Me : The website renewal bill is up and it will due in 30 days
Client : Sleep
Me : 14 days
Client : Sleep
Me : 7 days
Client : Sleep
Me : Last notice, it'll be dead tommorow if we dont pay today
Client : Sleep
Me : F
Client the day after suspension : Hey, we can't access the site.
Me : Play dead
I think i should say "email service will die if you don't pay the renewal bill" instead
based on how quick they react when shit stopped working8
My friend silently quited his job. He simply stopped coming to work and that is OK, because his contract expired last Monday. He worked for very bad company, where everyone was braging about how awesome dev they are and know everything better than him. Since company forgot to talk with him about contract renewal or to find a replacement, they are now in big troubles because braggers broke production and none know how to fix it :)6
We're using a ticket system at work that a local company wrote specifically for IT-support companies. It's missing so many (to us) essential features that they flat out ignored the feature requests for. I started dissecting their front-end code to find ways to get the site to do what we want and find a lot of ugly code.
So i dig farther and farthee adding all the features we want into a userscript with a beat little 'custom namespace' i make pretty good progress until i find a site that does asynchronous loading of its subpages all of a sudden. They never do that anywhere else. Injecting code into the overcomolicated jQuery mess that they call code is impossible to me, so i track changes via a mutationObserver (awesome stuff for userscripts, never heard of it before) and get that running too.
The userscript got such a volume of functions in such a short time that my boss even used it to demonstrate to them what we want and asked them why they couldn't do it in a reasonable timeframe.
All in all I'm pretty proud if the script, but i hate that software companies that write such a mess of code in different coding styles all over the place even get a foot into the door.
And that's just the code part: They very veeeery often just break stuff in updates that then require multiple hotfixes throughout the day after we complain about it. These errors even go so far to break functionality completely or just throw 500s in our face. It really gives you the impression that they are not testing that thing at all.
And the worst: They actively encourage their trainees to write as much code as possible to get paid more than their contract says, so of course they just break stuff all the time to write as much as possible.
Where did i get that information you ask? They state it on ther fucking career page!
We also have reverse proxy in front of that page that manages the HTTPS encryption and Let's Encrypt renewal. Guess what: They internally check if the certificate on the machine is valid and the system refuses to work if it isn't. How do you upload a certificate to the system you asked? You don't! You have to mail it to them for them to SSH into the system and install it manually. When will that be possible you ask? SOON™.
At least after a while i got them to just disable the 'feature'.
While we are at 'features' (sorry for the bad structure): They have this genius 'smart redirect' feature that is supposed to throw you right back where you were once you're done editing something. Brilliant idea, how do they do it? Using a callback libk like everyone else? Noooo. A serverside database entry that only gets correctly updated half of the time. So while multitasking in multiple tabs because the performance of that thing almost forces you to makes it a whole lot worse you are not protected from it if you don't. Example: you did work on ticket A and save that. You get redirected to ticket B you worked on this morning even though its fucking 5 o' clock in the evening. So of course you get confused over wherever you selected the right ticket to begin with. So you have to check that almost everytime.
Alright, rant over.
Let's see if i beed to make another one after their big 'all feature requests on hold, UI redesign, everything will be fixed and much better'-update.5
I have a lifetime membership to Lumosity. Not just do they know my time of death, but with auto renewal turned on I have confirmation of reincarnation. At least once, then existence is null.2
Ah certbot you sexy pain in the ass.
# certbot renew
> "Error: unable to parse files ..."
> 2 certificates renewed.
🤔I don't know how you worked, but you keep working!!2
Some motherfucker at the gym called me. “Hey @growling, I am here with that gym you signed up with 5 months ago and your card for membership renewal isn’t working.”
“Yes sir. It’s 8am.”
“Don’t you think it’s a bit too early?”
“Did you get a new card?”
“Hey call me at lunch or something, I’m going back to sleep.”
“Okay, or you can call me. Goodbye”
Acting like you got better shit to do with your time.
Like he wanted to lecture me and say waking me up at 8am is fine. Like he wanted to say he came from a hardworking family and so he can say waking me up at 8am is fine. Shiiit dude my mom used to work with two broken hips for 7 days a week until I made six figures. Bless her heart, that’s why I got her a new car and money each month to pay all her bills. She’s been out of work for 2-3 years now. So lecture me. Only my mom can lecture me, boy. Cause she raised me to be an engineer.
