Watching the Dutch government trying to get through the public procurement process for a "corona app" is equal parts hilarious and terrifying.
7 large IT firms screaming that they're going to make the perfect app.
Presentations with happy guitar strumming advertisement videos about how everyone will feel healthy, picnicking on green sunny meadows with laughing families, if only their app is installed on every citizen's phone.
Luckily, also plenty of security and privacy experts completely body-bagging these firms.
"It will connect people to fight this disease together" -- "BUT HOW" -- "The magic of Bluetooth. And maybe... machine learning. Oh! And blockchain!" -- "BUT HOW" -- "Shut up give us money, we promise, our app is going to cure the planet"
You got salesmen, promising their app will be ready in 2 weeks, although they can't even show any screenshots yet.
You got politicians mispronouncing technical terminology, trying hard to look as informed as possible.
You got TV presenters polling population support for "The App" by interviewing the most digitally oblivious people.
One of the app development firms (using some blockchain-based crap) promised transparency about their source code for auditing.... so they committed their source, including a backup file from one of their other apps, containing 200 emails/passwords to Github.
It's kind of entertaining... in the same way as a surgery documentary about the removal of glass shards from a sexually adventurous guy's butthole.
Imma keep watching out of morbid fascination.... from a very safe distance, far away from the blood and shit that's splattering against the walls.
And my phone -- keep your filthy infected bytes away from my sweet baby.
I'll stick with social distancing, regular hand washing, working from home and limited supermarket trips, thank you very much.26 -
Yesterday Gitlab had severe issues.
Somehow their database replication had split and ALL of the traffic went over one server.
I absolutely love how transparent they were about this issue and that they shared what exactly they were doing.9 -
PineScript is absolute garbage.
It's TradingView's scripting language. It works, but it's worse than any language I have ever seen for shoddy parsing. Its naming conventions are pretty terrible, too:
transparency? no, "transp"
sum? no, cum. seriously. cum(array) is its "cumulative sum."
There are other terrible names, but the parser is what really pisses me off.
1) If you break up a long line for readability (e.g. a chained ternary), each fragment needs to be indented by more than its parent... but never by a multiple of 4 spaces because then it isn't a fragment anymore, but its own statement.
2) line fragments also cannot end in comments because comments are considered to be separate lines.
3) Lambdas can only be global. They're just fancy function declarations. Someone really liked the "blah(x,y,z) =>" syntax
4) blocks to `if`s must be on separate lines, meaning `if (x) y:=z` is illegal. And no, there are no curly braces, only whitespace.
There are plenty more, but the one that really got me furious is:
98) You cannot call `plot()`, `plotshape()`, etc. if they're indented! So if you're using non-trivial logic to optionally plot things like indicators, fuck you.
Whoever wrote this language and/or parser needs to commit seppuku.rant or python? pinescript or fucking euphoria? or ruby? why can't they just use lua? or javascript? tradingview16 -
The exact moment when I understood what programming actually was.
I was getting hard times at my 3rd college grade, trying to implement the recursive sudoku solver in python. Teacher spent a lot of time trying to explain me things like referential transparency, recursion and returning the new value instead of modifying the old one and everything related. I just couldn't get it.
I was one of the least productive students, i couldn't even understand merge sort.
I was struggling with for loops and indexes, and then suddenly something clicked in my head, like someone flipped a switch, and i understood everything i was explained, all at once. It was like enlightenment, like pure magic.
I had sudoku solver implemented by the end of the lecture. Linked list, hash map, sets, social graphs, i got all of these implemented later, it wasn't a problem anymore. I later got an A for my diploma.
Thank you @dementiy, you were the reason for my career to blast off.7 -
Did you read about the new Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act laws of the European Union, that will go in effect in 2022? Pretty neat stuff, more transparency, user rights and a tool against internet monopolies.
"Very big online plattforms" must submit reports on freedom of speech, abuse of human rights, manipulation of public opinion.
EU assigned scientists will gain access to trade secrets like google search or Amazon recommendation algorithm to analyze potential threats.
The EU can fine serial offenders 10 % of their yearly income. And break up companies that stiffle competition.
Internet companies like Facebook will not be permitted to share user data between their products like Instagram and WhatsApp.
There will be a unified ruleset on online advertisement. Each add must have the option to find out why this add is shown to the user.
Unlike the GDRP data protection rule the two acts will be valid at the Union level. So that there won't be any exceptions from single member states.
Let's hope this leads to a better Internet and not things like cookie pop ups 😄

Just read that EU may planning regulating Algorithms...
What the fuck? WHAT THE FUCK?
They want that programmers make their Algorithms public accessible for transparency and say what algorithms are allowed to do, because people are scared of them?!
MY BRAIN HURTS AFTER THAT FUCKING GENERAL DATA PROTECTION BULLSHIT THEY WANT TO REGULATE HOW OUR PROGRAMS SHOULD WORK?!

