My brother did something so stupid, I'm even doubting my relationship to him.
So yesterday he goes of to a friend of his and takes his MBP with him.
Later that evening he messages me : dude i got trolled big time, but reaaaally big time.
I ask him what's up, and what he replied to me, i still cant comprehend.
He said that he had lag on his mb when playing a game so he went to the internet and he came across a post with a command ... 'sudo rm -rf /' and someone else replying 'thanks bud, solved the problem for me'. So he went ahead and removed his root partition lol . I was like : WHY WOULD YOU EVEN ENTER A COMMAND YOU DONT KNOW WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP.
It made me think of another post here 'sudo like you have no backups'
When you have to fix your mom computer over the phone for 2h because you can't access through teamviewer... That rage you feel while you think "ok, breath, she had to teach you how to use a spoon once..."4
what a irony !
manager using MBP 2017 for browsing and presentation.
graphic designer is working on window xp sp2 dual core.
I’ve finally gotten a desktop for work. So I don’t have to use my own mbp.
I think I’ve got enough screens, for now.
What annoys me is that none of them are same type, size or brightness12
11 months to develop our own game engine and a game using it, tools etc with almost any knowledge about c++, 4 programers and 3 artists. I've been working from 8am to 23pm, 7 days a weeek for 10 months + lots of days without sleep more than 3h because we had milestones. Hardest shit I have done ever. Here's the result, all images are in game https://m.youtube.com/watch/...18
Installing MacOS on Virtualbox running on Windows 10 which is running on MBP Bootcamp partition.
How does the new MacBook pro outsell Microsoft surface and dell XPS 😖 are there so many "sheep" out there who buy a 1300+ machine with 2 (max 4 ports) not including the 17 dongles you'll need?
Sorry if I offended anyone but I just think the new MBP is ridiculous and is definitely not "Pro"17
Apple replaced ESC and Fxx keys with a touch display stripe, that will at first show these buttons but eventually replace them with notifications and etc. As Vim user and step-debuggers addict (Eclipse, Firebug, etc), I just realised that yes, they can be stupid enough to do worse than removing the headphone jack from the iPhone.
The touhbar concept itself is.brilliant, but ffs, couldn't they just ADD it???19
Well thank you Apple for this awesome 10.13.whatever update that got my MBP into a failed installation with no way to boot the os or revert the update without losing shit and a lot of time, arghhhh :/
Also: yay, first rant10
Don't fall asleep doing dev work. Your laptop may migrate while you sleep and drop on your foot the next morning as you pull yourself out of bed. 13" MBP at 3 feet vs my foot.4
I fucking hate this country. I hate this place. I hate these people.
I have to wait for seconds for chrome to even show up, I can't browse shit. VS Code fucks it up like I'm tryna solve some quantum formulas but in reality IT JUST HAVE TO OPEN A FUCKIN PROJECT FOLDER.
I hate the fact that I need to work for months to afford a decent computer, MBP or XPS isn't even a dream for me.
Wanna buy a XPS? Good. Now work for 10 months even without spending a dime. MBP? It just become 20.
Why did I have to be born in this fucking shithole part of the world? I could've just born dead, that would be less painful.17
Artists be like:
New MBP ordered today from work. 14 days and it’ll be here!
8 Core i9 2.4Ghz -> 5Ghz
32GB Ram (2400 MHz)
4GB Vega 20
Excited!! Bring the Apple hate. I’ll wait 👍🏻👍🏻35
How to take off with a jet:
1. Have a 2013 MBP
2. Don't clean the coolers and exhausts for 5 years
3. Transpile an app and start a gradle build
4. Enjoy your machine taking off at around 100°C
FFS Apple, 100°C is not OK. Neither is having the fucking fans so loud I can hear them over my headphones. I should probably clean the laptop... Not sure I can open it up though. Company-issued machine.12
When tv series/movies have "coding scenes" and they do impossible things within seconds. (I'm watching last season of the 100... My god...)12
Just got a new MacBook Pro from my Company.
We are working with Linux on server side.
The work is getting easier and faster with a MBP + HomeBrew
Sitting at Starbucks cause my train is delayed and it's the only place with freaking free wifi.
