One day when I was about 8 years old my friend and I were in the library. We decided we wanted to try to make a baseball website because we both likes baseball (this was around 1998). We picked up a book on HTML and my dad took it out for us. My dad was also a programmer so he said he would help us learn. We went home that afternoon and made a little website!
I knew right then that I really enjoyed programming and creating things with code, but I realized I wanted to be a programmer in middle school and high school. One of my friends and I started building Flash games. To see if people were playing them, I added in a call to each game that hit a PHP script on our server. I'll never forget the days/weeks that one of our most popular games caused our sever to get hammered and our shared host said they were going to boot us.
It was an awesome feeling knowing people were enjoying these games that we worked really hard on, and that's one of the main reasons I always wanted to be coding/creating things that people enjoy using.22 -
On a break I went into a Best Buy to browse laptops. I had no intention on buying from them because they suck, but I just wanted to touch a few and look at specs. A salesman then thought it was a smart idea to approach me. Immediately, he was talking down to me about specs and asking if I needed it for email, Facebook, Instagram, and the like. I'll be honest, I am super girlie in my appearance and mannerisms. So I get it, I suppose. The big pseudo-nerd is going to help the little girl find a cute, social media laptop. He actually walked me over to a pink HP Stream lol. Sure, I like pink, but I don't want a useless paperweight of a machine. When I mentioned I need a new rig for coding, he actually chuckled and said "really?". So I replied "yes really, you presumptuous cockbag" and walked out. Needless to say, I won't be buying there.153

One company i applied for never wanted to give me the job because they where building a prototype and they wanted someone familiar with their stack to get things up in a short time span.
*Fast forward 7 months*
The company i work currently with has been developing prototypes for startups to help validate their ideas and guess what, the bunch above came to our company unknowing that i work here and i have been put on the project as a lead.
Lol man, you cant write this stuff9 -
I tutor people who want to program, I don't ask anything for it, money wise, if they use my house as a learning space I may ask them to bring cookies or a pizza or something but on the whole I do it to help others learn who want to.
Now this in of itself is perfectly fine, I don't get financially screwed over or anything, but...
Fuck me if some students are horrendous!
To the best of my knowledge I've agreed to work with and help seven individuals, four female three male.
One male student never once began the study work and just repeatedly offered excuses and wanted to talk to me about how he'd screwed his life up. I mean that's unfortunate, but I'm not a people person, I don't really feel emotionally engaged with a relative stranger who quite openly admits they got addicted to porn and wasted two years furiously masturbating. Which is WAY more than I needed to know and made me more than a little uncomfortable. Ultimately lack of actually even starting the basic exercises I blocked him and stopped wasting my time.
The second dude I spoke to for exactly 48 hours before he wanted to smash my face in. Now, he was Indian (the geographical India not native American) and this is important, because he was a friend of a friend and I agreed to tutor however he was more interested in telling me how the Brits owed India reparations, which, being Scottish, I felt if anyone was owed reparations first, it's us, which he didn't take kindly too (something about the phrase "we've been fucked, longer and harder than you ever were and we don't demand reparations" didn't endear me any).
But again likewise, he wanted to talk about politics and proving he was a someone "I've been threatened in very real world ways, by some really bad people" didn't impress me, and I demonstrated my disinterest with "and I was set on fire once cos the college kids didn't like me".
He wouldn't practice, was constantly interested in bigging himself up, he was aggressive, confrontational and condescending, so I told him he was a dick, I wasn't interested in helping him and he can help himself. Last I heard he wasn't in the country anymore.
The third guy... Absolute waste of time... We were in the same computer science college class, I went to university and did more, he dossed around and a few years later went into design and found he wanted to program and got in touch. He completes the code schools courses and understandably doesn't quite know what to do next, so he asks a few questions and declares he wants to learn full stack web development. Quickly. I say it isn't easy especially if it's your first real project but if one is determined, it isn't impossible.
This guy was 30 and wanted to retire at 35 and so time was of the essence. I'm up for the challenge, and so because he only knows JavaScript (including prototypes, callbacks and events) I tell him about nodejs and explain that it's a little more tricky but it does mean he can learn all the basis without learning another language.
About six months of sporadic development where I send him exercises and quizzes to try, more often than not he'd answer with "I don't know" after me repeatedly saying "if you don't know, type the program out and study what it does then try to see why!".
The excuses became predicable, couldn't study, playing soccer, couldn't study watching bake off, couldn't study, couldn't study.
Eventually he buys a book on the mean stack and I agree to go through it chapter by chapter with him, and on one particular chapter where I'm trying to help him, he keeps interrupting with "so could I apply for this job?" "What about this job?" And it's getting frustrating cos I'm trying to hold my code and his in my head and come up with a real world analogy to explain a concept and he finally interrupts with "would your company take me on?"
I'm done.
"Do you want the honest unabridged truth?"
"Yes, I'd really like to know what I need to do!"
"You are learning JavaScript, and trying to also learn computer science techniques and terms all at the same time. Frankly, to the industry, you know nothing. A C developer with a PHD was interviewed and upon leaving the office was made a laughing stock of because he seemed to not know the difference between pass by value and pass by reference. You'd be laughed right out the building because as of right now, you know nothing. You don't. Now how you respond to this critique is your choice, you can either admit what I'm saying is true and put some fucking effort into studying cos I'm putting more effort into teaching than you are studying, or you can take what I'm saying as a full on attack, give up and think of me as the bad guy. Your choice, if you are ready to really study, you can text me in the morning for now I'm going to bed."
The next day I got a text "I was thinking about what you said and... I think I'm not going to bother with this full stack stuff it's just too hard, thought you should know."23 -
This one guy REALLY WANTED to work on the hardware (aka arduino in this case) part.
After hours of trying (with 8 guys) of get it to work on windows which just didn't happen, he still refused to even live boot into a Ubuntu machine.
At the end of the day one of the members went to sit down with him to talk about it and the guy finally gave in.
Two seconds into Ubuntu and arduino was successfully up and running!
Then, every day whenever he didn't get something, he'd just do nothing for the entire day while claiming to be working. The team leader sat down with him and I did too, offering him to sit next to me for a day to see how backend stuff went (I was the backender).
Did it but it just went back to the same old bullshit.
I honestly don't mind it if you find it difficult to ask for help but if you, after numerous chances and conversations, still don't do shit, sorry but fuck off.
He was a nice guy and blamed his autism for it but that's just not how it works.9 -
So I visited my aunt's house a few days back.
They heard I write code (read: Google and copy-paste from Stack Overflow), and wanted me to help repair their computers.
Saw my cousin playing Battlefield 4 at sub-20 fps with a GTX 750 Ti on the lowest settings. His fucking CPU fan was bust, and judging by the amount of dust in his system, I literally thought he was cramming dust in there on purpose.
After a heavy dusting, another stick of RAM (4GB -> 12GB), a new heatsink (CoolerMaster T400i), and a fresh copy of Windows 10 (along with Office, etc.), he could play games at 60+ fps again.
What do I get? Not even a fucking thank you. Just a "you done yet? I want to play video games."
I mean... Gee. Your cousin flew all the way to a new continent, spent his precious vacation time helping you out, and all he gets is a cold-ass shoulder.
Even my fucking ex gave me more than that.16 -
Another funny Linux encounter from my study that I suddenly remembered.
This guy said he didn't want to work with things/services that use Linux because he wanted to support software devs by buying software. I get the idea but yah...
Linux teacher: well then why don't you start with disconnecting from the WiFi. After that drop services like fb and WhatsApp which you use a lot. Also, good luck in the dev world as you're mooost probably going to encounter Linux and for being able to finish this study you'll need to succeed on Linux classes as well!
He just sat there like 'help'. A lot of fellow students were giggling as well.
Really though, my Linux teacher was an awesome young guy!11 -
There are times when being "friendly neighbor it guy" pays back.
I have a neighbors, their son is little less intelligent than average person after being injured in accident, I help them from time to time. He gets the pc trashed with adware, usual stuff, they ask me to clean it up.
Recently I broke my arm. They offered to cook for me until I recover to full health... Seriously, that's huge help when you live alone and spend most time working. I'm glad to have them.
Wanted to share with you guys, there are people who appreciate your help with their pc and can give back if you're in need.3 -
Our teacher wanted to show us a video in class so she opened Internet explorer (windows 7) used bing to search for the video and clicked on the link.
The video didn't work and instead there was an error message saying 'Your browser is too old, please use a more modern browser, for example mozilla firefox'
She looked at the error message for around 30 seconds like it had just told her that it is gonna explode in a minute. After some time one of my friends asked if she needed help. Here is what happened:
F: do you need any help?
T: No (very serious voice)
Teacher shuts down computer, stands up, looks at our class angrily and says in a very serious voice:
T: you broke the computer although you aren't allowed to touch it!
Me: mother of god...5 -
How did I start:
It was 1994. I had been kicked out of school on academic behavior. I was working at as a telemarketer to pay the bills. I got drunk on St. Patrick's day and over slept my shift. My boss was going to fire me but said he wanted to give me a second chance. He asked if I knew anything about computers. I said no. He said if I was willing to learn, our IT guy was burning out and needed help. I said ok. Next thing I know I'm learning how to write SQL and importing data to print call cards. I read the manual for Foxpro and started building small desktop apps as labor saving devices. 6months later in knew more than our IT guy. Later a friend showed me "the Internet". I went back to our IT guy in amazement. He said it was just a fad. He called it the CB Radio of the 90s. Our network we ran was called Lantastic.
I immediately quit went back to school and changed my major. I have been a full stack Java Web developer will the heavy emphasis on UI since 1999.3 -
So. A while ago I was on OkCupid, trying to find the Pierre to my Marie Curie (without the whole brain getting crushed under a horse carriage wheel obviously) and I decided the best way was to have my profile lead with my passion for technology. It turned out pretty unique, if I do say so myself.
At the end of it, I amassed some interesting and unique messages:
- A Java pickup line (that I never responded to. Yes I'm a very basic Devranter)
- A request to turn the man's software into hardware (to which I politely informed him that this was scientifically impossible unless a reader proves me wrong)
- Another impossible request to turn his floppy disk into a hard drive (how outdated too, why not HDD to SSD for faster speed amirite? That was awful don't mind me)
- A sincere request to help troubleshoot a laptop (Honestly I would've helped with help requests but this is a dating site...)
- A sincere request to help debug a student project followed with a link to a GitHub repo
- Another sincere request with studying for a computer exam
- And lastly, my favourite: a sincere job offer by a guy who went from flirtatious to desperate for a programmer in a minute. He was looking for *insert python, big data, buzzwords here* and asked me for a LinkedIn. I proceeded to inquire exactly what he wanted me to do. He then asks me to WRITE a Python tutorial and that he would pay a few cents per word written so he could publish it. Literally no programming involved.
Needless to say I went to look elsewhere.26 -
Last teacher rant from me and this one is about: my mentor.
Let's call him Bob.
He was a person who'd always be ready to help you out, did some lessons on bullying and the effects of it, stood by me many times when I'd have hard times with something I'd trouble and one of the most important things, he had a very good sense of humor!
Also, since I always wore a suit (still do), he introduced 'FaF' day, aka, Fancy as Fuck day. Every Wednesday the guys who wanted to would come in suits.
Yup, he got me through loads of stuff, miss that guy :)7 -
A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -
I literally cringed today when my neighbor wanted help installing an app, she didn't tell me it was her banking app... And the thing I needed to help with was logging in... So she told me her bank details...
Even though I said (multiple times) it was dangerous to do so, and that she can't just trust people with this kind of information...
WHY ARE PEOPLE SO GOD DAMN STUPID WHEN IT COMES TO SECURITY!7 -
Brother of my friend came to me and asked me to teach him C as it was most important lesson in high school CS. I agreed and started with data types, conditional statements, loops and others that were mostly exam oriented. He was doing good. Then I thought of teaching him a life lesson and introduced him to pointers(questions about pointers are very rare in exams). As soon as I started the pointers, things got pretty bored and he went off topic and started talking about a girl he has crush on and told he wanted to know when her birthday was so that he could gift her something to be ahead of the crowd trying to impress her. I thought to help him out, afterall he's like my younger brother and told him I can help. Result of his previous exam were out then, providing symbol number on Examination Board's website would do the trick because it would return full data of students result which had birthday in it. I modified my previous script to fetch data of his school's result and pass the data to a file. They're together since last few months. He reminds me time to time that my code is what got them together.8

I can't believe this company.
They want to stop using Certificates because it bothers the customer.
I had to use https because we were using service workers for a PWA.
I tried explaining we need them for the product to work, and also it's a basic security measure.
They were removing the certificates without my knowledge.
I found out because a colleague wanted a way to disable the service worker and asked me for help.
The manager said your not the boss of the company, it's not your company to make decisions.
Just do what they say, he tried to justify the decision from above, I said ok when was the last time you installed a certificate? he said never.
Ok, then what the fuck are you talking about, its 10 minutes to get a certificate letscrypt HELLO.
This company is very hierarchical 1900 style, I'm the person who does innovation in the organization, that's the most fucked up part, they say no to everything.
OMG, I'm going to quit.
There just asking to get hacked, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Is this common or are they morons?17 -
Guys, my unfortunately daily rant of my pm
I was told to create a docker env for our team. Good. Document the process so everyone can know what to do. Good.
My PM follows what he wants to instead of step by step and changes whatever he wants to.
I am asked for help because he doesnt know. No prob.
Me: "Do this, do this and.."
PM: "that doesnt matter, trust me, I could change it and.."
Me: "...and it wont work"
PM: "I know suff too, check" *does his changes aaaaaand doesnt work*
* awkward staring*
That happened a while ago.
This week, he crashed his git repo because he was doing things in docker team (including him) decided not to.
Took me more enough time explaining him "you are not supposed to do that in the container" funny fact he wanted to prove that his way was right and even if he did my way it would crash.
Sooooo he did my way just to prove how wrong I was. Everything worked flawlessly. Rage-still-awkward staring.
Plus the "aww that's weird. I dont know how this happened" -
Best: Got a job at a rather big company, totally unqualified. They wanted me to start working on an android app to help maintain safety in their manufacturing halls using beacon/ibeacons technology. I had never made an android app, nor worked with gui. All by myself, I created the app and its necessary back-end logic. They were so impressed they wanted me back during the holidays or whenever i have the time, as I'm still studying.6

Resurrect happypenguin.org
This particular site appeared in the year 1998 with the goal to make gaming on Linux easier and more fun.
Unfortunately, 2013 the site went down due to lack of funding and time for the creator Bob Zimbinski. He released the database to the public but removed the code itself because it was created in the 90's and was a big security risk.
I want to resurrect happypenguin.org and I want some brave souls who want to participate with this. I am not a coder (I can only sysadmin) so It would be awesome if someone wanted to help out with this.
Would be awesome if you could make if look like the classic site, or make it very similar to it or https://distrowatch.com/ that also has a very retro style to it. It would also be great if the site was ad-free.
I will take care of the hosting part (servers, DNS, domain).50 -
We recently got a new trainee (Not sure if its correct germans correct me i mean "Praktikant"). This guy studied computer Engineering and canceld his studies to work as a developer. So this guy is working on a typo 3 Page for a Client and asks me for help because He got a follding error. Im in the last year of My studies btw. He sends me very Bad formatted HTML template file. I quickly correct the formatting and fix the 3 open Tags That He forogt to Close. send it back to him and walk to his workplace to See him integrate it to his own code again. He Double clicks the HTML file an Google Chrome opens. He then looks at me and says and Where is the code. I say to him That he just opened the HTML file with his Browser. And He responds with yes but i wanted to See the code Not this.
Im done for today 😑😑11 -
My new glasses are coming soon :)
Now I won't be as blind as a blindfolded grandmother inside a dark cave at night!
Everytime I code, my nose practically touches the screen, because even my mom's old glasses don't really help.
I can barley use Devrantron because of my blindness, but at least I can see well on mobile.
If you are wondering how my old ones broke, well, my little sister sat on them. That little demon, I love her, but she's pure evil.
Oh, and she did it on purpose btw. I asked her why and she said she wanted to know how it feels like to sit on glasses. She's not crazy, she's 6 years old lol.64 -
(overheard colleagues)
"hey, client x wants to speak to you, can I put them through?"
"what's it it about?"
*mumbles something*
"dafuq?! Oh well, put him through already 😑"
Me: hey, what did he want?
Colleague: they wanted help with setting up a page on their site with a maintenance message for when their site goes down.
Me: ah righ.... wait what? What's the function of a maintenance page on a site if the entire site is down?!
Colleague: yeah, that 🤣
Well, okay, then 😶12 -
My mom has a new IPad.
it took my mother and sister 4 hours to make an apple ID.
I offered to help, but they said they wanted to do it themselves
So, i opened my sister's laptop and opened google, i googled: "How to setup an apple ID". left the laptop near them, and hoped they notice it, and they did.7 -
Based on a true story that happened right now.
Dad: "how do i download youtube videos?"
Me: "just google youtube downloader and download them from some site, thats how i do it"
Dad: "WHAT!!??? You want me to fucking google it? I dont know how to fucking google for those things, you're the IT guy and you should know how to do this, if I wanted to google it i wouldnt ask you for help. You know what, get the fuck out of my face i dont need ur help, get out"28 -
You know, sometimes I wish I had friends who knew how to code or new a bit about the programming world. Then I could show them my projects and they could help out of they wanted. I could also get them to properly criticize my designs and script. Instead of the ones that just scroll past your shit and say nothing at all, you know, people who would actually give a little bit of a shit. Sigh.4

I'm freelancing and there was a guy who needed help with JavaFX. He gave me code only to his view class so I don't steal the rest... It was around 5k lines and it was full of compilation errors because of missing classes. While checking the code I realised something is really wrong with his model classes. So I asked maybe he could send me this one model class that was suspicious. So he did and it was around 10k lines long and had around 200 fields... ALL OF THEM FUCKING STRINGS except 3. You know what the rest of 3 were? 2 Lists of strings and a boolean... It was his "main" model class, he was using it for everything. It had setters for all fields and empty default constructor, so he would just instantiate the object and would set the fields that he wanted to use. Need new functionality? Just add 5more String fields and set them!2