Tip for devs (esp front end):
Sublime text (and few other inferior editors) has a plugin called "transparency" that allows your editor to be transparent.
Windows 10 powershell consoles can be made transparent.
1) Open browser
2) Open command prompt over it with 75% transparency
3) Open editor over both with 50% transparency.
4) Set editor to fullscreen, no-distraction mode to center the text (Shift+F11 in sublime)
Enjoy coding while constantly viewing the code, the browser and monitoring the cmd prompt at the same time, without having to click Alt+Tab a zillion times.17 -
That moment when you get an image from a designer and it is ok to use in the app first try. 🧐
Correct size, format, transparency, spacing, colors and everything.
I thought that day would never come.4 -
my story so far
Hey guys. i just wantes to share my story becoming something i think is like a dev.
I was always interested in solving problems. my grandfather has a company with a bit over a 100 employees. one day i decided to start working there. he needed someone to build up the erp system (mostly maintenance). about a month after i started he decided to get a new erp system because the one he had would not fill his needs. not knowing how big this got i told him that i want to build it up. from getting the orders over production with machines to billing.
he agreed. after a short time we knew that even this new system does not fullfill our needs. but it was so damn expensive. i told my grandfather: trust me, i am handling this. no further costs. and i started to learn programming. i learned night and day (visual basics.net, sql, c#). since then i wrote about 8 additional modules for the system in coorperation with the users. today, 3 years later we are far ahead our market in terms of transparency and information flow. i worked very hard for this and it is a great feeling to see that the things i do help my colleagues and are used.
i never learned this stuff in school and i know that i cannot tell that i am a professional programmer.
but when someone asks me i tell them i am a programmer because my solutions work and i think i deserve to call me that.
thanks for reading :)4 -
Apple you drove of delusional suckers! When will your retarded fashion devices finally support WEBP?!
A gallery page with images, and thanks to WEBP, it's 408 kB. Because Google made WEBP and handed out a well documented CLI FOSS compression tool that even can convert the source PNGs to lossy WEBP with bloody transparency. Well done, Google!
Except that Apple's shitty management can't take it that Google actually made something nice, so no WEBP. Instead, JPEG-2000 that enjoys nearly no fucking tool support. The free tools that even can deal with that mostly don't support transparency, and the encoder sucks donkeys so that JPEG still fucks JPEG-2000 big time.
So it's JPEG with matching background for iOS. Fine, but since JPEG's blocky artifacts are much more visible, the compression can't be that high, and it's 769 kB. That's 88% more image data for Shittari than for non-retarded browsers and even Edge! EDGE!!
Oh and if the user changes light/dark system mode according to surrounding light conditions, guess what happens? Yep, since JPEG doesn't support transparency, now it's different JPEGs with dark background via the media query in the "picture" element, and it's another 754 kB download. Bloody 1523 kB instead of 408 kB, that's a factor of 3.7!
Fuck your ass Crapple, with an electric eel!19 -
Guys, can we just not shorten links when pasting them here e.g. using bitly?
No idea what’s behind it.
I’m paranoid enough to copy paste every link before using it to see if the shown link was the actual link or just a cover. But with bitly I have to go to that page without knowing it’s target before I get there..
Hope most of you agree with me.6 -
I would like to take a moment and recognize LiLi as the possibly most outlandish design for any software ever without looking horribly ugly. I mean just fucking look at it, it heavily relies on transparency, it uses traffic lights, it uses weird glowing bars, you cannot resize it, you cannot minimize it, it has this random mash of colors in the logo, it heavily relies on gradients, the border edges are very rounded and aliased, you have no idea where the boundaries of the fucking thing is.
Overall, its fucking great guys. I have no idea where the inspiration came from, but possibly the windows aero and a mishmash of other things?21 -
So Microsoft removed the transparency Aero Glass effect going from Windows 7 to 10, to make 10 more "modern", even though 7 was pretty as fuck with that transparency.
Now they're bringing it back with their wanky "acrylic" blur?
Make up your mind Microsoft6 -
When designers use screen to give images transparency and set black text to 80% opacity instead of making it gray 🙂🔫
-
Not exactly dev stuff, but LaTeX low-key makes me nervous.
In writing my thesis it seems that through some keyboard-fuckery I managed to slip in some weird unicode bullshit character somewhere, so that it doesn't compile. Alright, I just do \DeclareUnicodeCharacter{0301}{ASDF} so that it gets replaced by ASDF. Searching for ASDF in the output pdf file does not yield results, so I can't even find the location of the fuckery in the text. It seems that unicode character is somewhere in my .bib-file and I guess my citation style doesn't even render the part of the data that character is in after all. So the above hack works, but still there is some weird-ass character in my bibliography file that I can't find.
On another note: I get that modularity is cool and all, but who thought that it is a good idea to give people zero transparency over what macro stems from which included package? No namespaces etc. I end up including a whole lot of packages that are needed for exactly one macro. That bloats up the file and you have no way to trace back which macro came from which of the quazillion included packages.
...then again maybe I'm just a lazy piece of shit whose google searches end before success and all of the above has some easy fix.9 -
my mum just sent me a picture of her and my long time no see cousin from US over WhatsApp. Short time after that, Facebook sent me a friend proposal of a girl from US I don't know - obviously it was my cousins girlfriend because she had a profile picture with him. My cousin doesn't have Facebook.
WTF?!
so what Facebook did must have been some face analysis of the picture my mum sent me over WhatsApp and compared my cousins face with profile pictures from friends of my friends to send me the proposal I got.
this is so fucking scary! I immediately thought of @linuxxx security blog and how my usage of such software affects the privacy of others besides me being transparent as fuck.
Definitely have to rethink my software choices and app/online behaviour!11 -
Yesterday, I and my team built a good hospital management system for Trauma centers containing two apps and two websites. So that the system should contain transparency. But unfortunately, we didn't made a place in top 3 but it was a great experience to build this project with my team.3
-
Why would someone in their right mind change a piece of code that was working fine (and it wasn't a complete mumbo jumbo in styling, logic, transparency, was in line with how the project was coded etc..) to use dapper just to call a stored procedure?! Dafaq is wrong with people!?
Or is it just me & I'm overreactig again?!
I hate when people add more stuff to projects that are already overbloated with fw/techologies to do something so trivial.. like adding 6827646 js fw so you can use one function in each (or are simply still there because they didn't know how to use it and left it in project) which could easily be achieved with our own fw we use...wtf?! O.o
// me cringing, cussing etc..4 -
The whole company [cult]ure bullshit has really gotten out of hand. When management sets new deadlines that only put stress on the devs then decide to have some cringe AF company bonding soirée in the middle of the work day who benefits from this? The rebranded HR platoon thinks all employees want to participate in basically mandatory chum-it-up gatherings. Don’t get me wrong I love to party and enjoy myself, but I go to work to do just that. Work. And when other departments whose main responsibility is setting up events for the technical staff, they never seem to consider these work loads or what other people actually want. It might seem all fun and dandy on the surface but when you hear tales of people talking in the closed offices about so-and-so because they aren’t reflecting the cultural values, it starts to seem very fucking problematic. Like why would anyone ever say anything when you would probably just get the boot for just being too different, even though all this sits on top of some guise of, “a diverse work environment”. All in all I hope this [cult]ure shit summers down sooner than later. And I’m in a right to work state, so transparency be damned.1

