First off, a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I are very happy with the year devRant has had, and thinking back, there are a lot of 2017 highlights to recap. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff!):
- We introduced the devRant supporter program (devRant++)! (https://devrant.com/rants/638594/...). Thank you so much to everyone who has embraced devRant++! This program has helped us significantly and it's made it possible for us to mantain our current infrustructure and not have to cut down on servers/sacrifice app performance and stability.
- We added avatar pets (https://devrant.com/rants/455860/...)
- We finally got the domain devrant.com thanks to @wiardvanrij (https://devrant.com/rants/938509/...)
- The first international devRant meetup (Dutch) with organized by @linuxxx and was a huge success (https://devrant.com/rants/937319/... + https://devrant.com/rants/935713/...)
- We reached 50,000 downloads on Android (https://devrant.com/rants/728421/...)
- We introduced notif tabs (https://devrant.com/rants/1037456/...), which make it easy to filter your in-app notifications by type
- @AlexDeLarge became the first devRant user to hit 50,000++ (https://devrant.com/rants/885432/...), and @linuxxx became the first to hit 75,000++
- We made an April Fools joke that got a lot of people mad at us and hopefully got some laughs too (https://devrant.com/rants/506740/...)
- We launched devDucks!! (https://devducks.com)
- We got rid of the drawer menu in our mobile apps and switched to a tab layout
- We added the ability to subscribe to any user's rants (https://devrant.com/rants/538170/...)
- Introduced the post type selector (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...) (which will be used for filtering - more details below)
- Started a bug/feature tracker GitHub repo (https://github.com/devRant/devRant)
- We did our first ever live stream (https://youtube.com/watch/...)
- Added an awesome all-black theme (devRant++) (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...)
- We created an "active discussions" screen within the app so you can easily find rants with booming discussions!
- Thanks to the suggestion of many community members, we added "scroll to bottom" functionality to rants with long comment threads to make those rants more usable
- We improved our app stability and set our personal record for uptime, and we also cut request times in half with some database cluster upgrades
- Awesome new community projects: https://devrant.com/projects (more will be added to the list soon, sorry for the delay!)
- A new landing page for web (https://devrant.com), that was the first phase of our web overhaul coming soon (see below)
Even after all of this stuff, Tim and I both know there is a ton of work to do going forward and we want to continue to make devRant as good as it can be. We rely on your feedback to make that happen and we encourage everyone to keep submitting and discussing ideas in the bug/feature tracker (https://github.com/devRant/devRant).
We only have a little bit of the roadmap right now, but here's some things 2018 will bring:
- A brand new devRant web app: we've heard the feedback loud and clear. This is our top priority right now, and we're happy to say the completely redesigned/overhauled devRant web experience is almost done and will be released in early 2018. We think everyone will really like it.
- Functionality to filter rants by type: this feature was always planned since we introduced notif types, and it will soon be implemented. The notif type filter will allow you to select the types of rants you want to see for any of the sorting methods.
- App stability and usability: we want to dedicate a little time to making sure we don't forget to fix some long-standing bugs with our iOS/Android apps. This includes UI issues, push notification problems on Android, any many other small but annoying problems. We know the stability and usability of devRant is very important to the community, so it's important for us to give it the attention it deserves.
- Improved profiles/avatars: we can't reveal a ton here yet, but we've got some pretty cool ideas that we think everyone will enjoy.
- Private messaging: we think a PM system can add a lot to the app and make it much more intuitive to reach out to people privately. However, Tim and I believe in only launching carefully developed features, so rest assured that a lot of thought will be going into the system to maximize privacy, provide settings that make it easy to turn off, and provide security features that make it very difficult for abuse to take place. We're also open to any ideas here, so just let us know what you might be thinking.
There will be many more additions, but those are just a few we have in mind right now.
We've had a great year, and we really can't thank every member of the devRant community enough. We've always gotten amazingly positive feedback from the community, and we really do appreciate it. One of the most awesome things is when some compliments the kindness of the devRant community itself, which we hear a lot. It really is such a welcoming community and we love seeing devs of all kind and geographic locations welcomed with open arms.
