I was drunk yesterday, watching Mr. Robot.
Woke up with Kali linux booted from a usb and a hacked WiFi password for my annoying vegan neighbor.32 -
I once brought my Kali Linux laptop to school. (Because normal had dead battery, waiting for shipping)
MFW someone from the IT department is called in to fix teachers projector and he sees I still have the default dragon wallpaper on it.
MFW when recognises it it's Kali.
MFW he calls the police and my laptop gets taken away because 'its dangerous' and I get questioned in school.
The police came back a week later to check my laptop again. 'uhh we gotta check the logs'.
IF I WANTED IT TO BE DANGEROUS YOU'D BE FIXING A LOT MORE THAN JUST THE FUCKING PROJECTOR!
Also, wuddup devrant!11 -
Linux is awesome. In runs on my fridge (Tizen), my TV (Tizen), my phone (Android), my watch (Android Wear), My PC (Ubuntu) and my laptop (Kali). I'm now trying to force my parents to convert to Linux.24
-
PSA: kali linux is literally just a debian with extra preinstalled software. You aint hot shit cause you use kali. You aint hacker cause you use kali. You can do the exact same shit on any other distro what doesnt have a 4gig live iso. Shut the fuck up.17
-
Mutual on Tumblr: So what distro do you use?
Me: Zorin OS. I really like it. I'm even considering deleting my windows partition.
Mutual: Really? That doesn't count as a proper distro. Real Linux users only use Zorin on a virtual machine. Use Mint or Kali or something.
Me: It counts. It's not different from any other distro.
Mutual: It's okay to be noob. You can always ask me for advice.
Me: But I've been using Linux for about two years. I don't consider myself a noob.
Mutual: If you're using a shitty distro, then you're a noob.
Me: Okay. Thanks for the advice. (In my mind: fuck off already.)
I don't understand the issue with Zorin OS. Is it because it looks like windows or something? :/26 -
LoL (I wanted to write only LoL for this rant but you need to write atleast 6 characters, ....oh I think now it's sufficient)4

