FOR every field THAT MATTERS a license or degree is hold in high regards.

When I'm coding, I often come up with some cool algos and when I do, I feel pretty good.
But the next second, I get this feeling that I know there are a million other people in the world who have solved the same problem with the same or better algorithm and I feel like shit. Like all the work I put in is somehow redundant.

Like finding answers on StackOverflow... When you do, you know the person who answered has already done it. You're just repeating it. But again, the fact that I'm looking for answers from other people in the first place is ....

I don't know. I guess I need to change the way I code from now on....

I went on an interview was given an algorithm to solve, solved it in 30 mins and they had allocated 20 mins for it. So I guess I suck. I build shit, I don't do algos that often so I'm obviously rusty.

Only building, breaking and rebuilding over time will teach you this knowledge. So essentially a CS grad, who hasn't committed the same amount of hours as I have, can't possibly match me. But they probably can better explain the real world applications of using linked lists...and won't have to Google what Pascal's triangle is like I had to....

My worst experience was at my job where they told me I have to move to a permanent position from 3 years of contracting without a specific offer.
Why is that bad? In my country it means approximatly 40% lower wage.
I came into the job with PHP knowledge when they were looking for Perl on a project one year behind schedule. I learned the language and finished working demo in 6 weeks.
After that, every project that was ever assigned to me was done within 5-15% of the allocated time. I'm not kidding here. My manager loved be, because I was reliable, fast and I even 'accidentaly' solved other problems, like for instance I developed simple syslog search tool and benchmarked zip algos for reading speed, and the fastest had 70% better compression than the algo used before (gzip into plzip on 1-2gb files). That solved anothet problem - syslog servers did not have enough disk space and they didn't have money to upgrade the server.
The number of projects I touched or developed was over 20.
I also lead and developed our team's most successful tool, that every customer was throwing money to buy, while cutting down costs everywhere.
And after three years of that, my manager says that there are no more money for contractors. And the only possibility is going for employment. Without any specific offer! Just 'we cant do this anymore'.
Which I understand, that can happen in corporation, but ffs after all I've done, I expected warmer attitude. Not like 'you may have to leave, since we do not really care'.
I liked the people there, even though the corporation environment was lacking in many respects, but I wanted to help our local branch with everything I could and they gave up on me like that.
So I started looking elsewhere and I found a startup which offered 6 times the money I had in my previous job and promises to relocate me to USA. Which is the best thing that has happened to me that year and second best in my whole life!

If anyone has been keeping up with my data warehouse from hell stories, we're reaching the climax. Today I reached my breaking point and wrote a strongly worder email about the situation. I detailed 3 separate cases of violated referential integrity (this warehouse has no constraints) and a field pulling from THE WRONG FLIPPING TABLE. Each instance was detailed with the lying ER diagram, highlighted the violating key pairs, the dangers they posed, and how to fix it. Note that this is a financial document; a financial document with nondeterministic behavior because the previous contractors' laziness. I feel like the flipping harbinger of doom with a cardboard sign saying "the end is near" and keep having to self-validate that if I was to change anything about this code, **financial numbers would change**, names would swap, description codes would change, and because they're edge cases in a giant dataset, they'll be hard to find. My email included SQL queries returning values where integrity is violated 15+ times. There's legacy data just shoved in ignoring all constraints. There are misspellings where a new one was made instead of updating, leaving the pk the same.

Now I'd just put sorting and other algos, but the data is processed by a crystal report. It has no debugger. No analysis tools. 11 subreports. The thing takes an hour to run and 77k queries to the oracle backend. It's one of the most disgusting infrastructures I've ever seen. There's no other solution to this but to either move to a general programming language or get the contractor to fix the data warehouse. I feel like I've gotten nowhere trying to debug this for 2 months. Now that I've reached what's probably the root issue, the office beaucracy is resisting the idea of throwing out the fire hazard and keeping the good parts. The upper management wants to just install sprinklers, and I'm losing it.

First year: intro to programming, basic data structures and algos, parallel programming, databases and a project to finish it. Homework should be kept track of via some version control. Should also be some calculus and linear algebra.

Second year:
Introduce more complex subjects such as programming paradigms, compilers and language theory, low level programming + logic design + basic processor design, logic for system verification, statistics and graph theory. Should also be a project with a company.

Year three:
Advanced algos, datastructures and algorithm analysis. Intro to Computer and data security. Optional courses in graphics programming, machine learning, compilers and automata, embedded systems etc. ends with a big project that goes in depth into a CS subject, not a regular software project in java basically.

Honestly? I was always good at maths and creativity. And so, programming was natural to me. I was always good at it with minimum effort. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

... Algorithms were a whole other story tho. I'm still not confident 'bout any algos I program from scratch. But hey, if it works, it works. (that became my motto about algos, kinda)

I got an interview for a software internship in SF! So happy right now! Extremely nervous about the interview, guess I have to study up on some algos :)

So my data structure's exam's result came and i got scored 57.5 out of 80. My classmates who barely know anything about C scored way more than me. I am so embarrassed at myself but i gave the right answers in exam. My score in the exams before was 39/40 and 38.5/40. All my hardwork failed because it was a so called THEORY exam where there was only 2 small questions of writing algos but all others were just like "describe pre-order traversal of a binary tree" or "write the difference between a tree and a graph?define adjacent node, path and complete graph"...