2018 will be an important year for devRant as we continue to grow and we will need to continue the momentum. We think the ideas we have right now and the ones that will come from community feedback going forward will allow us to make this a big year and continue to improve the devRant community.
Thanks everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2018,
- David and Tim49
Hey everyone! As many of you have already seen, @trogus and I are happy to announce the release of devRant++, also know as the devRant supporter program!
devRant++ is a monthly subscription ($1.99 USD) that gives you some cool extra features while also contributing to covering some of our ever-increasing server costs.
- a badge that shows up on all of their rants and comments
- ability to edit rants and comments for up to 30 minutes (instead of the usual 5)
- ability to post unlimited collabs for free (so keep an eye out for new collabs, hopefully!)
- a reserved spot on the devRant++ supporter list (you can only move up higher or stay in the same position through the life of your subscription)
- more benefits coming soon!
Why did devRant++ come to be? Basically, we have the most awesome community members and we kept getting extremely generous requests from members asking how they could help devRant stay afloat. Instead of taking donations and not giving anything directly in return, we wanted to give supporters a little extra something to hopefully make the program kind of special.
We greatly appreciate everyone who has joined the supporter program so far. We also realize not everyone has the money to spend or wants to spend, and that's perfectly fine. We also greatly appreciate everyone here who posts great rants and comments, helps spread the word about devRant, votes on stuff, or is just a valuable member of the community in general. @trogus and I value all contributions and we want to make that clear!
Another reason we decided to go ahead with the program is, as I mentioned towards the beginning, our server/technology costs are increasing and we're kind of at a point where we can't afford all of the upgrades we'd like to make. At the same time while we need more hardware, we're trying to get the app to a place where we're not losing money every month, hopefully to the point where we can break even soon.
Anyway, thank you to everyone again for the amazing support and early interest in devRant++. We would love to hear feedback and stuff you would like to see added to supporter benefits, so just let us know!64
Latest update for the devRant app has some new twists: 1) collabs are now free for all 2) black theme is available for devRant++ members 3) when posting a rant we now ask for you to classify the rant as a specific type of post. RIP !rant :/ To be clear, this isn't meant to say that any posted content needs to be different than what everyone is doing already, just that the extra categorization helps all parties who like or dislike different types of content. This categorization will help better inform the algo and allow for advanced filtering which is coming soon.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please ask me or @dfox in this thread.65
EDIT: since this announcement, collabs have been made free to post for all devRant members!
Introducing two big new devRant features!
First, the one @trogus and I are most excited about - Collabs!
Collabs are an easy way to start projects or work on existing projects with the awesome members of the devRant community. You can post a collab listing for the awesome open source project you started that could use some more contributors, that fun idea you have for a brand new project, or really anything you want to gather some fellow devs for. We think it will be a lot of fun.
Collabs also is a devRant first - it's our first paid feature. For each 2 week collab posting, we're charging $14.99. But we wanted to make sure to thank devRant users who have been with us for a while and anyone who contributes often, so anyone with 2,000 points or higher (now or in the future) gets one free collab listing!
The main reason we see collabs as a great first paid feature is because requiring payment or 2,000 points serves to be a slight barrier in posting a collab. We think for collaborations to be successful it's important to have some way to keep out listings where the poster has no intent of following through and we hope this is a good start to doing that.
NOTE: if the collab you are looking to create is devRant-centric (ex. a devRant Chrome extension), we will give you a free credit especially for that so you don't have to pay or use your earned free one. Just contact us (email@example.com) if your project falls into that category.
In addition, after tons of demand from the community, you can now change your username and email address! One important note is that you only get to change your username one time every 6 months, so use it cautiously :) You can access this feature in the "more" tab, then settings, then "Edit username or email."
If you have any questions or feedback about any of this, just let us know! We hope everyone enjoys :)52
Wan't your own personal devBanner?
