So I had my exams recently and I thought I'd post some of the most hacky shit I've done there over here. One thing to keep in mind, I'm a backender so I always have to hack my way around frontend!
- Had a user level authentication library which fucked up for some reason so I literally made an array with all pages and user levels allowed so I pretty much had a hardcoded user level authentication feature/function. Hey, it worked!
- CSS. Gave every page a hight of 110 percent because that made sure that you couldn't see part of the white background under the 'background' picture. Used !important about everywhere but it worked :P.
- Completey forgot (stress, time pressure etc) to make the user ID's auto incremented. 'Fixed' that by randomly generating a user id and really hoping during every registration that that user ID did not exist in the database already. Was dirty as fuck but hey it worked!
- My 'client' insisted on using Windows server.Although I wouldn't even mind using it for once, I'd never worked with it before so that would have been fucked for me. Next to that fact, you could hear swearing from about everyone who had to use Windows server in that room, even the die hard windows users rather had linux servers. So, I just told a lot of stuff about security, stability etc and actually making half of all that shit up and my client was like 'good idea, let's go for linux server then!'. Saved myself there big time.
- CHMOD'd everything 777. It just worked that way and I was in too much time pressure to spend time on that!
- Had to use VMWare instead of VirtulBox which always fucks up for me and this time it did again. Windows 10 enjoyed corrupting the virtual network adapters after every reboot of my host so I had to re-create the whole adapter about 20 times again (and removing it again) in order to get it to work. Even the administrator had no fucking clue why that was happening.
- Used project_1.0.zip etc for version control :P.
Yup, fun times!6
Mother of god.
I spent hours and hours last week to try and get OpenVPN working. I mean, OpenVPN is working perfectly fine (on a VirtualBox (nope no vmware for me on servers) machine on a friends' dedicated server) but it wouldn't get through! As in, every forwarding/firewall rule just didn't work.
Was seriously about to lose my shit just now when I suddenly noticed the term 'TCP' in a forwarding rule.
Looked at the .ovpn file: proto udp
I added the exact same rule for UDP as a forward within VirtualBox.
Well, there goes quite some hours 😐
And solely because I didn't realise that I setup a forwarding thingy for the wrong protocol.
I feel very stupid now :(5
And the title of hackerman goes to he who is now running macOS Sierra inside of VMWare on Windows 😂18
Installing Ubuntu in VMWare. After the installation, proceeded to install VMWare tools to get the full resolution.
Shitloads of errors. Kernel build failing, gcc exiting with error code other than 0, all the copying failed. At the end of the process the executable says:
---The VMWare Team
What the fuck am supposed to enjoy? My broken fucking Ubuntu in a VM?6
I have to share this.
I finally installed Arch Linux on vmware with open-vm-tools.
I love it, maybe it takes a bit of time to install but it's worth it.
If I wouldn't have a mac, I would certainly install Arch Linux.
Pacman is amazing.
And look how beautiful has become (I know that is thanks to gnome and not Arch Linux, but I find it really really beautiful).10
So I saw a lot of people showing off their servers. That's the baby we setup for our uni project. :)8
Past: Used to run Ubuntu in VMWare
Then, I fell in love with it ❤️
Even now I'm using VMWare, but to run Windows (for photoshop) on Ubuntu 😂5
Oh my god VMWare 15 finnaly added an aspect ratio lock for VM's!!!!!!
Only took how fucking long?!5
*gets annoyed by how vi command in Ubuntu WSL points to vim*
To be clear, that's due to update-alternatives in Ubuntu, not WSL specifically.
*le me ducking how to install vi instead, because vim in WSL has scrolling issues*
"install vi ubuntu"
> How do I install and get started with vim/vi? - Ask Ubuntu
> apt - Vim installation in Ubuntu 14.04 - Ask Ubuntu
> Ubuntu Linux: Install vim Text Editor - nixCraft
-.- I'm not looking for vim ffs, I already have that installed.
"install vi ubuntu -vim"
> Same fucking results
"!g install vi ubuntu -vim"
> Installing the VI Perl Toolkit from Source Code—Linux - VMware
> FedoraDirectoryServerClientHowto - Community Help Wiki - Ubuntu …
> Learn How To Use Linux vi Editor And Its Commands - LinOxide
Oh for fuck's sake!!!