Note: our PM is new.
PM: can you help me?
Me: sure, what do you need?
PM: where do the folders with all the techie stuff come from?
I had no context and spent the next 20 minutes trying to work out what folders she was on about. Turned out she wanted to know where the client side folders on our development server come from, was going to explain 'Gulp' and 'Branch' to her but I think I'd be there for the rest of the day... Why do 'tech' companies hire non-tech-savie people.4 -
Girlfriend had issue with her Python code (she does mathmatics, not actual programming):
```
t = 51.74636335135748
i = int(t*100) // 5174, wrong value
```
instead of
```
t = 51.74636335135748
i = int(t)*100 // 5000, right value...
```
She asked me if I could fix it for her.
I found the issue but wanted her to understand what went wrong.
She didn't care "because she didn't have time for it".
Well, then it's quite simple for me: I have no time to help her :^)7 -
On March 10th russian government tried to block or at least slow down twitter because twitter refused to delete some posts that russian govt wanted to be deleted.
Things that were down that day in russia:
- rostelecom (largest russian isp)
- FSB (russian CIA)
- SKRF (russian FBI)
- RKN (russian FBI but for internet control)
- gosuslugi (basically the govt website for all utilities imaginable including but not limited to medical help, taxes, passports, everything)
- kremlin website
Things that were up that day in russia, operating at a regular speed:

Ok. Yesterday I finished building my compiler I have to say: it was a pretty darn big thing with 7000 Lines of code.
I did it alone and with almost no help.
I wanted to give some advice in case someone wants to program a compiler. I knaw its useless in times of lex and yacc, but anyway.
-have a good idea for the language
-learn about parser/lexer
-learn assembler
-do it like me: output the assembler to a file and let it assemble/link by the linux standart-tools (call the commands)
-Have fun. Fun is essential in coding
I hope I was able to help people who want to build a compiler alone... Yau can always ask questions ;~)

My grandmother asked me to help her find an article about a recipe for a chocolate cake. The recipe she wanted was the first result on Google, so I sent her a LMGTFY link (let me Google that for you, a website that writes by itself the word or the sentence). Later on the same day, she said that her laptop was possessed by a ghost.3

I was curious about how the Genetic Algorithm works, wanted to try it out.
So I've created some toy cars using Three.js and "asked" them to do the self-parking with a little bit of Genetic Algorithm help.
It was fun to see how those toy cars were evolving and actually started to be less stupid :D

You are cool guys :)8 -
The following is written in Latin, German, and English, and is written in a custom script called "VuetendScriptor" aka "MadScript".
Translation as follows:
Hello devRant!
I am very happy to announce my new script "MadScript". I am so happy right now! I have wanted to do this for a long time! Thank you everyone for your help! I could not have done this without you!58 -
Do you believe that anyone can do anything? (See: 13th Doctor)
Can anyone become a programmer? Or is it not for everybody?
My cousin has started "learning" C programming at college. I was actually surprised when he first told me that he wanted to study programming and get an IT degree. He would give an impression of a spoiled non-tech son of a non-tech manager to you. (He plays games on his Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and uses his MacBook Air to watch anime). He was never good at studying or learning. I immediately thought that it was totally not for him and he should give it a second thought, but he said that he was absolutely sure about it. It's been a few weeks now and he's finding it all really difficult.
I think one should like learning constantly and should like solving problems to make it all an enjoyable learning experience.
Self-study is also really important, especially if you have garbage professors (like he says he has).
I always try to help him. I told him to focus on self-study, recommended good books (he even bought one for C), recommended good online resources. But he's a procrastinator leveled over 9000. So, you'd understand, he's not doing any of that right now. I even told him that if he didn't self-study, he might regret it one day, but he just can't bring himself to self-study, he says. I'm gonna continue helping him in any way I can, but I guess you can't really help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.
Thanks for reading. :)13 -
I created a my portfolio using ReactJS and actually open sourced the whole thing. Within just a few weeks, its got 67 stars, 38 forks, 3 watches, 1 issue, 1 pull request, and so on.
People out of nowhere messaged me in my whatsapp, skype, facebook to help them in React.
People out of nowhere wanted to hire me, even though I'm still working in a company.
People out of nowhere messaged me just to tell me, how much they liked my work and appreciated it for open sourcing it.
It felt awesome! Like, I can't explain how amazing it felt! ^_^8 -
Was explaining a technical concept at a "family" dinner. Suddenly stepmother wanted my help for something technical.
Stepmother: Say Awlex, could you help me install some software I recently bought?
Me: (Not this shit again) I even don't know what software you're talking about. How is the software called, what does it do?
Sm: it's calles digital... *long pause*
Me: (I don't like where this is going)
Sm: software... *another long pause*
Me: (fuck me harder than that lightly clothed woman outside)
Sm: something... *long pause*
Me: (alright brain, which way out of here doesn't involves me creating a bullet hole in either one of us?)
Sm: And you can use it to sell something...
Me: (tf do you event sell?!)
Sm: but not like ebay
Me: (what is it then? A platform for selling services? I don't even know what kind of software you'd have to install, given that most of these platforms are be web applications, whcih makes sense for selling stuff on the internet)
Sm: Anyway, could you help me install it? It would take me hours to get into it.
Me: (You think just installing would solve it? As soon as I install it, you probably expect me to be your walking manual as well, don't you?) Look, I'm gonna be honest with you, since I started working I don't have nearly as much free time as I used to have (Not everybody works when they feel like it, you know that?) I get home at around almost 7pm (most of the time) and don't really wanna work afterwards. Most of the time there's a support service from the people who made this software and they would be glad to help you. (Sorry support team, for pushing this bundle of incompetence onto you, but I guess she didn't even listen to my advice).
After that she didn't back down and still wanted my help. Then my grandmother derailed the conversation and got me out of this. When I thanked her later she yold me that she saw I saw uncomfortable and wanted to help. I love my grandmother.
So I am not going to be your "family" tech support. You b(r)ought this onto yourself. Are more than twice my age and still can't use your brain to solve problems like these on your own and you can even less reason abiut your motives and desires when asking for help. I am sick of you and shutty opinions about people, just because I work as a software engineer doesn't mean I'm exist solely for satisfying your unreasonable desires.
Stop offending me and my profession and get yourself some common sense.
Protip #0: Give me one fucking reason to help you, because you're not family enough and your personality really doesn't bring forth any emotion but annoyance4 -
LONELINESS IS REAL
I am a freshman in a university ( about to complete my first year ) with a girl to boy ratio of around 1:10. During my first semester I was spending a lot of time with friends, chatting up with people and making connections. Due to this my productivity as a dev, if I am even capable of being called that decreased ( I was not a developer before joining , but I had an aim of being one , esp at least the best in my batch ) after 1st year. In retrospect I did nothing productive till 3 months out of 4 in my first sem and the guilt hit me hard . During the last month I had to catch up with my much neglected studies and all I had done was a little bit of html and css, and barely scratched the surface of js( please don't judge me for this :) , I had to start somewhere < although I learned a little bit of C++ > ). BUT I WAS A HAPPY CUNT, and had no sign of lonelines. Now during this sem , I had made progress ( learn js with es6 syntax and still learning, did c++ and extended my knowledge ) . Currently I am working on my Vue full stack app ( along with express and some websocket library , TBD ) < yeh I learnt some backend too > , and increasing my knowledge of dsa using clrs. Although my productivity has increased manifolds but I know feel the need of closure. I am kinda happy with the fact that I know a lot of people around here ( thanks to my extroverted 1st semester ) but sometimes it hits me hard at night when I don't have a monitor to drown my eyes and thoughts in. I have increased my academic performance too but I need someone to share and express my feelings with. I could have made a girlfriend earlier but now most of them are taken and I have lost touch. But believe me, all I want is a companion to spend these lonely days and night ( not talking about as a friend ). Staying away from home isnt easy you know...m :(
KUDOS TO DEVRANT FOR DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY WHERE PEOPLE LIKE ME CAN FEEL SAFE IN OUR NATURAL HABITAT. I COULDN'T HAVE EXPRESSED MY FEELINGS ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT IN A PERSONAL BLOG ( where no one would have read it )
PS1: I apologise if I sounded arrogant about any of my skill, I didn't mean that way. I ain't even that good, just kinda proud of myself a little for achieving something I couldn't have thought.
PS2: Any type of suggestions and help is much appreciated ( considering I am a college student who went into some serious development 4 months ago , I am pretty impressionable ;) )
PS3: Please don't confuse this with depression. I am HAPPY BUT LONELY
PS4: Is there a way so that I can change my username?16 -
Oh, shit, someone wanted dev help or contributors after programming for decades. Shit. That is trolling. THANK YOU N()()B

I was so tired of my job and I wanted to do something of my own. So, I thought why not just follow my heart, I love to travel so I just got into blogging and all with www.blacknwhiteboxes.com and now I have a company of my own where I help people plan trek.1

Some time ago I had ordered a LCD display I wanted to use in a project. Ended up with a vague datasheet and no clue of how to use a 8bit parallel interface. There was also little help on the internet cuz most ppl use a serial interface.
So after HOURS of reading I finally managed to get it to display something!
I sometimes wish some stuff was better documented.12 -
The entire reason I became a developer was so that I could one day build something that I can say has/had a handful of users, that I could build something that helped save someone's life, that helped someone in their time of need.
That reason was fulfilled when I built my only successful and proudest project during a cold night in 2011. I was 16 at the time, and here in South India, there was a major cyclone affecting a portion of our country (Chennai/Tamil Nadu). A lot of my family were in affected areas, and I didn't know what I could do being so far away (around 400kms/250mi away, in Bangalore).
I stayed up all night to build what was then known as ChennaiRains.org. It was a simple website, a directory and a safe house for everyone's information. Whoever needed help, whoever was ready to give help, whoever was volunteering their travel, their time. I didn't think it would help much. I just wanted to make a small difference.
Next morning, after the hangover of the all-nighter I pulled faded away, I see that the website went viral after a few shares on Twitter. The community was so supportive of my little project to help my family and friends. It caught a peak traffic of a million users overnight, no ads, no money made from this, I just earned the experience of a lifetime. It eventually helped a lot of people in need, connected a lot of volunteers and victims.
It has been the epitome of my life. It's the reason I still develop applications to-date, even if they are simple. Somewhere out there, someone needs it, and I want to be able to help to them :)4 -
Tomorrow is my 19th birthday and I'm very excited about it. 😀🎂
Wanted to do something special as a computer geek but wasn't sure.
Hope you can help me !
Thanks 👍16 -
My life could get worse, but it's really shitty now.
Suffering from a serious back injury since last year, my health has been not so positieve lately.
It put a toll on my mood, which in turn asked it's price regarding my relationship. Needless to say that did not go well. Already a fe months single but we kept in touch.
Three days ago my back injury returned, and was unable to lead a normal life. Constant pain, coyld not even move in the house. Even going to the toilet was a terrible experience because when you move, you're in a world of pain.
I asked my ex girlfriend to help me, since she was the only one having a key to my house.
When she arrived i hoped to have some moral support and to help me mive around, ensuring i would not injure myself any more.
Instead i received the cold shoulder. When she wanted to help pe up she did it a bit too hard and the pain sheered thrpughout my body. Screaming in pain.
She promptly left, leaving keys behind.
The hardest part is that she just left without me being able to explain clearly why i screamed. She thought i was yelling at her while in reality i was yelling due to the immense pain.
After that i had to cut ties forever. Tabula rasa. So i removed everything that is related to that time and locked it in my vault.
Since then i can hardly focus, my mibd is numb and i cannot think straight. The alcohol and other sedatives are probably also involved, but still i feel my life is a mountain of depressing shit.
Needed to vent. And yes i post this because i have a need for some understanding, yes for now i crave for some attention and some encouraging, supportive words. I'm left With no other options since the person i wanted it from the most has simply left... And the fact i am unable to actually be social outside...
Fuck friends and relationships, right?13 -
Hahahahahahahahahha I'm not going to do anymore of your "quick" projects that result in shit pay and drain me out. I got actual fulfilling projects I enjoy working on hahahahah not again "friend". The audacity of this guy to ask me to handle a big project alone while he sits on his ass and gets a 50% cut. He should have paid attention in school if he wanted to be a programmer. All he does is lie to clients that he can code yet runs to me to do all the work. Hahahah let's see how he gets out of this one. Not gonna help you today "friend".5
-
Today is the real fuckening at work. The worst part is, you are working your ass off and someone started bugging you constantly on chat and blaming it is effecting his "productivity" because tech team doesn't solve his problem.
I have 4 projects under me with doing day to day operations also. But yeah just few more months before I left this shit. I wanted to shout back, but tried to keep my head cool, though I have already kicked his face many times in my mind.
If you cannot help, at least stop being a dick and appreciate someone trying his best to solve problems.4 -
Loving rantBlock 🙂
I just re-enabled it to show a friend... I really do some of my best work at 2am 😂
FYI:
This collab is still (to the best of my knowledge) the most popular collab on devRant. I ranted a while back that it's open to anyone who wants to get involved to work on production version to publish to mozilla, google etc. Personally I would love to build the rant replacement functionality into a fork of uBlock but I simply don't have the time at the moment - so if your looking for a side project...

You guys, I think I know what is it....I think I know why I wanted to be a developer.
It started off innocently enough. I was a young lad in IT. Wide-eyed. Absorbing anything and everything I could. Then, the asshole clients came.....
I would put on my best customer service face on, and address the client as calmly and as respectfully as I could. Reminding myself that their frustration is understandable.
To deal with the increased time dealing with clients took, I developed scripts to help me handle maintenance and keep my head above water. I developed scripts to streamline equipment provisioning for big deployments. I developed scripts to handle other technicians who didn't log-off the phone queue and fucked up our on-call flow. I put in place email rules to sift through the bullshit and time wasters.
I became a developer to streamline and make myself as efficient as possible. But the clients keep nagging. The bullshit keeps coming. The other players get in your fucking way.
There is no end you guys.... THIS IS ONLY TUESDAY. I can't script the passage of time. I'm....I'm.... I need a fucking nap.1 -
A dev's love story
I first met WebStorm but found her too fat, I wanted a lighter editor to live some JavaScript romance with... I had a date with SublimeText and fell in love with her immediatly. I swore I would NEVER change for anybody else, everything was wonderfull !
Someday, I opened myself to other Typescripted perspectives, I had new projects in life. A coworker introduced me to VSCode. She looked like Sublime, but more convenient. She was easier to use, perfect to achieve my goals. She was also more organized with my files and her beautiful colors made me crazy. But recently, I got mad at her. VScode became slow to understand each of my moves and even threatened me to exit all the time...
I tried to come back visit my Sublime, my real first love. But I knew it would never be like before.
Now I'm here, alone. I don't know what to do with my life. If only I could fall in love again, I don't know if people can help me get out of this hole.
The END9 -

For the past two years I've always wanted to make Programming tutorial videos to help others learn to code while fueling my passion for coding, discovery, and teaching..... and after two years I've finally uploaded my first two videos to YouTube.
I want to cover fun and exciting topics such as how to make custom plugins, create your own linux web server, and more... but decided to do a web basics 101 as my "Hello World" videos to get better in making content and production.
The inspiration for my "Web 101" comes from have a lot of my senior year CS classmates who have never seen HTML/CSS code before and wanting to provide them a source to get the basics all in one place.
I have a lofty goal of getting 10 subscribers by the end of the month. If you wouldn't mind giving me some pinpointers or comments I'd greatly appreciate it!
Also I did buy a new microphone so the sound quality between video one and two should be better!