Now you can have one!
We're building a powerful banner generator over here: https://devrant.com/collabs/...
The first version is up and running, still basic tho.
You can generate your own by calling this URL:
You'll have to replace "Kimmax" with your devrant name and the value after subtext with the extra text.
A cool domain is already on it's way!
We'll be working on a frontend and a ton of extra features to make this banner even more awesome.
If you got any nice ideas add them to the issue tracker here: https://github.com/cozyplanes/...
🔥 🔥 Release day! 🔥 🔥
devRantron has reached v1.0.0 today! Here is what you can do with devRantron:
1. @mention someone when posting comments
2. Filters rants with keywords
3. Add emoji when posting rants and comments
4. Get notifications
5. Browse rants, collabs and stories
6. Browser user profiles
7. Post rants
8. Create custom columns of your own choice
Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially @Dacexi for designing the app and @sirwindfield for setting up our build infrastructure.
We plan to add more features in future. For example, searching rants, edit/delete rants or comments and most importantly, themes. Right now it has a dark theme by default.
Thank you to the users to opened issues on GitHub during development. Your feedback has helped a lot.
Whenever you find a bug or want a new feature, please open a new issue on GitHub and we will look into it.
Contributors are always welcome. I am still working on writing a article about the structure of the application, I will let you guys know when that is done. It will be easier for you to contribute when you have a bigger picture.

// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta)
After several concepts, about 11 months of development (keep in mind that I released 20 updates for v1 in the meantime, so it wasn't a continous 11 months long development process) and a short closed beta phase, v2 is now available for everyone (as public beta)! :)
I tried to improve the app in every aspect, from finally responsive and good looking UI on Desktop version to backend performance improvements, which means that I almost coded it from scratch.
There are also of course a few new features (like "go to bottom" in rants), and more to come.
It's a very huge update, and unfortunately to move forward, improve the UI (add Fluent Design) and make it at the same level of new UWP apps, I was forced to drop the supported for these old Windows 10 builds:
- Threshold 1 (10240)
- Threshold 2 (10586)
Too many incompatiblity issues with the new UI, and for 1 person with a lot of other commitments outside this project (made for free, just for passion), it's impossible to work at 3 parallel versions of the same app.
I already done something like that during these 11 months (every single of the 20 updates for v1 needed to be implemented a second time for v2).
During the closed beta tests, thanks to the awesome testers who helped me way too much than I ever wished, I found out that there are already incompatiblity issues with Anniversary Update, which means that I will support two versions:
1) One for Creators Update and newer builds.
2) One for Anniversary Update (same features, but missing Fluent Design since it doesn't work on that OS version, and almost completly rewritten XAML styles).
For this reason v2 public beta is out now for Creators Update (and newer) as regular update, and will be out in a near future (can't say when) also for the Anniversary Update.
The users with older OS versions (problem which on PC could be solved in 1-2 days, just download updates) can download only the v1.5.9 (which probably won't be supported with new updates anymore, except for particular critcal bug fixes).
So if you have Windows 10 on PC and want to use v2 today, just be sure you have Creators Update or Fall Creators Update.
If you have Windows 10 PC with Anniversary Update, update it, or if you don't want to do that, wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have an older version on PC, update it, or enjoy v1.5.9.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, update it (if it's possible for your device), or just wait a few weeks/months for the update with support for your build.
If you have Windows 10 Mobile, and because of Microsoft stupid policy, you can't update to Anniversary Update, enjoy v1.5.9, or try the "unofficial" method (registry hack) to update to a newer build.
I hope it's enough clear why not everyone can receive the update today, or at all. :P
Now I would like to thank a few people who made this possible.
As always, @dfox who is always available for help me with API implementations.
@thmnmlist, who helped me a lot during this period with really great UI suggestions (just check out his twitter, it's a really good person, friend, designer and artist: https://twitter.com/thmnmlist).
And of course everyone of the closed beta testers, that reported bugs and precious suggestions (some of them already implemented, others will arrive soon).