GOD FUCKIN DAMMIT
I WILL FUCKIN KICK YOU ON YOUR FUCKING THROAT.
Programming Languages and Linux groups in facebook are a fuckin pain to watch.
Some people make groups so all can benefit and help each other, talk about mutual interests, BUT NO SOME FUCKERS WILL SPAM SHIT AND MAKE YOU WANNA SMACK THEIR FUCKIN HEAD.
THERE IS A FUCKIN FAQ SECTION THAT ANSWERS ALL THE FUCKIN NEWBIE QUESTIONS. WHY THE FUCKIN HELL YOU SPAM IF YOU HAVE NO FUCKIN CLUE WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE DOING?
You come to a python group and ask if it's possible to get context from a site. I'M NOT MENTIONING THE FUCKIN FACT THAT THIS IS A SIMPLY FUCKIN QUERY TO A SEARCH ENGINE ALSO IT'S MENTIONED IN THE FUCKIN FAQ. Let's move on. We tell you yes, there is BeautifulSoup for that. After 5 fuckin mins YOU COME AND MAKE A NEW POST THAT SHOWS YOU CANT FUCKIN ITERATE A GODDAMN FUCKIN LIST. I'm not pro either, i don't forbid you to learn, BUT FUCKIN LEARN THE BASICS THAT ARE PROVIDED TO YOU FROM GREAT FUCKIN RESOURCES BEFORE TRYING TO ATTEMPT SOMETHING MORE COMPLICATED. AND IF YOU NEED HELP PROVIDE CODE THAT WE CAN USE. NOT A FUCKIN PHOTOGRAPH FROM YOUR MOBILE
Let's go on the Linux groups.
SINCE YOU FUCKIN JOIN A LINUX GROUP YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS LINUX. IT'S A FUCKIN OPERATING SYSTEM RIGHT?
Then you spam shit like, UBUNTU OR MINT 5 MINUTES AFTER SOMEONE ELSE MADE THE SAME VERY QUESTION 30 MINS AGO. WHICH WAS ANSWERED AGAIN YESTERDAY.
"What are the benefits of Linux". NONE YOU TWAT, IF YOU NEED ME TO TELL YOU THE BENEFITS OF THE SYSTEM THAT YOU USE THEN WHY THE HELL YOU BOTHER.
Next.
You say you have problems setting up XAMPP. We tell you that since you are on linux better use LAMP. You ignore us and spam your fuckin problem with XAMPP. IM GONNA FIND YOU AND IM GONNA MAKE YOU CHEW MY FUCKIN SHOES YOU PIECE OF SHIT.
I'm not even mentioning the kali wannabe hackers.
Conclusion:
DO A FUCKIN SMALL RESEARCH BEFORE SPAMMING THE SHIT OUT OF STUPID FUCKIN QUESTIONS. AND IF YOU CANT EVEN SEARCH, LEARN TO ASK IN ENGLISH THAT IS FUCKIN UNDERSTANDABLE SO SOMEONE CAN GUIDE YOU ABOUT WHAT YOU SHOULD SEARCH
OH FUCKIN GAWD IM GONNA THROW MY LAPTOP OUT OF THE WINDOW8 -
Paranoid Developers - It's a long one
Backstory: I was a freelance web developer when I managed to land a place on a cyber security program with who I consider to be the world leaders in the field (details deliberately withheld; who's paranoid now?). Other than the basic security practices of web dev, my experience with Cyber was limited to the OU introduction course, so I was wholly unprepared for the level of, occasionally hysterical, paranoia that my fellow cohort seemed to perpetually live in. The following is a collection of stories from several of these people, because if I only wrote about one they would accuse me of providing too much data allowing an attacker to aggregate and steal their identity. They do use devrant so if you're reading this, know that I love you and that something is wrong with you.
That time when...
He wrote a social media network with end-to-end encryption before it was cool.
He wrote custom 64kb encryption for his academic HDD.
He removed the 3 HDD from his desktop and stored them in a safe, whenever he left the house.
He set up a pfsense virtualbox with a firewall policy to block the port the student monitoring software used (effectively rendering it useless and definitely in breach of the IT policy).
He used only hashes of passwords as passwords (which isn't actually good).
He kept a drill on the desk ready to destroy his HDD at a moments notice.
He started developing a device to drill through his HDD when he pushed a button. May or may not have finished it.
He set up a new email account for each individual online service.
He hosted a website from his own home server so he didn't have to host the files elsewhere (which is just awful for home network security).
He unplugged the home router and began scanning his devices and manually searching through the process list when his music stopped playing on the laptop several times (turns out he had a wobbly spacebar and the shaking washing machine provided enough jittering for a button press).
He brought his own privacy screen to work (remember, this is a security place, with like background checks and all sorts).
He gave his C programming coursework (a simple messaging program) 2048 bit encryption, which was not required.
He wrote a custom encryption for his other C programming coursework as well as writing out the enigma encryption because there was no library, again not required.
He bought a burner phone to visit the capital city.
He bought a burner phone whenever he left his hometown come to think of it.
He bought a smartphone online, wiped it and installed new firmware (it was Chinese; I'm not saying anything about the Chinese, you're the one thinking it).
He bought a smartphone and installed Kali Linux NetHunter so he could test WiFi networks he connected to before using them on his personal device.
(You might be noticing it's all he's. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't).
He ate a sim card.
He brought a balaclava to pentesting training (it was pretty meme).
He printed out his source code as a manual read-only method.
He made a rule on his academic email to block incoming mail from the academic body (to be fair this is a good spam policy).
He withdraws money from a different cashpoint everytime to avoid patterns in his behaviour (the irony).
He reported someone for hacking the centre's network when they built their own website for practice using XAMMP.
I'm going to stop there. I could tell you so many more stories about these guys, some about them being paranoid and some about the stupid antics Cyber Security and Information Assurance students get up to. Well done for making it this far. Hope you enjoyed it.26 -