I was hopelessly lost in a problem when I found an Issue on Github describing the exact same problem.
Unfortunately, the message board it didn't quite help me solving the problem.
Some time later I managed to solve the problem, and remembering the Github issue, I wanted to post an actually helpful message.
Oh but wait. The issue was fucking closed.2 -
I am angry. Do you know why? It's a rhetorical question, because you don't know why I am angry, which is why I'm going to tell you why I'm so. I Followed my friend, " Jane Doe" ( you don't need to know her actual name) to this store in my town. Then these 14-15 years old girls came up to me, and started asking me about my braces. "Where'd you get it?
" How much did it cost ?"
I get these questions like almost every single, and it's annoying. 😒
This one question got me angry. "What 'if' her braces are fake?" A girl said whispering to her friend.
Fake??? My braces are realer than you could ever be, jealous bitch. I said that in my mind, I don't have the guts to say it out loud, besides these girls look like they could tear me to pieces, and I wanted no conflict. I walked away as soon as my friend got her stuffs from the store.
My friend couldn't help but to tease me that I'm a doormat. I guess she's right. 🤔☹😤😟😖26 -
You know what I always hated about Stack Overflow?
When a newbie asks a question and really wants to learn something they get downvoted for 'we're not your teacher. Go learn it somewhere else'
When someone else asks a question and just expects Stack Overflow to magically produce working code for him they also get downvoted for 'we're not a code generator'
When someone finally asks a 'good question' but mentions in the last line it's homework they also get downvoted for 'We won't do your homework'
They also don't tolerate fun or opinions.
I never actually participated in Stack Overflow because to me it felt that whatever I asked, it would get closed for god knows why. And when I actually answered questions, and wanted to help someone, I would get downvoted for 'don't make someone else homework' or 'don't waste your time if they're not willing to put effort in it'
I still always 'used' Stack Overflow but read-only thanks to Google.
Anyone else feels/felt the same way?7 -
Was office SharePoint bitch at one point. This guy wanted me to build a workflow for him that would enforce insane checks on his (peer) colleagues. Asked if his manager approved and obviously they hadn't. So this guy started telling me he would build his own application from scratch and host it on his home server if I didn't help him. Pointing out the business might object to their confidential data being put on his home server didn't put him off. Getting laid off a few months later for gross incompetence did however.3

So, I'm living in a completely computer illiterate family and I was called to help my father with something on a Laptop where he wanted to stream his favorite Soccer-Club.
So I walk up to him, ask what's wrong, and he says (roughly translated from German) "That thing doesn't work!"
And I'm just like ((Wat u mean))
So I ask him to explain the problem in detail.
Apparently his streaming service wasn't loading his stream.
Well damn I say, try searching for the problem on Google and find a solution.
((But no no no imma just call my son for everything that's freaking wrong with tech, he sure knows what to do))
As I'm not that experienced with Webservices as of yet, I had no idea what to do.
He was fucking furious!
"You always act like you know everything about tech and programs and stuff and can't even help me with fixing this Stream-Thing?!"
I responded simply by saying "It's not my area of work!"
Seems like he didn't know the difference between TECH-JESUS and hobbyist software engineer.
So I stand there and he just goes on one of these typical boomer tech illiterate rants, of which I'm sure you can imagine enough being on this platform.
tl;Dr; It pisses me of big time how people are not even trying to understand technology, nor attempting to help themselves by eG. Googling some simple problem, but rather just ask around and then being pissed off if the asked person just doesn't know the answer or can't help!5 -
Playing around with Bard:
Me:Who called me from ...?
Bard: <blah blah blah> Would you like me to run a reverse phone lookup on that number for you?
Me: Yes
Bard: I'm just a language model, so I can't help you with that.
Me: Then why did you ask?
Bard: "I understand that you don't need me to run a reverse phone lookup, and that's perfectly fine. I just wanted to offer the service in case you were interested."
I tweaked the question and Bard responded with a Python script and a phone number regular expression.
Our jobs are safe for now.1 -
I have been creating mods for Skyrim and Fallout for a few years now. One day another modder wanted to make his own game using Unreal Engine 4. I wanted to learn UE4 anyway and the other members have made many mods before, so I joined in.
Well, it turned out I was the only one with a professional programming background (this is where I should have run). The others were all modders who somehow got their shit working. "It works, so it's good enough right?" On top of that UE4 has a visual scripting system called Blueprint. Instead of writing code you connect function blocks with execution lines. Needles to say that spaghetti code gets a whole new meening.
There was no issue board, no concept, no plan what the game should look like. Everyone was just doing whatever he wants and adding tons of gameplay mechanics. Gameplay mechanics that I had to redo because they where not reusable, not maintainable or/and poorly performing.
Coming from a modding background, they wanted to make the game moddable. This was the #1 priority. The game can only load "cooked" assets when it got packaged. So to make modding possible, we needed to include the unpacked project files in the download. This made the download size grow to 20+ GB. 20 GB for a fucking sidescroller. Now, 1 year after release we have one mod online: Our own test mod.
Well we "finished" the game eventually and it got released on Steam. A 20 GB sidescroller for $6.99. It's more like a $2.99 game in my opinion. But instead of lowering the price they increased it to $9.99, because we have spent so much time creating the game. Since that we selled less than 5 more copies. And now they want to make it work on mobile. Guess who will definetly NOT help them.
I have spent ~6 month of my freetime for this project, my rev share is < 100€ and they got me a lot of headaches with all their dumb decisions. Lesson learned. But hey, I am pretty good with UE4 now.4 -
When I cost the company half a million.
We recently got incubated and signed up for an accelerator programme, it was a life changing moment for me especially after having worked with my startup unpaid for almost a year. So naturally, it meant a lot to me.
But my friends / colleagues had to leave for a trip leaving me to work along side this other startup in the same batch. They needed a front end guy for their web stuff so we naturally offered our services except they needed me to work on Angular and I didn't know jack shit about it but pretended I did.
I couldn't reach out to my friends for help because I felt bad and wanted to prove my worth, and I pressured myself to the point where I called the client our batch mate brought on board making him leave.
I lost credibility as a professional, trust as a friend and my place at the office because it's gotten extremely awkward to go back there.
I fucked up my one way ticket out of my current certain household circumstances and realized I'm just a shitty developer who's all talk and no show.9 -
Dropped by my old uni to visit some friends. Met an old classmate who wanted to ask me something about his Python code.
"Oh, no", I thought to myself. "I haven't touched Python in so long, I don't know if I can help, and even then I only knew how to do menial tasks in it!", thinking how to save face and my image of "programmer dropout".
5 minutes later I realized he was mistaking a dictionary for a JSON string, AND was trying to access a dictionary in a list... in a dictionary.
I quietly fixed his print statement which incited an excitement "oh wow, it works!" and quietly returned his laptop. Fun day. -
That moment when...
You’re supposed to be doing work.
You have a deadline.
It’s your sister’s baby shower and you promised to help.
Sis comes over every day to hang with family.
I’ve still not managed to get any work done today, video games and hanging and baking have had my time 🤣
I was up from 12-1 making jelly shots from scratch because my mum wanted blue ones and couldn’t find any blue jelly 😂
They’re bubblegum and for my first attempt I think they look pretty sick.
Will have to find out whether they set in the morning 🙈2 -
I'm taking an Intro to Programming course along aside an Intro to Computers class so I already know about basic programing, still very new to it though! At the end of the Intro to Comp, we're learning about programming and a classmate was having a hard time understanding assignments and variables.
I explained the idea of the input command at least three times and he kept trying to print out a statement he just wanted to write in instead of printing out the input that the user will enter. He also assigned the same name to different variables.
Explained that what he was doing was not versatile and not useful, explained in an example situation, explained by writing some lines of code myself (THRICE), and he still had trouble understanding me. I didn't want to hold his hand the entire time.
Glad that I was called to leave early since I might get too frustrated if I had to stay back and continue to help him.
Hope he managed to finish the assignments successfully though! Feel kinda bad now...2 -
I was drunk at a party and so was this guy, that I knew from scouting and who knew that I was capable of programming, even tho he very clearly disagreed with my choice in language.
We started talking about this new system that we (all scouts in Denmark) have to use and he told me how his work was affected by the fact that this systems API is the purest of shit.
He told me that he would really like someone to help him with his work, cause right now he was alone. They were looking for someone new, but for some reason the boss wanted a new guy to have 5 years of experience in Java... Which they don't use.
So he got my information and would put in a good word for me -
Friends of mine have a new flat.
It's a nice flat. Cheap. Noone wanted it. 100 square meters.
Reason noone wanted it...
Previous owners were bastards from hell.
Really. Every motherfucking room needed to be completely renovated by the owner.
Door frames were made of wood, nice and old - at least the part that was left of them. Splinters, scratch marks, partially broken out of the wall.
2 windows needed to be fully replaced. Rest of the windows needed to be bleached, PET abrasive cleaning solution and the frames needed repair with resin as they drilled into the frames. Then treatment with sealant of course.
Yes. There was no other solution. After bleaching you recognized the windows were white. Before... Let's not talk about it.
The previous owners even managed to destroy the bathtub.
The kitchen tiles... Fat cleaner. Bleaching. Abrasion. Polishing.
Soooo.
Day of moving.
The apartment is in the 6th floor / level.
Cran / lift was ordered.
16 people wanted to come.
7 people came.
2 including myself couldn't lift heavy stuff nor walk the stairs due to health issues.
Crane broke after first try.
Today. I want to murder the previous owners. After torture and crucification.
I'm feeling levels of pain I couldn't Imagine before.
Only hate and beer let's me keep my shit together.
I REALLY didn't think after renovating and cleaning the flat for my friends in the last several weeks that it could get worse.
Boy. I was wrong.
Thanks for letting me vent here. I really feel devastated currently -.-
And I need to help them tomorrow, too.
Bikini Atoll, tchernobyl and every other atom bomb desaster Zone combined looks better than the chaos in their flat.
Everyone who could lift shoved everything inside.
I solo carried everything that wasn't too large in the room and then, as every room looked like desaster, completely managed the kitchen (cleaning, unpacking, trash, placing everything where it belongs and so on) :( :(4 -
I watched this video today about the new Xbox adaptive controllers. I had heard about it before, but never knew how capable or functional it actually was.
And watching that video made me realise exactly how much the tech we build , and support helps many people live the lives they wanted.
All the rants about languages , editors , frameworks aside , things like this were built with an idea and an inclusive intension to help. And that's exactly what we all are here for :)
do check the video out it made my day and I'm sure it will make yours too ..

Ok now let's get our pitchforks back and go hunt some vim users down.

There was a meme that was going around a couple of years ago, it was picture of the System32 folder in Windows and underneath it was a text that said "If you want to make your internet download speed faster, delete this folder". I had shared it on Facebook, thinking nobody could fall for this.
Surely enough, about half an hour later came the surge of messages saying that they're not able to delete the folder and wanted help. Most of them were my classmates in college.3 -
Our HR guy is a tool. He requested I help him extract some data from our database. Which based on what he requested I supplied he then started trying to bully me because the data I gave him wasn’t what he wanted. Ringing me every 5 mins asking if it was ready, comparing me to another colleague who wrote the system.
When we blew up at him telling him to back off he continued. Anyway he still works here and persists in being a tool. i on the other hand ignore him.
I’m pretty sure that the HR bullying an employee is wrong, not massively worried about it just annoyed6 -
I study and work as a tech support guy in a company and the head of Android development wanted to speak to me : want to help us with some changes in the app? Now I am a junior Android developer. Not even mad 🤔3

"How useful was your CS degree and why?" - I studied CS at university, my education always was incredibly useful.
Firstly, the knowledge you gain in itself is useful. Furthermore, we explain and understand the unknown in terms of the known. Thus, the more you know, the easier you learn new things.
But secondly and more importantly, university teaches you *how* to think. In a structured way, like a scientist or engineer. To see the bigger picture.
I originally wanted to end here, but I've read a couple of entries doubting the usefulness of any CS degree.
Our profession isn't all that different from others. It is, however, relatively young. How's this for an analogy: We're still in the stage of building sand castles. That's fine, and can be self taught. But in years to come we'll want to build bridges and sky scrapers, which are not just "sand castles scaled up". Our sand castle knowledge won't help us here. Sky scrapers need entirely different materials and a good understanding of architectural statics.
Can you still teach that yourself? Maybe. Will a formal education with a degree be useful and generally more trusted? I bet.3 -
New meeting with the CEO and Chairman of Middle Company.
As the last week shit hit the fan hard, today they wanted to have an appeased relationship until my departure. They praised my job and what I accomplished in two years. And started a really well-executed blowjob (figuratively!).
They continued with the really fucking bad situation they are in and asked if I would help them. And I answer "Yes, I'll help you as much as possible."
And they asked if I could stay a little more. And I answered, "No, I can't".
They said that they are willing to double my pay for the next six months if I stayed. And I answered, " That's nice, but I can't".
They asked if I could convince some of the middle management (IT) to withdraw their resignation. And I answered, "No, I can't". Once again, they offered some money. This time I told them it wasn't a money problem.
They asked how could I tell that I was willing to help them if I refused everything they asked.
I simply replied " By doing my job!"
I think they got my "screw you, I'm going home!"6 -
I tried out Perl this year, really loved it. No one wanted to do a project with me in Perl though, so I moved on. Now I am doing my projects in javascript. I can't help but think that there is something very wrong with me for liking just the languages everyone hates with a passion. 🙃3

Today’s lesson in C programming:
DON’T use
system( “clear” );
in Mac OS...
Causes seg Fault in ur program when it is perfectly correct...
What happened was... a friend wanted help with C programming and had written this code... but it was getting seg Fault randomly... just random seg Fault when his code was correct...
I pinpointed the seg Fault to a printf statement but the statement was correct...
Off to search the issue I went, found out that flushing problems can occur in printf if u don’t use \n.
This happens randomly. Thought this might b the reason...
Went to a VM running Arch Linux and tested the code there... worked perfectly. No issues whatsoever.
From a distant memory I remembered some people discussing to never use system( “clear” ); since it causes issues.
Thought to remove that line from code, thinking it wouldn’t make any difference.
Well imagine my shock when the code worked fine after remove that freaking line...
M gonna blame this one on Mac OS since arch had no issues with it 😡😡
Now to find alternative to system( “clear” );
Damm it I spent 4-5 hours on this crap!!!!!!9 -
Ok so to recap, we had shit beginning. We couldn't find client like 3 months and thank god that we agreed that we don't register the firm right away. If we did we would be broke a long time ago.
We found first client and he wanted to build some scrapers with gui. So me being BackEnd developer I created API for scraping (boredom) and my friend created website for that api and I just created gui that displays that site. The project was about 1200$. And since there are 3 of us we splited it into 3x400$.
After that it was again really hard to find clients again. We thought of quitting and just going to uni or something but we really didn't want to and anyways we needed to get money for uni ourselfs if we wanted to go.
So we said that as we are not paying anything and not losing money we will continue as long as we can.
And after we managed to get a hold of it and now we have 2 clients and after we finish them we have 2 more.
So I think the most important thing is that you help your coworkers. My friend who finds clients had a rough time at the beggining as I mentioned. So all 3 of us got together and started spamming people for few weeks. That's how we found our first client.
So now we are running. Not a milion dollar company but we are happy that we are doing what we love and that we have money doing it. We aim higher but we don't want to hurry and screw things up as we are young still.
Also thank you for getting interested after 300 days :)11 -
When I was in school, people came to me every once in a while, wanting to make a new great MMORPG with destructible terrain and factions.
Then came the guys who wanted to make a new amazing app that will help them fix some minor life inconveniences (like tracking expiry dates on the groceries in your fridge).
And now there are guys who want to make blockchain, IoT and chatbot based startups.
I just want to watch youtube and post shit on the internet. :(1 -
One of my friends works in NVIDIA and slwas previously a part of the graphics department where she worked on the rtx 3070 and briefly on 3080 card. The funny thing is she gets paid very low (SDE in India) and sadly her monthly salary is less than the price of either of the cards. While she is not keen on gaming, some of her mates are in a similar situation and just dream about buying it.
All I wanted to do was point out the irony wherein people who help make the thing themselves cant afford it.50 -
So my teacher wanted to play a movie cos the class got good test results, and so she asked me how to play a movie on her laptop and get it on the TV and this is how it went down...
Teacher: Sukhi, do you think you could help me.
Me: Yea sure, what do you need help with
Teacher: So I want to play a movie tomorrow but I don't know how to get it up on the TV
Me: Oh its easy just get a HDMI cable and plug your laptop into it.
Teacher: Oh yea I have like 6 of those. Ok then see ya tomorrow.
*The next day*
Teacher: Hey Sukhi, heres the HDMI cable. *Pulls out a AUX cord*
Me: *laughing and crying at the same time*2 -
I have a working build!
Application Ally is a tool to help you track your job search. It has contact management, resume builder (or your can upload your own), task list, and some other neat features.
Why? because I was sick of carrying a notebook with me everywhere to keep my research on companies organised. I wanted to see my history with a company quickly and from anywhere. I also wanted to keep better notes on recruiters (I'm sure you understand why)
https://www.applicationally.com
It's only an initial build, but I'd appreciate all feedback, good or bad!15 -
So I was looking through some old files, looking for some help while I was working on a project and I came across my first codes I wrote in school.
This one time I challenged myself and I tried to write the code a bit.....different. When i ran the code it worked as it should, no problems, then he said:" Show me the code how you did it". I giggled a bit and opened it up. I still remember the expression on his face. He wanted to say something twice but couldn't. Then he just sighed and said, please don't do that again.7 -
Help. I'm drowning in spaghetti code
I've been working at a working student (15 hours/ week) at a local software company for about a month now... and with everything I learned at college I'm kind of getting eye cancer here.
We still use SVN
We don't have any coding guidelines. No checkstyle, no overview over the program. When I started there I was just giving a ticket and they said good luck.
We just have some basic RCPTT Tests inside Eclipse and most of Themen don't work in the trunk because the gui got changed...
At least we have a ticket system but it doesn't get used by most of the working students.
I found 10 other bugs while reproducing and trying to fix 1 bug.
And I've never seen Java raped so badly. Today I saw a line that started with 6 brackets because whoever wrote it wanted to cast like there was no tomorrow. I see more instanceof in one day than in my whole devlife before.
The only thing we have is two normal employees that review our code before we are allowed to commit it into the trunk.
So yeah... I'm drowning in spaghetti-code.2 -
I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...
They've dragging us down.
Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)
I dread working with them and I'm not alone apparently6 -
So I had this internship in highschool for some marketing company creating simple databases for them to help out with their business.
When I came back from college for I think winter break they had asked if I would come in to help with a task that was going to take all day so they wanted me to come early. I agree and show up the next morning.
They had an Excel spreadsheet with about 5000 records in it and one of the fields was the name of the customer. They told me that the records came in as lastName, firstName or as lastName, firstName.
They wanted the field to look like firstName lastName. For a minute or two they had someone show me how they have been doing this which was just by hand. I don't really work with Excel so im not too keen with the macros. But it took me about 1 Google and 30 seconds to find someone with a similar macro to achieve this, I altered it a bit and let it go through all the records.
It was an awesome feeling when I went to the boss to let them know I was done (it had only been 10 mins), they almost didnt believe me.
Funny how one line of code can turn a day's work into a matter of minutes.2 -

I promised myself I wouldnt cry but ... nah I wont.
So I got the job and today was my first day of work, well not precisely work but introduction to the cultuure of the place, signing tons of paper, I probably sold my soul but who cares?, and I met my team, so far everything seems cool, except tthat I will be using windows and wont be able to use any streaming websites or services (yt, spotify, deezer, etc) yes I know, there are ways around it, but come on guys I dont wanna start screwing my first week of work, anyway everything is cool, even the food is tasty there iis only one thing left, my workspace Im an extremely bad decorator so I need ur help, (and yes I know i have to have a duck and a devrant stressball) but apart from that guys and gals, any ideas? A fellow mate I graduated with recently asked me to help him with his interview sample coding questions. Basically he had to write a function to test different conditions using Java. I wrote the function, pushed it to git and asked him to go check it out. He told me afterwards that, my function was wrong..lol, really? (BTW, I tested it and it produced the results the company wanted)
I asked him to send me his code and all he did was write a "main", created an instant variable and passed it in a switch statement. Mind you, the test condition was big that, switch statement was the worse to use...
I told him to do whatever he wants but he should remember that the question wants a damn function given a certain input. Didn't hear from him again...then later asked me to help him with a SQL question...hah, I didn't even bother looking at the question. -
I wanted to play games today. simple mission. i was playing for two hours and somehow i ended up writing a webapp to help me with my taxes based on data from my firefly-iii server 🤔
why can't i sit down and just do nothing for a day 😅8 -
So I got my first computer with all those games, and as I was exploring those games' files I found those HTML-based help files and FAQs for those games, it looked just like the Internet to me with all the links and what not. Especially that I didn't have Internet access at the time. So I wanted to build "my own Internet". Therefore I started hacking on those files by looking into their source code. And that was the very first time I learn to code. Learning HTML.
The video games on that computer were cool tho :33 -
Hey guys, I created this application for Linux users that lets you download and install multiple essential softwares/tools at once. It's something like Ninite (in Windows) but for Linux. So I called it Linite! It's still new, so it doesn't support many distros yet.
Now, I know there are many package managers and stuff, but I just wanted to make something really simple/basic and user friendly that can help even new Linux users. I was learning Python so I just thought it'd be nice to do some project.
Please do check it out and I'd love to get some feedback. Link's below!

