoying when you're watching a tutorial video and the person speaks much faster than he can type.
1.5x speed and the guy manages to type a single line of <p> tag and has like spoken 30000 sentences. -
Okay, So lately, I have updated to the new MacOS High Sierra. I was at first worried that it might cause a lot of bugs with most of my applications, but for now, everything is fine, but my browser Firefox.
Suddenly, after the update, firefox started becoming slow. Really quite slow. I looked at the activity monitor, looked at cache, nothing. When I go into fullscreen in HTML5 videos, the lower part does not go fullscreen and leaves a FUCKING SPACE THAT SHOWS MY FUCKING DESKTOP. I can fix the bug my turning auto hiding, but I use my dock a lot, and welp, I do not want to give up things that I use everyday, just because of a simple bug. Mozilla was apperantely notified about this glitch as soon as the BETA of the OS, but welp, they have not fixed anything yet. FML. How the hell am I supposed to browse devrant with a buggy browser?
GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER MOZILLA2 -
That moment when you build your app around a clients development API only to find out their production API responds about 8x slower... I'm sorry, it's not my fault your API server takes 4000 ms for a SIMPLE response. My app isn't the problem. Fix your shit.1
-
Oh god why!?
Somehow I decided that it would be nice to have a proper spell&grammar checker in VS Code for me and my friends to write our reports in Latex with.
Decided I wanted multiple language support, so I turned to language tool.
GOD is this thing slow as a very unmotivated snail!
3s to process 9 phrases!? And then add one second to pack the results in a JSON string!? An option that I'm still very grateful exists, but why the fuck would you disallow line-by-line processing, which you expressly recommend for IDEs, and which cuts processing time by 30%, when JSON output is asked!?
Well, serves me right for thinking for even a second that a Java program could have decent performance...
This whole thing is starting to look like it's not gonna be nearly as fun ss I anticipated it to be.2 -
TL;DR (it is indeed a text wall) => read the tags, it should be enough for you.
Context : my sister works as an "everything"-manager for a small non-profit company dispensing classes in some crafting art. Her boss (let's call him Nic) is also a friend of her, and he's more of a "thousand ideas a second" type of guy than a "more monies for me", so he speaks very friendly, directly, and doesn't always think about the management and costs of his decisions.
His website, on which users can book for classes, is a Wordpress (you already know it's gonna be bad). I already talked to him about getting a custom and fine-tuned website. Having seen my sister use it for administrative tasks, it's a real pain and really not suited for their particular needs. Also, getting a custom website would permit some manual tasks automated (so less work for her). But he won't accept because "SEO is better on Wordpress".
Yesterday, 23:30 (11:30pm) she called me on Messenger, asking if I could dispense some advice to her boss because he struggled migrating the companys website to another server. Looking at the time, I said she could put me though so he could tell me quickly his problem, but I wouldn't do anything until at least tomorrow. Things went a bit like this (on Messenger) :
Nic : Yo. What's up ?
Me : I'm fine, thanks, and you ?
N : Fine, but not the server... It's so slow and I can't seem to get the perfs up. It's pissing me off. I switch from /Offer 1 from hosting provider/ to /Offer 2 from hosting provider (SSD included !)/, I thought it'd be better but the TTFB is still struggling at min 5 seconds. You know what I mean ?
Me : Yes...
N : Anyway, here is the speed test for the original server, and here is the speed test for the VPS one. [me to myself : oh, it's a VPS, ok...]
You see, it's worse on the VPS. Of course, without any plugin everything is perfect, but I just need them.
Me : AFAIK, but I'm no expert on the subject, a VPS will already be slower, because it's virtualized. But I may be wrong here. Anyway, the problem is clearly Wordpress : your plugins are adding a shitload of operations on your server, so SSD or not, if the CPU is overwhelmed, having better I/O won't change anything. They aren't always written by developpers with speed and optmization in mind, so you may be using a rocket-launcher just to kill a fly.
N : I already told you that a custom website means shitty SEO. Having a clean and quick code may be nice, but if nobody uses it, you're screwed. If Wordpress represents 1 out of 3 websites worldwide it's for a reason. Aren't you stubborn ? Anyway, can you work on that or not ?
Me : I didn't say you NEEDED a custom website. I just said that, just as you admitted earlier, the problem is clearly caused by the plugins. You told me about your matter, I tried to find an explication. Unfortunately I'm really not able to do anything about this side of things. It may not be the best explaination, nor the only one, but it's 23:40 now and I'm not experienced on Wordpress and server optmization.
Anyway, Wordpress' SEO may be excellent, but it doesn't mean it's crap on other websites. You "only" have to be cautious with it. [it's not as if you hadn't to be cautious with WP SEO too, anyway...]
But I won't insist, rest assured. Who's the most stubborn out of you and me, by the way ?
I can try to find some info, but won't promise you to do anything. Maybe send me a list of your plugins, so I can try to find some info on them tomorrow when I come home? [I was expecting to find out if one of them was known to slow down the system, so we could potentially narrow down his problem]
... wait for his answer ...
N : There are 62 of them. It'll be simpler if I just send you the passwords so you can look at it by yourself.
Me: [Wait wut] Ok.
... By the way, having people click on your website is good, but having them to stay on it (when you know that most users leave if the page isn't loaded in 2 seconds) is better. You have to find a good balance between speed and SEO. Or have big monies to get a server on steroïds. GAFA has all 3, the rest of the world finds compromises.
N : Here's the solution ! I put a 500 Mbps on my i7 7700 !
... A night passes, I don't answer ...
N : You good at configuring servers ? Especially for CDN ? If I put one in /location A/ and one in /location B/ (for security and SEO)... I have a i7 8350 8Go, it should be enough, and I could later add another in /location C/...
I haven't answered yet. Because I never configured a server, and also because I still can't do anything about his website because a) it's Wordpress and b) he didn't even send me the access codes. I'm just trying to stay calm for the moment.rant optimization is for pussies stubborn seo is for winners let's just bypass the problem wordpress is slow 1000 ideas a second -