So here's my question because apparently search engines clearly can't point me to it, and Ubuntu doesn't seem to have vi as "vi" in their repositories either. Do our Canonical overlords allow people to actually make /usr/bin/vi actually be fucking vi?15
Cracking old recovery CDs for the 9x/2000/XP era shines some light into how companies operated and when concepts came to be in that time:
Packard Bell: An EXE checks that you're running on a Packard Bell machine and reboots if it's not. How do we bypass it? Easy: just fucking delete it. The files to reinstall Windows from scratch come from...
Yup. Turns out Packard Bell was doing the recovery partition thing all the way back to the 9x era, maybe even further. Files aren't even on the restore disc so if your partition table got fucked (pretty common because malware and disk corruption) you were totally fucked and needed to repurchase Windows. (My dad, at the time, only charged at-cost OEM prices for a replacement retail copy. He knew it was dumb so he never sold PB machines.)
Computer check? Nope, remove one line from a BATCH file and it's gone.
Six archives, named "WINA.ZIP" through "WINF.ZIP" (plus one or two extras for OEM software) hold Windows. Problematic? Well... only because they never put the password anywhere so the installer can't install them. (Some interesting on-disc technician-only utils, though!)
If not a Dell machine, lock up. Cause? CONFIG.SYS driver masquerading as OAK (the common CD driver) doing the check, then chainloading the real OAK driver. Simple fix: replace the fake driver with the real one.
Would I mention this one if there weren't?
Disc is mounted on N:. Subdirectories work, but doing anything in them (a DIR, trying to execute something, trying to view shit in EDIT.COM) kicked you back to the disc root.
Installer couldn't find machine manifest in the MAP folder (it wanted your PC's serial before it'd let you install, to make sure you have the correct recovery disc) so it asked for 12-digit alphanumeric serial. The defined serials in the manifest were something like "02884902-01" or similar (8-2, all numbers) and it couldn't read the file so it couldn't show the right format, nor check for the right type.
Bypassing that issue, trying to do the ACTUAL install process caused nothing to happen... as all BATCHes for install think the CD should be on X:.
well that was fun. Now to test on-real-PC behavior, as VBOX and VMWare both don't like the special hardware shit it tries to use. (Why does a textmode GUI need GPU acceleration, COMPAQ?????)5
Fucking brilliant. Paused my Ubuntu VM in VMWare. Unpaused it, the whole file system is corrupted.
There goes my 2 hours of customization. Lesson learned.5
You know the worst thing about being a freelancer? You're expected to wear every fucking hat and you don't get normal hours.
Over the past few days I have been working with a client of a client attampting to fix his server. He's running CentOS on VMWare and somehow ended up breaking the system.
Upon inspection there was no way to fix his system remotely. It wouldn't even boot in recovery mode. So we've been attempting to recover his data so that we can reinstall CentOS and not have to start completely from scratch.
So for the past 3 days straight I have been remotely logging in to a Debian Live CD and manually sending folders to a FTP server of his. He has somewhere close to 30 sites on this server, and upwards of 1 million files in total.
Yesterday either the system freaked out or he did something, but the entire fucking system stopped responding which forced me to reboot it, reinsert the live CD, reinstall evertything, and re-mount his broken systems drives.
Here we are 3 days in, we're still not done, and I'm getting slightly pissy because if you don't know Linux well enough to fix this shit yourself, you shouldn't be acting as your own sysadmin for 30+ sites.
Also, backups are a thing right? VMWare also has snapshots. I know the extra storage isn't cheap, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying soemone like me $35/hr to go and fix all of your shitty mistakes.2
I pulled it off! VMware on Linux is pretty rad! What you see in the pic is windows on my right monitor and Fedora on the left, Fedora serving as the host though.
They work seamlessly! (no lag at ALL)
Full size pic :
FUCK YOU QEMU AND SPICE, STATE OF THE ART MY ASS (GNOME BOXES)30
The wage for the publishing company is too low to my liking (see previous rant), has so many asterisks when it comes to payment that it's downright shady, and I'd rather work for a company that follows European standards and is located in Europe anyway. So I've started to look again for sysadmin jobs.