It’s really painful how non technical people think all technical stuff is the same.
The amount of times I’ve been brought in to help someone with a printer or WiFi network.
I didn’t do a computer science degree for this.
I’m also pretty sure my last two bosses think fixing the printer is the same as creating large scale systems.
My last boss wanted me to build a Vr chatbot despite spending the last few years building web servers and react/redux apps. I mean I can probably figure it out and it’ll be fun, but don’t think I’m gonna get this done in a week with all my other responsibilities too.
My new boss wants me to singlehandedly build a massive marketplace system that would probably take a team of ten, several years.
Fed up of being around non technical managers who don’t listen to me with my feedback.
Time for a new chapter in the new year.2 -
Around 2 years ago, I had first discovered DevRant.
I was an intern in a startup then, and I was working on ElasticSearch. I remember making rants about it. The internship ended. So did my relationship with ElasticSearch.
This week, a new intern joined our organisation (a different organisation). He was assigned the task of deploying ElasticSearch, with me as his mentor. All was going good, we migrated data from MongoDB to ElasticSearch and all.
Back then, I used to curse the team lead (leading a team of interns mostly), for not helping me properly...
I wanted a publicly accessible dashboard, since we can't really see the Kibana dashboard with SSH :P... So, we implemented user authentication using X-Pack security. And here we are, stuck... Again... I'm unable to help the intern. The World has come to a full circle.
PS: I have to just guide him while doing my own User Stories.

Do you know that feeling when you ask for help in a chat or board and some guy posts a link to the first google result by just googling what you asked?
I mean does that guy think that I can’t use google?
I wouldn’t ask for help if the answer could be found in google in a few seconds.
On the other hand you can’t be mad because he only wanted to help you.7 -
So like a year ago an Microsoft Scammer called me while i was middle in my exams week, so i took half an hour break to talk etc. So i started my VM and let him on it. He started showing me things that aren’t “safe” etc. But i needed to go. So i said: “Call me again tomorrow same time” Well the next day he called. But i really did not have the times for all of this because of my exams so i cut it into a short conversation like this: “Well sir, You made me so afraid yesterday with how many viruses i had, that today i went to the apple store and bought an MacBook and i’ve thrown the other laptop away.” Then he was quiet for like 25 seconds and was started with: “Sir your MacBook has serious problems let me help you!” Then i called him out for being a scammer and he hang up. Just wanted to share 1 of the few stories i have had with such “microsoft” scammers.1

!rant, but some kind of story
I work as a lead dev on a gmod server of a pretty big german community. With the fun stuff, there come the duty‘s to help Jr. Devs or even help people get into Developing. The part, where you help junior devs is always fun, but what I find interesting is the part where you help people learn coding. It’s not easy work, but you learn more every “lesson”. I catch myself exploring and learning something new, even if I know the topic. For me it’s a new journey every time.
Not sure if there are many people who can relate but I just wanted to tell my side on it.1 -
Finally completed filing a claim for my laptop today. Been putting it off for months because it requires a call from a SquareTrade "specialist" to help diagnose your problem before a claim is finalized...
Me: "Hey I've received a box from you guys that was far too small for my [gaming] laptop both times I've sent this in and wanted to be sure I get the right size this time"
Specialist: "Oh, we've made some pretty big changes since you last filed a claim, we now base the size of the box we send you on the model of the device"
Me: .... what were they basing the size on before..? -
fucking zoho and their fucking sign up and authentication process.
they need a mobile phone number for the sing up, alright fine, I provide. but after submitting the form, nothing fucking happened and i am redirected to the initial sign up page. fuck you.
try again and guess what, said my phone number is already used and i can try sign in with it. ok alright, i try to sign in using my number and my password. guess what? i am redirected back at the initital sign up form page. fuckkkkkkkkkk.
i try again with another number. and then this time, guess what? said the fucking email is already existed. jesus fucking fucking christ.
browse around their help desk and found this. https://help.zoho.com/portal/kb/...
sure I follow the advice and guess what? yeah i'm redirected back to the FUCKING GOD DAMN same page again.
I gave up and wanted to send them a reply on their help desk and try to log in using one of my other existing zoho accounts. GUESS WHAT? THEIR HELP DESK LOG IN IS NOT WORKING. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I click "Sign In". Login as User or Login as Agent dropdown appear. I click Login as User since my user account is already logged in. It nothing happened. It flashed and I am back at the help desk thread with no changes. It is still "Sign In" at the top. I fucking give up.3 -
When I was studying computer science at university (second year). There was a girl, I'm not sure if she was crying or angry after this, but I didn't expect that.
Just to put some context, this girl was still asking "what's the meaning of i++?" in second year. And during a re-sit exam, the teacher who was asked the previous question, was the one who monitored the students.
And the girl made a mistake (it was something usual though) . She asked the teacher something that she didn't understand. Which means that she wanted the teacher to help her with the exam, but I'm not even sure that she realised that. And the teacher said : "You still can't do that? I gave you this exact problem during lessons and also at the first exam! Well don't worry... I'll give you the same next year :) "
Not really nice for the girl, but hopefully I didn't hear it directly or I would have laugh a little too much x) -
I can't stop procrastinating from doing what I need to do. This extends to even web development and coding on personal projects, which is something I really enjoy doing.
It's as if I have some sort of underlying fear holding me back each time I get the chance to get things done. Normally I don't have the time and make the excuse for myself that there "is not enough time" but tbh I now literally have an entire week in front of me free, with nobody to distract me. I am actually getting my long-desired time alone. I can finally power through all the things that require intense focus, like coding.
And yet, I can't bring myself to just do it. Instead I make excuses and go play video games instead (Overwatch has been a really bad time sink for me). I haven't been able to do what I wanted to for like a year now. What the fuck is wrong with me?

CSS + Noob + Import html
Hey guys
Need some help here.
Is it possible to include an HTML file inside another HTML file without an iframe? I was using the app Jobr to apply for random positions. It’s like tinder — only you swipe to send your resume.
A week or so later I got an email from a company locally that wanted to set up an interview. I honestly thought it was a scam! I didn’t even remember applying for the job.
Long story short, they’re mostly desktop developers, and I’m the first front end web guy. I was initially hired to help with UI stuff but on the last project I was developing Service Workers. So I guess I just get invested and give my fullest.
Now myself and one of the other programmers are working on the 3rd gen of our software, built with Vue.js and rest APIs.4 -
For a long time, I wanted to be a part of open source communities. I've been a dev for 6 years now.
I have the skills needed to help out but usually I'm fairly unexperienced on working with big teams, code reviews, and build-test systems they often use. So I'm scared as hell to even begin with. I feel unsecure to reach out and ask for helping or send a basic fix / pull-request.
What are your suggestions, how did you start working on open source projects?

I have over one month spare time before joining the company. I have always wanted to learn an instrument but I'm also 'thinking' of joining a gym but I don't have any fantasies for big biceps and I am a big time foodie.
I have read that learning new instruments would help you in critical and out of the box thinking which is a definite plus while programming. While joining a gym would be a good way to keep myself fit in this hectic world of programming.
I'm torn in choosing between these two options. Which one should I join as a developer? What would my fellow devs suggest? 🤔22 -

I work 3 PM to 1 AM as a daily office job. Then go home and try to learn programming. Wake up next day at 8:30 AM for kind of another work until 1PM. Doesn't pay as much but I have to try. Then if I get free time do some freelance on UPWORK with whatever little graphic designing I know to help pay the bills.
And the fact that even my laptop is dying is a huge blow. Don't know when it might give up. Has 1st gen core i5 dual core, takes ages to load Adobe softwares. I have wanted to hulksmash this shit, but can't.
If I'm lucky, I get a stress free 6 hours of sleep a few days a month. And my depression doesn't help. More sleep should ease me a little, but I can't afford to waste any time. But this is life, isn't it.3 -
Feeling so dumb right know.
I have a C# exam tomorrow (on paper) and i can't get my brain to think in code.

The good and bads of Seoul subway system
So the subway here is clean.
Yes. Clean.
1000% cleaner than the one in Paris.
And it is super cool here.
Awesome air conditioning available here.
But, it isnt friendly to foreigners. They cant understand most of the announcement. Why? B'cuz it is mostly in Korean.
So today i experienced some foreigner desperately looking for help.
Our subway needed some quick fox or rest or whatever, so it had to stop and go to the garage(?).
If that happens, all passengers should get off the train.
B'cuz the announcement was in korean only, he was the only one who stayed in the train.
I wanted to go to him and say to come out, but because there was so many people around me, i just beckoned him to come out. He did.
I just felt sorry for no reason.
I mean, just.4 -
Thinking about creating a tech news account on devRant. A little idea that just came to my mind...

So for example when a company acquires another company (IBM > RedHat, Microsoft > GitHub, etc.), a well-known website/app gets new features or a company releases a new smartphone, we will inform you here!
Of course I'd need some help if I wanted to do something like this. Especially from other timezones! (I'm im Austria/Europe)

An intern approached me for help in one of their past exam questions. They said they had already turned in the exam but just wanted to know the answer. The question was not that hard and I had a bit of time to kill so I helped them.
Me: So, to make it O(n), you have to make it a double linked list, and keep a tail.
Them: But the problem requires us to solve it with a single liked list.
Me: You can just iterate it at the end to make it single-linked again. That costs O(n), so the solution is still O(n).
Them: Oh yeah right. I don't think we even need a tail though, we could just have a variable pointing to the last link.
Me: ...which is called a tail.2 -
Hired by large prestigious company to do web development. Understanding at the outset, I was not a web developer, just wanted my foot in the door with the company. 2 days after orientation, I am placed on a $20 million contract expansion with 3 other developers. All new to this contract. So: new language, new technologies, new team, no leadership, no mentorship. 2 months later after a month of asking for help, I'm asked why I'm not delivering solid code by the project exec and moved to the testing team. Testing team lead introduces me to people on the contract and answers questions or tells me vaguely where to loom. Spend last 4 months building a professional fuck you by making myself a yes man to everyone and their mother. Left the contract and have been getting regular hours with them since (including developing for them). New contract loves me and despite the project execs attempt to torpedo me, I have an excellent reputation and am positioned for career advancement already.
I couldn't give him the finger, but I made him regret lettimg me go. Original team lead has since been released for unrelated HR complaint. -

For as long as I can remember I watched my dad at his computer doing work and programming, so I got interested in computers. I started using and mastering computer skills when I was 5 and helped people with their computer problems. I was hesitant to learn how to program because it looked hard, but I eventually have I'm and started to learn Java at 12. I started by making Bukkit plugins for Minecraft (1.7.10). I learned to program, because I knew that computers will one day help people, and I wanted to help people too.2

Ah transports
Minding my own business in a crowded train, listening to full blast music. As the song changes I sort of heard an announcement but didn't get the subject.
Guy in front of me does a 180° and starts talking to me. I thought he wanted some guidance, so I removed my headset and never did I regret more doing that, that guy just went on and on about his life and stuff that I don't care about, until he got off his stop. Ironically, before he left off he said "you know my mama always told me that you should ignore people you're not interested in" (Forest Gump Swiss edition? He didn't have a box of chocolates though)
I was like "yes, fuck off, not interested in your bullshit", but well, noticed he might be sensitive.
After he left some teens just came and pretended I didn't exist as they invaded my corporal space. Pushed one gently as he was leaning on to me a bit too much.
People must see me as a help point, you know those terminals where you can browse stuff... That's me. The Father of them all.2 -
I've been struggling with some financial issues lately. I haven't told this to my family bc I am helping my mom with money, hat wouldn't help.
Sadly, I got two general tickets for WebSummit 2019 and I thought "okay, I am nearby Portugal rn, somebody of my circle could go with me and have some fun, I feel so blue..."
No one. Not a single one. Nobody.
"Maybe with those Telegram groups of JS developers..."
No one.
Maybe it sounds like some fraud or something, so they didn't answer. I even mentioned to an old entrepreneur friend of mine, and he didn't even answer me.
Disheartened is the word for today. I don't know, I am not expecting that people can join this adventure just bc is awesome, we all have bills to pay, but at least an answer would be fine.
I know it is not a fun story, and there are people in worse situations than mine. I just wanted to do some catharsis bc I lost my laptop.
I still have bills, two tickets, and a new kind of miserable mood.
Thank you for reading.2 -

After years of only breaking even or low profitability BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE CHEAPSKATES WHO THINK WHAT I DO IS EASY AND SHOULD BE FREE OR $5 OR WHATEVER AND FRIENDS I DID WORK FOR FOR FREE TOTALLY ABANDONED OUR FRIENDSHIP AFTERWARDS FOR STUPID MISUNDERSTANDINGS ON THEIR PART I closed down my web dev business and now focus only on full time employment. I don’t even do sites for friends anymore.
But did that stop people who before wanted to haggle prices from now BEGGING me to go back into business or to help their referral or to please-pretty-please just help them with one more problem?
Nnnnnnope!
And even now I hate disappointing people and telling them no even though I know they’ll have tiny budgets and will stall and delay and not deliver content or make decisions so I can finish and GET PAID.

(inspired by another rant I read here)
Last semester we were learning Java in the Programming Fundamentals class and a friend of mine asked for help with an assignment.
The objective was to make a virtual store (as a console app) in which the user would be able to select a few products, customize some of them and then the program would print out a receipt, with a list of all products, their prices, and the total cost.
Simple enough I thought, but there was a catch: you were not allowed to use arrays because the teacher hadn't taught that to the class yet. So I was like "how the fuck are you supposed to do this then?". Turns out the way to do it was to just append text to a string in order to generate the receipt. This is stupidly simple, so stupid that it didn't even cross my mind.
It's just that it's an awful way to architecture your code, it's just plain shit. Sure, if you're learning programming that's completely ok, but using that code on production is just completely unfeasible and I think that's why it didn't even cross my mind to do it this way. I'm just constantly worrying about performance and good code architecture and organization that the simplest of all solutions slipped my mind. When I finally discovered the way the teacher wanted us to do it I just wanted to kill myself...3 -

Just wanted to share about what just happened today.
So I graduated with a CS degree 2 years in EU and since then worked in two companies for a year in each of them, where I was paid 18k EUR gross salary in both of my jobs.
Just today I accepted an offer in Sweden for 48K eur/year and they will help be with relocation!
I am extremely happy and starting my new position in 6 weeks. Going to exercise, try to loose some weight and get better clothes, just to look sharp! Also going to sharpen up my skills as well as have 2 weeks holiday before I start.
Morever I will maintain my current job as a contractor where they will pay me 27EUR/hour so every month I will get 50-100 hours of extra work. I just hope that I will be able to balance main job+contractor job+side projects. I know it wont be easy but I wont be in a relationship so it should be manageable!3 -

This February, I posted a !rant here ( https://devrant.com/rants/1999689/... ) about getting a NLP internship with the help of the community.
In the past few months, I have gone up, and now I have a job offer from a small organisation (StrataVAR) as their Python dev.
I received the offer letter today. Since I am in the third year of graduation, then want me to work parallel to the university classes, they pay way above Indian freshers' average, and they have put me in a team that works on things I like.
It would not have been this way without the help and support of the communities I'm a part of, such as DevRant and StackOverflow (obviously). I just wanted to thank all who cared and helped. It means a lot.8 -
I was very young, but my grandma had picked up an old apple 2 with asteroids on a 3.5 in floppy (maybe 1990) and it was really the first time playing games that it occurred to me that I could make them. From then on, I decided that I wanted to work in a space where my imagination was unbound and I could build anything I wanted from the ground up without any help. I've matured a bit since then, but I still find that basic love every now and again when I'm not dealing with red tape or fixing bugs in other people's code.2