The order is random:
Changelog of v2.0.0-beta:
- New UI with Fluent Design and huge improvements for Desktop;
- Added native support for Fall Creators Update (Build 16299);
- Changed minimum supported version to Creators Update (Build 15063), support for Anniversary Update (Build 14393) will arrive soon;
- Added mouse support for Pull-To-Refresh;
- Added ability to change your username and email;
- Added ability to filter (by 'Day', 'Week', 'Month' and 'All') the top Rants;
- Added ability to open rant links in-app;
- Added ability to zoom GIFs (just tap on them in the Rant View);
- Added 'go to bottom' button in the Rant View (if more than 3 comments);
- Added new theme ('Total Black');
- ...complete changelog in-app and on my website (can't post it here because of the 5000 characters limit)...
What will arrive in future updates:
- 'Active Discussions' screen so you can easily find rants that have recent comments/discussions;
- Support for 'Collabs';
- Push Notifications (it was postponed and announced too many times...);
- More themes and themes options;
- and more...
If you still didn't download devRant unofficial UWP, do it now: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
If you find some bugs or you have feature suggestion, post it on the Issue Tracker on GitHub (thanks in advance for your help!): https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
I hope you will enjoy it! ;)54
Hello. I joined devRant today. I am from Japan and my English is not very good. I like the idea of devRant and decided to be part of it.
I like the Stories and Collabs areas. Can't wait to get started.
Please give me tips on how to best use this platform. Is there anyone from Tokyo here?50
Unfortunately earlier tonight some code was deployed with functionality only compatible with the new version of the devRant app that will be coming out early this week. It caused some weird issues where normal rants would be rendered as collabs causing them to not show up correctly.
This happened when going to rants from the feed (fixed earlier) and going to rants from push notifications (fixed a little while ago).
If you notice any of that behavior still occurring please let me know, thanks!
Apologies for the weirdness and missed notif activity for those who were impacted.7
Update on devRantron: We just finished implementing the comment section! Big thanks to @Dacexi and @SirWindfield
Relevent Collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/18
We just finished implementing a lot of features including notifications and emoji picker in "Post Rant" page! Big props to @Dacexi

So I've been thinking, since there are a lot of people on here who want to learn stuff, have a lot of leftover time and so on, and I do NOT have this right now (I only have time to work at the privacy website thingy as for now), what about I post some of the stuff I'd love to make but don't have the time for on here either as rants or collabs? The only requirements I'd have are:
- Being able to participate in them as soon as I get time
- Getting credit.
- The projects being released open source under a license which makes sure that they'll stay open source.
What do you guys think?13
Due to popular demand (and we being unable to produce a smooth performance out of JavaFX), we decided to switch to Electron for devRantFX collab. It is now called devRantron!
Relevant collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/
Under the hood we are using the following techs:
- React (ReactJS, Redux, React-Router)
- ES6 and Webpack
If you have knowledge about React-native or VueJS, you should be able to understand the code (eventually). If you want to contribute let me know! I will add you to our slack group :)12
Update on the devRantFX:
We have made some initial sketch and have been working on it. If you have a better idea, please feel free to let us know :)
Relevant collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/7
Almost there! We're working on the last few bits of devRantron!
Relevant Collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/19
Thank you to everyone that is helping out with devCredits!
I honestly didn't expect people to bother contributing.. but apperently I was wrong.
For the people already working on it, check the readme file for a Todo list if you want something to do.
And for the people that want to help or just saw that this is a thing right now, check out my recent collab for info.

What if we had an extension to the collabs section where app devs could share betas of their apps and other ranters could test them and give feedback.
Sort of like a closed beta for the whole community.5
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta7)
After "Active Discussions" (implemented in v2.0.0-beta5), it was time to implement the last missing app section, "Collabs".
This is the biggest update since the start of the public beta, over 100 changes (new features, improvements, fixes).
- Support for Collabs
- Notifs Tabs
- & more... read the entire changelog here: https://jakubsteplowski.com/en/...