my first day with Linux.
1. downloaded the Ubuntu 16. 04 LTS and made bootable.
2. install it on my system.
3. after installing wifi is not working.
4. searched on internet with my phone and connected my PC with USB thetering.
5. now installed wifi driver.
6. now my Nvidia card is not working installed its driver too.
6.finally i look at my desktop and its looking really ancient and old.
7. installed gnome desktop and switch to it.
8. now gnome is not much functional so added some extensions like dash to dock, dynamic transparency.
9. now setup java and android studio.
10. after that android studio font is looking blurry. finally stackoverflow made my life easy and i fixed it.
now after all this my system is working crazy fast.. Android studio is opening in just 5-6 seconds.
really happy.. 😍 😍7 -
Most obnoxious company process: The newly introduced promotion process at my ex-employer.
Originally they had a run-of-the-mill process. You and your boss reviewed your performance independently, then spent an hour to compare results. If you agreed to have proven yourself, your boss did some remaining paperwork (iow he did his job) and done.
Under the guise of transparency, fairness and autonomy of employees this was changed to:
You had to find three coworkers willing to review you (favorably). You collected their feedback, processed that (strengths, "opportunities for improvement", etc) and presented it to your boss for review. These were the first two steps of four in total, of which I've forgotten the other details tbh. It became pretty ridiculous with you defining "progress indicators", your boss's boss involved in another review round and what not.
The true purpose was clear: Delaying promotions as long as possible, making the employees do all the work, and being able to just say "no" at any point. I don't know how intellectually superior managers and HR viewed themselves, because literally none of my coworkers bought this as an improvement.
But, yeah, that became the new process at a company too big to fail.1 -
Eric Thomas' Top 10 Rules For Success
1- Know what you want.
If you don’t know what you want, how will you know what to say yes to in your life? Stop taking every body else’s leftovers and step up and take what you deserve!
2- Work on your gift.
We all have our own individual talents, gifts and strengths. But those natural gifts will only become truly great by refining and nourishing them. Natural ability will get you started, but commitment and determination to achieve greatness is what will get you to where you want to be.
3- No excuses.
Stop using your circumstances, finances or current position in life as an excuse to justify why you aren’t working towards your goals. You are in charge. If you aren’t where you want to be, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself honestly- WHY? Take responsibility for you life once and for all.
4- Upgrade your values.
Your values dictate your behaviours. And your behaviours create your results. If you want to a different result, you need to change your behaviour.
5- You reap what you sow.
Nothing in life is free. It is up to you to determine the course of your life. If you want success, you need to do what it takes, daily, to get there. Don’t focus so much on being successful. Focus on solving problems, helping others, and adding value to people’s lives, and success will come.
6- Education is the great equaliser.
If you are at the bottom, you need to learn. If you are at the top, you still need to learn. Never, ever, ever stop growing and educating yourself.
7- What is your WHY?
Why do you wake up in the morning and hustle? Why do you do what you do? Knowing the answer to this question is the single most important thing to know about yourself if you want to become successful. When you know WHY you are doing what you do, you won’t ever quit, even on a bad day.
8- Have boundaries.
If you want to be a huge success, you have to be strict on yourself with how you spend your energy. Distractions will come in many forms, family, friends, TV, but you have to make sure that your time is being spent wisely.
9- Speak from the heart.
Transparency is attractive. Don’t be afraid to open up to the world and let yourself be seen.
10- Succeed as bad as you want to breathe.
Everybody wants to be successful. But not everybody is willing to do the work that it takes to become successful. When you are willing to get so uncomfortable, so out of your depth, so blind that you have no other choice but to be successful, THEN you will become successful. The only question you need to ask yourself is this. Am I willing?