installing android studio on a new OS is a Pain, worse if the internet connection is a broke AF :-/1
-
Wait, so pressing a key on a modern system and it showing up on screen is slower than it was back in the 70s and 80s because the ratio of transistors to clock speed is worse?

I'm on the verge of breaking this shit Windows based work laptop (Dell, so called i5, yes it's outdated but still) with idk what.
15 and a half mins since bootup and I've not been able to access Microsoft Outlook.6 -
I feel bad for ranting about this.
So I just came out of a projects where a teammate was really slow. It's not that they weren't trying, like I was sitting across from them and can see them working. But seriously fing donkey balls, SO SLOW and subpar, it wasn't slow and steady to win the race, it was slow and steady to just barely pass.
Like we had two weeks for this project, we've had all of the planning done, now on the last 4 days it was just finishing up the implementation. And everything to come out of this person would take ages, slow everyone else done, and would need to be redone by someone else.
I really do feel bad for hating, cuz this person is doing there best and it's just not good enough. They listen, pay attention, but it's like they can't improve.
It just sucks... Because their ambition and effort is not being paid off and is pulling us down...3 -
I'd like to share this article i found on reddit with you :
http://tonsky.me/blog/...
It's about bloated sowftware and performances on modern hardware, I mostly agree with it. What are your thoughts ?4 -
Ok, so I'm a student and in my free time, I mostly write a bit of python, C++ and a bit Haskell for fun...
I wanted to try out Android development now...
HOLY FUCKETY FUCK, THIS SHIT TAKES TIME!
most of the time, I get an idea, open vscode and start typing (maybe install some modules for like 10 minutes), not with this: Android studio took hours to download with all the needed SDKs and libraries, then I created a new empty(!) Activity, then fucking Gradle needs hours to get it fucking ready... On a fucking XPS 13 9370!
How do you guys cope with that waiting, does it scale that way to bigger projects?
I would call myself rather patient, but if I have an idea, I don't want to set up the most basic environment for 3 hours...
Man that shit is bulky...5 -
Been developing a FAAS backend for a mobile app while going back and forth to work in the train, constantly loosing wifi and failing deployments, it's like waterboarding for geeks4

god building ue4 for Linux takes quite a while and I'm not even up to compiling. the dependencies are 6GiBs large and my internet is only 2MiB/s1

Decided to open htop in another terminal window while running a small python script on my works server.6

So I just installed Elementary OS Loki on my older desktop and for that the wifi is incredibly slow, like 30 seconds to load googles home page. It also randomly stops working, and gives a no network connection. When this system was on windows I would average 50~ mb/s down speed, changing it to Linux I'm lucky to maintain 2mb/s. I've been googling for hours and nothing I try seems to work, any Linux pros here able to give me some suggestions. The network card in the PC is an Aetheros one, I it supports a,b,g,n and Bluetooth, I'm currently using the desktop with a Bluetooth mouse / kbd. (None of the hardware/setup has changed since using windows)2