I found the stereotype hipster :D
A guy having Beats Headphones on with a MBP, iPhone X obviously next to his MBP, searching for Elon Musk Audiobooks and Courses for Smalltalk and Management on Audible 🤣7
So went to Starbuck to get a frappaccino then I realised I forgot to commit my project. I whipped out my mbp to fire that shit off. It was at that moment I realised ouuuh fuuckkk I'm one of those people now 😐 needless to say I bowed my head in shame and left without making eye contact with anyone....8
Now I will defend USB-C untill my face turns blue and my mouth turns into a thunderbolt 3 port but fuck me some people complain about the stupidest shit when it comes to adapters...
Saw someone on twitter complaining because to get an ethernet port on his MBP... Only to notice he had purchased a USB-C to USB-A just so he can plug in a USB-A to ethernet...
Now maybe I'm thinking too logical but if you wanted an ethernet port, surely you would buy a USB-C to ethernet port and not seperate things to do the same job and then complain about it?
I can justify complaining about USB-C to auxiliary to some extent but for fuck sake I swear some people just get off on complaining about self inflicted issues -,-5
It is time... to rant about macs!
No, seriously - I had such a different experience about which not many talk in real life or pretend that it never happens....
Model: 2015 mid MBP 15" with second to highest specs (don't have dedicated gpu).
Rattling fucking toy.... Yea, it rattles! If you shake/move ir sit in trait/bus - it non-stop rattles as a fucking toy. Worst part? It's confirmed issue by apple and it manifacturing issue that they are not keen on fixing!!!! WTF? We have 4 macs in our office - all of them fucking rattles... God help me how annoying that is. (Lose LCD control panel that unsticks from glue. Replacing it solves the issue for 1 month if you carry it anywhere).
Constant fucking crashing/updates.... Every morning I wake up and don't have an app that requires confirmation for restart - it's restarted. YAY, turning on all apps once again.... Why you may ask? Well, because if you tinker with software in any way - it fails to update it and hell breaks lose. It's been a long time since High-Sierra came around and the issue is still there (not running Mojave as it conflicts with soft I have... Woo!). Tried few times - updates fail. Resolution? Reinstall OS!
OS conflicts with applications - damn... People told me it works out of the box.... Yeah, as long as you don't upgrade the OS - then it breaks. Why? Well, because.
Piece of shit power supply. With 4 of our office power supplies - 2 of them failed twice withing warranty and once afterwards... Really? Not to mention that all 4 are starting to shear the sleeve or already did (mine is just wrapped with white electrical tape to give it a support... lol).
Bluetooth - who the hell needs that in mac, right? Well, people do. To start with - it conflicts with 2.4GHz wireless network - you might have one of those and not both at the same time. Next thing is using a device that needs constant connection (mouse, headphones, keyboard - non apple branded) - shit... They can't stay connected for more than an hour without any issues... Constant battle to re-connect it, to re-pair the device and all due to smart apple bluetooth settings. Hell, my mouse (logitech MX master) was even printing random symbols in some applications if moved. All of the issues went away after using a bluetooth dongle... WOO!!!!
Xcode... Ahh, you may never prepare your mac if you don't download 17GB of fucking xCode libraries that enables some tools to be installed/runned as you can NOT get them in any other way and you have to install full xCode software in order to get them... YAY! 17GB wasted on my 256GB SSD that I can't upgrade. GREAT!
OsX applications - ah, don't get offended but if you are using them and you are fine with them - you are probably a monkey that loves being told what to do. You can't customise any actions, you can't configure it the way you like - either you accept their default workflow or go kill yourself. Yep... Had issues with calendar, mail, iMessages, safari... None of them fit my needs :)
Resolution scaling... Fucking hell, the display is 2880 x 1800 but all you let me to use is 1440x900 without scaling? Am I blind to you? Scaling the resolution means that you are fucked if some applications don't support scaling very well. Looking at you Jetbrains - your IDES suck at scaling and slows down the pc to a potato....
Now the pros - keyboard is way better than the new ones, trackpad is GREAT - no need for mouse (using it on external 4k displays only), the battery life is great - getting around 6h of continues development time, 8 if using sublime instead of phpStorm and well, that's about it...
I've bought this device due to the fact that at that time mac and windows pc's with similiar specs costed the same while windows pc sucked with their quality of the device and trackpad... Now the situation is better and when time comes for a next upgrade - it's going to be one of these:
Razer Blade 15, Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Carbon X1 series.
And of course - LINUX. I've had enough issues with windows, and had enough of retardness of apple ecosystem, so switching it is a must for me.