CORS is shit
Stupid useless shit that protects from nothing. It is harmful mechanism that does nothing but randomly blocks browser from accessing resources - nothing more.

Main idea of CORS is that if server does not send proper header to OPTIONS request, browser will block other requests to that server.

What does stupid cocksuckers that invented CORS, think their retarded shit can protect from?
- If server is malicious, it will send any header required to let you access it.
- If client has malicious intents - he will never use your shit browser to make requests, he will use curl or any ther tool available. Also if server security bases on something as unreliable as http headers it sends to the client - its a shit server, and CORS will not save it.

Can anyone give REAL examples when CORS can really protect from anything?

I've always been wondering why do tech companies need everyone to have a strong grasp of algos and data structures?

I've been coding most of my life but didn't get a CS degree so ended up in IT but I kind of want to get into a tech company as my thinking is the quality of code much higher (I spend a lot of time cleaning up other people's code and prod issues over the years...), I've been learning Algo/DS but when I see those technical questions on CareerCup, I go WTF.... it's this the kind of problems you guys do every day?

I'm curious, how many of you ranters out there studied Math at an advanced level to become proficient at programming? Is there a particular field of Mathematics that would improve my programming skill?

Context: I come across a lot of Math I don't understand/never encountered when researching topics such as encryption, hashing, geospatial data handling and randomness. Was wondering if I missed out on some key learning that would make these topics a lot less mysterious. Also, I overheard someone coming up with a mathematical formula to base an algorithm on. I don't think I've ever come up with algos this way.

So today at work, a dev proposed some solution to a performance problem by using divide and conquer. But the way he said it was came across like "this is a brilliant, algorithmic solution, I bet you'd never think of this because no one else knows algos".

So then I just reply to him mentioning Big O and how it seems the performance is N^3, exponential. In which case the optimal size is like 1. But basically like starting an algo discussion to see if he can keep up... Or if he's just dropping some algo slang to look good.

2. DBMS should show core underlying concepts of how queries are executed. Also, what data structures are used in new tech.
3. Teach linkers, compliers and things like JIT. Parsers and how languages have implemented X features.
4. Focus on concept instead of languages. My school has a grad course for R and Java. (I can get that thing from YouTube !!)
5. Focus a little on software engineering design pattern.
6. It's a crime to let a developer graduate if he doesn't know GIT or any version control. Plus, give extra credits for students contributing to open source. Tell them if they submit a PR you get good grades. If that PR gets merged bonus (straight A may be ?)
7. Teach some design pattern and how industry write code. I am taking up a talk at school to explain SOLID design pattern.

Mostly make them build software!
Make them write code!
Make them automate their homeworks!

Make them an educated and employable student.!

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition [2011]

I am a bit embarrassed, because despite it looks like a thorough 1000 pages guide, its last edition dates 2011 year.

From one point of view, it should contain core concepts that still remain the same, from the other, reading 2011 book in 2018 sounds like a not very good decision.

What would you say?

I use to develop desktop programs in C++ with algos related with image processing and computer vision. However, new projects appear and one of them was for web using Drupal. It was my first experience with web and I am still having nightmares... It is the worst thing you can do. Continue a big project without the understanding of technology nor the framework... Now I am more experienced and I prefer stacks like MERN. Easy the debugging in web i so crucial... Maybe, I would have to swtich to webassembly.

Any resources for self-learning algos in Python?

Python maybe to high level so C# would be good to.

Clarification I am looking for resources AI learning itself and not me learning it.

Anyone have experience with technical analysis, algo trading?

Was reading an article about how markets are probably going to crash next year based on some technical indicators and it reminded me of the days back in uni when I tried to create (simple) trading algos using all sorts of technical indicators...

Never got anything better than random... And I recall was basically throw some indicators together and backtest using different parameters. I think it's called p-hacking.

But anyway just wondering how is it actually done such that it works... And well how can technical analysis ever work if it's completely subjective to the parameters u use? Like just take Moving Average. You can take a average over any range 1s, 1min, 1d, 1 month, etc.

So many combinations u could use, how can you make any rules that you are confident enough to put lots of money on...

What is the best string comparison algorithm ?

Example Use case: group messages from your telco into groups of related messages.

I have gone through the various algos and implanted them. I just want your opinion if you have experience on this.

Every single time I get in a lift, I think about how it schedules, however, I don't recall the algos well.

Would you rather:

A) Take a test consisting on Data Structures and Algorithms in C or C++ or heck even Java

B) Turn in as a final exam a screenshot of you completing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

I had an easier time passing Data Structures and algos when I was studying, even with a high grade vs the amount of ass whooping I got myself handed on that game the first playthrough (now it is easier, but still)

I feel compelled to figure out how to use software in a gaming setting to teach skills like CS and Math. But do it in a way that is fun and not feeling like a "math game".