Fuck you AMD for being too lazy to implement VK_EXT_fragment_shader_interlock even though your hardware supports it [1]
It's literally *the* best way to implement any sort of order independent transparency ( https://web.archive.org/web/... )
But noo, not enough people are using it so too bad. Now you just have to render transparent objects all fucked up and bad looking on AMD hardware because "we don't feel like it"

"We don't talk about _____, but we're committed to transparency." -
So we called out our project manager and tech leader, who sent out an email last Friday to our bosses and stakeholders a project schedule - which we never knew about until we saw it in our inboxes - that showed we had already completed development and would go on to UAT testing by next week.
Except if you look at our agile board we have 3 weeks of dev tasks left and a couple more for testing and QA. Then our dev environment is shit because the deployment steps in TeamCity were not properly done by Dev Ops. And we still don't have a UAT environment created, much less tested out. And the project manager is about to go on a one-month vacation. Great!
So we replied back with all the aforementioned information (less the swearing and name-calling) and sent it out to the same recipients, including our bosses and stakeholders.
That was such a fun Friday afternoon. -
One of biggest epiphanies came through this fundamental critique in SICP of the assignment operator. Through years of imperative programming it seems so innocent, doesn't it? But that you lose referential transparency, run into the alias problem and fundamental difficulty to determine object equality (or of their instances) - that was kind of eye opening considering all the pain I had already experienced with state in concurrency.
(It led me so far to think it's an ontological issue, that even in the discrete computing universe we have not come so much further than Zenon's paradoxa on change.)6 -
Why do product managers think their roadmaps/decisions are completely unrelated to our technical decisions? Information/transparency are key themes in the architecture process. In order to accept the risks, you must first understand them.
-
Hey, here's an idea. Ethical cryptocurrency mining Adblock.
We've been talking a lot about mining as a revenue source and its ethics here, so that gave me an idea.
I've seen a lot of talk about blocking or boycotting mining websites.
Adblock has the "ethical ads" thing to allow reasonable ads to be displayed.
What if we made the mining equivalent of that: an extension that the user allows to mine with x resources, that prevents websites from doing their own mining, but which redistributes its mining results.
The website could just add a bit of script to tell the extension who they are, and while the page is on the foreground or streaming content, the extension would mine on their behalf.
This could also allow more transparency for the user: "your computer has generated x money for website y".
Wouldn't that be a nice middle ground? Does anyone know of a project like that?7 -
Sooooo our department boss (the CTO) just announced his resignation, handing over his responsibilities to the lapdog of the CEO (who is very fickle on process micromanagement). Seeing as our offshore team was the CTO's idea, we're kinda expecting retrenchment to hit us in a few months once said lapdog starts throwing out our (soon-to-be-former) CTO's initiatives and projects for her own...
Quite frankly, I wish we'd get redundated now instead of later. I'm starting to hate my job (an increase from before, when I simply began to dislike it) because of my team lead's incompetence (she can't even attend a meeting without hijacking it for some other unrelated topic/issue) and lack of transparency (she never shares everything, keeps a lot of critical knowledge to herself). You can smell her lack of trust from miles away.
Anyways, yeah, I'd like to get retrenched/redundated please. I could use the money, honestly. -
To have a professional job that lets you work remotely from the comfort of your home in your own office; which pays you well enough but doesn't pressurize you into unachievable deadlines. One that gives you ample time to relax and do some part-time projects for yourself. One that lets you spend time and contribute to the communities you're part of and help you grow both professionally and within the community.
Oh, and best of all, work in the open - open source, open culture and transparency. -
Why the industry jumped on photoshop as a web design and layout tool is beyond me. It's like trying to stir coffee with your thumb. I'm a descent photoshop user but have always used inDesign in web mode. Far quicker for chucking around layouts and options (as page). It also exports as rgb png's either full pages or selections with or without transparency (at any resolution). Which are perfect for then optimising in Photoshop (Pixelmator these days) or any other less costly image editor. I hand code my sites then in Coda, love it.3