Microsoft Store: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
I'm really happy to announce that the unofficial UWP client has now 100% of the features available on the official Android and iOS apps (if we don't count Push Notifs 😝 but they will arrive soon too).
It took several months of hard work, but I made it... it's here, it reached the level I wanted to reach since the beginning of this project (May 2016) (if we don't count Push Notifs).
I did it a lot of times, but I think they deserve it everytime, I would like to thank all the people who made this possible, all the active users, who opened issues, suggested features, or just used my app and had fun, posted positives (and negatives, motherfuckers, just kidding, maybe) reviews on Microsoft Store etc.
The entire community who made me want to do this project.
You're amazing guys!
Of course this is not the end of this project, I want to bring the app out of the beta and support it until I will be able to do it, releasing updates almost simultaneously with @dfox and @trogus.
Planned to be done:
- Support for Anniversary Update
- Push Notifs
- Custom Themes
- Close the 15+ issues (features requests, fixes) on the issue tracker on GitHub
- Ranti by @Alice: Your devRant Assistant <- I really hope it will become a thing :)
- Your future suggestions -> post them here: https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
Thanks for the attention,
Fuck it. I have cats - id rather replace ads with something I want to read.
Here's a simple catblock clone that replaces ads with rants.
Hi. I am devDNS.
To learn more about me, take a look at my creator's post: https://devrant.io/collabs/216350238
We came up with the idea of showing a small preview card for users in devRantron. It shows a preview of the user and if you click open, it will show you the full profile.

Loving rantBlock 🙂
I just re-enabled it to show a friend... I really do some of my best work at 2am 😂
This collab is still (to the best of my knowledge) the most popular collab on devRant. I ranted a while back that it's open to anyone who wants to get involved to work on production version to publish to mozilla, google etc. Personally I would love to build the rant replacement functionality into a fork of uBlock but I simply don't have the time at the moment - so if your looking for a side project...
Collab LInk: https://devrant.com/collabs/...3
The other day a non-programmer colleague asked me:
"How do you know what to type in, like, did you write all of that?"
As I responded, he asked me another question; "but how do you know wuat to type".
I use to have those same thoughts years ago.
It occurred to me that through constant bugs, errors, bad (team) projects and failures that its become second nature, like breathing.
So, as an experienced developer to people just learning the craft and juniors. Don't give up on your collabs, don't be disheartened by group projects, don't be discouraged by your peers who seemingly try to make your life harder.
Take it as an experience to better yourself and teach them something.
These are the experiences that will make you a better developer.1
AGAIN !!! MICROSOFT (MAY GOD SEND THEM TO HELL) GAVE A DEADLY BLOW TO SOMETHING I USED TO LOVE !!
This new UI update is just aweful, i mean, i love github, i work using github, i do so many things with it, or should i say that i used to ....
This update seems so un-natural, it just doesn't fit.
Why would the collabs be shown so obviously ??
Why would the main window be so narrow while the rest is widescreen ????
My eyes get tired so quickly when i use it now.
It used to be something nice, easy to use, but now it is more like a social media than a professional coding tool.
I HATE YOU MISCROSOT WHAT EVER YOU TOUCH TURNS TO BE A SHIT HOLE30
Hey guys! We have started working on the cross platform desktop app for devRant for a while.
Here's the Collab link: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/
Here's the GitHub link: https://github.com/tahnik/devRantFX
Here's more information about what we are using for developing the project:
1. Java 8
3. IntelliJ IDEA
6. Travis CI
7. JavaRant API (created by LucaScorpion)
Right now we have 4 collaborators: allanx2000, sirwindfield, LucaScorpion and me.
If you are interested in the project, you can always let me know and I will do something about it.5
This is a continuation of a Collab, please check it out before answering this:
I am thinking about making a crowdfunding campaign - should I? I am a terrible person when it comes to recruiting people and getting people to actually become interested in such thing. I hate using my voice also in order to create some promotional video also.