Came across this fucking site, because apparently Glassdoor is down for maintenance (maybe those guys could use another sysadmin as well, hmm? 🤔)
"5 Linux Systems Administrator jobs in Belgium + 10 miles"
Alright, excellent! Let's see what they are!!!
- Active Directory administrator, wage unspecified.
- Senior VMware administrator, wage unspecified.
- Freelance Windows administrator, wage unspecified.
- Application services PM (i.e. DevOps), freelance, €500/day.
- System applications manager, requirements clearly noting Windows systems but why on Earth would you put that in the title?
Well thank you mate, useless shitsite. Do you see that none of these jobs have anything to do with Linux? Thanks you bastard, totaljobs.com! Time well spent, don't you think? 😑5
Forced to code inside a virtualized Windows 7 (with a cracked version of VMWare) on a PC with a standard HDD, 4GB RAM and Windows 10 as host. Boss: "because if the computer broke, we reinstall the VM image in just a second!". The VM image was 4 years old.5
!rant !!question !!rantNow
Stackoverflow and the internets has failed me, so I thought maybe someone here could throw a pointer 🤞
Has anyone managed to get a hackintosh working in VirtualBox 5 with a decent screen resolution beyond 1024x768?
I’ve tried the usual vboxmanager ways of setting the gopMode and customRes but the damn thing won’t budge.
I’m starting to think VMWare may be the way to go for this thing😪2
So recently I wanted to delete a corrupt jpg file.
I could not because "It's corrupted".
Oh dear windows...
...Go fuck yourself!
Oh and also recently I was out of space, so I had to free some by deleting the VMWare Snapshots that were taking up said space.
...VMWare said it needs more space to be able to delete those files.
Fuck you too VMWare!5
IT student of last year here. I use all this bloody expensive software like R# ultimate, VS Proffesional, VMware, InteliJ even my Windows 10 and free services like Pluralsight, SendGrid, GitHub or DigitalOcean in special student plans(like unlimited private repos on GitHub) without paying a single cent. Scared now what will I do when I will need to buy ide plugin for 200$...9
TBH i didnt start to hate any big company. I use SONY as my phone and im going to stick with it probably. Due to how they handle opensource which is just awesome. Like who releases a guide to build an OS to your device that wasnt even released. AMAZING.
I never loved microsoft since it was always a piece of shit OS.
Maybe one "Company" would be the linux foundation.
Yes yes i know i love Linux from my heart and thats true and will stay that way most for sure but how they handle things is just terrible.
VMware was not following GPL rules and were law suited by Linux foundation. What do they do ? They buy a fucking seat in the board of linux foundation and everything is alright ?
Are you fucking kidding me ?????
This is ridiculous.
Linux will stay the best. Since Kernel has nothing to do with linux foundation but thats just fucked up how they handle things.
People from opensource world were allowed to come to board meetings and request something.
After VMware joined the board they said that they woudlnt be doing that at all.
Like WTFFFFFFFFFF ?
Microsoft joined the linux foundation as fucking platinum member. This is fucking wrong !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically the OS thats anonym to Spying joined the Linux foundation that is against spying ???
Whats fucking wrong with you people ??????????????
This must get better ffs. Somebody should step in and make a good clean in linux foundation so that this never fucking happens again and mainly stop it NOW.
I dont explain it good in here but i recommend you to watch "Linux sucks Forever" Brian explains it pretty good in there.
We must do something about this ffs.4
I once single-handedly developed an entire drag-and-drop ui for creation, provisioning and control of virtual datacenters and all its infrastructure. Other people developed backend and database and the whole project took about 10 months, but about three weeks before we had a working, stable release the company decided to cancel an entire project.
We thoroughly researched the market, and at that time there was no better such solution. We would have made something extraordinary.
Especially because it worked with VMWare.
I hate the Windows vs Linux posts and the Windows sucks posts but god dammit...
With Windows 7 becoming older and older with less and less things supporting it (latest thing is the new Oculus Dash) I yet again decided to try out Windows 10 to see if I should finally upgrade from a reasonably stable system.
So I make a virtual machine out of my physical one and boot it up in VMWare... I upgrade to Windows 10 to check it out it's kind of janky, but I attribute the jankiness to the messiness of running my physical machine in a VM... I continue with the setup process and suddenly, I only see a black screen and a cursor...