I want to spend more time learning about algorithms, architectures, design approaches, etc. Writing such a game would force me to understand what I present in a very intimate way.

I can see a way to create algos in game using very visual ways. Then allowing someone to make superstructures combining those algos to solve tasks.

I was inspired by how some algos require data to be sorted a certain way before starting. As the algo as a side effect resorts the data to know when it has completed. I realized if an algo is generic enough it can be combined just like functions or objects.

I also want to learn math better, especially in conjunction with code. So making a platform for learning these would be a lot of fun. I would definitely want both visual and textual interfaces to the code. I have to imagine a real programmer being frustrated with a visual interface unless it was really compelling.

I find it interesting that a lot of algos are represented visually when trying to show how it works. I realize some probably cannot be visualized so easy though.

I also want to use software like this to teach someone to think more deliberately and help people be more disciplined in their thinking. I know I could use this.

I have a secret goal of being able to use such software to help someone become a math/programming wizard. I don't know if this is achievable, but having exercises that help solidify root concepts in a fun way would be really useful IMO.

So I was asked by a client to make an app similar to prisma(not exactly that but let's say a caricature app) and I knew I have to research a lot.

Now I have been loyal to PHP for over 5 years so I first tried with GD and imagick but the results were not very good, so I thought let's try opencv. I didn’t wanna make any compromises so I didn't go the bridging way, I worked on native python even though I am a newbie in it. I was fairly impressed with the cartoonizing results but others weren't. Soon I got to know that this would take much more than simple filter combinations or matrix manipulations.
I read about prisma and got to know it uses deep neural networks for the same.
Now, in the five years I have learnt almost all the things a run-of-the-mill "Full stack Web Developer" should know.
I have a fair knowledge of PHP, many of its frameworks, many js frameworks(obviously jquery), I have a very good understanding of CSS and its models, I have worked on some cool algos and found solutions to many problems but I haven't gotten to stage where I can implement neural networks/machine learning in my projects.
It just scares me.

So all this got me to asking myself should I just step down from the post to a position where I can learn more skills. Managing takes a lot more time where I can't learn a lot. Sure I learnt some other important things but not as much tech knowledge as I would have in a more basic position.

I know not many of you must have read this far, but if you did what do you think I should do? Really depressed at the moment.

When learning a new language I look up public repos on github, specifically those who are just collections of algos in different languages, and take a look + try to implement it in a different way. The good ones also have maintainers that actually take a look at your code when you open a PR and give you some hints if they are proficient in that language.

Vivaldi browser is shit.

Simple isntructions on how to make most shitty browser ever:

1. Force users to use "really-fucking-long" password that will not match to any of their existing ones.
2. Invent some useless stupid "encryption password" (why does any normal browser work fine without that shit) and most ridiculous - automatically set it to be the same as the main password.
3. Of course you forget the pass you set because you dont remember what symbol you added 5 times in the end of your normal pass to fit their stupid rules.
4. You have to reset it
5. "Encryption password" does not reset with it, so you still dont remember it
6. Sync is not working!
7. If you think this is shitty enought, you are not right - they went futher. To reset that fucking "encryption password" you have to... ERASE ALL YOUR CLOUD DATA.

I'm new to coding community and but I learnt​ c++ in school. But I don't know how to improve on my skills. And what all should I learn to get an intern.
I tried codechef but I don't get it how to improve algos n data structures or any of it... N so much going like learn python or java ..make apps or build web pages .... It gets too much on my plate ...need suggestions how I pursue my self in improving competitive coding and alas build a career in web and Android with backend and front end to be precise a full stack developer .... I just wanted to share it with my fellow devs,

I'm peacefully retiring from COMPETITIVE CODING. After two years of rigorous effort on CP, I don't think I improved a lot, although I learned some new DS and Algos. My bad that I assumed CP holds more importance than just being a sport.

It feels to me that I kinda wasted my two years, I could've spent it on some development or ML.

Now, I've started to realize that I can't think faster as other coders do. I tried a lot, but it's all dumped now. Maybe I'm not made for CP or maybe I simply suck at it.

Do you know how to validate file size + mime type of the file before saving it to the disk?

Here is an instruction:

1. In one place you provide a it a fileFilter function that will validate the mime type, but this function can not validate file size or send user response.
2. In second place provide it a config limits file, that will validate file size, but can not validate mime type
3. In third place you provide middleware to capture any errors caused by previous 2 places and send response back to the user.
4. Go google for what is cb in multer because their shit documentation says nothing about it

Such simple thing as request->validation->response is split into 3 different parts, each of different type: callback, config file and middleware.

Hey guys, i'v been working in a company for almost 1 year as a web developer. I only know the basic data structures and algorithms even after this year and also my co workers didn't seem to know graph,trees and other algos like dijikstra and all those advanced algo types. I'm searching for a job with better salary should I have to learn all these to get paid well ? Where even I can apply these things in my job? Is it worth ?