I have a Kali Linux VM running on my Windows machine. I decide to try and exploit the Windows machine (THAT THE VM WAS RUNNING ON) because of a vulnerability with smb that requires NO user interaction. I decided to make my computer shoot its own legs and I thought "Hey, this is gonna be fine."
Aaaaand the whole system crashed on me.3 -
I feel terrible today. My life doesn't have any purpose! I think it's time....
To install Kali Linux as my main system and start learning Brainfuck8 -
Arch users are literally like vegans, or guys who study the law - they can’t live normally if they don’t tell you that they use it. Just because you can install it, doesn’t make you instantly a Linux god. It’s like Kali users that they think that they’re hackers if they install it, or MacBook users that think that they are “kool kids” because they have a laptop that thousands of other people have.
Nobody. Cares.10 -
Do you have a main Linux distro or do you keep switching?
I wish I can stop switching, but I'm never satisfied after using a distro for about 6 months.
First I tried Mint, then Ubuntu, then Kali, and I'm currently using Zorin.
I still have a long list of distros to use, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a certain distro they use or if they're constantly switching.40 -
Since I moved from pure dev to Code Forensics, and studying with Forensic Computing students (who do one module on security), the amount of Kali Linux wallpapers on a Windows machine is overwhelming.
It's like the entire class watched three episodes of Mr Robot and now thinks they can change the world with a goddamn semester of teaching!4 -
client cto: "SOMEBODY COMPROMISED YOUR KEY!!!! IT SHOWS SOMEBODY LOGGED IN TO DEVOPS GUY'S ACCOUNT USING KALI LINUX!!!!! HERE ARE THE LOGS!!!!"
the logs: *show an ip address*
the ip address: *ip address of the office*
devops guy: *actually uses kali linux*
not really a rant, just found it funny2 -
Imagine if, when a Windows version became outdated (So anything before Windows 8, I guess), Microsoft made it available in the public domain.
We could have Windows distributions, just like Linux! Imagine how weird it would sound if you just said to your Linux-using friend, 'Oh yeah, I use arch!' and they replied 'Oh, me too! I love Arch Linux!', and you just stare at them and say:
'What's Linux? I only use Arch Windows.'
...
...
...
'Arch Windows? Are you stupid?', they would reply in utter disbelief.
We all know someone's gonna blurt out 'Yeah guys! I just downloaded Kali Windows so I could learn to hack, I don't know what you're talking about!'
Ah, good times.3 -
Installing kali linux and say you're a hacker is like buying a pencil and say you're an artist, it's like using beta versions and complaining that it's unstable IT'S DUMB COME ON DON'T INSTALL THE ALPHA VERSION AND EXPECT IT TO WORK 100% PLZ FIX IM A 1337 HAXOR1
-
Look what arrived today. I'm so excited to start tinkering. I might install Kali Linux on another micro SD card6
-
Well, I was Always into Computers and Games and stuff and at some point, I started wondering: "why does Computer Go brrr when I Hit this Button?".
It was WinAPI C++ and I was amazed by the tons of work the programmers must have put into all this.
13 year old me was Like: "I can make a Game, cant be too hard."
It was hard.
Turns out I grabbed a Unity Version and tried Things, followed a tutorial and Made a funny jet Fighter Game (which I sadly lost).
Then an article got me into checking out Linux based systems and pentesting.
*Promptly Burns persistent Kali Live to USB Stick"
"Wow zhis koohl".
Had Lots of fun with Metasploit.
Years pass and I wrap my head around Javascript, Node, HTML and CSS, I tried making a Website, worked Out to some extent.
More years pass, we annoy our teacher so long until he opens up an arduino course at school.
He does.
We built weather stations with an ESP32 and C++ via Arduino Software, literally build 3 quadrocopter drones with remote Control and RGB lighting.
Then, Cherry on the top of everything, we win the drone flying Contest everyone gets some nice stuff.
A couple weeks later my class teacher requests me and two of my friends to come along on one of their annual teacher meetings where there are a bunch of teachers from other schools and where they discuss new technology and stuff.
We are allowed to present 3D printing, some of our past programming and some of the tech we've built.
Teachers were amazed, I had huge amounts of fun answering their questions and explaining stuff to them.
Finally done with Realschulabschluss (Middle-grade-graduation) and High school Starts.
It's great, we finally have actual CS lessons, we lesen Java now.
It's fuckton of fun and I ace all of it.
Probably the best grades I ever had in any class.
Then, in my free time, I started writing some simple programs, firstvI extended our crappy Greenfoot Marsrover Project and gave it procedural Landscape Generation (sort of), added a Power system, reactors, Iron and uranium or, refineries, all kinds of cool stuff.
After teaching myself more Java, I start making some actual projects such as "Ranchu's bag of useful and not so useful stuff", namely my OnyxLib library on my GitHub.
More time passes, more Projects are finished, I get addicted to coding, literally.
My days were literally Eat, Code, sleep, repeat.
After breaking that unhealthy cycle I fixed it with Long Breaks and Others activities in between.
In conclusion I Always wanted to know what goes on beneath the beautiful front end of the computer, found out, and it was the most amazing thing ever.