I notice VMware is hinting at not being able to connect to the monitor... I realise that, while everything is black and I can't even open Task Manager, I can still see the Ctrl-alt-delete screen so I'm fairly certain at this point it's the VGA driver, still thinking it's probably VMware...
I boot up into safe mode and I try to open up Device manager to uninstall the driver, it won't open (no error or anything, just doesn't open)...
I try opening up devices in the settings and see that the display device is giving an error, try to uninstall it from there, but it freezes the settings app, every time..
I try to uninstall VMware tools as that's where the driver is, click on remove or uninstall whatever the button says and guess what, it freezes the settings app....
I try to open task manager to kill it and task manager is not responding...
fuck it, I'm done...1
"Windows update can't install updates because of the following programs:
Please uninstall or update the program"
Wtf? I had to uninstall it, fortunately I didn't use it anymore.4
The latest Ubuntu 17.10 patch let's VMware run out of the box!
Finnaly time to migrate! :-D7
Actuall live footage of me trying to install and configure VMware to work on arch at the moment...
(I might be a little fucking frustrated)8
My employer uses latest and greatest macbooks. It's fuking awesome. I wasn't a fan until I found the ease of android and iOS development on it. I even started using Atom for web development. And I bought a Mac mini for a dedicated jenkins server. I don't think I'll ever go back to windows. There's just no point. I know it's expensive but it gets the job done. No more fukin mac VMs on VMware. Fuk that shit.22
So we work on a Vmware network. And besides the terrible network lag. The specs of that VM is one core (Possibly one thread of a xeon core) and 3 GB RAM.
What do we do on it?
Develop heavy ass java GUI applications on eclipse. It lags in every fucking task. Can't even use latest versions of browsers because the VM is a fucking snail ass piece of shit!
So, in the team meeting I proposed to my manager, Hey our productivity is down because of this POS VM. Please raise the specs!.
He said mere words won't help. He needs proof.
Oh, you need proof ? Sure. I coded up a script that all of my team ran for a week. That generates a CSV with CPU usage, mem left, time - every 10 min. I use this data to show some motherfucking Graphs because apparently all they understand is graphs and shit.
So there you go. Have your proof! Now give me the specs I need to fucking work!4
Apple for T2 and anti repair stuff (im all for right to repair).
The linux foundation because microsoft vmware and other big companies bought themselves in and they only care about money. The linux world is just starting to become sjw and corporate af.
Microsoft for being microsoft.
Vmware for breaking the gpl and instead of getting fucked in the a they just bought themselves in to the linux foundation.4
Just have just installed VMWare Player for a school project but had to uninstall it because our teacher was unable to put the right version on our share.
Now my Notebooks keybord driver is that broken that a simple reinstall over the device Manager couldn’t fix it!
So apparently vmware has a blacklist of video drivers... if you want to ignore the blacklist you legit have to manually add a line to the .vmx file...
I understand it's not a massive problem everyone will have but at least add a GUI option...
Fuck me, if your going to have something that can potentially render your product useless to some users out of the box, at least give them a simple way, even if it is just under he VM's advanced options -.-1
Smells like a new laptop.
Switched to Windows 10 after using Mac for past 16 years.
Not nearly as painfull as I expected.
MacOS Sierra in VMware to make the switch even easier...10
TLDR: I need advice on reasonable salary expectations for sysadmin work in the rural United States.
I need some community advice. I’m the sysadmin at a small (35 employee) credit card processing company. I began as an intern and have now become their full time sysadmin/networking specialist. Since I was hired in January I have:
-migrated their 2007 Exchange server to Office 365
-Upgraded their ailing Windows server 2003 based architecture to 2012R2
-Licensed their unlicensed VMware ESXi servers (which they had already paid for license keys for!!!) and then upgraded them to 6.5 while preventing downtime on hosted VMs using tricky transfers and deployments (without vMotion!)
-Deployed a vCenter server to manage said ESXi servers easier
-Fixed a three month gap in their backups by implementing Veeam, and verifying its functionality
-Migrated a ‘no downtime’ fileserver to a new hypervisor host, implemented a ‘hot standby’ server as a backup kept up to date by the minute with DFS replication.