I know that some of you are interested in such thing, but how many of you would actually contribute to such project with your time, coding skill or money?
I am looking into to buy some SuperMicro stuff (would probably cost me around $4000) in order to get started but I am very unsure.5
devRant keeps getting better and better! Collabs are great and the new avatar pets rock! Thanks devRant team.
What do you guys think of my new pets?2
Calling all bored js devs...
So I just noticed that rantBlock is the most ++'ed collab on devRant! This was totally unexpected since it was just another proof of concept of a random idea I had while bored.
The problem is I do not have time in the next few months to develop it further. I would love to see it ported to uBlock and officially released on the chrome/mozilla/microsoft stores so I am posting an open invitation for devRanters to take it over.
Realistically though while the collab is popular on devRant the repo was not cloned enough times to even show - it only had one watcher and 7 stars so I am not sure if it will get much usage once released, but I promise to download it.
Even with that in mind it's a pretty fun side project if your into ad blocking (ad how it works) and browser extensions for the holidays and you have a community of devs to get feedback from.
Leave a comment if you would like to see it properly published or would like to contribute and you guys can network from there.
To access the collabs from website, you can go to this URL: https://www.devrant.io/collabs
I feel like a hacker now :P6
Fuck I wish I knew what to do about low motivation!!! I have some ideas I think are really great, some that might be profitable, and fuck I just don’t do any of them. I spend more time panicking about what to do than anything else. But damn so much time wasted when I just needed a little guidance or a little planning or a little like less than $100 more money. That frustrates me to no end.
There’s so much bullshit to everything. This does follow up to my wk106 rant, where I’m trying to rationalize the tons of code that are behind the smallest features. How many thousands of builds go into a deploy. Just swallowing how much rite in software.
I feel like a failure at my job at times but what sucks is I’m just in the middle. Not the most experienced dev, not the least. I’ve got my feet wet in a number of things, but not a solid enough stack for a lot.
BUT SOMEHOW I GOTTA BE MOTIVATED TO LEARN. FFS I CAN DO BETTER BUT MY INSIDE IS BROKEN SOMETIMES AND I JUST WANK OFF FUCK GET IT TOGETHER.
Yea, I fight with myself a lot. I have a big ego and I’m a piece of shit at the same time. Idk. That is annoying too. If only I could get really motivated and focused on some of these projects I could do amazing things. I’ve never struggled with a subject I applied myself to. I just wasn’t motivated. I don’t know how to fix it and I wish I did. I also don’t know what the end game for me holds.
This whole complex really scares me for later life. I will have regrets because my mind builds impossible plans for good, but if I achieve any of it I WILL THINK damn I should have not dealt with this and done x. Like I could make world peace but be like damn coulda rebuilt cars or some stupid shit.
So I’ll conclude with that I’ve done a lot of jobs around the house, and yes working with drywall sucks. So sometimes I’ll think about that. But damn. That doesn’t last because I know I can do it well if I apply myself.
All this leads to getting overextended which is another huge motivation killer. I’m trying to learn self control and focus. But also I need small victories along the way. Very annoying.
Well at least I was motivated to finish this rant. I have a few weekly rants I wanted to participate in but couldn’t even find the motivation for that. There was a toxic person in my life then and I’m slowly getting back to normal but I know that even normal me struggles with motivation. Plus that toxic person was my friend and I’ve lost a lot of (long term) friends recently and that is a real drag. But they needed to go. But I wish they had just shut up sometimes then they wouldn’t have been so toxic. But I digress.
I know I have so many ideas I can’t do them all even if I am motivated and for some time is of the essence.
So look out for some collabs. And grab that motivation wherever you can find it.1
Woah! Collabs! Nice.
I'm actually glad it's a paid feature. The sheer entitlement of people using free software asking for development help for free has always bothered me.
Cool idea, I hope it works out!