I always had constant fun while coding (except for when you don't have fun) and really enjoyed it at most times.
I Just really love it.
About a year back now I noticed that I was really quite good at what I was doing and I wanted to continue learning and using my programming.
That's when I knew that shit was made for me.
...fuck that's a long read.5 -
!rant but help?
I currently have Kali (for labs I'm working on to teach myself the things I didn't learn in school), Ubuntu (downloaded for school), and Fedora (downloaded for my database class)... other than Kali already having Metasploit in it, I don't see a difference between these and I know there are more versions of Linux.
What would be a good starting place for every day use, that'll support Citrix receiver (required for work no idea what its requirements are but I can find out, if i can't use it in Linux, I'll dual boot) and virtual box (or other virtual software, don't mind learning new systems), and that i can also have room to grow for security learning?18 -
So, I have this little USB Stick with a Kali Linux Partition on it which I use for school. (I boot up from the USB instead of the installed windows, so I have all my personal data everywhere I go)
But somehow I forgot the USB in class last week... 😭
Today I'll ask the teacher if he found anything. Wish me luck!5 -
This is a followup to my earlier RealTek networking rant.
After reviewing and researching all of the wlan adapter suggestions on that rant, as well as a few more, I settled on an Alfa AWUS036ACH usb3 wireless-ac adapter. Every Alfa I've ever owned has been amazing, so I happily bought it.
It arrived today, and I excitedly threw my existing RealTek garbage across the room, hooked up my fancy new toy, and... nothing.
Fearing it was doa, I ran `lsusb` to see if it was even showing up... and it was! but identifying itself as a RealTek device...?
All of my research showed it uses the Atheros9k chipset. It's advertised and praised as using the "famous Atheros AR9271 chipset" and the Ath9k drivers. Except this particular unit appears to use the RTL8821AU chipset, therefore requiring RealTek drivers. askfja;sldf.
I unhappily fetched the garbage from the dirty laundry where it landed, installed it, and began my research anew.
I found, among all of the wonderful promises of Ath9k bliss, a thread on the Kali forums corroborating the RealTek driver nonsense, and it explained how to get the RTL8821 drivers working with it. which is pretty much the very last thing I want to do.
If you've read any of my networking rants, well, they've all been about how totally awful RealTek linux drivers are, and that's pretty much common knowledge anyway. So I'm like extremely pissed off.
ARGH WHY IS NETWORKING WITH LINUX ALWAYS SO FREAKING DIFFICULT? haslkfjasgdskg6 -
So my story has some little backstory.
I got into computers and technology because of my dad. He was very enthusiastic when I was little and when I grew older and started my apprenticeship as a software developer he was really proud. Note that he never learned anything like that. He just loved computers and games.
Now to the story itself.
I learned more and more, also about networking and came to the conclusion that our slow internet and rare internet problems probably come from stock/weird configurations. But my dads proud probably told him thats a thing he still has to do as the dad. But it annoyed me so much that I booted into kali linux, loaded an exploit to get the web admin passwort and cracked it within a minute. 😎
Finally I was able to configure everything correctly ( channels were spammed from neighbours so I switched to very unused and the disturbions got less ).
TL;DR: Dad didnt want me to configure our router and didnt give me the admin password, so I booted Kali Linux and used an exploit to get it myself 😎😎3 -
So, there was an art student yesterday at my dorm complaining about free speech etc. She told me that they where trying to bring the schools proxy down.
I was pretty impressed because it's an art student!
She then proceeded to tell me she had downloaded kali linux and was learning html...3 -
Oh God.
So I'm working on something and I needed to see how it looks when you type a command into the terminal (like the animation).
Quickly Google "Kali linux terminal," since it's kinda where I'm getting some of the design from.
First video "Kali Linux basic commands (every ethical hacker must know in 2018)"
1st command: whoami
2nd command: date
3rd command: pwd
4th command: cd
5th command: ls
I'd say that's a wee bit basic there and those are commands that literally anyone who touches linux should know, dontcha think there pal?
Nice job using buzz words to try and get views on your "tutorial"4 -
Hi every one!
I have to present kali linux on Monday and the presantation should take from 30 to 45 minutes.
What are the best and coolest topics I may have? ( other than aircrack or fluxion .I am going to show them a live attack on my sim wifi!!)
Thanks alot2 -
I have been using ubuntu for a while now and would like to shift to a core linux OS, what should I choose.
Received suggestions are Arch, Kali7 -
Hey guys, wanna install Linux first time, but had some doubts.
Config - core 2 duo 2.93GHz, 2GB ddr2 ram, 320 hdd, AMD graphics card.
Doubts :
1. After writing it on usb and setting it in usb boot mode, the system didn't read the pen drive data ... is it because of the writing software ... I used power iso.
2. What about the partitions ? Do they still remain and will the install guide only ask to format the c drive or the whole hdd ?
3. Which distro do y recommend... I had kali/debian/fedora/mint in mind
My friends complained about fedora taking 45 seconds to boot up, I don't know about the other distro's ..
Thanks in advance10 -