Learn to say no...more than anything I just want to help my fellow engineers. Now I am so loaded with so much work that 3 people couldn't poorly do my job. No relief in sight and all I get are unrealistic deadlines and poor criticism when my work is better than anything that was done previously.
Someone tell me why the hell I wanted to do this line of work again?2 -
Just wanted to root my phone again.
My carrier had an update but unrooting did not help to get it installed.
What it did though, was restoring my recovery partition.
So booting my phone in recovery mode, saying twice that I want to reset my phone (just the layer before booting into recovery).
Aaand... It actually erased. 😮
So having little sleep tonight because I need to install all my necessary apps again.3 -
Just wanted to code some better public transportation route calculator (better ux) and found out that the pt company offers an API.
EVERY FUCKING REQUEST HAS TO BE SENT AGAINST THE SAME FUCKING ENDPOINT IN A POST REQUEST WITH THE ORIGINAL REQUEST AS FUCKING XML IN THE FUCKING BODY. At least they offer xsd files... BUT THATS NO FUCKING HELP. At least not that much of a help. AND THE DOCUMENTATION DOES NOT STATE A SINGLE FUCKING EXAMPLE OF HOW TO USE THAT FUCKING ENDPOINT. I FOUND THIS OUT BY SENDING RANDOM REQUESTS TO THE ENDPOINT TRYING TO REVERSE ENGINEER THE EXISTING FUCKING FRONTEND AND NOW I NOTICED THAT 80% OF THE FUCKING DOCUMENTED FEATURES ARE DISABLED BECAUSE: NOT FUCKING SUPPORTED!!!
MAAAN WHY DO YOU DO THIS.
Alternatively I'd use the GTFS files they provide but THEY ARE FUCKING INCOMPLETE AND DONT STICK TO THE EXISTING STANDARD GOOGLE DEFINED... They also offer a different propietary format... BUT THATS FUCKING UNDOCUMENTED AND FUCKING INCOMPLETE... -
Global variables destroyed my day
Of course you can call me a bad programmer and all. When you have the idea, sometimes globals make it seem easy, accessible and "saving resources". They are devils.
The app was connected to a suite of applications. So I ended up silently destroying it neighbors. I committed and pushed the shit. Just when the testers made their weed high smoke tests, a server stopped working.
I got an email that boss wanted the latest version, I reverted the wrong branch, which had code unrelated to its name, pushed shit again and voila.
I went to the bathroom and laughed. I had to take a smoke. I'm still laughing while typing this. The damage is too much and I can't help it. I'll go home, leave this pc on and work remotely through the night. It might be the hysterics speaking now, but I messed up, and I need magic by friday morning.6 -
I don't usually bash on any operating systems, but if I wanted to search for "how to get help in windows 10" on fuckings Bing, I'd do that myself. I'd rather have F1 do something useful.
This was probably MS customer service's idea to make their life easier.2 -
I think something's wrong with me... I just went on StackOverflow and answered questions for roughly 4 hours and it was a blast1

So the other day my car broke down and since the shop wanted a lot of money I asked a friend of mine who knowns his way around cars for help.
Just when we finished repairing it I was like "whenever the Zombie apocalypse starts you'll be really useful, me instead won't be since no one might need computers anymore" . His response was epic:
"Nah, you will simply build a terminator with your computer skills and it will kill all Zombies!"
Now I am actually looming forward to the Zombie apocalypse!
TL;DR: us geeks will build terminators in case of zombies!3 -
So I installed a new Linux distro, and since the DE is Gnome, I wanted to spice things up with a Conky file.
I download my conky theme, extract it, and try to run it.
And it's broken.
Apparently, the Conky development team decided it would be a great idea to switch over to an ENTIRELY FUCKING NEW SYNTAX, LEAVING EVERY CONKY THEME WRITTEN BEFORE AUTUMN THIS YEAR USELESS
Oh, no biggie, I think. After all, the development did very graciously publish a Lua file to convert old conky configs to the new syntax.
Except no.
The file used to convert conky configs uses the old loadstring function, for which support was dropped in Lua 5.4
So not only did Conky make every config written earlier than this Autumn obsolete, the FUCKING TOOL THEY DEVELOPED TO HELP WITH THAT IS ALSO FUCKING BROKEN
Fuck Conky. I wasted 2 hours screwing with this broken-ass piece of shit3 -
Just got intern to “help me” on project. Told him to install nodeJs and run ‘npm install’ inside project folder that he pulled from git.
He ended up running ‘npm install’ inside C:\Program Files (x86)\nodejs
Don’t have slightest clue how he got this idea, ... I just wanted to smash my head through window by that point. Similar shit repeated whole day long.7 -
Why did sonatype just break my maven deploy plugin?? Well finally I was able/forced to migrate to the sonatype deploy plugin.
Finally fully automated CIdeployment to maven central yey.
For the curious, I‘m taking about my hobby (soon to be startup) project https://spot-next.io
Get version 1.011-BETA while it‘s still hot 😆
It‘s An open source SAP hybris alternative on speed 😜😅
Help wanted btw 😅
And excuse the still not complete docs, my two kids + job keep me busy way too much -
I once had a user email the help desk, explaining in a rather twisted and confusing way his issue. He signed the end of it with "shibboleet" (xkcd reference). I called him, because there was no way I'd be able to go over it through email, and for nearly an hour we totally nerded out over it together, working through it. At the end of our conversation, he said he couldn't believe the shibboleet thing was real! I confessed that I was first level and he'd happened to have asked about a thing that was of personal interest and hobby of mine... and catching the reference was the icing, that I wanted to play along.

I refused to get into python pretty long but yesterday it happend. I got the py. :')
Coming from Java/Netbeans I tried installing it again (for personal projects), but since Apache took over and Java 10 got released I never seemed to be able to accomplish a clean IDE install.. I gave up while I wanted to turn a current python programmer to java and, again, Netbeans fckd me over. I tried IntelliJ again afterwards but Netbeans seemingly fcked over the whole JDK installation too, so I gave up for real.
Everyone in my vicinity told me about python and it's coolness. I just.. no.
No {}, no semicolons, indentations are relevant... idk. I did not want to, but some part of me still wanted to try it. I want to work in the infosec branche so it definetly should be one of my interests shouldn't it?
So I tried yesterday, installed PyCharm and in literaly minutes (of course with trusty Stack Overflow behind me) I had a Qt based GUI which functioned as a basic webbrowser. I was intrigued. Well, I took like 100 times that time to get a working .exe out of my .py with all dependencies, but with the help of mentioned python friend I also got this to work. Python is cool now, I guess... ;b -
Does anyone know of any tools for deobfuscating a batch script?
I got one of those scam emails with a .doc file attached and wanted to pull it apart, embedded in that file is a VBA script that runs as soon as the document is open. I have figured out how the script works I just have no idea when it comes to the batch script that its running, any help would be appreciated.
heres a pastebin link with the script, https://pastebin.com/SDWnQc4812 -
Shit.
Shit shit shit.
Accepted to do an "outside-of-work" job, which is about migrating a website from a CMS to another one, and I have extremely badly estimated the time it would take... Now the guy highly expects the website to be fully delivered at the date I told him... Which is in 21 days... I also lost two weeks since he wanted to migrate to Magento, but being inexperienced on it, barely managed to make it run. Managed to convince him to go on Prestashop... Much easier but so much to do, for such a "small" site (6-7 templates)
I think I need to find some help, and quickly :/ :/3 -
it's been a while since my last rant and coming back after so long made me realize how much I missed here.
at some point i realized that the career I wanted and my current situation wouldn't match, I decided to go in real hard, I moved into the dreaded backend development (you can guess, node and mongodb),
I isolated myself from almost everyone and everything, cleared out my mobile games, social media and for almost two months I wanted something stable(might not be job ready but it had to be reasonable). I have come to love backend development so much, the joy of not having anything to do with css.
dad fought me, mum cried, probably thought I was slipping into some deep end, quitting school in my second year of studying food science(still dont know how I accepted that course lol) to start afresh didn't help matters. really hard decisions, made money on some little freelancing gigs, wasnt constant, I needed something stable and that was a job and a degree to get me one.
nothing special, just some regular hustler hoping his passion will pay him, I have always loved what i do but I need something to keep me going.5 -
So a co-worker of mine contacted me for help in her project. I was in no mood to help as I hadn't slept properly the previous day. But she begged me to help, so I obliged just so I could get her off my back and catch some rest after 2 hours, or at least that's what I thought it would be. But here I am, 10 hours later, having just finished helping her in her project, and now I have a really bad headache, just waiting to go to sleep, but my brain is betraying me.
It was a project that uses Tryton framework (based on Python), which I sometimes feel is fucking inconsistent. Things won't work as expected most of the time. Her boss (my ex-boss) is a piece of shit, and he wanted the work by the next day (i.e. today). And nobody else (not even the boss, who would have gotten this work done in less than half the time had he helped her even a little bit) was ready to help, because they all hate her for being a slow learner. All I had to do was get some data in a particular format in a text file using the framework. But the amount of tries it took just to get the data in the text files cost around 2 hours due to shitty internet speeds that caused tons of lag on Anydesk. Then we had to take breaks in between for reasons. But due to my agitated state of mind, I couldn't sleep in those breaks. Then I had to spend time tinkering around with ljust and rjust to get the right amount of padding for the data, which took hours due to shitty internet speeds that caused tons of lag on Anydesk. And then Tryton kept throwing errors in between which took some time to fix. But we finally completed half the task, and I am off to sleep.
As I write, my co-worker is still awake completing the work her boss gave her. It's around 1:46am IST. HER BOSS IS A PIECE OF SHIT.2 -
Hi everyone, I'm a now second year computer science student. I have read through posts on Dev Rant for a while now and have loved every minute of it. I really wanted to start contributing to this awesome community and thought a question might be a good start. There seems to be a ton of inconsistencies among certain terms. The biggest that really grinds my gears is how people refer to "()", "[]", and "{}". I personally refer to the first set as parenthesis, the second as brackets, and the third as braces. Throughout my time at this college and around the internet I have read some people say curly braces, curly brackets, squigly brackets, round brackets, square braces, and my personal favorite "those curvy round things". Other students do this which is understandable, but it seemed strange that even my professors use them interchangeably. So is there a naming convention anywhere that might help with this issue or somewhere I can get some clarification?4
-
I first wanted to be a black hat hacker so I opened cmd.exe and run help to see which commands I could use to make batch programs and then I taught myself the rest of batch. Afterwards, I drifted to DHTML (HTML+CSS+JS) where I made some basic snippets while teaching myself JS3

I am on a forum where we actually help each other out. However, when I see someone post something, and it feels like they are putting in low effort (post practically empty) I don't spend my time getting info from them. I let others in the forum do the "show us your code" or "explain what this means" posts. I also start getting sarcastic. That is not cool in that forum so I refrain from posting.
So today I saw a post where they posted an ambiguous problem. It had to do with scrolling speed of a list in a gui interface. People made the posts like "not enough info", or "it could be...". The person further explained it was not a performance problem, but a "it just scrolls slow". At this point I can tell they have made zero effort to understand the scrolling mechanics of the object they are using. So I left the post and decided to let others deal with this. I so wanted to post a sarcastic remark though. So I am going to share with you:
That is definitely a case of "pixel drag".2 -
TLDR; of my current job:
Deal with shit that nobody wants to deal with, if I manage to make something good out of it, prepare that the credit will be stolen.
At a previous workplace, people wanted me to deal with shit that they wanted to blame me for it, so it’s kind of an improvement. But I wish I could find a normal job where I either do normal work or just have someone that would have my back and just say “idkhow did this” or “let’s bring them to this meeting as they might be able to help with the cool stuff too”.
Also, remember that one of my parents has cancer? I won’t be able to be there for the surgery, due to things out of my control. A lot of things feel out of control lately…1 -
When I was a kid I wanted to be a carpenter like my dad, my parents reaction was always "just keep studying and you can do whatever you want, if you wanna study then do it and don't care about anything else we will help you".
Growing up I became a bit of a geek by hanging out with my uncles (they were the pc gurus in the old days, not anymore hehe). When choosing a college major I knew I wanted it in some kind of engineering, but had no idea besides that, I ended up choosing CS somewhat random and loved the thrill of solving problems so I stuck with it. During it all my parents only really said "as long as you study so you can have what we couldn't give you and do something you like, we will support you!"
I love my parents! 😄
Side note: I think my parents love to be able to brag about my accomplishments, kind of feels like they are entitled to though, since pretty much everything is thanks to them!4 -
I had a small .NET PoC project I wanted to upload to our git server. So added the project to version control using Visual Studio, meaning that VS created a local repository for it. Then I wanted to push it to the remote repository which were created by my colleague. This one was initialized with a commit (.gitignore and Readme.md), so I couldn't push directly. Googled a bit, OK then tried to fetch the remote repo, didn't help. Googled again, tried some "git push origin master whatever" stuff and then rebate, because nothing seemed to help.
OOPS where are my local files? WTF? 😣
Long story short: Experience in other version control systems is not enough or even dangerous when switching over to git. 😂4 -
So this group of students (mostly girls) from university approached us to make them a prototype app for their semester's project, we had a first reunion to know about the idea and what they wanted us to do.
All they talked about was the color and some minor design stuff, we still don't exactly know what we're doing since it was difficult for us to get them to actually define the requirements and what the app should do.
We were supposed to have a second reunion for us to show them some ideas but the day of the meeting they didn't reply any of our messages.
I'm not the kind of guy who gets upset easily, but if you ask us for help and then let us hanging not really knowing what to do with your shitty project, fuck you.2 -
So i started an (8 month) internship in January. Team of 4 (2 senior/mid level devs + boss) plus 6 or so other people in our other office overseas. Everything was going really well IMHO. Boss's feedback for halfway through the internship was good too.
First 4/5 months were great: loved the team, got feedback and help when i needed it, wasn't stuck doing support too much, etc.
This all changed when both the devs moved to our other office. My boss works from home a lot and has frequent meetings, so i hardly see him. I have a 1 hour window first thing in the morning if i need help from the devs overseas. After that im on my own.
If i get stuck, even on something very small that a more senior dev could explain in 2 minutes, I'm stuck either unable to work or figuring it out (wasting hours of time) for the rest of the day.
On top of this, since I'm the only one around in our office, im stuck on support every week which takes hours of my time usually. Last week support ate up most of my week, which put me way behind schedule on my other work. (That was an unusually busy week of support.)
Feeling incredibly frustrated right now, just wanted to get this off my chest.12 -
Last internship : I learned modern opengl, libav and ffmpeg. I even was the only dev on some big contracts. Was a fucking cool internship because I learned everything I wanted to. But my manager had really low social skills. So been able to teach myself all of that was a good thing for everybody, but not for him. When the internship was over I got the worst mark of my promotion for the business with for comment that I didn't enough ask for help Oo wtf dude. Still get the best final markof the promotion and the only one who didn't work on web technologies :p but fuck you should have tell me sooner man...2
-
Swapped workplaces as the previous one wanted to get rid of me, the new one so far feels even worse.
Teammates are too busy to help, codebase makes spaghetti code look like a compliment (and it takes forever to compile) and my manager somehow believes I’m super man, supposed to finish everything faster than speed of light.
I’m miserable.2 -
!rant (kinda)
So I'm currently working on a personal project, where the concept is something, that if I wanted to, I could probably make a decent penny off of it.
The plan is to make it open source, and not charge anything for it, and when I tell this to non-dev people, they're almost shocked! Why would I not take an opportunity to make a lot of money!?
Well basically I think it's awesome to have open-source software, and I really want to "contribute to the society". And only after like 10 minutes, people start understanding my point, to just help people make something new, instead of being a greedy person, and keep it private, making it unavailable for a lot of people.
Hopefully I'm not the only one with this mindset?5 -

Guys I need your help, I'm considering the corporate life, and I have two major options
Option A:
A software factory where I would be working on maintaining existent systems and adding features, but I would learn a lot with their shadow program.
Option B:
An IT department where I would use a lot of different technologies, .Net, Java, ADF, etc, maybe even hardware but I would be paid the fifth than with A.
So what do you think?14 -
I get so irritated when i see people pirate things, i get it, they want it yeah but the fact that someone gets pissed off because i use opensource software, try collaborate and better the software and support by donating some projects. Then they try and convert me to their "copy and paste" mantra. Fuck no.
If only they knew the hours and time given up from their lives, taken away from famillies and social lives developers spend trying to make apps that alfeady makes everyones lives simpler but they dont see that, they are so use to having things given to them they wont realise hoe important it is until it was taken away.
Support the developers because if it was the other way around. Regardless if you wanted it or not, you would like support. We do do this because we love it and with everyones help, we can progress forward together.
I really dont care that i look like as ass to the guy now, i really dont care what takes from it but just venting i guess..1 -
SHORT: BEST 1st WEB DEV LANGUAGE? READ FOR CONTEXT
So my gf became even more of the girl of my dreams last night by confiding to me she wanted to learn web development like actually learn it and do freelance work, this evolved from just wanting to start a blog. (We have a dream of being digital nomads and traveling the world together)
Now I am but a simple innocent C++ dev not trying to start a flame war buuuutttt... What web language would be most beneficial for her to learn as her first main language? And Why?
She's done some simple html is the past (not myspace), she took a web design class in high school years ago. Thank you for all the help! 🖒10 -
I was having internet issues -
I'm running an nongenuine iso of Win7, and installed the driver for my wifi adapter (ralink)
i performed this process three times after it one day stopped working.
i stared directly at my wireless networking button. which wasn't lit.
and then i continued searching for help on my second computer (hp stream, i cry)
and then it fucking hits me
the networking button
wasn't
fucking
lit
so i pressed the button, what you're thinking happened happened, and i both had all the motivation in the world to continue living, but simultaneously wanted to die a thousand deaths becaus I was that fucking STUPID.
have a blessed night,
write code like God's reading it ,and satan's using it.4 -