I'm working in an open source panel with php and Phalcon FrameWork
And I want to share with you if you are interested to collabs & help me in
Github Repository: yassinrais/sakura-panel21
So apparently you can't make collabs from the web app.. The '+' is for a new rant. This sucks because I had things I wanted to paste in.8
@dfox I saw a few posts lately, about websites that people did. So besides the collabs, I'd like to suggest a new section. "DevReviews" or what ever. The basical idea is, every one, that is signed up gets one "token" devRant ++ suporters maybee an additional free token every months or whatever.
If you wan't your website reviewed, you can post it there and people reviewing it will get such a token for their review.
To ensure a certain quality of the reviews, I'd put a minimum caracter length and a "dispute" function, where the review is taken to a community voting, if the person giving the review should get the token, or if the review should be dismissed. Additional "tokens" for additional/more reviews can be bought through the app, that could help a lot of devs get quality reviews and testing and earn you some $ for the servers.5
Obligatory repost of @Skayo 's and @frogstair 's revamped API docs.
Thanks to our lords and saviours.
y'all surely like up-to-date docs and shit, and there's an unofficial project that has been revived to document devRant's API. Check the collab:
That's it I'm done with wordpress.
Join me angry devs, let's change the world!
Why do I do this to myself..
I opened the devRant app again in since like.. forever..
My lights starting to dim and turn off at 00:30 to remind me to go to bed.. Well.. apparently.. I've been sitting here on my couch, in the dark, scrolling through rants, stories, collabs, .. for the last 2,5 hours.. It's now 03:00.. I've only slept for like 6 hours last night in the last 3 days, so I could really use my sleep (not because I'm tired, but because I look like a pale raccoon with a hoodie when everybody else is gettin' some tan, wearing shorts and summer dresses, enjoying the summer-like weather).
Ohwell, guess I'll try again tomorrow..
Hoy to all!
I need advice for NNs.
I wanna make a chess engine that uses an NN. (see collabs)
I want the NN to output a probability for each move.
However, i dont know what data to train the NN with.
If i train it with the moves from an engine, it simulates an engine and that sucks.
If i train it from games, i only see one move, and thus, cant train the other moves.
My thougt is, that maybe, i let the NN play an entire game and if it loses, it adjusts itself somehow. But how?
If you wanna contribute, email me :firstname.lastname@example.org
I'm glad the Devrant++ program is here. We've been discussing how to make Devrant profitable for a long time now, and it's been finally implemented.
Also amazing how many people signed up for it. Even though collabs had almost no buyers, 28 people have signed up for Devrant++ so far, and it hasn't been a day yet.
A quick question for @dfox @trogus: are you planning to make Devrant++ giftable like Reddit Gold?2
Just thought I should throw it out here, you know that we can't post collabs from desktop version of devRant? It's really cancer...2
Never saw any collab since the update where they removed the tab...
I thought collabs are there to find collaborators. How should one find collaborators when no one sees your collab?8
Is it just me or is the Collab section gone from the Bar.
Seems to view Collabs now, need to uncheck all other categories which is a bit annoying?10
None of my collabs were walk in a park. Some were better, and some worse. Never worked in a team that worked without serius communication problems. Some individuals stuck out as great for me to work with. I guess you can’t have a perfect team.1
Well it may be the only learning collab, I didn't read everything. But I started a Entity Component System library to learn some stuff like metaprogramming : https://devrant.io/collabs/826092/...
And I'll be really happy if some people could give me some advices / suggestions about generic C++ libraries and this code :D
I love you <3
More a positive rant...
Just casually looked into an invitation to a collab tool my workplace set up for discussing optimizations of workflows, internal collabs, communication, yada yada...
Just to figure out, that there's A LOT of room for improvement being discussed and new ideas related to our work. Which is fucking great! Like "Hey we could maybe introduce A/B testing for our software" or "We should change the way our CI/CD works".
One of the best things I've seen so far: "We should do smth about (react) component XY, as it currently holds many configurable parameters for look and feel with too many possibilities" ... these components are like each 1 big file or so, that covers EVERY possibility. I had a feeling in my gut that some things were built quite complicated, but originally with a good idea/intention in mind. I thought that I just needed time to get used to new things. Now I know that I need to learn nevertheless but that things NEED improvement and that others agree on that, too.