Managing a small team - poorly.
I was in charge of testing a legacy calculations engine together with two scientists, for whom I set up a python and interop environment so they could test the engine easily.
The two were very excited at the thought of validating the calculations and in fact found many bugs.
I was very supportive, told them to fix the bugs and gave them a pet on the back.
All three of us were happy the legacy engine is shaping up, that's until my boss heard of it, and boy did he grill me hard for it.
Turns out our efforts were highly unappreciated by the client, whose only request was that we test the engine and report the bugs. Not to fix them. My goodwill cost the company a lot of money, since the client paid by the hour, and was now due a refund. Crap.
It took me a year to finally understood the moral of the story. Which is to always respect the client's wishes and convey maximum transparency to him. -
That’s IT!!! I’m throwing in the towel, I’m sick of IDEs crashing and bloating up Code, zero transparency. And tired of shitty incircuit debuggers breaking.
Going old school again, give me a text editor, terminal, a scope and a com line, I’ll be fine.
Fuck the text editor just give me a terminal, OSC scope and com line.3 -
Was a tad depressed yesterday and couldn't get any serious work done, so I start doing random chores to distract myself. Fixed my urxvt extension to correctly toggle fullscreen on and off, and then I remember that the reason I have a black desktop background is I couldn't stretch the terminal to cover the whole screen, so it looked weird.
Well, not a problem anymore, so let's have something more colorful. I have this image of the eastern veil nebula laying around, for no real reason other than I thought it looked pretty. Used to be my desktop background. Let's make it so once more, enable terminal transparency, turn opacity down to 82%; now I have something other than code and the void to look at.
But curious as to what this nebula is, I g*^gle it out. I don't believe in astromambo, but I do find it funny that it's in Cygnus, because that's a swan, and the mascot for my projects is a swan too -- not because of the constellation, but because I suck at drawing.
See, my mom is a sabuner, I mean soaper. She makes olive oil soap. And we had an old box of Nablus soap in the house, which we kept because it's pretty, and the front of this box had a picture of an ostrich, drawn in bright red. I tried to base my logo on it but it ended up looking more like a swan than an ostrich; I accepted my failure and decided then and there that this would be the mascot.
It's a multitude of little relationships between things I never really thought I could relate to one another. This is utterly random shit and it cheers me up.
Anyhoo moral of the story is nebulae are fucking cool. -
So i was commenting on a rant by some user where we had this conversation about IDEs and editors...
Point: Intellij has an option to set a background to the whole ide which gives coding a unique experience instead of the pale dull solid color background.
Go to Settings > Appearance > Background image is in the main appearance tab click and set the image, position, transparency ... And voila u have a background image on your editor.
Alternative way just go to settings and search for background image12 -
Twitter. From a genuinely open and global platform which pretty much single-handedly created a new market segment, to dogmatic SJW-infected thought police with no transparency or objectivity in how they operate. Gab is the closest we have come to a viable alternative at scale, but between industry-wide bullying to shut them down and their own short sighted inability to handle their own growth, Twitter still has an outright monopoly on their segment and no shame about abusing that position.