-Replaced failing hard drives in a RAID array underlying their one ‘business critical’ fileserver, which had no backups for 3 months at that time
-Reorganized Active Directory and Group Policy deployment from a nightmare spiderweb of OUs and duplicate policies
-Documented the entire old network and now the new one as I’ve been upgrading this
-Audited the developers AWS instances and removed redundant machines, optimized load balancing on front end Nginx servers, joined developer run Fedora workstations to the AD domain and implemented centralized syslog monitoring on them.
-Performed network scans and rewrote firewall exceptions to tighten security
There’s more, but you get the idea. I’ve now been tasked with taking point on an upcoming PCI audit which will be my first.
I’m being paid $16/hr US, with marginal health benefits. This is roughly $32,000 a year, before taxes.
I have two years previous work experience managing a third party Apple repair facility (SimplyMac) and every Apple certification for warranty repair and software troubleshooting. I have a two year degree in general sciences, with about 4 years of college credit (Two years of a physics education and two years of computer science after I switched focus) I’m actively pursuing a CCNA and MCSA server 2016 with exams paid for and scheduled.
I’m going into a salary negotiation in two months. What is a reasonable salary to request, from your perspective, for someone in my position?
Thanks in advance!6
Attended VMware vForum Malaysia 2017... So sad that they have so many stuff happening concurrently, made me wish I could clone myself to go everywhere...1
Me: ugh I really hate the lack of graphics performance in virtual box and not a fan of how CPU hungry VMware can get... Fuck it let's try gnome boxes
Also me: *spends 4 hours diagnosing issues with gnome boxes and Ubuntu 18.04 based distros*
But so far... Worth it. Seems pretty damn good so far2
When you finally have some servers racked and configured in VMware to build a lab environment for the team....
But to access VMware you need to run citrix receiver from a mac to launch Chrome on Windows to access the VMware ESX Web UI but only on the HTML5 version as Flash doesn't work....
Now to spin up virtual machines that you can only upload via ova images but not locally cos that tries to show you the Windows citrix local files....
Do I even dare ask if I can access this via API so I can actually provision this with Ansible like I want too?!
Me: Wants to access an IP camera from home. Goes to url on mac. “Plugin required” press install “Not found”, google it: “ActiveX is deprecated and only works in IE.” Installs windows 7 on a virtual machine: runs IE “page can’t be load, browser not supported” looks for other way: got access: Sooooo slow After all that spent time: forget it I don’t wanna see it anymore.
I was so close to getting my macOS virtual machine fully working on my Razer Blade... But then I discovered that something with OpenGL/GLX doesn’t work properly, so I can’t use any graphics-heavy applications until I somehow figure out what’s wrong 😞6
VMWare be like: "hey lemme just benchmark your primary host disk there... wait a sec..."
*selenium tests continue with 1 keystroke per seconds*
i'm gonna cry in the corner of my room now.2
Why is it that in my IT class, peoplle think it is a great idea to say they know how to use mySQL to create databases and then end up destroying the CentOS VPS they had installed for them... like if you really are that retarded, use Microsoft Access, or better yet, LEARN FUCKING MYSQL BEFORE USING IT3
I have this colleague that who is nice, but if you mention anything about (not complete) java, sun, vmware, windows, daus(dumbest possible user), car manufacturer your ears bleed with is rants about it.
We talked about BMW which published that the energy generated from recuperation of one of their cars is around 60%. Immediatly he rants that it its not possible and the calculated number of an forum user of the newssite who calculated that 90% of the kinetic energy is regenerated has no idea about the problems.
Sometimes its hard to endure the hate, but i can relate with him in some things.2
I'm sick of people who don't care about their job.
I'm attending an app design course and there's this guy, sitting near me, who doesn't care at all about what the teacher explains. Instead he sits and uses the very fast connection of the school to download some useless shit or to manage his shitty web site. Today he missed everything about JSP in order to download ubuntu, install it on his external hdd, install vmware on it and download and install a OSX image for it. And we are paid 1.66 euros per hour (for lunch and gasoline).
Is this the way bad PM are created?1
wtf. Rip VirtualBox. vb sucks 😬😬
Just discovered Vmware Fusion 😍😍😍
what the fuckin fuck of the fuckness this piece of software is just fuckingly amazing7
How to install windows, when there is no network boot support, no USB and you are on Linux?