Pretty excited today! A buddy of mine wants to try getting into linux, he's mostly done Windows IT Helpdesk and some light Windows SysAdmin work but the company he works for is garbage and he wants/needs a change of pace. He's grabbing himself a raspberry pi 4 model B to use as his learning test bed. I'm grabbing one today or tomorrow so I can help him however I can to try and help get him comfortable with Linux so he can try to escape the hellhole that is his workplace. (I used to work there too, so you can trust me when I say it's fucking shite!)
Gonna start slow and easy and have him get comfortable with the terminal and ssh-ing in using keypairs.
Fuck yeah!!! I'm so excited for him.
He's wanted to get into linux for the last year or so but something at work would always happen to make him comfortable with his job again, like fuckface mcgee would finally get fired. And my dude would be like, "Okay, it's not all bad here, I'll stick it out a bit longer." Then they would just teplace fuckface mcgee with dipshit cockmouth and he'd fall back into a depression about working there. They finally put the final nail in the coffin recently and I think he's really motivated to do whatever he can to GTFO of there this time. -
So Today I completed an android app I have been building for like 2 months then this asshole who does education looks at the app and says "This simple thing is what you have been working on for 2 months?".
This is a guy who wanted may help sometimes back on a problem with his phone when I told him to reboot the phone he even couldn't understand what rebooting is.
Such guys usually piss me off very bad. The fool even doesn't know even what coding is.
I really hate such ignorant fools who think creating anything in a computer is a very simple task.
Day ruined by this dude I feel like beating the shit out of him.
Guys who have been in this situation how do you deal with such fools.3 -
Lord help me, I think I might be getting into keyboard modding.
All I really wanted to do was repair the keyboard I've used for the last 10 years. I didn't realize there was a whole hobby surrounding it.6 -
My day couldn't start in a worse day.
We are having a demo this week and I worked yesterday after hours to get the product ready. Tested everything and we were all set for the demo content.
Today we installed the new version with my fixes and nothing worked. Today's version should be the golden version to prep the demo! Obviously everyone starts looking at me as to why nothing works both worried and eager to help. But I got so stressed I just wanted to dig a hole.
Luckily after going through the logs a colleague of mine pieced together something he heard about another colleague on another location we have submitted a fix (without telling our location) that f**ked up the whole system.
Luckily we reverted it since the system was better without it and got it stable again but after all of that I had to go rest because until we found the answer I was starting to think I couldn't get one thing right. I think it was the most stressful moment in 5+ years on this job4 -
Today I got a message from a "friend" of @Alice and me, for a long time. And I was already ranting by myself, because this little fucker is writing maybe two or three times a year, just to have a computer support, like now. He needed help, because a game was crashing everytime at a specific point, and I advised him to reinstall the game, which he can't, because of his slow internet. His answer stated, that he would have only slow internet right now. After this I explained him, that his internet is for around 2.5 years slow. And 2.5 years aren't "right now". I'm still waiting for any reaction.
It's the same fucking guy in Alice's wk post here: https://devrant.com/rants/1564585/...2 -
So I coded minesweeper and because I thought it would be fun, I also coded a multiplayer mode. Then I uploaded the code to github. Since this was an Assignment, I wanted to download the zipped code and send it to my teacher. Imagine my surprise, when Chrome told me: Failed - Virus detected. Same with Firefox and Edge. Wow. I didn't think my code was that bad🙃. I then tried to download the release executables I uploaded, expecting for them to fail the test too, but nope, the . exe and the . jar work fine. Google also didn't say much about it. I found a github issue, that talked about a similar problem with the zipped source code, but wasn't much help. What is going on? Anyone have an idea?9

My best teacher was with me for C++ in high school and in college. He had the most relaxed, laid back style while managing to both make the lessons fun.
Perhaps my favorite lesson was around C++ and Pointers. Lessons generally we mixed with long ramblings about the military and live coding examples. He was talking about object references and Navy ships when he told a student to "give me the USS Wisconsin". Perplexed, my classmate said he wasn't sure he could do that without a lot of help. So this teacher drew an arrow on a piece of paper, showed it to the class and then found the general direction he wanted it to aim for and taped it to a pole next to the stage. He called that a Pointer to a USS Wisconsin and then asked the student to give him the USS Wisconsin again.
I understand pointers today because of that lesson.2 -
Everything startest with HTML. I got an awesome book about HTML/CSS and I just started learning and trying out some stuff. At the beginning I got a lot of help from my father but soon I created my own websites! I setup a free webserver and after some time, I met PHP. I made tons of stuff with PHP :)
After about 1 year of creating things with PHP, I learned Javascript. And with Javascript I got into game development. I created some games but I wanted more. So I tried Unity Engine. But... well... It was hard. Then I tried Godot Engine and I finally found a game engine wich I enjoy!
I created a lot of games.
Then in 2016 I met Lua, wich is my favourite language now! (But I didn't do much with it)
Later I also met Node.js but I'm still learning :)1 -
TL:DR linux newbie, looking for advice/links (skip to bottom for questions)
!rant
After i had been looking for a job for quite some time, a couple of months ago i got hired by "smaller" company doing web stuff. So far it have been a great place, good colleagues, and overall just having a great time!.
They seem to value me alot, so that's great!.
Anyway, yesterday i got called into a meeting - and got told they wanted me to start learning "Server stuff (linux)". That got me quite excited, because it always was something i wanted to learn - but never really got around to doing.
But i never touched a linux installation before, so i'm really on ground zero - but im not afraid, i'm a quick learner and quite efficient at googling :)
I figured i would ask here, since other people here always seems to be happy to help other people out.
So far i have manage to setup a server, install various stuff (php, mysql and so on) and done setup a couple of domains/subdomains on my server. Also got a vestacpinstallation working - so overall im quite happy so far.
I figured maybe somebody had some good links/advice for a linux newbie :).
* Performance/Security, will obviously be a big focus - anything i should look at? - any must look at?
* Monitoring tools, how do i monitor various websites running on my server? Here i'm thinking bandwitch, cpu/ram usage and so on pr site basis.
* Any other stuff i should be looking at?
Little about what the server will/should be running :)
* Centos
* vestacp
* WordPress installations only (e-commerce mainly)
* PHP 7 / MySQL / phpmyadmin5 -
*While designing the native app for a web application*
Me: So this feature in the app will basically be the same as Feature1 in the web app, correct?
Client: That's exactly right.
*Presenting the new app to the client*
Client: Why is this feature not behaving like the Feature2 in the web app?
Me: You said you wanted it like Feature1
Client: What? No, it must behave like Feature2

Was in awe for the democratic potential of the worldwide web, and wanted to help realizing it. I was blind to its corporate potential back then.

Just had the most enraging JS test today.
I didn't know where the teacher wanted us to go with the subject, so I asked him a few questions. He straight up laughed at me and said "I didn't write that test, so I can't you help you".
Turns out he just copy-pasted last year's test, made by another teacher.
Dude, seriously...1 -
Hey everyone, I'm sorry if this is the wrong plqce to do this but I'm trying to start a programming podcast and have a blog with a few hundred daily readers (https://www.runtimerror.com) . In a twist of events, I got myself into a tight paper deadline to help a friend, about a project that I haven't even been a part of.
But, now that the paper is done, hopefully my friend has to go to the conference just to pay for his sins (mostly writing/literature sins), and hopefully I get back into my machine learning adventures!
... I'm super fuckin exhausted tho.
Yesterday I had a panic attack while walking to the grocery shop. Was fun! Always wanted to feel like dying without actually dying! Yay! 🤪 (Wasn't that serious. Don't overreact)3 -
I was logged into an account just now. On the "My Account" page, there was a button that said, "Manage Subscription." I clicked it. Instead of just opening the subscription page, it opened the help page in a new tab showing me how to manage my subscription. No mention anywhere about how to actually get to the subscription page. All I wanted to do was make a payment.1

I wanted to create my own Minecraft Beta 1.4 Mod and failed, this constructor stuff was to complicated for me.
So I went to the University to learn Java and ended up by learning it myself, with a lot of help form other students who are way smarter than I am. -
tl;dr: why is it so hard to build a pc?😒
why is it so damn hard to find the right pc components for developing/image editing/gaming/...?😟
i've been googling around and watched many youtube videos on what components to buy/what to watch out for/tips/problems/etc...
i want to build a decent pc for web, mail, office, developing, running linux as VM (for experiments), edit images, doing most in multitasking (and maybe also play some games) ... basically everything, but i can't wrap my head around what to choose😟
every time when i think (for example) "ok, ryzen 5 2400G, that must be it!' there's always smth negative about it, come on!!🙄😤
i wanted to make an AMD setup for 1000€ max
i feel like as a developer/"kinda it guy" i know what i need, then again i feel dumb as fuck, not knowing what to choose and i'm almost certain i will pick smth wrong😪
do u guys have any suggestions for me/any help?21 -
I need people with Macs (running macOS) to help me make sure this Python script I wrote works. I'll upload it to git{hub, lab} and link to it in the comments.4

Hey everyone, need some help/opinions, I quite literally have almost no time anymore for alot of thing specially try share alot of news here (not the Intel mess, I reported some of that stuff before it exploded) I share most of that news in my site though, but I really wanted to ask people here that may work for hostings companies if they know about the retardation of Nvidia in their change of Terms of Services for their GPU usage (https://legionfront.me/posts/1936 ) and also want to know if users here are if they are looking for dedicated servers, mainly GPU servers for their works and what are you look for (specs and such) or rather where

Can one of you help me?
I wanted to do a minimal Fedora install on my laptop, but the WiFi isn't working. The wifi-card uses the ath10k_PCI driver.
It works perfectly fine in the live-iso and the installer, but not in the minimal installation.3 -
I'm going to ask Chat GPT to first take over the role of our current leaders in the company cause they are not leading, and then I'm going to take our "relationship" to the next step and go through all my education and experience gained on the job with it being my best friend, teacher and mentor.
Guaranteed I will progress 3 x as fast since it's explanations make more sense to me, I don't have to worry about social queues, I grasp complex topics in a fraction of the time and it genuinely improves me as a human as well as my communication abilities also teaching me to be more precise, patient and happy to help instead of seeing it as another slosh of information to ingest after a 13 hour day. I understand the concerns with Ai but honestly I think this is an amazing opportunity to have the mentor, teacher and guide I always wanted! I hope to rise with the machine1 -
In my house I'm the only one who "knows" about tech. My sister and brother, too but they're too lazy to help our mom 😂😂 so I have to help her... The last time was because she wanted to scan a document and she didn't know how. Because we change scanner. So I let everything ready to her and she just had to click on scan document 😂😂 I don't know what she did because when I got home she told me the scanner was a piece of shit 😂 and I had to scan her document

I think it was when I watched Call for Help on TechTV when I realised you can change things on Windows by modifying the Registry. After that I found that I wanted to change more and more things, but the registry would only take me so far.
After a while I got discontented with just changing values and wanted to create something of my own. Then came my first taste of Visual Basic then C, then Python, then HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I don't think anyone had a much fun as I did at 12 years old. -
So my phone is currently in the service center. I am using company test device to get by.
Software tester consultant at work brought home the iPhone test device that I wanted to use. It's been gone for a few days.
One day he returned it to the office and then it's my turn to use it. Peeked at iMessage. Turns out he gave this to his wife/gf/whatever.
A message thread reads:
Gf: Are you hanging out with devs?
Bitch QA: No, would never hang out with people under me.
Bith gf: as should be
I am not under you dick. I'm the project lead, you are under me. it's just that I help devs so I dev too.
I won't let you stay long in this company bitch with the way you think of devs. You are a tester, you work for devs bitch.
I remember that quote, you can judge a man not by how he treats his colleagues but by how he treats those below him.
And bitch I am judging you to be dick. You won't get what you want here, you won't abuse devs.9 -
Did you guys' stubborness get you anywhere? Did it ever help you along the way? Did you ever discover new things because you wanted to do things your own way?

Atlassian needs improvement!
Screenshot from the Jira "Accessibility" settings page where I hoped to find a dark mode switch.
When I wanted to send them feedback about the settings page, the feedback form failed, cluttering vintage style error messages with poor UX writing all over the page.
> Help us improve!
>
> We’d love to hear more about your experience with the new accessibility settings in Jira. Any thoughts on what you liked and where we could improve are more than welcome.
> Oops! Something went wrong...
>
> There was a problem submitting your feedback, likely due to the configuration of this form. You might want to contact the site owner to let them know about this issue.
P.S. Thinking of accessibility: there is not way to enter an ALT text to image uploads on devrant? seriously?6 -
I have been working as a freelancer for a little while now. I recently started using upwork. The first job that I got on upwork was titled: “help me”, the bio explained that it was with node.js. Later, during the interview, the client mentioned that it was 30+ hours a week. I was kind of confused. I had no idea what I was getting into. A little bit down the road, he provided me with the project. This is when I almost wanted to jump off a cliff. The code was organised as if it was a c or c++ app and I couldn’t follow anything. The guy thought that “pass by reference” was a thing in JS. I cried. Granted, with objects, there are some reference exceptions, but generally passed by value. The code is like spaghetti... I still have 2 months left on the contract. It’s awful.5

Hey devs, out of curiosity i wanted to Ask you.. what do you do to unwind ? Any Rituals, activities etc. that help you from not going insane in stressed periods ?22
-
I've been wondering for a while about something...why do so many devs complain sooo much when they have to to stuff not related to their main area of expertise.
I like learning and trying everything if I have the opportunity...backend, fronted, database, dev-ops, crypto, networking, virtualization...I stuck my nose in everything...but I see a lot of people moaning and despairing when they are thrown out of their comfort zone.
Like why...it's interesting... it's not always sunshine and rainbows but knowing something new in IT is never gonna hurt you...who knows maybe someday it's gonna help you get out a tight spot or land that awesome job you wanted.
Ok I'm done 😁11 -
Project Lead(PL): Can you copy your program in LX. I want to check if tables have data or not?
PL: Hi
Me: Hi PL, let me try
PL: Thanks
Me: Program is now in LX
PL: okay let me check
Me: also added the change...< for that bug you found on the not-paid self-initiated program I built>
PL: ok
PL: did you do it in LE or 1E?
PL: I just changed the < system connection settings of> LE to LX
PL: NOPE
PL: it does not show in LE
PL: SYS ID SHOULD BE LE
<at this point I just couldn't understand the need for all caps>
Me: <sends screenshot of program in LX>
PL: <differentiates LX and LE box>
Me: <sends screenshot showing I was asked to put program in LX>
PL: Oh my apologies
PL: I wanted it in LE
PL: so sorry @iamai
Me: yup all caps doesn't help :)
Me: let me put in LE

Any vim/nvim users here? Why do you use it despite having to setup that thingie for hours? People like me who wants to try vim/nvim, the setup process scares the crap out of us. What I want? I just want to be able to do what I can already do in vscode. all I wanted my vim/nvim to be able to debug TypeScript/JavaScript with Nodejs. There's packages like, Vim-vscode shit, that takes help from vscode to debug it using vscode! why not use vscode then?
I'm tired of trying nvim/vim over and over again, and every time, it feels like I'm just a little luckier that before. If it continues, Its gonna take forever to setup. No thank you! I'm going back to vscode. Let me know when there's a gui kinda thing where I can see all the available packages for neovim and its just one click/enter install away. else, consider me sleeping...16 -
I need some help from some experienced people like you..
I'm 23 and since 15 March I've changed job. I moved to an another company (not too far away from the older one) because I needed to move on.
Since I left the older job, my ex-boss told me that he would like to have my help if he needed. I answered him with a: "I need to think about it".
After the last meeting (my last day) my ex-boss asked me some help every week.
I've answered him for some simple request, like: " I need some info on this project e blah blah blah"
Now he asked me to go to my older office to talk about an older project that I made.. I probably know that this time, this request is a big one.
I'd like to stop this circle, because I do not have time and I'd like to stay free of mind.. I know that I shouldn't answer him at the first request but.. This is the situation.
How I can stop him (in a good way) to make me this kind of requests?
These requests are not paid to me, but I don't want to collaborate with him anymore so I don't wanna his (eventually) "extra money".
It's my first experience (I've changed company just once) and this situation is a kind of " break up with my girl".. I do not know how to move.
Can you help me, guys?5 -
Okay so anyone experienced working with networking or VOIP applications are welcome to try to help me figure out a few questions I have.
1.) How do VOIP applications like Discord and Skype not have to require you to port forward before use?
2.) If I wanted to do stuff with sockets over the internet the user of the application would have to configure a static IP Address. but when Im using Discord, or a multiplayer game, or literally anything that requires connecting to people I dont have to configure a static IP for those applications but I do for mine?!?
3.) Is there any additional information I should learn about whilst trying to make my networking application (File Transferring application) work? or any links/PDF's I should check out?
These are kinda just things I haven't found answers to, and I didn't know where to ask.14 -
I finally got to code something yesterday (I've been slacking OTL everytime I open the Java IDE I use my motivation flies out the window) and I've written down some things to help me do what I need because I forget it if I keep it all in my head. Not that this is a big thing, but it's just to help me to not forget what I've learnt, because I know that'll happen if I don't code.
So I'm coding and checking my notes and all, headphones on, heavy metal blasting, I guess I could say I was in the zone.
Suddenly I get a message from my dad asking me to come to the living room. Turns out my mom had been calling me but I couldn't hear it because I had the headphones on... again 😅 (Sorry mom 😇)
So I left my things and walked to the living room. My mom wanted me to put 2 images I've made for her together. I sat on the couch and waited. And waited. I waited more than I've coded before they called me. I was getting impatient because I was trying to code and I'd been called to wait ;u; I thought I could do it in her computer because it was a simple paint thing so I didn't need the editing program I use.
When she finally showed me what she wanted me to do and I noticed that I hadn't edited one the image she provided me correctly (it didn't look good either way, I butchered the logo she'd given me because stray pixels are a thing that exist 😒 reducing the image also kinda killed it 😅). So I come back to my room and edited it again and made it look a bit better, did what she wanted me to do in the first place and emailed it to her. I went back to the living room and checked it it was good and went back.
I lost too much time and the motivation to code. Played for a bit and then forced myself to go back to coding because I didn't feel motivated (not that I don't like coding, I just lack the motivation most of the time). When I realized it it was 2h30 am and I was getting tired 😴2 -
All of my programming knowledge (more like 95% of it) have been gathered by myself. I've started learning during secondary school - the basics everyone has to go through. But it was so awesome that I wanted more. So I've started digging through vast space of internets and books only to find that I know very little. I've had help in the university and high school (the other 5%), but it wasn't enough.
The best thing is - the feeling has never worn off. And I still want more, because it feels like learning magic - the only difference is magic doesn't exist 😃 -
I recently joined DevRants, and with me joining any new site or media where you can share I am usually the guy who is shy and likes to sit back and watch/read. However I wanted to post a question as I am trying to get a job within the Cyber Security field. I have a computer science degree and honestly I feel like I can't even code at a level I should be able to. I am also currently working/studying for my CompTIA Security+. It has been going good but, I always second guess myself and doubt my abilities. I guess this a a slight rant and question so far.
My question is how can I better improve both my skills (coding, linux, and security) and also my mental. I would say its imposter syndrome but I don't have a job so I don't think it would be fair to say it is. I just want to break into the job field and show people that if given the help and resources I can excel at the task given. I do learn fast and pick things up pretty good. Any help/recommendations is much appreciated, and I look forward to more talks.3 -
Apparently, ranting IRL works. I've just been approached to see if I wanted a promotion to help drive CD.2

If I wanted good feedback for my products (especially if they were geared towards developers) I would scrap devRant and do some data analysis on how our products are perceived in raw form. Would be very raw and informative insight indeed because you are at the heart of raging innovation (raging innovation: when a developer is so pissed at a flaw in a piece of software they highlight or fabricate an ingenious feature or solution) and will help not only iron the kinks out but make a better product all together. Also, of course the good aspects would be lauded.