What flavor of Linux is everyone using? Why do you think it works well for developers? Got a new laptop and I'm trying to decide what to put on it. My other laptop has a dual boot of windows 10 and Kali Linux (my sudden interest to become a developer came from a desire to be better at Infosec/netsec stuff)
Curious to see what everyone uses from a developers perspective. Not sure I want to develop on Kali and windows is shit.23 -
I remember the first time I was experimenting with Linux and decided to install Kali Linux (was still version 1 at the time) and in the process cleaned my hard drive. I was in first year and I hadn't been introduced to git, so you can imagine what happened to my code.
Or when I dumped all my databases into one SQL file (the feature looked tasty in phpmyadmin) and then after reinstalling everything, I couldn't import back the files.
Or last year, where I was on industrial attachment. So we were to delete some data from DHIS2 manually. So as a developer I grouped all organisation units to be deleted under one parent and wrote a python script to recursively delete anything in that group. Just when I was about to show my supervisor how efficiently my script was deleting stuff, he said, "Don't delete anything yet". I hope he doesn't read this *wink*
Fast forward, last week on Friday I dropped my external hard drive. It just works on one USB port now, no idea how and why. -
The convo between my friend and me back then
He: dude I heard you can code can you help me with this coding challenge on codechef
Me: bro, I try to let's check the problem
After 15-30 min we solve the question together
Then after 3 days or so he again meets me
He: do you know about Kali Linux
Me: no man not heard of Linux but what is Kali seems interesting
He: trying to hack WiFi
Me: *getting excited* bro teach me
He: I'm learning too
That day he got to know he can't hack WiFi and I got to know that my friend doesn't know jack shit about Linux, also Linux is awesome
But that moment changed my whole engineering life, I got to learn about Linux and I'm getting good at it every single day since then.
It's been 3 year since I met that fucker.