Disclaimer: I might be an unhappy customer, a bit picky but I'd like my device to be setted up as I like and continue to have that until I don't like, not until the company decides to break it. Not to mention that paying almost a yearly salary in my country for one device - I'd expect it to be at least reliable and work without issues....
ps. You can disagree with me, this is my personal experience with MBP over the last 3 years :)10
Pro tip: Don't cheap out on dongles for newer macbook models.. Bought a (somewhat) working Chinese dongle with 4 ports. Fire hazard and I think my 13" mbp just farted a fireball4
When you realize that the bug is happening because you copied your own code and forgot to replace some variable after you pasted it... Damn you brain! Do not copy/paste ok? Or I swear I will drink a lot on Friday....4
After fighting with Kali I was finally able to boot into it and install it on a 2nd hard drive on my 2010 MBP...6
Hello fellow coders can you help me here plz.
I'm really confused whether to buy MACBOOK PRO 13 INCH or SURFACE PRO 4. Both of i5/8gbRam/256ssd specs. Price almost same in India.
My main use is programming ( web apps/ open source) + portability.
Factors I like in macbook pro:
1) unix based
2) best service here in India ( heard from answers on Quora )
3) DURABILITY ( heard from answers on Quora ) ( will last for many years without any glitch).
Factors I like in Surface pro 4:
1) its ultraportability
2) pen & touch
3) better typing experience ( since I code/blog for long hours)
4) native bash support
5) sexier than MBP :P
I really like SP4 over MBP but I'm worried about its durability and service(in India).
What are your thoughts on this guyz?38
The solution to missing esc key is to map it to caps lock, like we were ever using the caps lock......
Now cut the ranting, you have a solution8
Closed MBP and left. Returned to office. Head to a very quiet Starbucks. Open MBP lip. Greeted with a woman's moan. F-ING COWORKERS!
I was given a 42in 4K TV; I already have one. Should I use it as a monitor or sell it? I really need a monitor for my MBP. Would it be toooo huge for a monitor?13
Producer meets designer.
Monday, 10am email "new task added: implement this new feature. Priority: can wait forever"
Tuesday, 4pm email "change on task: implement this new feature. Priority: urgent, it's a must on wednesday's build"2
TLDR; macOS wouldn’t update to the version I needed because I have a 3rd party SSD. All I needed was a firmware update only found deep within a google search and a secondary SO answer.
I have a video edit project this weekend. No big deal.
Except that the Final Cut Pro project was saved in the latest version of FCPX, for which I need latest MacOS version
As a music producer on the side, I had heard the new file system of MacOS High Sierra would possibly break audio plugins. I didn’t bother updating until now. Looked further into plugin problem, it would be simply a broken hard link which I can easily fix. No big deal.
Except that I have upgraded my MBP SSD from 256gb to this 3rd party 480gb SSD. macOS does not recognize this SSD as compatible with update. No big deal. Simple google search for a terminal command would do the trick.
Except that I found and tried several solutions, including wasting an entire hour updating the original ssd and booting from that to try to update it.
Nothing worked, but deep down in the google search, found in a secondary answer on SO, there was a link for a beta release of a firmware update for the SSD that took two minutes to install, and I was finally able to update.
That firmware update needs to be more prominent everywhere. Wasted well over 3-4 hours updating crap, swapping out SSDs, and googling when all I needed was a fucking firmware update.9
I have an old macbook pro (mid 2010) which I dont use anymore. Im thinking of installing linux on it. Just for the heck of it.
Do you have any suggestions? Have anyone done it?
*I dont need it for any day to day activity.12
Just ordered a 15 inch Mac book pro (2017) as my main devlopment machine.
I never could work on Windows machine, so my choices were limited. Hope MBP lives up to the hype. 😅7
Just realised I've been looking for an x86 based laptop to install Linux on just for around the house...
Been looking at buying a brand new one and only now just remembered I have an old 2009 MBP...
Let's break out the elementary OS USB and breathe some life in this baby!1
You think you are fucked until you realize that Matt Daemon is lost in mars with win xp.damn you nasa, you cheap bastards! (photo taken by me during the film) no spoilers please, i haven't finished it yet1
When you finally decide to upgrade to a new Mac Book, and there's not a single unit in stock in Finland and earliest new stock ships early next year. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, I NEED THAT MACHINE RIGHT NOW!
So today my company was removing most workspaces with USB 2 connections, DP cables and magsafe 2 power cables. This means that my MBP mid 2014 can't connect to the keyboard and monitors anymore. It already struggled with 4K, so my 2K options were already limited, but now the last few spots are mostly gone. In short: I'm being forced to upgrade.