Interview on Monday. Buzzing! The company is pretty cool, they have a startup buzz but part of a wider umbrella of businesses so don't suffer from the financial uncertainty that destroyed my last company (that and my old boss was pretty clueless about everything except sales). They also give time for personal projects, allow remote working, bonuses if the company does well and provide its employees transparency to its finances.
In short, I'm not going to be a cog in a big corporate wheel. If I get this.
Well they liked the code I produced for their programming test, so good start.
Meta: categorised this as rant because it's tech related, but obviously it's not a rant, what's the protocol? Random?2 -

It seems like very version of Ubuntu I use at work has jank. Ubuntu 18.04 would have file managers that just die. After locking/unlocking the screen it would move windows between monitors. One window would seemingly cause other windows to have discoloration and I would see phantom objects text overlaid with what looks like transparency. This was all Gnome. Lots of little quirks that I just got used to.
Now I am running 22.04 and while a lot of jank went away I am getting new jank. Every once in a while if I move a window or bring a window up after hiding the window. The window will oversize across the screen like I zoomed in. Noticing this with Firefox. It goes back to normal size real quick. But it is kind of wild. Jank that stayed is my external monitor I have attached through hdmi takes its sweet time to reactivate after being asleep. This might actually be a weird hardware issue. This is also Gnome.
I just find it wild that this jank is there and we are like: "Oh well. At least it ain't MS Windows jank..."5 -
When you receive a psd file with a million layers, when all you really need from it is the colour values and what font/size they've used and some measurements. You'll just do it all properly with CSS. Better off with a flat png or 2 with transparency and some original vectors.

I wish I could get our technical lead fired for incompetence. No transparency about deadlines (it's always "Oh and we need it today"), always overpromises to business ("I told them you can deliver this in two days" - we estimated a week's worth of work), and she never documents anything except through email (she never uses Jira, which we use for our task logging - we end up creating the tickets ourselves, which she never reads or updates either when there are blockers she needs to address).
Dozens of retrospectives later trying to find a solution to her poor organizational skills have failed to produce anything remotely close to an answer. She just stubbornly refuses to change or improve. I'm at my wits' end just dealing with this on a daily basis to the point I can't wait to clock out and go home.
It's a Friday tomorrow. I intend to slack off and just put in a couple hours of work because fuck her and fuck this company and its inability to fix itself.1 -
Devs are divided on gitlab blunder, some appreciate their honesty and transparency while other are either cursing them or grateful that they didn't use it. But think like this :
You own a MacBook and you love it like your baby, if someone drops it, there is good probability it won't break but it will sure give you a fucking heart attack. You won't ever let that person touch your MacBook.
Gitlab just did that. They scared the hell out of the developers.
I hope everyone learns from this and it doesn't happen to anyone in future.4 -

Case and point: Password Managers. Nearly all of them work only with an account on a given service, have the passwords stored on their servers and so on and so forth. There is 0 transparency and for that matter 0 security. I found my choice, though it infuriates me terribly.
Another thing are budget managers. The switch for YNAB from local to on servers really annoys me. They should have no business in storing my very private data on their server. I don't understand people using it either.1 -
when you work in a small team and there's no transparency.
TL asked for help and I gave the solution that worked for my env, and then TL just went silent for days.
is it so hard to feedback whether is it working or not? -
when the designer doesn't know that opacity style affects the whole element and everything within it... why don't you just give me the exact color and color scheme?

Just wanted to add my two cents about the GDPR: while i sympathize with those that need to make their company comply (it can be really tough and complicated to both convince the guys upstairs and implementing everything) i have to say that as a simple end-user it really is an amazing acheivement in transparency and honesty :D its amazing to able to see what services really collect about you, and to have a clear way to opr out of things if need be :) the document seems very well researched from what little i read, and i think the gdpr it sends a very positive message about committing to transparency and protection of users rights to othe countrirs that are very known for very lax regulation *cough* Us *cough*.
Im interested in seeing how this whole thing pans out, best of luck to everyone out there dealing with this!1 -
I wonder if there is any technical issues that prohibit the creation of open source websites.
By "web sites" I do not consider CMS like Drupal or word press, but rather entire end web site sources.
In fact anything (frontend, backend) except database content that contain user data and credentials.
Not for reusability purposes like CMSs, but simply for transparency and community development purposes, like almost any open source end application.
I agree that a web server is much more exposed than a classic desktop app, as it has lots of targetable private data and internet public access. But for some non-critical purpose this seems to be affordable in exchange of better code review, allowing a community to help improve a tool it uses, and better (not perfect though) transparency (which is an increasingly relevant question nowadays, mainly towards personal data usage).6 -