Also, why do I see this everywhere as well? I get lectured for drinking beer on a Sunday or Monday during lunch at my frequent visits to liquor store.
“Don’t you have work?”
Yes, 9-5. But I’m an engineer. So it can be 10-6 or 11-7. Doesn’t matter. All of the stuff I do follows sprints and not direct interaction with customers!
I get tasks done and I teach interns to help me get tasks done. In time. And sometimes even more.
I know my schedule is so lax you want to criticize me. Maybe you think I don’t work? Or work as hard as you?
Tl;dr I intentionally act like a spoiled baby when it comes to work so that service/retail/manual labor people lecture me so I can tell them that we work differently than what they’re used to.
I have free snacks. Don’t get me started about gloating about free beef jerky. People hate me on online forums for doing that! Drink beer on tap in work kitchen. A glass of wine anytime I want. Sleep in until sometimes 11am. But that’s why I’m an engineer, buddy.2
We use MS Teams and I started a new team for the contract renewal. My preference was to continue with the old one for files and searching. I am the “owner” and the PM is the “owner”. Everyone else is a “member”. Owner means admin. The executive sees that she is a mere member and demands the PM add her as an owner. He makes her an owner. Then she decides that she outranks is and should be the only owner. We discover this because we can’t on-board a new person on the team or configure build notifications or GitHub code review notifications.
Basically the executive has stopped the team from using Teams because her ego tells her that she is the one true “owner.”8
In Italy (Milan)🇮🇹, job hunting is a fucking hell for misfits like me:
• 1 year(working) experience + continuous learning/improvement at home
• Skillful and adaptable full-stack
• Willing to do greater things with software without being payed like a monkey
This is the last week working at my current company (from which I rejected the renewal of the contract for 26K€/13 months) and almost every time at a new interview everyone tries to down sell me by default or because of the fucking little time that I've been inside companies without even looking at my skills/capabilities.
Also many little companies made by the CEO and a technical manager that are looking for someone from which being provided food 😒(metaphorically).
(On another side, in one month, me and my gf need to move to a new apartment, the renting process sucks, and she has issues to find a non-slavering job because she is a foreigner(with good knowledge of English and Chinese) with very basic understanding of Italian and I see her crying often in my arms because it's hard and stressful for her to become economically independent as she would like to be)47
At a certain client, was asked to help them with an "intermediary" solution to stopgap a license renewal on their HR recruiting system.
This is something I was very familiar with, so no big. Did some requirements gathering, told them we could knock it out in 6 weeks.
We start the project, no problems, everything is fine until about 2.5 weeks in. At this point, someone demands that we engage with the testing team early. It grates a little as this client had the typical Indian outsourcing mega-corp pointey-clickey shit show "testing" (automation? Did you mean '10 additional testers?') you get at companies who put business people in charge of technology, but I couldn't really argue with it.
So we're progressing along and the project manager decides now is a great time to bugger the fuck off to India for 3 months, so she's totally gone. This is the point it goes off the rails. Without a PM to control the scope, the "lead tester," we'll call her Shrilldesi, proceeds to sit in a room and start trying to control the design of the system. Rather than testing anything in the specification, she just looked at the existing full HRIS recruiting system they were using and starts submitting bugs for missing features. The fuckwit serfs they'd assigned from HR to oversee this process just allowed it to happen totally losing focus on the fact this was an interim solution to hold them over for 6 months and avoid a contract renewal.
I get real passive aggressive at this point and refuse to deliver anything outside the original scope. We negotiate and end up with about 150% scope bloat and a now untenable timeline that we delivered about 2 weeks late, but in the end that absolute whore made my life a living hell for the duration of the project. She then got the recognition at the project release for her "excellent work," no mention of the people who actually did the work.
Tl;Dr people suck and if you value your sanity, you'll avoid companies that say things like, "we're not in the technology business" as an excuse to have shitty, ignorant staff.6
I'm so over the politics....
System team: So, we've rewritten the entire site and the stats are looking pretty great. We're more than a year into the two-month transition period, and hey, that's cool, no judgement. But now we're gonna hit a license expiration on the old site, so we need to shut it down, or otherwise pay a ridiculously big amount to renew the license.
Business: nooooooooo you can't shut down the old site!