Low performance because of shitty attention span and high procrastination
Don't get higher salary because low performance
With low salary I can't go to a professional to get a medication prescription and couldn't afford medication anyway
I just wanted to have a life and live it, be able to afford to go on dates or just do things, afford a car so I can go anywhere, I had this little online romance where I couldn't afford to go see the girl, she ended up just ghosting me and it fucking destroyed me
To get this low-paying job, I was forced to open a company to work as a contractor in order to circumvent labor laws (common practice in my country, encouraged by shitty labor laws and unstable local currency); I end up having to pay to get paid
To top it all, the government just wants more and more taxes and my pay is worth less and less
My mom wasted all her money and now needs my help
I should just find a way to kill myself1 -
devRant, Ineed your advice / help. This following year I'm going to study in the afternoon again. Since this year I don't have to do an intership, I wanted to start working in the morning. There are some problems though:
I never had a job
I'm still 17 so, even if I can legally work, companies don't like to hire underage people
I'm a punk, so even if I'm a really passionate person and I try to give my best always, I've already had been rejected because how I look (literally)
So, I wanted to know how can I build a professional looking CV and how to show to the requiter my GitHub (and now gitea) accounts, if I should clean my repositories, etc...
I'm basically searching advice on how to get my first job. Skills aren't the issue since I know how to code, manage networks, server infrastructures...
Thanks :D18 -
@all Next year I wanted to start a project, in which a neural network lerns programming out of a plaintext documentation... Eg: when u click on the button, a messagebox says helloworld gets translated into...
Connect (somestuf)
Fucntion
Showmessage (blablabl)
... For this I would need many people who actually help me out by giving thu neural network examples... Who would be interested in helping that project?? Itwould mean, that u first write that docs and then get the compiled file xD7 -
A friend of mine wants to pay me to make a site for her. Freelance work, it's shit but I like money. The problem is I already have school, internship project and another client's project. I wanna make the site for her but I can't because I'm to busy ;-;
So I said to her she could make one on wix. I feel kinda bad because I wanted to help her, she's a good friend. I hope she doesn't think I don't care...8 -
In the time between my 1st and 2nd semesters I had this course to help develop our soft skills. In one of the classes the teacher asks what we wanted to do when we finish our courses and when I said I wanted to make games someone snickered behind me 😒 maybe I was a bit too enthusiastic (I'm super pumped about it, I just wanna be out there and make games and make people happy. It may sound childish but it's what I want to do. After all, I'm still 14 😜 (jk, people look at me and think I'm younger than I really am. I've been even "put" in 5th-8th (12-15) grade once, when I was in xmas vacations from uni, early this year)) but no need to be rude 😒
-
So I was asked to delete the previous posts because my friend didn't like having his name published... even though I pointed out that there are 100s of people with the same name.... his doesn't even show up in the first page of Google results...
But anyways, here's the C# app if anyone want's it. Maybe can help me fix some bugs... but I'm pretty much done I think unless I need another WhatsApp bot for some reason... It does what I wanted it to do and I've had my fun.
Although WhatsApp seems smart... after like 1 hour if the other person doesn't respond, the messages seem to go to nowhere... just see 1 check instead of 2.

So yesterday evening when going to bed I wanted to sleep asap.
Therefore I used a 'tactic' called count to ten and then start over again. This is supposed to be relaxing so you stop thinking about other things an you get sleepy faster.
It usually works...
...But then my brain decided to write a program for said procedure in my mind. I actually started thinking:
int count=0;
While ( ! isAsleep() ){
think(count);
count++;
If( count == 10 ){
count = 0;
}
}
It didn't really help me falling asleep...1 -
Ok, this question is related to mysql and php.,
Let me state the current situation
I have a db, say "gd".
That db has several tables all with same columns.(i.e same fields for different manufacturers such as product name, cost , stock etc.)
Now i want to know how many tables have the product 'a' in them and what's the cost of 'a' in each of those table.(tables are generated dynamically so I'll never now how many tables are there, well ofcourse i can refer information schema, but just wanted to highlight this fact). So is there a way to achieve this?.. excluding "dump the whole data and then search it" solution.
Plz help, .. sorry for my bad English, .9 -
When my brain was overloaded and overwhelmed during rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, my life and my thoughts were a complete mess. Somehow, when I heard or imagined plurals of certain words, like "cans" or "cups", my brain painted pictures of a cute civilization of living soda cans. They fought oppression that came from us humans, but lacked mental capacity to do so. I felt really sorry for them and wanted to help. The more ordinary the word were, the more striking effect it had on me.
The rapid-cycling fashion of bipolar disorder is often triggered by unfit prescription medicines. This kind of disorder is among the most lethal mental disorders there are, with a huge percentage of patients committing suicide.
If you can't make sense of your thoughts, if your emotional responses seem inadequate or too strong, to the point when you can collapse crying after some random thought, stop whatever you're doing and seek help. Ask friends and family to find you a psychiatrist, as by the time you need help, you may lack mental capacity or emotional resource to find a doctor by yourself. To me, even the idea of leaving my bedroom and going somewhere was painful to think about.
If your thoughts appear to be "put into your brain" against your own will, if they make no sense, don't attempt to make sense of them. They are nothing but a random noise produced by overwhelmed synapses. -

I was at school and one of my friends asked me to help with his code. He said that his image wouldn't appear on his website.
I checked his code and it was right, so I checked his images folder.
The image he wanted to put on his HTML document was something like "prev.img". I was a bit confused. A file with a .img extension? He did put his code right, but there was still something wrong. I right clicked the image and went to the properties. The file extension was .jpg.
I eventually corrected his code but I still can't find out how he fooled himself. smh -
Teaming up with a marketing firm looking for a developer. The owner was showing me a couple samples of Craigslist postings that he gets sent every day by a filter he has set up so that I can provide some feedback on what would be a good fit.
Second listing we pull up looks reasonably good at first, then I notice this bit at the bottom:
“Must be available to do design review calls where we’re both on the phone, I tell you what needs to be changed, and you do it on the spot.”
Politely but firmly let my new friend know that that right there was a big red flag saying to move on.
Anyone else have helpful criteria when trolling these kinds of postings? -
Not taking an UI/UX class. I think this would help me be a better front-end developer. And also, not enrolling in a coding boot camp full time like I always wanted to. I learn better in a classroom.

people with fit muscular bodies, was there a time in life when you mainly focused on working out and gaining muscles? like doing it for 4-8 hours everyday and not focusing on work/life/studies?
or did you always kept fitness/workout a small part of your routine, like 1-2 hours everyday during free time?
I want to get fit, and i have started to like working out 1 hour everyday . but haven't started taking supplements or mass cutters or stuff like that. recently one of the trainers gave an offer to give me personal training at additional cost. sounded a little shady deal coz am already paying the gym owner a fees, and he wanted to keep it between us.
He emphasized on how he is going to give me a complete 1 hour time each day, but that's what i already expected from him (which he does not. he just tells me the exercises and rarely see me doing them ).
well, if its just about the time, i am still okay with that. but if he started pushing me to workout more, or do those steroids/supplement stuff, i am just not interested completely.
However i am interested in getting a good body. so maybe this intense workout , if done in limit could help. so just wanted to know that have you ever did intense workout or just gradually gained more strength/mass/muscles?13 -
Oh that’s easy. I was doing this side project for a client and this coworker of mine wanted in. The whole time we were working he would just insult my code while writing almost no code. His boyfriend was supposed to help with the front end, but he didn’t know what he was doing, so I ended up doing his work for him too.
In the end the client screwed us and not paying us the majority of what we were still due. So naturally my shit head coworker demanded that he at least get his full share despite doing nothing but criticizing my code. When I wanted some of the money, he threatened to sue me. What a dick. -
Designer wanted to help me making a certain part of the new layout responsive. After about 1.5 hours of struggling with a CodePen he comes back to me and says: yeah i can’t i would set it up in a totally different way.
Two weeks before that he suggested that i would rebuild it in this exact way. -
TL;DR When talking about caching, is it even worth considering try and br as memory efficient as possible?
Context:
I recently chatted with a developer who wanted to improve a frameworks memory usage. It's a framework creating discord bots, providing hooks to events such as message creation. He compared it too 2 other frameworks, where is ranked last with 240mb memory usage for a bot with around 10.5k users iirc. The best framework memory wise used around 120mb, all running on the same amount of users.
So he set out to reduce the memory consumption of that framework. He alone reduced the memory usage by quite some bit. Then he wanted to try out ttl for the cache or rather cache with expirations times, adding no overhead, besides checking every interval of there are so few records that should be deleted. (Somebody in the chat called that sort of cache a meme. Would be happy , if you coukd also explain why that is so😅).
Afterwards the memory usage droped down to 100mb after a Around 3-5 minutes.
The maintainer of the package won't merge his changes, because sone of them really introduce some stuff that might be troublesome later on, such as modifying the default argument for processes, something along these lines. Haven't looked at these changes.
So I'm asking myself whether it's worth saving that much memory. Because at the end of the day, it's cache. Imo cache can be as big as it wants to be, but should stay within borders and of course return memory of needed. Otherwise there should be no problem.
But maybe I just need other people point of view to consider. The other devs reasoning was simple because "it shouldn't consume that much memory", which doesn't really help, so I'm seeking you guys out😁 -
Hi Hi fellow devs and sysadmins hiding in the dark,
In august of next year I need to do my final internship for my IT Management Study in The Netherlands. My study level is between the US Community College and Associate Degree.
As you can see from the tags I'm looking for a International internship as I'm looking for experience and a challenge but its annoying and pretty hard to find something on the internet due to all of the places that "help you find a place" that ask 4.5 EUR.
So I wanted to ask you guys for help, I'm looking as you can guess for a IT Management internship and I have a slight preference to Asia(With very big preference to Japan) due to interest in the culture.
If you guys know of any places in your company or other places I would love to hear and if you have tips please share them.
Best regard,
Marcel aka inpothet3 -
I got a fuzzy understanding of differences between Platform as a Service (PaaS) , Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).
I wanted you guy to clarify it for me. For me
IaaS = You choose how much RAM , CPU , Storage you wanted and the provider create the OS for you by virtualization technology and you can do whatever you want on that OS
PaaS = The provider said here is a services (database , docker ,---etc) we offer to help you develop your own software. You use the service we offer and we charge you by how much you use our service.
SaaS = The provider said here is the complete software. You can just use the software and we charge you how many request you send or how many data you store,--etc.
Is the differences between IaaS and dedicated server is that in IaaS you may share the server with other client by virtualization and dedicated server give you the whole server?13 -

How do I create a simple store for state management. I don't want to use redux. I achieved most of things I wanted I'm kinda stuck at something. Here say the store
obj = { attr1 : { some : { nested : ["json"] } } }
I used setter in es6 to avoid writing to attr1 after attr1 is set.
My dilemma here is how do I freeze the nested object being changed? I tried various ways arround Object.freeze. it didn't work. I'm looking for some way I can do it? Or someone can help me understand redux or vuex without going through all of their code. -
My client recently asked for help with a product idea he has. He already got his lead developer to hack a proof of concept together.
My client knows I have more time and would start progressing the whole project. He says that he is fed up of all of these huge plans for some huge product...
I said ok, let's start getting the next few features on and using the product with the team.
He then said he wanted a big plan for the whole thing... so I said the whole point was to just get on with it and see how we get on as there are so many unknowns.
Somehow, due to a lack of other work, I have decided to help make a proposal that is far too long for this project. Would have just been better to get on for a few days and make a MVP of the product that works.
Instead I am waiting to see if this latest proposal will actually land me this work...

Working for a little SharePoint-Company while studying.
Have to hunt bugs.
Found a major bug which kills one of our customers SharePoint-Site completely because of code pasta.
Told my supervisor about the bug and reported it.
"yeh. we will fix it now"
2h later they started to go live.
"Did you fix the bug?"
"No. Wanted to have the system live asap."
On my way home I got a call.
"We need you back here in the office"
"Why?"
"It crashed. Is not reachable anymore. Help fixing it"

Hello fellow ranters!
So I just switched companies ( free from hell...rants if wanted) and now I'm facing a ton of new things I never worked with. Honestly I'm a little bit scared and thus I want to prepare a bit for the new stuff ahead of me. ( I'm a junior developer with only 4 years professional experience )
What are good resources to get some knowledge in the following topics, so I wont look stupid on my first day at the new company?
Docker
Microservice
DevOps ( CI/CD, Kubernetes )
I know some basic stuff to describe what these words mean but no work experience at all for these. My old work was purely monolithic Java EE 😅
Resources should be in English or German.
Thanks for every help!! 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️6 -
Hey Guys,
This is not a rant but more of an advice post. I'm studying Economics and computer engineering in Germany, but our programming course is really bad. I wanted to ask some of the experienced devs if there is a good website or a good book where I could learn Java?
Hope you guys can help me3 -
I'm working as a cnc operator. I've ask for some txt files, cos I wanted to write a small help to the job management. He said it's ok, but he can't gove me the files, cos there is some problem with the system, he'll have to call the IT department. When he clicked to the file, notepad popped up instead of wordpad and it messed up the outlook of the text. So when I've changed the default applicaton to all txt files to wordpad, he looked at me like I would be Mr. Robot...

Me and my friends decided to start a film company, much like roosterteeth. Throughout high school we had a talented group, actors, musicians, writers etc and those of us behind the scenes editing and shooting footage, graphic design and web development. My best friends passion is film, he's a good director and editor and wanted to start this company and was blessed enough to have a group of friends with all of these talents.
Naturally I was the teams web developer/designer.
Well this morning he texts me saying he's sending an old friend of ours my way to help on the website. My first thought is "why?". I code alone, I've never made a website as a team, that just seems like a mess.
Well the friend of ours texts me shortly after saying he was LEARNING to code and wanted to know if he could be in the dev team. I am the dev team. It's not a group to be joined. I don't want my first team experience to be one where I'll have to be teaching along the way, bc I may as well do it alone at that point. I haven't responded to either person yet as I was waiting to share with devRant 😂3 -
Hi, so currently in my Java course, I'm learning about abstract classes. I noticed how a method in an abstract class can use an access modifier, however, interfaces don't use them.
In addition to this, I noticed that IntelliJ didn't give me an error stating that adding an access modifier was redundant or useless. So I wanted to know if there is a point in adding access modifiers to abstract methods.
Thanks so much for anyone who can help me out with this!1 -
So my friends started a group where we would discuss programming problems. Since I've solved quite a few they wanted me to help them out. And I sent them a problem from Euler's. Immediately after 2-3 minutes I get a link in the group which is the solution to that problem.
I replied "thanks I didn't know the solutions to popular problems were on Google"
He could've learnt in Google itself then 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑 -
Not that i am just in this for the money but how do i start making money from what i know? I'm sick of my car wash job, they hired me because i wanted to help them get there website to a better standard but that's not what they'ed had me doing. Now i just work at this dumb car wash.
Please, how do i sustain a income from this thing that i really love to do?1 -
just wanted some help from you people..
if anyone knows some sort of Code Snippet Manager or Gists Manager.
I want to store my code snippets (public and private) with the following abilities:
1. Search the snippets
2. Tag the snippets
3. Code highlighting
4. Cloud Stored Snippets
5. Is free
I've found Cacher and Lepton but Cacher allows only Public snippets in the free version and Lepton lags search ability.
Anyone know a better client for this purpose?8 -
Unit testing with NSubstitute and Autofac
For the most part, I find it a lot simpler than SimpleInject (hmm) and Moq, which I have used previously.
But there are still some of those 'Oh, for fucks sake!'-gotchas.
I was trying to test a class today where I wanted to substitute all other methods in the class than the one I wanted to test == an actual unit test.
I had previously found out how to do this:
1. Make sure the methods that should be substituted are internal to allow substitution.
2. Substitute class with Substitute.ForPartsOf<T>(args)
3. Set up methods that should not be called with instance. When(a => a.Method()).DoNotCallBase()
This way, you can unit test a class properly and only call the method that you want to test, and also control the return values of the other methods if needed.
So as I said, I have used this before to great effect. But today I just could NOT get it to work! I checked and rechecked everything but the test code kept calling the implementations of the substituted methods!
I even called over another dev for help, but he couldn't see the problem either.
Aargh!
I scoured the internet, but everyone just told me what I already knew: follow the 3 steps, and all is well. Not so!
I ALMOST considered doing the test improperly, as in, increasing the scope beyond that of the method I wanted to test.
But then it hit me... My project was missing this line in AssemblyInfo.cs:
[assembly: InternalsVisibleTo("DynamicProxyGenAssembly2")]
I always add a line to make internals visible to the test project, but I had forgotten that NSubstitute needs this line as well to work properly.
Sometimes when a test fails it will tell you that you are missing this line. And sometimes it just doesn't work.
Maybe I will remember this in the future now. Maybe 😅 -
I didn't get into GSoC while writing code which was to be a major aspect of the next release of SymPy. I tell you this org. is maintained by 1 maintainer and 4-5 other members. While most don't understand the code written but will teach you to write some decorator class. I don't want to name that sucker, but he made some changes and then other reviewed and told to change back to what I had originally done. I wanted to cut his throat while I had to made him understand the code. After some 10 days, when I asked that it is ready to be merged,he says "I don't understand this part of code". Fucking bastard if you didn't understand, then why the fuck were you reviewing mine? The people who just did beginner changes but were from October got selected. This org. doesn't check your ability to resolve issues and understand code, but basically wants more number of commits, whether the commit may be mere change in documentation or so, doesn't matter. Again, these people want to help and reviewed my pr,but there should a valid argument. They meaninglessly just wanted to add their name to reviewers for making their proposal strong without helping or say by just showing off. I wrote unit tests, doctests, wrote a full-fledged function, resolved many PRs,and was working alone on one pr which was for the main release of SymPy,but I didn't get selected. Why? Because I started contributing in March. When will these guys understand what matters is how much you contribute not when you start to contribute. The substance and difficulty level of PRs should be considered not just no. of PRs. Hope this org. becomes more beginner friendly and open to more clear discussions rather than showing off.