I've finally been so agitated at G+ I need somewhere to just vent.
So for context. What I'm talking about is Google+, or more specifically, the Android app. The website is bad in its own way, but that's not here nor there. No opinions on the iOS version, as I simply REFUSE to touch iOS.
So anyways. The platform itself honestly is not bad. With competent developers behind it, and them actually listening to their dwindling fucking userbase, they could easily turn it into something successful, but the issue is that they just aren't
You see, it's almost like they change dev staff every 6 or so months. Why do I believe this? Because the GUI changes about that fucking often. They also have a history of forcing updates, but allowing you to use an older version, just horrifically slapping on a new and unwelcome skin. This isn't an isolated practice by any means, but it's by far the most prevalent here.
So, now a list of some of the issues the current version has:
-After about a week, the app becomes unstably slow, to the point of it taking about a minute to refresh your home feed, or an individual page.
-Searching is never good, always being slow and rarely giving you who you asked for.
-Transparency is non fucking existent. There isn't a development roadmap to speak of, and when something happens we get it second hand from staff in a "G+ help" community.
There is a solution for the first one, going and clearing the data/cache, but really, the end user shouldn't have to regularly do that. Not to mention the storage space Google apps IN GENERAL fucking take up. Why does Google Play Services regularly use 250MB? (For most people, this really isn't much. But when you only get to fucking use 4 GB of internal storage it's a giant fuck you.)
Bah, back to the topic at hand.
There isn't a good solution to searching, or for transparency at the moment.
The spam filter is awful as well. REGULARLY letting obvious spam pass, regularly blocking and filtering genuine users. It's real annoying that the Android app itself doesn't have support for seeing these flags outside of rooting through the settings a bit, but still. The web and iOS versions have this already.
Oh, it also completely lacks a dark mode like most Google apps for some fuckin reason.
That concludes my random 1:30 AM rant about something I have no ability to change, except hope in vain that someone who has the ability to change this forwards this to the developers of G+.
I need a better sleep schedule.3 -
Maybe more specifically/realistically… i need a dev with data science experience that is also as optimistically psychotic as I am… I got wicked ambition. (Just make sure you can apply clear hermeneutic transparency to your math confined programmer brain)5
-
Just some figma improvements from the perspective of a new customer:
* Copy/paste is broken. If I want to make a change, I have to create a whole new
component. They recommend cmd+c/v for copypaste but as far as I can see it does nothing
* Needs to be an explicit component drawer button instead of hiding it under assets. Through me for a loop for a couple minutes.
* Empty textboxes shouldn't vanish because you happened to click in the wrong location
while setting your properties.
* Text should start big enough to actually see.
* "send to back/front", "hide item", "change transparency' all need to be prototype actions and more, give us access to object properties both by parent/sibling/child, and by
object id
* create a new frame based on a specified size is non-obvious and if you're creating
a lot of frames, what with copypaste being non-intuitive, it can become laborious.
This is especially so when you're copying frames in order to make minor changes and observe the differences side by side, instead of potentially destructive edits.
* I see no obvious way to manage transitions/animations between frames.
* The difference between frames and groups isn't sufficiently explained. The words
frame, groups, and layers all appear to new users to be used interchangeably, even
if they are distinct things.2 -
One thing I love about agile and scum is that it easily points out who or what isn't carrying it's weight. The visibility and transparency is awesome, but of course this only applies to teams that implement it correctly!

However, the feeling of despair and loss was transformed into pure happiness when I received the incredible news from REVENANT CYBER HACKER that my lost Bitcoin wallet, holding 132,000 bitcoins, had been successfully recovered. This is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of professional recovery services in restoring lost Bitcoin wallets. Ah, the sweet sound of good news. There I was, minding my own business on an average Tuesday morning, when I got a notification that would make any bitcoin enthusiast jump for joy. It was a message from none other than REVENANT CYBER HACKER, informing me that my long-lost bitcoin wallet had been found. And not just any bitcoin wallet, mind you, but one containing a whopping 132,000 units of the beloved cryptocurrency. Now, for those living under a rock or perhaps too preoccupied with the latest cat videos, let me give you a crash course in Bitcoin 101. Bitcoin is a digital currency that has taken the world by storm, captivating the minds of tech-savvy investors and casual enthusiasts alike. It operates on a decentralized network, meaning it doesn't answer to any central authority like a bank. Instead, it relies on blockchain technology, which adds a layer of security and transparency to every transaction. To own bitcoin, you need a wallet – a digital container where your precious coins reside. Think of it as a virtual piggy bank, except you don't need a hammer to break it open. Your wallet comes with a unique address, like a digital fingerprint, that allows you to send and receive bitcoin. Losing access to this wallet is as heart-wrenching as misplacing your favorite pair of socks. Trust me, it's not a pleasant feeling. My encounter with the disappearance of my Bitcoin wallet taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of implementing proper security measures. It's not enough to rely on luck or hope that your digital assets will remain safe. Taking proactive steps to protect your investments is crucial in the wild world of cryptocurrencies. From using strong and unique passwords to enabling two-factor authentication, every layer of security adds another brick to the fortress that safeguards your digital wealth. Trust me, you don't want to learn this lesson the hard way. It has changed my life to be able to retrieve my misplaced Bitcoin wallet thanks to REVENANT CYBER HACKER amazing services. It made me realize the worth of tenacity.