I think this is a good sign when a company tries to reflect on itself to become better.2
How many of you actually work on projects on your free time?
I'm thinking of building a common UI pulling lfg projects from Devrant collabs, Twitter, Reddit, etc... But I have no idea if it's something people would want.
Smash that subscribe button and let me know what you think on the comment section
lfg = looking for group7
I've recently launched a node js package fast-freeze. It makes an object read only by converting it into series of functions. Though it is faster but looks ugly to use. Eg giveMe("server")("port").
Any suggestion to make it less ugly?4
After latest update of devRant android app,
Button to check collabs on bottom bar has been removed, and filter is showing only 10 collabs.2
Is it possible to sort collabs by the most popular? It would be cool if there was an indicator of how many people want to work on a collab as well, or even indicators showing the project is shipped and is available.2
thank you for unexpectedly changing your code i included on your recommendation and now all of my modules are broken!
even if this is just a side project i hate when others break my shit and i don't even have the time to fix it.1
Made a proof of concept combination of React + Highland.js + Recompose: https://codepen.io/hedgepig/pen/...
It's scrappy now, but the idea is a streaming alternative to redux/mobx whatever. This nice thing is one can treat events as a function over time, meaning one can map, pipe, reduce (scan), zip etc.
Going to try it on a side project (potentially Hive Sim: https://devrant.io/collabs/975778) and see how it goes.
Like collabs, we should have a new section for only technical discussions about anything like common practices, is there a better way to do this, how's the new tech, general discussions about a library or language etc.
I'm not much interested in the jokes and that's all I see in my feed. Not that I hate that aspect but I prefer more of the tech talk.
Who's with me?5
could you introduce categories for the collabs as through the ++ thing they are going to explode 😅1
Suggest to add a search bar in the "Collabs" section, that way we can find interesting project easily. Search by tag will be cool.3
Side project <3 well let's dream a little with this one.
I want to 'finish' my ECS library https://devrant.io/collabs/826092/...
And after that I want to make a cross platform window manager, and after that again a cross platform package manager, and with that a little gui library using blend2D which take full control of my window manager.
And well I'd like to make a server and a client for matrix too :D
OH, I need to find a job... Fuck
Looks like no one really purchased devRant collabs listing yet..all were using there +2000's for there 1 free listing 🤔1
Are there any good collabs from devrant which are widely in use? Or may be a finished app/product?
Asking after a discussion with a friend and sadly I can't name any. :|1
Soon launching a social networking app just for devs. Post Dev memes, Collab, rant, brainstorm over ideas, reach out to anyone for chat, post your cool devspace pictures and earn rewards. Stay tuned!
Ps- I know there are many similar platforms, this is just a project I developed learning coding app development so just don't brag me about the concept. Although, a better UI/UX never hurts!
The project is fully coded by me and am open for Sr. Devs collabs for the project.16
How do I create a Collab..
Well, I'm looking to form a team of 2 - 4 members. We will be devoted to learning machine learning through books, Kaggle, self assignments and various group discussions and pair programming. We will form a group name, open a GitHub account and upload our projects there. Am looking up to extending it to build projects together. This can also help us build our portfolios.
There are no tight requirements. But some good programming skills especially in Python will be great and a good understanding of high school math. We will be learning together.3
I'm starting an app open-source. Consists of an emergency "sonar", which you will publish notices and reply too with your connected peers. And I need suggestions and collabs. Can see on my GitHub: github.com/roqueando/konarium.io
Who is interested in helping in backend or frontend I started a workgroup on slack too, so here is the room: todevmore.slack.com
If you have a question, comment below I will reply.
Has anyone used Collabs here?
I think it's a great feature to have, but haven't seen any projects popping up on it fora while1
Been a while since I was here last time. Nothing changes much at first glance...
Anyways, how to post to collabs?)3