I did it through vmware, just ran using the current hdd.2
When I thought things couldn't get crazier that my vmware to win chrome mess.....
Doing an upgrade today when I have to VPN in from my mac to access a Web based secret server to get onto another VPN so I can RDP onto a Windows bastion host to then RDP to client windows servers within the RDP and from those hosts need to use putty to ssh into Linux servers to do the admin activities......
Now I'm obviously all for security but seriously VPN to RDP to RDP to ssh is just a bit mental......
But all of the SSL certs between each env is self signed anyhow......2
Who the fuck thought java development is okay on a VDI ! Eclipse runs shit even on local environment and running it on a vm located in a different country with 3gb of vram?
You want to do a file search? Wait for 5mins
You want to. Build via gradle. Wait for 15 min
I've always been a strong critic of the mac operating system and apple in general for they're overpriced products. few months back my old laptop kicked the bucket and repairing it was not an option as i was sick of charging the laptop after every 3-4 hours and had to purchase a new laptop immediately. loooking at my options around 50k rs or 700$ all windows laptops available in indian markets sucked (except for lenovo 320s) so i made the shift to macbook air 2017.my daily work involves photoshop illustrator and a dash of premiere pro. I also work on nodeJS and python using the pycharm and atom IDEs. After using it for a month i feel in love with mac platform and macos. Its a wonderful experience. gone are the days of crashes and the windows updates (ugh). the boot of the laptop is like magic and softwares like wmware imovie and notes keynote are f**king awesome. Long hours of work have become fun rather than hell dealing with constant windows gimmicks and bad battery optimisation on linux.
An explanation why all developers (except for the ones who require high powered gpus) graphic designers should shift to macos rn.
Advantages of using mac
No forced updates update whenever now or a f'ing month later no probs.
better battery optimisation than linux
no more installing os again and again (ubuntu)
better vm than virtualbox (vmware)
terminal for running bash commands
trackpad is worlds better than the best windows trackpad
some softwares not available for macos
storage is generally less on macbooks
UI is simple (less elaborated than windows)
get a vm and install linux(vmware fusion 8)
ps. u may not need it though
wine and wine bottler for using windows apps
get a microsd to sd adapter for macbook and expand storage5
Anyone know of a program that can almost mimic the unity mode of VMware for a Linux host?
Just want to run 1 application on a windows VM and not have the main desktop open but haven't been able to find anything5
Tried to install ArchLinux on VMWare 5 times, and f#cked up
Tried once to install it on real PC - did it...
Realized, that using VMWare is not for me)3
Can anyone recommend a good piece of virtualisation software for mac?
Don't like virtual box and currently looking at getting a copy of parallels seeing as there isn't a vmware workstation for mac...5
VMs - VirtualBox or VMware?
IV'e been using VMware v14 cracked, my principal VM is a Linux mint machine, wich one deals better with Linux VMs?
I haven't used Vbox since I found a craked VMware 14 but should stop using it..........
Also, what is the best way to have a prepared to mount VM in a pen drive? Lets say I place my Linux mint machine in my 64Gb pendrive I take everywhere, I want to plug it to any machine (windows most likely) and use it pronto to run the VM instead working in that machine.10
Trying to build a ros workspace inside VMware...
Called up the teammate who put it together:
Me: hey the workspace isn't building for me, do I need to setup anything before I type "make"?
Him: nah dude just type make and ur good, why what error are you getting?
Me: *describes error*
Him: oh lol I never got that error before, idk maybe your machine is just dumb
Me: *uh ok sure dude* let me try some other stuff
*Boots to native install of Ubuntu*
Me: oh huh that's weird it built on my native installation but not on the VM
Him: oh lol that's not my problem
Seriously dude? First off, screw you Ros for not being able to build in a VM. Secondly, it's entirely your problem! Linux is nice to use, sure, but it's a bit of a problem when the entire team runs off Mac!
I'm currently using both kali Linux and Ubuntu on my vmware running a windows 10 OS also using about 5 different android emulators....... is there any way I might be risking my HDD.....making it crash some day????
An old sysadmin configured the idrac interface of a company VMware server to get the IP address trough DHCP. Of course, without a valid IP, the server doesn't start. For you, where was hosted the VM with the DHCP server?1
I can't get VMware to run on Ubuntu 17.10 for the life of me, thinking I may have to go back to 16.04.3 but just wanted to know if anyone is aware of an "easy" fix first?5
Today at work, I had to do a dry run of our new production environment config for our VM server.