But tell you what: I don't want to. It feels like a waste to recycle my laptop (even if it's company paid and owned) while it's perfectly acceptably fine. And mind that I will get the latest and greatest i9 for free. Yes, that overheating, throttling failure of hardware design piece of shit. 2 coworkers already own the beast and confirm that it gets really hot really quickly. One of them even has daily crashes (the laptop just turns off) and random reboots. A total waste of money. And my future time. As if it's not enough work to migrate to a new laptop (even with Time Machine).
So, fellow ranters, what do I do? I hope I can leverage the second best MBP (CPU-wise) from this situation, unless there already is a bunch of i9s in the office ready to be used. I really, really don't want one. And I think my current computer is great for what it is, even if it's old. It's a really pro machine for my needs (I'm very efficient, except for Android Studio).
I even consider asking for a Linux machine, but then a whole new world opens to me that may be a step too big (since I barely have hands-down experience).
Enlighten me with your ideas, muggles!5
To Mac fan boys... Suck it. In the time I've had 1 BSOD on Windows 10 I've had 7 kernel panic on Mac is x at work. And the MBP is newer.6
How the f*ck could Apple release an MBP with such a sucky flawed subpar keyboard? One speck of dust and your $3000 laptop is about as useful as a brick! Idiots!2
For developers MacBook pro is great. I pray to Git god daily for a MacBook pro. Hope Git god bless me with a MBp15
I need recommendations for a Bluetooth keyboard for my MBP 2018 15". Thanks! 🙂
- compact and quiet (no numpad)
- soft to press
- chiclet type with normal travel
- OS X layout
- NOT a mechanical keyboard
- NO USB receiver
Nice to have/Bonus:
- good design for office work
- backlit functionality
- known brand
Goddamned apple. "Just works" my ass.
My girlfriend's 2014 MBP told her an update had already downloaded and she had no choice but to install it, which doesn't bother me. Now, though, it tries to update, then fails, and tells you to run diagnostics. Diagnostics says nothing is wrong, and says to contact support and it boots a minimal version of the OS that only runs a minimal version of safari. You try to access the chat feature and it never fully loads the chat interface. I can probably restore it, but I wanna know what was wrong. It's a really expensive brick right now.3
Are there some good external portable macbook pro monitors that have the vertical/portrait functionality? Also, it should be rechargeable and should not get power from my laptop when there's still a charge. (I use MBP 15" 2018 model)
We are agile at work (all use laptops, no permanent seats) and I need an extra portale monitor because there are no provided external monitors to use.
I was thinking of buying and iPad pro as a portable external monitor via catalina sidecar but it is laggy somehow and very expensive. Thanks! 🙂23
Which keyboard would you recommend to interchange between work computer (MBP) and custom computer (Linux)?2
Received devRant notebook stickers and start struggling... Not willing to spend on my old MBA yet the new MBP rumored to arrive in Q4...
Debug a VBA macro that generates a json file for more than an hour. It always fail, but why? Print json file block by block, debug line by line, all validates. I just discovered that perforce bloqued the output file. Can I go home now please?1
Why is it whenever I'm on a conf call I slide off backspace and mute myself on the stupid MBP TouchBar? Subliminal sabotage 😂1
Long time no rant...
Just fuck apple.
I’m working in partnership with an startup as iOS dev.
We have payments in our app since it was released couple years ago. And everything was ok. Two months ago we implemented a subscription based program that granted our user access to a few things that we need to process manually. I specified that because in apple’s guidelines states that services consumed outside app are not allowed to be sold using inapp purchase and you have to implement your own payment method.
All nice and good we used what we had already in place and the updated was approved. Same for the next 6 versions. Now we discovered a quite critical bug and fixed and submitted a new update just so apple would reject it because we are using subscription that is not implemented using their fucking store kit. So they can’t get those 30% share cut.
Fuck them fuck their echo system fuck their overpriced product. I’v just abandoned my 15” mbp mid2015 in favor of a hackintosh just because my mbp was dying from high temps. Fuck it i’m almost done with mobile development after 6 years2
Although I wouldn't change my main os (os x), I'd like to have a linux VM ready on my machine.
Which distro would you guys recommend?