A guy living next to my house came to me and told me to install Linux on their computer. Being a Linux lover, I was happy to see him switch. I installed Elementary OS Loki, installed nicest theme and conky I had. After tons of other tweaks and customization, I gave it to him, motherfucker told me this is not Linux and what he wanted. He wanted Kali, don't know what the fuck he was going to do with it. This piece of shit wasted my time,3

Because I am very interested in cyber security and plan on doing my masters in it security I always try to stay up to date with the latest news and tools. However sometimes its a good idea to ask similar-minded people on how they approach these things, - and maybe I can learn a couple of things. So maybe people like @linuxxx have some advice :D Let's discuss :D
1) What's your goto OS? I currently use Antergos x64 and a Win10 Dualboot. Most likely you guys will recommend Linux, but if so what ditro, and why? I know that people like Snowden use QubesOS. What makes it much better then other distro? Would you use it for everyday tasks or is it overkill? What about Kali or Parrot-OS?
2) Your go-to privacy/security tools? Personally, I am always conencted to a VPN with openvpn (Killswitch on). In my browser (Firefox) I use UBlock and HttpsEverywhere. Used NoScript for a while but had more trouble then actual use with it (blocked too much). Search engine is DDG. All of my data is stored in VeraCrypt containers, so even if the system is compromised nobody is able to access any private data. Passwords are stored in KeePass. What other tools would you recommend?
3) What websites are you browsing for competent news reports in the it security scene? What websites can you recommend to find academic writeups/white papers about certain topics?
4) Google. Yeah a hate-love relationship, but its hard to completely avoid it. I do actually have a Google-Home device (dont kill me), which I use for calender entries, timers, alarms, reminders, and weather updates as well as IOT stuff such as turning my LED lights on and off. I wouldn"t mind switching to an open source solution which is equally good, however so far I couldnt find anything that would a good option. Suggestions?
5) What actions do you take to secure your phone and prevent things such as being tracked/spyed? Personally so far I havent really done much except for installing AdAway on my rooted device aswell as the same Firefox plugins I use on my desktop PC.
6) Are there ways to create mirror images of my entire linux system? Every now and then stuff breaks, that is tedious to fix and reinstalling the system takes a couple of hours. I remember from Windows that software such as Acronis or Paragon can create a full image of your system that you can backup and restore at any point to get a stable, healthy system back (without the need to install everything by hand).
7) Would you encrypt the boot partition of your system, even tho all data is already stored in encrypted containers?
8) Any other advice you can give :P ?12 -
Do you think a dual core laptop with 2gb RAM on it can run Ubuntu and Kali Linux? The solely purpose is for programming (ubuntu) and ethical hacking / penetration testing (linux) ?
tbh, I’m learning linux because I want to try a new OS. Any tips so that I can easily adapt to this OS?
PS. I know this is a googleable question but I just want a perspective from this community.10 -
Why is it that security (hacking) distros went so popular?
I see more and more posts pictures even on devrant featuring them. Even I see people at my uni that are on kali. I can't believe all of them are that into security. I even know two linux noob friends that wont listen to advice and went to kali as first distro.
I'd never use kali/parrot/whatever vs my current manjaro setup... I'd rather go back to arch.7 -
about to install linux for the first time!
https://youtu.be/8iwBM_YB1sE?t=58
its an hp chromebook with 4gb ram that I can take around. its got an intel celeron n3something and maybe I can get my three essays done while android studio starts.
I'm going to install zorin os, maybe kali.8 -
God I'm changing to Linux , fuck windows ... It would be a perfectly fine os, but in true Microsoft fashion.... They fuck it up.
Been out of the Linux game (cept for Kali) for a while any advice? On a distro
I lost hours having to reinstall , thinking it's doing shit but in fact it's just sitting there cause there's no fucking loading bar or anything other then a spinning circle.
I can't afford to lose 10 hours of work. Which is what I've lost the past two weeks dealing with Microsoft's shit updates.14 -
wtf why did this happen?!
I was updating kali in vm and my antivirus on windows fucked the connection to archive__.org.. cuz of a trojan?10 -
If something is free, doesn't make it the best, it is like saying virtual box is better than VMware because it is free, all I can say is that virtual box is a bitch and VMware is a sexy house wife .....bitches fuck with everyone every with discount....
Good morning peeps6 -
Getting into Linux (Kali...)
Omg I had to google everything. Per example how to change the keyboard to my language...😥5 -
Sooo, here's my (non-professional) setup:
(I'm refering to the desktop, but latelly I've been programming in my laptop)
Laptop OS: Linux (Backbox 5.2)
Desktop OS: Windows 10 + Linux (Kali Linux 2018.3)8 -
!rant && story
tl;dr I lost my path, learned to a lot about linux and found true love.
So because of the recent news about wpa2, I thought about learning to do some things network penetration with kali. My roommate and I took an old 8gb usb and turned it into a bootable usb with persistent storage. Maybe not the best choice, but atleast we know how to do that now.
Anyway, we started with a kali.iso from 2015, because we thought it would be faster than downloading it with a 150kpbs connection. Learned a lot from that mistake while waiting apt-get update/upgrade.
Next day I got access to some faster connection, downloaded a new release build and put the 2015 version out it's misery. Finally some signs of progress. But that was not enough. We wanted more. We (well atleast I) wanted to try i3, because one of my friends showed me to /r/unixporn (btw, pornhub is deprecated now). So after researching what i3 is, what a wm is AND what a dm is, we replaced gdm3 with lightdm and set i3 as standard wm. With the user guide on an other screen we started playing with i3. Apparently heaven is written with two characters only. Now I want to free myself from windows and have linux (Maybe arch) as my main system, but for now we continue to use thus kali usb to learn about how to set uo a nice desktop environment. Wait, why did we choose to install kali? 😂
I feel kinda sorry for that, but I want to experiment on there before until I feel confident. (Please hit me up with tips about i3)
Still gotta use Windows as a subsystem for gaming. 😥3 -
Long days back it was time taking to hack wifi password using coding on Linux kali ,by using few lines of codes etc,,
Nowadays Linux's kali's fern wifi cracker is too easy to use instead of using lines of code.
LOVE TO USE LINUX KALI4 -
There is this try hard dude in my group project team who runs Kali Linux as host (to look cool I think), won't ask anyone for help, yesterday spotted him trying to install a rpm package on his host *facepalm*. Later ran into a guy who kept insisting on me to install windows on my machine just because he thinks it is better, what the fuck is happening here?5
-
When the new head of the Computer Science program at our university comes to our help desk and needs help getting a Kali Linux box to connect to wifi... we have lost all hope (back story this guy is only head because he was the only one to take the job. he is a total tard... it's scary)2