I just saw this video on slow loris attacks (https://youtu.be/XiFkyR35v2Y).
So my question is: why even bother with creating a botnet for a ddos attack?3 -
Duck! this sloppy whiny winnfsd.
Yay! Let's use state of the art Docker with a VirtualBox VM on Windows10.
Don't get me wrong.
The Docker containers in this VM doing a great job on performance.
But in the very moment a Docker container uses a mounted folder via the windows network filesystem, all hell is breaking loose.
Building a vendor folder using a composer Docker image with 84 Packages takes about 15 seconds when cache has been warmed up.
The same Docker command pointing on a folder mounted to Windows Filesystem with warmed up cache takes about 10 Minutes!@&&@""+&
And what is the duckin' reason for this delay?
Because every transfer of a teeny tiny file has to establish a connection to fat ass Windows OS and has to pass it's glorious "security" layer.
DUCK it!
For real.
I currently working on a shell script which builds the whole vendor folder on a volume on Docker VM.
After completion, the shell script will compress the folder to one file.
This one file will be transferred over this god damned network filesystem.
Finally the script will unpack the compressed vendor folder in it's destination folder.
*sigh*
What year is it?!??3 -
So my laptop is getting pretty slow, but I don't want to use Ubuntu on it on a daily base, especially since my school uses windows for almost anything.
I'm thinking about resetting my PC and purchasing a 64gb usb stick for Ubuntu dual boot only..
Advice/better options?13 -
If I would have gotten my last feature request as a part of the (barley existent) specifications i wouldn't have needed more than one week to do it. At least no one is complaining about me being slow.
-
Does anyone else code really slow? I spent an entire day Friday working on one DAO (and one small help desk ticket). Nothing complicated, and I knew what I was doing the entire time. At the end of the day, I just felt like I could have written it faster, or got more done. And I was really focused on it the entire day.3
-
When you write an efficient piece of code and because the legacy database is too slow to return the data, you have to find a way to delay your processing instead of finding a way to speed up the database web service.1
-
I thought I'd give flutter a test, a simple list app lags on the following:
1. Scrolling the "Lazy Loaded" list
2. Tapping on a list item to change an icon color
I followed their "lesson" in creating that app
Now tell me, why should I invest time on this?6 -
What is your way of diagnosing a desktop/laptop?
An employee at work told me that her daughters laptop is acting strangely and she asked me, since I am into computer and I said sure. I said to her to tell her daughter what I am specifically looking for. I never really done this before.6 -
Something similar needs to be written below, "Windows is updating... this will take a FEW minutes".
Any ideas? 😝 -
Fuckin shit web hosts! I must have wasted three hours over the past three days on support emailing, troubleshooting and waiting for a webpage to load. Is a decent host at a decent cost too much to ask for?

Computers at college have so many GPO that the average computer takes 10 minutes to boot and at least another 3 to get to the desktop with an additional 3 before you can actually do anything. Oh and they have college wide power consumption GPOs meaning that even the newest most powerful computers act like they came from the early 2000s2

Guys, I have a tough question. On my school internet there is a downloader list (something like slow net motherfucker list) and I'm there because my school net is very very slow. Would it be possible to liveboot linux, change mac address and hostname to get out of that list until my new mac address and hostname gets readded there?2

It took me an entire week to install Android Studio pressing retry a hundred times because of how crappy our internet is at work.
How do they expect us to work in these conditions! Some days it works alright, most days it's like pulling teeth.1 -

WINDOWS SUCKS!
Since yesterday I'm cursing my ISP for shitty internet speed and called him few times for the same.
As it turns out windows was updating in the background sucking my whole bandwidth!
It took me a day to download a 1 Gb file1 -
My autocomplete has been rendered useless since the API calls need fucking half a second to complete for some reason.
Fucking great... Did something similar happen to you guys with Laravel?1 -
I can run DSP on 4K raw video, but it’s Slack that’s eating up most of my CPU cores. I understand the practical reasons for Electron desktop apps, but it brings fast workstations to their knees and destroys UX paradigms. Run Slack, Discord and Gitter at the same time if you’re a true glutton for punishment. It’s out of control.1

bitbucket you slow fucking sack of shit, we've confirmed with our remote team members that other people on other networks have it slow as shit too
I really wish we could convince our team to migrate to gitlab or github instead
can't tell if it failed to find the pull request associated with certain commits because it's slow a shit, shit (because it's atlassian bitbucket) or both
there is the small chance that maybe it's just the shit telecom industry in this country too on top of it, but things were acceptable before1 -

Everyone who runs tests on our platform complains about the speed and says that it needs to be optimised ASAP. Then assumes someone else will do it. Then a few weeks later they complain again!

How can Lenovo produce such a shitfest as this ideapad laptop. I lack the swear words to describe in how many ways it sucks. Looks nice from the outside, light. But even after deinstalling all Lenovo crap ware and McAffee, reinstalling Windows it was still so slow that I wished I still had my Win 3.11 on that 66 MHz (+33MHz Turbo Button)! HELP: yesterday I discovered why my Gradle build takes so fucking long every time, but I still don't know how to fix it. for some reason, it sees the node_modules folder as NEVER "up-to-date", and so every single time I run 'gradle war_exploded' it copies the entire node_modules folder into the war, even of nothing has changed. any ideas?2