Systems: but nobody is using it
Business: yes, they are
Systems: no, they're really not, we checked and everything
Systems: ok, well are you gonna pay for the license renewal?
Business: oh hell no
Systems: ok then we're shutting it down
Systems: ok, it's down
Business: how dare you! We didn't sign off on that! Bring it back immediately!
Systems: are you gonna pay the license?
Business: no! now bring it back!
Certificate: * expired yesterday *
Chrome: 🚨🚨🚨 THIS WEBSITE MIGHT TRY TO ROB YOU AND TAKE YOUR FAMILY HOSTAGE CALL THE ARMY IMMEDIATELY AND WAIT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS 🚨🚨🚨
Ofcourse it's sorta justified, but still, it's funny to see what the consequences are of forgetting to reload the nginx server after a certificate renewal 😂2
You know, people hiring via Skype.
Gaming, seeing family or having long range relationships.
It's become a decent tool.
Then there is the Skype employee.
Opening a court case because in his work time, evaluating Skype calls - ON FUCKING OBSERVING SKYPING PEOPLE - he has to look at too much flesh (as in porn) for his salary level.
Like : the payment category states that you gotta be classed like 1,2 salary categories higher for such work.
So the first instance did not recognise the employees case, because they said its a state thing, or even higher.
Later instance evaluated the employee was right and decreed Microsoft / the NSA (whomever direct employees they are) to properly categorize their employees.
Therefore cost relatively exploded and an algorithm to detect nudity was built.
Wich is operational way earlier than Skypes TOS renewal mid 2018.
That also bans bad language and auto bans given accounts.
Talking about social credit..
in PROC (or prod, as they're known).
And btw: complaining about Google while posting Christmas gatherings on Instagram.. You get what I mean.
Honestly, I don't recall the sources. It's been a while.
I'd really appreciate a little compendium of this for historical reasons.
They will ask: what has brought us here? What is everyone an ultimate right/left/center/agnostic/religious fascist?
And we'll have it on paper. Or papyrus,.. even stone. As I don't know how far mighty people will go for their fortune.15
Just had to renew my driving licence online. After completing the renewal I get the obligatory "how did we do" questionnaire. Last question:
"How likely are you to use the website again?"
Well pretty likely as it is the only fucking way to renew the licence, but at least not for another 10 years 🙄
Did anyone else notice how setting up a letsencrypt.org certificate for a domain became a lot easier as this year went on? Certbot + automatic renewal was set up in four commands on my RasPi, I remember it being more difficult to set everything up 🤔1
Yo @dfox @trogus, I know I’ve been a pain in the ass lately with my connectivity issues etc, 🤪 but on the auto renewal for devRant++, the transaction (to my knowledge) has successfully went through (can provide screen shot) but I haven’t received it. Not rant, just curious if it’s something in my end, I want to continually support this amazing community.6
oh FFS my university pissed me off so bad right now that I had to wait 20 min to cool down to be able to write a rant about it...
so, one of the university department offer an email address which is the official university approved email for student packs like jetbrain's. I wanted to renew my jetbrains subscription, but for that I have to get a verification email on that address..
But since the only time I use it is this annual renewal I dont know the webmail's url..
So I search for it on the department pages, services and its nowhere to be found. Finaly I found it on a student maintained wiki page.
I try to log in.. no luck. try another password, still not it. Try all of the passwords that I remember using in the previous 3 year and no luck.
well fck it the password change is managed by a website where I can log in with a different method, so I change the password and try to log in again.
No fcking luck! And at this point I bashed my head against the wall because I found out that the password change takes them about 1 or 2 hours... hours! wtf...5
Spent the entire morning updating a SQL query.
Client wanted to have different expiration times for different products. So the full package would be 1 year of access and a module would only be 6 months. Then when you renew your account the renewal is 1 year if you have the full package else it's 6 months.
The query takes 0.7s to run and left joins 3 tables. Only to return about 100 results. Still it's faster than the guy who wrote the original query which just dumped the hole db into memory then looped through it appending valid entries to a new array.
When you finish using the bathroom, realize there is no toilet paper, and have to stealthily move to another stall for said toilet paper. Why have we not automated toilet paper renewal.4
When you realize your professor who programs since the 486 era names all variables as such ad "vd_gr" (Validation date grant renewal), doesn't know what encapsulation is and writes his own cryptography algs, which basically replace one letter by another
**then I still I have to tolerate all the critics for why I dropped college5
Applied for passport renewal 1.5 months ago... No update yet
My friend applied for passport renewal yesterday from different state and received a message for printing in evening.