Not a horror. I'm rewriting services.
It started as a help request. I was asked to help with completing a service dealing with push notifications which was a research prototype. It was suggested to keep core part of it, but it was so awful that I just removed all files and wrote the service from scratch.
The second service had been developed for more than a year by a junior and then by our manager who wanted to complete it as fast as possible, without taking care of code quality. Then I was asked to take over the project and after some time I agreed with one condition: I'll have 1 month on takeover. But when I looked at the code, it became clear that it's much faster and better to rewrite everything except API and database than to takeover existing code.
The third service dealing with file exchange was working, but the junior who wrote it advised to rewrite it because it was a very simple service. So, I initiated rewriting, designed a new API and reviewed the final result.
And now I'm dealing with the fourth one. It was developed in my team but not under control. Now, when I "inherited" this complicated project, I decided to rewrite it because it should be simple, but it doesn't. It features reflection, layers inside layers, strange namespaces, strange solution structure. And that's after months of refactorings and improvements. So, wish me luck because I want to keep part of the infrastructure, but I don't know if it's possible. -
Anyone here willing to validate my development tool idea by filing in 5 yes/no questions?

My first year of a 2 year course our teacher had only taught us 2 theory topics of 6 and hadn't begun to teach us the other 2/3 of the course which was programming. The only reason he took so long was because he wanted everyone to understand the topic before he moved on which meant waiting for the people who shouldn't of been allowed to take the subject because they never paid attention and showed no interest in the subject. But he refused to move on without them.
To drag those 2 topics out more one of them was algorithms. At the time he had sprained his wrist shadow boxing and instead of preparing them before hand to give us some help he would type them out while we sat and watched wasting half the lesson. Then a month or so into our second year he left leaving the other teachers to make up for everything he failed to cover with us. -
Okay so i did an internship in Laravel for 6 months. I started there and i had zero experience with it. Later, i started to learn more about it and i realized their Laravel version was at 5.8 and their bootstrap was at 3.4. It annoyed me so much but i wasn't allowed to update it to a better version.
What happened is, i installed Linux on my laptop and had to install some things. I accidentally did composer update and updated the whole thing. I updated it to Laravel 7.4 and i thought, well, that's good right, it will not effect the whole project right? No it wasn't right. I got Teams messages from my colleagues. They normally don't really respond to me, ignoring me but this time, they responded quickly. It was wrong what i've done because the code on the server wasn't working anymore and it was pretty bad they said. So i had to get the last version in Gitlab and i should not do composer update again.
Also, i was annoyed because i couldn't use so many font awesome icons. They all didn't work! I had to make this dropdown menu with an arrow down but even that didn't work, so i used a transparent image to do it because that was my only option to have a good arrow. I wanted to update that as well but nope, not allowed.
Oh yes, i'm not done yet.
They have put so much CSS on the project, that i couldn't even use bootstrap columns. I struggled with that and seriously, no help. The pages were styled really weird and it was dramatic.
When i asked for help, for some PHP code for example, no one responded for days and i was angry about that. Later at the end of my internship, they told me I wasn't the one who was responding and that i should have asked for help and i had to start the conversation. They really just said that? Yes, they did and i'm not happy about that. It costed me some points on my end essay, because they haven't been doing their best.
I wanted to learn more about PHP, but ended up doing all the frontend. I like it, but it's not what i originally wanted to do. So basically, i learned stuff in frontend but almost nothing in backend. It saddens me and hope to get a better internship next schoolyear.
I really had to rant about this, oops.1 -
Hi Everyone,
I am working as a jr front end developer and wanted to study more about performance profiling in Chrome and finding memory leaks using Dev tools. I searched online for a while and not able to find a nice place to start with, can anyone help me out with a resource from where I can start the debugging performance using Chrome Dev tools.
It would be very helpful. -
Working along side another consultant house for a client, we have our shit ready weeks ago for integration testing (as was the deadline) against the other guys. We tell them we are ready, but we need them to be ready too, there are some tricky format things and we basically let them spec it out since they integrate further down the line.
They come _NOW_ way over deadline with change requests in message formats, like MOTHERFUCKER, IM ON MY WEEKEND NOW. We KNEW the client wanted it ready next week, thats why we were ready in time. You are not gonna cost me my weekend.
(is what i wanted to say, the devs on the other team are super nice and just absolutely overloaded with work which i cannot help them with)
One thing is certain, tonight my internet access mysteriously dissappears and wont open until monday morning. Such a shame -
Long Story short. I'm developing a Web Platform for my company to share documents with our partners.
So this was way back in 2016. The site is finished for almost two years now. But the department's who wanted this in the first place didn't gave me permission to deploy until like two months ago. Now the site is running online. Yay.
Well guess what. The department responsible for the creation of sad documents, now wants a full blown configuration web site. Best part. Can it be like Free Commander? Yeah right I'm gonna build this on a website. The fuck is wrong. It was just a simple table with some helpful info to help them track their files.2 -

I'll try to make this short:D
I'm a CS student atm. at 3 sem.
And I just wanted to ask you guys, how did you improve back when you started developing?
The assignments we get at school never really challenge me, so I've spent a lot of time doing "programming ideas"(from sub reddits and ideabag2) on the side.
But I feel like I've hit a brick wall, as in, I don't think I learn super much from them anymore.
Which is why I've tried to "help" others, but when I go onto stack overflow or try to help on open source projects, I understand nothing and I'm definitely not able to help with anything. (They're all about things/subjects I've never heard of before)
So my question is mostly, how did you guys get from where I am today, to where you are today?
Thanks for even reading this.

Our company (non tech) made Python available to install on company PCs sometime last year. Great! Only vanilla Python. Not so great. I opened a ticket to ask for the possibility to install additional packages, or if thats too much to ask, if they at least make some packages available (code review and somesuch was mentioned). Today (!), after several responsibility transfers, I finally had a conference call with someone in the company who
A) wanted to help me
B) was authorized to help me and
C) actually knew wtf I even wanted from them.
And after a goddamn hour of command line shenanigans and stackoverflow visits on both sides, I FINALLY have access to pipy.org and can download and install to my hearts content. However it was so long ago that I made that request that I kinda forgot what I wanted to actually DO with those packages...3 -
Hey guys,
Excuse me for my bad english in advance. I am not a native speaker.
I wanted to ask if someone has experience with humanoid robots.
I am currently searching for a master thesis in IT and have stumbled upon one offer at which you are supposed to realize a humanoid robot. At the end the robot is supposed to be able to bring coffee to people. To come to the point. On the one hand I have always wanted to do something like that and I think it would be a lot of fun. On the other hand I fear that the project might be too difficult. In the offer it is said that you should assemble the robot yourself. I have a little bit experience with arduino but in general probably not very much electrical knowledge, only knowing the base principles. The time limit would be 6 months, which in my opinion might be very little time.
So my actual question is: Do you think that such a project is realizable with some help of the engineers within 6 months or something compareable? I fear that that the task itself would be a handful in this time span with a fully assembled robot.3 -
2nd week at my first job after I got my papers and what am I doing?
Background:
I followed a course of three years where all we learnt was web development with php and javascript. I of course wanted more and spend hours after school learning as much as a could without any help from others.
About the course:
We learn to tinker with code (php, javascript).
There was never a mention of design patterns.
We never got to know about TDD (test driven development).
Now:
Got the papers, found a job as a c# junior development and am currently working on a C# .NET web app using azure cloud and high standards using unit tests to provide a product for the awesome company I work at which should generate a stable income.
Tldr;
Hard work pays off. -
So today I wanted to keep going in my project, did nothing in the morning had to do market and came back tired (didn't sleep enought last night) so tried to rest (couldn't because had to help in the kitchen with the lunch), had lunch then take a nap, nap evolved to a nice sleep, woke up @1600, got out to deliver a ddr3, came back @1700, wife asked to get burguers for dinner... went to buy dinner, watched a movie (gold) has sex... and now I'm writing this rant'... so coded nothing... now I'm playing bf4 just because fuck it I'm not sitting in my desktop now....
So have you ever wanted to do something in your project and couldn't because external reasons didn't allow you?5 -

Hi.
I wanted to ask this and didn't know where else to ask. How can programmers help the ukrainians, in other ways than donations? I'm specifically looking for programming projects to be implemented, that could in any way help these people.
I currently don't have the circumstances to help with monetary donations, but I want to help them somehow. Do you have any ideas?
Perhaps other people with extra time, like me, could also take some ideas from here and implement them.5 -
FML so I have recently learned I am mandated (nodoby asked me if I wanted to do it, management just assumed I would) to help and train an offshore SQA team with 10 hours of jet lag to automate their tests on physical hardware because everything they do is manual and their environment is all mocked including hardware... there is barely any doc on how they test their shit or on what they even do. I need them to show me their shit work on goddamn zoom. And then once I manage to do this by some fucking miracle, I need to show them how to take over my already automated project.
Dudes cannot even code, how the fuck am I supposed to do this? Worse is I was told I can't impose our tested infrastructure and libs on them because "we have to give them flexibility" or some bullshit.
Fucking pay cheaply 5 people offshore to get fuck all done and then put the weight on my shoulders when you are surprised it does not work? You bunch of management fucks, eh?
Lucky I am getting some shiny offers elsewhere.3 -
So my coworker asked for help with his work. I understand that sometimes talking about the problem with someone else will help solve the problem, but seriously, don't ask me "How do I fix this?". If you wanted me to help you fix something, go to lunch and let me work on it for a couple of hours. I can't fix something by telling you what to do. I need time to look into the problem myself, do research, and run tests on my own. Telling to do that over your shoulder is a complete waste of our time.
Also, his attitude of complete helplessness is tiring. It's hard to help someone who continually reminds you of how much he just wants to give up.2 -

A long time ago I got an idea for an Internet concierge shopping service that would pair you up with a human to help you comparison shop anything. Obviously this was before AI or the kind of tech we’re used to now. The idea was that the help of a real live person to help you track down deals was better than some of the emerging product recommendation engines I was researching. I figured I’d at least make a short term business out of it until tech caught up. So I built the site, DB, and business logic and recruited my bargain-hunting wife to help people find good buys. It worked ok, but wasn’t easy to monetize because people wanted her help for free rather than pay any kind of fee. Their perception was they weren’t saving a substantial amount if they had to pay someone to help them. Of course, our pitch was that by paying someone to help them, they might avoid paying more by trying it on their own.
It was an interesting experiment anyways.1 -

Hello everyone,
I wanted to share with you a useful resource. There are many frameworks that help to create responsive and flexible web apps.
According to me, Bootstrap 5 is the best framework as it offers many features such as experimental support for CSS Grid and offcanvas in the navbar. Also, a new placeholders component, horizontal collapse support, and many more.
As we all know, it is an open-source framework that offers responsive structure and styles for building new projects and websites.
Here, in Today's rant, I am sharing some useful Bootstrap Practice projects that will help you to learn and sharpen your skills as a developer.

You can check the above blog for more detailed info.

Anyone one here played around with CouchDB before or use it for personal projects or work?
At face value, it seems like a pretty good DB, Just wanted to get some idea from people that have used it before if it is actually pretty good.
I'm not a dba and don't know the caveats of DB tuning or management. So I'm in need of a DB with simplicity and easy management in mind Hahaha.
I'm mostly working with data that is either in JSON or hashtable/dictionary format so it felt like a NoSQL DB would be easy-ish to save my data into, plus I don't think (I hope my guess is right here) that I need regular SQL type relations with the data I'm working with.
Please help me with my noob-iness!Thank you! 😄 -
I know this is not a rant, so maybe I'm a *bit* off topic, but I need some help. I'm about to get a new laptop. I'm on my final year of uni and I think I'll focus on machine learning from now on. I'm between buying a Lenovo laptop (IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6) and running ubuntu on it, or a 2019 MacBook Pro. The specs on the lenovo are better, I know, but I always kinda wanted a mac and now I'm torn between doing what's best and what will please my long time macbook desire. Any opinions? Thank you in advance!5

Hello, I am software engineer student and I am still learning but I would like to start a project to help a friend. The idea is to create a simple DB to manage stock of products, generate a few barcodes and have a few other simple things... btw the program needs to run on a small usb drive... yeah no server or anything.... but has do be like this for now. I was thinking about creating a QT interface for him to interact with the DB (sqlite3, is for a small shop), and for the extra functionalities. However I remembered of you guys and would like to ask for advice :) (I know there are free solutions for his needs, but I wanted to take the opportunity to learn more C++ and improve myself as a developer)4 -
Need to ask you all something. Probably a crazy question lol. But I wanna get into Networking. . Plan on taking Network Plus in less than 2 months. Got an interview tomorrow for NOC engineer position . But I currently work in Help Desk Tier 1. Second Shift. This NOC is first shift..... now here's the kicker. I need a second job. Either another full or part. I have 6 years experience at Refrigeration Tech. Which I wanted to leave for IT. I have also a trial day for a Refrigeration company tomorrow as well. First Shift hours as well. So I'm like.... well damn. Do I not go to that job and just hope I get this NOC position . Because Networking is right with where I see myself being1

Hey devRant community, I’d really like some suggestions/advice for something I’m going through.
I’ve always wanted to go abroad to work/travel and experience new things and I feel that I can do all of that by pursuing masters but I am not fully sure about the specific area in CS which I’d like to study more, I do have an interest in A.I but I’d like to explore other things as well. I like Software engineering and would love to do some internships and probably a job before applying for masters but college ends in 6 months and I’m still not sure about this. I also want to get better at Software Engineering interviews as I’m avg when it comes to data structures and algorithms. Any help here will be appreciated. -

Hi there! So I am one of these guys who started learning coding, applied for a couple of jobs and didn`t succeed in it, almost a year doing nothing, but I am kinda happy with it. Wanna jump again on coding, thinking about to start learning python, started from scraping (web scraping, reading blogs&articles from big websites like https://www.dataquest.io/ https://www.scrapingbee.com/ https://finddatalab.com/ they help me a lot, and of course youtube is even better I think cause of visualisation. Wanted to ask - what people/articles/blogs you read/listen/view ? Can you give a short characteristics for some famous influencers in this area, like who can give better explanation of exact therms etc. ? I`d bery thankful!

Our government's "information and technology institution" ran a ctf yesterday. Their website was a whole template. And like 1 hour before ctf website approximately got 400-500k request and they've hit by a ddos. During the competition individual competitors couldn't log in their accounts due to "wrong password" and also password reset mails not sent.
One of the rules of the competition was that the questions were not leaked out during the contest. But some groups and individuals wanted help for questions on some hack forums. CTF is over and seems like script kiddies gonna win.

Hi, so currently I am developing a program in Java that requires a few enums (I'm new to them and so far they are pretty awesome) and currently I want to create an enum that requires a single field, an instance of another enum. So in the first enum's constructor, I'm setting all the parameters into a new instance of the second enum, however, I'm getting "Enum1 has private access in Enum2!".
I'm off for the day but rq I just wanted to ask if anyone could help me with this. I'll be back in a few hours!1 -
As part of mentoring folks was having a round table. All wanted tech help. lists of things to do, learning syllabus, techs to bet on, projects, promotion mantras etc etc.
I asked them how's the work. All started rating about overload and overworked. How difficult it is to find time to do anything else. It became noisy.
So asked how they will find time to do all the above without time. Do they really need mentoring on time management and prioritisation ?

HI all.
I'm a novice in Web Development and I've made simple Web App I've just publish on Github. I just wanted to play a little to learn API manipulation and JavaScript's Fetch. So I decided to build an app based on Discogs' API for my personal use.
ShuffleBum is an app, which after providing a username in the dedicated field, retrieves all items of user's collection then randomize one of them before displaying it. That's help me to find my next listening records (I have 400+ vinyls in my collection and I always listenning too many time the same records ^^).
Because of Discogs' API construction, I must perform two fetch to retrieve all the items (Items are stacked at 50 per page). So, for my collection, there is 10 pages with 50 items. So, I used a foreach and a fetch to scan items and store them into an array.
But, this is really slow (800ms for each request), so for 10 pages, that's a lot. But I can't see how to improve those request. I can't do otherwise. Well, I guess.

Calling QA/ Test managers for help !
Im a junior dev at a company where im slowly transitioning into also being our test lead. I just got my ISTQB foundation and im starting to write out the test strategy for our company.
Currently we’r doing alot of reactice testing, and to implement more proactive testing i wanted to implement a risk strategy as well.
Problem is that i feel this strategy takes too much time for our organization (doing risk analysis for each story we’r implementing just isnt possivle) , and we don’t have time for me actinh as a full time Test manager while also doing software dev tasks.
Question is: what good proactive strategies can we implement that doesnt require too much time investment - or could we use risk strategy only for specific stories implemented / custom orders / etc and stick with a reactive strategy solely ?
Later this yesr ill be sent on ISTQB test manager course to better qualify my position but until then id really want to get a test strategy somewhat implemented
Any help is MUCH appriciated!10 -

We have a pre interview video chat with Y Combinator, in response to our application. Just wanted to know if someone has gone through this and what to expect. Would appreciate any help. Thanks! -
So I've been working on a python package for quite sometime. It is a package that allows for multithreaded/multiprocessed downloads and various control commands as well. It is not complete but can be used successfully in scripts barring some exceptions.
I was hoping that the kind people here at devrant would help me better the package and contribute towards it as well. It is also a great opportunity for newbies as well to learn and develop new insight about the package.