So I setup ESXi in a vm in my workstation. Installed it it, no problem. Setup some VMs, still going good. Then my supervisor came and said I have to make some tweaks and use vCenter. I thought: meh, that came late but ok. Download the vCenter installer from our internal CDN and ran it. Sorry general config, blah blah blah. "Setup with embedded or external platform service controller?" -"Embedded" - "minimal requirements: 11GB ram, 250GB disk storage, 2 CPU cores". Well... Fuck me. My workstation specs: 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 4 cores.
What the bloody fucking hell does this stuff need 250 GB disk space for?!
Well at least I've got a permanent upgrade for my workstation.1
VMWare, for what you people charge, would it kill you to do some basic quality assurance on your install media?
Your flagship product, vCenter Server, has a known issue that's been there for at least eight update releases where you can't actually do the install without catching the newly provisioned appliance VM on its first startup, doing init=/bin/bash, and changing the root password by hand.
Because, yknow, having stuff work according to your docs is for *wimps*. Engineers who have to put up with this shit have the ears of their execs, and you can bet poor quality like this will eventually reach the ears of the people with purchasing authority.3
TIL that even a fucking virtual machine is not a good test environment.
I have glitches/artifacts that I don't have on a real machine.
Can someone care to explain this?
(am using VirtualBox because VMware sucks balls with my current setup)3
Hey, buddy. Update me. It won't take long, I promise. Said my VMware Workstation.
Few minutes later... Goddammit VMware and Windows1
So yeah I just had Ubuntu show me two errors directly after startup, then claiming that there is a programming error in aptdaemon and then IntelliJ crashing because of a read-only FS.
After rebooting my VM im faced with a BusyBox prompt saying my disk is corrupted. Fuck VMWare. This is not the first time the disk in my VM got corrupted.
Thank you so effing much for telling me "Insufficient permissions in the host operating system", VMWare.
Care to be more specific about what permissions are missing? Apparently not...
Since I have some equipment, time, and energy, I want to flesh out stuff in my homelab/homenet. What should I put into a VM to secure my home network, since it runs my website as well? My dad worries about his data being compromised.
VMware 6.5 web GUI programmer fail. Probably forgot to access a specific name property of the object.3
A project on hive....
Well the server has some error....
So i need to install hive on windows....
For that i need hadoop on windows...
For that i need either vmware or cygwin...
What was my project again??
Ok if anyone is interested (Or is having the same issues I had) I have worked out the 2 major issues I've had with elementary OS with Chrome and VMware...
If you were trying to use chrome and go fullscreen but have the browser lock up, try turning on system borders (Pretty sure this forces it to use GTK instead of googles weirdo window)
And if you had an issue with VMware locking up when booting a VM, run it as root...
(Felt like I needed to share this incase anyone else is having the same issues)1
I need an advice.
I just found an old pc, with a foxconn motherboard (http://foxconnchannel.com/ProductDe...) and an intel pentium (https://ark.intel.com/products/...-).
I need to buy a power supply, HDD (there were two with 300 GB in total) and new ram (there were 2GB of ram).
I think that the only thing I can reuse is the case (even though many screws are missing).
Taking into account that I am a student, so the financial resources are not a lot, do I just buy the missing pieces or throw away and change everything?
If I have to change everything, can you recommend an inexpensive setup?
P.S. I'm not a gamer, I'll use the PC just for school stuff (web development, java, virtual machines with VMWare).9
Vagrant, VMware and CentOS.
The perfect storm to drive me mad all day.
If anyone knows how to get the shared folders working in this fucking shitstorm of arse rain let me know I'm slowing drowning in this fucking river of shit.4
I am still astounded by how vCenter is able to vMotion itself between hosts while still remaining in control.
migrating servers to new hardware in vmware...
project manager: I don't want to log in to do 15 minutes worth of work on Sunday during the scheduled maintenance window. can you stay late on Friday? I'll have someone shutdown the servers at 515.
so you want me to waste my time to save your time?.... fine....
I am not sure if VMware gave its blessing to this design for UBEReats ...
or am I the only one who thinks at VMware when seeing those people?