Has hacking become a hobby for script-kiddies?
I have been thinking about this for a while know, I went to a class at Stanford last summer to learn penetration-testing. Keep in mind that the class was supposed to be advanced as we all knew the basics already. When I got there I was aggravated by the course as the whole course was using kali linux and the applications that come with it.
After the course was done and I washed off the gross feeling of using other peoples tools, I went online to try to learn some tricks about pen-testing outside of kali-linux tools. To my chagrin, I found that almost 90% of documentation from senior pen-testers were discussing tools like "aircrack-ng" or "burp-suite".
Now I know that the really good pen-testers use their own code and tools but my question is has hacking become a script kiddie hobby or am I thinking about the tools the wrong way?
It sounds very interesting to learn https and network exploits but it takes the fun out of it if the only documentation tells me to use tools.3 -
So recently I've been taught how to make Virtual Machines in school and I did made an Ubuntu vm because it was loaded on a disk my teacher gave to me. And I loved it, it was my first time with Linux and I was so impressed, so I put some more versions of Linux on a flash drive to copy and I'm going to try them all out! The other versions I'm going to try out are Mint, Fedora, Manjaro, and Kali!3

IT people stereotypes:
young gods = „I know that already for ages. Those senior folks are way too pessimistic and too theoretical.
Give me shell.. wait.. Call me h4ck0r g0d now because I use kali linux.“
("no, you did not learn anything")
senior slow-moes = „could you please retry your last sentence? I just opened my wordpad“

sales-Sebastian = „Sure we can do that. By intention our solution offers only graphQL access because our design goal is minimalism and simplicity“

Nearshore-Naan-Ganjid = „I can program in HTML“

Last night I had a dream that knowing how to use Kali Linux was one of the requirements for a job I was looking at applying for.
So I was thinking to myself "hey, I know Kali, I should put that on my resume," but I was too lazy to do it right away, and when I did try to add it, my resume wouldn't compile (LaTeX) because one of the brackets was missing, but I couldn't find where the missing bracket was.
It was weird...1 -
If I wanted to become a hacker here is what I would do to cover my steps: 1.) Buying a used Laptop with cash, and picking it up in person.
2.) Using random coffee shops to work by dice roll. Obviously at least a d20 and at least 20 coffee shops.
3.) Installing Linux, probably Manjaro. (Not Kali because I've heard that is watched)
What are your thoughts?28 -
Why people tries to run kali Linux in their android?????
Kali is made for computer not for androids then why so many people like to install it in their cheap android 😡😡😡1 -
What's the best Linux distro for someone who had been using windows forever?
I've screwed around with Kali and Ubuntu in VMs but for a dual boot what should I really go with? I want to run android studio, unity and visual studio mostly.14 -
Serious question. And apologize if I sound stupid.
Why do people, especially here on devRant brag about Arch Linux?
What is so special about this OS?
What does this OS do better than Ubuntu, Debian, Kali Linux, Fedora etc?11 -
I've been distro hopping for a while now, and I can't settle on one. I'm stuck using a netbook with Intel Atom and 1GB RAM right now, any suggestions for a sexy, lightweight, and feature rich distro that won't run like shit?
I've already had Xubuntu, Debian, Arch, Kali, Elementary OS, and Puppy Linux.7 -
Mhm my windows just went full retard on me and I was such a mastermind that before I installed win10 I installed a kali linux so that when the windows would fail to boot then and only then would kali boot up to save my arse...then again , apparently , grub dislikes windows over it so...I'm just sitting here...in my kali cave , with kali only booting when my phone is connected via usb (?) searching like mad for a usb stick...I made this whole failsafe thing so long ago I barely remember how I did it...

Creating a partition for Kali or new version of Ubuntu. I know a lot of devs say Ubuntu is the Windows of Linux, but I kind of like it2

fellow ranters, i need your advice!
i'm searching for an ultra portable laptop:
- 11" screen
- full HD resolution
it will run Linux (Kali or other debian based distro) and i need that just to do some work while i'm on the go. I don't need huge performance, so the budget is quite limited (~300 EUR / 350 USD).
is the Thinkpad x220/x230 still the best choice (even if the screen resolution is not full HD)? any other suggestion?
thanks!8 -

Installed Kali Linux alongside Arch Linux. Earlier I was using systemd boot manager. Now that I've installed Kali, grub was installed along with it. Now when I boot arch via grub it's not loading.
Some of the daemons are loading and then it stops there itself.
Please help...13 -