To give you a quick description of how advanced I am with operating systems, I have used windows for the majority of my life (I'm 19), have recently switched to osx (when the new mbp came out) and have spent about 3-4 months using only ubuntu in between my windows/osx switch. Besides that, I've only done some minor projects with a raspberry pi.4
My new job is giving me a budget for getting a new laptop, looking for some recommendations on good programmer brands, somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800-$2000 USD (not including tax/shipping). I'm looking at the Dell XPS 15, beautiful screen but poor quality reviews. Also, looking at ASUS Zenbook line. Any thoughts on those brands? Any other brands I should look at? I need to run Windows natively, so MBP is out.14
So if I will buy a Dell XPS, should I completely remove windows and install only Ubuntu OR retain windows, do a partition then install Ubuntu in that partition?
Retain windows so I can test web designs in Google Chrome and IE? Hhmm6
😡 So I just updated to OS X High Sierra and I noticed my MBP 2015 gets hot very fast. This was not happening when I was using Sierra before.
Is it just me? Was my MBP fan speed affected by High Sierra?7
I'm slightly annoyed that the 13" MBP does not have a 16:9 display because when I'm recording a game or a programming tutorial I have to crop or leave black bars... but I guess that's what I get for going with the 13" model.
Finally purchased my t480s for university after mooonths of reading reviews and reddit posts. I hoped that the mbp refresh wouldn't be so expensive :( I've got a mid 2009 from work which no one used so they let me take it home and yeah to be honest i like it very much. i wanted learn programming for ios & android, but honestly paying 2,3K€ (student price for the 13" i5 16gb ram 512gb ssd) and having the risk of a (maybe or maybe not) failing keyboard and no chance of upgrading it is too risky for me and my wallet :( I paid 1,5K€ (again student price) for the thinkpad (i7 16gb ram 512gb ssd and the mx150) and i think i'll love it :)
Just wanted to share with you guys :) (i hope i didn't start a pc vs mac fight haha)2
I really was planning on learning iOS Swift app development when the new MBP came out, but now they're saying it may be released in October. Is there anyway I can start iOS development on my PC?5
Has anyone managed to install a Linux Distro over the Boot camp partition on a newer MacBook pro with touch bar? My old 2012 MBP had a tri-boot on it because it had Mint, Win10 and macOS living together in almost harmony. Now I have a 2017 MBP and I can't even get it to live boot from a USB (a type-C one at that! Because of the Nexus 5X I have lots of type-C accessories).3
My MacbookPro won't shutdown fully. Also while on sleep mode, my apps automatically gets closed for auto shutdown (which will be prevented by iTerm's dialogue box for session saving).
I tried clearing SMC & PRAM multiple times now.
Am from southern India and the temperature here varies between 28 - 35. And my usage is heavy - approx. 13+hrs a day. 'Pro' is meant for heavy usage right?
And I dont usually shutdown my MBP I simply closes the lid, is that a problem? Have you guys experienced such an issue? If so, how do you overcome?
Am concerned about it, gimme ur usage patterns / tips to solve this..1
Been using a MBP the last 5 years. I would like to move to pure Linux laptop. Any recommendations on laptop brand?
Back in the day it was always such a PITA getting Linux to run on a laptop due to non existent drivers for sound and wifi. Has any laptop manufacturer filled this gap yet?
I don't want to spend all my time getting the laptop to work, which is why I went with MBP. Reliability is my first requirement, followed closely by performance.6
I plan to change my working machine and decided to go with mbp but I confused which one to choose, whether 13" or 15". Which one the most suitable for dveloping mobile apps?4
Asdfghjkl keys does not work! Not git push, no save! Oh fuck my screen was locked so no on-screen keyboard! Mother fuck! Is this a quick solve for MBP? New keyboard cost £14.99 on eBay.2
Anyone here replaced their MBP (Mid-2012) Non-retina's HDD to Raid0 SSD? How is it holding up? Planning to do this in a month3
Cannot figure out why my MBP slows to turtle speed every time it hits under 20% battery and fans spin up so loud and fast it sounds like a damn drone. I’ve reset the smc and everything!2
You do not know fear until you hit "get latest revision" in perforce without "shelving" anything before
I wished to buy a MBP for myself, but this new version. I am not going to need any of that fancy touchbar and all. But again the previous version is too old. Looking for other options (lenovo preferably)4
Want some other opinions here, I personally use a 2018 13" MBP for my portable device and was thinking about selling it and getting the latest revision of the 13" once they change the keyboard...
I tried the 16" keyboard and holy shit it feels horrible, I honestly like the butterfly mechanism feel, has anyone else gotten so used to the butterfly?3
Hey MBP users! Is there any laptops as performant as a MacBook Pro? I wanna buy a powerful personal machine (Windows or linux) but none of them could match a MBP. Any idea?19