To the companies stealing my money, I need you to stop auto renewing my subscriptions or atleast let me be able to schedule for how long I want to use your services. I cannot come one day prior the auto renew date just to cancel the subscription. It shouldn't be like that.4
Holy fuck I'm tired of domain.com... I bought my domain with them about a year ago, and quickly I discovered how shit they are.
I can almost never access the console, the default view most of the time loads, although even that is incredibly slow. When the console loads, all settings regarding my domain are just loading. Every once in a blue moon I can actually access the settings and do something.
I got tired of it, and started transferring the domain to Cloudflare. That's where I messed up, and didn't know I had to verify the transfer twice, so the domain ended up expiring during the transfer process. Now domain.com has my domain completely locked down, pointing it to one of those 'expired' nameservers.
So three days ago I thought fuck it, I'll pay domain.com to renew the domain, maybe that'll get the domain transferred, or at least get my domain open again, so I can receive emails again, because in all my nerdiness I decided to set up a custom email using 'email@example.com'. So I haven't been able to receive any emails for two weeks now.
Anyway, three days later the status of the domain is still 'pending renewal', and I can't for the life of me figure out how something like this isn't completely automated, and the domain isn't just working again.
So just now I decided to contact their live chat, and even they can't change the nameservers on my domain, and I have to be transferred to a specialist, who will then contact me by mail within 24-48 hours. Fuck I hate domain.com, and I'll certainly never buy from them again5
Used to work salary and in-house for client but now do freelance for them ‘cause ‘rona.
Adobe CC and Font Suitcase licenses are due for renewal and they want to cancel them for all but essential in-house senior staff.
I tell them I have both at home, on my own dime, but I need their font folder to be able to use them.
So I have 12,000 fonts now.2
Not really a dev related rant but a rant nonetheless
Why is auto renewal forced now on subscription services now? I don't want to have to cancel my service by jumping through hoops and explaining why I want to cancel it before finally cancelling it. I've had to help my parents unsubscribe from a few services because it was too confusing for them to do themselves and they've just let them suck from their wallets for half a year.
I am even angrier at long "free trials" that you are REQUIRED to enter payment information for so that they can charge you once it's over if you don't remember to cancel it after a month and a half. Can't we just go back to auto renewal being an option, please?2
got my jetbrains studemt license renewal.
now i just nees to get remote programming on my pi up and running and then i have another excuse for not studying for university.
Fuck GoDaddy. Such a cheap ass company. Charging same price for domain renewal as first time purchase.9
Am I missing something here? Lets Encrypt auto renews SSL every 90 days....BUT it will fail if you have .htaccess re-direct set up to https. So you would have to switch off the https redirect, manually renew, then switch it back on again. Thats fucking crazy. I can’t find a way round this. The hosting co set this up but are encouraging people to buy one of theirs when the renewal fails. a cunning plot to get more of their own SSLs. Any ideas?7
Fuck Apple’s auto renewal garbage. Purchased an app a year ago that I haven’t used in months, auto renewal was enabled by default and I got charged with no warning or notification. So fucking scammy and pathetic. Every subscription service I’ve used in the past would at least warn me ahead of time when my subscription was about to expire and that I would be charged, even when I’ve explicitly enabled auto-renewal. Not Apple though, such a garbage piece of shit company.2
WTF with Linux foundation?! I mean seriously, are their certificates (LFCE -LFCSA) valid for 24 months and do they need renewal?! WHAT THE FUCK?! Does anyone of you know what is this shit or correct me if I'm wrong.2
Currently have a client trying to hold a hosting renewal hostage, by suggesting we need to make posting more user friendly. It's the default WordPress post process.
Can somebody suggest a good domain registrant? google.domain isn’t an option.
Currently using service Domain, but hate their process on domain renewal (I’m not from US).
What’s your go-to service and how’s your experience with it?10
So we're approaching the end of WebStorm license subscription. Got notified about renewal. Then there's this question... Should we
1. not renew, use the fallback version (2018 something) because we don't need that many updates anyway and renew next year to get essentially a 50% off discount, or
2. renew and get the 20% off discount?
Asking for my boss lol4