My PC kept booting into linux cause i installed two OS's on my HDD. Long story short, had to remove the Linux (it was Kali) and i didnt know how. And so started the longest few hours of my life.
I deleted the linux partition feeling like some genius that could speak to computers. To my suprise the computer didnt speak back, i restarted it and the GRUB bootloader had this sheepish grin on its face like as if it was saying, "Not sure who's been speaking to you all this time, but i bet you can hear me now, hehehe". I went down the rabbit hole that we all know and love called the google search bar.
My computer could no longer boot into windows, and i started to question my very existence on this earth. Hours of using our modern day saviour, google of alphabet inc, i came to an eventual conclusion. Grabbed a 4GB flash, made it into a bootable device and said good riddance to bad rubbish.5 -
My uncle is interestes in security, but personal security, he wants to be more peivate. So he told me he had installed Kali linux and got a course it, so I tried to explain him that this is more of a professional thing... that he needs something else.. and so he asked me: "What do I need, which book can I buy?"
I didn't really know. For me it's common sense to get a NAS, maybe have a laptop that is never connected to the internet, or maybe encrypt trafic encrypt hard disks.
But is there a book for that? You have 30 seconds to shine, how would u respond?6 -
How am I supposed to start learning pentesting / hacking when kali linux is shot down by the devRant community?
Yes, I would rather start with some source that would get me writing code to do it, I just don't know which is it. Maybe sourceforge?5 -
okay so i was upgrading all of my packages on my Kali Linux (persistence) with apt-get upgrade but it got interrupted by me trying to copy something and me impulsively doing ctrl c. Now, it seems that no apps want to open and i can't open the terminal to do anything. i was gonna ssh but i turned off WiFi afterwards. how do i finish updating apt without a shell and how do i get my apps working?
- sidenote, Firefox seems to work so maybe it's only system or gnome applications like settings and terminal?5 -

I'm wanting to get back into Linux. Can anyone recommend me a good Version of Linux to install on my PC?18

Okay, since I'm handicapped in Linux due to our education system which forced us to learn on windows, I switched over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific and I can't get anything done unless I am root, So suggest me another Linux OS with full root, Exceptions Kali Linux and Arch Linux15

Maybe this is off topic, but currently I have a rant so intense that I just want to post this anywhere I can rant.
I am not sure how to cook But I am interested to become a chef. My dream is to be a chef. That's it. I have seen the cooking in a recent popular action RPG game, Cooking Mama 2. And I will get my hands dirty and syart spending hours to become a chef
Chef is cool. So even I don't know anything about cooking, I got the gut to get into my Mama's kitchen and look around for some ingredients.
Day one, I can instantly make the best food. I am a prodigy.
I made a Kale Salad. It tastes good. I can't resisit sharing my great food to my Mum and my friends
'hey, I am a genius chef !!"
But they laugh at me, 'Lol, you are a recipe kiddie.'
Omg, why are they so rude? they are jealous at me because they don't know how to cook? Lol -

Nessus SSL authentication through Kali Linux is next to impossible. I generated certificates through terminal and I still get error "SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissable length" (in Iceweasel).
Tried importing certs into separate Firefox browser and now just SSL handshake errors.7 -
So hypothetically I have a friend who wants to get a job in cyber security but has no formal education or means to afford one, at the moment. He knows enough about computers to navigate and execute most common tasks, and certainly has the drive, common sense, and brains to succeed but can't afford to in this almost cutthroat field...
How would he begin to teach himself?
He has a laptop, Kali Linux, The BTFM and RTFM books, The Hacker's Playbook 3; and the internet.
Make his day with your two cents.1 -
what linux distro should i try next?
requirements:
- cool
- good design
- comes with typical software and wine
- apt not yum
i was thinking elementary, zorin or kali21 -

So, my previous rant was one of the most liked rant for me so far, in which I simply stated I am moving to Ubuntu.
I feel ashamed to say that I am moving back to Windows(for now at least).
The reason is not Ubuntu, I actually found it lovely. Its my friggin laptop. While there are many other problems, but the biggest is that the wifi adapter's range has fallen drastically in linux. On Windows it was working fine, I also checked Kali and tails(live) and both show the same issue. My router was literally 3 meters away and this shitty laptop couldn't connect. Since, it connects on Windows properly, its obviously a driver problem, the shitty creators haven't released an API for linux devs. Now, I have tried a lot of suggestions from SO but if I can't find a solution I will either have to arrange another laptop or simply go back to that always updating OS. There is another problem, the graphics card is not even being recognized. No idea how shitty hardare this laptop has.
Btw its an HP ac110tx.
Tell you what, I recently bought it from Paytm and thought its an i7 5gen processor with a graphics card for a reasonable price, what can go wrong. This is the issue. Hardware was shitty. I hate this laptop. If I had the money I wouldn't think twice before dumping this laptop on ebay/quickr. But, we are struggling devs(at least I am), don't have a big amount coming soon.
Very depressed and angry!13 -
Don't know it I should spend 15 + hrs trying to crack my neighbors WPA2 setup or if I should just move on to another target. P.S. Nothing unethical that I do4

my old 2011 MacBook with all my childhood memories (i had it when i was 8, im 14 now) just died, can't access the hard drive and it has like 80 bad sectors, running Kali off a USB stick to see if i can salvage any data but i have to install apfs-linux to read apple's file system. currently stuck on installing clang for like 15 minutes2