Honest question - when a company offers has an open source software product (in the name of transparency and whatnot), but offers it as a binary release as well for non-developers, what guarantee do you have that the release was *really* compiled from the source they provide?

They asked me a series of technical questions about my wallet and recovery attempts. For the first time in months, I felt like I was talking to someone who understood what I was going through. Digital Hack Recovery’s team was incredibly patient. They didn’t promise me a quick fix, but rather, they explained the process step-by-step. I appreciated their transparency. Over the course of the next few days, I worked closely with their experts, who guided me through the process of verifying my identity and making sure I hadn’t overlooked any potential recovery methods. Slowly but surely, they started to narrow down what had gone wrong with my previous attempts and developed a custom recovery plan based on my specific case. The recovery process was a bit of a rollercoaster. There were moments of doubt—when things didn’t work as expected, or when the progress seemed slow—but the team at Digital Hack Recovery was there every step of the way, reassuring me and providing updates. And then, one afternoon, it happened. They sent me an email with a subject line I’ll never forget: "Your ETH is Recoverable." My heart raced as I opened it. They had successfully recovered my ETH. The process was painstaking, but their expertise and persistence had made it happen. What impressed me most was their transparency and professional approach. After months of fruitless efforts with other firms, Digital Hack Recovery successfully recovered my lost ETH. They restored my faith in recovery services, and I am forever grateful for their expertise. RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY: PIONEERING BITCOIN RESTORATION SOLUTIONS
I was horrified when I lost my 45,000 ETH for the first time. It accounted for a sizeable amount of my savings, which I had built up over years of cautious investing and faith in the cryptocurrency industry. It was a sophisticated hack, not a bad trade or market meltdown, that caused the loss. I felt completely powerless after the money was taken directly out of my wallet. I initially turned to multiple recovery services in the hope of recovering my stolen assets. However, after months of dealing with fraudulent services and ineffective solutions, I was on the verge of writing off my entire investment. Many services seemed like nothing more than scams, preying on vulnerable individuals like myself. They promised miracles but left me with empty assurances and no results. I was about to give up when a buddy suggested Rapid Digital Recovery, a brand I had never heard of. I was first dubious because I had previously been burned and didn't want to put my trust in another provider. However, Rapid Digital Recovery felt different in some way. They took a professional approach, spoke openly, and sincerely wanted to provide a workable answer. From the very first consultation, I was impressed by their level of expertise. They took the time to explain how they worked, the tools they used to trace stolen funds, and the process they followed to attempt to recover assets. They didn’t promise a quick fix but reassured me that they had successfully assisted others in similar situations. They walked me through each step of the process and kept me updated at every stage. Over the next several weeks, I saw the results of their hard work. Rapid Digital Recovery employed advanced techniques to track the stolen ETH across various blockchain networks and worked tirelessly with law enforcement and crypto exchanges to trace its movements. Their team showed a level of dedication and professionalism that I hadn’t seen from any other recovery service. I’m happy to say that, after months of intense work, Rapid Digital Recovery was able to recover the majority of my stolen ETH—around 42,000 ETH, which was an incredible relief. While not every cent was returned, the recovery rate far exceeded my expectations, and I felt like I had regained control over my financial future. What stood out the most about my experience with Rapid Digital Recovery was their transparency and integrity throughout the process. Unlike many other services, they never made unrealistic promises or pressured me into paying exorbitant fees upfront. They were clear about what was achievable and kept me informed every step of the way. If you find yourself in a similar situation—dealing with the devastating loss of crypto assets due to theft or fraud—I highly recommend Rapid Digital Recovery. Their expertise, dedication, and ethical approach to recovery make them stand out in an industry plagued with unreliable services. I can confidently say that without them, I would have likely lost my entire investment. Contact for more info: ....... Web site Info: https: // ra pi ddigit alrecove ry .o rg .......
